Forman’s colorful and impressionist works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

Dance NOW MiamiMakes Broward Center Debut 5/17/19

Dance NOW MiamiMakes Broward Center Debut

Broward Center for the Performing Arts
201 SW 5th Ave,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312
Buy Tickets
Cost: 35

Friday, May 17 at 8: Dance NOW! Miami comes to the Broward Center with four works: Bridges NOT Walls, The Shifting Weight of Water, (B)Orgia: Decadence and Decay, and Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre.

Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When one of South Florida’s leading dance companies, Dance NOW! Miami, performs for the first time at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater, both meanings of the word will be invoked. Taking as its jumping off point the recent political struggles and turmoil that have divided America, Bridges NOT Walls, choreographed by Dance NOW! Artistic Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten, is an investigation of the human condition. “Differences among people cause us to fear one another, separating us, instead of allowing us to find common ground,” says Baumgarten. Inspired by the Barack Obama quote – “We must guard against a tribalism that is built on us against them” – the work explores ways to overcome these natural instincts and to find compassion for one another in a diverse society.

The evening also features three other signature works from Dance NOW!, including the world premiere of Salterini’s The Shifting Weight of Water, a poetic ensemble work for six members of the company, built around the music of South African composer Phillip Miller. Two Broward premieres round out the program: Baumgarten and Salterini’s jointly created (B)ORGIA: Decadence & Decay was inspired by the real life story of the famous Italian Renaissance-era family, and Baumgarten’s Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre a collaboration with composer Federico Bonacossa.

Details:
WHEN: Friday, May 17 at 8:00 pm
WHERE: Broward Centter Amaturo Theater, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale

History Fort Lauderdale Honors The Forman Family & Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steven Glassman at History Makers 2019

New River Inn at History Fort Lauderdale
231 SW 2nd Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Cost: $100 per person

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor The Forman Family, Broward County pioneers and early developers, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman during its History Makers 2019 fundraiser set for Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the New River Inn. The event spotlights individuals who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

For over a century, the Forman family has been major contributors to the development of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Ever since Hamilton and Blanche Collins Forman arrived in 1910, they, and their descendants, have played leading roles in the fields of agriculture, business, water management, education, public service and philanthropy. Dr. Charles Forman and his brother Hamilton Forman were Broward’s most powerful political figures from the 1950s to the 1990s. When their pioneer dairy farms and pastures were closed to facilitate the building of Florida’s Turnpike in the mid-1950s, the family turned their attention toward education and building a world-class education complex on their land. Today, the former farmland houses campuses of Florida Atlantic University, Florida International and the University of Florida’s Broward complexes, Nova elementary, middle and high schools, Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.

Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman, has been a foremost advocate of historic preservation, arts and culture and philanthropy in Broward County for close to 25 years. For 11 years, Glassman was an administrator for the Broward County Cultural Division where he worked closely with elected officials and business leaders to further the quality of life in all of Broward’s major cities through the arts and culture. This work included serving on advisory boards in Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. He has served on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board (three years) and the Planning and Zoning Board (six years). His many years in various civic leadership positions include president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation and a seven-year tenure as the president of the Central Beach Alliance. Steve has also served as president of several beach condominium associations including his current six-year tenure at the Sapphire Condominium. He has remained focused on fixing our city’s infrastructure via smart growth and proactive future planning.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 108th birthday with cocktails, food and drink stations from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, CA Catering, LauderAle, Gran Forno and more to be announced plus themed entertainment on the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus.

History Makers 2019 is sponsored by visionary Merrimac Ventures with trailblazer support from Lochrie & Chakas P.A. and trendetters Robert Golden and Judy Stern.

Tickets for this year’s History Makers Gala are $100 (online service charges not included) and can be purchased online at http://bit.ly/HFLHistoryMakers2019 or via email at info@flhc.org. Seating is limited.

Saturday, March 16, 2019 – 8:00 p.m. John Scofeilds Combo 66 comes to Bailey Hall. Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B.

Scofield’s résumé reads like a who’s who of the last 40 years of jazz. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music, his first recording was with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. He then replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton’s band and soon he would be performing with the likes of Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, and Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis, with whom he had an influential stint from 1982-85 that placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier jazz organization, continues its 27th season of presentation, and the second season of “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall,” with the venerable JOHN SCOFIELD. The indomitable, genre-bending guitarist brings his new quartet, Combo 66, to South Florida to the delight of his legions of fans.

Bailey Hall is located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie and offers free parking. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.; they are available by visiting southfloridajazz.org or baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884. The box office and phone lines are open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 7:00 p.m. until curtain time. All performances commence at 8:00 p.m.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will host its newest visual arts exhibit entitled “Paradise from Land to Sea: Photography of JohnBob Carlos” from March 3 – May 22, 2019. Photographs artistically capturing the beauty and majesty of Florida’s coastal vistas, skies and wildlife will be on display at the New River Inn.

JohnBob Carlos, a native Floridian and photographer, captures images of Florida’s wildlife, landscapes, cultures, and waterways. His art of the lens is his means for creating a voice for Florida’s nature and preserving Florida’s culture. At a young age he felt a calling to paddle, hike, fish, and explore the Everglades. He was at home among the hammocks, swamps, strands, animals, Mangrove Islands and Florida’s wild. In recent years Carlos has become deeply concerned about the state of Florida’s nature – the devastation of these areas mostly due to money, development, pollution, business and politics. He continues to realistically document the beauty and wonder of the world around us and uses his lens to focus on the region’s need for the greater conservation and preservation of resources.

Presented by History Fort Lauderdale, bringing the stories of our diverse community to life through engaging educational experiences, innovative cultural exhibits, research and preservation of artifacts. Residents and visitors to Fort Lauderdale are invited to explore the city’s rich past that is housed in historic buildings on a lushly landscaped campus – the History Museum of Fort Lauderdale situated in the 1905 New River Inn, the 1907 Pioneer House Museum, the 1899 Ivy Cromartie Schoolhouse Museum and the Hoch Research Library, South Florida’s foremost history center housing print resources and newspapers from 1910 – present plus 400,000 archival photos, 2,500 maps and 5,000 architectural blueprints. Museum hours are Monday – Friday from noon – 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. History Fort Lauderdale is a nonprofit agency supported by memberships, grants and charitable contributions.

“A Celebration of Life, Love and Music” with Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus Honoring 100 Years of Leonard Bernstein and the Legacy of Matthew Shepard 3/17/19

“A Celebration of Life, Love and Music” with Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus Honoring 100 Years of Leonard Bernstein and the Legacy of Matthew Shepard

All Saints Episcopal Church
333 Tarpon Drive,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Cost: General admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets with priority seating are priced at $40, plus a small service fee.

The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) is honoring the 100 years of American Composer Leonard Bernstein and the legacy of Matthew Shepard – a college student who more than two decades ago was the victim of a brutal gay-hate murder – during “A Celebration of Life, Love and Music” performance on Sunday, March 17 at 5 p.m. from the All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale. A portion of show proceeds will benefit the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

While a significant portion of the evening showcases the prolific works of Bernstein, the Chorus is dedicating “Changing Hearts,” a special, six-piece collection, to Shepard and others who have been the victims of gay-hate crimes. The set features songs from some of Bernstein’s renowned Broadway musicals such as West Side Story, On the Town and Candidae. Scenes from The Laramie Project, a play that debuted in 2000 by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction of Shepard’s death, are being interspersed with the evening’s musical selections: Tonight; Something’s Coming; One Hand, One Heart; I Can Cook Too and Make Our Garden Grow.

Funding for the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. General admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets with priority seating are priced at $40, plus a small service fee.

Tickets are available for purchase online at TheFTLGMC.org or by calling (954) 832-0060.

About Michelle DiMarco
Michelle DiMarco had no idea she wanted to be an entrepreneur.
After college, DiMarco struggled finding a career that she was madly
passionate about. She sought refuge in keeping up on the latest trends
in fashion magazines and designer blogs, while styling her friends for fun.
Her muses ranged from Bridget Bardot to Diane Kruger and Carine
Roitfeld. When a retail space opened up near her home in Florida, her mom encouraged her to take a leap of (fashionable) faith. She listened closely
to her heart which encouraged her to create the Lilac And Lilies Boutique.

Michelle DiMarco, born in New Port Richey, Florida and raised by a single
mother from Cuba, learned from an early age the importance of her roots,
heritage and culture, yet to cultivate an independent spirit to evolve
and successfully follow her dreams. DiMarco graduated from Florida
Atlantic University in Boca Raton with a degree in Intercultural
Communications. During college, she pursued her passion for travel
while spending three months in Ghana, Africa for an exclusive study
abroad program. Thereafter, she continued to be inspired by exploring
new places which led her to New York City to attend The Fashion Institute
of Technology where she studied Creative Enterprise Ownership. Over
the last ten years, DiMarco has grown the brand into a shopping
destination for high quality, on-trend and affordable finds for Florida’s
fashionistas and beyond with a corresponding e-shop.

Throughout her career as an entrepreneur, DiMarco has been able to
give back in many ways as a devoted volunteer and advocate for
philanthropy. She has been nominated as one of the 100 Outstanding
Women of Broward County for three years in a row, benefitting The
Boys and Girls Club. She is active on the board of The Humane Society
of Broward County, and regularly volunteers for Kids in Distress. DiMarco
is also a recipient of The Glammy Award for her community activism
benefitting breast cancer research. DiMarco has been featured in WWD,
New York Post, Forbes, CBS, NBC, Sun Sentinel, Boca Life, the Miami
Herald and more.

DiMarco currently lives in Fort Lauderdale with her King Charles
Cavalier puppy, Lily. She enjoys living a healthy lifestyle of mind, body
and spirit – which makes DiMarco the successful, well- rounded
businesswoman that she is today.

Deerfield Beach Plays Host to Knights, Wizards, Vikings and More During Seven Exciting Themed Weekends Each with Their Own Assortment of Acts & Performances.

Come one, come all and travel back to the magical time of days past! Wether ye be Kings or Queens, Vikings or Knights, Wizards or even Muggles, your attendance is requested at the 27th annual Florida Renaissance Festival. From A.D. February 9th through March 24th, in the two-thousandth and nineteenth year you can join the merrymaking in the vast open land of Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park.

For the fourth year in a row, the timeless Florida Renaissance Festival will offer SEVEN jam-packed themed weekends to ring in its 27th season. This fantastical journey will allow attendees to be transported back into 16th-century Europe. Greeted by jesters, jugglers and jousting knights upon entering the gates, sweet melodies can be heard from every corner of the kingdom. It’s a full day of entertainment where the entire family can marvel at fan favorite acts and performances that include immersive and interactive, real audience-participation scenarios. Join in on the fun with human powered rides, artisan craft shops and enough food & drink for a royal family feast!

One of the nation’s most beloved events, with over 100,000 annual attendees and more than two million people having participated over the festival’s tenure, the Florida Renaissance Festival has devoted 27 years to capturing the essence of the Renaissance through entertainment and living history.

“We at the Florida Renaissance Festival owe our success to our loyal patrons, who have eagerly supported our mission to spread knowledge and joy using the enriched history and culture of the Renaissance,” says Bobby Rodriguez, Founder and Producer of the Florida Renaissance Festival. “Our festival provides people of all ages the chance to escape into an alternate universe with invigorating activities and our growing assortment of themed weekends.”

Rodriguez has helped the Florida Renaissance Festival set the standard for all festivals of this nature by going “beyond Renaissance.” Booking acts sprawling from the Orient to Africa, Rodriguez has brought the Festival to new heights, continuously incorporating new experiences. Led by his forward-thinking, it has expanded its arsenal of avant-garde performances and interactive weekends.

The Florida Renaissance Festival 2019 themed weekends include:

* Game of Thrones – February 9th – 11th
The night is dark and full of terrors. Dress in your favorite Westeros and Essos gear and lead your armies into victory for the greatest weekend in all the 7 Kingdoms! Winter is coming.

* Time Travelers’/Steampunk Weekend – February 16th – 18th
Kick this weekend into high “gear” as you travel back to the early nineteenth century, a time of British Victorian fashion, the American Wild West, and steam-powered machinery. Dedicated to adventurers across the centuries, board your favorite form of fantastical transportation, be it a submarine or steam powered hot air balloon. Break out those top hats, goggles, corsets, petticoats, compass bracers, and monocles and join in on a “Steampunkin'” good time. Open on President’s Day, Monday February 18th!

* Vikings and Barbarians – February 23rd and 24th
Coming from the harsh wastelands of the North, only the strongest and most courageous warriors will survive through this weekend. Fellow Scandinavian brothers and sisters will show little to no fear and enter into any skirmishes with their battleaxes in hand, all while geared in full leather and fur during this epic weekend. Onward to Valhalla!

* Bodacious Bodices & Wenches – March 2nd and 3rd
Wenches Weekend celebrates the power of women from Renaissance times. Hourglass curves and hearty attitudes were the name of the game when it meant going up against male counterparts. Bodacious bodices are welcome – maidens, damsels and all – come dressed in your best for a weekend of powerful fun!

* Swashbucklers and Sirens – March 9th – 10th
All hands ahoy! Don’t get lost at sea as this themed weekend sees our village stormed by the deadliest pirates, buccaneers and scallywags in all the seven seas. Raise your Jolly Roger and gather a crew to help in unearthing the mysteries and treasures the vast and deadly sea holds. However, anyone not prepared for a “salty” good time will be sent to walk the plank into Davey Jones’ Locker.

* Kilts & Colleens – March 16th & 17th
Embrace your fellow tribesmen with glory as you enjoy libations and sing to your heart’s content to the blaring of bagpipes. Celebrate the Celtic traditions of the Irish, Scots, Cornish and Welsh during this uniquely themed weekend that honors this group of European tribes from the Iron Age of Medieval Times!

* Magic, Witches and Wizards – March 23rd and 24th
Muggles are welcome at this most magical weekend of the Festival. Take out your wand and show off your house spirit! From lightning bolts to the Deathly Hallows, show off your Hogwarts and magical support as you take part in the fun and games. Make Dumbledore proud and search out He Who Must Not Be Named!

The 2019 season also includes a variety of fan favorite acts and performances with an invigorating entertainment lineup that includes something for everyone.

The Florida Renaissance Festival 2019 Acts & Performances include:

* NEW – The Mis-Adventurers – Comedy Sword Fighting
This comedy-adventure show, is filled with thrills, chills and heroic hijinks. Meet the dynamic sword fighting duo, and join in on the fun as they are looking for new heroes to make it to one of their Guild Recruitment meetings! Or at least helping them settle some Dueling Disagreements! Adventure onward!

* FAN FAVORITE – Kamikaze Fireflies
Comedy wrapped in lunacy wrapped in foolishness. This show is a combination of strength, physical agility and amazingly well-crafted routines, balancing classical theatrical training with disciplined circus physicality. It is a constantly changing series of routines, patter, physical impossibilities, unbelievable situations and audience interactions. They are difficult to describe and impossible to forget.

* NEW – Music the Gathering
Music The Gathering has a vast repertoire of original arrangements across multiple genres, from traditional Celtic to contemporary world and original parodies. In addition to mixed vocal harmonization, all three musicians play various folk and classical string, woodwind, and percussion instruments, which allows them to take familiar traditional songs and arrange them in unique ways. All members are actors with a strong background in comedy and improvisation, and they take pride in performing with all the energy and passion they can muster.

* NEW – The Jackdaws
The Jackdaws deliver original, contemporary, and traditional Irish Rock to audiences across the land. This trailblazing trio will excite and have you coming back for more with their driving melodies and relentlessly aggressive lyrics. More Irish than a drunken roar, and a damned sight messier.

* NEW – Lady Ophelia’s Dance Party & Maypole Dance
Lady Ophelia invites you to flirt… the old-fashioned way as she is well versed and most skilled in all the current dances and royal entertainments. However, don’t forget to join in on the wonderful opportunity of going round the Maypole as you decorate the pole in spring colors. Watch, dance, and frolic as you become entwined in the history, the joy and the traditions of court and country dance.

* FAN FAVORITE – DeBracy Productions – Joust
Come witness the heart-pounding medieval live-action stunt show. DeBracy Productions combines trick riding, vaulting, chariot racing, death defying stunts, full contact jousting and a gladiator style spectacle. Experience a spectacle where the winner takes all, princess, kingdom, and treasure, but is it all worth it!?

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the 2019 Florida Renaissance Festival include Comcast, Warsteiner, Guinness, Pepsi-Cola and Funky Buddha Brewery.

“Christmas Eve,” written, directed and executive produced by C&I Studios’ CEO Joshua Otis Miller, is a thought-provoking story about the choices we make in life. The film follows Michael (Rafael Jordan), a man working hard to make ends meet in Brooklyn, New York, who makes an unexpected connection with a stranger, Evelyn (Elisabetta Fantone), on one wintry December night. The stranger offers Michael a respite from his grueling routine and a glimpse into shared humanity despite their differing social status.

“Christmas Eve” marks the second time that Miller has worked with actor Rafael Jordan; the first being on the well-received “Me, You & The Road.” This is also Miller’s second film to star Elisabetta Fantone, a Canadian actress, painter, model and author. The two collaborated on the short film, “The River Cabin.”

The film was produced by Amy Joy Miller and Aniela McGuinness with a score by Darren McFate. It was shot on location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, New York City and Brooklyn, New York. The film is rated “R” for strong language.

“South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall” Presents The Randy Brecker Quintet Friday, January 18 – 8:00 p.m.
Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker was born in Philadelphia to a musical family that included his late brother Michael, a remarkably influential tenor saxophone innovator. The brothers had created individually successful careers, but they shared a very special bond, often working together from 1975 on, as the Brecker Brothers Band, which garnered five GRAMMY Awards with their final two recordings.

Randy is a supremely gifted player who adds a solid dimension to every musical situation and configuration. He is most comfortable in his own band, a hard-swinging quintet with Randy’s wife, Ada Rovatti, sharing the frontline. The group’s repertoire gives more than a nod to the unforgettable Brecker Brothers.

Bailey Hall is on the Broward College A. Hugh Adams Central Campus
3501 SW Davie Rd. Davie, FL 33314. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.
