We selected ITALIAN MASTERS DO IT BETTER as the title of the exhibition on the great contemporary Italian artists that founded and influenced important internationally celebrated art movements in the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, until the year 2000 and onwards, because we wish to point out the excellent unique creativity of these masters, officially introducing their artworks in the United States during this millennium. The American public is familiar to the excellence of Italian creativity in contemporary design, fashion, food, automotive industry, music, literature, as well as in Italian Classic Art masters like Leonardo, Michelangelo or Rafael, but only the in deep contemporary art connoisseurs know that Alberto Biasi was widely celebrated at the Venice Biennial and at New York MoMA around the middle of the last century as one of the founders of the international kinetic movement. ITALIAN MASTERS DO IT BETTER will present these masters to the general public at art galleries, art fairs, museums, private and public institutions, as well as through media campaigns and publications. This unique exhibition will open at VALLI ART Gallery simultaneously with our Booth at the prestigious CONTEXT Art Fair, both in Wynwood, FL.

The Post-War era marks a period in Italian Arts and Design, when “the Italian reinvented the way of doing things.” The exhibition at Valli Art Gallery presents master artists that, from the end of the 40’s and the first half of the 60’s, worked on the “upgrade” of the concept of the canvas, not any more conceived as a space to underline a representation in favor of a more physical approach, direct and conceptual, which will transform the overall canvas and its support in an artistic object self-expressive that will open a subjective dialogue with the public. Consequently, artworks would reconnect to the world and to true life. From the first Manifesto of Spatialism in 1946, Lucio Fontana and Bruno Munari envisioned a new art that should be characterized by a physical study of matter, color and sound in movement, the rhythm resulting from a new work with the pictorial palimpsest, aimed to overcome the two-dimensional limitation of the canvas by creating a space, physical and conceptual at the same time. Bruno Munari, a most important Italian Leonardesque figure of the 20th century, dominated the 50’s-60’s Milanese scene in the years of the economic boom, in which was born the figure of the artist visual-operator that becomes business consultant while contributing to the Italian post-war industrial revival. Very young, Munari participated with the Futurism, from which separates with a sense of lightness and humor, inventing the Aerial Machine, 1930, the first ‘mobile’ in art history, and the Useless Machines, 1933. In 1948, he founded MAC, the Concrete Art

Movement, with Gillo Dorfles, Gianni Monnet and Atanasio Soldati. The movement was a worldwide catalyst of Italian abstract instances proposing a synthesis of the arts, able to combine traditional painting with new communication tools, to show to industrialists and artists-artists the possible convergence between art and technique. In 1947, Munari created Concave-convex, one of the first installations in art history. Lucio Fontana presented Black environment, 1949, at Galleria Naviglio in Milan.

Between December 1959 and July 1960, Enrico Castellani, Extended and bent inwards surfaces, and Piero Manzoni, Achrome, founded Galleria Azimut in Milan, followed by the journal Azimuth in collaboration with Agostino Bonalumi, Cushioned-canvases. Azimut and Azimuth had an echo and domino effect almost unimaginable, with a disruptive experimentation and a desecration of the tools of making art, offering to the spectator the new role of completing the work by an artist that conceptually, symbolically and physically, violated the canvas. In those same years, Paolo Scheggi reached similar artistic outcomes exhibiting his Intersurfaces in Florence. In 1965, Fontana involved Turi Simeti in the exhibit Zero Avantgarde at his Milanese studio, proving that the Sicilian artist wasn’t indifferent to the demands of the Spatialism. The exhibit makes a synthesis of two historical Italian movements with Alberto Biasi telling about Optical Art and with Castellani, Bonalumi and Scheggi about Spatialism. The show, following Azimut’s assumptions, investigates these artists, including their natural heirs, Giuseppe Amadio and Cesare Berlingeri, who dared to violate the canvas to rewrite history, building on it something unexpected and revolutionary based on the real use of space, the research on time and the analysis of the structures’ rhythm. A section of the show will present Mimmo Rotella and Giosetta Fioroni that in the same years explored at Rome POP expression and realistic Nouveaux. Including Michelangelo Pistoletto, the exhibition showcases masters and their followers that made Italian painting a center of autonomous visual perceptions, where viewers also became the protagonists of the canvas interpretation.

MANO Fine Art proudly presents Deep As A River
on view through November 28, 2016.

Featuring work by: Donald McKnight, Robert McKnight, MANO. Ali Miranda, Adriano Nicot, and Purvis Young.

Soulful and provoking the exhibit “Deep As A River” presents a collection of strong and at times uneven, but always intriguing works that collectively are an exultation of the human spirit. Of a life properly lived knowing as poet Jim Harrison said “You touch things lightly or deeply; but you move along because life herself moves, and you can’t stop it; so you go with the “being-ness” of life…”.

“Deep As A River” revolves around the work of Purvis Young, perhaps one of the most important outsider artist of recent times. Young is best known for chronicling life in Miami’s inner city; his work remains as relevant today as it was when he started documenting the hustle and bustle of Overtown. The exhibit than extends to include a poignant collection of photography by Ali Miranda, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”; Adriano Nicot’s blue series which while dark is not without humor; masterful figurative drawings by Donald Mcknight; powerful examples of assemblage as sculpture by Robert McKnight. Fittingly the exhibit ends with stunning mix media works by MANO that speak to our time, “Hanging On” a nod to the United States history of immigration, and “Fools on the Hill” that may be viewed as veiled political commentary.

Special thanks to Gallery Moderne for collaborating with us to exhibit works by Purvis Young.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

McFadden, Mario Pfeifer and Roberto Visani, and films by Bhawin Suchak & Ira McKinley and Stanley Nelson. “SAY IT LOUD!” is inspired by the James Brown song of the same name that addresses racial discrimination and calls for black empowerment. The call in this context is a rallying cry for all to mobilize against injustice and discrimination, as well as embrace black culture pride in the United States and African Diaspora. The artists explore a range of experiences that not only address the re-imagination and representation of blackness, but also examine the fear, trauma, and grief transpiring in black communities.

Miami, FL – October 25, 2016 – For the second consecutive year, Miami Parking Authority and Beefree Media are coming together for the award-winning Wynwood’s Park-Your-Art contest. Eight artists will be chosen to publicly paint a Pay-and-Display machine and seemingly unite the Wynwood community through this event.

Much like the 2015 contest, we are seeking emerging and established artists to submit an original artwork proposal that falls under the theme, “Wynwood United.” The theme will embody community members and businesses coming together.

To further our commitment to our community, we will also include new “little artists” and install artwork submitted by Miami-Dade elementary school students in restaurants, retail stores, art galleries, etc. to promote this initiative and bring hundreds of families to Wynwood.

“One of the many social benefits of art is the way it can unite and transform individuals and communities. At Miami Parking Authority, we are proud to be part of a project that builds community and enhances the lives of the people we serve,” said Alejandra Argudin, Chief Operation Officer.

Artwork will be judged upon the following criteria: originality of content, technique and creative interpretation of theme. Winners will be designated one Pay-and-Display machine that they will paint live on Saturday, November 19th, 2016. In addition, the machines will be covered with an anti-graffiti lamination so the design will stay fresh and unharmed.

“Not all communities rally around an event, but most will rally around a cause,” said Stuart Lujan, Managing Partner at Beefree. “This amazing project allows for the Wynwood community to contribute and grow stronger together.”

The artwork will be visible through the 2016 Miami Art Basel season and will remain displayed until the following Wynwood’s Park-Your-Art contest in 2017.

Miami Parking Authority and Beefree Media encourage people from throughout the U.S. to participate, get creative and engage the community. Submissions close on Friday, November 4th, 2016.

For information on eligibility and how to enter, please visit: www.parkyourartwynwood.com.

ABOUT SUPERFINE!
Superfine! represents the continued evolution of the art world. We believe that inspired original artwork by living artists is for everyone, not just a select few. Our art fairs and programming are designed to engage, excite, and delight. The spaces that we build are a complement to the creativity they showcase, and channel the same dynamic energy of the artists and artrepreneurs that make up our lifeblood. Our values are rooted in providing a fair and challenging counter to the typical white box space–one wherein exhibitors thrive and collectors gain access to the freshest original artwork on the planet. We encourage and welcome new collectors, and provide a refreshing alternative for established ones. We like to think that Superfine! puts the “fair” back in art fair by displaying only the strongest artwork by the most passionate living artists while also offering exhibition space as affordably as possible. In this way, we are able to cultivate a deliciously vibrant space where both collectors and exhibitors end up on the right side of the deal.

In celebration of YoungArts’ 35th anniversary, the “Transformations” series comprises five short films created by groups of alumni in various disciplines, and will culminate in a world premiere for the public on the YoungArts campus. The theme draws parallels between the organization’s growth and evolution since its founding in 1981, and the critical formative period YoungArts Winners experience from adolescence to adulthood. The program provides selected alumni an opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas and create new work that reveals unique interdisciplinary connections—such as between dance and writing; voice and cinematic arts; jazz and photography; music and design; and visual art and theater.

Young Artist Initiative Presents Design and its Dimensions 10/28/16

Young Artist Initiative Presents Design and its Dimensions

The Moore Building
4040 NE 2nd Ave,
Miami, Florida 33137
Eventbrite
Cost: Free with RSVP

Young Artist Initiative (YAI), Miami’s newest artist driven concept presents Design and its Dimensions, a curated sensory exhibition on Friday, October 28th, 2016 at The Moore Building organized by the Young Artist Initiative in partnership with the Miami Design District.

For its next exhibition, YAI has carefully selected Design and its Dimensions as the conceptual base for live art and activations. Design has been the force of evolution since the birth of innovation and has accompanied the development of our culture over the course of history. Its precise yet flexible nature has been the power behind our greatest civilizational advancements, from the creation of industry to the mapping of cities.

The Young Artist Initiative (YAI) aims to create a dialogue by instilling Design and its Dimensions as the conceptual base of its next exhibition. All participating artists and designers are being presented with the challenge of interpreting the exhibitions central thesis: how do we design the fourth dimension?

YAI invites you to enjoy and ponder the reflections of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists at Design and its Dimensions on Friday, October 28th 2016 at the Moore Building. The event starts at 8 p.m. and goes until 3 a.m.

The Miami Design District, the brainchild of Craig Robins, is a creative neighbourhood dedicated to innovative fashion, design, art, architecture, and dining. The Moore Building, located in the heart of the Design District, is a unique exhibition space with four floors of arcades spaces totaling more than 21,000-square-feet. On permanent display in the atrium is the site-specific installation “Elastika”, created by Zaha Hadid.

Guests must be 21+. Tickets are non-refundable.

Spotify is working with a different visual artist in each city to create a custom piece of music-inspired art that reflects the issue being discussed that week on Clarify, an original audio and video series that will explore the intersection of key issues and will feature today’s hottest musicians including Diplo, Prophets of Rage, Vic Mensa, Talib Kweli and more.

On Tuesday, October 18th, they’ll be hosting multimedia artist Ivan Depeña at 11 11 for an exclusive art installation that explores climate change through art by building a series of ice sculptures that will melt throughout the installation, including as a backdrop for the open discussion and community event. PINTA Miami is gearing up for its 10th anniversary celebration, which will take place from November 30 to December 4, 2016 at MANA Wynwood, located in the heart of the Miami Arts District. This edition will be the pinnacle of ten years that have left a mark on the world of modern and contemporary art from Latin America. In order to further our mission, PINTA Miami’s curatorial committee has expanded its project to include galleries from around the globe while maintaining a conceptual dialogue across all cultures, connecting Latin America to the rest of the world.

Launched in New York in 2006, the fair is considered the most important event of its kind. The founding of PINTA Miami was a milestone event in awareness of twentieth-century Hispanic-American art. It has increased the visibility in the United States of crucial figures like Julio Le Parc, José Gurvich, Jorge Eielson, Lydia Okumura, Antonio Manuel, Waltercio Caldas, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Spanish artist Elena Asins—all of whom have been featured in its exhibitions and galleries. Emerging contemporary artists like Elias Crespin, Ivan Navarro, Alexandre Arrechea, Dario Escobar, Matias Duville, Alejandro Londono, Gonzalo Fuenmayor, José Luis Landet, Ricardo Alcaide, Emilio Chapela, and many others have also participated in the fair. Through innovative management strategies, PINTA has been instrumental to major museums’ acquiring works by Latin American artists. A few examples of such acquisitions include a piece by Abraham Palatnik purchased by MoMA for its permanent collection; a work by Elias Crespín purchased by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and a work by Fernando Bryce purchased by the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA).

“Thanks to its impressive programming, PINTA Miami 2015 was extremely well attended. Our curated sections featured not only works by a range of legendary artists, but also recreations of historical performances. The fantastic selection of participating galleries from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal built new relationships with international collectors and directors of art institutions, enabling a great many sales,” states Diego Costa Peuser, the founder and director of PINTA Miami. “There was great interest in figures like Romulo Aguerre, Reynaldo Luza, Roberto Obregon, and Elena Asins, and in artists born after the sixties like the Carla Arocha – Stéphane Schraenen duo.”

PINTA Miami 2016 will be more international and interdisciplinary. Thanks to their successful sections at last year’s edition, curators José Antonio Navarrete, Roc Laseca, and Jesus Fuenmayor will return this year to curate sections on photography, drawing, and solo projects respectively. This edition aims to continue to provide a platform for its participants and to further the fair’s mission of showcasing pioneering artists and discovering young talents.

In addition, PINTA Miami launches the Young Collectors Desk, an initiative of Guijarro de Pablo Art Consulting. The objective is to provide to the assistants -already avid collectors and enthusiasts of art – with the necessary tools to maximize the experience at the fair. The Young Collectors Desk aims to educate and give attendees the opportunity to explore the world of the arts with guided tours that focus on the construction and maintenance of a coherent and sustainable collection. The initiative is directed by Jimena Guijarro, who combines her knowledge of strategic communications with her experience and passion for the visual arts. One of her specialties is to introduce and facilitate the collecting processes to newcomers to the art world.

PINTA Miami is directed by Diego Costa Peuser, CEO and Editor in Chief of Arte al Dia Internacional magazine. He is also the founder and director of PARC – Peru Arte Contemporaneo, BAphoto (Buenos Aires Photo), and the Buenos Aires and Punta del Este editions of Gallery Nights. In this 2016 edition, PINTA Miami will also enjoy the support of the SaludArte Foundation, directed by collector Tanya Brillembourg, and EFG Bank, a Swiss bank that has had offices in Miami for over twenty years. LATAM also returns to PINTA as the sponsor of VIP lounge. On this anniversary edition, PINTA reinforces its commitment to support and promote latin american art while connecting it to the rest of the world by “crossing cultures”, thereby taking the fair to new frontiers.

Toda percepción es una interpretación: You are part of it is a retrospective look from the viewpoint of contemporary issues of art, culture, politics and economics. It seeks to reflect on the successive reconfigurations of the art map in the last few decades, on the displacements and relocations of its primary centers, from Paris to New York, from Venice to São Paulo, from Basel to Miami. It speaks of areas that have succeeded in alternating centripetal or centrifugal forces, where art has relocated its meeting points and its observation points. We also pay attention to the effects of redrawing the financial or political map, with the repercussion it has on how one makes and proceeds in art.

Swerdlow Art Group, in collaboration with Osel Art Group, is pleased to announce its Fall 2016 exhibition: Migration of the Sign, featuring the works of Sergio Payares and Maximo Caminero. This marks the gallery’s second exhibition of the artists’ works. The opening reception will take place from 6-9p.m. on Friday, October 7th, 2016.

Migration of the Sign explores the dynamics of artistic productions and migration, questioning what migrates in a painting and what defines alterity during the process. This exhibition provides an opportunity to experience the interference and the fading of the sign through the blurring, changing and transferring of codes, leading to a new approach to image making in which the fluctuation of the imaginary transcends the pictorial space. Twenty works spanning the last decade of the artists’ practices will be presented to the public for the first time.

Migration of the Sign will run through November 18th, 2016, and is open to the public.

After an incredible season on June, 2016 and the participation at The International Young Dancers Festival in Indonesia, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida prepares its new 2017 season with amazing programs showcasing the very best of international ballet.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the master composer Sergei Prokofiev, the Art Ballet Theatre of Florida, presents excerpts from the acclaimed classical ballet pieces, Stone Flower, Cinderella, Romeo & Juliet, plus the world premiere of a piece inspired by Prokofiev’s first symphony, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev, Artistic Director of the company.

Cinderella, is Prokofiev’s most descriptive, melodious and beautiful composition. This ballet piece was first premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1945 with choreography by Rostislav Zkharov. But this time south Floridians will have the privilege to experience of our talented Vladimir Issaev who promises create a short suite, alongside other great classical ballet pieces of the great Russian composer.

Stone Flower is Sergei Prokofiev’s eighth and last ballet, written between 1948 and 1953. It is based on the Russian Ural folk tale of the same name The Story of the Stone Flower by Pavel Bazhov and is also the last of the trilogy of ballets Prokofiev wrote in the Russian ballet tradition, a mixture of real-life scenes and fantastic dreams, of classical dance and folk choreography.

Arts Ballet Theatre’s production of the Stone Flower will feature choreography by Maestro Issaev. The story concerns the fate of the stone carver, Danila, who wishes to see the full power of the stone and show its beauty to the people. This classical piece shows a love story that showcases how this powerful feeling exceeds the adversities.

Issaev’s Stone Flower was commissioned by the Michiko Matsumoto Ballet in Japan, and its performance in 2011 received excellent reviews.

Also this program presents the ultimately love story of all times Romeo and Juliet, this piece composed by Prokofiev is based on the universal and remarkable play by Shakespeare. It is a romantic and dramatic tale of love between two youngsters coming from feuding families forced to hide their love and tragically ending.

Suites of the ballet music were heard in Moscow and the United States, but the full ballet premiered in the Mahen Theatre, Brno (then in Czechoslovakia, now in the Czech Republic), on December 30th 1938. The famous adagio of the balcony scene, with choreography of Lavrovsky will be an important scene presented by The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. Mary Carmen Catoya and Daniel Sarabia principal dancers will be responsible for leading the main roles.

The program will also feature the collaboration of the distinguished guest choreographer Miao Zong with a beautiful ballet number named Bolero from the French composer Maurice Ravel. Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein, the piece, which premiered in 1928, is Ravel’s most famous musical composition.

Chinese native Miao Zong, have danced with Le Jeune Ballet de France, Ballet Nacional de Caracas, Boston Ballet and Ballet de l‘Opera du Rhin in France where he is currently assistant director. In 2004 he made his choreographic debut with Le Chant de Dieu, a solo that he danced at Boston Ballet and then was invited by Mr. Peter Martins to create a new piece “Entre nous” for the School of American Ballet in New York. And now The Arts Ballet Theater of Florida is privileged to have him as a collaborator.

Peter Hosfeld: Entropia

Sept. 10 – Oct. 23, 2016
Friday, Sept. 9, 6 – 9 pm

Born in Spain and raised in Norway, Peter Hosfeld studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His subsequent career in the video-game industry has combined with influences of modernist abstraction to produce a vocabulary of expressionist/comic style mark-making that signals entropy as a dynamic force of transformation.

Entropia features paintings of “narrative abstraction” in which frenetic movement is portrayed using high- and low-culture references. Two installations utilize decay and time as active ingredients to produce uncertain outcomes. Using local ocean water as a hostile medium of corrosion in which oil paintings on steel plates are submerged, Hosfeld considers issues of impermanence, temporary measures and unpredictability. The same elemental forces are at work on everything in this world, including us.

Wynwood Art Walk has become one of the most iconic events in Miami, and SWARM, the creator of its epicenter along NW 23rd Street and 5th Avenue, is now poised to serve as an advocate for the Miami music scene by showcasing local talent. “We’re committed to bringing live music to Wynwood Art Walk, and much like our passion for all things local, we intend to give Miami musicians a platform to promote their music,” said Tony Albelo, partner of SWARM.

Wynwood Art Walk will include a main stage where several bands will be scheduled to perform starting at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, August 13, SWARM is hosting four local bands, including the sun-drenched, garage rock headliners SunGhosts and their debut album release party. The album was recorded at Cutting Cane Studios in South Florida and was produced by two-time Grammy-winning producer Joel Someillán. Although the album is set for worldwide release (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) on August 23, eager fans will get to pre-purchase it at Wynwood Art Walk, ten days before its official launch. This installment of Wynwood Art Walk will also feature live music sets by Alexander Di Leo, KIDS, and Magic City Hippies. For info on pre-ordering SunGhosts’ new album, follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sunghostsofficial.

As always, Wynwood Art Walk is free and open to the public every second Saturday of the month. It’s the best place to people watch. It’s where locals get meet local artisans eager to showcase and sell their craft. It’s the place to satisfy that craving for five-star food trucks, and now, it’s the place to get up close and personal with Miami musicians who deserve to be center stage. Miguel Rodez’s solo exhibition features colossal portraits and imaginative botanical paintings on the wild side. Among the works, there are two new large format portraits that will be making their official debut. One is of famed artist Frida Kahlo and the other depicts President Abraham Lincoln. Please join us for this evening event with artist Miguel Rodez.

The Steven & Dorothea Green Library is the main library and the largest building on campus, about two blocks North from the Frost Art Museum.

Economical parking is available within a reasonable walking distance to the Green Library. There are several parking lots and buildings on campus with public parking. The Green Library is the largest building on campus, and it is centrally located. Guests often park by the parking buildings near the Frost Art Museum and walk north through the sculpture garden toward the Library.

The exhibit will be on view through August 31, 2016.

On View July 30, 2016 – September 2016

Girls’ Club presents an exhibition of recent collages from T.J. Ahearn, inspired by and created on vintage LP vinyl record albums from the 60s and 70s, in the Annex Space. Gallery hours are by appointment only during August 2016.

The music spanning the 60s and 70s represents a dynamic shift in the cultural strata of western civilization and beyond. Rock ‘n Roll the prevailing musical genre signifying that era remains embedded in our contemporary society — to the point of banality as it is often co-opted for TV advertising and mass media.

The evocative, imaginary scenes in TJ Ahearn’s works are ignited by the spark of the music’s intent and flavor– reflections on concepts of Utopianism, sexual liberation, spirituality, ecology, war resistance and other themes that continue to be relevant today.

A limited edition series of prints from Ahearn’s unique collages, published by Girls’ Club will be available for sale in conjunction with the exhibition.

Pre-order information available soon!

During the opening reception, on Saturday, July 30th, at 7pm, South Florida-based band Pocket of Lollipops will perform inside the gallery to kick off the exhibition.

Made of wife and husband team of Maitejosune Urrechaga and Tony Kapel, Pocket of Lollipops will swirl together a mind melding indie rock frenzy leaving the listener with a dizzying, organic sound and taking the audience to another dimension, far off into the past or future.

“The duo has been instrumental in merging South Florida’s stuffy art scene with a spunkier, all-fun, no-gloom attitude. The aural results are an art-punk, danceable, no wave sound that glistens in the diabetic saccharine glory of power-pop.”

-Abel Folgar, New Times Broward Palm Beach

Editions of the band’s LP album Broken Balloon, with cover art by TJ Ahearn, will be available for sale.

Miami, Fl. Portugal Tropical is an art exhibition that brings to Miami an approach to the work of three prominent Portuguese contemporary artists, who carry out their artistic views in different expressive ways but are bounded by the exoticism and sensuality of the tropics. A selection of paintings by Pedro Calapez, landscapes by Monica Miranda and ceramic sculptures by Maria Ana Vasco Costa are the core of the exhibition curated by Alda Galsterer and Veronica de Mello in Merzbau Gallery (Wynwood, Miami) from June 9th.
Calapez’ color palette proposes an approach to the tropics with expressive and dynamic lines, from the perspective of this Lusitanian artist. Meanwhile, the photographic images of landscapes delicately embroidered by Miranda offers a reading through a visual fabric that unites tropical wild nature, with a human hand holding the knitting needle. The subtle strength of Vasco Costa ceramics, remembers us that tropics also has an urban side that lives in a symbiotic way with forests, mountains and rivers.
The confluence of these artistic proposals, bonded together with an organic line by the curators, parts by the influence that Portugal receives from the tropics since years ago: music, food, dances and traditions from Africa and America, part of this country’s memories, enriched and nourished. Portuguese contemporary artists can prove it.
For Arsen Wannissian and Glauco Avila, both founders and directors of Merzbau Gallery hosting this exhibition felt very natural, but was always a very important project to achieve. Merzbau is a space dedicated to showcase an innovative program that promotes diversity in the arts, as an intense cultural exchange in our city. The exhibition is presented in partnership with REDE, a contemporary art agency that works within the artistic community in countries such as, Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Macau, Mozambique, São Tome and Principe, bringing a new perspective in the art market. Merzbau has been positioned as an international platform for curatorship and artists all over the world.
Miami, known as a cultural melting pot, seems to be the right stage for this exhibition. “We hope our city received this proposal with enthusiasm, and take this unique opportunity to see the tropical light through the eyes of these talented Portuguese artists” Wannissian said.

Manatee Lagoon
6000 N. Flagler Drive,
West Palm Beach, Florida 33407

Cost: $15 for 90min class kids/ $30 for 2 hour adult class

Starting this summer, Manatee Lagoon is offering patrons onsite art classes twice weekly, providing class participants sweeping waterfront vistas of the Lake Worth Lagoon to help channel their creative energies. Adult classes are on Friday evenings; children’s classes are Saturday afternoons. Local artist and Manatee Lagoon “Manatee Master” Hannah Cooper, will lead the classes.

Beginning on Friday, June 10, for adults and Saturday, June 11, for children ages 6-12, guests will be invited to learn about the Lagoon and its ecosystem though artistic expression. Adults will paint a different Lake Worth Lagoon species each week, while simultaneously learning about that particular animal’s place in the overall local ecosystem. Adults will leave each class with their original canvas.

Children’s art activities will vary and include seascapes on canvas or coconuts, drawing food cycles, water colors, sculpting and crafts. Adults and children alike will learn art techniques such as mixing colors and shading while at the same time gain an understanding of the scientific wonders of the area’s animals and habitats.

On Fridays, guests experience a creative and relaxing night out, and on Saturdays, the beautiful scenery, free coffee and Wi-Fi help parents while away the time as their children have fun with art and science. Classes are $30 per two-hour session for adults; $15 for each 90-minute children’s class. The registration fee covers all supplies. Space is limited, and participants may register at Manatee Lagoon or online for Artful Learning and can access a complete monthly calendar of events at VisitManateeLagoon.com/events.

Proxy Selves: a fast-paced, prompt-driven writing workshop with Girls’ Club writer in residence Jan Becker

$20 registration

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
– Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer.
Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process.

Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Yo Miami and artist Kareem David Piper are pleased to announce the opening reception for “Metaxy and the Magic City.” Concrete Beach Brewery will be providing refreshments for the opening and closing receptions, occurring respectively on May 21st, 2016 and July 21st 2016. Music will be by Kwesi Kris. Kareem’s work reflects the contemporary human condition of existing in a transient state. His work questions the true depth of these relationships created with people and places which are encountered only in passing. They evoke a feeling of internal splitting or dislocation, and force the viewer to question how they perceive their own reality. This body of work reflects Piper’s feelings and perceptions of various social settings and transient scenes he encounters on a daily basis while living in Miami. The depicted images are sourced from photos the artist has taken while riding the Miami Dade Metrorail. The Metrorail is very close to the artist’s studio, and is itself very symbolic of the transient state that exists here in Miami. This exhibition serves as a celebration and validation of the Master of Fine Art in painting degree he will be receiving this year from MIU. His studio can be found in downtown Miami at 500 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132 and is available for visits by appointment only.

The Young Artist Initiative presents an exceptional partnership with Lou La Vie and the Miami Micro Theater. Join us on Saturday, May 7th for a new experience featuring live theater and an incredible lineup of musicians, live performances, installments, exhibitions, and more!

The cultural virus that has infected the city of Miami in the past decade has led to the rise of art-driven concepts and has drawn the attention of designers, architects, and overall creators from all corners of our globe, whose presence has helped in the development and enrichment of Miami’s cultural personality.

The Young Artist Initiative aims to celebrate and encourage this creative spirit by instilling “Renaissance” as the conceptual base of its next installation. All participating artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing the cultural rebirth occurring in the city of Miami and consider its effects and ramifications on the identity of our city. Their performances and installations will exist as reflections of their individual interpretations on the matter, expressed through each of their iconic aesthetics and methodologies.

We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflection of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists on Saturday, May 7th at Lou La Vie featuring Miami’s Micro Theater!

BEACONS: BY JOÃO ENXUTO AND ERICA LOVE

Opening April 13 at the ArtCenter/South Florida, New York-based artists João Enxuto and Erica Love’s institutionally-focused work forms the basis of their new show “Beacons.” The exhibition builds upon their continued interest in the role technology plays in mediating the power dynamics between institutions and their publics.

Running through June 19, 2016 at the ArtCenter’s Project 924 gallery, the exhibition features a 15- minute video Institute for Southern Contemporary Art (ISCA): a proposal for an institution that utilizes an algorithm to analyze the contemporary art market in order to automate a production plan to create the means for artists to work otherwise. This strategy outlines the way in which artists can successfully make inroads into the global art market. The video—with scenes shot in Atlanta and in Miami Beach—sets up the framework for the exhibition where viewers can expect to engage with the gallery as a system of objects, artworks, and sensors––relaying both the signal and noise of data monitoring.

Wood art has a long history that can be traced to ancient cultures through mythology and folklore. It would appear that man has always had an ambiguous relationship with trees and wood. Worshipped for perceived magical powers, and revered for its strength and beauty this age old element is perhaps one of the oldest mediums used for artistic expression.

Today contemporary artists continue to work with wood but with a different using materials that are local and reclaimed artists explore the unique characteristics of wood pushing the boundaries to incorporate the authentic nature of wood in a new visual language that is fresh, bold and confident.

The exhibit, Knock on Wood includes panel paintings, intriguing sculptures with subliminal forms, and exhilarating installations juxtaposed to underscore the strength, beauty and sensual nature of wood.

The exhibit, Knock on Wood is an exceptional gift and officially forms part of an ongoing celebration for the Bird Road Art Walk’s fifth anniversary. Lecture Series Created to honor Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin
Temple Israel to host Professor Joseph Epstein

April 2016/Miami, FL/– Temple Israel of Greater Miami will welcome Professor Joseph Epstein who will kick off the inaugural lecture for the Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin Memorial Lecture Series on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 4pm. The topic of the inaugural lecture is Jewish humor. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Epstein is an essayist, short story writer, and editor. The author of more than 20 books, he was a lecturer at Northwestern University from 1974 to 2002 and is an Emeritus Lecturer of English there.

He is a contributing editor at The Weekly Standard and a long-time contributor of essays and short stories to The New Criterion and Commentary. In 2003, he was awarded a National Humanities Medal by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He originated the Enter Laughing feature which examines Jewish humor. William F. Buckley once wrote that he is “the wittiest” essayist alive.

This lecture is being underwritten by the Halperin families who created this lecture series to honor and remember their parents; Dr. Bernard Halperin and Jeanette Gordon Halperin.

“I have vivid memories of their passionate discussions about, among other things, Jewish culture, politics, movies, and books. Quite often, the most compelling lessons my parents taught me were sugar-coated with laughter,” said son Keith Halperin. “My siblings and I wanted to remember their love of laughter, and with Joe Epstein’s wit and wisdom, we could think of no better guest speaker to kick of this lecture series.”

Additional lectures will be planned in the future.

About Temple Israel of Greater Miami:

Founded in 1922 and located just north of Miami’s downtown business district, Temple Israel is Miami’s oldest Reform congregation.

Representing the voices of thousands of participants in hundreds of meetings over three years of development, the Miami-Dade County Parks and Open Space Masterplan addresses the interconnectedness of life, and the potential for parks to provide an infrastructure that builds individual, community, and ecological resiliency and well-being. The drawings illustrate a shared vision for an integrated system of great parks and public spaces, natural and cultural areas, all linked across the region through greenways, waterways, complete streets and sidewalks. Three fundamentals guide the plan:
• Placemaking – creating dynamic, resilient communities for all people
• Health and Fitness – enhancing individual, family, and community health and well-being
• Conservation and Stewardship – protecting open space, connecting children to nature, developing park stewards, and advancing conservation
Most importantly, the plan establishes a process of inquiry designed to support ongoing exploration to address the challenges and opportunities of the future, while preserving the significant ecological and cultural legacy of one America’s largest and most diverse park systems.

Miami, FL.- Imago “Art in Action” is a new cultural space opening on April 6th in the heart of Coral Gables. More than just another gallery, Imago Art in Action create and introduce an all-in-one multipurpose concept of cultural space with a purpose of contributing to growth and human development through the promotion of visual and fine arts and literature and committed to making inspiring experiences out of artistic expressions.

Ever since Miami´s cultural life began booming, the city seems friendlier and more humane to this kind of initiatives. Made up by Marlene Lebrun, Juanita Antonorsi, Raúl Lira, Thais Marquina and Trina Oropeza; a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs specialized in many areas of arts and culture with more than 30 years of experience, which they´ve used to set the basis of this new cultural proposal.

This all-in-one space, designed for the growth and amusement of each as a unique and social individual, offers children and adults the possibility of enjoying art and literature while channeling talents and gaining knowledge, making it a great contribution to the city.

The center includes two areas from the world of arts -Visual Arts and Hispanic-American literature- into four vital spaces for its functioning: The Gallery, The Library, The Workshops and The Designer-Objects Store.

Imago Art in Action will offer a permanent programming where the community will be able to enjoy visual arts exhibitions, a small library and lecture room, gallery talks, cinema forums, classes, a store and special events designed for guest of all ages.

“ON” the opening exhibition.

“ON” has been established as the first exhibition which Imago “Art in Action” will use to formally open its cultural center; Marisela Chivico, who is responsible for the text, said: “When a new space that is allocated to disseminate culture and to facilitate the merging of reflection and enjoyment of art emerges, a light and a flame are turned on; and so we thought it favorable to name our first project “ON”.

Chivico points out that “the showing is comprised of ten Venezuelan artists linked to speeches engraved in a diversity of interests, all related to contemporary art, with proposals that address and answer to current dynamics and aesthetics” Harry Abend, Pedro Terán, Nadia Benatar, Sigfredo Chacón, Vicente Antonorsi, Patricia Van Dalen, Isabel Cisneros, Javier León, Paulo Castro and Rafael Rangel will show the best of their small formats in an exhibit beginning April 6th through the end of July.

Just My Height Art Shows® brings fine art to young children’s eye level by displaying professional quality fine art at 36 inches high. Talking Off the Wall Magazine has been documenting the South Florida street-art scene for the past two years. These two organizations have joined forces to produce “Secret Doors,” a fine art show that will proudly feature 15 of South Florida’s best street artists and muralists to benefit ArtCares for Kids.

Sponsored by The Florida House Experience, VITAS Healthcare, Artist & Craftsman Supply, Aventura Mall and others, the show will feature family friendly street- and mural-style artwork.

The opening will feature games and hands-on art activities designed to engage patrons with the exhibits. Persons of all ages—from 2 to 102—are welcome to enjoy complementary light bites and age-appropriate beverages, including sponsored adult beverages provided by Peroni beer, with an open bar from 6 to 8 p.m., and a cash bar from 8 to 10 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to ArtCares for Kids, a Miami-based organization that takes art activities to children undergoing cancer and other intensive medical treatments at Jackson Memorial Holtz Children’s Hospital and Baptist Children’s Hospital. ArtCares for Kids will receive copies of a special coloring book comprised of the artwork being shown at the event. The “Secret Doors,” coloring book will be given to these children in an effort to raise their spirits and occupy their hands with bedside art projects.
