MegaRumba to Support Those in Need of Food and Medicine in Venezuela

SWARM and iHeart’s TU 94.9 have once again partnered to bring MegaRumba to Wynwood. This year, they will be raising funds in support of the Cuatro Por Venezuela Foundation, which has been fighting hunger, illness, and poverty in Venezuela since 2016. Taking place on the 20th of July, this festival of independence for all Hispanic cultures welcomes everyone to join in this single collective celebration, being a source of mutual pride and unity, and allowing everyone to enjoy a variety of Latin music, flavors, dancing, arts and crafts.

For the first time ever in the U.S., Danny Ocean will perform “Me Rehuso” at MegaRumba. Also performing live is Sofia Reyes, winner of an MTV Millennial, Latin Grammy and iHeart Media Award, as well as Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated bilingual Latin band, Locos Por Juana. Venezuelan singer/actor Victor Drijo and Nicole Favre will also join iHeart radio’s ever-popular DJ’s on center stage. In addition, there will be food trucks, arts & craft vendors, and several fully stocked bars, offering everything from the best of Bud Light and mixed drinks to specialty flavored mojitos by Cruzan.

The festival will run from 7PM to 3AM and it will continue to be FREE to enjoy. With the purchase of a $10 donation ticket, people can help Venezuela, but also enjoy a free Bud Light and shot from the giant Aguardiente Ice Luge ($19 value). Cuatro Por Venezuela Foundation will receive 100% of that ticket, so they may continue to provide educational, medical, and nutritional aid to Venezuelans in need. “Venezuela is under a profound humanitarian crisis, and we want to do something about it. One of the great things about Miami is our ethnic unity and getting to witness the neighborly love as the melting pot of Latin cultures come together in times of need. We are eager to help in this time of desperation in Venezuela and are excited to contribute towards uniting others in helping as well,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO. On June 30, Schnebly Redlands Winery will release the Lychee fruits of their labor in a most entertaining way during their Lychee Summer Celebration (LSC), partnering for the first time with the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society. The family friendly event has been a source of pride to the area, with South Florida being the only place in the Continental United States where the Lychee fruit is grown. The celebration will begin at 2pm, when the Farmer’s Market opens with 50 vendors and six food trucks. At the Grand Tiki Culinary Lounge, guests will expand their food knowledge and watch Cooking Demos on how to incorporate lychee, local and organic foods in the kitchen. A family Mud Run, an awards ceremony, and live music will round out the celebration only to culminate with a patriotic fireworks display.

“This year’s Lychee harvest is the largest crop we’ve seen in years, not only did the trees survive Hurricane Irma, but the crop was actually improved by the stress of Irma; it’s a testament to the strength of the South Florida community and its agricultural roots,” says Peter Schnebly, Founder of Schnebly Winery. During the Summer Celebration, the Winery will be offering three Lychee wines, and three limited special release Lychee beers from Miami Brewing Company. Several South Florida restaurants and food trucks will offer their culinary take on the Lychee fruit by way of creative recipes, such as Lychee Seafood Ceviche and Lychee Martini Ice Cream. The possibilities are endless, and Schnebly can’t wait to see their partners get creative with this year’s harvest at the Culinary Grand Tiki Lounge featuring StartUP FIU Food Mentors such as Half Moon Empanadas, Pro Kitchen Hub, My Ceviche, and Lulu’s Ice Cream, to name a few.

While guests enjoy the different variations of Lychee, they can also browse 200+ classic/modern Chevrolet Corvettes, custom cars, Jeeps, 4x4s and other classics throughout the day. The Lychee Summer Celebration Meet Up will be hosted by Corvettes & Coffee and Cecil’s Jeep Fam. Guests can also explore over 40+ artisan and craft vendors in the Artist Colony as they sculpt, sew and sand down hand-made goods. In addition, Live Painting Sessions will showcase some of the area’s best muralists using 40 ft. long shipping containers as their canvas.

At 5pm, the first Schnebly Family Mud Run will kick off, benefitting the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research. Participating runners will be given a glow necklace to display the Cancer they’ll be running for, while conquering an “all new” course compete with obstacles. While the five-kilometer course will honor the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners during an official ceremony before the fireworks, every runner will receive a medal to commemorate their run. All proceeds from the run will go to the American Cancer Society, and anyone who buys a ticket for the run will get free admission to the Lychee Summer Celebration; family members get special pricing on LSC tickets with Runner Registration.

Surfside’s tourism bureau brings back the much-anticipated First Fridays beach picnic series with a Summer of Love themed picnic. Peace, love, and happiness abound… it’s time for a perfectly peaceful beach party! Guests are encouraged to rock their favorite tie-dye T-shirts and bell-bottom jeans, sing along to imagine all the people, put flowers in their hair and make daisy chains — everyone is going retro during this groovy beach picnic. First Fridays Summer of Love will feature everyone’s favorite eco-friendly food brands, conservation awareness activities, and a beach cleanup contest for the children. Beach-goers can also enjoy mini-massages courtesy of the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort. Summer of Love Beach Picnic is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on June 1, 2018 directly on the beach behind Surfside’s oceanfront Community Center, located at 9301 Collins Avenue. It is free and open to the public.

This is the first of a series of four events, which will be held every first Friday of the month, from June through September. Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. Whether you’re craving backyard barbecue spare ribs, a southern brisket or a mouthwatering pulled pork sandwich, Grillin N Chillin has compiled 40-50 BBQ vendors from around town offering everything from Memphis style barbecue to Brazilian churrasco. SWARM, the creators of this festival, will set up a Miami Rescue Mission tent, so that people can sponsor a meal for a hungry person. In addition, it will be “going green” by partnering with Debris Free Oceans to become a zero-waste event. “To date, no other event in South Florida has taken this into consideration, so we’re excited to have proper sorting, composting and recycling stations in addition to other green efforts,” says Tony Albelo, CEO at SWARM.

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company is on a roll this year as they get ready to
release another brew. Cleverly named Tropical Bay IPA, the blend is a hazy Northeast
style India Pale Ale with medium bitterness and big tropical fruit aromas such as
pineapple from a mixed dry hop of Hüll Melon, Mandarina Bavaria, and Mosaic hops. It
contains a 6.5% ABV and an IBU of 54. Get your Hawaiian shirts ready because the
brewery will be having a special release party for this brew on March 3 rd with a live

As part of the Living Together Performance Series, The Maggic Banquet, a participatory food-performance by the internationally acclaimed Miami and Barcelona-based artist Antoni Miralda, will celebrate our city’s diverse cultural heritage by tracing the culinary history of Maggi, the ubiquitous and universal seasoning brand. Presenting dishes from the kitchens of Miami’s various ethnic groups—all made with Maggi—in an altar-like buffet, Miralda explores the commodification and globalization of food and tradition. Accompanied by music, a special beverage, and a zine published with recipes in English, Spanish, and Creole, The Maggic Banquet will turn the terrace of EXILE Books into a food-for-thought artwork.
Born in Terrassa in the province of Barcelona, Spain, Antoni Miralda has been using food as his art medium since the late 1960s. He often creates public and ritual events centered in popular culture and traditions, especially culinary ones. The Honeymoon Project (1986–92), was an international series of ceremonial and participatory actions at multiple sites that imagined the wedding of New York’s Statue of Liberty with the Columbus Monument in Barcelona, two diametrically opposite icons of freedom and conquest. Since 1971 Miralda has lived and worked in the U.S., and since 1993 has spent much of his time in New York and Miami, where he started FoodCultura, a project that includes archives and collections, and that produces exhibitions and events around the world which explore the subjects of food diversity and its relation to culture. He was the subject of major retrospectives at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid in 2010 and the MACBA in Barcelona in 2016.

The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation recently completed its XIII Annual Wine and Food fund raiser on Friday, January 26th. The event sold out quickly and turned into another resounding success with the help and support from the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne, The Nobis Foundation, The ARC of South Florida, our long standing partner Manos del Sur and community members at large.

Thirteen participating restaurants from our community prepared food delicacies to match the wines. Twenty four wineries competed for the recognition of Best in Show White and Red.

According to five independent judges, the winning white wine was B de Chanzy, a Rose from Provence, France, a delightful blend of Grenache and Syrah.

The winning red wine was a Merlot from Deerfield Ranch in Sonoma Valley, CA.

What better way to kick off Stone Crab Season than to enjoy it by the sea at the iconic Miami Marine Stadium with seafood vendors, live Caribbean beats, a family fun zone, mojito bars, and more! The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival is a waterfront celebration of all things seafood. With proceeds going towards Celebration of the Sea Foundation, the two-day event will offer South Florida the chance to savor some of the freshest seafood all-day-long with over 25 gourmet seafood partners. Other fun features of the festival include The Shipwreck Bar & Lounge, which will be jammin’ with live acoustic music, crafted cocktails and plenty of lounge seating. The Celebration of The Sea Kids’ Discovery Zone will offer inflatable slides, games, free activities, face painting and a scuba-diving tank with professional instructors. In addition, the festival’s official charity partner will have a wide variety of hands-on environmental and educational exhibits along with exciting games and activities for all. The Kitchen Lab will offer some delicious demonstrations with local and celebrity chefs. On Saturday, there will be a “Clam Chowder Contest” with two seafood enthusiasts who go head-to-head for a cash prize. Also on Saturday, Phuc Yea, Poke 305, and Andy Bates, who is known for his hearty street food will all conduct a cooking demo. Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. Surfside, Miami’s uptown beachtown, is bringing a slice of the Caribbean to locals at the next First Fridays event to be held on Friday, June 2. During this family-friendly beach picnic, locals can kickoff the weekend with a visit to Surfside’s pristine beach for a number of fun activities. Enjoy a tepee village, an interactive drum circle, a Bahamian Junkanoo marching band and a fashion showcase from Miami-based boutique BASK and designer Sonia Trussardi Sepe. Locals also can nosh on fresh ceviche and quench their thirst with coconut water courtesy of Harmless Harvest – all while basking in ocean breezes and listening to Caribbean steel drum music.

The Caribbean-themed Beach Picnic is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on June 2, 2017 at the Oceanfront Community Center, located at 9301 Harding. First Fridays is free and open to the public. The public can RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/FridayBeaching/.

Wynwood will see the streets come alive for the fourth annual Wynwood Life! It is held in Miami’s Art and Cultural District and is a true celebration of all things we love about South Florida – Food, Art, Music and Fashion! The Spot Barbershop will have a pop up for the men, and stylists will showcase multiple fashion shows by local boutiques, fashion bloggers including iShine365, Dyme Lyfe, graciouslylovedllc, Koko and Palenki, to name a few.

The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The 12th Annual Rotary Key Biscayne Wine and Food Fest was held this past Friday at Fairways on the Key.

Thirteen different wines from the New World competed against the same varietals from the Old World to earn the recognition of “Best of Show” in each class. A lovely Italian Prosecco greeted all the patrons upon their arrival in order to “season the palate” for the wonderful wines to follow.

Shari Gherman, president of the American Fine Wine Competition & Charity Wine Gala, served as wine director. Four other noted wine professionals, Patrick Sullivan, wine educator; Wendy Rosano, Sommelier and wine director at Terra Fiamma in Delray Beach; Roberto Colombi, Sommelier and GM of The Blue in the Boca Raton Resort, and Henry Barrow, Wine Educator, completed the professional Judging panel.

The evening’s proceeds went to benefit the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation (RCKBF) and affiliated charities for adults and children.

The Rotary Club continues to collaborate with the Arc of South Florida, a Miami-based non-profit helping adults and children with mental disabilities.  Their members organized the details of the evening and received part of the proceeds to fund its programming.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation has designated proceeds to benefit Fundacion Manos del Sur’s educational work with programs to promote healthcare and disease prevention offered through Fundación Stamboulian and the Rotary Club in Argentina.

Rather than each organization holding an independent fund raising event, The Arc of South Florida and Fundación Manos Del Sur worked together with Rotary to offer attendees not only a wonderful evening, but an opportunity to support different efforts in our community. The Rotary Club is pursuing matching grants from the local Rotary District and Rotary International to further leverage the charitable impact of this event.

Concrete Beach is taking the party to the streets as they shut down 24th Street between NW 5th and NW 2nd for an old fashioned block party to celebrate the launch of Deck the Walls, the brewery’s newest limited beer. The event will feature local food trucks, performances by Electric Kif and Afrobeta, a live painting competition by talented artists from BakeHouse Art Complex, a Wynwood-based non-profit art incubator, and even an auction.
