Mother and Son (Mat i syn/ Ìà òü è ñûÃ)(Russia/1997)
With Gudrun Geyer and Alexei Ananishnov Mother and Son is a love story about the deep affection that exists between a mother and her son, which Sokurov portrays as the greatest love in the world: primal, life-giving and pure. The characters are seen within and against a landscape of melancholy beauty, which Sokurov uses like a German Romantic painter. When the mother dies, the son is left entirely alone in a world which offers little comfort.
“ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER SEEN!”- Combustible Celluloid
“SOKUROV IS WHAT CINEMA CAN BE AT ITS GREATEST!”- Susan Sontag
“**** One of those rare works that extends the art of film, suggesting for all its melancholy that movies do have a future.” – Dave Kehr, DAILY NEWS

Sure, all the big fairs are great, but check these out and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. PooL Art Fair at the Cavalier Hotel is definitely one of my favorites. DEC 04 THU: Opening Night Reception!
8:30-10pm: A Walk “Temps sur tempsâ€
BERLIN 1993-1996 by LESLY HAMILTON
A photographic/audio-visual installation

“Before questioning, I found myself drawn to quite a bleak attraction when meandering between Postdammer Platz and Unter den Linden in Berlin: the “EST” underground stations reopened after twenty nine years in darkness. Mythical places, these were penciled-in on my map until then. High above the vast gloomy no-man’s land was the big round Deutsche S-Bahn up on a pole at the entrance, and only the aroma of grilled “bockwurst” from the kiosk nearby uplifted the scene. I was engaged on a path leading to an obsessional quest about signs and tracks of time and the ephemeral traces of man, no doubt inspired by these surroundings where the burden of history had left its marks. It became my territory, without counting how often I would come back from Paris by night train, more often by bus. I remained attentive like the hunter waiting for prey, like the archaeologist seeking new pieces. The swift indifference or aloof respect of passers-by gave me the incentive to pursue with determination a long walk originally never planned.â€â€”Lesly Hamilton
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.
DEC 05 FRI:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur tempsâ€
8:30-11pm: CHINA: The Rising Tide
A film by ROBERT ADANTO, with ZHANG O
“Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide shows the world how China’s contemporary artists are making sense of their crazy “brave new worldâ€, the improbable mash-up of totalitarianism and capitalism gone wild. An often surprising and thought-provoking documentary, the featured artists throw down a collective glove to the rest of the world and declare their Sino-centric Renaissance. The rest of us better make an effort to grasp what their work is about, or get out of the way. An “eye-opener†in every sense of the word, if you are an artist, curator, or teacher be sure to catch this film.â€â€”Mark Lynch, Host of “Inquiry†on WIC. The Rising Tide was shot in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen in the summer of 2006 and completed in October of 2007 and was recently part of CHINA NOW in the United Kingdom, as part of Constant Stream: China 08 at the Royal College of Art in London, where it screened with a film by acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. See two excerpts of the film HERE
The film will be followed by Q&A with director Robert Adanto
and artist Zhang O.

DEC 06 SAT:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur tempsâ€
8:30-9:30pm: Trance
A sound and video experience by PEARL GLUCK

Trance is a multimedia site specific installation which explores a neighborhood from the inside out. Using documentary video and found sound, Trance blurs the boundaries between insider and outsider, past and present, fitting in or being exiled. By partnering with local composers, Pearl Gluck creates a documentary visualscape made up of found images and sounds collected in the specific neighborhoods over the course of one week. Two of the Trance installations will be featured this evening: Trance: plac Z.ydowski, Krakow which visits what’s left on the 200 year old once Jewish market square in Kazimierz, and Trance: Eldridge Street, New York, which visits the Lower East Side’s interconnected and still separate Asian and Jewish communities. In the spirit of ambiguity and confusion, we will also feature another soundscape, a “soundwalk†through Hasidic Williamsburg hosted by Pearl Gluck. . .with separate walks for men and women.
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.
9:40pm, 10:20pm, 11pm: Speaker Box
A performance in a transparent cube by BELAXIS BUIL (showtimes: 15 min. each)
The idea behind “Speaker Box” is to manipulate sound waves into becoming a source of energy or language. In this instance I become a foreign object which is contained within the parameters I know exist. I use the the sounds composed as music to entice the viewer into a mind trip of where I stand within my territory. The speakers that are placed around myself and facing the audience create “voice boxes”, that ultimately become sound barriers and lost translations.
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.
07 SUN:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur tempsâ€
8:30-10pm: Parallax
A triptych screen projection by ROSALIND SCHNEIDER
1973 16mm 21 min. (transferred to digital format)
Concept, Camera, Editing: Rosalind Schneider
Score: Michael Dreyfuss
Choreography: Edith Stephen
Performance: The Edith Stephen Dance Company

Parallax is a dance film that explores the sensuous flow of the female and male body. Formal relationships achieve a visual extension in space through concave mirror reflection and the juxtaposition of three projections. The dancers separate and come together to abstract each other in strong compositional movement and rich color. Their bodies superimposed in black and white
negative and color create a surrealistic environment that defines the synchronous flow within the three screens. Recipient of the 2008 Women’s Film Preservation Award Grant
“Parallax is at once invitingly sensual and conceptually arresting.”-Washington Post
“Pictorially similar to an enormous fresco, Parallax moves its characters through a dance without time and perhaps without end.” Anna Canepa, -Art Workers Newsletter
“Parallax is like a Reubens or a Renoir, it is so explicitly voluptuous.”
-Holly Beye, Woodstock Times
“It is a beautiful film.” -Jonas Mekas, The Village Voice

OPENING RECEPTION FOR
Art Déco: Un Tour de France
Photographs by Alice Goldhagen
The style that became known as Art Deco first came to the attention of the world in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. While the Art Deco style is perhaps best known in its architectural expression, artists and designers also incorporated elements of the style into their designs for such diverse items as jewelry, textiles, furniture, graphic arts, fashion, and transportation.
Miami-based visual artist and photographer Alice Goldhagen brings a 21st century perspective to Art Deco architecture and ornamentation throughout France. Her photographs evoke the elegance and sophistication of the 1920s and 30s.
The exhibit is open daily (except Mondays) from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, until 03 January 2009. Free admission.
Art Déco: Un Tour de France is made possible with the generous support of Rex Art, Dreyfus Ashby & Co. and the Alliance Francaise of Miami.
Location: Art Deco Education Center at Historic City Hall, 1130 Washington Av, Miami Beach

Back to Paradise started back 2003 @ Laundry Bar during WMC 2003
Since it’s been always a successful event! It’s in memory of the NYC –Club Paradise Garage!
The Music
The unique and eclectic style of disco and dance musics played at the Garage gave rise to the descriptive terms “garage,” “garage style” and “garage classic” (to describe a record that was made famous or is associated with the Paradise Garage). When the term “garage music” is used in reference to the Paradise Garage, it does not exclusively mean house music, although certain house tracks may be considered to be garage classics. It will be a wide variety of Funk, Rare Grooves, Garage, Classics as well as the actual Soulful and intelligent House music which naturally would select a more mature crowd.
The DJ’s are nationally and internationally as well as locally renowned Artists, such as
“Maestro†DAVID SOLERO – Good Peoples Entertainment, best known for his amazing sets at the Beach Radio and its hay days and actually for the
“SoBe Soul†events @ 305 Music Lounge (former Laundry Bar) as well as the
“Local Underground†(Downtown Miami)
And RON D *8* LIM – Power Of Love Productions, best known for his numerous special events at Stints such as Nikki Beach Café, The Raleigh, Shine, Spiegelworld, Mansion, B.E.D, Karu & Y Ultralounge, The Vagabond(Miami-Beach) The Tunnel, Twilo, Vinyl and Cielo (NYC) as well as been titled a House Music Pioneer by New Times (Humberto Guida)!

About DJ DISCIPLE:
To try to categorize Disciple is pointless, such is his diverse talent. Happily surging between dance music genres, he’s the only DJ in New York that plays music for both the traditional and trendy scenes. His UK profile is legendary, working in more clubs than any American DJ to ever grace those shores. For the past 12 year Disciple played in at least fifty clubs a year for the last ten years. With his music and DJ performances known all over the world, it’s been Disciple’s voice that has become the catalyst for quality dance music in the last two years. The voice behind ’Work it out’, ‘Changes’, ‘Rise up’ and his new appearance on ‘Destination’ added another notch to his career. Nominated for 2008 Beatport artist of the year, Disciple’s 2006 Ibiza smash hit ‘Work It Out’ got picked up by Universal’s House- Trained records in the UK and play-listed on Radio1 while appearing on MTV at the same time. Disciple’s last release “Rise up†was another underground anthem thanks to remixers Jesse Garcia and Dub Deluxe who bought the record to number one in Spain. Roger Sanchez championed the record so long that he put it on his Release Yourself compilation. Even with the labels notoriety, Disciple’s presence in New York has not slowed down.
With the world literally his oyster Disciple is reassuringly grounded as to his future and his role in general in dance music: “For me it’s important to remember that DJing made me what I am and that’s always the first for me. I see dance music going through a very big change shortly. It can’t stay the way it is and I aim to change with it. You have to. Ultimately it’s all music and if you love and understand music, you’ll know that it’s fluid, forever flowing, forever changing. It’s wonderful to embrace that and go with the flow but yet always be original, always be yourself.

After our Miami Beach premier and a successful New York City fair in March, Art Now Fair is looking forward to continuing to support established and emerging galleries committed to thinking outside the box and experimenting with the artwork and artists they represent.
Art Now Fair will take place at the ocean-front South Seas Hotel located at 1751 Collins Avenue. The South Seas Hotel is located in the heart of the art deco district and next to other major fairs, including Art Basel, Bridge Art Fair, INK Miami and Aqua. The South Seas Hotel boasts an ocean front view from its luxurious poolside cafe and lounge and is considered among the best boutique hotels in Miami Beach.
Continuing to represent diverse galleries, Art Now Fair will feature over 40 contemporary exhibitors from across the U.S. and International. Galleries will exhibit in spacious rooms on the first and second floors of the hotel as well as in booths in the front lobby and the poolside terrace. We are excited to build upon our reputation as a diverse fair offering a unique selection of galleries and artists to the public while maintaining a comfortable and open atmosphere.
Art Now Fair will be hosting an opening reception in the lobby of the South Seas Hotel. The reception will take place on Friday, December 5th, 2008, from7 – 9 pm, and is free and open to the public. It will benefit Neat Stuff, Miami based organization helping abused and other at – risk children.
Art Now Fair looks forward to our second year in Miami Beach and hopes to continue to inspire viewers and encourage them to experience art in a new way. By opening the lines of communication between artist and viewer, we hope to encourage the growth of artists and galleries who are thinking of art in new and innovative ways.

Art Loves Architecture: David Adjaye

The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Invitation cards available at VIP and Information Desks.
Limited seating. Door opens 8.30 p.m.
Information | Florida Office Art Basel Miami Beach
Tel. +1/305-674 1292
This year’s Art Loves Architecture features British architect David Adjaye, who started his internationally respected practice Adjaye Architects in London in 1994. He has collaborated with artists such as Chris Ofili at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and Olafur Eliasson at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and has, among many other projects, completed the Nobel Peace Center, Oslo, in 2005 and the Museum for Contemporary Art, Denver, in 2007. Art Loves Architecture will be a conversation moderated by Aaron Betsky, curator of the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, featuring Adjaye with artists Matthew Richie and Teresita Fernandez, who in their work both cross the borders of art and architecture. Richie’s vast installations blur art and architecture, like “The Morning Line†at the 3rd Seville Biennale in 2008, which was developed together with architects Aranda\Lasch and Arup AGU. Artist Teresita Fernandez treats art and architecture as collaborative fields and has engaged in cooperations with architects on various projects. The panel will discuss the roles, responsibilities and authorship in the collaborations that all three of them are undertaking and explore how the ideas of art and architecture converge, what architects and artists can learn from each other, and what kind of practice could potentially emerge from this blurring of previously demarcated practices.

This year’s Art Loves Film presents the extraordinary 2008 documentary “Herb and Dorothy†(directed by Megumi Sasaki) telling the story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and his wife Dorothy, a librarian – an ordinary couple of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history, which they then donated to the National Gallery in Washington D.C. In forty years, the Vogels had managed to accumulate over 4,000 pieces, filling every corner of their living space from the bathroom to the kitchen. They proved themselves visionaries: Many artists they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned. Their circle includes: Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert and Sylvia Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, and Lawrence Weiner.

Born and raised in Brittany, France, 25-years-old musician Yelle is known for her spirited, explicit lyrics, laid over a pulsating pop electro beat. This musical prowess was first showcased on her MySpace page in 2005 with the track “Je Veux te Voirâ€, responding to a macho song by French rapper Cuizinier. After her first solo performance at trendy Paris venue “Paris Paris†last year, Yelle is the emerging artist in France’s new girl-power scene. Yelle is the stage name of Julie Budet, a feminised version of the acronym YEL, “You enjoy life”. In combination with the explicit lyrics, her flashy appearance and electrifying performances were a great success, not only in the technotronic scene but also in the European charts. Her songs echo a certain nostalgia for the golden years of French electro-pop but are boosted by the groove and vibe of this shameless nouveau rave femme.

This Thanksgiving Weekend you are invited to Gotsoul Saturdays at Nikki Beach Miami 11/29/08
** EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON BETWEEN 12PM AND 7PM **
**NO COVER HAPPY HOUR BETWEEN 4PM-7PM**
***
Thanks to all who made it out last weekend! We are back to do it all over again this and every Saturday.
This week we welcome Julius ‘The Mad Thinker’ from Chicago.
It gets dark earlier so we can expect a Sunset Session during our Happy Hour
http://www.myspace.com/themadthinker
If you close your eyes, open your ears, open your mind, and let your
body flow, you will find yourself in a new plane previously
unexplored. Seamlessly blended tracks vibrate your spine while
soothing your soul. Many people refer to the genre as house, but
Julius the Mad Thinker makes it home. Approaching each endeavor with
heart, soul and passion, Julius builds you up gradually through loops
of energy bursts and just when you reach your climax, he drops you
back to a lounge state awaiting the next climb to the peak.
With Julius the Mad Thinker, you must “Witness the Dynamic” . . .
This illustrious dynamic was first identified by the founder of Large
Music, Jeff Craven, when he invited Julius to open and close the first
annual Get Large party at the Winter Music Conference. From there,
John Davis, a top NYC promoter and co-founder of Body&SOUL, witnessed
the dynamic when he came upon Julius and installed him as a resident
of Sunday Sessions in NYC. Chicago house pioneer Chip E, witnessed the
dynamic when he invited Julius to be interviewed for house music
documentary, the Unusual Suspects, to which Julius was the youngest
interviewee to appear. And NYC’s Undaground Archives Choice Award gave
tribute to the dynamic when Julius was awarded the “Best Emerging
Talent” recognition.
First exposed to dance music in the sixth grade, Julius went on to
become a DJ and producer in 1994. Since that time, Julius has
developed a charisma behind the turntables that can only be described
as a dynamic that fills the room. Coupled with “the Mad Thinker”
title, which was given to him by MC Miles Bentley of Rec Center,
Julius makes no move as an artist haphazardly. Be it the tracks he
plays, the order in which he plays them or the EQing which brings out
a melody or rhythm in a whole new way – all these elements which
comprise his dynamic are meticulously plotted throughout his
improvisational creative process.
As the co-founder and partner of the internationally renowned
promotional and DJ collective, 3Degrees Global, and a resident of the
3Degrees “Some Call It House . . . We Call It Home” tour, the dynamic
has been witnessed throughout the most notorious clubs of house
music’s homeland in Chicago, including Smartbar, Soundbar, Sonotheque,
Ohm, The Note and Zentra. Across the nation the dynamic has been
witnessed on the main stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival,
Marques Wyatt’s DEEP event in LA, Soul Revival in Boston, Devotion at
The End Up & Pink in San Francisco, Club Five in Washington DC, Pearl
at Nikki Beach in Miami, Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega’s Roots at Cielo
in New York as well as stops in Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and France. In
addition the dynamic has cross pollinated with house legends via
Julius DJing alongside Frankie Knuckles, Joe Claussell, Farley
“Jackmaster” Funk, Lil’ Louis, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Derrick May
and Ron Trent amongst others.
As he continues to manifest this vision in music, Julius says, “My
purpose in this journey of music and life is to help others get to
places that they never imagined possible, and as a DJ, I’m here to
live that message as an example.”

Set Tonight: A Very Special Evening with Miss Nine 11/28/08
Season is finally here and I’m very excited to let you know about tonight’s amazing performance by Miss Nine at Set.
Miss Nine began her career, not as a deejay, but as a model. At 16, she made it to the finals of one of the largest modeling pageants in Germany, and soon after secured a worldwide contract with Elite Model Management. Longing for more, her passion for music led Kristin Schrot to move to Amsterdam where she dubbed herself Miss Nine and began pursuing a career in the electronic industry. With her eclectic taste in music, ranging from energetic grooves with plenty of vocals to a deeper, progressive sound, Miss Nine is sure to turn heads and move feet anywhere she performs. Let her get you dancing the night away this 28th of November as she comes to take over the decks at SET Nightclub.
Join Eric Milon, Antonio Misuraca and myself for a very special evening also featuring our favorite local DJs Pedro and Chicco Secci.
For table reservations or VIP list, please call my office at 305 695 4410 or go to rsvp@capponigroup.com
I hope to see you there

Ballast
(Lance Hammer/USA/2008)

With Michael J. Smith Sr, JimMyron Ross, Tarra Riggs, Johnny McPhail
BALLAST is one of those rare films that maximize the medium through an aesthetic of understatement. Every frame is deliberately and beautifully composed, every cut artfully and economically executed—not only to transmit a quietly gripping story but to reveal characters’ layered emotional experiences and the specific textures and sensations of their locales. In the
cold, winter light of a rural Mississippi Delta township, a man’s suicide radically transforms three characters’ lives and throws off-balance what has long been a static arrangement among them. With circumstances thrusting them into proximity, a subtle interdependence and common purpose emerge for Marlee and Lawrence as they navigate grief, test new waters, and tentatively move forward.

jojoflores has come a long way from his original Montreal residencies in the 80’s. Now reaching globally, he is current, dedicated, and consistently collaborating with international DJ’s, producers, club owners, high-brow and corporate affairs. He represents and purveys soulful dance music in every way possible: he is CEO of Gotsoul Recordings, founder of 9 year Therapy Soirée, and his CD compilations. This winning combination has managed to break musical barriers that otherwise would never have come down without his trademark packaging of music & events.
jojoflores’ hard work and dedication has won him an established reputation in the music industry and has awarded him multiple residencies at famed clubs world wide, including New York’s Cielo, as well as others in San Francisco (Pink), Chicago, Toronto, Miami, Los Angeles (Deep), Hawaii (Lotus), Cape Town, Dubai & Athens.
He was voted “Best International DJ” 4 years running by NYC’s Underground Archives.
His musical influences range from: Chaka Khan, Prince, Stevie Wonder, A Tribe Called Quest, to the Beatles. jojoflores, like Afrika Bambaataa is searching for “The Perfect Beatâ€, and his close connection with the pioneers -as well as the new jack producers- of soulful dance music brings him closer to this goal. He wants “to put the message out there, being optimistic in a chaotic world where positive times are hard to come by.” jojoflores does this–he brings optimism without fail every time he performs.

Renaissance and Baroque Painting and Sculpture from the Bass Museum of Art Collection Now on View
The Bass Museum presents new installations of paintings and sculptures from the permanent collection, installed in two pristine galleries on the first level. The first exhibition showcases The Sacred and Sublime: Renaissance and Baroque Art from the Collection, that highlights important examples of Northern European Renaissance and Baroque art. Works on view span three centuries and include religious paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) and Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638). Also see the museum’s 16th century tapestry masterpiece The Salute before the Tournament, a prime example of King Henry’s favorite artistic medium that was purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in the early twentieth- century before it came into John Bass’s collection.
The South Gallery is the newest addition to the Bass galleries. Overlooking Collins park, this intimate space showcases Reflections of the Renaissance and Antiquity, that includes works such as Benjamin West’s Anne, Countess of Northampton, and Her Daughter and Eduard Veith’s The Holy Family (Rest on the Flight into Egypt) which are direct references to Italian Renaissance compositions. Also on view are works by artists such as John Hoppner, Thomas Barker and Paul Manship that celebrate the lasting influence of the Italian Renaissance.
Both installations are curated by Ruth Grim, Curator of Collections

The Rising Tide, a documentary film about China’s exploding contemporary art scene 12/5/08, 12/7/08
What: The Rising Tide, a documentary film about China’s exploding contemporary art scene
1st Screening: Friday, December 5, 2008, 8:30 pm at Miami Beach Cinematheque, 512 Espanola Way, Miami Beach
2nd Screening: Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 6:00 PM at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Miami, FL November, 18 2008 — Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide, screening this weekend at Art Basel, captures the complex cultural implications of the global art market’s insatiable taste for Chinese Contemporary Art.
Adanto’s documentary, recently screened at the UK’s China Now, as part of Constant Stream China08 at the Royal College of Art, addresses China’s economic and cultural metamorphosis through the work of the Middle Kingdom’s most talented video artists and photographers. China’s place as an emerging global superpower directly relates to the “rising tide” of Chinese Contemporary Art. The film will screen twice this weekend; on December 5th at 8:30pm at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, and on December 7th at 6:00pm at the Colony Theater.
The Rising Tide integrates the work of internationally recognized artists such as Cao Fei, Xu Zhen, Wang Qingsong, Chen Qiulin and Zhang O. It is narrated by Rosalind Chao and Gordon Chang.
Born in an era of rapid societal change, the Chinese avant-garde sees the new China as a place where materialism and consumer culture are all pervasive. New explorations in art have accompanied the post-Mao reforms and economic growth. The balance of Western influence and traditional Chinese aesthetic remains conflicted. Add the complex cultural implications of the current market mania for Chinese Contemporary Art, and you have a truly compelling story which exposes the confusion and ambiguity that characterize the new China.
By allowing the artists and curators working in China to talk about the movement themselves, Adanto is able to convey the curious nature of this cultural phenomenon.
“Adanto’s surprisingly grim film highlights both the vitality and urgency of China’s burgeoning new culture while allowing its subjects to speak of the darker and more painful aspects of change,” says Gerry Mak in the on-line publication Flavorpill.
The film seamlessly blends the artwork and the voices of the key-players in the Chinese Contemporary art scene without much intrusion from the filmmaker. “I wanted artists whose work contained powerful messages with the ring of truth. I was looking for art that communicated the confusion of a society in rapid transition or work which commented on the materialism pervading Chinese society. I still wanted beauty and originality, but not at the price of content. The art was going to be used in the film to advance my arguments, so I needed pictures and images that matter,” Adanto stated.
The Rising Tide is an incredibly timely examination of China’s growing prominence in international culture. In a climate of industrialization, urbanization, and increased freedom of expression, Chinese Contemporary Art has emerged as arguably the most vital and imaginative cultural force in the world today. “The rest of us better make an effort to grasp what their work is about, or get out of the way,” says Mark Lynch, host of WICN’s inquiry, “[The Rising Tide is] an ‘eye-opener’ in every sense of the word, if you are an artist, curator or art teacher be sure to catch this film.”
An open discussion and contextualization of this significant movement, The Rising Tide is certainly a must-see. For more information about the film, visit www.therisingtidefilm.com.

New World Symphony Previews Special Offer 11/22/08
In anticipation of this season’s first Sounds of the Times concert, we would like to thank you, our Previews reader, by combining two things we know you will love: great music and discounted tickets!
Two dynamic composers from “across the pond,” Thomas Adès and Gerald Barry, join the Fellows this week to bring their creations to life — including two U.S. premieres by Barry, one of which features seamless soprano Barbara Hannigan.
We are so excited about this collaboration that we would like to offer you a 20% discount on your tickets! Take advantage of this offer by mentioning “Previews” when calling our box office at 305-673-3331. This offer is good through Friday, November 21, at 5 PM.*
Join us and be a part of musical history!
Saturday, November 22 at 7:30 PM
Lincoln Theatre
Previews discounted ticket price: $12!

Only 37 years young, Thomas Adès is a vibrant and influential figure in contemporary music. As a talented composer, conductor and pianist, Adès has been called “the next Benjamin Britten” and “the great new voice of British music.” He joins NWS to present two of his own large-scale works, These Premises Are Alarmed — dubbed a “firecracker of intensity” — and Tevot — a large-scale symphonic journey based on the title’s Hebrew translation of “arks” or “place of refuge.”

Canadian soprano, Barbara Hannigan joins NWS to reprise her role of Madame X in Barry’s The Stronger, a part the requires passionate dexterity in portraying frantic vocal explosions, as well as lullaby-like cadences. Ms. Hannigan received rave reviews for her portrayal of the unstable Madame X at The Stronger’s world premiere in Paris in 2007. We are thrilled to have her with us this week in this chaotic, yet widely-entertaining character.

The music of Gerald Barry, a well-kept secret in the U.S., is full of musical and theatrical imagination. As the leading Irish composer of his generation, Barry’s musical genius has been described as “part mad Stravinsky, part mad Handel.” With Thomas Adès at the podium, Barry’s two U.S. premieres, The Stronger and Diner, are sure to be an experience you won’t want to miss.
Special Offer for Previews Readers! Mention “Previews” and receive 20% off your tickets for this Saturday’s concert, November 22. With this discount your tickets will only be $12!! Call the box office today at 305-673-3331.
*Previously purchased tickets for November 22 cannot be refunded or discounted.

And…the November MBC photographic exhibition:
“The Frida Files†by LEO MATIZ

Leo Matiz (1917-1998) was born in Aracateca, Colombia, but was known internationally as a “citizen of the worldâ€. The intense and stark compositional beauty of his photographs are world famous, particularly in some of the iconic portraits of our time, and especially in his immortal legendary portraits of Frida Kahlo. Matiz was a master at depicting the internal passions of his subjects, with graphic grace and sharp contrasting
elements defining their features. Like Sergei Eisenstein’s gorgeously photographed film Que Viva Mexico! (which screens November 30th as a companion piece and closing night event to this MBC exhibition, and is accompanied by the modernist electronic music of DJ Maximus 3000), the images of Leo Matiz capture history told through faces. These images are on display courtesy of Alejandra Matiz, the artist’s daughter, who will be a special guest on closing night. The photographs are also for sale.

Pool Art Fair Miami Artists Wanted – Last Call
Now in the final stage of selecting artists for the Pool Art Fair in Miami. See below.
Please forward
*
FULL HOUSE | POOL ART FAIR | MIAMI BEACH 2008
Frere Independent is proud to present its annual independent art fair, PooL. This is the fourth edition of the PooL Art Fair in Miami, and it is slated for December 5, 6 & 7 2008 at the Cavalier Hotel, during the art week in Miami. Of the many fairs that are happening at this time, PooL is the only one that is presenting the work of independent artists.
The simple, modest approach of the PooL Art Fair offers an exciting alternative to the “art fair” experience for dealers and collectors as well as the general public. PooL’s purpose is to create a meeting ground for outstanding artists, primarily those who do not yet have gallery representation. The show will be comprised of young contemporary art dealers, artist agents, emerging galleries, artists’ collectives, and non-profit organizations. Hence, the fair will serve as an invaluable resource for the artistic community and the general public. Exhibitors will be given rooms in which to display their work, creating a unique and intimate setting. They will share with the public their most recent works: unique, original, and challenging art.
PooL is produced by Frere Independent, a not-for-profit art organization, that provides new avenues of dissemination and widespread visibility to emerging and independent artists who do not currently have gallery representation.
Originally envisioned as an event that would promote camaraderie in the arts by providing a meeting ground and market place for artists, art dealers, curators, and the public, the goal of the PooL Art Fair is to engage the public by making art accessible, and to encourage them to support artists. It’s imperative that artists be able to eat, read, and pay their rent just like anyone else.
PooL Miami 08 | Hours
Thursday December 4 Check-in time 3pm
Friday December 5 4pm- 10pm
Saturday December 6 4pm- 10pm
Sunday December 7 4pm- 10p

Participation in PooL Art Fair
The deadline for sending in the application has been extended. However, space is limited and rooms will be assigned as we receive and accept applicants. The show could fill up before the deadline arrives, so please do not wait for the last minute to apply!
To Apply:
Please submit an initial application to receive further information for submitting samples of your artwork. You can access the application at: http://www.divafair.com/divastore/home.php?cat=48 Under Pool Art Fair click on applications and follow the necessary instructions.
All applicants will be reviewed by the PooL Video Miami Beach 2008 Selection Committee, a peer group of international curators. Only the exhibitors who are accepted by the Selection Committee may exhibit at the fair.
Important notification from the fair management
Although art fairs opened to non-represented artists were a tradition in France at the time of Courbet’s famous Salon des Independents, they were non-existent in the U.S. until the creation of the PooL art fair. It is important that all artists understand that PooL is an exchange platform created for the artist. It is with the communication effort of each artist that the fair will be successful. In other words, each artist is responsible for his or her own success. Please invite every one you know, every one you meet and most importantly, every one you want to know. Space is limited, rooms will be assigned as we receive and accept applicants. The show could fill up before the deadline arrives, so please do not wait for the last minute to apply!

Giant Step presents Anané and Band at the gorgeous Florida Room at DELANO. Music provided by Louie Vega.
In the increasingly merciless music industry of the 21st century, Anané shines bright as an example of what a love for life, dedication to music and hard work can bring worldwide success. Chosen by Billboard Magazine as one of the “2008 Faces to Watch” columnists Kerri Mason raves, “Combining earthiness with glamour and roots-deep house music knowledge with pop wise diversity, Anané could be the first up-from-the-nightclub superstar since Madonna.” 2008’s Ananésworld is the multi-talented singer-songwriter debut album on the US’s pioneering Tommy Boy, and with it the world is set to discover the heartfelt, soulful and eclectic musical stylings of one of music’s shining lights.
The term ‘legend’ is applied to many DJ’s and producers without credence; Louie Vega is one of the elite few who truly warrant the title. From the Latin influences that shaped the early stages of his career, through his inspired partnership with Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez as Master at Work, to his winning a Grammy in 2006, Louie Vega is one of the true pioneers of House music.

MDPL presents Orson Welles in “War of the Worlds” 10/30/08
Thursday 30 October 7:00 pm
WAR OF THE WORLDS
On the evening of 30 October 1938, radio listeners in the New York area turned on their sets to hear a program of popular music. However, news breaks that interrupted the programming told of a horrific battle being waged by aliens who had landed from Mars. The ensuing panic on the eastern seaboard became one of the country’s largest outbreaks of mass hysteria, and public reaction in the following days ranged from bravos to brickbats.
The source of the panic was an inventive radio play produced by the Mercury Theatre company and its 23-year old director, Orson Welles. Although the program was identified as a radio drama based upon the novel War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, the realistic effect of the use of the newscast format fooled many listeners into believing it was real.

Did Welles deliberately and irresponsibly create a dangerous regional panic, or did he skillfully expose a gullible public that believed everything that was labeled “news”? Come listen to the original broadcast from seventy years ago to make your own determination. Free admission.

ArtCenter Presents ‘Just then, Mischief made its way outside…’ 10/25/08
Opening Reception, Saturday, October 25th, 2008
800 Lincoln Road Gallery, 7 – 10 PM
Free and open to the public.
The story ‘Just then Mischief made its way outside…’ is a fictional tale of a small humanoid creature aptly named Mischief and personified by artist Venessa Monokian’s work. Mischief laid in wait underneath people’s houses plotting to join the topside world shown in Luis Garcia-Nerey’s sculpture Bridge Elsewhere. Every day planning to escape from its hive (Natasha Duwin) making plans that appear to us as patterns made by water or erosion (Jill Hotchkiss). Eventually Mischief finally figured out how to break from its suburban bonds using characters created in the works of Luisa Mesa, Neysa Jin-Felker, and Nina Surel, leaving the viewer to wonder, ‘just what will Mischief do now that its bonds have been broken’.
This show was constructed as a collaborative effort between the newly juried artists ushered into the ArtCenter/ South Florida from the year 2007 and the current Director of Exhibitions Jacquenette Arnette.
All the artists involved were juried into the Artist-in-Residence program in 2007 and have successfully completed and fully integrated into working in the ArtCenter’s community of artists.

Giant Step presents Nikka Costa at the gorgeous Florida Room at Delano 10/13/08
Giant Step presents Nikka Costa at the gorgeous Florida Room at DELANO.
Growing up as legendary producer Don Costa’s (Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra) daughter, Nikka Costa broke on the scene in the early 2000’s with an intuitive sensibility for the soulful sound that has kept her place as a forerunner among the new breed of soul singers. She toured with Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Coldplay and Beck, recorded with Mark Ronson, was nominated for an MTV Music Award and had hit singles in Europe. Known for her dynamic and energetic live performances, Nikka’s voice and presence has often been compared with Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan and Sly Stone.
Nikka will release Pebble to a Pearl on Oct 14th through her own Go Funk Yourself Records in conjunction with Stax Records. With this record, Nikka comes into her most empowering work of genre-defying genius yet, a quintessential collection of soul, blues, funk & pop infused tracks which marks Nikka’s triumphant return onto the scene. The album blends sounds and textures in an undefined concoction that speaks as profoundly to a discriminating musician’s ear as it does to the casual listener.
