Dive into the Summer season with a curated film cycle featuring new cinematic classics at Faena Hotel Miami Beach’s Screening Room. Under the direction of Jaie Laplante, Director of Programming at Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival, this four-film cycle—aptly named “Vacations”—presents a series of storylines centered on the concept of summer vacations, escapes, road trips and the like in which characters seek to break away from their everyday existence only to find they’ve brought their inescapable selves along for the ride.

Week #1 – Pauline at the Beach (France, 1983, Éric Rohmer), 94 minutes.
The third – and sexy best – of Rohmer’s comédies et proverbs series features two cousins, the older Marion and the younger Pauline, taking a summer vacation on the northwest coast of France. Marion has firm ideas about love, whereas the impressionable Pauline is still defining her approach to men. Rohmer wisely and wittingly skewers our human capacity for self-delusion when it comes to sorting out matters of the heart.

Week #2 – Stranger Than Paradise (USA, 1984, Jim Jarmusch), 99 minutes.
The first film from the legendary of icon of American independent cinema still surprises today with its unconventional editing rhythms and often-imitated but never surpassed deadpan comedy. Willie, a New York slacker gets an unexpected visit from his Hungarian cousin Eva, on her way to Cleveland to visit Aunt Lotte. Later, Willie and his friend Eddie take a road trip to pick up Eva and take her on vacation to Florida. Jarmusch’s professional debut won the prestigious Camera d’Or at Cannes for best first film.

Week #3 – Y tu mamá también (Mexico, 2001, Alfonso Cuarón), 106 minutes.
The film that won Cuarón his first Oscar nomination also catapulted Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna into international stardom. Two teenage friends from different sides of the class divide, Tenoch and Julio, brag about the most beautiful secluded beach in Mexico’s to Tenoch’s cousin-in-law Luisa, who has just moved to Mexico from Spain, and offer to take her there on a road trip. But this is no ordinary vacation – for the boys, it is a journey into adulthood, and complexity. Also starring Maribel Verdú.

Week #4 – Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Spain/USA, 2008, Woody Allen), 96 minutes.
Woody Allen’s art soared in new directions once he ventured out of his New York City-only settings, like this droll visit to Spain. American tourists Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) take a vacation to Barcelona, where they meet the famous seducer and artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), and his tempestuous former wife Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz, in the famous performance that won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress).

Rampin is a street sweeper at the “Circus of Dreams,” the legendary circus for clowns. The Miami FC returns home on Saturday, May 13 when the Club hosts Indy Eleven on Brazilian Heritage Night.

Miami and Indy were evenly matched last season, with each club picking up a win, a loss and a draw. Rampin is a street sweeper at the “Circus of Dreams,” the legendary circus for clowns. His dream is to become a world-renowned clown, but his shyness and clumsiness keeps him from reaching his ultimate goal over and over again. Sad and distraught he decides to retire —- shortly after working different odds jobs he falls into a deep sleep state that takes him onto a fabulous adventure (SOGNO) where he meets other aspiring circus dreamers. Rampin and his new friends take the audience on an immersive journey to turn their clown dreams into a reality and overcome a variety of obstacles during the magical voyage.

SOGNO pushes the imagination of childhood fantasy dreams of the circus. International acrobats are part of the world of SOGNO, who are determined to wake up the imagination of the youngest child to the adult who never gives up on dreaming.

The Peace Ambassador Leadership Summit is a week-long summer program where a diverse group of high school students are invited to exercise their leadership abilities, while forming meaningful friendships. PALS is a safe and judgement-free environment where students share their personal experiences and find commonalities with their peers.

Since it’s inception in 2014, PALS has created a network of hundreds of students from across the country that have become peer mentors, college roommates, confidants, and have made a lifelong pledge to be upstanders rather than bystanders. Workshops at PALS include, but are not limited to, topics on suicide prevention, cyber, girl-to-girl, and racial & ethnic bullying.

Experiencing life on a college campus, gives students insight into college life, while the PALS curriculum simultaneously prepares them in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal skills, how to search for grants and scholarships, and the importance of building a community.

May 5: The City of Miami Beach First Friday series presents blues mistress Rachelle Coba at Normandy Fountain from 6-9 PM. The concert is FREE. With riffs that can bring down the house and a voice to shake hearts, Rachelle Coba is a torrential force that sweeps away every audience. With her expertise in string instruments, Rachelle works magic to create amazing cover arrangements—acoustic or electric. In this role she played countless festivals including the Chicago Bluesfest and the Kerrville Texas Folk Festival, and opened for numerous acts like Johnny Winter, Coco Montoya and Koko Taylor. Miami is where she would make a life changing encounter with blues legend Buddy Guy. Since then, she has toured and performed with Super Chikan, Albert Castigila, Grady Champion, and Ray Drew. She has just returned from headlining in Australia at the Blues at Bridgetown Festival and the Perth Blues Club. Featured also are Allen Paul, keys; A.J. Kelly, bass; and Raul Valdes, drums. Galeria Adelmo is proud to present a retrospective exhibition of black and white photographs by Miami-based photographer William Riera. The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, May 26th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm and it will be on view until June 28th.

As described by the artist, at the present time most of his body of work is produced in color, but William acknowledges that the images he best connect with are those that once stripped of their colors make the viewer to pause and to look closely, accentuating their form, texture, and overall soul, proving that a photograph without color can be captivating.

The photographs in this exhibition are a selection of the artist’s impressive black and white photography portfolio that encompasses photos taken from his early beginnings when he was only shooting film up to the current days when he excels in digitally William Riera was born in 1967 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. In 1990 he graduated with the highest honors as a Software Systems Engineer from Havana’s Polytechnic University. In 1995 he moved to the USA, settling in Miami. Since 1998 he has devoted his professional career to the public sector working as an IT Developer and Project Leader for the Information Technology Department of Miami-Dade County.

Riera has exhibited his work around several local art galleries and other alternatives art venues where he has been selected as a finalist in several juried photography exhibitions like Capturing Coral Gables, Miami Photo Salon, and also he was selected as “Best in Show” in the Photo-voice Exhibition. He has also showcased his work in several local collectives exhibitions and in Vero Beach, Florida. His work has been featured in Coral Gables TV, El Nuevo Herald, magazine Dominicana en Miami, Cuban e-magazine Fullframe. Riera was also featured in the XVII Yearbook of the Literary Magazine “Baquiana” participating with their staff in their presentation at Miami’s Spanish Cultural Center and at the XXXVIII edition of Mexico City’s Palacio de la Minería International Book Fair. He is currently studying a Workshop about Photographic Criticism and Curatorial Studies taught by Página en Blando, a photography school located in Mexico City.

Galeria Adelmo located in the Little Havana district opened in April of 2010. Its primary goal is to represent and promote the art works of local established or emerging artists from South Florida and other areas of country and also from the rest of the Americas.

Thus, any player, from any industry, can come in unexpectedly with a new business model, fueled by innovative technologies and ideas, and render everyone else obsolete. Therefore, companies need to operate in a state of hyper revolution with the inherent capacity and competency to evolve quickly. For companies and entrepreneurs, that means institutionalizing innovation. Empowering and appreciating employees for increased effectiveness. Having strategies to satisfy clients’ functional and emotional needs. Looking at all market players, even competitors, as potential partners in various levels of alliance. Looking at technology as an increasing enabler of effective change. Constantly looking at new ways of thinking and acting.

Experts suggest that disruptive technology trends to watch for in 2017 include artificial intelligence, automation of everything (cars, finance, etc.), internet of everything, virtual reality, 3D printing, biometrics and digital ID, big data, healthcare, mobile workforce, and space exploration.

Batuke Samba Funk has quickly become one of South Florida’s favorite party bands in the last few years. The group mixes rhythms from Brazilian samba and with classic 70s American funk. The goal of Batuke is to “brazilianize” American sounds, and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfectly balanced fusion. The band is formed by several of Miami’s top Brazilian musicians including bassist and composer Diogo Brown, guitarist Cezar Santana and singer Mari Mac. They have performed with top Brazilian artists like Vanessa da Mata, and also James Brown’s legendary sax player Pee Wee Ellis. Their irresistible groove-fueled sound is influenced by top Brazilian and US funk and artists, including Jorge Ben Jor, Earth, Wind & Fire, Tim Maia and Seu Jorge, among others.

Ibargüen and Lipsey will be honored at the 20th Donor Next Door Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, in Miami. The luncheon also celebrates the philanthropy of more than 30 individuals, families, foundations and corporations that donate time and money to support the work of nonprofits in South Florida.

As president and CEO of Knight Foundation, Ibargüen oversees a national foundation with $2.3 billion in assets and $140 million in annual grants. Knight invests in programs in journalism, technology, and the arts and in the success of 26 U.S. cities. Ibargüen’s leadership and vision have spurred entrepreneurship and social change in Miami-Dade County, shaking up the status quo to make way for startups, groundbreaking technology programs and community organizations energized with new ideas and solutions.

Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting voices in jazz. Jean has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval , Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke to name a few. While attending High School in 2000, Jean performed with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC. In 2007, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

There will be a guest appearance by the dance troupe from the Haitian Arts and Culture for Children program. The afternoon will open with Dr. Ed Calle’s Student Jazz Ensemble, and there will be a Farmer’s Market courtesy of the Market Company.

The Town of Surfside invites Miamians to pack their picnic baskets for a family-friendly Moroccan Beach Picnic to kick-off the town’s much-anticipated monthly First Fridays event on Friday, May 5. Unlike any other community event, this casual soiree takes place on Surfside’s pristine beach and is a great way to experience the ever-evolving area like a local. Enjoy live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, drum circle and tipi village for kids, cold-pressed juices, coconut water courtesy of Harmless Harvest, and healthy snacks. For a hint of beachside couture, luxury women’s fashion boutique, Le Beau Moroc, plans to showcase new seasonal Moroccan designs during a fashion show on the sand. Not to mention, guests can take refuge from the sun under ornately designed oversized tents. The Moroccan Beach Picnic is scheduled for 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on May 5, 2017 at the Oceanfront Community Center, located at 9301 Harding Avenue in Surfside. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run, a three circuit 5K (3.1 mile) Run Walk, will once again wind its way through the streets of Downtown Miami. This collaborative effort between The Harvey Milk Foundation and The Pride Center at Equality Park, along with generous support from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, has put South Florida on the international stage of LGBTQ rights and activism in honor of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States who was assassinated shortly after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the election of Harvey Milk to public office.

The magical evening will commence with a lively cocktail reception and a variety of silent auction items. A seated three-course dinner will be followed by a memorable awards presentation hosted by Craig Stevens, WSVN evening news anchor. The charitable evening will culminate with a Stoli After-Party, also to be held at Hard Rock Live.

Headline entertainment will be provided by Well-Strung, a string quartet with a modern twist, featuring Edmund Bagnell (first violin), Christopher Marchant (second violin), Daniel Shevlin (cello) and Trevor Wadleigh (viola). The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor (1948-2015) developed Synergism as a new art method through a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.

Artist-led hands on workshop. Participants should bring two to three everyday objects (wood, leather, rubber, ceramics, metal, no fabrics) with a personal connection to their lives and hometown. Objects will be combined to create a community collage/art piece reflective of Ekaterina and Victor Khromin’s aesthetics. It’s time to bring a little culture to Downtown Miami! CULTRA is a roving Open Mic held in a Downtown Miami park every third-Thursday from January to May. Produced in collaboration with Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces this town has to offer. The CULTRA spaceship lands in newly christened Omni Park Miami for the April edition.

Our ringleaders this month are the quirky kids of Front Yard Theatre Collective who have been improv-ing their way to greatness for seven years. We’ll start with the usual 90 minutes of open mic time from 7:30 – 9pm followed by a feature performance from our rambunctuous hosts!

Originally created for The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, the Biennale of Moving Images (BIM) is a one-of-a-kind hybrid event that brings together visual artists, film directors and performers. It seeks to investigate new exhibition models and formats by building a show as a choir, merging polyphonic voices to offer a window into contemporaneity. This marks the 15th edition of the Biennale of Moving Images and the first time that it will be presented in the United States. Comprising a wide array of multimedia installations, films and documentaries as well as performances, the biennale is situated somewhere between a cinema festival, a constellation of solo video installations, one-night only performances and a site for research and experimentation. All works presented in the biennale are new, having been commissioned specifically for the event in 2016 in response to the current sociopolitical climate and as such are representative of the most innovative works in contemporary video and film production today.

Grammy-nominated jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa has been recognized as one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was included in the 2011 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. Ignacio also received a Lifetime Achievement Award during from The Montreal Jazz Festival in the same year.

Both a veteran and a pioneer, the Cuban-born drummer has been applauded through the years for his facility in combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk – resulting in a fiery blend that swings and grooves, with a touch of old country roots.

In the early 80s, Ignacio joined jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet, quickly becoming an in-demand drummer in the contemporary jazz world. Ignacio has also worked with other star artists like Tito Puente, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Gilberto Gil, the Lincoln Center Orchestra, and more.

Gillespie best described Ignacio as: “the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz…”.

The Ignacio Berroa Quartet positively sizzles and grooves, full of flair and flash. Ignacio possesses the uncanny ability to dazzle with his fills and lift a crowd to its feet. His electric energy, combined with his incomparable skill, gets people excited about playing drums in the first place.

Berroa will be joined by Martin Bejerano on piano, Lowell Ringel on bass and Mark Small on sax. Come experience the jazz-legend and his Quartet in action!

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. Throughout the months of April and May, there will be different workshops to learn about the elements of art through the style of Synergism.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa will present Fuerza Flamenca, with Guest Artist Pepe Flores direct from Spain, on Saturday, May 6 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, May 7 at 3:00 pm at the Gleason Room at the Fillmore on Miami Beach.
