The University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Leah Brown at University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building.

Borderland is a dreamlike, sculptural installation with sound where the exhibition is presented as both a metaphor for the unconscious mind and as an experience of an alternate reality where the viewer assumes the roles of actor and audience. Here, radially oriented objects appear to be simultaneously human, animal, and landscape.  The gallery walls are presented as a space becoming conscious of itself, personified as an oversized figure achieving lucidity. The audio in the space is a recording of Brown’s voice orating an automatic text created within the gallery as part of her process of inhabiting the realm between conscious and unconscious states.

Leah Brown is a sculptor and installation artist, whose object-oriented work questions the hierarchical structures imposed on reality. Brown was born in Washington DC, raised in the mountains of North Carolina, and currently lives and works in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She received her BFA with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design, and is an MFA Candidate in Sculpture from the University of Miami. In 2013 she received the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship.  In addition to her studio practice, Leah is co-curator of the FATVillage Arts District in Ft Lauderdale, FL, where she oversees the curation of the FATVillage Projects Contemporary Art Space.
