Check out Hundred Waters on their North American Spring Tour!

The quartet’s members Nicole Miglis, Trayer Tryon, Paul Giese & Zach Tetreault played together in various formations as far back as middle school, but it took until adulthood and 2012 for them to become Hundred Waters. Living under one roof meant the band had a communal mentality, yet each maintained their own distinct projects, borrowing here and there from each other. It was in interpreting a friends’ music together that they discovered the power of their combination, and they quickly fell to work reorienting their lives around an album. The music they found was a beautiful blend of contradictions, mournful yet colorful, introverted yet aware, and brought the tradition of songwriting to a strange future. Initially released by their local label Elestial Sound, their self-titled debut soon became seen as the sound of Florida, drawing loose comparisons to Stereolab, Four Tet, and Bjork. Soon it attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, Skrillex, who signed the band to his OWSLA label that same year and gave the album a full-scale release, with remixes by Araab Muzik, Star Slinger, and TokiMonsta. Since then the band has taken its live show around the world, touring with artists such as Grimes, Julia Holter, Alt-J & the XX.

In May 2010, Peter Hook, legendary bassist of both Joy Division and later New Order, decided to honour the outstanding work of his first band and the undoubted genius of the late Ian Curtis by giving people the opportunity to hear both of Joy Division’s masterpiece albums, ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’, live and in their entireties. Backed by his new band The Light, Hooky first played ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at the Factory club in Manchester on May 18th & 19th 2010 in order to celebrate the life of Ian – one stand alone sold out night quickly became two, and due to phenomenal worldwide demand, Hooky then began taking the show on the road with headline gigs & major festival appearances throughout Europe, a full tour of Australia & New Zealand as well as the band’s first tour of the United States in December which culminated in Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell appearing live with the lads in Los Angeles to sing ‘Transmission’.

In keeping with FFCR’s mission and with Maxine’s tradition of giving back, guests are encouraged to bring new or gently used handbags or shoes, for Dress for Success.

ABOUT
Florida Foster Care Review promotes the safety, well-being and long-term success of abused and neglected children through volunteer-driven case reviews and system level advocacy. Florida Foster Care Review envisions a child welfare system that protects, heals and supports success for children, youth and young adults and their families.

To achieve its mission, Florida Foster Care Review (FFCR) recruits, trains and supervises volunteers who participate in monthly Citizen Review Panels that review cases of youth in foster care to ensure they are safe and receiving needed services. The panels submit recommendations to the Juvenile Dependency Court, which then become binding judicial orders. Together with child welfare professionals, FFCR also works to ensure that children and youth leaving the foster care system have someone they can call family. Through all its programs, FFCR not only promotes positive results at the individual level, but also tracks and analyzes outcomes in order to advocate for system changes that improve children’s lives.

A presentation at the Church of Perpetual Life in Hollywood, Florida will discuss breakthroughs in organ transplantation medicine.

Experts in the field believe that replacement of failed cells, tissues, or organs could cause over 30% of all deaths in the United States to be substantially postponed—increasing the chance of living to age 90 by more than 10 times.

Unfortunately, the supply of transplantable organs is much less than the demand. There are long waiting lists of potential organ transplant recipients, most of whom die before an organ becomes available. In the United States, it estimated that only about 2% of the potentially needed organ transplants are carried-out. Even when organs are transplanted, they may be poorly matched to the recipient, requiring immune suppression measures that decrease the quality and quantity of life of the recipient.

Come to the meeting to learn about breakthroughs in transplantation of heart, kidney, liver, lung, and other organs that could save many lives of people who die prematurely because of organ disease or failure.

Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 7:15 pm (doors open at 6 pm)

The service will be held at the Church of Perpetual Life

Experience a beautiful collection of large-scale Caribbean town plans, developed while Rafael Fornes taught at the University of Miami School of Architecture.

The compositional layouts draw from historic sources, including the Vatican Museum’s Gallery of Maps, pre-WWII American town plans and Giambatista Nolli’s legendary 18th century plan of Rome. Local and ecological references are also highlighted on the maps, as elements of folklore and geography are woven into the compositions, providing a more complete and colorful understanding of the cultural identity of each town or city.

Rafael Fornés is a Cuban-American architect and artist with architecture degrees from the Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echevarría in Havana, Cuba, and Budapesti Müszaki Egyetem in Hungary.

He practiced at Dirección Provincial de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, both in Havana; the Budapest Föváros Városépítési Tervezö Budapest, in Hungary, and, more recently, at Duany & Plater-Zyberk & Co., in Miami.

Fornés taught courses at the University of Miami School of Architecture, including Studies of Havana, Rome program graduate courses, and Open City Studio in Russia, in collaboration with the prestigious St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He was honored with the UM SoA Faculty Award for part-time faculty in 2006, before becoming a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame. Additionally, he served as lead coordinator of field trips and charrettes in Havana for the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism, and for both Notre Dame and Yale universities. He is currently working on a postgraduate program between the Institute of Classical Architecture & Arts and Colegio San Gerónimo, the oldest university in Cuba.

The exhibition will run from February 16 through February 28.

New York City artist Tony Curry has arrived in Miami and the art world is paying close attention. Self-proclaimed as a Fashion Surrealist he is best known for his painting titled “American Dream” depicting a breathtaking female draped in the iconic American flag wearing nothing more than a pair of red-soled Christian Louboutin high heels.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Curry’s debut of the limited edition sculpture series titled: “The Proposal” is a dichotomy of self-expression. A semblance of the male psyche that has always been at war with himself yields to the overpowering heartfelt appeal of true love. The inspirational piece is a beautifully crafted 24k gold hand grenade (non explosive) sculpture with an eye-popping engagement/wedding ring as the pull pin. A visual innovation for any collector; the grenade sculpture collection is being released in various chrome colors as well as precious metals.

The significant works create a must see exhibition for any contemporary art, fashion or fine food enthusiast. The premier at 1826 Restaurant and Lounge will be like no other. “I wanted to do something different on the art scene” explained Tagir Saydkuzhin. “Debuting world-class contemporary art combined with the best world-class food & music is innovation and that is what my restaurant is built on.”

“It is an honor to premier my work at 1826 Restaurant and Lounge,” said Curry “the hyper modern restaurant and nightclub is the perfect marriage for my work. I couldn’t think of a better partnership for The Proposal.”

Those looking to give all of yourself in a contemporary statement will view the “The Proposal” as a one of a kind embellishment of your eternal love. Meet us at 1826 Collins for a night to remember. For reservations call 305-763-8860.

About 1826 – Located in the heart of South Beach between 18th and 19th Street on Collins Avenue, 1826 Restaurant and Lounge is currently the hottest scene in Miami Beach. The four level 8,200 square foot hotspot is the vision of owner and Russian native Tagir Saydkuzhin who sought to combine the best food, the best music, the best service and now the best of the art world. The restaurant was designed by Samy Chams of Prospect Design. Its exquisite food is headed by Trophée Passion gold winning Chef Luke Bergman and team.

Dentistry from Our Hearts: Spreading Free Smiles Throughout South Florida

February 4, 2015

AVENTURA, FL — The Dental Care Group and Dental Care Group Kids are bringing free smiles back to the community! On Sunday, February 8, 2015, they’ll host the 4th annual Dentistry from Our Hearts. Their dental teams will be donating their time to provide free services including exams, cleanings, fillings, bondings, extractions, x-rays and emergency care at both their Aventura and Pembroke Pines offices during this year’s event.

With the help of their fellow dentists, hygienists, clinical and administrative teams, volunteers and sponsors, Dr. Rick Mars, Dr. Joel Glicksman and Dr. Josh Coussa have treated over 1000 patients and donated nearly half a million dollars in dental care through the Dentistry from Our Hearts program since 2012.

Tooth decay, which is almost entirely preventable, is the most common chronic illness among school-age children. Left untreated, it can result in infection, unbearable pain, loss of teeth and acute systemic infection. Yet nearly one in four American children have untreated tooth decay. For low-income children, the rate doubles.

“For many, a visit to the dentist is unaffordable and inaccessible. More than 85 million Americans have no form of dental insurance. We are looking to address this concern and give back to the members of our community who need it the most,” said Dr. Rick Mars.

The event will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on February 8th. Patients will be seen on a first come first served basis. If you would like more information on this event, or to schedule an interview with Dr. Rick Mars, please contact Leslie de Lepine at (305)935-2797 ext. 249 or via email at Leslie@dentalcaregroup.net.

Come celebrate Carnaval in Rio at Pinecrest Gardens, with Batuke Samba Funk, Miami’s finest Brazilian band, presented by KCC Productions. The roots of Carnaval trace back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who celebrated the rites of spring. Across Europe, including France, Spain and Portugal, people annually gave thanks by throwing parties, wearing masks and dancing in the streets. Such traditions were carried over to the New World. Carnival has come a long way since it was brought to Rio, having become one of the biggest events in the World. Tonight it comes to Pinecrest!

If you like Funk, Afro Beat, and Brazilian music, this is the right band for you. Batuke is a mix of Brazilian rhythms like Samba and Afro-Brazilian, with the raw 70’s Funk, creating a groovy atmosphere wherever the seven-piece band plays. Batuke Samba Funk was created by Brazilian bass player, composer, and producer Diogo Brown in 2009. Diogo studied at the Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro, and is one of the most accomplished and recognized Brazilian musicians in South Florida. He has played alongside artists such as Ricky Martin, Chris Delano, Nouvele Vague, Caludia Leitte, Beatriz Luengo, Don Omar, and Youtel (Orixas), among others. The core of the band consists of five Brazilian musicians and adds two American musicians on the horns. You can expect a hand-clapping, foot-stomping good time worthy of the celebration. The program will also feature a samba dancer in full Carnaval costume to brighten the proceedings still further!

The show is part of the South Motors Jazz Series, and will be in Pinecrest’s Banyan Bowl, 11000 SW 57th Ave. (Red Road), starting at 8 PM. Tickets are $25 and $30, available at pinecrestgardens.org.

Reyka Vodka Visits Miami

1-Trevor-Schneider-New-York-Cocktail-Ninja-Reyka-Vodka-Ambassador-2

If there is one thing Miami is doing well, it’s cocktails. Handcrafted cocktail hotspots like the Broken Shaker and Bodega prove that our cocktail scene is innovative and ahead of the curve. Plus, our local mixologists are respected and recognizable figures in the national hospitality circles. Would you expect any less from a top-tier nightlife destination like Miami?

Reyka Vodka brand ambassador, Trevor Schneider, can vouch for Miami’s cocktail credibility. When New York’s very own “cocktail ninja” arrived to our beautiful city last Saturday, he was excited to see that Miami is bringing our mixology A-game. The Broken Shaker, he says, is the prime example of how high Miami is setting the bar. That said, it comes as no surprise that he selected The Broken Shaker as the backdrop for re-introducing Reyka Vodka to the Miami community.

Earlier this week, Trevor invited local influencers to the Freehand Miami for a tasting of classic cocktails reinvented with Reyka Vodka. The menu featured three signature cocktails bound to take Miami by storm: the Reyka Cooler, the Harvest Collins, and the Icelandic Paloma. We loved all three, especially because each one had a distinct claim-to-fame. For example, the Harvest Collins had strawberry-infused vodka that made it dangerously delicious.

The free-flowing drinks, the gorgeous weather, and Trevor’s charisma were all contributing factors to a good time. 27 Restaurant and Bar sealed the deal by furnishing exquisite hors d’oeuvres that, to no one’s surprise, impressed everyone present. Overall the night was an incredible success. We speak for everyone when we say that you’re welcome back any time Reyka Vodka!

As a space committed to the growth and development of contemporary art in the USA and Latin America, we have created a new exhibition series called ExplorArt. Each year a new country will be selected to participate in an exhibition which includes members of the contemporary artscene of such place. To start our exhibition series we are happy to present artworks from the “Isla del Encanto”, Puerto Rico.

The selected artists explore concepts of metaphysics, colonialism, recycled art, technology and digital processes, the essence of humanity and others. The exhibition is meant to provide the South Florida community with an overview of contemporary puertorrican art. Participating artists include: Abdías Méndez Robles, Alejandra León Piñeda, Angel Rafael, Bárbara Díaz Tapia, Bobby M. Cruz, Carlos Ortiz, Edgardo Larregui, Frus Charoy (Melvin Reyes y Jeannette Michaelle Charoy), Juan Alberto Negroni, Julio Amill Martiz, Keoni García Lopez, Leandro Maseda, Lionel Cruet, Lorna Otero, Miguel A. Ruiz, Non Brand New (Oviany y Edward Victor) y Pedro Fortunato-Velázquez.

Vargas Gallery is the Vargas University professional art gallery coordinated by Vargas University Department of Art. Our mission is to encourage students, faculty and the local community to participate in a creative environment that exhibits works of art which engage spectators in dialogues with the contemporary artworld. Vargas Gallery exhibits the work of emerging artists as well as national and internationally recognized professional artists.

Join us Thursday, February 12th, 2015 from 6:00 pm-10:00 pm and collaborate with Vargas Gallery in building an art community in the City of Pembroke Pines. Exhibition will continue until March 26th, 2015.

Street art is a hot commodity in Miami, featured in our neighborhoods and in art auctions, fairs and events. It is also featured in advertisements, promotions and in other ways not always endorsed by the artists. Can street art be copyrighted? Artist’s rights have been in the news due to two well known law cases pitting street artists against corporate entities. The slippery nature of copyright law has left many wondering where to draw the line. There are no easy answers. Join us for a moot court style forum to explore this important topic.

Global art agency and gallery, Art Bastion Miami, will be showcasing an art exhibit of exclusive paintings from the ‘twice forgotten’ Russian colorist and fantastical realist, Boris Chetkov (1926 – 2010), February 21 – March 21, 2015. A V.I.P. wine reception will be hosted by Art Bastion Miami opening night on February 21st, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., where guests will enjoy complimentary cocktails and a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The Boris Chetkov: Portraits exhibition consists of the largest private collection of many never-before-seen paintings by Chetkov, owned by collector Peter Hoffman, Jr., founder of the Hoffman Art Institute.

Opening the exhibition will be Russian art historian and broadcast journalist, Rosie Rockel, who has co-curated this thought-provoking exhibit with the Hoffman Art Institute. Ms. Rosie Rockel regularly presents arts coverage and is considered one of the leading critical voices on Russian 20th century and contemporary art.

Mr. Peter Hoffman, Jr., will be inaugurating the show, in addition to local and international Modern Art experts. They will consider the techniques and lasting relevance of Chetkov’s portraits, that depict the duality – public and private persona – and duplicity that living under communism engenders, a highly relevant topic in Miami today.

Spanning three decades, Boris Chetkov: Portraits, brings together 20 important works from the zenith of Chetkov’s long career working in Russia during one of the most tumultuous periods in 20th-century history. The exhibition includes bold works created during Khrushchev’s Thaw of the 1960s, through his years painting in secret while working officially as a glass artist, up to his paintings made during the liberal glasnost years of the 1980s.

Art Bastion was founded by internationally recognized art collector and curator, Sebastiano Varoli, with the mission of discovering and representing artists around the world and introducing their artwork to broader audiences. Varoli has collaborated with renowned art initiatives ranging from the Musée D’Orsay in Paris to the Royal Ballet in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

Boris Chetkov: Portraits Exhibition will be open to the public February 21 – March 21, 2015
Tuesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The newest Garmin – navigate from land to sea on one device. In marine mode, the GPSMAP 640 provides tides and currents, depth contours, port plans, marine services and points of interest, while in automotive mode, the GPSMAP 640 announces street names with spoken turn-by-turn directions pulled from the preloaded City Navigator NT road maps for North America.

Record 97 new boating products honored for innovation – Show-goers can get a first glimpse at some of the industry’s best new products, recognized through the boat show’s Innovation Awards, which honor manufacturers and suppliers who bring new products to market. This year’s program received the highest amount of entries on record.
The new Accessory Pavilion, located outside the Miami Beach Convention Center, will showcase thousands of the latest boating gadgets and gear, plus engines and electronics from more than 85 companies.

Florida International University proudly presents the opening reception for the Solo exhibition of Miami artist Nate Dee. The exhibition will feature new works as when as pieces from his quote series of paintings.

Born and raised in South Florida, Nathan Delinois (Nate Dee) has numerous influences… this includes his Haitian background and the use of color in a lot of Haitian art, as well as in street art. The design quality of the Art Nouveau movement and the drama of Greek art from the Hellenistic. These elements can be seen in his work. Additionally, he takes some influences from the pop surrealists.

He has been featured in magazines such as Delve, Making Waves, WeMerge, DUO & the Miami New Times. In 2014 The New Times listed him as one of the 10 Miami Artists to follow on Instagram. In 2013 he was also given an Honorable mention by the magazine for their 2013 Miami Masterminds awards. He’s been featured on multiple blogs and has displayed his work in exhibits throughout South Florida.

Artist Statement
The series that I am working in is similar to a potpourri with a mélange of images and patterns. Usually based on a figurative element that is the focal point, the images and patterns are representative of my personal experiences, ideas, and philosophies. Although each piece is usually a direct response to the text contained with in, I still try to keep the actual meaning as ambiguous as possible. I want the viewer to find his or her own meaning and relationship to the artwork. At first glance there is a sense of whimsy in my work that is grounded by its urban visual elements.

The thrilling University of Miami-based Unbound Improv Ensemble emerged from an initiative of the multi-instrumentalist Matthew Taylor, percussionist Tyson Voigt and vocalist Jennifer Voigt in October, 2013. Since then, the group has performed around the city, including the Acoustica21 concert last April. While the Unbound players are superbly trained to perform the “classical” music, they also possess incredible curiosity to explore musical soundscapes beyond those prescribed in the scores. “As musicians we are always striving to expand our sensibilities and remain open to new paths,” explains Taylor.
The performance is only a part of it. It is through the focused listening to each other that new spontaneous musical experience transpire. Their virtuosity and artistry enables them to devour an hour with the most engaging and surprising musical acrobatics, often moving in the space and using imaginative performance techniques. You may need to travel far beyond the state border to hear a high caliber improvised acoustic music such as that performed by the Unbound Improv Ensemble. “It is important that more voices are heard in music community of Miami,” says Taylor about offering the city this new musical experience. May these acoustic alchemists conjure an event that will long resonate in the ears of the Miami music lovers!

The Memoir is one of the most popular and exciting genres in contemporary literature. But how does one begin to translate personal experience and shape it into a work of art that is accessible to readers whose experiences and concerns may be vastly different from our own? How can we begin to harness our autobiographical impulses and create stories that rival the best fiction and theater? How does one begin to shape the often amorphous sprawl of memory and contain it in the unified and emotionally stirring form we call a memoir? Given the fallibility of memory, why endeavor to write a memoir rather than a work of fiction? What are the emotional consequences and responsibilities of writing about people we know or have known? Is it permissible for the non-fiction writer to exaggerate, or even lie? This class will be a forum in which to discuss these and other pertinent questions.

Vagabond Restaurant and Bar soft opening in the new renovated Vagabond Hotel on Monday, January 12, 2105. The Vagabond Hotel is located in the MiMo District at 7301 Biscayne Blvd. We started out with the peanuts and chapulines with Szechuan peppercorn and lime and I could not stop eating them so yummy.  Then we had the zucchini salad with pistachio, tarragon and pipian sauce.  The heirloom tomato fattoush salad with black sesame, sheep’s milk feta and black radish.  The crispy fingerling potatoes with smoked paprika and sherry vinegar was so good. Next we tried the roasted baby carrots with mole, hazelnut, yogurt and za’atar and the sweetbread milanesa with swiss, country ham vinaigrette and mustard dill and it was delicious.   Next on the list was the iberico skirt steak and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly along with the  sweet and sour sun shrimp both were amazing.  Then we had the buttermilk fried quail. We made it to the desserts and my favorite was the pistachio cake it was so amazing it is a must try.

Romeo and Juliet is a timeless story about two young people caught up in a rush of emotions who trade in a future of sorrows, leave a neighborhood of quarrels behind in pursuit of training their beautiful minds. Set in Miami at the turn of the 21st Century, the protagonist couple’s choices change their lives, the course of their families – and their city forever! Featuring tango and hip hop choreography, spoken word, graffiti arts, original sound tracks and romantic musical scores – this production will enthrall and inspire young and older audiences to think anew!

Clare Vickery, Director of Grace Arts Center, has teamed up with Janet Erlick of the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater to coproduce R&J. Describing their inspiration behind the project, Erlick says, “It’s always wonderful to introduce Shakespeare to young audiences, as the themes and characters still resonate strongly today… this R&J project adapts the story and adds modern influences, music and multiple art forms to make a truly unique theatrical experience. This past summer, FLCT alumni and students began to explore how to combine hip hop, stage combat, tango and street art to highlight the worlds of the Capulets and Montagues, and the upcoming performances will take that foundational work and expand upon it.”

Tickets for the events are available at: romeoandjuliet2015.eventbrite.com, and retail for $15, or $25 for a VIP ticket including a reception, Meet & Greet with the cast following the performance. Workshops surrounding the performances will also be announced on www.gracecafeandgalleries.com.

Knight Arts Challenge South Florida 1/26/15 – 2/23/15

Knight Arts Challenge South Florida

14703-KF-KACM-Soul of Art_300x250Beginning Jan. 26, South Floridians can apply for the Knight Arts Challenge, which funds the best ideas for bringing the community together through the arts. The deadline for the challenge, a project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is Feb. 23. KnightArts.org

Knight Foundation will host a kickoff party at Gramps in Wynwood on Jan. 27, where applicants can meet other artists, past winners and Knight Foundation staff. In addition, as a way to recruit ideas from South Florida’s many neighborhoods, Knight Foundation will host a series of Community Q&A sessions. The events, taking place Feb. 2-5, will offer tips on creating a standout application, information on the challenge timeline and more. The schedule is below.

“Whether you are an arts organization or a small collective, a longtime South Florida artist or someone who moved to town recently, we want to hear from you,” said Dennis Scholl, vice president of arts for Knight Foundation. “Our goal is to make art general in South Florida. We do that through the challenge, and finding the best grassroots ideas for bringing our community together through the arts.”
Anyone can apply. All it takes is 150 words to fill out the initial application, which will be available at knightarts.org and is deliberately designed to be simple to encourage nontraditional applicants.

There are only three rules for the challenge:
1) The idea must be about the arts.
2) The project must take place in or benefit South Florida
3) The grant recipients must find funds to match Knight’s commitment.

Knight has received more than 8,900 ideas from the South Florida community since launching the challenge in 2008. In total, 241 projects have received almost $25 million in funding.

Since 2006, Knight Foundation has invested more than $86 million in South Florida’s cultural community. Those funds have launched a new media program that includes the signature “Wallcasts” at the acclaimed New World Symphony campus, helped present Ibero-American films at the Miami International Film Festival, and are bringing every Miami-Dade third-grader to the new Pérez Art Museum Miami, among other projects.  The approach is two-pronged: Knight Foundation aims to open up institutions to more South Floridians with large grants, while the Arts Challenge ensures that smaller, grassroots efforts fuel and refresh the arts scene.

The Knight Arts Challenge kickoff party takes place Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Gramps More Info

“The 27 Club” or “Club 27” is the colloquial name given to a group of influential rock musicians that died at the young age of 27. There are a few “members” who are always listed in “27 Club” groupings – such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, and more recently Amy Winehouse – while other musicians who were 27 at the time of their death are included sporadically, depending on who has composed the list (another term for this club-that-nobody-wants-to join is the Forever 27 club).Though the official causes of death for these famous people vary between the different musicians – from suicide to overdoses on sleeping pills to, yes, choking to death on vomit – drug and alcohol abuse is often cited as a primary cause behind many of these deaths. Everyone on this list will never turn 28 – they will be forever 27.

Fairchild’s 9th Annual Chocolate Festival Feeds Miami’s Mind and Soul

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-1

This weekend Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden lured us to Coral Gables with chocolate – their 9th Annual Chocolate Festival to be exact. Despite the overcast skies, the Garden came alive with live music, international eats, educational programming, and more chocolate than the eye could see. The two-day festival gave Miami families the perfect excuse to enjoy the beautiful grounds, indulge in chocolate delicacies, and learn about the cacao plant. During our visit, we did all these and more. Check out our five favorite moments from this year’s event:

1. Sampling a hot chocolate recipe from the 1750s. American Heritage, an authentic historic line of products from leading food manufacturer Mars, had a tent where we learned how hot chocolate was made from scratch in the 1750s and had the opportunity to sample the recipe. The demonstration included actual recreations of the ingredients and kitchen tools used back then, like the spices and chunk of sugar (wrapped in blue paper) shown below. Did you know that in the 1700s that amount of sugar would last one family approximately 6 months?

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-2

2. Learning about the history of cacao. “The Living History of Cacao and Chocolate” tent, which held presentations every hour on the chronology of cacao from ancient seed to modern candy bar, was the most notable addition to this year’s program. Our timing was off so we missed most of the speakers, but the friendly volunteers at the tent gave us a delicious consolation prize: a banana chocolate smoothie sample!

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-3

3. Exploring the greenhouse. We headed to the greenhouse with the mission of finding and witnessing Fairchild’s cacao tree first-hand. However, the lush vegetation and water features kept us in there for a good hour as we explored the many natural wonders the greenhouse had to offer.

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-4

4. Discovering the Wings of the Tropics exhibition. As we concluded our stroll in the greenhouse, we spotted the conservatory that houses Fairchild’s colorful butterflies and we knew we had to go inside. The exhibition was well-worth the detour – the butterflies were awe-inspiring despite the limited sunshine. Did you know that butterflies are more active on sunny days? They rely on the sun to raise their body temperatures so they can fly.

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-5

5. Enjoying the festival ambiance. Once we had our fill of chocolate, we grabbed a roasted corn on the cob and sat down on the grass to enjoy the harmonious sounds of Solar Dogs, a Coconut Grove-based string band that was our favorite part of last year’s chocolate festival. Sitting there, watching families spending time together, couples dancing, and savoring our delicious corn, we were in absolute festival bliss. Fairchild, you really know how to make us happy!

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre continues its celebrated 2014-2015 season with a regional premiere production of the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime from January 28 – February 22, 2015. This sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African American couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage in what will be the largest and most epic production ever staged at the Miracle Theatre.

It will feature three original choreographies by Artistic Director Ray Sullivan, with music by New York composer Kevin Keller: Shadow Light, Not in My Name and the WORLD PREMIERE of Luz x 3. The evening will highlight the collaboration between Choreographer and Composer, and take you on a journey through three performances. The lyrical choreography of Shadow Light explores shadow and light through movement, Not in My Name sheds light on the unconquerable human spirit and Luz x 3 examines the abstract path that light illuminates, as it intertwines with the captivating movements of MCDC’s stellar dancers. All costumes were designed by internationally acclaimed designer, Jorge Gallardo and light design by the renowned Carla Iparraguirre.
