Bonita Springs Blues Festival 3/14/09

The third annual Bonita Blues Festival will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from noon – 8:00 p.m. at Riverside Park in downtown Bonita Springs, FL. The festival will feature top-notch blues music, and a wide variety of food and other vendors.

The bands scheduled to perform can all be described “headliners”. They include: Joey Gilmore, along with his band, who took 1st place honors in the 2006 International Blues Challenge band division. The 2006 International BLUES Challenge called them “…the best unsigned band on the planet”; Albert Castiglia, with his incendiary electric and slide guitar work and soulful vocals, has been nominated for a 2009 Blues Music Award for best song, “Bad Year Blues”; The Jony James Blues Band whose first Blue Wave CD, “In This World”, was released internationally and rose to number five album of the year in “The Detroit Metro Times”; Rastus Kain, who has been described as the finest electric slide guitarist in the state of Florida, if not the whole South, and is also an extremely gifted songwriter; and Tommy Lee Cook, Danny Shepard and the All Stars, known in southwest Florida as the best of the best, will feature their brand of Southern-tinged Chicago blues. In addition, the celebrity emcee for part of the festival will be television personality, Stacey Adams, of WINK-TV NEWS.

Proceeds of the Bonita Blues Festival will benefit the Bonita Springs Assistance Office. Since its founding in 1979, the Bonita Springs Assistance Office has been recognized as the primary social service agency in the area. Generous donations have enabled the assistance office to continue to provide to those in our community who are less fortunate. The Bonita Springs Assistance Office believes in providing a “hand up” and not a “hand out.” The assistance office extends the helping hand of assistance, shows clients who are able to work how to locate jobs and become productive members of the community, and specializes in working with elderly residents and families with young children. All donations remain in this area to benefit residents in crisis. Over the years, these emergency programs have helped thousands of residents get back on their feet.

Tickets to the festival are $10 per person in advance and $15.00 at the gate. For additional information and tickets, visit www.bonitablues.com or call (239) 947-0715.

Lombardi Properties Hosts Inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair

www.lifeisartfest.org

Miami, FL, January 27, 2009 – The Miami art scene is exploding. America’s largest art week recently passed, surrounding Art Basel Miami Beach, featuring dozens of art fairs and tens of thousands of art patrons. The monthly art walks all across Miami bustle with more and more people, where just a few years ago they were quiet. Art galleries are springing up all across the city. People travel from all over the world to discover what we already know: Miami, the Magic City, has a creative soul.

David Lombardi, head of Lombardi Properties has seen this phenomenon and made a bold move to support the bourgeoning art scene. Lombardi Properties will be the host sponsor for the inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair on March 7th at their 1926 Seminole Building property at 120 NW 25th Street in the fast growing Wynwood Arts District.

Life Is Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in Miami and the surrounding area. They are producing their first art fair developed to feature Miami and south Florida based artists. Future projects include regular arts events, as well as an arts incubator.

Co-founder James Echols said, “We have seen such a growth of gifted artists in Miami, yet there seems to be a lack of focus on our own locals.” The other fairs and galleries feature artists from all over the world, which is a wonderful thing. “But, we have such talent in our own back yard that we decided that there should be a fair with a Miami focus,” Echols said.

Echols and partner and co-founder, Annette Peikert, assembled a group of fellow Miami artists and art lovers to produce the event.

R. E. Sanchez, working Miami artist and art educator, is the Artistic Director. His ties to the artist community and his knowledge of art promise to bring excellent work to the fair.

Talmage Thornhill was chosen as the Marketing Director for her long experience in the entertainment and nightlife business. She also brings a degree in the fine art of ballet, which informs her artistic sensibilities.

Susan J. Lewis brings her many years as a musician, DJ, and producer to her position as Music Director. She is also heading up the environmental aspect of the event, with her five years of professional work in environmental conservation. She is currently director of an environmental education center in Miami, is an active member of various environmental organizations, and holds a graduate degree in environmental education, management and conservation.

Financial Director Adriana De Welde has many years experience as a financial analyst and is a lifelong art lover, as well as an amateur filmmaker. Her keen business sense provides a stable base from which to build an efficient organization.

Co-founders Annette Peikert and James Echols have been involved in event production for years, having produced their own events, as well as working with numerous others. They are long time art lovers, having collected since they were in college.

Artists interested in participating should contact the organization through the website, www.lifeisartfest.org.

Yoshiaki Yuki
Yoshiaki Yuki began his career at the age of 20, exhibiting his works in his native Japan and overseas. Yuki’s work fuses modern art, representational images and abstract paintings into one single vision. Later he began exploring a unique calligraphic art he has named Ji-Sho-Ji-Ga, based on his vision of both Chinese and Japanese characters utilized more as images and symbols than an alphabet. Instead of writing, he paints the ancient hieroglyphic characters, gathering inspiration not from their meaning alone, but from their shape and form.
Yuki’s art extends to a great variety of canvases, including fabric, paper, wood, ceramics, glass and iron. These materials are fashioned into various works that include pictorial art known as Kakejiku (hanging scrolls), Byoobu (folding screens), lamps, furniture, tableware, and other decorative items.
Jun-ichi Arai|
Jun-ichi Arai was born in Kiryu, Japan, a city having over a one thousand year history as a center for textile manufacturing. His work held in permanent collections at Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art – New York, Museum of Arts and Design, Bolose Textile History Museum, Carnegie Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Museum, Dallas Museum, Gangoji, Kiryu Art Culture Center, Okawa Museum, Philadelphia Museum, Power House Museum, Saint Louise Museum, Yetepori Museum, among others.
Because of his outstanding gift as textile creator, Arai was named Honorable Royal Designer for Industry by the British Royal Academy of Arts and received the Textile Design Medal by the Textile Institute (International Textile Academy).

Arai’s innovative fabrics have caught the imagination of global fashion designers, collaborating with Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, Kansai Yamamoto, and Comme des Garçons.

Having acquired the highest honors and awards, he was the first to pioneer Jacquard machines and computers, blending tie-dye manual skills with new technology.

Art fair looking for a home

Anybody want to host an art fair? Who knew it was going to be so hard to just find a venue to hold a little art show at? Certainly not I! Dozens of calls later, it is getting ridiculous. Either the place is unavailable, or they don’t do that kind of thing, or they would be happy to host it but want to charge an arm and a leg. But, mainly, people just don’t answer the freaking phone.

Well, the search goes on. I’m sure something will show up soon, then we’ll be rolling.

Yes, that is correct, Soul of Miami is producing an art fair, with the help of several very good people, of course. For more information, please check out Life Is Art. There really is not much information there, yet, but we will be updating as we go along.

If you have a venue or know of a venue that would be a good potential, please contact us. We are looking for a space around 2000 square feet. If you are an artist interested in showing, definitely let us know.

Spam Allstars – An Electronic Descarga

Miami’s own DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique – an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see couples dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on. This is a sound that has been developed and influenced by all the cultures present in Miami, and the backgrounds of the individual members of the band.

The band performs 200+ shows per year across the US. They have released six CD’s to date, with the most recent – Introducing Spam Allstars (World Music Network/Ryko) – released globally in August of 2008. They were honored to have their Fuacata Live (Spamusica Records) recording nominated for a Latin Grammy.

Performing today are Andrew Yeomanson/DJ Le Spam (turntables & samplers), Jose Elias (guitar), Tomas Diaz (timbales, vox), AJ Hill (saxes, vox), Chad Bernstein (trombone, vox) and Ted Zimmerman (trumpet). Frost Music School graduates that play with Spam Allstars include Chad Bernstein, guitarist Adam Zimmon, saxophonist Steve Welsh, and Ted Zimmeran. The band’s most recent video (Gallo Pinto) was also produced and directed by UM Film School graduate Miguel Ferrer.
