Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood will celebrate a Domino Tournament – “Celebrando el Doble Seis”. The cost per player will be $10. RSVP for participation is required by sending an email to natasha@jimmyzkitchen.com.

Chef Jimmy Carey recently announced the second annual Domino Tournament – Celebrando el Doble Seis – to be held at Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood. The Puerto Rican tradition of playing “double six” dominoes will be honored during the tournament. “We have always strived to bring back the Puerto Rican traditions to Wynwood – known as Little San Juan for its original population of Puerto Ricans. We started the Noches de Bomba y Plena which have been a great success and for the second year we are hosting a domino tournament of “double six” – the way it’s played in Puerto Rico.” commented Carey.

For the tournament, Chef Jimmy has invited his friends, and owners of Wynwood Brewing Co, Luis and “Pops” Brignoni to serve, for the first time, two of the brewery’s beers. The Brignonis, originally from Puerto Rico, are also great supporters of keeping alive the Puerto Rican traditions of Wynwood.

Named as “Best of Miami” for its Puerto Rican Mofongo, Jimmy’z Kitchen has been known for its casual and contemporary atmosphere and for fun gatherings in the plaza in front of the restaurant.

Participation in the tournament costs $10 per person but the restaurant encourages friends and family to come and cheer the participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top four players.

RSVP is required for participation at natasha@jimmyzkitchen.com. For further information please contact NataschaOS@nos-communications.com.

Our city is in an exciting moment of growth and evolution. The conversation about Miami’s future has never been more active, but we’re not yet having it together, as one community. Many groups are locked in silos or feel left out of the wave of innovation and creative energy surging through the city. To build a vibrant and successful place, we need the perspective and participation of all people who live here—the rich and the not-rich, the young and the not-young, the urban and the rural; Miamians of every race, creed, background and experience.

How can we work together to ensure that all of our neighbors have a hand in shaping our collective future? Join us for a 1.5 day creative workshop on Aug 1-2 at The LAB Miami.

On the evening of Friday, Aug 1, we’ll host an opening kick-off reception in which we will lay the groundwork for the workshop the following day. Miamians of many backgrounds—from taxi drivers to youth—will creatively present stories to illustrate their lived experiences surviving in Miami’s current economic and social landscape. We will come back on Saturday, Aug 2 for a day of discussion and creativity as we work in small groups across disciplines—design, law, art, activism, technology, social enterprise—to generate concrete ideas responding to those challenges in order to make Miami’s future more inclusive.
People from every place, expertise and experience are invited to attend (writ: design thinkers, social entrepreneurs, artists, technologists, lawyers, community members excited to ideate!). The kickoff and workshop are free and food and drink will be served. Register here and indicate your background to be place on a team today!

See you then!

Fordistas is pleased to present Materia Prima, a collaborative exhibition by Argentine artists Pastel and Elian at the Yo♥305 Gallery in Wynwood. The Opening Night reception is slated for Thursday July 10, 2014.

In Materia Prima, Pastel and Elian explore the true meaning of collaboration by using individual aesthetics to find points of intersection in their work. While Pastel uses symbolism to tell the story of a 19th century battle and its socio-political tensions, Elian explores the geometric properties of art by analyzing form through the use of primary colors and space.

By definition, “materia prima” are raw elements taken from nature that are later transformed into consumer goods.

“With elements I talk about stories and I talk about cultures.” – Pastel

During the joint exhibition, a special, limited-edition quantity of hand printed scarves by the artists will be made available for purchase. Ranging from $40-$100 (at buyer’s discretion), the complete proceeds will benefit a South Florida Ford linked charitable cause.

Resilience is that ineffable quality that allows some people to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes. Psychologists have identified some of the factors that make someone resilient, among them a positive attitude, optimism, the ability to regulate emotions, and the ability to see failure as a form of helpful feedback. Even after a misfortune, blessed with such an outlook, resilient people are able to change course and soldier on.

The physicality of sound is ephemeral. After sounds are made they exist only in our minds sonic library. In “Remembered Sounds” the Brooklyn-based violinist Andie Springer and the composer Erik DeLuca will explore musical concepts of memory, subjectivity, and decay through a variety of works for violin and electronics. The event will further feature the 2014 Elliot Carter Rome Prize winner Paula Matthusen in her “All Lengths in between Perhaps” for reel to reel and live electronics.

9am-5pm: HACK: A Bike Sharing System Hackathon
3-6pm: MAKE: A Bike Accessory Make-a-thon
6-9pm: DRANK: A Celebration & Bike Fleet Reveal

Bike on over, hack out a bike share program, make bike accessories with a 3D printer and then finish it all off with a drink! Sound like an obscure itinerary for a Saturday? Not to the folks at The LAB Miami and Republic Bike. Wynwood tech hub, The LAB Miami, will host BIKE / HACK / MAKE / DRANK, a three-part launch event for its new, shared Republic Bike fleet. The custom bikes, branded for program sponsors TigerDirect and MIAMade, will be made available as an added amenity to the entrepreneurial members of The LAB Miami.

As Miami’s most talked about breeding place for innovation and progressive startups, The LAB Miami is centrally-located in Miami’s budding Wynwood neighborhood, an up-and-coming area that still lacks a sense of pedestrian permeability. The area’s hot spots are still significantly spread out; therefore, Miami-based tech retail giant TigerDirect and local maker organization MIAMade came together to provide a sustainable transportation solution for the members of The LAB, the burgeoning creative campus that continues to propel Miami into the international tech spotlight. Republic Bike lent their expertise in developing innovative bike sharing solutions to put together a unique program for The Lab.

To launch The Labs bike program, Republic Bike decided to host the event BIKE / HACK / MAKE / DRANK, at The LAB Miami in an effort to raise awareness for the new program and to spread the word about the importance, convenience and joy of transportation alternatives.

Guests and participants are invited to bike on over at 12pm in time for the festivities to begin! The first part of the event will consist of a Hackathon where teams of two will compete to create a modified mechanism for the functionality of The LAB’s bike sharing system. The team with the most logical, innovative and easy-to-use modification will win a prize provided by TigerDirect and Republic Bike.

The MAKE part of the event will consist of a two-hour Make-a-thon with a bicycle twist, led by MIAMade. This special maker event will bring Miami’s maker community together to create and showcase a plethora of eclectic bicycle accessories with electronics, robotics, 3D printers and other popular maker apparatuses.

To wrap up the three-part launch, the DRANK portion will coincide with Second Saturday’s Art Walk. Stolen Spiced Rum cocktails and Duvel beer will be served to the public, as the official Republic Bike fleet of The LAB Miami will be revealed. All locals are invited to stop by and test out the new LAB bikes!

Wynwood Brewing Co. Starts Artist’s Showcase with Works by Ernesto Kunde 6/14/14

Wynwood Brewing Co. Starts Artist’s Showcase with Works by Ernesto Kunde
THE VAGABONDSaturday, June 14, 2014 at 5 pm.
The WBCo. Tap Room
565 NW 24th Street
Wynwood Art District, Miami, FL

The Wynwood Brewing Company recently announced plans to start a rotating monthly Artist’s Showcase at its Tap Room. The WBCo. will feature solo-exhibitions of renowned local artists. The first show will be dedicated to the art of Ernesto Kunde and will open during the June Wynwood Art Walk.

Since it’s opening in September 2013, the Wynwood Brewing Company has been known for its support of the local art scene. Its Tap Room and brewery are a mini gallery of Miami’s best known street artists like TrekSix, CP1, Krave Art, Eva Ruiz, Kazilla, Ruben Ubiera, and Ernesto Kunde. The mural by Kunde, located above the Tap Room bar, is part of the artist’s “Miami Series” and shows the street sign of I-95 going towards Miami Beach. Continuing with the tradition already started with this mural, Ernesto will be showcasing paintings from the “Miami Series” on the WBCo’s Tap Room walls.

“My Miami series is inspired by the vibrant and unique Deco architecture and by the daily rhythms of the city. When I first moved to Miami 8 years ago, I saw changes coming rapidly. Many of the old buildings were being torn down or remodeled. My goal in this series has been to preserve a bit of history while at the same time offering tribute to this exciting city in which we live.” – Kunde explained.

The father and son team – Luis and “Pops” Brignoni – couldn’t be happier about starting this art series in the Tap Room.

“We envision a monthly show with renowned local artists in order to showcase and promote their work. Our vision for the Tap Room and the Brewery has always been to be an extension of the artistic atmosphere of the Wynwood Arts District. From our tap handles to our walls we are inspired everyday to create our beers like works of art.”

As part of the exhibition, the artists will be asked to create a WBCo “tap handle” that will be a signature art piece to be kept in the tap room. The idea is to create a collection of “Handmade in Miami” tap handles that could be later exhibited as a group.

On Saturday, June 14th the WBCo. will also tap a special cask in honor of the opening. An oak-aged Father Francisco with key lime craft will be served for the first time.

Ernesto Kunde’s “Miami Series” will be on exhibit at the Wynwood Brewing Co. Tap Room from Saturday, June 14 through Sunday, July 6, 2014. The Wynwood Brewing is located at 565 NW 24th Street, Miami, FL. Hours of Operation are Tues -Thur 2 – 11 pm, Fri. 2 pm – midnight, Sat. 12 pm – midnight, Sun. 12 pm – 10 pm.

Plop, bang, puff, squeak, trash! Everyday objects and their sonic expressions as evidenced in the popular and experimental music cultures become alive in a new electronic music set, sound installation and happening by the Brooklyn-based Swede Adrian Knight and the Slovakian-Miamian Juraj Kojs. Lucid streams of musical bubbles and clouds will pulsate into dadaist trashness, filled with nostalgia and humor. Not to be missed on the night that marks 115 years since the “American Temperance crusader Carrie Nation began her campaign of vandalizing alcohol-serving establishments by destroying the inventory in a saloon in Kiowa, Kansas” (wiki).

You And I Are Love X Rise Up Gallery presents :
“Late Bloomers”, by Yuhmi Collection

Closing Reception: May 30, Friday.
Time: 7-10pm

You are invited to join us for a talk with the Miami native art duo about their journey as artists and their works.
The forum will be open for a Q&A afterwards.

“A journey into the evolution of a Miami native art duo. Their characters are fragments of their life, portraits of distant memories. Inspired by the idea of culture and its everlasting impression.”

Opening Reception : May 8th, 2014 6pm-11pm
Exhibit Dates : May 8th – May 30th, 2014

We are Yuhmi (Yuh + Mi), Michelle Vazquez and Victor Vazquez a Miami native art duo. We started collaborating in 2009 on design based work, and in 2012 officially became an art duo. We specialize in painting illustrations, murals, installations, and toy designs.

Our characters are an ode to our life. A collaborative unified vision. A continuos narrative inspired by all of our memories, dreams and culture. Traditional and popular culture alike.

We paint portraits of people and animals, sometimes creating super human hybrid creatures by mashing them together. We like to think of them as our spirit animals.

Let your imagination run wild & journey into our floating world.

“The wishy washy world of beautiful human creatures. Peaceful sea of fantastical beings, where the ocean has no end and the world is shaped eternally.”

Fordistas is pleased to present a new exhibition, “Newspeak,” by Puerto Rican artist JUFE at the Yo <3 305 Gallery in Wynwood. JUFE’s latest exhibition, ‘Newspeak’, sets out to explore the short-form language that is quickly redefining how we communicate one pixel at a time: Emoji.

Drawing inspiration from the fictional short-form language created by the totalitarian state in George Orwell’s novel 1984, JUFE’s ‘Newspeak’ focuses on the benefits of today’s widespread use of Emoji as a short-form communication. To JUFE, Emoji’s have increased our ability to express universal emotions otherwise difficult to articulate through syllables.

“Emoji’s are more open. They help us break down existing language barriers,” explains JUFE, who chose to capture 20 of his most used Emoji’s on canvas.

During his solo exhibition, a series of limited edition signed prints will be made available for purchase ranging from $20-$100, the complete proceeds of which will benefit Salute to Education (www.stescholarships.org).

About Fordistas

The Fordistas program is a platform for emerging arts + culture powered by South Florida Ford. Following the success of the 2013 Art Basel exhibition Friends and Family, street artists Axel Void, 2ALAS, Jufe, Pastel, Jaz, 2501 and Alexis Diaz, will be provided with a year-long residency through which Fordistas will make available living quarters, materials, the opportunity to feature their work in solo Art Walk exhibitions as well as to develop their work within a talent space where the local meets the global in order to demonstrate South Florida’s influence upon their work and vice versa.

The Fordistas Residency Program will culminate during Art Basel 2014 for a final exhibition that will document the process of these artists brought together by the collective in order to showcase not only how their work is affected by the city and, in turn, how the city affects their creative expression but also how relationships inform and transform artistic production.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Organizers of Wynwood Life couldn’t be happier. The street festival that promised to fill the street of Wynwood’s 6th Avenue with art and music lovers drew close to 18,000 people over the course of three days. Wynwood Life street fest over-delivered on what it promised in the areas of art, music, fashion and fun! “Lots of cool people. Lots of great vibe. Art was created, showed and sold. Music was danced to and fashion was strutted. We were proud to have Trek6 involved as our first poster artists. Wynwood Life is here to stay, and we hope to see everyone back next year,” said Tony Albelo, Wynwood Life organizer.

In the spirit of showcasing local talent, the festival featured Miami style bloggers, who turned heads during their own fashion show hosted by Kelly Saks. On Saturday night, the Peroni Art & Fashion Stage featured a bathing suit fashion show hosted by Annie Vazquez. Sunday night’s show was put on by Style Mafia, Jane Rose and Miami fashion blogger Maya King.

People came from all over South Florida to see the 11 live art displays curated by WynwoodMap.com, which featured graffiti artists including Gons One w/ SSK, Luis Berros, Diana Contreras and Luis Valle. What they got was all 11 plus a bonus live art display from DeepInPaint body painter, Shannon De Freitas.

Baloji, the Congolese-Belgium hip hop artists, who performed on Friday night, was a total hit, with thousands of new fans jamming to his contagious rhythm. It was standing room only on Saturday night with Problem Kids rocking the house, and on Sunday, Suénalo brought their fan base with their eclectic hip hop, Spanish infused vibe to the stage.

To close the festival, Wynwood Life had a music and art mashup that featured DJ Mr. Pauer, Miami’s Latin Grammy® nominated artist/producer, on stage while graffiti artist Hec One Love painted in front of the stage to the beat of his music. Hec One Love is well known for collaborating with Trek6 on the mural “Lovism”. Meanwhile over at the Peroni Art & Fashion stage, an impromptu collaborative painting took place between Kazilla and Coinslot, making this festival an eye-catching experience.

What started out as a blog that celebrated life in the Wynwood neighborhood, has organically evolved into a festival that’s poised to raise the bar on all the things that Miami loves –art, music, fashion and food! Wynwood Life will take place in the hip Wynwood district on 6th Avenue, between 22nd and 24th Streets, from April 25th-27th.

Trek6, the celebrated artist who has become synonymous with the area one wall at a time, will commemorate the festival by designing and painting the inaugural poster and wall. “The walls of Wynwood are intrinsic to this community, which is why we wanted to build a wall specifically for Trek6 to paint. That finished wall will be taken apart, brick by brick, and the first 350 posters will come with one of the numbered bricks from that one-of-a-kind work of art,” said Tony Albelo, festival organizer. The idea behind this festival stemmed from the need to give local artists, craftsmen and designers the representation that they deserved by giving them a platform to showcase their creations.

Organizers expect thousands of people over the course of the three-day event. Top area vendors and artists, many of whom have been in some of Miami’s most respected graffiti crews, have signed up to be a part of this event, which will offer art, crafts, jewelry, fashion and food.

Kicking off the musical line-up on Friday night will be Congolese-Belgian hip-hop artist Baloji, who was brought to Miami and the Festival by MDC Live Arts. Other bands and Djs are scheduled to perform from one of two stages throughout the weekend. Ticket holders have the option of buying a VIP ticket, which would give them access to the Blue Moon VIP Lounge – an oasis in the festival with lounge seating and VIP view of the main musical stage. The Peroni Fashion Runway will feature several Miami stylists and bloggers showcasing “festival fashion” on Friday and Sunday night. On Saturday, the Peroni Art & Fashion Runway Show will take over, and guests can stroll into the Peroni Style Lounge to talk one-on-one with fashion experts.

In addition, Wynwood area restaurants will be on hand to sell their fare throughout the entire weekend.

You And I Are Love Mission: “You And I Are Love is an emerging organization that caters to the local Miami art community and working towards spreading our work globally. Our mission is to give back through the power of art. Seeking emerging, talented artists in our community and giving them a platform to exhibit, sell, express their artistic, civic and educational abilities. Our commitment is to create a monthly art show for the local artist to exhibit their art work without charging them a fee and not taking commission from the art sold at our shows, aid in their involvement and bring an enjoyable art experience to our community. We are also working towards creating a positive outlet for children and adults through art therapy and art workshops—to hospitals, schools, cultural art centers and events. We believe love and art set the spirit free and bring us together as one human family because, you and I are love. Join us, together we can spread love through art.”

Oxenberg Fine Art Grand Re-Opening Reception
Inaugural Gallery Solo Show: Maggie Génova-Cordoví “Soirée”

Oxenberg Fine Art is excited and proud to announce it will re-open its gallery doors. The gallery has moved to vibrant Wynwood Art District. The grand opening reception will feature Cuban-born artist Maggie Génova-Cordoví. Oxenberg Fine Art will be hosting a grand opening reception for the artist. The artist will be in attendance.

Artist Statement:
My passion for the Early Renaissance relates to the artists’ uses of profiles to depict these ladies in what they considered a modest and befitting pose; and the fact that these portraits were usually kept wrapped in fabric, and put away only to be viewed by a selective audience. When I work on the Early Italian Renaissance women, it is all about their serene demeanor. I refrain from the use of texture, and they are done as monochromatic drawings using only Indian Ink and a splash of Cuban coffee for color. The coffee is usually used as a symbolic veil that covers the lady, like the cloth on which these portraits were wrapped during the 1400s.

In the case of the Spanish Baroque ladies, their cage-like costumes, so befitting of the roles of women during this time, provoke me. In those paintings I tend to exaggerate their attire and cage-like effect of both their hair and dresses and often get carried away with their stories. I use tremendous amounts of texture and color to execute these paintings.

The commute is one of few things in life that every single one of us experiences. It might be by car a hundred miles across the region, or a ride on the rail, or by bike or on foot or just across the house to a laptop— but we all have to get to work, and most of us spend an unfortunately large amount of time doing it. There’s a lot we can do in the long term to improve how we get around, but in the short term most of us can’t change how long it takes. So instead, we’re asking: How might we create more delightful moments during our commutes?

Join us for a community discussion and brainstorming session at Miami Light Project in Wynwood. We’ll hear from some fellow locals about their commute experiences, hear two experts share examples from other cities, and work together in small groups to create innovative ideas for making our commutes more awesome and enjoyable.

Best of all, we’re putting $3,000 on the table to make the best ideas happen (thanks to Miami Foundation and Knight Foundation).

Food, drink and excellent live music from Avocado Estate will be served.

Doors at 5:30pm. Discussion and Brainstorm 6:00pm-8:00pm.

veritagemiamiVeritageMiami brings together more than 4,000 wine and food lovers for four days of culinary indulgence. Since its inception, VeritageMiami has raised more than $12 million for the community. All proceeds support United Way of Miami Dade’s work in education, financial stability and health.

VeritageMiami is proud to announce its presenting sponsor City National Bank and that five of Miami’s most talented chefs will headline its signature Interactive Dinner on April 11, at the InterContinental Miami. Considered one of the year’s most unique culinary experiences, guests will team up and cook a five-course meal under the tutelage of the distinguished chefs, recently deemed Miami’s culinary “New Guard” by INDULGE Magazine: Alberto Cabrera of Bread + Butter, Todd Erickson of HaVen South Beach, José Mendín of The Pubbelly Restaurant Group, Giorgio Rapicavoli of Eating House and César Zapata of The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions. The chefs will bring their unique flavors and backgrounds as they guide guests in preparing the different courses, with Johnson & Wales culinary students serving as sous chefs and sommeliers. All proceeds benefit United Way of Miami-Dade.

“City National Bank is committed to giving back to the communities we serve, and United Way – because of its sustainable impact in the areas of education, healthy and financial stability – is the centerpiece of our efforts,” City National Bank President and CEO Jorge Gonzalez said. “As a community bank it is also great to support a festival that celebrates South Florida’s burgeoning food scene and these talented young chefs who have been hailed as the city’s new culinary guard.”

Alberto Cabrera is the executive chef of Bread + Butter in Coral Gables, where the Miami native embraces his Cuban-American roots – taking traditional dishes and revamping them by adding a modern spin, such as his Chicharron De Puerco with a truffle-black bean puree. Cabrera learned the art of cooking as he moved up the ranks at notable kitchens including Robbin Haas’ Chispa and the Miami extension of Madrid’s La Broche. At Bread + Butter, Cabrera infuses the carefree charm of Cuba’s mambo era with the modish slant of the modern American gastropub.
Todd Erickson is the executive chef of HaVen South Beach on Lincoln Road, a futuristic electric lounge offering innovative cocktails and some of the most refined food in the city. At HaVen, Erickson takes local, organic ingredients and transforms them into a variety of global small plates from crudos to duck sliders. Erickson got his culinary start at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and from there went on to open a catering company and three four-star restaurants in Dallas, Texas. After having such a successful start with HaVen, Erickson and the Haven Hospitality Group opened Huahua’s Taqueria just down the street. Erickson has also announced HaVen will be expanding this spring to include a full dinner menu.

José Mendín is the director of culinary operations for The Pubbelly Restaurant Group, the team who many Miami foodies credit for the local chef movement. Mendín, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, worked for many well-known restaurants including Nobu and Sushi Samba, before opening Pubbelly Gastropub in Miami Beach with his Pubbelly Group partners Andreas Schreiner and Sergio Navarro. Since then, the Pubbelly Group has experienced incredible success and has expanded to include four more restaurants – PB Steak, Pubbelly Sushi, Barceloneta and the newest, L’Echon Brasserie. In 2012 and again this year, Mendín was distinguished as a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef South, and most recently won Miami Cochon 555, a regional all-out pork cooking frenzy, and will compete in the Grand Cochon competition this summer.

Giorgio Rapicavoli is the executive chef of Eating House, the innovative pop-up restaurant turned Coral Gables mainstay. Rapicavoli burst onto the Miami food scene when he became the first Miami chef to win Food Network’s “Chopped” television competition. After winning the competition and $10,000 prize, Rapicavoli and business partner Alex Cassanova opened the Eating House pop-up. The venture was so successful that Eating House eventually opened as a full-time establishment at its original location in Coral Gables. In 2013, Rapicavoli was distinguished as a James Beard Award Rising Star chef semifinalist. Rapicavoli is also nominated for Culinary Innovator in this year’s ZESTtm Awards at Johnson & Wales University.

César Zapata is known as the “Stove Master and Pig Whisperer” of The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions. Before opening The Federal, Zapata changed the way South Floridians thought about food by opening Miami’s first pop-up restaurant, Phuc Yea!, in 2011. After its widespread success, Zapata and his business partner/wife Aniece Meinhold opened The Federal on Biscayne Boulevard. Since opening, The Federal has received praise from major publications such as Food & Wine Magazine and USA Today. As their next venture, Zapata and Meinhold are in the process of relaunching “Phuc Yea!” in a permanent location.

To celebrate its seventh year and immense growth, SSF has prepared a full-on global assault and is taking the Showcase worldwide for the very first time. With the launch of Spoken Soul TV on the Festival’s website, the performances of this year’s SSF featured artists, including two DJs, an MC, three poets, a harp player, and three vocalists, as well as the works of the featured photographers, filmmakers, and visual artists, will be broadcasted to a bigger audience than ever before through a live, online broadcast. And Spoken Soul TV won’t stop there – you can continue to watch other SSF alumni events all year round, including interviews and panel discussions on marketing and other topics helpful to women artists around the world. The enhanced website will also offer several new features, including SSF Featured Artists, an archive of all the female artists who have participated in years past; the SWAN Sister Series, where SSF alumni can post about upcoming exhibits and events; the Spoken Soul Blog, an interactive space where artists, alumni, partners, and sponsors will be able to share exciting news; and Spoken Soul Radio, playing featured SSF singers and DJs. The SWAN Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 7: SWAN Day Miami, will be an unparalleled and truly HER-storic event – a live arts festival that the entire world can attend.

Wynwood Night Time Graffiti Tour

I recently went to an event in Wynwood thrown by Goose Island Beer Company. After it was over, Ed Roberts and I walked over to Wynwood Brewing for a beer (and back). I took a lot of pictures of the graffiti since I had never been in the area before. I know, I’m probably the first person to post a bunch of these pictures, right?

-Interview with special guest “Cocaine Cowboys” director Billy Corben
-Music by Telekinetic Walrus frontman TIME ZOOKEEPER
-Comedian panel “solving” Miami’s issues featuring Ricky Cruz, Jessica
Gross, and John Vargas
-Editorial from writer and “Deco” author J.J. Colagrande
-Sketches, stand-up, sorpresas

The host and creator is comedian Daniel Reskin, a local native who believes that Miami is more than just sports, butts, and court cases (but is game for all the comic fodder they provide). Along with a team of other South Florida comics, the goal is to make you laugh about matters that matter to Miami.

Dinner Lab Miami Now Open for Adventurous Foodies

Dining in a Boxing Gym

Dinner-Lab-Miami-06

There is a severe crisis afflicting the affluent and dedicated foodies of our country — they are running out of new places to eat!! Fear not, because the Dinner Lab has opened and has now come to Miami to alleviate this existential catastrophe.

“The Dinner Lab is a membership-based social dining experiment that unites undiscovered chefs with adventurous diners who are looking for something different from the traditional restaurant experience. Whether it happens on the roof of an abandoned building, the floor of a paper mill, or inside a motorcycle dealership….Our events bring together a group of interesting strangers around a common table to share cuisine crafted by up-and-coming chefs from all over the country. We don’t dictate what our chefs cook, but instead give them a platform to tell a story through the menu – recipes that speak to their background or heritage, ingredients they are passionate about, or completely new dishes they have been experimenting with on days away from the restaurant.”

Dinner-Lab-Miami-04

We adore this idea and were very excited to try it. After all, an open mind and adventurous spirit are the keys to discovering new delicacies. We embarked upon our Lab experience on Valentine’s Night for the “Tough Love” themed dinner at Matt Baiamonte’s Boxing Clubin Wynwood. It was quite interesting to dine and imbibe in a locale where people usually shed blood, sweat and tears considering those juices are usually reserved for restaurant kitchens. Thankfully, the intoxicating scent of BO (Body Odor) was not present, replaced instead with the mouth-watering aromas of the fare being prepared. The lab has a 30 minute cocktail hour preceding dinner where, wine, beer, and mixed drinks were graciously served. The ginger beer and rum concoctions were quite tasty.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-07

There were about seven tables for our time slot filled with food-loving strangers to choose from. We were astutely drawn to the one with a fabulous gay and lesbian couple. There is something tantalizing about dining with strangers who share your bravery and openness. It turned out to be tremendously fun. The meal opened with a several little treats served one by one including a great baked pear with a mysterious curry cream, a crostini with tomato and basil and a superbly seasoned oyster.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-11

First course - Grilled Cremini with toasted goat cheese gnudi and bechamel. This dish emitted a magnificent saliva inducing scent. Gnudi made with ricotta and a bit of flour leaving behind a dumpling also known as “naked ravioli“ ravioli filling without the pasta resulting in a dumpling-like delight. If you like gnocchi, chances are you’ll be a fan of gnudi, too.  The cremini mushrooms (immature portabella mushrooms) were succulent and had a deep decadent taste that balanced well with fluffy lightness of the the goat cheese gnudi.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-14

Second course – Cuttlefish Carbonara with bacon, scallion, Parmesan foam and quail eggs. This was a truly creatively delicious spin on carbonara. The flavor was sublime and the mix of the crunchy bacon and Parmesan foam with quail egg created a savory orgy of textures thats were a joy to swirl in your mouth. It was tongues down the paramount dish of the night.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-19

Third course - Confit Hanger with sweet potato carrot puree, and roast pepper relish. This dish had a lot of potential, but fell flat on its face like a boxer facing Mohammed Ali in his prime. The steak was ridiculously well done with a spicy and sweet potato carrot purée that left the palate confused.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-24

Fourth course – Gallette De Cochon with pork galce, cauliflower purée and poached mustard seeds.  The crispy crust pulled pork with stellar cauliflower puree was pretty delicious. The cauliflower puree was so smooth, you couldn’t believe it wasn’t potato.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-28

Fifth course – Truffle Duo with hazelnut, almond, white chocolate truffle, raspberry sorbet, shortbread cookie and dark chocolate ganache. This dessert plate was split in two with marvelous on one side and dessert confusion on the other. The white truffle ball over the dark chocolate ganache was sublime. We could have eaten a baker’s dozen of them. Unfortunately, the overtly sour and harsh raspberry sorbet created havoc on the plate. It was so heinously tart and overpowering that we were uttelry bewildered about its plate presence. Thankfully, it was quarantined to one side so it did not contaminate the delectable truffle ball.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-36

The motto of the Lab is “consistently inconsistent,” so some meals may be phenom and others not so much. While ours fell a little short of phenom, we still loved the experience and enjoyed trying these experimental dishes. We had an amazing time eating and drinking brand new food with cool, fun and hilarious strangers. We will gladly be a chef’s guinea pig again at the Dinner Lab again.

South Florida moms prepare for the first Mom’s Night Out event. Mom’s Night Out (MNO) is an event dedicated to all mothers throughout South Florida. All women are invited to attend to shop special promotions from participating fine retailers while enjoying sips, snacks, a free beauty bar, dancing and giveaways.

MNO began late last year when two long time friends came together. After creating several events branded for other companies, they decided it was time to create an event honoring South Florida’s thriving community of mothers. Jessica Prieto, Founder of Mom’s Night Out and mother to a 19 month old, had a vision to create an event that would allow moms to bond, reward themselves and be pampered all while celebrating their hard work and efforts within an upscale happy hour atmosphere.

“Between diaper changes, work, dirty dishes, mommy & me classes, laundry, and everything else, I barely have time to sit down, much less spend time with my girl friends. Moms need, and most importantly, deserve a break. That’s what Mom’s Night Out is all about,” explains Jessica Prieto. “We bring the shopping to you, with stores like Wacoal, Benii Boutique and La Belle Mobile Boutique. You can get pampered for free by Mary Kay, Nail Bar & Lounge and Blo Blow Dry Bar. We will also be giving away some great prizes, including our grand prize provided by Juno Lucina. I want all moms to put on their sexy heels, shop, dance and have fun!” said Jessica.

Additional event sponsors include Frost Shot, Baby Signs, Thirty One, Origami Owl, ItWorks, All Over U Soaps & More, Paparazzi, Body By VI, Ricardo Amar Photography, DeliverLean, Dr. Vanessa Marino, Ready Freddie Studios, Heather Lopez Enterprises and Baby Tots Den.

Mom’s Night Out Event is a Soul Of Miami sponsor.

Trek six will be raffling off an original 3ft x 4ft piece during art walk saturday!

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to have work by a Miami legend!

“Odds & Ends is a collection of works that although were not design to function as a complete body of work do show a linear form of thought and ideas in transition. Many times when an artist is creating they go through many trials and errors before achieving the style or aesthetic they want , this body of work presents old pieces, new pieces and works that haven’t seen too much light but clearly show a path from point A to point B. Most of the work will be aerosol but there are some pieces that showcase acrylics along side their spraycan counter parts to create an atmosphere that is colorful, surreal, and curious with lines , geometry and experimentation.”

It was all about the Margaritas to celebrate National Margarita Day with El Jimador Tequila by Betty Alvarez

El Jimador Tequila was proud to represent National Margarita Day on February 22 with the final event of a two week long competition that took place at the Wynwood hotspot known as The Social Lubricant Lounge.

Five Mixologists from five of South Florida’s most well-known venues battled it out at the Social Lubricant Lounge to find out who made Miami’s best Spicy Margarita!

The Five South Florida locations and their head mixologists include:
-TWIST represented by Nathan Smith,
-Baires Grill represented by Plamen Atanasov,
-The Social Lubricant Lounge represented by Ronaldo Shehadeh,
-Tarpon Bend represented by Christopher Garcia,
-TequiztLan Mexican Restaurant represented by Stephanie Ortiz.

The finale event served to engage with consumers in a unique way that encourages them to enjoy el Jimador in a truly dynamic array of settings. DJ Miik presided over the turntables as guests got a Mixology Lesson where they learned how to make simple cocktails which can be easily reproduced in the comfort of their home or when out on the town. During this experience, they literally poured, shaked, and served up their very own take on the perfect el Jimador Margarita!

Adding to the fun, guests were part of different stations to include the “Shake and Bite,” “Mixology Lab,” and “Social Mixology Demo” where once they’ve learned to make a delicious cocktail, they presented it via a brief digital video that they can quickly post to their social media platform. Immediately, they were able to share their personal recipe with friends and followers. The grand finale of the event was the announcement of the winner of the best el Jimador Spicy Margarita in South Florida!

Admission is free and open to the public.

The University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Leah Brown at University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building.

Borderland is a dreamlike, sculptural installation with sound where the exhibition is presented as both a metaphor for the unconscious mind and as an experience of an alternate reality where the viewer assumes the roles of actor and audience. Here, radially oriented objects appear to be simultaneously human, animal, and landscape.  The gallery walls are presented as a space becoming conscious of itself, personified as an oversized figure achieving lucidity. The audio in the space is a recording of Brown’s voice orating an automatic text created within the gallery as part of her process of inhabiting the realm between conscious and unconscious states.

Leah Brown is a sculptor and installation artist, whose object-oriented work questions the hierarchical structures imposed on reality. Brown was born in Washington DC, raised in the mountains of North Carolina, and currently lives and works in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She received her BFA with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design, and is an MFA Candidate in Sculpture from the University of Miami. In 2013 she received the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship.  In addition to her studio practice, Leah is co-curator of the FATVillage Arts District in Ft Lauderdale, FL, where she oversees the curation of the FATVillage Projects Contemporary Art Space.

“RIDING THE SUN”

BlinkGroup Gallery is proud to be representing rising street artist Kazilla in her exhibition “RIDING THE SUN” at the Wynwood Exhibition Center in Cafeina. Kazilla brings amazing sophistication to the table when it comes to her skillfully executed artwork. An unexpected and fast paced dart to the stars. “RIDING THE SUN”, displays a retrospective in light / color / nature / beauty. Looking back on the power of creation while moving forward in the path of destruction. Join us for the closing reception Friday, February 28th from 7-10 PM.

Kazilla’s work speaks of dreams versus reality. Each finely rendered piece encompasses a different message to all who gaze upon their elegant beauty. These visually eloquent pieces of work are to be admired for their craft, and imagery. Harmonic relationships between people and nature are successfully achieved through an abundance of symbolism, a flourish of colors, and a visual language or energy extended through every piece. Please join us for an amazing, unique opportunity to witness a clash of fierceness and beauty.

Kazilla’s exhibition is partnered with Blink Group, (A marketing firm for visual artists). Hosted by Alexandra Novaro, co-founder of BlinkGroup. For more information regarding “RIDING THE SUN” exhibition, contact Alexandra Novaro at Alexandra@Blinkgroup.net. Or visit BlinkGroup.net.

Marina Font:  Dark Continents
February 6 – March 29, 2014

Dina Mitrani Gallery is proud to present Marina Font’s third solo exhibition in the gallery. Her newest series consists of photo-based, mixed media works that exemplify the artist’s continued exploration of the issues of gender, identity, and the woman’s body with all its shapes, forms, cycles and capacity.  Having grown up in Argentina, a patriarchal society that placed much importance on psychoanalysis, Font learned that “Dark Continents” was how Sigmund Freud described female sexuality.  This exhibition, which includes small and large format pieces as well as installations, illustrates the many facets, scientific and emotional, of women.

Font’s photographs of the woman’s physique are printed on poly-cotton and then embroidered with thread and yarn in symbolic patterns and mounted on wooden surfaces.  At times, Font uses found objects such as doilies and buttons to represent the traditional roles of women in the home. The laborious manual application of fabrics and embroidery represent the artist’s expression of her emotional experiences.  There are various works that are a series of photographs, or installations that refer to a woman’s cycles of fertility and how the biological phases are in constant shifting evolution. In her statement, Font writes, “Through this body of work, I am interested in unveiling metaphorically the truth beneath our surface, deeper than the external body, exploring and re-tracing what was once felt by it, as well as the complex relationship between reality and the memory that lives within.”

Marina Font was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1970. She studied at the Escuela de Artes Visuales Martin A. Malharro, Argentina. She spent the summer of 1998 studying photography at Speos Ecole de la Photographie in Paris, and earned her MFA in Photography from Barry University, Miami in 2009.  She recently had solo exhibitions at The Consulate of Argentina in New York, The Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami and at Gato Gallery, Barry University. She has participated in group shows at The BOCA Museum of Art, The MoCA, North Miami, The Appleton Museum, Ocala, the Museum of Florida Arts, Deland and the Miami Center for the Photographic Arts. She was recently invited to participate in a Night at the Museum at The Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Spring Fling at Locust Projects and Abracadabra at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, FL. Her work is included in the Bunnen Collection, Atlanta, The Girl’s Club Collection, Ft. Lauderdale, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami and various important private collections.

Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, offers artists talks and lectures as well as photo-based objects and books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions.

On View February 14-18

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to announce HYPNOTIC, a pop-up exhibition in Miami by renowned contemporary urban artist Speedy Graphito, February 14 – 18. The exhibition is co-organized by FAAM, Fine Art Auctions Miami, the leading fine art auction house in Florida since 2011. This exhibition is part of a series of events organized in conjunction with FAAM’s major Street Art auction on February 18. HYPNOTIC is also being presented in partnership with  SANDOW, which builds innovative, design-driven brands and businesses across luxury, design and beauty. The host of this exhibition, SANDOW’s Chairman and CEO Adam I. Sandow, has long supported the contemporary art and design communities and has been instrumental in helping to introduce Speedy Graphito’s work in the United States.

HYPNOTIC will feature all new work by Speedy Graphito, works that explore the transformation of images we see in the media and popular culture. The artist has created paintings, sculptures, video installations and more for this exhibition and will perform live during HYPNOTIC’s opening reception. Parallel to HYPNOTIC, Speedy Graphito will be featured at the Art Wynwood art fair on Fabien Castanier Gallery’s booth, Booth #B30. In addition, he will perform live during the VIP opening night of the art fair, February 13th.

For the past three years, Speedy Graphito has developed a strong presence in the U.S., beginning with his first U.S. solo exhibition, Freeway, in Fall 2011 at the Fabien Castanier Gallery. Since then, he has exhibited at numerous major art fairs, including Scope New York, Context Art Miami, and the Los Angeles Art Fair. Speedy Graphito held his second solo exhibition in the U.S., NEWWORLDS, at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in 2013, which garnered international attention. His paintings and sculptures, as well as large-scale installations and murals, have been acquired by private collections across the country and his influence on the American art market continues to grow.

Tuesday, February 11th through Saturday, March 29th, 2014.

Brisky Gallery Miami is proud to present Rendering Thoughts: Sublime interpretations of the mind; an exhibition curated by Luis Valle, Brisky Gallery’s Director.

The exhibit will feature works by over 19 artists both local and international. As Brisky gallery Miami is now in its second year, the portfolio has expanded to include some new faces met during the galleries tenure and Art Basel. Rendering Thoughts is a group exhibit that will showcase some of the galleries’ regular lineup along with some new artist picked up along the way. With an ever growing portfolio Brisky gallery strives to present fresh new work to the Wynwood art scene.

The artists’ mind is a curious enigma, which onlookers ponder. Who, What, Why, Where and How did the artist get to this creation are questions asked by the viewer. Each artist in the show takes a unique approach to manifesting his or her creation. The artist vision first starts as a feeling or a thought, which must then be molded and formed with physical materials in order to be born.

The show will feature a large range of photography as well as many works in painting, sculpture and new media.

For the first time in Wynwood, Miami Light Project and FUNDarte are proud to present the 7th Annual Global Cuba Fest at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, featuring two of contemporary Cuban music’s most energizing performers, Danay Suarez and Dafnis Prieto, February 7-8, 2014

This weekend of diverse Cuban music celebrates the roots of Cuban music and the genre’s funkiest innovations exploring jazz, son montuno, bolero, trova, timba and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Global Cuba Fest kicks off on Friday, February 7, with singer/song writer and rapper Danay Suarez and concludes on Saturday, February 8, with a spectacular performance by Jazz percussionist, Dafnis Prieto.

Rounding out the weekend is a special multimedia interactive exhibition, Far Away, by composer Sage Lewis. Far Away is a video installation about the relationship between the US and Cuba told from the perspective of the youngest generations from both nations. Two virtual children’s choirs, one from Los Angeles and the other from Havana, sing together from across the ocean. The work was designed by artist Sage Lewis who interviewed the National Children’s Chorus (Los Angeles) and Coro Diminuto (Havana) about their thoughts on nationality and friendship. The children’s answers became the libretto that Lewis used to compose a ten-minute a cappella choral work. In the gallery, their images are life-size projections onto hanging scrims that face each other. Only being able to encounter each other through technology and music, the children transcend the political, geographic, and communication barriers that have divided their cultures for over 50 years.

Danay Suárez, self-taught Cuban singer of jazz and hip hop, began her music career through the Cuban rap movement. She could rap “with perfect flow and compelling, conscious lyrics” and she could also sing jazz, soul, reggae, blues, and more, with the same ease. By fusing elements of hip hop with jazz and traditional Cuban music, Danay has been celebrated around the world as an impeccable vocalist and poignant storyteller.

From 2008 until 2010 she was the lead singer of Cuban fusion group X Alfonso, and performed on stages in Panama, Mexico, Germany and Spain, and was featured in a special concert in honor of London’s Royal Ballet, London, at the British Embassy in Cuba. Her collaborations as a Havana Cultura solo artist tours to Europe introduced her to renowned British DJ Gilles Peterson, who, along with Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca, produced her debut CD Danay Suárez, Havana Cultura Sessions, her first foray into the world of jazz, and which gives a new twist to her career by fusing elements of hip hop with jazz and traditional Cuban music. Her follow up CD, CD Polvo de la humedad, is living tribute to the underground musical culture in Cuba, which passes new music by hand to the audiences at live concerts. In 2012, she accompanied British musician, DJ Mala, on a European tour to promote the CD Mala in Cuba and is currently recording her new album Palabras Manuales.

2011 MacArthur “Genius” Dafnis Prieto’s arrival in the U.S. from Cuba has been compared to that of an asteroid hitting New York. A Grammy and Latin Grammy nominee, Dafnis Prieto is easily the most impressive young drummer to come on the jazz scene during the past decade. Possessing awesome virtuosity and astonishing versatility, his compositions are elaborate compositions melding Afro-Cuban rhythms and modern jazz harmonies into music that is ecstatic and intelligent.

A resident of New York since 1999, he has already worked in bands led by Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Chico and Arturo O’Farrill, Dave Samuels & The Caribbean Jazz Project, Jane Bunnett, D.D. Jackson, Edward Simon, Michel Camilo, Chucho Valdez, Claudia Acuña, Roy Hargrove, Don Byron and Andrew Hill, among others. He has performed at many national and international music festivals as a sideman and as bandleader including various of his own projects and music. Since 2005, he has been a member of the NYU Music Faculty.

Dafnis Prieto is the founder of the independent record company Dafnison Music. As a composer, he has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and most notably for his own bands, ranging from duets to his “Small Big Band” and including the distinctively different groups featured by five acclaimed recordings as a leader: About The Monks, Absolute Quintet, Taking The Soul For a Walk, Si o Si Quartet- Live at Jazz Standard, and Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio. He has received new works commissions, grants, and fellowships from Chamber Music America, Jazz at Lincoln Center, East Carolina University, and Meet the Composer.

In 1989 relatively unknown actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter became instant pop culture icons when they starred in BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. Two years later, they returned to the big screen in 1991 with the hugely underrated BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY. It has been 25 years since the theatrical release of the first film and while Keanu and Alex tease us with hints of a possible BILL & TED 3 in the works, Popcorn Nights & O Cinema decided that the existence alone of Bill & Ted is cause for celebration.

The Law of Attraction teaches that you attract into your life people and experiences based on your thoughts. This workshop, led by Relationships 101 author Cary Bayer, shows you how to prepare the way for your soul mate to show up by teaching you first how to fall in love with yourself, the basis for drawing that mate to you.
It then shows you how to let the universe know of your readiness for finding your mate—which is an inner process–then how to best let the world know—which is an outer process that involves the people in your life and the dating services on the Internet.
The workshop also trains you how to become magnetic to others, while teaching you the six steps for securing more good dates with people you’re both attracted to and resonate with, to see if such people might be that soul mate. Finally, it puts you on a clear path to looking for love in all the right places—and, magically, finding it.

Rare is the person who doesn’t have unresolved issues with an ex-spouse, parent, boss, current spouse, deceased parent or ex-boss, for example. People also spend thousands of dollars in therapy trying to resolve these conflicts.
Have you ever noticed that people who resemble the person or people who you’re incomplete with have an uncanny knack for showing up in your life in different guises? That’s no accident. This workshop will provide the theoretical framework to understand the role these people play in your life.
This highly practical workshop also comes equipped with a systematic, three-step Completion Process that frees you of the toxic energy and heavy weight that you’ve been carrying around for all these years. In this class, you’ll make tremendous progress toward finishing the first of these three steps that are vital for your physical, emotional, and financial health, and will enable you to become at peace with anyone you’ve ever known.

Inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles went to an ashram in India, practiced Transcendental Meditation with its founder, and awakened to the Transcendent within them. A number of songs about the higher realities of Life flowed out of them in that meditative peace—songs that helped to spiritually awaken a whole generation. As you hear these songs in class, they may help awaken you, too.
Cary Bayer taught Transcendental Meditation for more than three decades and also trained dozens of its teachers, as well. In 2010, he developed Higher Self Healing Meditation. In this enlightening class, he plays a number of Beatles’ songs that were influenced by their spiritual insights; teaches a cleansing breath meditation that they practiced; and guides you through a mantra meditation that suggests the effortlessness nature of the meditation that the Beatles sang about and that he teaches. He’ll also present an introduction to a simple meditation technique that, in the ancient Vedic tradition, is always transmitted one on one. This meditation could be learned at a later date, and practiced daily for 20 minutes at home to free you of stress twice a day, contact the higher Self regularly, and make the great peace and freedom that results a part of your everyday life.

12 Nights Miami: Music of Judith Shatin
A profile concert of acclaimed composer Judith Shatin (www.judithshatin.com) will feature a mix of acoustic and electroacoustic music performed by some of South Florida’s most outstanding performers. These include Christopher Graham (cello), José Lopez (piano), Aaron Merritt (clarinet) and Laura Wilcox (viola). The music ranges from For The Birds (cello and electronics made from birdsong from Yellowstone) to Cherry Blossom and a Wrapped Thing; After Hokusai (clarinet and delicate electronics) to Penelope’s Song (viola and electronics made from weaving sounds) to Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi, a set of eighteen variations for solo piano based on the popular tune often sung at the Jewish Sabbath. And, to wrap it up, there will be a performance of Tape Music∞, for any number of participants and electronics made from playing with all kinds of tape – such as duct, packing, etc. The performers are students from the New World School of the Arts and Florida International University, conducted by the composer. Judith Shatin is known for her colorful and dramatic music, called ‘… highly inventive music on every level: hugely enjoyable and deeply involving, with a constant sense of surprise…” by The Washington Post. Her music engages our social, cultural and physical environments. Shatin is no stranger to Miami audiences, having served as composer-in-residence for the Deering Estate Chamber Players series for several years, with additional performances at the Bass and Wolfsonian Museums.

Miami Light Project and MDC Live Arts proudly present renowned choreographer Nora Chipaumire. Chipaumire’s performance, Miriam, is a stunning dance tribute to the life of South African singer and freedom fighter Miriam Makeba.

Miriam is conceived, written and choreographed by Chipaumire and directed by Eric Ting.
Chipaumire creates her first character-driven work – a deeply personal dance-theatre performance that looks closely at the internal battles women face between public expectations and private desires, between selflessness and ambition and between the perfection and sacrifice of the feminine ideal. With an original score by six-time Grammy nominee Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa, Miriam layers text, sound and images that enrich the mysterious and haunting world of Chipaumire’s creation.

The inspiration for Miriam springs from the cultural and political milieu of Chipaumire’s own South African childhood, the symmetries in her and Makeba’s exiles and her self-discovery as an artist. But Miriam also reverberates with other literary and legendary influences, including the writings of Joseph Conrad and Chenjerai Hove, and the Christian iconography of Mary.

Chipamuire describes the work as “a solo for two people,” the persona embodied by Chipaumire emerging from a pile of rocks onstage to convey-through movement and text-a woman’s struggles with the burden of objectification and the weight of resistance in a world defined largely by men. Her efforts are abetted and haunted by an otherworldly character, both angel and devil, performed by Bronx-born Okwui Okpokwasili. In their interplay, Miriam renders in vivid images the intensity of women who fight to create themselves despite the dual legacies of strict cultural traditions and imperialist racial views that define female beauty and power.

Irreversible Magazine and Oxenberg Fine Art Exhibition of Fernando Vignoli 12/28/13

Irreversible Magazine and Oxenberg Fine Art Exhibition of Fernando Vignoli
Saturday, December 28th, from 12PM to 2PM
irreversibleOxenberg Fine Art
50 Ne 29th Street
Miami, Fl 33137

Fernando Vignoli was born in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 14, 1960. He studied at Colégio Militar (a high school held by the Brazilian Army) and concluded his high school education at Colégio Pitágoras where he majored in architectural design. He graduated in Visual Communication at ESAP Escola Superior de Artes Visuais (University School of Visual Arts). Vignoli’s oil paintings rife with passageways, labyrinths, doors and windows are swathed in light to symbolize the possibility of escape from an unwanted reality. His strict, structured childhood under the watchful eye of his father, an army captain, inspires many of his works.

Looking at his paintings, writes John Ensley Hooker, who contributed to a recent monograph about the artist, “is like walking through a labyrinth of walls painted by him. Either you end up in a dark corner without knowing where to go, or you discover a vibrant view of the artist’s soul.”

Experience the future of storytelling, February 1-5, 2014. FilmGate Interactive, South Florida’s first fully interactive film festival and conference, emerges for a second year to showcase the latest ideas and innovations of modern storytelling. Featuring interactive screenings, exhibits, the first annual FILM WALK™, an Interactive Tech Playground, transmedia dance performances, a Story Hackathon, panels, workshops, bike-ins and music.

FilmGate Interactive, South Florida’s first fully interactive film festival and technology conference, presented by the Indie Film Club Miami, emerges for a second year, January 30 – February 5, 2014, throughout various South Florida venues, to engage the community in a showcase of the latest ideas and innovations of modern storytelling and audience engagement.

Based on the power of transmedia (cross-platform) storytelling and its ability to deliver and transform the way stories are told and experienced, FilmGate Interactive will present a host of events that employ various entertainment formats linked together such as film, contemporary dance, theater, music, gaming, mobile, and live events, to tell a single story. Offering a mix of interactive activities, with film and technology at the core, the 2014 line-up includes:

CNTL/ALT/DANCE Transmedia Dance Performances curated by Pioneer Winter
January 30 – February 1, 2014, visit Film-Gate.org for showtimes
Miami Light Project, 404 NW 26 Street, Miami, FL
FEE: $0 to $45
This interactive dance program includes, Drive-In Voyeur and Romantic Endings, Choreographed by Pioneer Winter and produced by Indie Film Club MIami. Drive-In Voyeur is an interactive performance that reflects on the time of late 1950s and early 1960s popularity of the drive-in movie using movement, contemporary dance and video projection. Romantic Endings pairs favorite romantic death scenes with contemporary dance performances and a curated food experience created by a surprise Miami Chef. The experience and professional “hand holders” are supplied. In TRPL QUINCE, quince being the traditional Hispanic coming-of-age/coming-out party for 15-year-old girls, the flamboyantly outrageous Cuban-American performer-choreographer-producer Octavio Campos is throwing himself not one but three quinces in a single performance. However, TRPL Quince, which will have its third showing at FilmGate 2014, looks nothing like the usual elaborately costumed party. Instead, Campos addresses a roiling mass of issues: his Cuban family’s refusal to accept his homosexuality and his desire to be an artist; the sometimes-troubled history of the men in his family; his reasons for making art; the looming challenges of middle age and mortality. “This transmedia event is my quince, my walkabout, my bar mitzvah, my rite of passage, my view of Miami, Berlin and New York, in all of it’s f*&#ed up glory!!! A celebration of Freedom and life and the ever-looming clock of mortality,” said Octavio Campos.

This interactive documentary offers an utterly original encounter with a disorder that affects one in three people in the developed world. In September 2012, insomniacs around the world began sharing their stories on nfb.ca/insomnia. Thousands have contributed webcam testimonies, written accounts and original artwork—material that forms the heart of A Journal of Insomnia. Highway to Hops with Miami Brew Bus

First, we met in Coconut Grove at Lokal for a nice long ride to Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Next stop is M.I.A Brewing, and lastly at Wynwood Brewing.  Then, we finish off back at Lokal after having worked up a serious appetite from all the beers.

About the breweries on the tour, here’s a description from the Miami Brew Bus website:

FUNKY BUDDHA BREWERY

Founded in 2010, Funky Buddha Brewery began as a brewpub, lounge, and hookah bar in Boca Raton, Florida. Initially brewing on a small, 40-gallon system, the brewpub began creating truly unique culinary-inspired beers, reaching worldwide acclaim such as 27th best brewery in the world according to RateBeer! Three short years later Buddha opened its 20,000 sq ft production brewery in the heart of South Florida, focusing on the continued use of big, bold flavors. You can find their flagships beers Hop Gun IPA and Floridian Hefeweizen on tap at the brewery year-round, and if you’re lucky enough to try a limited release you certainly won’t forget it! No Crusts Peanut Butter & Jelly Brown Ale, Blueberry Cobbler Ale, and Passionfruit Berlinerweiss are a few of our favorites. Just sayin’!

M.I.A. BREWING CO.

A very special part of our tour brings you to M.I.A. Brewing where you will be able to witness a brewery being born! M.I.A. Brewing has begun construction and estimates a January 2014 opening. Although the brewery hasn’t become operational they’ve already made a name for themselves at beer festivals and special events with their flagships Domino Pilsner, Freestyle Wheat Pale Ale, Castaway Kolsche, and the M.I.A. IPA. Yes, there will be beer and yes, hardhats are required!

WYNWOOD BREWING CO.

Miami’s first production brewery recently opened in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District. What used to be a warehouse and manufacturing district, Wynwood is now home to one of the largest street art exhibits in the world. Following the theme of art in beer making it was extremely important for the founders of Wynwood Brewing to be located in this exceptional neighborhood. Brewed with Miami’s hot weather in mind, their flagship beers, Pop’s porter, La Rubia Blond Ale, and Wynwood IPA, are light bodied, and crisp, ah makes us wanna go to the beach!

You And I Art Love Mission: “You And I Are Love is an emerging organization that caters to the local Miami art community and working towards spreading our work globally.

Prolific theater artist, Thaddeus Phillips weaves together real adventures of international border crossings into a dramatic examination of imaginary lines, arbitrary passports and curious customs. 17 Border Crossings explores a world opened up by the fall of the Berlin Wall on 11/9/89 and sealed off by the events of 9/11/01. A seasoned world traveler and wildly inventive artist, Phillips embarks on new territory by stripping the stage bare to create a deceptively simple stage voyage that takes audiences to the frontiers of Bosnia, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Bali, Czech Republic, Israel, Jordan and Mexico.

For the first time in Wynwood- our annual celebration of Cuban music!

Listening to the bitter-sweet lyrics of Cuban singer Yusa and the simple sophistication of her music, one knows one is finally hearing 21st century Cuba. Her cutting-edge songs map the contemporary emotional lives of urban Havana. Fused inside her music are traces from further afield, from iconclastic jazz and rock to today’s Brazil. Full of the vital energy of experimentation and the textures of musical exchange gained in intimate venues, Yusa offers a whole new way of hearing Cuba.
