This story spans 21 years and two continents.
On April 10, 1990, a belly dancer Tamalyn Dallal opened the Mid Eastern Dance Exchange, which was the only dance school in South Beach. It was her birthday. little did she know that that studio would spawn international dance stars who would tour the world; including Bellydance Superstars Amar Gamal and Bozenka, plus many more who opened bellydance schools around the globe. Ms. Dallal became well known too, and has left Miami Beach to travel the world teaching bellydance to women from China to Patagonia. One of the popular yearly events, which took place from 1994 to 2007, was an outdoor bellydance festival on Lincoln Road called “Orientalia”. otientalia has also gone global and been produced in Argentina and Hong Kong.

Tamalyn Dallal is also a writer and burgeoning film maker. In the most recent of her three books, entitled “40 Days and 1001 Nights” she traveled to five Muslim countries and lived in each one for forty days. One of the places she lived in was Zanzibar, an island of the coast of mainland Tanzania (East Africa). On this beautiful island she found thousands of heroin addicts. Unbeknownst to her, the young man who was helping her find her way was also an addict.

There were no rehab programs in the entire region. Most people thought that recovery was impossible and that many from this generation were lost forever. But this young man went to a recovery program in Kenya, then came home to Zanzibar and opened his own program. He now has five recovery houses and a sixth on the way. He has helped hundreds of addicts find hope and sobriety.

In July, 2011, fourteen bellydancers from around the world will go to Zanzibar to take a dance workshop and cultural tour with Tamalyn Dallal and her famous protoge, Bozenka. During this time, Tamalyn Dallal and friends will present the Orientalia Festival in a historic Arab fort in Zanzibar. This festival will benefit the drug rehabilitation homes and people will be able to come and learn how their sons can also recover from addiction. It is a festival of hope.

The studio party/performance, on April 10th in Miami Beach will feature 20 bellydancers, including Tamalyn Dallal. Funds raised will go toward producing the Orientalia festival in Zanzibar…Dancing to help Zanzibar become drug free.

The Manic Monday special is available for dine in orders only, and it is offered at
RA Sushi in South Miami
5829 SW 73rd Street
Miami, FL. 305.341.0092

Tax season is here, which means the dreaded day is looming. This year, the tax return deadline has been extended to Monday, April 18, adding stress to an already loathed day of the week. To give Miami-Dade residents incentive for getting their taxes done early or providing a little relief for those who procrastinated, RA Sushi in South Miami has created a “Manic Monday” special, extending its Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to close on April 18.

Keeping a little money in their pockets, on tax day guests can choose from more than 35 sushi, appetizer, and tapas selections, plus more than 30 beer, wine and signature cocktails ranging from $2 to $7. RA Sushi in South Miami’s Happy Hour typically runs from 3 to 7 p.m., but on this specific day Happy Hour specials will be offered from 3 p.m. until close.

Updated earlier this year, the Happy Hour menu has been expanded to include new menu items, plus a variety of RA’s most popular dishes. Now included in the selections are new tapas menu items: Garlic Sugar Snap Peas and Shishito Peppers. Cocktails that were recently added to the menu are also being offered, such as the Dragon Bite (Bacardi Dragonberry, strawberry puree, fresh lemon juice, yuzu & a splash of soda make for an exotic blend bursting with fresh berry), Samurai Cowboy (Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Aperol, yuzu sour, lemon juice & ginger ale create a powerfully exotic cocktail with a mellow bourbon kick), and Red Lotus (Absolut Ruby Red vodka, X-Rated, pink grapefruit & other fresh juices – sweet, tart & tasty). Included in the Happy Hour roundup are favorite dishes: Squid Salad, Seaweed Salad, Crispy Spicy Tuna (spicy tuna mix served on top of crispy sesame rice balls; drizzled with a soy chili sauce), RA Tapas (Sweet Onion Salmon, Garlic Citrus Yellowtail, Crispy Onion Albacore, Salmon Carpaccio, Seared Tuna), Spicy Sesame Chicken Wings (glazed chicken wings with a sweet & spicy sesame sauce), and Tuna Tataki (thinly sliced, seared ahi tuna; served with an onion soy vinaigrette).

Spanish River Church will be donating playground equipment and furniture that they gained through fundraisers to the Broward Outreach Pompano Center.

Spanish River Church Homeless Ministry is a mission devoted to serving the poor and needy in our community. Beginning in 2006, a group of volunteers from Spanish River Church has donated their time and efforts to ease the plight of homelessness in South Florida through their efforts with the Broward Outreach Pompano Center, working directly with the homeless families served by the center.

Since 1922 the Miami Rescue Mission (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) Centers have served the homeless and needy men, women, and children of Miami. Every day the organization provides food, shelter, clothing, education, job training, spiritual direction and long-term rehabilitation programs in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano to nearly 1,000 homeless on a daily basis. The mission also has at-risk after-school and summer day camp youth programs. The Miami Rescue Mission started reaching out to the homeless in Broward County in 1992 and in 1997 the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood was opened. Then in 2002 the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach was opened to serve the homeless in the north end of Broward.

Upcoming exhibit Arrived by M-Lon 4/9/11

April 9, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW. 24th St
Miami, FL 33127
Casual. Wine, cheese & crackers.

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show “Arrived” by emerging Venezuelan artist, painter and illustrator M-Lon (Miguel Gonzalez) on April 9, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127, starting at 7:00pm.

“Arrived” gathers 18 photographs intervened with digital illustrations (mixed media), where the artist combines photography with the use of a WACOM digital pen, thus giving life to fascinating images that equally share the participation of both reality and fantasy.

This series is born by the need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit of imaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenes of urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, but nevertheless where they try to find their own space.

By penetrating into an unknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocent frolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothing more than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them into personifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity; emotions we can somehow relate to.

These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious but always naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation to discover, imagine and reconsider the world that surround us.

“Arrived” reflects on M-Lon’s idea that when we truly come close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise moment when we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.

Grammy-winning artist Melky Jean (Wyclef Jean’s sister) and The Bryan Brothers performed along with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter James Slater and Brian Lynch, husband of Kim Clijsters.

The event was held at the famed 15th floor pool deck of Icon Brickell, the highest-profile building in Miami continuously recognized for breaking sales records thanks to Fortune International. A gifting suite for professional tennis players and celebrities in Café Icon featured items from Sony Ericsson, Trini in Private, Molly Dooker wines and more.

Book People is a series of visual stories created by self-taught artist and library advocate Eduardo Hernandez. In celebration of the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s 40th anniversary, Hernandez’s oil paintings portray real life people making use of the library. The narrative behind Hernandez’s insightful paintings can either be “tragic, humorous, or joyous” and though each is accompanied with a brief story, the artist encourages the viewer to approach each work with a fresh perspective by composing larger stories and originating variant themes that each individual can interpret on their own.
The Book People series was done during a summer spent doing supervised fieldwork and volunteering at a branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System.

About the artist:
Eduardo Hernandez is a lifelong resident of Miami. He is an educator and a local self-taught artist interested in exploring social issues. His work has been shown at Miami Dade College and at the Hortt Memorial Competition, Museum of Art of Fort Lauderdale. Hernandez received his B.A. in History and his M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University (FIU); a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida, and is currently working on a doctorate in Education at FIU. While Hernandez continues to experiment with various other types of art, his recent focus has primarily been in drawing and figurative painting.

Benefiting the Research & Support of Programs Associated with Brain Cancer
Special Performances by The Beach Boys, Gloria Gaynor, Lou Gramm and The Osmond Bothers

On Thursday, April 14th at The Fillmore Miami Beach at The Jackie Gleason Theatre guests will gather together to raise money to benefit Voices Against Brain Cancer. Voice Against Brain Cancer is a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease. The foundation’s first event in South Florida, “Sounding Off For a Cure” is the vision of Founder, Mario Lichtenstein, and his family after they lost their son and brother, Gary Lichtenstein, after his battle with brain cancer that sadly took his life in 2003 within the first year of his diagnosis at the young age of 24.

“We’ve lost great minds to brain cancer. Use yours to help us find the cure today.” – Mario Lichtenstein, Founder of Voices Against Brain Cancer.

The star-studded benefit will feature performances by artists whose lives have all been effected by brain cancer including The Beach Boys (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees), Gloria Gaynor (Grammy Award Winning Artist), Lou Gramm (Singer & Songwriter & former ‘Foreigner’ lead vocalist), and The Osmond Bothers (People’s Choice Award Honorees). All of the evening’s performances will be accompanied by the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. Additionally, performers will make a special tribute to George Harrison, Celia Cruz, Bob Marley and Nara Leão, all of whom have lost the battle to brain cancer. Guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a live and silent auction followed by an unforgettable performance.

Additional event components will include a ceremony for the 2011 VABC Courage Awards which is presented to select individuals who have demonstrated tremendous courage in their fight against brain cancer. Other award recipients will include Joseph D. Rosenblatt, M.D. (Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center University of Miami’s Interim Director), Pedro Martinez (Former Major League Baseball All Star), Jorge Plasencia (Chairman and CEO of República) and Jesse Stoll (son of the founder of Fantasma Productions).

Voices Against Brain Cancer is a non-for-profit public charity/ one hundred percent of the ticket sales and auction proceeds will support innovative research and programs for brain cancer.

Our mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

Voices Against Brain Cancer was started in memory of Gary Lichtenstein who lost his valiant battle with brain cancer on October 1, 2003. Gary was living in Chicago and working as an options trader at Wolverine Trading when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March of 2003. He was 24 years old at the time. After three months of radiation, Gary slipped into a coma from which he did not recover.

Over the past 30 years, very little progress has been made to treat brain tumors. Only with cutting-edge scientific research and funding of clinical trials will we be able to effectively fight this disease. Voices Against Brain Cancer will promote and support this type of research within the medical community by working with those doctors that are committed to curing and treating brain tumors. In addition, the foundation continually works to fund support groups for patients and caregivers.

At this time, brain tumor research is underfunded and the public remains unaware of the magnitude of this disease. The cure rate for most brain tumors is significantly lower than it is for many other types of cancers. Our Foundation is driven by these facts and committed to finding a cure. It is the goal of our Foundation and its supporters to fund the research that will directly impact those affected with brain tumors. Nathlie Provosty
Green(ish) Hermeticism
April 8th – May 7th, 2011

Crossroads are both forbidden yet inevitable, the dangerous but profitable locus of transactions for the journeyman or merchant, a place often haunted, often sacred. Hermes, from whom the term Hermeticism is derived, controls crossroads; he is the god of communication and its opposite, silence, similarly commerce and burglary. A green Hermes, however, is nature speechless, nature crossed with commerce. As is well evident, this relationship has gone awry. It is as if the senses of man have been dissolved, because we understand very little, or nothing at all, of the living organism, namely in respect to ecology and ourselves. Green Hermetics are those who recognize life in the undercurrents (even if only in slivers), and therefore rise to challenge all forms of consciousness enslavement, to liberate the image from the machinations of mass production and the manipulations of political rhetoric. A Green Hermeticist understands that nothing is ever exactly as it seems, believes in the poetics and alchemy of ambivalence, and consequently always remains tempted to explore fuller possibilities of understanding man’s constructive and destructive impulses. By submitting to the total mystery of the materials–those means by which one communicates with, to, and through–the union of men and nature is at least obtainable in a work of art.

The paintings and drawings in this exhibition derive from sources as diverse as Giordano Bruno’s Classical and Renaissance memory techniques to specific lines from César Vallejo and William Carlos Williams poems. This exhibition will be Nathlie’s debut solo exhibition as well as her first time exhibiting in Miami, Florida.

Nathlie will be in residence at the de la Cruz collection. For information about the residency and other visiting artists please visit delacruzcollection.org.

New World Waking Inspired by John Lennon’s Piano 4/10/11

Insignia Presents New World Waking!
A musical journey for peace, inspired by John Lennon’s piano
Sunday, April 10, 4 pm
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
2750 McFarlane Road
Coconut Grove.
Tickets are $15 and are available on the website or at the event.

Insignia, the vocal ensemble of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, will present New World Waking! comprised of songs composed by Steve Schalchlin, inspired when he played the piano on which John Lennon’s created Imagine. The concert takes place on Sunday, April 10th at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove

Imagine. All the people living in peace….No more bullying, gay bashing, self-hatred, transphobia or violence.

It is with this vision that Steve Schalchlin was inspired to create New World Waking.

“New World Waking came together in my mind on the day I was selected by pop star George Michael (and his partner, art gallery owner Kenny Goss) to play John Lennon’s Imagine Piano in the front yard of a house in Olympia, Washington as part of a photographic project,” states Schalchlin on his website. The piano was being taken to places where acts of violence occurred…including the kitchen of Alec and Gabi Clayton, where their son, Bill, had taken his life after a gay bashing.”

“I put my hands where John Lennon’s hands once were, the instrument whose sound inspired the song ‘Imagine’, and I knew in that moment what New World Waking was meant to be: A journey to find a simple song of peace.”

Steve Schalchlin is best known for writing the music and lyrics to two critically-acclaimed, award-winning off-Broadway pop gospel musicals The Last Session and The Big Voice: God or Merman?, written with his life partner of 23 years, playwright and actor, Jim Brochu.

He draws his musical influences from the small town gospel church music he grew up with in Arkansas, along with the Top 40 radio of the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, blues he learned on the Texas Gulf Coast, protest folk and, later in life, musical theater.

Under the artistic direction of Anthony Cabrera, Insignia’s concert reaffirms Schalchlin’s quest and conviction that music can be a vehicle that transcends all boundaries, be they political, religious, ethnic or simply borne out of indiscriminate hatred. It is a journey to find a song of perfect peace, a musical journey styled in pop, salsa, gospel and low down dirty blues. It reflects a desire to effect change, reminding us that we are not alone in our desire and ability to do so.

For further information about Steve Schachlin or New World Waking, visit http://www.newworldwaking.com/

Founded in 1999, Miami Gay Men’s Chorus is an all-inclusive, community-based organization of gay men and gay-supporting people that inspires and changes lives through the power of music. With humor and heart, they proudly entertain their audiences while striving for artistic excellence.

The vocal ensemble Insignia is comprised of singers auditioned from within Miami Gay Men’s Chorus. With a repertoire ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Insignia serves as a vehicle for outreach for Miami Gay Men’s Chorus.

The Workshop and Svedka Present New Work by Benjamin Hollingsworth 4/9/11

The Workshop & Svedka Present New Work by Benjamin Hollingsworth
April 9,8pm – 12am
171 NW 23rd St
Miami, FL 33127

The Workshop Presents: Works By Benjamin Hollingsworth
Sponsored By: Svedka Vodka

Take in complimentary vodka cocktails and the works of artist Ben Hollingsworth, professional soccer player turned multimedia artist, during April’s Art Walk.

Wynwood is the up and coming destination for the arts and the cultured. Such a specific area has been much needed in Miami, and over the last few years, Wynwood has finally earned its place as the pinnacle of the Miami art-world. The area’s monthly art walks are the culmination of the in-the-know locals and top-tier visitors. Having a presence at these events aligns brands with the most coveted people and happenings in the city.

This month, we are proud to have professional soccer player turned artist Benjamin Hollingsworth display his work in the heart of this art epicenter. As his first Miami appearance since 2010’s Art Basel, it’s an honor to have this up and coming visionary grace the Miami studio walls for April’s walk. Each Hollingsworth piece is distinctively unique, yet, with each one’s unrelentless use of color and subtle use of symbolism, the observer cannot help but to be captivated and moved.
In April, Benjamin will be exhibiting never before seen works that vary from “huge 8 x 10ft drawings on sheets of paper” and then some smaller pieces “done on top of vintage LIFE magazine covers.” Showcased pieces will be available for purchase.

About Benjamin Hollingsworth:
Until three and a half years ago, Benjamin Hollingsworth was living out his childhood dream of being a professional soccer player. At 27, amidst the height of his sporting career, Hollingsworth suffered a serious foot injury, forcing him to reconsider his life’s path.

As a release from his frustrations, he turned to art. Immersing himself in art history books and taking a self-reflecting trip to Paris– all along gallivanting galleries and museums, he found himself entirely consumed by art.

Moving to NYC on a limb, Hollingsworth further integrated himself into the art world – working in a studio by day and delving deeply into his creativity by night. However, it was not until his stepfather was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 that, ironically, he got his big break.

Compelled to leave it all, Hollingsworth returned to Charleston to support his step-father – all the while, never giving up on his new passion.

“I lived in empty building in the middle of downtown Charleston and started producing new work for an idea I had to for a solo exhibit,” he says. In May, he took advantage of the empty space for the exhibition, which put him “on the map.”

“Since then things have taken off,” he says. ” Art saved me, and helped me get over a very, very tragic event in my life.”
As one of the more recognizable up and comers in the art scene, Hollingsworth was featured in the likes of Interview and Versus magazines and has been exhibited in some of the most renowned hotels and shows around the nation, including this past year’s Art Basel.

His works:
Hollingsworth works in a very mixed media format, from installations and photographs to large scale paintings. “I think allot of it is very raw in nature but there are always underlining themes and concepts,” he says. “I tend to do things in series.”

Some of Miami’s hottest restaurants have partnered with Team F.O.U.R Miami from the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Miami Group for an exclusive fundraiser to benefit Common Threads. Participating restaurants will donate 5% of their sales in an effort to raise enough funds for Common Threads to add a fifth local elementary school to their program. Participating restaurants include Hakkasan, Gotham Steak, Scarpetta (all located at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach,) Michy’s, Spartico at Mayfair Hotel & Spa, Chowdown Grill, Shula’s Steak House and Red, The Steakhouse.

Current Common Threads funding has allowed for four Miami-Dade County
schools to be a part of the program. Since the program is so successful in offering kids in low socio-economic areas access to nutritional and cooking education, Team F.O.U.R from The Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Miami Group and the five participating restaurants are raising funds in order to add a fifth school to the program. “I am so happy to have such amazing restaurants participating and supporting a cause that is so dear to me,” says Common Threads South Florida Chef and Founder Michelle Bernstein.

Fundraising efforts for Common Threads will conclude with a special event on Saturday, April 9 at Jungle Island called Kids Eat Miami (KEM). KEM involves local restaurateurs and chefs who are focused on healthy eating and offer healthy fare. Tickets are $25 each and will grant visitors full access to the park and Kids Eat Miami. Tickets purchased through Leadership Miami will be $10 off the Jungle Island adult ticket price. For more information and to purchase tickets to this event, please visit www.KidsEatMiami.com

About Common Threads: We teach low-income children to cook wholesome and affordable meals with the belief that through our hands-on cooking classes we can help prevent childhood obesity and reverse the trend of generations of non-cookers, while celebrating cultural differences and the things people all over the world have in common. Common Threads began out of our love of family and good food, two basic ingredients that link all people of this world together. Children who participate in the program arrive at the educational kitchens and embark on a world adventure as they prepare nutritious meals rooted in diverse cultural heritages. An Evening With Recipes Stolen From The Screen 4/11/11

A ‘Feast for All Senses’ – Laura Delli Colli, Italian Film Journalist Presents, “An Evening with Recipes ‘Stolen’ from the Screen”
Monday, April 11, 2011
Miami Beach Cinematheque
1130 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, 33139

Anyone who loves Italian film and food should not miss out on a spectacular event taking place during the 6th annual Sicilian Film Festival! Famous, Italian film journalist, Laura Delli Colli will present, “An Evening With Recipes ‘Stolen’ From The Screen” on Monday, April 11, 2011 at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, 33139. The film ‘feast’ will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a screening of selected scenes from famous Italian films, followed by feature film presentation of “Baaria” by award-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, and ending with a buffet dinner at Café Milano, 850 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach.

Film buffs will enjoy recalling scenes from Italian classics such as Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” Marco Ferreri’s “La Grande Bouffe,” and Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard.” In Delli Colli’s book “The Taste in 100 Recipes of Italian Cinema” (available in English at Amazon.com), she provides a recipe, a short synopsis of a film, and describes the food motif. Recipe 18 ‘Timballo di Maccheroni/Macaroni Timbale” is inspired by a famous scene from “The Leopard.” Delli Colli writes: “Prince Salina resorts to food to pinpoint the differences in life styles. The food to be enjoyed or to be extolled becomes an orgy of voluptuousness involving all five senses.” The dish which is macaroni with a meat sauce made of pork, chicken, and beef, plus aubergines and mozzarella, covered with a pastry and topped with béchamel sauce is depicted in a scene described by Delli Colli, “when the knife slits the crust, a smoke filled with flavors spurts out first, and then…”

In describing “La Grande Bouffe” with corresponding recipe ‘Rognoni trifolati/Fried Veal Kidneys’ Delli Colli writes: “the film is clearly a metaphor of squalor and an allegory of a society condemned to die of wealth. The gourmet menu is a real nightmare appeasing and killing at the same time the leading characters.” In the film the kidneys are prepared ‘Bordolese-style’ which is the French version of the Italian recipe provided in the book.

At the lecture, Delli Colli will also discuss Donatella Maiorca’s “The Sea Purple” to be screened at the SFF on Friday, April 8th and share recipes for Sicilian Swordfish, Sundried Tomatoes in Oil and Timbale Macaroni.

Following the lecture (at 7:45 p.m.) will be a screening of Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Baaria.” Tornatore became internationally famous after his “Cinema Paradiso” won Special Jury Prize at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award for the Best Foreign Film the same year. “Baaria” was the opening film at the 66th Venice International Film Festival and received a Golden Globe nomination. Baaria (Sicilian slang for Bagheria where Tornatore was born) is an epic saga of life and death, love and hatred in a vibrant Sicilian town in the first half of the twentieth century.

Finally, after discussing and watching food in film, guests are welcome join the SFF President, Emanuele Viscuso, Artistic Director, Salvo Bitonti, and the SFF team at Café Milano, 850 Ocean Drive on South Beach for a buffet dinner (to begin at approximately 10:30 p.m.) Tickets are $50.00 per person and proceeds will benefit next year’s Sicilian Film Festival. World’s most prestigious Beach Polo tournament graces the sands of South Beach for a fast and furious four-day showcase featuring Polo aficionado John Walsh of America’s Most Wanted

The Polo Life, LLC announces the seventh annual AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup presented by Nespresso, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo tournament, taking place from April 21st to April 24th between 20th and 22nd Streets on the sands of South Beach, featuring South Florida native, veteran Polo player and renowned presenter of America’s Most Wanted, John Walsh. AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz, returns for the second year as Title Sponsor and is displaying a stable of its own high performance vehicles alongside the well-trained thoroughbred horses.

The four-day, world class sporting event features top polo players from around the world competing in two tournaments for both men and women. The AMG South Beach Women’s Polo Cup Presented by Nespresso is the third annual ladies beach polo tournament, taking place on Thursday April 21st featuring eight women’s teams in a one-day series of round-robin championship matches. Mercedes-AMG is the proud sponsor of the AMG men’s and women’s polo teams that include some of the world’s top-ranked players. Top Brazilian model, Paula Chermont, will be competing for a second year, and the game’s number one female player, Sunny Hale, will play for the AMG women’s team.

The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is a three-day men’s tournament, now in its seventh year, starting on Friday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 24th, culminating in the highly acclaimed championship final at the end of the week. The six men’s teams will feature some of the world’s top-ranked players including the iconic Nacho Figueras, as well as Luis Escobar and the number one U.S player, Nic Roldan. Selected as part of the AMG Men’s Polo Team is John Walsh, presenter of America’s Most Wanted and spokesman for The National Foundation For Missing and Exploited Children – one of the participating charities at this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup. Walsh will be making his inaugural appearance at the AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup as a participating rider and AMG-Mercedes team member, alongside Tommy Biddle, who is currently the highest ranked Arena Polo player in the U.S. John Gobin, a five-time US polo team member will be playing with Lance Vetter and Gringo Colombres from Argentina.

“I am very excited to be part of this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup,” says Walsh. “As a long-time Polo enthusiast and player, I am very much looking forward to competing for the first time in this year’s tournament alongside some of the best players in the world. The event will help raise awareness for The National Foundation For Missing and Exploited Children and hopefully aid in our mission to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation. The Foundation continues to help with saving the lives of children for over 25 years.”

Attendees at this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup will experience a host of musical and visual entertainment, including fashion shows by La Martina and Blank Silk by Meghan Walsh, the talented daughter of John Walsh, along with live concert performances, VIP parties and public events throughout the tournament. For this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup, AMG-Mercedes has formed a unique partnership with designer La Martina for the creation of a special edition commemorative polo shirt for the tournament that will be on-sale at the La Martina retail tent over the four days. All proceeds from the sales of the polo shirt will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, the tournament’s official partnering charity organization, as well as a portion of funds raised from this year’s ticket sales.

“The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is not only a highlight of the social season, but a must-see event that is now a staple on the annual sporting calendar,” said Bruce Orosz, President and Co-Founder of The Polo Life, LLC. “The tournament has become a major attraction to general enthusiasts and Polo aficionados alike, who come to enjoy a sport steeped with tradition in a setting that is world-renowned, bringing considerable media attention through its appeal to the South Florida tourism industry.”

The traditional post-event awards ceremony will be held at the end of each tournament to commemorate both women’s and men’s competition winners, during which John Walsh, along with sponsor representatives from Mercedes-AMG and Nespresso, will present trophies to the men’s and women’s World Cup finalists.

The festival has been able to expand its reach beyond local South Florida artists by bringing in performers from African countries such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, and the Republic of Congo. This global connection through music has helped the festival evolve into one of Miami’s most culturally diverse events.

Iberia Announced Introduction of First Ever Direct Flight from Miami to Barcelona

Marking the airlines’ continuous growth and international presence in South Florida, IBERIA announced the first ever direct flight from Miami to Barcelona yesterday during an exclusive VIP inauguration ceremony at which top executives from Spain’s number one airline announced the new route from IBERIA, attended by Mayor Tomas Regalado, local dignitaries and the region’s top CEOs at The Mandarin Oriental hotel in downtown Miami.

The occasion was marked with a special Catalonian-themed evening of food and entertainment featuring some of Spain’s most acclaimed maestros of cuisine. Emmy Award-winning international journalist, anchor and author, Marian de la Fuente, welcomed attendees, after which speeches were given by Manuel López Aguilar, Executive VP Commercial and Clients of IBERIA and José María Alvarado, Country Manager for IBERIA USA and Canada.

One of Spain’s top master chefs and the Michelin Star award-winning founder of Fonda Gaig in Barcelona, Carles Gaig, created a series of his own aesthetically pleasing signature classic and contemporary Catalán dishes for attendees at the event.

The star of Antoni Bassas’ weekly programme on Catalunya Ràdio and Albert Om’s El Club programme on TV3 in Spain, internationally acclaimed Chef Nandu Jubany also demonstrated his excellence in Catalán cuisine.

Hailing as a graduate from the London Academy of Bartenders and from his Cocktail Academy in Lisbon, Portugese Master Bartender and Mixologist, Paulo Ramos, exhibited his acrobatic flair in the art of cocktail creation during the event.

Iberia now operates now three non-stop flights weekly to Barcelona on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Passengers coming from other U.S destinations, such as Dallas, Houston, Orlando and Tampa can connect to the new route via American Airlines. At Barcelona airport, travellers can link with Iberia Regional / Air Nostrum and Vueling flights to cities such as Bilbao, Majorca, Malaga and Valencia in Spain or Milan, Nice, Paris and Rome in Europe. Iberia expects to carry 53,000 passengers on this route in the first year of operation.

The non-stop Miami-Barcelona flight will be the second U.S route inaugurated by Iberia this week as the airline has also started flying this past Monday, March 28, between Los Angeles and Madrid. Iberia offers now three non-stop flights weekly from Los Angeles on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays – with an additional Friday flight from July to September.

The aircraft used on these routes will be a 254-seat Airbus A-340/300, with a 36-seat Business Plus section, recently redesigned, that offers 2.20 meters of space for each passenger and seats that unfold into horizontal beds.

To promote the new Miami-Barcelona route , Iberia is awarding triple frequent flyer points for tickets acquired in iberia.com through May 31st. The 1,800 points obtained flying from Miami to Barcelona are enough to pay for three return Madrid-Barcelona shuttle flights, for two return trips between Madrid and Casablanca, or for one return flight between Madrid and Athens, Istanbul, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, or other cities in Europe.

Now Iberia operates 10 weekly flights from Miami to Spain: apart from this new Miami-Barcelona route, it flies daily from Miami to Madrid. Iberia’s operations in Miami began on August 3, 1972. These new routes, together with the overall capacity increase on its flights from Boston, Chicago and New York to the Spanish capital will consolidate the United States as Iberia’s most important long-haul market. In 2011 the airline will offer a total of 1,164,000 seats between the Spain and USA, representing a 13 per cent increase from 2010.

The new flights and the overall capacity increase are part of the joint business launched in October last year by Iberia, American Airlines and British Airways for routes over the North Atlantic. Customers of the three airlines have now more travel options available, with more frequencies, more destinations and better connections across their networks. The three airlines’ combined route network serves 433 destinations in 105 countries with almost 5,200 daily departures.

American Airlines and British Airways will also start new services as a consequence of the joint business. Beginning April 5th, American launches service from JFK to Budapest and on May 1st, it begins a new flight from Chicago to Helsinki. Also, British Airways will begin service from San Diego to London on June 2nd.

Dream in Green’s annual fundraiser made lots of green at their anniversary event by Betty Alvarez

A who’s who of sustainability and environmental finance attended the Dream in Green’s Anniversary fundraiser held on April 1st at the beautiful Palms Hotel & Spa, on Miami Beach. Dream in Green (South Florida’s largest environmental-education non profit) joined Sustainability 2011 with its party-of-the-year, Living the Dream.

The eco-fabulous Palms Hotel generously donated 3-hours of complimentary delectables and cocktails. The 2011 Green Innovators and community leaders who were honored that evening were The Heat Group, Miami-Dade County’s Office of Sustainability, DecoBike and Assurant. Roger Bustamante (of Miami Symphony) set the mood with his bossa nova trio while guests bid on the over-the-top silent auction items. This year, Dream in Green started the bidding early through the pre-event, online auction, at www.dreamingreen.org.

The evening was emceed by Emmy-winning weathercaster, Trent Monge. Dream in Green received a Proclamation from Commissioner Jerry Libbin and the City of Miami Beach and there was also a beautiful art installation of each guest’s ‘green dream’ written on leaves, swaying in the Palms bamboo grove. The beautiful winner of the Miss Green Earth pageant was also in attendance.

All proceeds from this event are going to be used to expand the Green Schools Challenge program in South Florida. The Green Schools Challenge is currently in over 100 schools (K-12) and fosters green citizenship in upcoming generations by promoting energy and water conservation, waste reduction and sustainable community principles.

It was for sure a very special and memorable evening.

To celebrate the launch of the virtual boutique, MIYO Home commissioned eight local artistic visionaries along with a celebrity interior designer to create a customized MIYO Home Chair. “The Juvenile Bipolar Research is a foundation that is very near and dear to me,” said MIYO Home co-owner and long-time supporter Fati Rosenberg. “It’s the first charitable organization fully committed to the support of research for the study of early-onset bipolar disorder; my ultimate goal is to draw awareness to the foundation and further aid in the study and treatment of this debilitating condition.”

The Chair-ity event took place at the beautiful MIYO Home Zen Garden where the eight completed MIYO Home Chairs were unveiled. Guests gathered while artists share insight on their inspiration as well as why they chose to collaborate for this important cause. On behalf of the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation, Dr. Demitri F. Papolos, M.D., Director of Research, was on hand to commemorate MIYO Home and supporters.

Among the eight visionaries who donated their talents were Thom Filicia, celebrity interior designer and TV personality; Seth Browarnik, celebrity lensman; local designer and developer, Mario Egozi; Miami-based European artist, Iran Issa Khan; Coral Gables interior designer, Hillary Scrutis; renowned interior designer, Briggs Solomon; Miami’s most sought after landscape designers, Fernando Wong and Miami-based interior designer, Robert Zemnickis.

The Intercontinental Miami hosts Chef with a Purpose: Haiti event By Betty Alvarez

The InterContinental Miami was the host for its Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti partnership with Project Medishare for Haiti, Inc. and International Firefighters Assistance, Inc. (IFA). The second annual Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti fundraising event was held on March 30 at the InterContinental Miami and benefitted the Haiti rebuilding efforts of these two nationally recognized, 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.

Both organizations have been providing assistance to Haiti well before the 2010 earthquake and were present, ready to assist, in the Port-Au-Prince ‘ground zero’ at the moment tragedy struck. This year, the organizations are joining forces and leveraging their resources to collaborate on efforts to train emergency responders and critical care medical workers in Haiti.

IFA’s mission and work in Haiti initiated in 2002 with a small helmet and bunker coat donation from South Florida firefighters. It was founded by Lieutenant Nate Lasseur, a 13 year veteran of the West Palm Beach Fire Rescue on a trip to Haiti, his parents’ homeland. The need in early 2000 remains the same now as there continues to only be two firefighter stations in the country. IFA has since grown to provide humanitarian assistance, support, education and training to firefighters and emergency rescue workers in underprivileged countries.

Project Medishare has been on the ground in Haiti since 1994, founded by Drs. Barth Green and Arthur Fournier from the University of Miami School of Medicine. The organization has evolved into a vital component of Haitian life running the only trauma and critical care hospital in Haiti with the only Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the first spinal cord injury unit for paralyzed patients in the country. As a healthcare provider in Haiti, Project Medishare also trains healthcare professionals, funds sustainable health programs and provides technology, supplies and equipment to their clinic in Haiti and surrounding areas.

The Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti event was conceived after the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010. At the time, the InterContinental Miami reached out to its staff to determine how many were from and/or had family in Haiti. Nearly 90 employees, approximately one-fifth of the hotel’s staff, were affected. The hotel assisted its employees and families in a variety of ways such as assistance in locating lost loved ones and monetary and product donations. The fundraising event was created shortly thereafter to be able to have a greater reach in assisting the people of Haiti.

The InterContinental Miami organizes this event by donating its staff time and event space and services with 100 percent of the event proceeds going the Project Medishare and IFA. “Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti was born of compassion and the urgency to partner with local community organizations in the relief efforts. We are honored to partner for the second year with International Firefighters Assistance and to begin a new partnership with Project Medishare,“ said Robert Hill, General Manager of the InterContinental Miami. “One year later, this event takes on a greater importance because Haiti is not forgotten. More than ever we need to continue to promote awareness and provide much needed help that is still required.“

Dr. Barth A. Green, Co-Founder and President of Project Medishare stated, “Project Medishare is delighted to be partners in the exciting Chefs with a Purpose: Haiti event. Project Medishare serves hundreds of thousands of people throughout Haiti with programs ranging from community health and development to trauma and critical care. The most important ingredients in our recipe for Haiti are creating infrastructure and sustainable programs including capacity building (i.e. train the trainers) which are all mixed together to create a final product labeled long-term commitment.”

“There is strength in unity and we feel so fortunate to be partnering with the InterContinental Miami again, as well as Project Medishare,” said Lt. Nate Lasseur, Founder and President of International Firefighters Assistance. “Together we can leverage resources to do more and empower the Haitian people to respond to and prevent the numerous public safety and health concerns they face. We can’t stop emergencies from occurring, but we can help Haiti better prepare for them.”

Guests of Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti were greeted with music by renowned Haitian performers Mushy Widmaier and Phyllisia Ross. The event was featured over 20 tasting stations each offering a signature menu item by the participating top chefs. The evening’s silent auction will feature items ranging from hotel stays, unique dining experiences, art and other luxury items. A new addition this year is a Haitian art exhibit by Michele Frisch, Haiti’s leading art curator and collector. From March 16 through April 6, the lobby of the InterContinental Miami will feature Haitian art from the Galerie Marassa collection and coincide with arteaméricas, the premier fair of art from Latin America.

They have trained hotel staff in Haiti on first aid skills which they were able to use during the earthquake, coordinated and trained a group of over 20 Haitian firefighters in a fire training facility in the US, participated in the search and rescue mission and rescued many victims from the rubbles during the earthquake and they’ve delivered tents and care packages to the Haitian firefighters, their families, providing shelter to over 200 homeless earthquake victims. Additionally, the IFA has designed Project HELP: Haiti Emergency Lifesavers Program. This is a relief program designed to assist communities in taking care of their families and neighbors in the aftermath of major disasters as well as personal emergencies. Every year in America, 50,000 storage facilities hold auctions for abandoned storage units and, at these auctions, over $1 billion worth of goods changes hands. Each unit has the potential to be a goldmine or a bust for those who make their living hunting unclaimed property. “Auction Hunters” cuts the lock and opens the door into the high stakes, financial risks and potential rewards where the right purchase can bring in serious cash. The series follows Haff and Jones in their quest to win auctions, dig for abandoned historical treasure and sell them for a profit. This season they uncover high-valued items including a Winchester model 1912 shotgun valued at $1,500 and the exact scale remote control replica of a $3,000,000 luxury Viper Fan Jet plane valued at $11,500.
Allowed only a brief glimpse inside the unit before each fast-paced auction begins, skill and strategy are paramount as Haff and Jones have only seconds to estimate the value and determine how high they’re willing to bid to beat out the completion. Each episode will also feature “the dig,” a process by which our hunters literally dig into the contents of the unit and assess every item within as well as “the sell” where they consult experts, establish value and negotiate a sale with collectors and dealers.

The Ugly Duckling
A Miami-Dade Public Library System Storytelling Festival Event
Saturday, April 2 at 11:00 AM
Coral Gables Public Library
3443 Segovia Street
Telephone 305-460-5600

Everyone feels sometimes as though they don’t fit in. This is the case for the Ugly Duckling, who is awkward, the wrong color, the wrong size, and definitely not the model duckling in the family. In spite of these challenges, she perseveres through many adversities, only to find that she is not a duck at all – but a beautiful swan. Hans Christen Andersen’s folk take is just as relevant for kids today as it was 200 years ago. Momentum’s dancers waddle, preen, swim, and finally fly in this tale of finding oneself! For ages 4-10 and their families.

South Florida will be treated to a rich and explosive combination of jazz and reggae when Jamaican jazz great Monty Alexander, renowned reggae crooner Maxi Priest, and respected cabaret singer A.J. Brown hit the stage for the first annual Reggae Jazz Fusion.

The event is slated for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 Southwest 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 7:00 pm and celebrates Alexander’s 50 years in music.

Legendary Jazz pianist Monty Alexander will bring five decades of extraordinary talent and showmanship to the stage. With over 60 albums under his belt, the world renowned musician has an extensive repertoire to choose from. From classical jazz to reggae, Alexander will take the audience on a musical journey with harmonic and melodic turns, culminating in a crescendo of musical excellence, which has earned him a place in the top five in Hal Leonard’s book The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time.

Alexander’s collaborations span multiple genres, styles, and generations. His projects have been as varied as assisting Natalie Cole in her tribute album to her father, Nat “King” Cole in 1991 (the resulting album, Unforgettable, won seven Grammy awards), performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” under the direction of Bobby McFerrin at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and recording the piano track for the film score of Clint Eastwood’s Bird, a movie about the life of jazz titan Charlie Parker.

Project R Raises Awareness Of Global Issues
Sponsored by Miami Dade College’s Earth Ethics Institute, New World School of the Arts’ Music and Visual Arts divisions have come together to bring forth environmental issues central to humanity. Lead by NWSA faculty members Rosario Martinez-Cañas, Dr. Susan Epstein Garcia, and Dr. Ferdinando De Sena, the collaborative project, titled PROJECT R, uses art as a springboard to initiate a dialogue among NWSA and MDC students about urban and natural environmental global issues.

The goal of PROJECT R is to highlight environmental problems, both urban and natural, through a series of branding actions and events that resonate with the target group. With words such as Reconsider, Rebirth, Repair, Revolution, and Reinvent, the project first aims to initiate an environmental dialogue among the NWSA / MDC group. An interactive wall installation will be erected at the MDC Wolfson Campus to depict graphically the issues raised during the first stage of PROJECT R. A collaborative effort, the wall includes the work of the seven college graphic designers who will interpret each of the environmental issues that their music counterparts chose. Finally, NWSA college and high school music students will present PROJECT R – A Concert at the Colony Theater, to illustrate the environmental issues through a combination of music compositions.

Rewriting The World Primers And Poetry In The Age Of Confusion Exhibition On View In The Wolfsonian’s Rare Book And Special Collections Library Vestibule 4/7/11

‘Rewriting The World: Primers And Poetry In The Age Of Confusion’ Exhibition On View In The Wolfsonian’s Rare Book And Special Collections Library Vestibule
April 7, 2011
The Wolfsonian
1001 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Rewriting the World: Primers and Poetry in the Age of Confusion. Drawing on the museum’s holdings of rare books from the early twentieth century, the selection of materials represents a range of attempts to define the contours of everyday life through renovations of language. Whether a motorcar marketing booklet, a literacy manual for non-native speakers, or a poem comprised of innovative typography and non-sense sounds, these works emerged from certain social and political agendas. The exhibition surveys the ways in which such agendas are inscribed in the rudiments of language—set into speech and written into thought.

Rewriting the World is organized by Matthew Abess, curatorial research assistant at The Wolfsonian. The exhibit will be on view April 7 through June 5, 2011 and includes evangelical alphabet primers, National Socialist toothpaste pamphlets, Czech photo-texts, typographic fairytales, and end-of-the-world scenarios filmed by the angel of Notre Dame.

“For the writers, designers, and even corporations behind these works, the transformation of everyday life was something to be achieved by linguistic means, and especially by the transformation of language itself,” notes Matthew Abess. “At their most effective, these efforts to initiate readers into certain visions of the present and future are well concealed. This exhibition aims to make them manifest.”

The exhibition is organized in response to the stated mission of the O, Miami poetry festival that every single person in Miami-Dade County encounter a poem during the month of April. Following this call for encounters, The Wolfsonian also will be projecting Abeceda 2000 in its street front windows from nightfall to sunrise beginning on April 7, 2011. The film recreates the Liberated Theater’s performance of Abeceda—an icon of Czech avant-garde poetry, dance, and constructivist design—using the 1926 “photo-text” publication as its visual guide.

In conjunction with the exhibition and in collaboration with independent curator Brett Fletcher Lauer, The Wolfsonian has also invited five contemporary writers to contribute original postcard poems written through the themes in Rewriting the World. The postcards will be distributed in the museum and also will be used in O, Miami’s international call for mail art, a part of the Abe’s Penny Live installations at ArtSeen, where visitors will be sending the postcards to writers and curators internationally as well as to random addresses throughout Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, April 22nd, following the 6pm gallery tour, Matthew Abess, and director of O, Miami Scott Cunningham, will introduce Rewriting the World and engage with the audience about matters of poetry, persuasion, and the language of everyday life. Wine reception to follow; event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Julieth Dabdoub at 305.535.2622 or julieth@thewolf.fiu.edu.

O, Miami is a county-wide poetry festival inaugurating in April 2011. Produced by the University of Wynwood and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, it is a month-long series of events and projects mixing traditional readings with innovative poetry-in-public-places projects, weaving poetry into the fabric of the city’s infrastructure and cultural life. The events will culminate in a four-day series of readings, April 27-30 at the New World Center. For more information and a full schedule of events, visit omiami.org.

The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
The Wolfsonian is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. Admission discount in effect through April 14, 2011: $5 for adults; $3.50 for seniors, students, and children age 6 -12; and free for Wolfsonian members, State University System of Florida staff and students with ID, and children under six. The museum is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm; Friday from noon-9pm; and is closed on Wednesday. Contact us at 305.531.1001 or visit us online at www.wolfsonian.org for further information.

Hebrew Melodies of the Romantic Era presents the rarely played but rich tradition of Eastern European Jewish music.
Isabelle Durin and Michaël Ertzcheid seek to preserve the voice of the Jewish shtetl and compile compositions from across Europe and Russia; yiddish songs, liturgical music and Hassidic dance tunes are integrated with Western composition traditions (Hector Berliow, Camille Saint-Saëns . Claude Debussy etc…). As musicians, Durin and Ertzscheid convey a powerful and evocative message.
They play with a firm understanding of the traditions for which they speak, incorporating bent notes and quarter tones characteristic of Eastern European music.
If Durin and Ertzscheid’s desire is to include an authentic Jewish voice in the classical Western canon, they fall short of their goal. They convincingly and beautifully capture the voice of suffering and tragedy that so frequently is the tale of the Jews. The result of this is music that is as intense and heartwrenching as the Jewish experience itself.

Right: Phil Kyo Jang. “Capture”. 105 x 53 cm. Acrylic on canvas
From April 9 through May 31, 2011

For its second exhibition, Myra Galleries is proudly introducing artists from the eastern and far eastern parts of the world, specifically from Korea, Australia and Iran. The gallery is very excited to introduce audiences to this new exhibit and invites the public to attend the opening night event on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Artist Kwon Soon IK was born in South Korea in 1959. “In my recent works, simple and every day objects often appear as main subject matters. Those things such as bags, shoes, lighters, spoons, chopsticks, clothes, etc, are not meant for artistic practices, but the fact that I incorporate them into my work, automatically transforms these objects into a collection through which my life and emotions are permeated. There is also the use of calligraphy and raised texts in my newest body of work, some of them representing patterns of the Korean alphabet. My intention was not to be satisfied with a mere visual delivery, but to represent Korean culture and emotions through the canvas.” Kwon Soon IK has exhibited his works in museums and collections in Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Japan, and the United States. Some of his pieces were on view at Art Basel Miami last year.

Paul Ching – Bor was born in 1963 and moved to Sydney, Australia in 1987. There he focused on watercolors, portraying primarily the suburban neighborhood of Paddington, where his studio was located. In 1990 Ching-Bor received a scholarship sponsored by Mercedes-Benz and an award from the Royal Agricultural Society for the study of fine art in New York. In the following year he received the Overseas Study Travel Grant from the Rotary Club of Camberwell, Victoria, Australia. During the next four years he saved money to make sure that he would be able to prolong his stay beyond the scholarship’s term, and in 1996 he was able to realize a long-held desire to move to New York. “When I first walked down the streets of Manhattan I was curious about the impact this strident city and the jostling crowds would have on my work,” Ching-Bor recalled. The structures, arches, and bridges immediately inspired me, and particularly suited my limited color palette. My favo rite colors are black and white, and I found I was able to tackle New York subjects in a very free way that, in the early stages, suggests abstract painting.”

Phil Kyo Jang was born in Korea in 1968. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the College of Fine Arts, Se-Jong University. This talented artist will be exhibiting for the first time in Miami. He says about his dummy figures, “The dummy is a representation of an ordinary human being. Ordinary people have no specific character but have only desire, selfishness and weakness.” Jang use humor and wit to describe humans.

Hossein Edalatkhah was born in Iran in 1979. His oil on canvas works are representing his protest against undemocratic and discriminated societies and governments especially in Iran. His work in the exhibition is a series of eight pieces titled “My body, my private life, my biography.” The artist states, “My body is my source to protest against the governmental propaganda. In my collection I decided to look back to my history so you can witness Safavieh, Qajar, Pahlavi, and Islamic Republic periods.”
Niki Kouhpayma was born in Persia in 1976. He is coming to Miami with very fresh ideas in her photos.

Miami Art Museum 4th Annual MAM Corporate Luncheon 5/13/11

Miami Art Museum Corporate Luncheon To Honor Bank Of America For Its Support Of South Florida’s Arts Community
Friday, May 13, 2011
Four Seasons Hotel Miami

Fourth Annual Miami Art Museum Corporate Luncheon

Miami’s business, civic and cultural leaders will gather to honor the private sector’s impact on South Florida’s cultural landscape during the Fourth Annual Miami Art Museum (MAM) Corporate Luncheon on Friday, May 13, 2011. Bank of America, one of the world’s largest financial institutions and a mainstay of support in South Florida’s cultural community, will receive the 2011 Miami Art Museum Corporate Honors for its community development activities including its Museums on Us program, and its philanthropic efforts and consistent support of South Florida’s cultural institutions. Since 1998, Bank of America has provided sustaining support to the Annual Fund for exhibitions and education at Miami Art Museum.

This year’s MAM Corporate Luncheon, presented by South Motors Automotive Group, will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Miami from 11:30am until 2pm. Luncheon proceeds will support The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, an exhibition which Miami Art Museum will present in 2012 with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge initiative.

“We are proud to honor Bank of America for its longtime commitment to enacting positive change in South Florida,” said Aaron Podhurst, chairman of Miami Art Museum’s board of trustees. “Bank of America’s support for the arts is a shining example of how our community’s corporate citizens are directly impacting our cultural institutions, and in the process, our economy and quality of life. Miami Art Museum’s strength as a public-private partnership will take on added significance as we continue our capital campaign in the span leading up to the debut of our new building in Museum Park.”

Antonio L. Argiz, CEO and managing partner of accounting firm Morrison, Brown, Argiz & Farra, LLC, will serve as 2011 Luncheon Honorary Chair. Pedro A. Fernandez, principal of Bernstein Global Wealth Management, and Alex Espenkotter, partner with law firm Heller Waldman, PL, will serve as Luncheon Chairmen.

Thomas Collins, director of Miami Art Museum, and Dennis Scholl, Vice President, Arts, for John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will serve as keynote speakers during the luncheon. In an address, entitled “Growing Miami, Growing Miami Art Museum: A Dialogue for the Corporate Community,” Collins and Scholl will discuss the current state of affairs in Miami’s arts and cultural landscape, which has undergone a dramatic resurgence in recent years.

“Miami Art Museum’s annual Corporate Luncheon is an opportunity for our business and civic community to reflect on the collective impact the private sector has had on raising Miami’s profile as an international arts destination,” said Collins. “Looking ahead, our corporate partners will play an increasingly pivotal role in our institutional advancement as we expand our programming and educational initiatives in our new Museum Park home.”

Collins is an arts administrator, art historian, educator and author with more than 15 years of museum experience. He joined the Museum as director in 2010 after serving for five years as director of the Neuberger Museum of Art in Westchester County, New York. An art collector for more than 30 years, Scholl has lead local and national philanthropic efforts in the visual arts. In addition to having served as founding co-chair of the Miami Art Museum Collectors Council, he has served as founding chair of the Guggenheim Photography Committee and of the Tate Modern American Acquisitions Committee.

Luncheon sponsorships are available, ranging from $2,500 for a partial table to $20,000 for two tables of ten. Individual tickets range from $150 for a single ticket to $1,500 for a partial table and recognition in the event program.
