End your summer right with Floatopia! Come join us Sat Sept. 14!

For newbies, Floatopia is an epic party on innertubes that takes over South Pointe Park a couple times a year. And if you missed the last two of these buoyant bashes, now’s your chance to join the fun.

The original version of this floating soiree started in California back in 2004, and since 2012, Miami’s had its very own! Back in April, a bunch of Miamians people showed up to float up. Saturday Sept. 14th, we are doing it again!

No bouncers, no guest lists, no cover charge, no promoters, just good ol’ fashioned floating fun! Bring your float, raft, inner-tube, rubber tire or anything that floats and join us at South Pointe Park for an awesome day!

Notes:
Please PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF, let’s be kind to this beautiful beach!

Your “beverages” must be in discreet containers such as plastic bottles. Remember, NO glass bottles are allowed on the beach.

Get crazy…within legal limits. No drama, please. We are all one big, friendly, floating party family! :)

Peace, Love & Float on!

These international artists look at the ideologies that bind human users and technological objects. Each draws upon the traditions of minimalism and conceptual art and brings them to the present. Combing seminal work from the 1970s with newly commissioned and site-specific work, the gallery itself becomes a platform for innovation.

Featuring Luis Fernando Benedit, Ian Cheng, Jason Galbut, Lena Henke, Morag Keil, Oliver Laric, Ben Schumacher and John Keenen, Josh Smith, Jack Strange, Anicka Yi, Andrea Zittel, Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff

David Castillo Gallery presents TM Sisters’ Prismavolt Reception 9/12/13

David Castillo Gallery presents TM Sisters’ Prismavolt Reception
prismavoltThursday, September 12, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL  33127

September 12 – October 5, 2013
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Prismavolt, a solo exhibition by the TM Sisters in video installation, sculpture, collage and performance.

The TM Sisters engage with refraction, the bending of light and sound waves as they travel through different mediums. In Prismavolt, these mediums include natural elements, the body, creative practice, and human consciousness, and occur at sites as intimate as molecular anatomy and as mysterious as the deep sea. The artists use refraction to map moments of tranquility between emergent subjectivities and the invisible forces at work upon them.

Four wading figures become engulfed by mother-of-pearl irisation. It is a kinetic conversation between bodies and waves, an exchange of power, a brilliant photometeor. The iridescence is the result of film shot and projected through prisms. Like Goethe’s phenomenological inquiry into color, for which Newton’s optical spectrum is but one case study among boundless potential experiences, the TM Sisters pursue a generous interpretation of light’s manifestations and energies. In destabilizing light, the artists also complicate ontological views of creativity, calling instead upon aesthetic irruptions that are anarchical, autopoietic, prismatic.

In another film, a chandelier prism obscures the face of a figure while its hair blows freely in the wind. "There is no nature," Derrida writes, "only the effects of nature: denaturalization or naturalization."[1] Prismavolt takes place in the perpetual becoming of these effects. Nature, the artists demonstrate, is simultaneously refraction, body, and environment. When, in a third film, the outstretched arms of two figures sink spinning into the evening ocean, it is catharsis. Such clarity does not belong to a stagnant hierarchy of achievement, but rather to transversal cuts across planes remade new through simultaneous experiences.

Prismavolt’s attunement to the relationship between body and spirit is informed by the artists’ training in neurokinetic therapy and prismatic healing methods. The TM Sisters rethink the rainbow with a new pallet of colors correlating to experiences of consciousness reached by muscle-testing. Artworks in collage and sculpture exaggerate the aesthetic geometry of refraction. Prismavolt is not only a material exhibition, but also an institutional performance in conversation with Deleuze and Guattari’s project of schizoanalysis, an imminent meta-modeling of subjectivity. In contrast to psychoanalysis, schizoanalysis aims not to reduce and interpret, but rather to expand and produce.

In the legacy of Flavin, the TM Sisters explore light as a medium. In the spirit of Bas Jan Ader, they launch themselves across the other skin of the ocean. After Kandinsky, they advocate art’s agency in synesthetic spirituality. Perhaps Prismavolt’s deepest resonance, however, is with the Swedish Space Corporations’s 2010 project PRISMA, which launched two synchronized satellites in order to test formation flying and rendezvous technologies. After two months of maneuvering as one, the satellites separated from each other for the first time. How free is refraction? How discursive is color? How fixed is subjectivity? Light and sound, air and water, duel satellites, or the artists’ collaborative duo does not represent a movement beyond the borders of the body, but a movement of the borders themselves.

“Art transforms our lives by helping us explore the many facets of our abilities, without a worry or fear of making mistakes, or doing something incorrectly,” comments participating artist, Lorie Setton.  “Art helps us realize that there are many avenues to achievement. There is no ‘wrong answer’ in the art world (or the classroom), but there is an infinite amount of possibilities as to what we can create.”

This year’s artists are: Alena Beasley, Our Lady of the Lakes, Miami Lakes; Yunier Oliver Cervino, Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep, Miami; Caryne Havican Mender, ACND Gallery Manager and teacher for Miami-Dade Public Schools; Lorie Setton, David Posnak Hebrew Day School, Davie; Silvana Soriano, Arts for Learning, headquarted at the Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse in Wynwood; Catherine Wichmann, St. Anthony Catholic School, Fort Lauderdale; and Kerry Ware, St. Patrick Catholic School, Miami Beach and Ai Miami International University of Art and Design, Miami.

Each program and event is also designed to promote thought and discussion about the value of the arts in core education.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce the Members-only ticket pre-sale for our annual Smash & Grab Fundraiser. This year’s event will celebrate the organizations’ 15th Anniversary. There are only as many Smash Raffle tickets as artworks, and they always sell-out!

How it works: There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. The event revolves around a raffle, for which over one hundred local, national and international artists have donated artwork — enough so that each raffle ticket is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is a fun way to place artwork into collections, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

All RSVP emails must state (1) the number of people in the party (2) full names for everyone in the party (3) the date of the show they’d like to attend, and (4) time of arrival (between 7pm and 12am). Within 24 hours you will receive an email response to confirm your RSVP and reservation that will contain the address for the event and information for parking, directions, etc. Please include a phone number to receive a text message reminder the day of the event.

All attendees for all three private art shows will receive one free art print (while supplies last). Limited free refreshments will be available. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Most of the art on display will be priced between $10 and $50, with a few pieces priced between $300 and $500, and one piece that is $2,000, so there is something for everyone and everyone’s individual budgets.

All of the art on display is the work of Renda Writer, a known figure on the South Florida arts scene for almost a decade. Renda has played many roles in the local art scene, including spoken word poet, art magazine vice president and chief editor, as well as producer, host, and promoter of art and music events and open mic nights. He added “visual artist” to the list of roles he plays when he first started making art in late 2010, or, as Renda puts it, “I started making art when everything else stopped making sense. Art became my catharsis when everything I knew started to shift.” After nearly three years of creating, Renda is now ready to exhibit his entire body of work.

Most of the art on display will be what Renda Writer calls his “Handwritten Found Object Art.” This is his own personal take on the found object art genre. He writes on what he finds… a BMW hubcap, an air conditioning vent, a few metal reel-to-reel plate, some random street signs, a calendar from the salon industry, tons of furniture wood, chunks of drywall, some old records, a ceiling tile, a kitchen cabinet door. These are just some of the things that Renda has repurposed with the written word. He uses various colors of paint markers, and writes poems, phrases, aphorisms, and stream of consciousness musings that convey ideas and themes of wit, hope, humor, and curiosity.

In addition to the “Handwritten Found Object Art,” Renda will also be exhibiting three other styles of art, which include (1) his line of “Renda Writer Jewelry,” words and ideas written on necklace charms, (2) pieces from his original “Handwritten Art” series from 2010-2011, framed sheets from a small yellow legal pad, covered with poetry and stream of consciousness thoughts, all written in blue ink, in his signature small handwritten print and (3) pieces from the “Renda Hitz Hearts” collection, an ongoing collaboration project with his friend, Billy Hitz, where the two men create eye-catching heart-shaped pieces of art and interior design accents out of carpet.

Renda is naming the private art show series “Art Will Save You” because, as he says, “Art has saved me in many ways… ways I can’t even really explain. To me, that’s what art does. It saves you. It saves the artist who makes it, the people who view it, and the people who buy it and incorporate it into their homes, and their lives. It changes you, influences you, inspires you, and… saves you.”

Photographs by Antony Jordon of “Rock Your Baby” Fundraising Reception on 8/8/13

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon from “Rock Your Baby” fundraising reception on Thursday, August 8, 2013.

“Rock Your Baby” is a documentary on the life of Henry Stone and the music from Miami that changed the world.

Henry Stone Music and Beacon Films hosted a fundraising reception to introduce the community to the upcoming documentary Rock Your Baby. Rock Your Baby is a uniquely American story of how a group of individuals with raw talent and diverse backgrounds, led by the indefatigable determination and genius of one man, exported the music of Miami to the world. That man is Henry Stone. Over sixty invited guests enjoyed clips from the movie and were introduced to the creators, the Producers Mitchell and Debra Egber, Director Mark Moormann, and, of course, the man himself, Henry Stone. Appetizing hors d’eouvres were provided by Chef Inspired Creations.

For more information about the film and the history, check out the Rock Your Baby Movie website. Contributions to the film may be made through the fiscal sponsor, Life Is Art.

Art has always been a tool to claim space, build power and to question the injustices that have shaped our social experience. In the world of art and culture, artists are responsible to offer the viewer a chance to challenge society bringing new means to the way we perceived the world. Culture is a space where we can introduce ideas, attach emotions, change values and find inspiration. Art is where we can change the narrative, because it’s where we can imagine what change looks and feels like. IRREVERSIBLE A Creative practice “Change the Culture, Change the World” is an open exhibition invitation to disrupt our expectations, allowing for new ways of thinking, new dialogues, and new ideas.

The exhibit integrates many of the elements and mediums that the artist has engaged with over the last several years. In “Summer Crush” , MANO’s beach-goers evoke a sense of nostalgia and memories of more innocent times when White Castle burgers, hot mustangs, and cruising the board walk were the essentials for a perfect summer or was it a summer crush that made everything seem perfect.

Coming to a stage near you! ARTfusion, Delray Inc. is proud to announce the launching of its innovative and interactive program, Theatrical Fusion. Youa re invited to this special kickoff event and reception. Join us for complimentary Wine & Hors d’oeuvres and get to know ARTFusion!

Theatrical Fusion implements improvisational theater techniques to engage audiences and maintain interaction. The program uses the arts as a vehicle for community building, education and social change. Its goal is to provide “edutainment” and help members of the community make choices that will positively impact their lives. Funding for this nonprofit program was made possible through the Love One Another Foundation represented by Cousin’s Law of West Palm Beach.

Twelve performances are now being scheduled ranging from Summer 2013 to Spring 2014, in which participating organizations will have the opportunity to promote their causes. “We bring our actors and plays for free or for a small donation to host sites” Kamysha Martin, Executive Director of ARTfusion Delray, said. “The stage serves a platform for interaction. Each play allows the audience members to be a part of the host’s organization message and/or chime in on the topic”. Organizations are being urged to call and reserve a date as soon as possible for Theatrical Fusion booking. “We are very pleased with the reception of this program, but yes, there are still a handful of more opportunities left on the schedule”, says Ms. Martin.

In partnership with the Global Business Development Center, the program is purposely designed to create jobs by hiring local actors, create social change by discussing serious topics, and assist community partners through community outreach. “We are doing a second round actors call, requesting submission and in person auditions are being scheduled,” Martin said. The program also brings in subject matter experts to facilitate discussion on topics including bullying, cyber stalking, domestic violence, teen dating violence, financial education, substance abuse, teen pregnancy prevention, healthy choices, HIV/AIDS, parenting and topics specific to the aging community and their families.

ARTfusion Delray’s mission is to utilize the ARTS for social change.

Parallels Paths diverge, yet we co-exist Opening Night plus Performance 7/20/13

Parallels Paths diverge, yet we co-exist Opening Night plus Performance
parallels_flyerFrontSaturday, July 20th – 7pm-11pm
1310 Gallery, Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts
1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.)
Ft. Lauderdale, 33312

Admission = Free & Open to the Public

Look at the world we live in. Our simultaneous existence as a generation binds us together, yet we each diverge on different paths.  Our journeys are unique and diverse, yet we co-exist… close in proximity, yet distant, living and transitioning, breathing and traveling together as an expression of the collective self.

The artists in PARALLELS visualize how they are part of a generation that is free to roam and find one’s own particular destination of infinite possibilities. The artists work makes you pause and observe the beauty in the contrasts that connects and divides us as a community- truly unified not only by our similarities yet by our divine right and responsibility to create and evolve differently as individuals. They are inspired by the freedom of being who they are meant to be.

Lopez, a founding member of the 1310 Gallery, which was recently  featured in the Broward New Times as "The Best of Art Gallery of 2013", understands the importance of  reflecting on these Parallels and creates the time and space for diverse visual artists and performance artists to share a reflection of their co-existence.

Visual Artists include: Niki Lopez, Alexis Menendez, Laurian MacDonald, Michael Maccarone, Lucy Stephens , Julian Acosta, Xavier Cortes, Kareem Piper, Marc Cranford, Marc Hilton, Susan S. Buzzi, Beatrice McClelland, Marc Cohen, Cat Rocco, Tabatha Mudra, Jessica Kizorek, Sista Idya, Kaht Marley, Naylet Leon,  Eve Bessendorf, and Vincent Alexander.

Opening night performances include: Profound Breadth, DJ Onestar, Alana DaCosta, Vanya Allen and more.

Community Partner: The FLITE Center – College Boost Program. The FLITE Center, supported by a coalition of service providers, is a central resource for youth that prepares them to live successful lives after leaving foster care.

Photograph of Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on 6/27/13

Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on Thursday, June 27, 2013.  This is an amazing exhibition I had no idea that Opa-Locka had such an interesting and wonderful history.  The exhibition runs from June 28, 2013 – September 08, 2013, this a must see.

“Opa-locka: Mirage City explores one of South Florida’s most unique architectural communities. Based on stories and names of characters from the Arabian Tales, Opa-locka presents itself as both eccentric dream; an exotic Middle-eastern urban oasis in a subtropical paradise, and tourist’s kitsch; an architectural conceit more akin to a Hollywood film set. Founded in the 1920s in an undeveloped area of northwest Miami-Dade, the city is a highly romanticized interpretation of an exotic cultural milieu popularized by Hollywood films and archeological discoveries of its time. The exhibition presents original drawings and architectural models that reintroduce the original fabled vision, aiming to rouse interest in the city’s iconic structural design and encourage efforts to preserve its endangered architectural heritage.”

Average Joe Art Sale, All Grown Up edition 7/7/13

Average Joe Art Sale, All Grown Up edition
Sunday, July 7, 2013, 4:00pm until 9:00pm
joeYo Space
294 NE 62nd St
Miami, Florida 33138
Facebook Evite

"Just like your kids, at a certain point it’s time for our events to grow up and start demanding more from us. Now that Yo Miami’s monthly Average Joe Art Sale has been around for a little over a year it’s time to take things to the next level. First and foremost, the element of accessibility will definitely be maintained despite increasing the price cap to $500 (previously $250). Just because the maximum price is being raised, doesn’t mean we’re forsaking the more affordable work; we will continue to offer a range of work from $5 all the way on up to $500.

The need for this change has risen from a desire to offer a wider and more evolved variety of work to our monthly patrons. While we’ve been lucky enough in our relationships with local artists to get work drastically discounted specially for us, at a certain point we need to offer artists the chance to fairly value their work too. Not only will this new price point allow artists to show a better range of their existing work, but it will allow us to introduce visitors to artists who were previously unable to participate because of the low price point.

In light of this new development we’d also like to announce another novelty to the Average Joe lineup. Every two months, we’ll be introducing a new featured artist who will be decorating an entire wall with their own installation. We’re excited to announce that Ruben Ubiera (Miami New Times’ Best Street Artist of 2012) is going to be the first in this new series of artists. He will be creating a mural inside the space on one wall, that will also display artwork that he’s creating just for the sale.

Otherwise we plan on continuing to evolve little by little each month, adding and subtracting elements based on visitor feedback. Some minor adjustments to note in particular include our print shop filled with affordable prints, smaller works, and merch ranging from $5-$50; also this month we’ll have The Kult (Wasabi Fashion Kult’s apparel shop) in the house with a pop up shop. As always we’ll have our custom-painted ping pong table open for play, old school video games on a projector, and Los Chamos food truck out front.

Join us for us for the AIRIE Summer Salon, an intimate gathering to benefit the Artists in Residence in Everglades program. Situated on the original Haden mango plantation, a stone’s throw from the house where environmentalist and Everglades advocate Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrote River of Grass, Ms. Ricordi’s historic Coconut Grove home is the perfect setting to enjoy a live performance by current artist in residence Ana Mendez, an audio installation by Gustavo Matamoros, work from the AIRIE collection, and light refreshments from local chefs.

AIRIE offers artists the opportunity to get to know the ecology of the Everglades by being immersed in it. By shadowing scientists in the field, hiking through the pinelands, kayaking through mangroves, and exploring Cape Sable and the 10,000 Islands, artists find the inspiration to create new work. They develop a deep understanding of the Everglades’ ecological importance, and then share their perspective through their work and creative public programs.

South Florida is home to the only subtropical wilderness in the country, and AIRIE is the only program bringing artists to the Everglades. AIRIE connects artists, writers and musicians to the Everglades by providing month-long residencies in the Park. Each visual artist donates a work inspired by their residency for the Park collection, and writers and composers offer some publication rights, creating an outstanding body of nature inspired contemporary art and music. “In a park known for its spectacular and diverse wildlife, the art and voices of AIRIE artists reveal other unique, and often missed, dimensions of this special place,” remarks Park Superintendent Dan Kimball.

Curated by Ombretta Agro’ Andruff, Unpredictable Patterns of Behavior presents 12 artists, architects and composers that relate to patterns in very unique and distinctive ways. Whether they extrapolate natural patterns and integrate them in their art-making processes, or play with geometrical patterns, or yet create their own patterns inspired by existing man-made landscapes or by invented systems, they all offer us the opportunity to go beyond the pure aesthetic enjoyment of the artworks featured in the galleries, and reflect upon the patterns that served as their inspirations. This exhibition is a sequel to Agro’ Andruff’s 2012 New York exhibition, “(Un) Folding Patterns.”  The New York show focused on the relationship between mathematics and the visual arts. This sequel explores how creative minds interpret patterns across the artistic disciplines.

FrostArt Presents Who Are We? Who Are They? Opening 6/8/13

FrostArt Presents Who Are We? Who Are They? Opening
Saturday, June 8, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
frostmuseum-05-31-13The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum.
10975 SW 17th Street
Miami, FL 33199

Admission:  FREE

FrostArt (The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU) introduces two new exhibitions, both of which feature art as a tool to establish identity: How we see ourselves and how we perceive others, now and in the past. The two exhibitions, Six Degrees of Separate Nations: Ebony G. Patterson and Peterson Kamwathi, and Borders of Paradise: In the Eyes of Explorers, will have an opening reception on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the Frost Art Museum, from 6pm-8pm. The wine and hors d’oeuvres reception is open to the public and free of charge.

The featured artists in the Six Degrees of Separate Nations, Ebony G. Patterson and Peterson Kamwathi, are from vastly different parts of the world, Jamaica and Kenya, respectively. Despite the geographical distance between them, they ironically share much in common. The influence of colonialism and the repercussions of colonial history have impacted how these artists perceive themselves today, as well as how they place themselves in proximity to the "other". A significant theme underlying both artists’ work – and thus the exhibition – is the examination of social behavior, specifically that of performance and theatricality. Ebony’s documentation, staging and appropriation of contemporary fashion, its insignia and pattern, explore the implicit link of dress code to social and political expression. Peterson Kamwathi, on the other hand, depicts theatrical social performance without appropriating its modes; rather taking on the role of an observer, he extra cts modes of behavior, staging scenarios that express the farcical nature of masquerade inherent to social conventions, and imposed political norms that are both inherited from colonial rule, and re-appropriated.

The exhibition, curated by Claire Breukel, will feature a collaborative installation where the artists will meet for the first time and respond to each other’s work. The Six Degrees of Separate Nations exhibition will run through September 8, 2013. The opening reception will be preceded by a panel discussion with the artists, the curator and guest speaker, University of Miami Professor Patricia Saunders, at 4:00 p.m., also at the Frost Art Museum. Like the reception, the panel discussion is open to the public and free of charge.

The second exhibition opening on June 8, Borders of Paradise: In the Eyes of Explorers, focuses on historical identity. Imagined and exaggerated depictions of the new continent and its offerings persisted through the nineteenth century, satisfying the appetites of curious Europeans hungry for tales of mysterious lost paradises and evolving primitive worlds. This exhibition, curated by Cynthia Duval of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, features maps, etchings and engravings, many of which appeared in literary works, which helped to reinforce and shape the Old World’s skewed perception of life in the New World. The Borders of Paradise exhibition will run through August 25, 2013.

In addition to these new exhibits, the following current exhibitions will be on display at the Museum on June 8:
• José Manuel Ballester: Concealed Spaces
• Deep Blue by Javier Velasco
• Spanish Colonial Art: The Beauty of Two Traditions

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (WKB), Miami’s Global-Latino dining destination featuring dynamic art, innovative cocktails and live music, is launching a series of chef/artist collaborative dinners, teaming up Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar with celebrated Wynwood Walls artists. In a feast for the eyes, the series incorporates culinary expertise with the masterminds behind Miami’s graffiti and street art scene, kicking off with Miami-based, Santiago Rubino.

“WKB is known for its location in the heart of Wynwood, where art and food are fused every day, so it only made sense to bring the two together for a unique dining experience,” said Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar. As the first installment of the collaborative dinner series, the evening promises to push the boundaries between conventional supper clubs and artist previews. “I have a deep appreciation for food. It can say a lot about who you are. Most of the inspiration for my art comes from nature and history, so my diet of plant-based foods and seafood, allows me to start each day fresh,” says artist Santiago Rubino.

The menu for the evening was created by Aguilar and Rubino, and reflects the artist’s diet and favorite dishes with the spices and flavors of his native Argentina. Guests will also receive a commemorative menu designed and signed by Rubino and Aguilar.

Menu is as follows:
Smoked Tuna Empanadas
Capers, tomatoes, escabeche

Avocado Romaine Salad
Toasted almonds, yellow tomatoes, balsamic sesame dressing

Grilled Chilean Sea Bass
Boniato purée, chimichurri

Chocolate Alfajores
Argentina confection

Throughout the evening, a variety of Rubino’s work will be available for purchase at the GoShop, a retail emporium located onsite at the Wynwood Walls, featuring an inventory of artists’ books, bags, and one-of-a-kind creations.

MANO Fine Art presents an extraordinary visual interplay of art and language. The exhibition entitled “Part of A Conversation” features contemporary works by twelve Miami-based artists. The works are as individual as the artists themselves with the common denominator being the combination of text and imagery to create provocative insightful and playful visual dialogues with the viewer. Passages of text, letter forms and remarkable gestural strokes that suggest writing yet remain illegible engage the viewer to “read” the artworks. While other works focus on repetitive patterns, such as linear rows and geometric shapes. Mostly, however, “reading” the artwork encourages viewers to be part of a conversation.

Over the last two decades, Miami-based composer Dorothy Hindman has created music that delves into process, perception, profundity, and entropy. On her debut solo release Tapping the Furnace, her fascinating and ear-grabbing works are interpreted by some of today’s top new music performers, including cellist Craig Hultgren, pianist Laura Gordy, guitarist Paul Bowman, and percussionist Stuart Gerber. The result is a wide-ranging collection that touches on the visceral contained within Hindman’s highly structured compositions.

To experience the work of Maitejosune Urrechaga is similar in character to these psycholinguistic phenomenon. For her solo show, Maitejosune explores through portraiture the universal experience of unconscious thoughts and impulses as yet unexplained by science or spirituality.

Kiki Valdes The Valdeziacs Closing Reception 5/9/13

Kiki Valdes “The Valdeziacs Closing Reception”
valdeziacsThursday, May 9, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
101 Exhibit LLC
101 NE 40th St
Miami, Florida 33137-3511

Please join us for the closing reception of the ‘Valdeziacs”

The Michael Margulies Artist Agency is proud to present “The Valdeziacs” a solo exhibition featuring new works from painter Kiki Valdes. “The Valdeziacs” is the culmination of Valdes’ most recent works. Many of the current paintings move into a new direction for the artist. Cartoon characters provide the first entry point to Valdes’ complex explorations of layered cut canvas collages, abstractions and figurative cartoon imagery. He paints the excited, cryptic images of bubbly faces and toon masks to convey a feeling of childhood nostalgia as a visual tactic to address space and form.

Valdes sees the cartoon imagery as a way to communicate and connect with a wider audience by conjuring memories. Cartoons have seeped into our consciousness since childhood and the artist uses those recognizable images and memories as prop for questions about painting and our obsession with the familiar. The new works in “The Valdeziacs,” the title in itself is a nod to childhood nostalgia, plays with form. Valdes turns various characteristics of known cartoon figures into a complete abstraction. Certain qualities like curves, exaggerated eyes and big mouth emphasize the duality of his compositions and create a battle between the familiar graphic figuration and what is familiar in painting. Valdes creates a place where darkness and light meet. He merges both and they open a dialogue and leave space for interpretation.

National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill 25th Annual Exhibition Opening Reception
May 10, 2013, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Borders Picture Framing Gallery
1601 SW 1st Street
Miami, FL 33135

Admission:   Free

The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI), an organization dedicated to collecting, displaying and selling of art by persons in recovery from mental illness, will open its 25th annual exhibition on May 10th at Borders Picture Framing Gallery in Miami.
Lucia Balleste.

"Mental illness has been in the news a lot recently. We want to blame it for many things it is not. Crimes are committed by many people with no mental illness all the time and more people than you think are receiving therapy or taking medication for mental illnesses and live normal lives.

Art therapy is one way of bringing happiness to all people and NAEMI (National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill) has been promoting that for over 25 years. By holding the exhibition during May, we hope to bring additional attention to the struggle of those who have been diagnosed with mental illness," said NAEMI’s Founder Juan Martin. "Our ultimate goal is to help these artists be recognized and fight the stigma that so often accompanies mental illness."

The exhibition features works of artists from Paraguay, Chile, Cuba, Spain and the United States. All 43 artworks featured in the exhibition will be available for sale, with the proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goals of helping artists from around the world.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

20 Shades of Grey and Reclaimed Miami Opening Reception 5/11/13

20 Shades of Grey and Reclaimed Miami Opening Reception
reclaimedMay 11th, 2013 from 2pm to 10pm
Zadok Gallery
2534 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL  33127

Reclaimed Miami
Recycling has taken the forefront in our collective consciousness, from hybrid auto technology, to alternative power sources, to simply using the right bin for discarding our water bottles. At Zadok Gallery, that trend line continues in the work of 10 Miami-based multidisciplinary artists who have adapted their methodology to utilize a variety of nontraditional materials. Reclaimed Miami, on view at Zadok Gallery from May 11th to July 4th, is about imaginatively re-purposing objects all around us that might not strike the average viewer as fodder for fine art. Wielding innovative artistic techniques and strategies that include knitting, embroidery, silk screening, welding, crocheting, gluing, folding, appropriating, and stuffing, the group transforms litter into objects of literal beauty that offer an engaging visual reconciliation of material excess and environmental concern.

20 Shades of Grey
The artists chosen to be in 20 Shades of Grey at Zadok Gallery are at least 70 years young or older and have been making their mark in our city before Art Basel, Art Fair Week, Art Miami, or the graffiti walls arrived. Artists do not retire. Their creative juices do not stop flowing at the arbitrary retirement age of 65. The artists in 20 Shades of Grey are fervent and tenacious about their work.
This exhibition does not pretend to be a comprehensive survey of those contemporary artists in this age group. The sheer number of artists in such a survey would be beyond our physical capabilities. This exhibition does illustrate the rewards of discipline, hard work, perseverance, and a lifetime of dedication. Each artist’s unending and unresolved struggle with their life’s work is, in itself, its own reward. Each of the artists is creating a legacy to be reckoned with by the art historians.
This exhibition honors those who have dedicated their lives to their art and have achieved the position of Florida National Treasures.

Jillian Mayer: Precipice/PostModem
Project Room: Tracey Goodman & Valerie Snobeck: Out of Place
Curated by Joanna Kleinberg Romanow, Assistant Curator, Drawing Center, NY

Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present Precipice/PostModem by Miami-based artist Jillian Mayer. Mayer is known for eclectic video installations that compress virtual, cinematic, and physical space. This will be Mayer’s largest exhibition to date, passing fluidly from cinema to installation in both the physical and digital realm while incorporating interactive and technological elements to create a nonlinear meta-narrative.
The exhibition will feature sculptural and installation work satirically exploring the concept of a technological singularity, the theoretical moment in time when the boundary between human and machine no longer exists. Mayer uses comedy as a means to inspire introspection about technology’s place as a surrogate for spirituality in our lives, and implies that it is quickly becoming much more, regardless of whether or not the predictions of futurists like Ray Kurzweil come to fruition. The various pieces of her show explore the ramifications of this impending change, from angles that range from sociological to parodic to sublime.
Works include A Place for Online Dreaming, an installation with performance, linked to an interactive website at Aplaceforonlinedreaming.com as well as Swing Space, another video installation featuring several performers on swings above the gallery floor, transfixed by a projected digital reality; and For U, a sculpture that exists in augmented reality and can only be fully seen through a custom smartphone app. Other works will include self-aware paintings, faux infomercials, and poorly articulated androids constructed of digital tablets and Roomba vacuum cleaners.
Precipice/PostModem builds on a body of work that began with the experimental short film #PostModem which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013 and was later featured in an independent film retrospective at MoMA in New York as part of the Carte Blanche series.

BEYOND THE INVISIBLE
From May 20 to July 20, 2013
Artist Talk and Reception: July 20, 6-9pm
Venue: Art Parks at Young Circle Gallery,
Hollywood Blvd and US1, Hollywood, FL

“BEYOND THE INVISIBLE”, the art exhibition of Carla Fache’s new works, investigates the transformative effects of color, expanded balance expectations of the painted medium, and the artist’s unique process.

Fache’s intention to interpretate the spaces between the material and the emptiness; making visible the unconsciousness of physics through exploring the subconscious links that connects balance, brings to life her new series of work which unveils hidden dimensions through her paintings.

In this new aggressive line of work, Fache delves further into her studio practice by creating a balance proposal beyond the frontiers of the canvas, interplaying between color and material; and by layering colors that evoke the acceleration of matter across a surface, light through space, and action over time in ways that blur conventional definitions of painting.

Fache’s new paintings are charged with an intuitive spontaneity; the intensity of her colors and her experimental approach to process are linked in her search for the interconnection between the concept of space and its viewer, building perspectives through the exploration of balance, space and spontaneous geometrics. Which, guided by the command of light and vibration, boost paradoxical color effects.

“These new paintings are all about exploring the color balance, the intuitive and all the in between”, explains Fache.

Her work and Bio may be viewed at www.carlafache.com

BEYOND THE INVISIBLE Art Exhibition runs from May 20 to July 20, 2013. Artist talk and reception is on July 20. About Gallery 2014

Gallery 2014, an exciting, new nonprofit concept established to bring the community together to celebrate, enjoy, learn and acquire exceptional artwork of emerging artists from around the globe, is a host venue for the worldwide April 27 Slow Art Day. The all-volunteer event has a simple mission: to help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.

At Gallery 2014, participants will look at five works of pre-assigned art at Gallery 2014 for 10 minutes each, and then meet together over lunch to discuss their experience at the nearby Cinquecento Pizza Gelato & Café. To sign up and for more information, visit www.slowartday.com.

Slow Art Day began after founder Phil Terry spent 30 minutes looking at Hans Hoffmann’s 1943 painting Fantasia at the Jewish Museum’s 2008 exhibition Action/Abstraction. The experience sparked an idea to help those outside the art world better appreciate museums’ offerings.

The newest member of South Florida’s art community, the Sanjuan-Brown Hollywood Arts Foundation, Inc. d/b/a Gallery 2014 provides an unprecedented opportunity for new and emerging artists from developing countries, as well as local and student artists who might otherwise lack access to the public, to showcase their quality, original pieces and sell them for fair value. Background info on all the current Gallery 2014 artists is available at www.gallery2014.com/artists.html .

The newest gallery to open in Miami, C-Art Gallery, in collaboration with the prestigious Marlborough Gallery in New York, is pleased to present  “Reflections.” Curated by Kosme de Baraños, the show will take place as a “pop-up” exhibition, as the gallery will reveal its permanent home at a later date.

For his first solo exhibition in Miami, David Rodriguez Caballero presents thirty aluminum, brass and vinyl art works. His characteristic aluminum and brass pieces are from his metal series, while his vinyl works form part of an independent series that juxtaposes different layers of monochrome acetate resulting in a paint-like finish. The exhibit is comprised of geometric abstractions, wall installations and freestanding sculptures, taking spectators on a journey through the artist’s transition from three-dimensionality to sculpture.

David Rodríguez Caballero arrives in Miami for his solo exhibition after a strong showing at the Marlborough New York (Recent Works, Marlborough Chelsea, February 2012), and Madrid (Ongoing pieces, Marlborough Madrid, November 2012) that were well received by the public, critics and art collectors. In addition, his work was recently showcased at Art Basel Miami Beach, The Armory Show and Arco.

“I am honored that C-Art Gallery has given me this opportunity. Guests will be able to observe the breadth of my work, from my characteristic brass and aluminum pieces, to my recent aesthetic investigations and combinations of organic elements with inorganic elements.  The inspirations derived from living in New York over the past two years are apparent in my newer pieces — the skyscrapers and concrete mix with my visual thinking to produce abstract configurations,” said Rodriguez Caballero.

Director of C-Art Gallery Cesar Rodriguez stated, “we are excited to launch C-Art with such a visionary artist, it sets the tone for what we plan to do next. We are convinced that David’s work is an excellent option for contemporary art collectors throughout South Florida and Latin America, and are certain locals will enjoy the show.

“I am thrilled that his work will be showcased in Miami, his pieces will captivate both art collectors and art aficionados,” quipped Curator Kosme de Baraño. David Rodríguez Caballero is already creating the art works that will be shown in future exhibits, i.e. at the Carmen de Valencia Center in Spain in June of 2013, and the Monaco outpost of the Marlborough next October.

The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery has acquired several large scale Elman portraits. Most recently, it acquired Elman’s portraits of Pulitzer Prize recipient Jhumpa Lahiri and U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. These acquisitions join Elman’s portraits of Pulitzer Prize recipients Alan Dugan and Stanley Kunitz in the museum’s permanent collection. Elman’s 1991 portrait of poet Stanley Kunitz standing in his beloved garden following its devastation by Hurricane Bob is included in a current exhibition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery titled Poetic Likeness: Modern American Poets. That exhibition continues until April 28, 2013.

Elman has made over 200 paintings in this series of notable talents such as Norman Mailer, Robert Motherwell, Douglas Huebler, Justin Kaplan, Joel Meyerowitz, Annie Dillard, Mark Strand, Sebastian Junger, Alec Wilkinson, E.J. Kahn, Jr., Varujan Boghosian, Al Jaffee, Lee Falk, Elise Asher, Anne Bernays, and Ruth Reichl. The dimensions of most works are either 60 x 43 inches or 40 x 30 inches.

Elman has maintained a studio on the tip of Cape Cod in the Provincetown Art Colony since 1970. In 1989, after a half-lifetime of making only abstract art, he started portraying the Provincetown Art community at leisure – what people do when they are not working – the fabric of life that draws people back every year. Now a full-time Miami Beach resident, Elman has turned his focus to portraying the people and culture of Miami.

Grand Opening Celebration
Sponsored by Chivas Regal
$10 Admission; Free for BAC Members and Miami Museum Month Participating Organizations’ Members

The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC), South Florida’s premiere center for emerging and mid-career artists, proudly announces the completion of the Audrey Love Pavilion.

The Audrey Love Charitable Foundation recognized the Bakehouse Art Complex for its role in the fabric of Miami’s cultural community with a gift of $250,000. The renovation, funded by the grant, has completely transformed and improved the main entrance to the facility. With its signature flour silos still intact, BAC has converted the courtyard into an inviting outdoor event space. Award-winning architectural firm Shulman + Associates, located in Miami’s Design District, designed the renovations to enable patrons to experience the BAC in a whole new light. New features include a pedestrian ramp with integrated seating leading up to new large glass doors, a window looking into the gallery, a stage for performances, and state-of-the-art lighting. The renovation also provides the opportunity for BAC resident artists working with large scale sculptures to showcase their work outside of the building.

"This is the first significant capital development project since the organization’s inception nearly 27 years ago. We are so very grateful to the Audrey Love Foundation, Shulman + Associates, and our board member, Dr. Robert Apfel, for their support and dedication to the Bakehouse Art Complex," expressed Arlys Raymond, Executive Director of the Bakehouse Art Complex.

The late Audrey Love of The Audrey Love Foundation was a lifelong patron of the arts, a benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Opera, an early supporter of the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, The Frost Museum at FIU, and the Florida Grand Opera. Audrey Love passed away in 2003 at the age of 100. The foundation’s recognition of the Bakehouse Art Complex signifies an appreciation for the facility’s 25-year commitment to creativity in the visual arts in Miami and its commitment to the future. And it has given the Bakehouse Art Complex the opportunity, and excuse, to let her name live on in Miami attached to a physical entity, The Audrey Love Gallery and Pavilion.

Communication would be sporadic; remembrances of earlier conversations, intermittent pictures and short emails. The games of their youth informed many bodies of work for each of them; in the form of photography for Daniel and sculpture, film and installation for JJ.
Daniel Peet’s photographs are a visual tour of the disarming, forgotten, and astonishing scenes he comes across scouring the streets of his hometown, Saint Paul, Minnesota. In addition, he has made large photographic panels featuring what he calls Everyday Objects.
JJ PEET has been the Resistance, the Luxury Leader, and the Sunday Painter. His work is produced inside a series of small studios. He makes paintings, sculptures, film and drawing.

Their collaborative exhibition will be on view at Gallery Diet through June 1st, 2013. This is the first time Daniel is exhibiting in Miami. This will be JJ’s second exhibition at Diet.

The exhibition will be on display until April 25th, 2013. For more information or to rsvp for the opening reception please send an email to info@ca-doro.com.

From Europe to Miami, Galleria Ca’d’Oro in collaboration with Icon Brickell, present the best selection of world-renowned artists under one roof on Saturday, April 20th, 2013 from 6pm-8pm at Galleria Ca’d’Oro’s ground floor gallery at the Village of Merrick Park – 358 San Lorenzo Avenue, Suite 1505, Coral Gables.

The exhibition highlights the works of Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí, the environmentally conscious Cracking Art Group (creators of the iconic pink snails), costume and set designer Ewa Bathelier, eco-friendly artist Erika Calesini, Renzo Nucara, William Sweetlove, Gloria Sesana, Enzo Carnebianca, Ivan Lardschneider and CamBio, among other members of the Ca’d’Oro family exhibited at the gallery.

Featuring over 50 works of art, the exhibition spans from sculptures to paintings. Artist Ewa Bathalier, born in Varsavia, paints large dresses and ballet tutus, transmitting a sense of elegance and timeless fashion, sublimed by a fine minimalism. Her works of art are exhibited in galleries and collections around the world: Paris, Strasburg, Houston, New York, Los Angeles and in prestigious public places, as the Opera, the Citè de la Musique and the Danse in Strasburg. Erika Calesini, the Italian artist with a passion for finding bicycles in the metal collections points; pulls them away from their destiny by offering them eternity by transforming them into pieces of art. The bicycles become paintings, lamps, furniture and anything else that the passion for these objects lets create.

William Sweetlove, born in Belgium, proposes us to re-examine the future and the environment with his colorful toy-like dog sculptures, wearing tiny boots and water bottles, frogs, and giant crocodiles with backpacks and water bottles made out of recyclable resin, plastic, and aluminum. He thrives on the superficial, placing it in razor-sharp contrast to the sententious. Through a number of variations on the same theme he creates friction between the artificial and the substantial, completely obliterating the boundaries between toy and work of art. Sweetlove belongs to the artists’ collective, Cracking Art Group, which consists of six European artists, based in Northern Italy. Together they create colorful larger than life animal sculptures (rabbits, frogs, snails, turtles, dolphins) made out recyclable plastic to bring environmental awareness into the consciousness of society. Active and frequent participants in art events and exhibitions over more than a decade, Cracking Art Group is perhaps best known for their outdoor installations around the world. Their most recent exhibition in Miami was FOReverglades where giant alligators crawled up and down the MDC Museum of Art + Design (also known as the historic Freedom Tower), during Art Week Miami 2012.

Each artist in this group exhibition brings a unique and fresh perspective on European contemporary art. "Icon Brickell is truly one of the masterpieces of Miami`s new skyline design and architecture; for everyone who resides or visits Icon Brickell, art is everywhere around you at this wonderful building.” says Gloria Porcella, co-owner of Galleria Ca’d’Oro. “In partnering with world famous Italian art gallery Ca’d’Oro for an exclusive resident’s event, Icon Brickell is opening its doors and welcoming European art to one of Miami’s finest addresses."

Eve Sussman | Rufus Corporation is a presentation of the video artist’s recent projects. This exhibition will present two major video installations, including an entirely new exploration of her noted film The Rape of the Sabine Women. A feature-length video-musical, The Rape of the Sabine Women is a contemporary reinterpretation of the eponymous Roman legend in a domestic 1960s setting, which Sussman has transformed into a five-part video installation. Also on view will be her 89 Seconds at Alcázar, a film based on the Diego Velázquez’s enigmatic Las Meninas, 1656. In this work, Sussman uses film to elucidate the circumstances of the exact moment that the painting aims to portray, a moment that has become immortalized in one of the most important paintings in art history.

‘Low’ Art? Well, Yes and No …
New Art Show Brings Fine Art to Young Children’s Eye Level

Miami, Fla.—“More than Meets the Eye,” opening Friday, April 19, 2013, from 7 to 10 p.m., at Prints Giclée Shop, 8747 SW 134th Street, presents a fun new twist on art shows—no piece of artwork will be hung or exhibited any higher than three feet off the ground, thus “lowering” the art to young children’s eye level.

“The artwork won’t be ‘childish’—it will be PG-13—but it will be displayed so children as young as 3 to 5 years old can easily see it,” said show creator, co-curator and Miami artist Christine Lyall. She added that children of all ages are welcome to attend and admission is free. Also curating are Miami artists Aida Tejada and Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo, who owns and operates Prints Giclée Shop.

Ms. Lyall said she thought of the show’s concept when she noticed a young boy at an art show straining to see a piece of her work hanging on a wall. The boy’s father could see the piece just fine. The boy could not.

“I thought, ‘What if an entire professional art show were designed specifically for children?’ It seems so simple, and yet, I’ve never seen it done before,” said Ms. Lyall. “Children have a natural appreciation for and curiosity about art, and they often see things in art that adults, who tend to be more critical, don’t see. And yet, most art shows automatically exclude children as viewers because everything, unless it’s big, is too high for them to see.”

With governments cutting back on arts funding and school districts slashing their arts education budgets, “it’s increasingly important to find other ways to cultivate children’s appreciation for art,” said Ms. Lyall. “We hope this art-show concept helps.”

More than a dozen South Florida artists representing a diversity of styles and media (so children can see the many ways in which art can be rendered) are participating in “More than Meets the Eye,” including:

Aduni Abu Bakar—Sumi Ink Painting Marilyn Lemay—Watercolor
Leonel D’cröix—Digital Painting Adriano Nicot—Painting
Jose Luis Dias Montero—Mixed Media Jee Yung Park—Mixed Media

Multiplicity is defined as the quality or state of being multiple or various. The artists in this exhibition do not work with the quantitative notion of the word but rather examine the multiple uses of materials and their transformative quality to take on a range of meanings and functions. Whether they are found objects, recycled trash or simple materials utilized in daily life, the artists challenge, re-use and re-invent them in the creation of sculptural pieces, paintings, installations and photographs that reveal their aesthetic qualities and reference the personal context in which they were made.

“Environmental Consciousness in Eco-Art”
In Conjunction with Earth Week

Mary Jo Aagerstoun is an “accidental environmentalist” whose expertise is in contemporary activist art and cultural production. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Maryland’s Art History and Archaeology Department and proceeded to found EcoArt South Florida, Inc. in 2007. Since then her work has facilitated large-scale, environmentally conscious architectural and sculptural installations around South Florida in order to make a difference within native ecology through art that also engages the community.

Aagerstoun will speak about the role that EcoArt can play in bringing attention to and fighting the causes of climate change as well as the need for artists to assist in presenting the world with warnings and solutions to major environmental issues. Her talk will also encompass the history of “Earth Art” and the connections between the 60’s based movement and EcoArt’s current and future projects.

Since EcoArt South Florida’s inception Aagerstoun has directed many collaborative endeavors. The organization’s work can be seen in Dreher Park, the LEED certified Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek and in Belle Glade and continues to expand as projects are currently in progress for each of South Florida’s 5 watersheds, each to be finished in 2015.

This event is free and open to the public.
Meet and greet with the artist will begin at 5:30pm with free refreshments.

Opening at Hardcore Art Contemporary Space

Alberto Vejarano, aka Chanoir, is a Colombian artist raised in France that became known for his graffiti and especially for the iconic cat that in the mid-nineties began to flood walls in different cities in Europe and Latin America. Chanoir studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Annette Messager, Christian Boltanski and Jean Michel Alberola and others. Among his most important exhibits is the one in the main hall of the Cartier Foundation in 2009.

“No hard feelings” questions the basis of unnecessary suffering and tyranny of power undisturbed. It is based on our experience as human beings, our fears, and emotions and how consciousness and society interferes and manipulates our reality. Beliefs are by definition alienating and to start to question is to start being not alienated, suffering is to accept that alienation.

In his works, the chains symbolize impotence and stuffed animals symbolize the carnal and mortal condition of man. The use of these popular characters allows the viewer to feel identified with the subject. By torturing these inanimate beings there comes an inquiry on human instinct and why they feel satisfaction when others are tortured, killed and humiliated. This desire to “revenge” is a recurring theme in humanity. Good and evil are relative but fundamental, as the symbol of yin and yang, which symbolizes the many dualities that make up our lives and govern the balance of life itself.

Who has the power, is the real question on torture. The opposition between victim and villain defines the notion of equality, an unusual equality, who has power and who has the truth? Both the victim and villain feed on each other’s energy without knowing if happiness is to be bound or loose. Fear is one of the most powerful forces in the world, we, as the knight of the Middle Ages, must separate ourselves from the fears that are not ours and if not, rejoice in our suffering, our compassion that defines us as human beings for anyone who has not suffered is not a man, not a human being. This is an invitation to fear only for our inevitable condition, for have wanted to be gods when we are nothing but animals.

Celebrating Women… Celebrating Art …. MANO Fine Art presents an encore reception for Faux Perfection, featuring the work of guest artist Toa Castellanos.

Faux Perfection is a multimedia exhibition which explores the concept and consequences of beauty as it is manifested by contemporary society. Castellanos employs the use of collage, drawing, painting, photography and installations both as technique and as a metaphor to bring a poignant focus to displaced values of beauty.

The event will take place during the Bird Road Art Walk.

About Toa Castellanos:
Toa Castellanos is passionate about many things, as an artist she channels her passion for life to explore issues that are consciously most pressing to her: women’s role in contemporary society, ecology, social justice and non-religious spirituality. In her search for expression Castellanos has mastered painting, collaging, print making, etching, monotypes, book art, and other mediums that allow her to articulate her fervor and concerns via several art forms.

Born in Cuba, raised and educated in the United States, with an MA in Art & Education from the University of Notre Dame, Toa Castellanos started her professional career as an artist in Latin America, where she worked with renowned Columbian artist Pedro Alcantara Herran, and established Cuadrante, a serigraph studio with Armando Martinez Berrio, Virginia Amaya, and Phanor Leon, and later worked with Fabio Daza and his group T-Graba until 2000 when she relocated to the USA. Since arriving to Miami, Castellanos has been actively involved in Miami’s growing art scene.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art participates in the Bird Road Art Walk, held on the third Saturday of each month.

The Award-Winning Spoken Soul Festival Celebrates SWAN Day Miami on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Showcasing and uniting female warriors armed with paint brushes, microphones, and camera lenses through advocacy and creativity.

Miami, FL (March 7, 2013) – Winner of Miami New Times’ “Best of Miami 2012” Best Place To Meet Intelligent Women, Spoken Soul Festival celebrates its 6th year by continuing to make a HER-storic impact on the arts community in South Florida.

Spoken Soul Festival is a three-day celebration of philanthropy, community, and women artists. For the 3rd year in a row and out of approximately 1000 SWAN Day events, Spoken Soul Festival’s SWAN Day Miami has been named by WomenArts one of the Top 5 Cities in the world that celebrates the international holiday SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now!). In addition, this not-for-profit festival has been awarded a total of $3000 in grant monies over the past 3 years by WomenArts.

“Each year we grow and many more women artists’ careers are launched. This can only mean we are doing something right, and our community wants it and needs it,” Deborah Magdalena, Founder and Director of SSF.

This year’s SWAN Day Miami festivities are on Saturday March 23, 2013 from 6pm – 10pm during SWAN Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 6. This FREE event will showcase twelve women artists inside the new buzz-worthy Gibson Miami Showroom at The Dorissa Bldg, 2751 North Miami Avenue. In addition, our presenting sponsor, DUCK Tape Wine, will award $100 dollars and a case of wine to one featured artist who best incorporates actual DUCK Tape in one of their showcased originals.

On-air radio personality, Chanel from 939 MIA and MEGA 949, will host the SWAN extravaganza. Between DUCK Tape Wine, Santos Sangria, smooth music by the featured DJ, outstanding visual and performance art by some of South Florida’s up and coming super star women artists, SWAN Day 2013 Miami will surely be another award-winning event.

Artist Reception and Exhibition. John Dowd’s “Florida Nocturne” is an exquisite series of 10 dreamlike oil-on-linen paintings of Miami’s ubiquitous one-story mid-twentieth century homes. Draped in Miami’s evocative, signature moonlight, these paintings take viewers on a voyeuristic journey to an imagined life behind the walls. Dowd’s work is a synthesis of his interest in light, place, and mood.

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

José Miguel Cabrera’s photographic series RELATIVity portrays interrelated fragments of real-life situations that operate on the level of a puzzle and invite the viewer to decipher a story. Using techniques associated with narrative cinema, he has collaborated with amateur actors to create multiple “tableaux vivants” that, taken together, tell a single story that represents a simultaneous moment across various captured viewpoints. Cabrera montages still images to provide the subtle arc to a silent narrative that weaves and explores the phenomenon within a viewer’s individual reality and secret history to, ultimately, yield an experience of unique personal meaning.

Cabrera holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication from the University of Miami with dual majors in art photography and motion picture production. In 1997, he moved to New York City and worked in production for filmmaking and network television. He then worked as a “wet darkroom” printer and electronic media artist in the photography industry. In late 2002, he returned to South Florida and has since focused his projects on writing and electronic media. This exhibition is part of his work toward his Masters in Fine Arts at UM.
