In the Lobby Lounge . . . WORDS! Wednesday, June 17th – 6:30pm
Olympia Theater at Gusman Center
174 E. Flagler Street
Miami FL 33131
This month’s theme is ArT, which means we will be reading WORDS! about aRT . . .
. . . and we’ve got some very special words indeed!
The Blazing World, by Siri Hustvedt. Breaking down the book through fiction reading, Olympia actors will bring to life the characters of Hustvedt’s latest novel, the provocative story of artist Harriet “Harry” Burden who, after years of watching her work ignored or dismissed by critics, conducts an experiment she calls Maskings. She presents her own art behind three male masks, concealing her female identity.
Wednesday, June 17th will be our first evening focused solely on fiction, breaking down a single book, and The Blazing World, with its fractured structure and diverging perspectives, really lends itself to this approach. Raquel Roque from Books & Books in Coral Gables will be on hand with copies of the novel for sale.
Doors open at 6:00 pm and the reading starts at 6:30 pm. Cocktails available at the bar. Guided tour of the historic Olympia Theater during intermission.
This is a FREE event, open to the public.
In The Lobby Lounge . . .”WORDS! is our second foray into the wonderful world of Wednesdays in Downtown Miami,” says Olympia Theater Executive Director Robert Geitner, “bringing theatre and prose back to the Olympia on a monthly basis.” Future words-oriented evenings will include directed play readings, improv, skits & spontaneous theater, short stories, readings of excerpts from longer works of fiction, and personal monologues “in their own words.” By October 2015, the event will be scheduled the first Wednesday of every month.
Presented by the Olympia Theater
Sponsored by the Miami Downtown Development Authority
Grant funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

It was a standing room only for the more than one hundred and fifty people who attended the opening of OBBA Sushi in Coral Gables this past Friday.
The Honorable Jim Cason, Mayor of Coral Gables presided over the cutting of the ribbon together with OBBA Sushi owners Walter Zapata and Tufic Akil. The Mayor also awarded Zapata and Akil with a Seal to City of Coral Gables based on their entrepreneurial achievements.
Once the ribbon was cut the sound of Taiko welcomed guests into the serene and well appointed dining rooms. The sushi creations coming out of the sushi bar were being consumed as soon as they were being put into the trays and the Sapporo kept flowing to the satisfaction of everyone. Definitely a great opening night!
OBBA Sushi is open and ready to make gastronomic history.

This year, the bloggers started the crawl by getting together at BULLA GASTROBARÂ , winner of the 2015 Taste of the Gables Award.
Bulla Gastrobar welcomed us with a choice of white or red Sangrias both of which were full of fruit flavor, talk about the perfect refreshment on a hot Florida June afternoon.
Then the tasting began…
Our sampling menu consisted of:
Salpicón de Mariscos: Grilled octopus, jumbo lump crab meat, shrimp, bell peppers, fresh lemon, oregano and olive oil. This combination of seafood flavors was simply amazing!
Huevos Bulla: Homemade potato chips, Serrano ham and potato foam drizzled with truffle oil. These eggs were just the perfect appetizer.
Bulla Sliders: Homemade garlic herb bread, beef, pork, veal, oyster mushroom patties, piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, crimini port reduction, tetilla cheese, and Portobello fries. This is actually a James Beard Foundation Burger and winner of The Taste of the Gables Award…need we say more?
By this time we were all excited and ready to continue.
Next stop on the list: BRICKTOPS right across the street.
Field Greens Salad: Mixed baby greens, tomatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and focaccia croutons with a homemade house vinaigrette.
Hearts of Romaine Caesar: Hearts of Romaine lettuce with grated parmesan and focaccia croutons with homemade Caesar dressing.
The Wedge Salad: Bib lettuce, thick cut bacon, red onion and blue cheese.
Scottish Salmon: Salmon lightly seasoned and simply grilled. So simple and yet so good!
Prime Sirloin Meat Loaf : Meat loaf made from prime sirloin and topped with a chili sauce glaze. Quite possibly the best meat loaf we’ve ever tasted.
Baby Back Ribs: Danish Baby Back Ribs topped with chipotle barbecue sauce. The ten hour slow cooked process is evident in the meat fall off the bone/melt in your mouth texture.
Obba Sandwich: Shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado and chives with spicy katzu mayo.
Banana Tempura: Batter fried banana.
Then it was on to BOOKS & BOOKS CAFE where they treated us to a delicious
Shrimp Avocado Tartine: Fresh shrimp, avocado, tomato, basil pesto, garlic aioli on grilled Ciabatta. We washed down with a great-bodied Uintaite BaBa Black Lager.
Our last stop was LA TABERNA GIRALDA, a quaint Spanish style tavern. The offerings:
Croquetas Cabrales: Cabrales cheese croquettes.
Chips de Berenjenas y Miel: Eggplant Chips sprinkled with honey.
Perfecto de Solomillo de Cerdo: Roasted pork tenderloin with caramelized onion and aroma of rosemary.
It was a perfect ending to a perfect evening.
Don’t forget that Coral Gables Restaurant Week ends June 28th so you better hurry and try to capitalize on all the wonderful tastes that the City Beautiful has to offer.

Funes’ Women are concept and form, are underground issues that arise in extraordinary colors, glow encased in large black lines. The face in the foreground of one of his current series, accuses changes since the beginning of the first decade. Face emerges from the back of the fabric to penetrate the viewer’s personal life, saying you are like me, while the individualist sentiment appears exaggerated in his own connections to feelings and emotions.
Join us for his exhibition in the Artisan Lounge in Gallery 1 and 3. Free admission.

KCC Productions presents Tito Puente, Jr. at Arts Garage
Got Mambo? You will be captivated by the rhythm and beat…almost stepping back into a time capsule yet with refreshing energy that will keep you asking for more! Come to Arts Garage June 5 and 6 and enjoy the hot Latin rhythms of Tito Puente,
Jr. and His Latin Jazz Ensemble. Showtime is 8 PM.
The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made.
It made people happy all over the world.†He has found enthusiastic audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son — and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.
His 2004 album, “In My Father’s Shoes†featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET Jazz television special of the same name. His later CD, “Got Mambo?†takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own.
Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente, Jr. and the album has received heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.
Expect an exciting evening of great music, and don’t forget your dancing shoes! Arts Garage is located at 180 NE First St in Delray Beach, phone (561) 450-6357. General admission is $25 at artsgarage.org.

Together with other organizations and individuals whose extraordinary efforts have benefitted children and families in Miami-Dade County, Dr. Bancalari will be honored at the 10th annual Champions for Children Luncheon Awards Ceremony, hosted by The Children’s Trust.
Dr. Bancalari contributed to the development of one of the largest and most prestigious neonatal programs in the United States; has helped save the lives of thousands of premature newborns; and trained generations of neonatologists working worldwide.

The Record Man is a uniquely American story of how a group of musical underdogs with raw talent and diverse backgrounds, led by the indefatigable determination of one man, Henry Stone, exported the music of Miami to the world.
Before there was a “music business†there was Henry Stone, “The Record Manâ€. From distributing records out of his ’48 Packard to establishing TK Records as the largest independent label of the 1970s, Henry had an ear for hits. His funky eight-track studio and chart topping family of artists including KC and the Sunshine Band, led to the original Miami Sound and birth of Disco. When his empire collapsed on a baseball field in Chicago in 1979, Henry didn’t miss a beat launching Miami Freestyle.

This is an exclusive pool party for VIPBLISS members only. For those that have never attended one of our pool parties expect a very social environment filled with sexy fun adults that enjoy good conversation, amazing EDM, lots of liquor and a little dose of sey fun. While this is a private party the hotel still has corporate ownerhip and we can’t go super crazy. That’s what after parties are for! The best two things about our venue is that we can really turn up on the EDM and we have the indoor day club to party in if the weather becomes inclement. Some of the craziest shit has happened in the past when rains came and we moved inside. If you know you have friends that wish to attend please direct them to register on our web site ASAP and not to wait until the last second.

The focus is to be informed and inspired by holistic and cost effective habits in relations to the earth.
About Historic Virginia Key Beach:
2015 marks the 70th year Anniversary of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. In the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s Virginia Key Beach located on the island of Virginia Key, was designated as a unique vacation spot strictly for blacks. Located in Dade-County, this beach was the answer (for people of color) to South Florida’s whites-only beaches pre-1960’s Civil Rights. By 1979, Virginia Key Beach had been transferred to the City of Miami and was transformed into park status. Then in 1982 the park closed and was left abandoned until 2008. During the nearly 20 years of abandonment, the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust was formed and the park saw life again! This committee of dedicated people achieved getting the park placed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Florida Historic Marker. This “Paradise Renewed†is also designated as a Historic Site by the Miami Historic & Environmental Preservation Board! Today, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is an anchor in the rebirth of the beautiful natural island of Virginia Key, “Miami’s Central Parkâ€!

From 1960-1962, over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland in what became the largest recorded child refugee exodus in the Western Hemisphere—an event that remained essentially unknown for over 30 years. Fearing their children’s indoctrination by Fidel Castro’s newly installed socialist and revolutionary government, parents entrusted their children’s fate with government and religious organizations in the U.S. Some children would reunite with their parents quickly, others after years of separation, and still others never saw their parents again. Experience the history of this event through video testimonies by the now grown children and artifacts such as letters, photographs, and other personal items documenting the stories of what became known as “Operation Pedro Pan.†In partnership with Operation Pedro Pan Group, Inc.

We’re celebrating 4 years of being active in the Miami arts and culture scene with an event that brings together all the elements we love in our city: Art, Music, Beer and Food.
While there are many private collections focusing on Latin American, Caribbean, and other cultural art movements in the region, none specifically focus on artists who have made Miami their home. As Yo Miami’s four year anniversary approaches, it will unveil its biggest project to date: the Yo Miami Permanent Collection, aimed at rectifying this lapse.
“What Remains” the first exhibition for the collection is indicative of its mission to document the evolution of the Miami art scene in an effort to expose the immense talent that has grown out of South Florida. This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?
Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

Victor Deupi is a Cuban American architect and architectural historian dedicated to promoting representational painting as a critical component of contemporary art and architecture. Inspired by Italy’s majestic cities, monuments, and landscapes – as well as the preceding generations of architects and artists who immersed themselves in the grandeur of Bell’Italia – his watercolors and paintings represent the timeless expression of architectural form and space. Painted largely in situ, Deupi’s works capture the spirit of art, architecture, and landscape while providing compelling vistas onto classical culture’s enduring legacy in the modern age.
Dr. Deupi received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia, a Master of Architecture from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Architectural History & Theory from the University of Pennsylvania. Presently he is a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Miami, and his book, Architectural Temperance: Spain and Rome, 1700-1759, was published by Routledge in 2015.
This exhibit featuring over 20 original works, opens on Friday, June 5 – Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables Gallery Night Live at the Museum.
