Every city has its book written in a million different volumes, each with its own author. New York tells stories of a concrete jungle, crawling with those who strive to one day take a chunk of the apple and feast on it for the rest of eternity. Los Angeles with its tales of lost angels flocking from all over the world is heaven for some, purgatory or even hell for others. But what about Miami? What of its book? Time and time again the city has been glamorized by South Beach and its pretty colors. A city supposedly filled with flamingos and peacocks ignores the pigeons and mocking birds that truly call it home. Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees will give a voice to a group of native sons telling Miami’s story through their own work. Each artist, different from the next, will own a little piece of this epic volume by adding a chapter to the Magic City.
WYN 317 Gallery is pleased to present Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees, a group exhibition curated by Ivan Roque featuring works by Ernesto Maranje, James Livingston, James Brutus, Danny Ferrer and Ivan Roque.

CASTING 101 LAB

Whether you’re making a blockbuster hit or a nano-budget indie flick, all filmmakers know that matching an actor to the script is crucial to the success of a film. Yes, some directors choose to do it themselves, but the experience and expertise of a casting director is invaluable to the pre-production process. Actors and filmmakers alike are able to maximize creativity and success if a casting director puts the two together correctly.

From how to get the best out of your casting director to finding the right talent agent who will book you in Miami, LA and New York, this is an incredibly valuable workshop that will demystify the process from the complementing perspectives of a group of successful professionals: actor Jordi Vilasuso, casting director/manager Manny Arca, and casting directors Ed Arena and George Ortiz.

If you are an actor in South Florida planning to attend, please bring your headshot and your reel, we are creating an actor archive that we would like to share with our members and the casting directors in attendance.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

ACTORS
– how to land a contract with an agent

This is an essential flash lab designed for everyone who wants a fluent understanding of the role and function of the script supervisor, and is aimed at helping both independent filmmakers and future script supervisors alike.

In addition, she has worked as Production Coordinator, directed a few short films, and produced a feature and short films. She has worked on Pain & Gain, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Others & The Wonder Years.

-Script supervision forms
-How to “see” like a script supervisor
-Set Protocol
-What is the difference between feature films and TV series
-The “axis of action” and basic editing theory
-How the script supervisor can help prevent technical errors
-Handling multiple camera shooting
-What block shooting is and how to prepare for it
-Doing continuity on improvised scenes
-Working as a script supervisor on commercials
-VFX/Creating a digital workflow for effective computer-based editing notes

This lab will fill in any gaps in training you may have, regardless if you have worked on features or short films or have never set foot onto a film set. Useful for the director, actor or any other film professional. Participants interested in becoming Script Supervisors should augment their training with on-set experience as well as observing editors or editing their own work.

We all know that creativity and innovation are inversely related to big budgets. The democratization of technology of recent years has dropped the barrier of entry, providing indie filmmakers with the resources to be successful outside of the Hollywood system. There is nothing stopping you from making a nano budget film, right here in Miami (without needing to resort to criminal activities).

This Workshop Covers:

How to properly plan a low-budget feature

Your film’s saving grace: how to land an angel investor

Shooting a nano-budget feature in Miami

How to work with SAG Actors and non-actors

Time to get noticed: how to successfully market your film

Signing with an agent

Now you have offer: Now What? How to pick the right distribution company

The Young Artist Initiative (YAI) is an organization that aims to increase the audience and give exposure to local creatives, we are having an event Tuesday, July 2, 2015 at 10 p.m. at Bardot in Wynwood. Based on your previous pieces on music I think covering the YAI event is a great fit among your content.

We will be featuring the following creatives along with links to their Soundcloud or Beatport accounts.

Bedside; Made up of Trace Barfield and Travis Acker, their soothing slow-down vibe incorporates elements of modern electronic deejay culture alongside the timeless art of horn instrumentation.

Analog; Reminiscent of a 70’s west-coast highway one cruise bathed in post-grunge rasp, Analog delivers a cross between modern and classical rock-and-roll influences.

Enzo Picardi; Native to Argentina, 21 year-old Enzo Picardi has been producing across the electronic spectrum from a young age.

Harry Andrw; Venezuelan deejay and producer Harry Andrw transcends the electronic music continuums, crafting sounds and tracks that transcend the boundaries of music, presenting them as works of art and culture.

The “fiercely gifted” (New York Times) pianist Sarah Cahill returns to Miami to perform yet another fantastic program. The event is set to celebrate the 80th birthday of Terry Riley, one of the most iconic American composers. Sarah explains: “His music is far more complex and adventurous than people give him credit for, and he has written so much terrific music since In C,” his most infamous opus. Newly commissioned works of four emerging composers (Sam Adams, Danny Clay, Christine Southworth and Dylan Mattingly) are featured together with pieces by Pauline Oliveros, Evan Ziporyn and Juraj Kojs.

Sarah talks about the concert: “What I love about this program is that each composer reflects on Terry Riley’s music but none of the pieces sound like him.  Using a tiny speaker hidden in the piano, Sam Adams creates resonances with sine waves in duet with the pianist.  Evan Ziporyn’s You Are Getting Sleepy gets some of its inspiration from Evan’s work with Balinese gamelan and Ghanaian drumming.  Christine Southworth’s Sparkita and Her Kittens deconstructs a Bollywood soundtrack.  25-year-old Danny Clay’s three-movement Circle Songs shimmers with Terry Riley’s sunny positive California energy, but the resemblances stop there. Pauline Oliveros’ A Trilling Piece for Terry is a structured improvisation, which I have been playing as a duet with whoever is turning pages for that particular concert.  Pauline has known Terry since the 60s when they co-founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center, so it’s particularly meaningful to have a piece by her.”

The concert features a world premiere: Kojs’ In the Mist, a piece also commissioned by Sarah Cahill. The work combines traditional playing and unconventional extended techniques, including the reformulation of pianist’s hands and feet as percussion instruments.

Cookie’s Kid is a solo dance theater work that explores what is inherited muscle memory. Herrera interprets her experience growing up with a-tough-as nails Bronx mother and a counter-revolutionary Cuban refugee father, by delving deeply into ecstatic movement to discover what information her body holds about her cultural history. Exploring iconic cultural references ranging from La Lupe, to Chuck Norris, to Walter Mercado as well as utilizing Afro-Cuban dance and Trance Dance as the framework for movement, Rosie investigates how these seemingly unrelated idols are connected by themes of rebellion, strength, and vulnerability.

Unseen films, including South Florida and Caribbean-centric home movies and amateur film “arrangements,” will be screened in a new media exhibition space, The Screening Room on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 and 8:00 PM in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Selected from the collections of the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives by artist and guest curator Barron Sherer, the films are 16mm preservation prints, each the end result of laborious and expensive photochemical restoration. Two reels of film will be projected in a diptych – two images running side by side. The silent films will be accompanied by artist David Brieske, who will spin mood and tone-appropriate and experimental musical accompaniment culled from his collection of esoteric LPs.

Illicit Content features works by a group of artists who vividly demonstrate the blurred line between vandalism and street art. What might be considered illegal, like painting on property without permission, becomes an acceptable art form when it attracts admirers and draws commentary about the revitalization of an area or a shabby building. This is true in Wynwood where passionate artists express their creativity for all to see, often pushing the legal boundaries with their graffiti to the point that some artists have paid with their freedom and even their lives.

This exhibit proudly showcases works with seemingly illicit content demonstrating how perception, creative expression and legality collide.

Blueshift Wynwood is pleased to announce Andrew Levitas: Metalwork Playground, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Levitas, known for his meticulously handcrafted photo-sculptures developed through his patented/trademarked process Metalwork Photography®, has produced a new body of work consisting of recreational playground equipment.
Driven by the desire to express his inner vision in a highly personalized medium, Levitas encourages dialogue on the most pressing concerns of our times: dramatic shifts in America’s political and economic strength, technology and our quest for simplicity, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. Levitas creates an inviting experience through the lens of easily recognized forms (seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds) and the most cherished and happiest of experiences – childhood playtime that can also translate to adult environments. To further complicate this discussion, the sculptures are crafted following the strictest of design principles in gleaming polished chrome. Their sleekness hints at our need for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions.
Levitas, who is also a filmmaker and writer, began his fine art practice as a painter and photographer. Finding the medium of photography personally limiting, he developed Metalwork Photography®, a process involving the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are in turn melted onto hand etched metal sheets creating a highly reflective surface. Levitas’s installations take this technique one-step further and are comprised of multi- paneled interlocking metal sheets. Built to scale, the playground equipment sculptures, just like his photographs, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and are completely functional art objects.
Born in New York City, Levitas received his BA from NYU where he currently teaches courses on the creative process. In 2008, the artist was accepted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which concluded with an exhibition at the Louvre. In addition to a growing list of American and international exhibitions, his work has garnered attention through top auction houses, museums, and art fairs. Recent highlights include the first ever solo exhibition at Phillips Berkeley Square, London. Levitas also recently wrote and directed the feature film Lullaby staring Garrett Hedlund, Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Anne Archer, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Levitas maintains studios in London, New York and Los Angeles and continues to expand on ideas of engagement and creative expression.

Throughout her career, she has been inspired by one simple yet profound observation: That life is fragile, and yet, it is our knowledge of this that causes us to constantly move through cycles of building up and tearing down, rising and falling. Her work is all about movement, energy and capturing fleeting moments. Her work is all about life. Her work is all about you.

Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

What is a blood moon? A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon. In a blood moon, the moon is full, and as the sun’s light passes through the earth’s atmosphere, it casts a reddened shadow on the moon. Full lunar eclipses are rare, and blood moons even more so, but neither is unheard of. The next total Lunar Eclipse will occur on April 4th, 2015…

Future Painting, is the culmination of 4 years of research into video mapped paintings and will feature various approaches to integrating video and technology into mixed-media collage paintings. Through the use of video projections on top of physical paintings and translucent collages created directly on the face of video screens, Justin Wood transforms and twists the physical composition into a mesmerizing psychedelic experience. These works challenge the viewers perception of where the physical world ends and where the digital world begins and asks the question, Can painting and video exist at the same time? The show will also feature a site specific interactive wall painting that will respond to the depth and motion of the viewer through the use of a Kinect sensor, and allow the viewer to transform the video with their movement.

Marco Fusi, the Italian violist par excellence presents a program of the 21st-century Italian music for viola and for viola and cello with the Miami-based Jason Calloway.

Fusi believes that music unveils “something really mysterious and unpredictable” via a performer. Most of the programmed works are a result of personal collaboration with the composer: “Working together is the best way to learn about music, about yourself and about other points of view,” claims Fusi, pointing to the importance of expanding one’s musical horizons. Fusi is excited about musing the personal with professional. It is, in fact, the first time he will perform with the cellist Jason Calloway—his long-time friend and the new music string champion in Miami.

The program includes several US premieres and a World premiere by Luciano Chessa, that engages some curious “seasonal” items. Fusi is excited about sharing a diverse sample of contemporary Italian music with the South Florida audiences, offering a rare aural look “through a window the contemporary Italian soundscape.”

About the artist
Marco Fusi, violinist, violist and composer studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic and Jeanne-Marie Conquer. Marco has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös , Beat Furrer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Castiglioni, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Vacchi, and Cattaneo, among others. Marco has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, KKL Konzertsaal in Lucerne, Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Experimental Intermedia in NYC, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest. Marco has collaborated with Ensemble Algoritmo (Rome), Interface (Frankfurt), Proton (Bern), Linea (Strasbourg), Phoenix (Basel), l’Arsenale (Treviso), MotoPerpetuo (NYC), Ecce (Boston), and Handwerk (Köln). His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius; he has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Milan Conservatory. Marco was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez.

Cost: $40.00

Wynwood wall art and artists are reaching an all time fever pitch and Wall Brawl will be showcasing exactly that. Join us and see first hand how some of the most recognizable street artists do what they do best, as they battle it out and raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The fact that the Oxygen Channel has started airing their new TV show “Street Art Throwdown”, specifically on street art, is only compounding how hot this trend has become.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to watch some of the biggest names in street art go face to face and compete for the title of the Best Street Artist of Miami.
Open bar by Bombay Sapphire and Zacapa Rum with lite bites by Morgans for all those attending as you place your vote for your favorite artist and we auction off their pieces.

At Wall Brawl Miami we will be auctioning off the pieces to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities as a silent auction. What his means is that recognized artists will be donating their time and art to help raise money. Art enthusiasts and art collectors will have a unique opportunity to acquire a piece from a recognized artists that would normally go for tens of thousands, at any given gallery, for pennies on the dollar. Our silent auction has no reserve and creates a very unique opportunity to be able to buy original, one-of-a-kind pieces by some of the top artists, starting at $1.00 dollar.

Artists include : HecOne Love, Skott Marsi, Bruno Vago, Furious (DAM Crew), KEDS (DAM Crew), Monique Lassooij, Claudia La Bianca, TeePop, NateD, Wilson, Jorge-Miguel Rodriguez, Ill Surge, GG, Atomik, Ivan Roque, Registered Artist, Aquarela Allyson Sabol, Nicole Salgar, Rigo Leon, Kazilla, Trek 6

Every year in March my partners and I always do a big, art related exposition and this is what we have chosen to produce this year. Our goal has always been to make Miami a major contender in the art world outside of Art Basel. Our belief has always been that Miami has a cultural and artistic backbone that only now is being recognized by everyone else.

The success and news of our expositions have garnered us worldwide attention and always in the month of March, so there is no association with Art Basel. Don’t just take my word for it you can very easily Google: Dali Miami and Haring Miami. There is an underlying story here waiting to get out.

This year we decided to turn our focus to home because we need the world to know that Miami is a hot bed for talented artists. Wynwood graffiti and wall art has reached an all time fever pitch. People from all over the world are coming to our little neighborhood just to check out this incredible symbiosis between property owners of buildings in Wynwood and graffiti artists. Business owners are now looking for artists to team up with so they can make their store fronts a piece of art that people will walk or drive around too and see. Business owners are incorporating their signs and business logos with the art to garner more attention and foot traffic.

Admission is only $40.00 and it includes music, open bar as well as lite bites. The brawl will take place March 6, 2015 from 7pm-10pm at The Annex located at 44 NE 29 ST in Wynwood. Space is limited and this being one of the most unique events in Miami it will sell out soon. Pre-sale tickets are already underway, get your tickets on line before we reach capacity at WallBrawlMiami .

The Reunion: Exhibition Opening at Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Audrey Love Gallery: The Reunion

“The Bakehouse Art Complex opened in 1987 in the former Art Deco American Bakeries Company building in today’s Wynwood Arts District, by a group of artists relocating from Coconut Grove. These artists founded the nonprofit Bakehouse Art Complex and repurposed the industrial building into working studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the 29-year history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for art careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a puppetry master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. Confirmed artists include: Pablo Cano, Xavier Cortada, Veronica Garcia, Suza Talbot, Maggie Davis, Carrie Sieh, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, Christian Bernard, Ross Ford, Beatricia Sagar, Luis Diaz, John La Huis, Tracey Hagen, Richard Labarbera, Juan Griego, Maria Sonia Martin, Robert Apfel, Marcos Valella, Gustavo Oviedo, Armando Chagon, Henry Mar.”

The 12 Nights Electronics and Music series welcomes Jarek Kapuscinski, an innovative intermedia composer.
Jarek Kapuscinski is an intermedia composer and pianist whose work has been presented at New York’s MOMA; ZKM in Karlsruhe; Centre Pompidou in Paris; and Reina Sofia Museum in Marid, among others. He has received awards at the UNESCO Film sur l’Art festival in Paris, VideoArt Festival Locarno, and FNCNM in Montréal. He was first trained as a pianist and composer at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and expanded into multimedia during studies at the University of California, San Diego (1992-1997). Currently, he is Assistant Professor of composition and intermedia at Stanford University.

Kapuscinski is a musician, but his music is audiovisual. “It is made of sounds and images and more importantly with their relationship over time. I am interested in the emergent in-between – the intermedia,” says Kapuscinski. His pieces indeed emerge from the formalization of the elemental and the pure. “The piece is finished not when there is nothing more that I can add but rather, when there is nothing left to be removed. “ He believes in a thoughtful process of elimination of non-essential elements, aspiring to achieve a transparent and spacious form, that can generate complex emotional response. It is through the synthesis of complexity and simplicity that the stepping stone narratives (made of simple, haiku-like moments) mediate a rich experience. Kapuscinski is not shy to express positive feelings of joy, love, wholeness, goodness and transcendence. “I embrace everyday, familiar emotions and musical language that invokes them. There is richness and profoundness to be found in the common and seemingly simple.”

The program presents a retrospective of Kapuscinski’s works. It stretches from Mondrian Variations, an early work that defined my interest in composing with sounds and images both conceived simultaneously, “painted on a single canvas” to Where is Chopin a recent fascination with micro-expressions in faces of people from around the world as they listen to music. The first one was a result of rather solitary process while the latter involved travel to 12 different countries and private one on one sessions with over 150 people.  Each of the works has a rich story of its making. Having no space (or time) for that, I can probably say just a few words about the creative interests that unite them all.

Copyright and Street Art

Street art is a hot commodity in Miami, featured in our neighborhoods and in art auctions, fairs and events. It is also featured in advertisements, promotions and in other ways not always endorsed by the artists. Can street art be copyrighted? Artist’s rights have been in the news due to two well known law cases pitting street artists against corporate entities. The slippery nature of copyright law has
left many wondering where to draw the line. There are no easy answers. Join us for a moot court style forum to explore this important topic.

Featured speakers: Steve Eisenberg, Esq. & Jose Talavera, Esp. of Lipscomb Eisenberg & Baker PL; Jaime Gekas, Esq., Foley & Lardner LLP.

Along with curated art tours with street art specialist Sebastien Laboureau.

Networking cocktail reception follows event, a chance to mix and mingle with artists, attorneys, business professionals and others in creative industries.

Global art agency and gallery, Art Bastion Miami, will be showcasing an art exhibit of exclusive paintings from the ‘twice forgotten’ Russian colorist and fantastical realist, Boris Chetkov (1926 – 2010), February 21 – March 21, 2015. A V.I.P. wine reception will be hosted by Art Bastion Miami opening night on February 21st, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., where guests will enjoy complimentary cocktails and a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The Boris Chetkov: Portraits exhibition consists of the largest private collection of many never-before-seen paintings by Chetkov, owned by collector Peter Hoffman, Jr., founder of the Hoffman Art Institute.

Opening the exhibition will be Russian art historian and broadcast journalist, Rosie Rockel, who has co-curated this thought-provoking exhibit with the Hoffman Art Institute. Ms. Rosie Rockel regularly presents arts coverage and is considered one of the leading critical voices on Russian 20th century and contemporary art.

Mr. Peter Hoffman, Jr., will be inaugurating the show, in addition to local and international Modern Art experts. They will consider the techniques and lasting relevance of Chetkov’s portraits, that depict the duality – public and private persona – and duplicity that living under communism engenders, a highly relevant topic in Miami today.

Spanning three decades, Boris Chetkov: Portraits, brings together 20 important works from the zenith of Chetkov’s long career working in Russia during one of the most tumultuous periods in 20th-century history. The exhibition includes bold works created during Khrushchev’s Thaw of the 1960s, through his years painting in secret while working officially as a glass artist, up to his paintings made during the liberal glasnost years of the 1980s.

Art Bastion was founded by internationally recognized art collector and curator, Sebastiano Varoli, with the mission of discovering and representing artists around the world and introducing their artwork to broader audiences. Varoli has collaborated with renowned art initiatives ranging from the Musée D’Orsay in Paris to the Royal Ballet in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

Boris Chetkov: Portraits Exhibition will be open to the public February 21 – March 21, 2015
Tuesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The thrilling University of Miami-based Unbound Improv Ensemble emerged from an initiative of the multi-instrumentalist Matthew Taylor, percussionist Tyson Voigt and vocalist Jennifer Voigt in October, 2013. Since then, the group has performed around the city, including the Acoustica21 concert last April. While the Unbound players are superbly trained to perform the “classical” music, they also possess incredible curiosity to explore musical soundscapes beyond those prescribed in the scores. “As musicians we are always striving to expand our sensibilities and remain open to new paths,” explains Taylor.
The performance is only a part of it. It is through the focused listening to each other that new spontaneous musical experience transpire. Their virtuosity and artistry enables them to devour an hour with the most engaging and surprising musical acrobatics, often moving in the space and using imaginative performance techniques. You may need to travel far beyond the state border to hear a high caliber improvised acoustic music such as that performed by the Unbound Improv Ensemble. “It is important that more voices are heard in music community of Miami,” says Taylor about offering the city this new musical experience. May these acoustic alchemists conjure an event that will long resonate in the ears of the Miami music lovers!

This event is free to the public.

– Dinner will be available for sale from Vibe 305!

This month’s featured film: THE WIZ

Featuring spectacular musical numbers with Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor, experience the magic of The Wiz when Dorothy is whisked away to the enchanting wonderland of Oz.

A re imagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an entirely African-American cast, The Wiz was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. The film follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy Harlem, New York, schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the Land of Oz, which resembles a fantasy version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the land to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say has the power to take her home.

In the husband and wife duo, West meets East in music for piano and computers.
Composer/pianist Chen-Hui Jen and composer/computer musician Jacob David Sudol met in grad school at UC San Diego where they began collaborating on projects that combine Eastern and Western musical idioms quickly.
“Since we are both composers, we select and interpret works based on our ears, tastes, as well as our deeper understanding on other composers’  works.  Our thoughts also incorporate  western and asian philosophies and aesthetics.  This is reflected in our programming choices.  Following our multi-cultural backgrounds and diverse experiences, we’re also very open-minded to try different things and other works that many other performers wouldn’t dare to combine in a program or perform,“ say Sudol and Chen about forming their Jen/Sudol Duo in 2010.

To date, they have performed 16 concerts, presenting both newly composed repertoire and ‘classic’ music for piano and electronics in cities such as San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Taipei.

“….when I’m working I forget that Jacob’s my husband.  I guess being intimate makes our collaboration easier, because we both want to make good music,” says Jen. Sudol adds: “we don’t really need to worry about manners when rehearsing because we both know that we can’t offend or upset each other while rehearsing.” Today’s concert is indeed about quality and variety. The program is designed to highlight the diversity and compelling imaginary and poetic worlds that result from combining rich possibilities of electronic music with the acoustic piano.  You will hear synthetics sounds merging with the acoustic piano, the piano sonorities combined with digitally retuned pianos for the purpose of creating magical resonances and echoes slowly catching up with their original acoustic sound. Colorful instrumental resonances will present a seamless marriage between the acoustic and electronic sonorities in a way that could never happen with just acoustic instruments or just electronic technologies.

The program will feature music from the Americas, Europe and Asia, namely, the works by M. Davidovsky, B. Jacobs, J.D. Sudol, K. Y. Chong and G. F. Haas.

Watch Jen performing Sudol’s wash yourself of yourself here.

“SAVAGE: Art made by Animals for Animals” is an art show featuring a collection of works created by the animals at Zoo Miami and their stewards. The show explores several themes, the first being the immediate relationship between each animal and its’ human trainer/keeper. It also offers viewers a new way to experience the majesty of animals through motion and texture, as they express themselves through various media. This event is a collaborative fundraiser between Zoo Miami and the South Florida Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers. All proceeds from the art show will go towards supporting species conservation and research both locally and internationally.

Habitats and species are under tremendous pressures from our rapidly changing world. Our animal residents of Zoo Miami serve as ambassadors to their wild counterparts, and this event offers a unique and different way for supporters to help. Together with our partners, we are determined to do everything we can to help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to see the same marvels of the world that we have been privileged to cherish.

MELANCHOLALALAND

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

Arts Mean Business Forum Highlights from Miami Arts Week and next steps in new economy discussions

beaconimage-300x151

ON DECEMBER 18th,  LAURA BRUNEY wrote the article found below, which was originally published December 12, 2014 on their blog, www.artsbizmiami.org/ArtsBizBlog. It was edited and republished for the ARTSBlog with permission from the author.

We are excited to hear, where the city is headed in these discussions of new economies and to see who is going to be asked to be a part of these discussions from our community.

The 2014 edition of Art Basel week this December in Miami featured the perfect marriage of arts and business. Beyond the dozens of satellite fairs and thousands of gallery booths catering to collectors, Miami Art Weekoffered a far more compelling benefit for businesses eager to court potential clients. Pacesetters from all industries and brand power houses swooned at the reach of art week. Developers, financial investment companies, tech start-ups, luxury car brands, and more cleverly leveraged the arts as a strategic imperative for business. These companies know the arts mean business.

During Art Week, the Arts & Business Council of Miami hosted an Access Breakfast Forum with theBeacon Council to discuss how the arts are transforming Miami and why the creative industry matters to business. Donna Abood, Chair of the Beacon Council, and I opened the program with some astonishing facts. The arts industry in Miami-Dade has a 1.1 billion dollar impact and employs 30,000 full time workers. More than 13 million people participated in the arts this year, and thousands of business professionals shared their skills as volunteers and board members. Cultural tourism, a major component of brand Miami, brings 5 million visitors each year. Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, kicked off the program talking about how the arts bring a competitive advantage to companies that are involved.
The flash of transformation in any city is culture and art. Collaborations between arts and business enhance quality of life, especially in cities like Miami.

Lynch praised our vibrant cultural community. “I was immersed in art from the moment I stepped off the plane and walked through Miami International Airport, which was filled art installations and marvelous art. Every time I come there is something new and I am always energized. Miami is a 24 hour city. As I was returning to my hotel at midnight last evening a lot people were just leaving to start their night.”

“Business support for the arts isn’t a charity; it’s an investment that creates shared value through mutually beneficial partnerships,” said Lynch. He outlined the value the arts bring to business including brand empowerment, leveraging connections with clients and consumers, professional development that encourages innovation and creativity, and enhancing the workspace. Involvement with the arts is good for executives, clients, shareholders, and employees.

Beacon Council President & CEO, Larry Williams, closed out the morning by sharing the impressive economic impact figures for Miami-Dade’s creative industries. Lynch perfectly summed up the breakfast forum by saying that extending partnerships to span all industries and fostering collaboration is building the new economy of ideas in Miami.

This piece by Laura Bruney of the Arts & Business Council of Miami was originally published December 12, 2014 on their blog, www.artsbizmiami.org/ArtsBizBlog. It has been edited and republished for ARTSBlog with permission from the author.

Long!

Swenson Shots are designed to give emerging artists their first experience producing a gallery show from start to finish and provide a space for a more experienced artist to experiment and showcase a new line of work. The shows will have a fast turnaround, with artists having the space from Monday to Sunday with an opening on Wednesday. This is just enough time to set up, have an opening, lead a talk, document the show, and conduct private visits with curators, gallerists, and potential buyers. This complete, soup-to-nuts opportunity is key to launching promising careers beyond the studio and into the professional art world.

Forward-thinking and unique, the inaugural Mana Miami art fair presents a dynamic agenda of exhibitions, conversations, and events organized by Mana Contemporary. Held at Mana’s Wynwood campus, a 140,000-square-foot facility that covers 22 acres, the fair offers collectors a diverse roster of programming that echoes the art organization’s commitment to the creative process.

Mana Miami includes three distinct displays: Mana Monumental, a selection of large-scale works by artists who have a studio in, exhibited at, or are otherwise connected to Mana; GLE at Mana, recent projects from the celebrated screen-printing studio Gary Lichtenstein Editions; and Dirty Geometry, a survey of twenty-three Latin American artists who reject traditional geometric style in favor of a playful, erotic ethos. Daily roundtable discussions, called Mana Sessions, explore themes such as alternative museum pedagogy, the evolution of independent art publications, and social media-driven shifts in aesthetic perception. An exclusive VIP Lounge doubles as a rendezvous for guests to connect with participating artists. Conceived as an alternative to the traditional art fair model, Mana Miami explores the making process of a contemporary art community that is at once relevant, progressive, and profound.

ART BASEL Exhibit of Paintings by Dale Nally
Dec 4-7, 2014
Open Daily 12noon-8pm
with general reception Saturday December 6, 6-8pm

From Kentucky farm boy to celebrated artist, Dale Nally wore many hats. An artist, a man, but most importantly a spiritual being, he embodied a sense of kindness and a gentleness of spirit seldom found in other men. His remarkable paintings were most certainly his passion, but Dale devoted his life to helping the downtrodden wherever he encountered a needy soul. Many human beings can relate to having a spiritual experience, but Dale Nally was truly a spiritual being having a human experience. His spirituality permeated his life in every aspect, from his yoga practice to the profoundly emotional creation of his work, which evokes a sense of calm and a peaceable nature. Dale’s paintings are greatly influenced by his travels and studies in Asia as well as his rural, Appalachian upbringing. His canvases are organic rather than static objects. The connection with nature is always palpable while experiencing one of his pieces.

Event is Free and open to the public!

A week-long art and entertainment fair focusing on progressive art is set to take center stage during Art Basel Week. The pop up gallery and lounge is affectionately called Basel House, because it’s home to the largest collection of pure street artists along with mixed media, digital artists and sculptures. For those who like street art and graffiti, there’s no place else to be. Artists will paint live on canvas, brick walls and anything they can get their hands on, including a 1961 Bentley. Their work will also be displayed inside a 10,000 square-foot gallery called The Art House. A neat interactive feature of this event will allow people to try their hand at creating their own street art. On a daily basis, Canvas Vandals will host and help people unleash their “inner vandal” creativity on canvas.

“Basel House is designed to be inclusive of all artists and people. That’s why this event is free to the public. We’ve gone through great lengths to bring well-known graffiti artists from around the world, because we feel strongly that all art is important, whether you find it on a brick wall or a gallery wall,” said Tony Albelo, the event organizer.

In addition to live art from artists such as Greg Mike, Claw Money, Cope2, Kue Molly, Monorex and 2wenty, there will be live music with bands and VJ’s performing each night throughout the event. Also, the Top 21 Food Trucks will be present including Latin Burger, Inspir-Asian, King Of Racks BBQ, Poblano’s Mexican Fusion, The Health Nut On Wheels, Mobstah Lobstah, Conch Shack Food Junkies, and HipPOPs Handcrafted Gelato, to name a few.

If that weren’t enough, there will be an Arts & Crafts Showcase highlighting the uniqueness of Wynwood artisans with their hand-crafted creations.

All areas open at 12 noon each day and close at midnight, with the exception of The Art House, which will remain open until 2 a.m.

Peri Schwartz is included in collections internationally, among them the British Museum, London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., and the Kupferstichkabinett-Staatliche Museum, Berlin. Working with different media is an important part of the process Schwartz uses to develop her works. Representing similar subjects and formal arrangements in a variety of media challenges her to rethink and revise her compositions. The initial works done in her Studio series were created using charcoal; this allowed her to easily rework their compositions. Schwartz then alternated between creating paintings, drawings, and mono-types of the same subject; this method of moving back and forth between different media further facilitates the process she uses to work out formal arrangements.

Schwartz also addresses pictorial challenges in her Bottle &Jars series. In the carefully composed but compressed space of these works, attention is drawn to how the bottles and jars fill the picture plane and how they relate to each other and the space around them. In the way this is done, it is clear color and shapes are as much the subject of these works as are the bottles and jars themselves. The effect is that these works must be understood as a modern synthesis of representation and abstraction.

The Wrapped Objects were first exhibited at the Fine Arts Center Galleries at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. They are included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Fogg Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and Memorial Art Gallery. In the catalog for the exhibition, Judith Tolnick Champa describes the work: In her idiosyncratic pastel drawings known as Wrapped Objects – Schwartz’s demonstrated expertise in figural art is brought to bear on a powerful sense of the self-containment associated with still-life, rather than figural practice. The Wrapped Objects ultimately derive from a campaign of intensive study of anatomy and its intimate historical correlative, drapery’s connection to the human body. The dazzling drapery interpretations of legendary figurative painters including the 16th-century Venetian, Titian; the 17th-century Spaniard, Diego Velazquez, the Fleming, Anthony Van Dyck and the 19th-century French artist Jean-August-Dominique Ingres, offers models of an art historical sort cited by the artist as the first Wrapped Objects were created and conjured by her work. Schwartz understands the accomplished pictorial means which these exemplars developed for interpreting their complex royal/aristocratic subjects. The subject is present beneath the drapery, but its individual shape and character – clues to its identity – are conveyed only through the push and pull, the tightness or laxness, the intricate surface wrap. And in the process the surface wrap gains its own freestanding vitality and identity.

Understanding shifts as Schwartz’s mysterious subjects become curious Wrapped Objects and figuration melds into a re-emergent sensation of still life. Exactly what is being represented is of less importance than how pictorial effects are achieved. Technically, Schwartz works in pastel but without the assistance of a coarse granular paper. She chooses a more finely grained and technically unforgiving surface, so that textures must be constructed through precise calibration of light and dark tonalities. Her pastels behave almost like charcoals as the richness of blue-blacks contrasts with the smooth matrix of white paper.

The Jungle Brothers

Straight Out the Jungle, Mike Gee (born Michael Small; Harlem, NY), DJ Sammy B (born Sammy Burwell; Harlem, NY), and Baby Bam (born Nathaniel Hall; Brooklyn, NY) came together as the Jungle Brothers in the mid-’80s and began their recording career at the dance label Idler. The result of the sessions, Straight Out the Jungle, was released in early 1988. The album’s Afrocentric slant gained the Jungle Brothers entry into the Native Tongue Posse, a loose collective formed by hip-hop legend Afrikaa Bambaataa, including Queen Latifah (and, later, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest). The album’s most far-out cut was “I’ll House You,” a collaboration with house producer Todd Terry and an early experiment in what later became known as hip-house. The single “I’ll House You,” added to the album in 1989, is known for being the first hip-house record recorded outside of the Chicago scene, which was a club hit that drastically changed the way the hip-hop and dance-music industries worked. Their first album, Straight Out the Jungle, was released on an independent record label (Warlock). In spite of the commercial failure of Straight Out the Jungle, Warner Bros. Records soon signed the group and released Done By the Forces of Nature in November 1989. The album was a critical smash at the time, though it has since been largely ignored by hip-hop critics in favor of the similarly acclaimed alternative hip-hop album 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul, released the same year. – See more at: http://www.hiphopscriptures.com/jungle-brothers/#sthash.cWBDXsyV.dpuf

The exhibit will open on December 3rd to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach 2014

Impulse, Reason, Sense, Conflict. Abstract Art from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection attempts to focus on the typical features of abstraction that still permeate in art production today and define it as a movement instead of an aesthetic category. The exhibit is divided in five areas: Abstract Impulses is dedicated to the crisis in representation and the rupture in mimetic representation. Laboratory of Reason refers to the questioning of the nature, essence and even the existence of art. Uncommon Senses relates to the integration and crossover of other mediums and other art forms that required the use of multiple senses, both from its makers and art’s viewers. Spatial Conflicts touches on Abstraction as a radical change in the conception of spatiality. The last section Expanded Field deals with many artists’ experimentation with non-traditional media like photography, film and collage. This group of works will only exist in a separate form in the catalogue. In the exhibition space they will be presented within the other curatorial groupings.

The exhibition includes 101 pieces by 72 artists from different generations and latitudes, who share their interpretations and philosophies of abstraction. This exhibit will also be the first CIFO exhibit curated by the foundation itself.

From beatboxing to poetry, KIND Healthy Snacks encourages South Florida to Do the KIND Thing® by joining them in recognition of our community’s most talented young artists. During Art Basel 2014, KIND will shine a light on the importance of music and the arts in the lives of youth through their #ichooseart campaign, an effort that includes several spontaneous street performances by student artists, a formal gallery of their work, and a unique opening night celebration. Focusing on the power of choice, KIND hopes to inspire guests to make powerful decisions in their lives both large and small, from living healthy lifestyles all the way to leaving a positive mark on the world through simple acts of kindness.

The #IChooseArt event is a Thursday night student showcase from 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm at Brick House Wynwood (187 NW 28th Street), KIND invites the community to experience the talent, passion and dedication of local young performers while enjoying cocktails, refreshments and the buzz of Midtown Miami. This event, free and open to the public, will serve as the kickoff to a series of pop-up performances that Basel-goers will spot throughout the city on December 5 and 6. By joining the #ichooseart movement, Art Basel attendees will reinforce the notion of art being accessible to all, something that can provide light in the dark, guidance and inspiration… all starting with the powerful choice to live a KINDer, healthier, more positive life.
