Ada Karmi-Melamede is one of the most accomplished architects in the world, yet her work remains largely unrecognized beyond architectural circles. In the 1970s, she moved to New York from Israel, following her husband’s rising career, and spent the next 15 years balancing academia, large-scale public projects, and motherhood. While teaching at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, she contributed to major urban initiatives, including a master plan for Con Edison, a study for mixed-use development along the proposed Second Avenue Subway, and a 1978 housing competition on Roosevelt Island—all while raising three young children.

But in the early 1980s, after being denied tenure at Columbia, Ada made a bold decision to leave New York and her family for the opportunity of a lifetime – the design of the new Supreme Court of Israel. While her career flourished, personal sacrifices mounted as she remained far from her family. Ada’s work gave physical form to some of Israel’s highest democratic ideals, shaping landmarks such as the Supreme Court Building, The Open University, the Israel Institute for Democracy, and Ben Gurion University, among many other civic institutions. Ada – My Mother the Architect, directed by Ada’s daughter, Yael Melamede, explores the profound tension between career and motherhood and a unique mother-daughter bond.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival spring edition, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, presents its in-person Closing Night Film – Four Mothers (Ireland/United Kingdom, 2024), a comedy about a shy, commitment-phobic gay novelist living with his elderly mother. The film screens at 6 p.m. on April 27 at Savor Cinema (503 SE 6th St. in Fort Lauderdale).

Four Mothers follows Edward, a burgeoning novelist whose debut young adult novel about queer romance gains unexpected popularity in the U.S. While preparing for a promotional book tour, Edward is also the primary caregiver for his 81-year-old mother, Alma, who is wheelchair-bound following a stroke. When his friends decide to attend a Pride event, they leave their own mothers in Edward’s care, resulting in a weekend filled with challenges as he manages four strong-willed, elderly women. The film explores themes of familial duty, personal ambition, and the complexities of caregiving. It vacillates between all too familiar moments of sadness as well as uproarious laughter.

The film runs 89 minutes.

An afterparty with light bites and an open bar featuring performances by Jasmine Pryce Lords and beats by DJ Erik Lords will follow at Savor Cinema Patio.

The Penguin Lessons is a 2024 comedy-drama film directed by Peter Cattaneo based on the 2015 memoir by Tom Michell, a British teacher who taught at a boys’ boarding school in Argentina in the 1970s. While there, he rescued a penguin which he found soaked with oil on a beach in the Uruguayan resort of Punta del Este. He saved the penguin which then kept following him and so he took it back to the school, where it became a popular pet.

Adapted by Jeff Pope from Tom Michell’s memoir, the film stars Steve Coogan as Michell and Jonathan Pryce as the headmaster of the school. The film was shot in Spain in 2023. It premiered as a gala presentation at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

Hot Milk explores the complex bond between a single mother and her daughter against the sun-drenched backdrop of Almería. Rose (Fiona Shaw) and Sofia (Emma Mackey) travel to the Spanish seaside to seek a cure from Dr. Gómez for Rose’s mysterious illness, which has left her in a wheelchair. In this sultry town, Sofia, long trapped by her mother’s condition, is drawn to the enigmatic and free-spirited Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), awakening newfound freedom. As Sofia pulls away, Rose’s control tightens, and simmering resentments rise. In a not-so-distant future, where resources are scarce and tightly controlled, even the dream of having a child is not a given.

A baby is no longer a decision—it’s a privilege. Couples who want to be parents must pass a shadowy and mysterious test to prove they’re worthy. Children, in this world, are a double-edged sword – a heavy responsibility, but also a rare luxury that only the most ‘deserving’ can experience.

Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) are one of the few couples allowed to take the test, having successfully navigated a brutal selection process. Now, as they brace for the assessment that will decide their future, “lucky” is the last thing they feel. Desperate to prove themselves eligible, they face their evaluator, Virginia (Alicia Vikander)—cold, unpredictable, and impossible to read.

For seven grueling days, she subjects them to a surreal sequence of challenges that will push them to the brink, making them question not only themselves, but the basis of the test itself. Virginia’s trials dig far deeper than just the physical, pushing Mia and Aaryan to face their deepest insecurities, shaking the foundations of their relationship, and what being parents really means to them. Killian Maddox is a young grocery store worker obsessed with bodybuilding. His dream to be the best in bodybuilding creates negative behavior. Killian has emotional outbreaks and he can’t express his true emotions. As he prepares for a show, he attempts to ask out his love interest at the grocery store where he works. In fact, he asks her out while he’s shopping, only to walk out awkwardly. He is also obsessed with fitness champion Brad who does not reply to Killian’s written letters. In his written letters, Killian talks about his goal and admiration for Brad. Killian also includes his phone number, hoping Brad would call.

Eventually, Brad calls when he has a local show where Killian meets him on a photoshoot. Killian also takes out his love interest where he makes a fool of himself. His date leaves him at the restaurant. He’s distraught as he focuses on his next fitness show. He also assaults the local painting store because the owner would not repaint his grandfather’s house. He eventually drives to the local paint shop and destroys it. The local painter owner’s nephew and friends assault him.

He’s badly beaten prior to his next show. After his beating, he drives to the show where eyewitness ask if he’s OK. He steps on stage, only to pass out. He wakes up in a bathtub, icing his body. His therapist/parole officer consults him in what he will do. He’s clueless as he does not express his true feelings. His true feelings are dark and violent. He fantasizes about killing Brad. His desire to kill him is based upon Brad’s indifferent attitude.

Killian drives home from Brad’s show as he goes home. He throws out his steroids, bodybuilding pictures, and starts flexing in his garage.
