From the cultural melting pot of South Florida comes FUSIK: a funk band that embraces, explores and imparts multiple elements of music into their sound. Keyboard wizard Charles Gardner pushes out layer after layer of classic tones, from spiritual organ to fat disco synth as he and blues/rock guitarist & gritty soul singer Anton ‘Sanchez’ Rivera create melodies from every and any genre…latin soul, blues, jazz, rock..they play it all…add the stone cold pocket grooves laid down by drummer Daniel ‘Felix’ Garcia, the BIG boom of bassist Mack Henry Moore III and super conguero Danny ‘Quinto’ Naval, and you have the complete recipe for the body moving, ever groovin’ FUSIK sound.

HeartCamp begins with registration at 8:00 a.m. followed by 45-minute concurrent sessions with a lunch break. Tickets are $40 and include morning coffee plus a hot buffet lunch and other goodies offered by sponsors, plus 2 x 1 drinks at the after party. Registration is required.

After a highly successful and joyful first run in 2012, HeartCamp speakers and participants will gather at Hotel Urbano Brickell during American Heart Month. They’ll discuss the physical, emotional, spiritual and creative aspects of the heart, with a focus on relationships of all kinds — relationship to the heart, body, self, others and soul. Topics include heart health, nutrition, sex, romance, career, parenting and many more.

Speakers come from all walks of life — from individuals who have an inspiring story to share — to medical professionals who will address the intricacies of the organ that gives us life. Also on the roster are relationship coaches, neuroscientists, yoga teachers, literary authors, musicians and more.

HeartCamp is modeled after the technology-focused BarCamp, operating in different cities worldwide since 2005. As described in the Wiki, the ad-hoc style was born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Speakers present in an informal fashion, followed by a question-and-answer opportunity for the audience.

At HeartCamp, a closing open-mic session invites everyone to share. And in 2013, this will take place after participants learn about drumming and heartbeat.

This year’s event also features two moderated panels: one on heartbreak and the other on pregnancy. Two different workshops will focus on heart healthy breathing and meditation for releasing blocks to love. During the day, participants will also receive free mini-relationship coaching sessions from Heart’s Desire International.

A first of its kind in terms of topic, HeartCamp South Florida 2012 pioneered what could be many similar ‘camps’ around the world. Award-winning Miami-based writer and social media influencer Maria de los Angeles, the visionary behind HeartCamp, was inspired by local BarCamp events and her own troubles dealing with severe anxiety disorder to create this unique unconference.

“After my own experience, in what felt like a near-death moment after being injected twice in a an ambulance with adenosine — a chemical defibrillator — I swore that if I made it through those scary moments, I would give back in gratitude and build a new community,” she said. “I thought I’d bring people together who care about matters of the heart but don’t typically meet under the same roof — doctors, sex therapists, novelists, relationship coaches, healers, nutritionists, yoga teachers, storytellers and so on . No one speaker lords it over here. We’re all participants. The audience will be encouraged to share, especially at the closing plenary session.”

Under Maria’s direction, HeartCamp is a grassroots, no-profit effort and a labor of love rooted in community support. To date, 2013 sponsors include Ford, Life Extension, Florida Heart Research Institute, Latina Bloggers Connect, Hotel Urbano and over two dozen devoted service providers, media sponsors, in-kind donors, angel donors and volunteers.

MonteRosa “Vivo En Tu Amor” CD Release Party
MonteRosa Vivo En Tu Amor CD Release Party
MonteRosa returns with his third full length production titled “Vivo En Tu Amor”, a fully charged Pop/Rock gem in which all tracks were written and produced by MonteRosa himself.
Following his first two acclaimed and successful albums (Monte*Rosa & 12 Historias En 3 Tonos) which generated hits that topped radio and video charts, placement in multiple internationally transmitted television shows (“Spain…On The Road Again” and Telemundo Networks’ highly rated “La Reina Del Sur”) and independent award winning motion pictures (“Entre Nos”) “Vivo En Tu Amor” is chock full of songs that is destined to bring this Colombian born bilingual singer/songwriter a broader reach.
Vivo En Tu Amor brings the unique Pop/Alternative Rock sound mixed with Latin rhythms and powerful lyrics that symbolize MonteRosa. This production also includes three tracks in English (a not surprising follow-up since his debut album included a popular track in English) “Kitchen”, “Long Way Home” and “Hate Me”, each one a representation of the multi-genre appeal that MonteRosa brings no matter what language they are performed.
MonteRosa’s music is about people, his experiences, his feelings and most importantly what life is all about. Lyrics that inspire; make you reflect and think, accompanied by music that will make the hairs on your back stand and get your butt off the chair, that is MonteRosa and this is Vivo En Tu Amor.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.

Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.

“Funk cruises through the Caribbean picking up Afro sounds from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Reggae meets rock in a head-on collision. Jazz and electro hook up for a sidewalk makeout session. Hip-hop seems to hum from the very pavement, and R&B drifts in on the night wind. Suenalo reaches to far-flung corners and retrieves all these, takes them and mashing them together, marrying them—disparate players melded into a somehow harmonious blend. It defies logic that such diverse influences can find balance at the deft hands of one band. And yet they do.
It’s the result of a 10-year process of compromise and of growth between some of South Florida’s most talented musicians, who come together and share an ideal: that music should move their audience. Suenalo’s roster is stacked, with nine fulltime members boasting chops to rival anyone anywhere. Their lineup is a who’s who of brilliant musicians who have not only made their immovable imprint on Miami’s local music scene, but well beyond.”

PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in many other area venues. In this workshop we will journey deep into the hidden recesses of the inner mind. The inner mind, the unconscious and subconscious, consists of all memories and doorways to spiritual awareness: all the tools we need for accessing a greater sense of inner wisdom for self-healing. Through simply witnessing what the inner mind reveals, in this safe, nurturing environment, we can release blockages in our daily lives. We will have the opportunity to reprogram our brain with a greater sense of self-love, self-awareness and confidence in our own innate ability to create the lives we desire.

This workshop will consist of a brief asana practice created to open and calm the mind through releasing and aligning the physical and energetic bodies in order to access the subconscious and unconscious, a candle meditation to awaken the inner mind’s eye, followed by basic pranayama breathing exercises to calm the mind and body. Then, through a series of guided visualizations, accompanied by sound vibrations, created through live drumming and flutes, we will enter a deep state of relaxation where all memories are accessible. We will create the space to release blockages in our current life, receive tools for healing and personal growth, as well as opening the possibility to venture into deeper past life memories.

Regardless of where your journey takes you, you are guaranteed to leave this workshop deeply relaxed, more balanced and with a greater sense of awareness of the limitless powers of the inner self. Please bring a yoga mat, a blanket, a small towel and a writing implement and journal or notebook in order to record your experience in words and or images.

2013 Be A Voice Gala
February 16, 2013 | Mandarin Oriental, Miami

On February 16, Voices For Children Foundation will host its 2013 Be A Voice Gala, hosted by honorary Co-Chairs Brittany Lopez and Christian Slater. The event will feature a fabulous cocktail reception and silent auction beginning at 7 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing.

Each year the Be A Voice Gala welcomes 500 of Miami’s most influential and philanthropic community leaders who come together to support our efforts on behalf of Miami-Dade’s abused, abandoned and neglected children.

The evening will include exquisite food, beautiful décor and exciting entertainment as well as a testimonial demonstrating the importance and impact of Voices For Children Foundation and the Guardian ad Litem Program.

Voices For Children Foundation is a not for profit organization that raises funds to ensure that every abused, abandoned and neglected child in Miami-Dade County has a court appointed Guardian Ad Litem and that financial assistance and other resources are available for their accompanying health, educational, and social needs. Through our Children’s Needs program, direct financial assistance is available for immediate necessities for children in Foster Care such as food, clothing, and medical and/or psychological care. Voices For Children Foundation raises funds to support the state mandated Guardian ad Litem Program, bringing together individuals in the community to fill a gap left by budget cuts.

Havana Fusion Underground at PAX by Bob Quesada

The sound is flawless. The melody emanating from the twelve musicians known as: Charanga Tipica Tropical is as good as good will ever get. This is a cohesiveness which can only be achieved after nearly forty years of playing together. It is the fusion that we know as “salsa”, being played the way it was meant to be played; with violins, flute, piano, trombones, bass, and of course: percussion, plenty of percussion.

On the dance floor some of the best dancers anywhere are going all out. Now, this is not the watered down stuff that you see on some tv shows, nobody here is dancing for ratings, they are dancing for the sheer enjoyment of moving their bodies to the rhythm of the music, and the moves are simply amazing. The dance floor is big enough to accommodate pros and amateurs alike, everybody has a smile on their face.

“Havana Fusion Underground” is the brainchild of Rene Gueits, a salsa dancing master himself and owner of “Salsa Lovers”, Miami’s premier salsa dancing school (98,000 students so far…and counting). Gueits has brought together the band, cigar rollers, a dance art exhibit, a dance showcase by the salsa lovers student team and even a latin food truck to make this an unforgettable event in what could easily be described as the most eclectic place to party.

We are at the Performing Arts Exchange or “PAX”, a venue preferred by some of the best known international artists such as Ricardo Arjona, Chino y Nacho and Gaby Moreno just to name a few. There’s reason for these artists to want to perform here. Roxanne Scalia, one of the founders explains it this way: “PAX is about finding the authenticity in art…everything we book at PAX is very scrutinized…we are an independent performing arts center…we focus on latin and world music …we have over 740 yards of acoustic sound” she adds: “My whole intention of opening this place is I want every customer to walk out with something more… when you give good art, you walk out that much smarter”.

Considered Miami’s Oldest Bar, The Road has survived 10 decades of change: within it’s historic walls, and through the many adaptations of the neighborhood.  As Tobacco Road turns 100, it witnesses the biggest change yet; thousands of acres of open bulldozed land on 3 sides, and construction just beginning for what will be the towering Brikell CitiCenter, it’s anyone’s guess what lies in store for the Road and the neighborhood it’s called home for 100 years.  Tobacco Road has been many things; from a prohibition speakeasy hideout for Al Capone, a desolate working-man’s watering hole during the great depression, a stark salon with a country at War, threatened by many deadly hurricanes, ground-zero for race-riots, cocaine cowboys, and a big brother to the rise and fall and rise of South Beach — the Road has seen it all.  Through its time as a gambling den owned by the Chief of Police, a gay bar, strip joint and blues bar the two-story structure remains virtually unchanged since its inception in the early 1900s.

Tobacco Road turns 100 Years Old with a celebration slammed packed with top local and national artists, perfromances, muscians, festivals & BBQs — the Road Warriors will even show they can still compete with the kids at the upcoming Red Bull Flug Tag with a flying Birthday Cake lunged into Biscayne Bay on Novemebr 3rd in Bayfront Park.

Annual Beaux Arts Ball at Four Seasons 10/27/12

Annual Beaux Arts Ball
October 27, 2012; 7:30 p.m. until the Wizard of OZ has been revealed
Four Seasons Hotel Miami
1435 Brickell Avenue
Miami, FL 33131

Tickets: $250 per person; Call Tracy Lorenzo at 786-367-1870, or email beauxartsinfo@beauxartsmiami.org

Ball Chairs: Renee Castillo, Courtney Denaro, and Jessica Lopez

On Saturday, October 27th, Beaux Arts will host an adventure-filled Ball with scarecrows, tin men and lions in the search of brains, hearts and bravery leading them to the Emerald City; conveniently located at the Four Seasons Hotel on Brickell Avenue.

Beaux Arts’ “Emerald City” Ball celebrates 61 years of the organization and its support for the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum.

Master of Ceremony for The Land of Oz event will be Miami’s own Stephanie Sayfie-Aagaard, who is a dedicated philanthropist and has her own weekly social column, “Steph Sez,” in the Miami Herald.

The evening events will include a large silent auction, exciting raffle, sit-down dinner, dancing, and a costume and skit competition – all complemented by signature cocktails from Grey Goose. There will also be a dazzling Prize presented by Snow’s Jewelers.

New this year is the use of BidPal, a wireless bidding, donation, and payment tool that is the size and carries the look of an iPhone. With its touch screen, the Bidpal will enable Beaux Arts Ball guests to buy raffle tickets and stay on top of their bids, while socializing and sipping cocktails without having to remain in the auction area.

Another wonderful feature of BidPal is the ‘fund a need’ function.  This enables guests to donate money directly to Beaux Arts signature outreach programs, including HANDS ON – which introduces Miami-Dade Title 1 school students to the world of art and museums via field trips to the Lowe Art Museum – as well as the CHILDREN’S PAVILION PROGRAMS – which provide art classes and art camps throughout the year for children ages 5-12. The Bidpal will keep guests engaged in giving while having fun with their friends.

Ball sponsors for the event include Bunny Bastian, Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables and Mercedes of Cutler Bay, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Lowell Realty International, Ashley Brinson Cusack, Neiman Marcus, The Bermont Advisory Group, Boucher Brothers, Tuuci and many more.

Toscana Divino announces its inaugural Wine & Fashion Florence Week, an annual line up of dining, fashion and cultural experiences straight from Italy. At the peak of grape harvesting season in Chianti Rufina, Toscana Divino celebrates its wines, famous for being elegant, well balanced and full-bodied.

The tribute to Tuscany also shows off Italy’s latest and tastiest creations on the heels of fashion industry’s most famous week in Milan. The immersion experience features Executive Chef Julian Baker and Michelin Star Chef Marco Stabile L’accademia della Cucina Italiana menu designed exclusively for Toscana Divino’s Wine & Fashion Florence Week. Each day presents traditional, organic dishes and wine pairings from the region’s top labels.
Tuscany’s top sommeliers and winemakers will spend the week in Miami, sharing their passions for pairings. Every evening will kick off with the Italian-inspired “Aperitivo Italiano” social hour, offering complimentary bites and cocktails.

In a country that’s all about good taste and craftsmanship passed from generation to generation, Wine & Fashion Florence Week brings rich “Made in Italy” traditions to informal fashion shows, with Florentine designers stitching exotic bags on premise, along with master tailors from Scuola di Pelletteria di Firenze, Florence’s top innovative luxury leather producer.

Italy’s thriving artist community also comes to Miami. Maestro Alessandro Reggioli, famed for Contemporary Tuscan-inspired masterpieces, exhibits Tuesday and Thursday during Wine & Fashion Week, where he’ll create original pieces inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s themes, “The Flight” and “The Heart.”

“This is a new beginning of what is going to be a great Miami tradition,” says Tommaso Morelato, owner of Toscana Divino.

“Toscana Divino, a Beacon Council project, is a unique concept, comprised of the public and private sector of Tuscany and the region’s small and medium sized producers of the Fashion-Lifestyle industry," said Frank R. Nero, President & CEO of The Beacon Council. "The Beacon Council is delighted to see Toscana Divino’s efforts from its Miami-based location, the first of its kind from Tuscany, and its investment in our community.”

The Italian music scene is blowing up, rich with hip, vibrant sounds. Its regional music hubs spark everything from dubbed out reggae to high-energy rock, from electronic shimmer to jazz cool. HIT Week, now in its 6th year, is a great way to enjoy new Italian popular music. Visit HITWeek.it for details about the festival.

Maria Germinario, aka Mama Marjas, was born in 1986 and grew up in Apulia. Gifted with a vibrant voice and with a unique low timbre, she started singing when she was 6 years old together with her family orchestra (International Band). Mama Marjas is one of the most important and promising artists of the modern reggae Italian scene. She is very young and extremely talented , self-confident, rooted in reggae culture but, at the same time, versatile thanks to her solid musical culture.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Attendees, including South Florida’s top community leaders, will have the opportunity at the event to sponsor a child through donations. Once again, the gala emcee will be Lynn Martinez, anchor of WSVN’s Deco Drive.

Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a "choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and "Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

Free Beer Tasting 5 Belgians are People Too 9/10/12

Free Beer Tasting #5: Belgians are People Too
belgiumMonday Sept 10 – 6p-8p
Gordon Biersch – Brickell
1201 Brickell Ave
Miami, Florida 33131

It’s often confused me as to why people like taking shots at Belgians. So what if they have no real distinct language and borrow from the Dutch and French? Imagine borrowing something from the French –ha! So what if they didn’t win any gold medals at the Olympics? They did win a bronze in women’s judo and a bronze in laser class sailing. Yes we know that it’s easy to poke fun at Belgians. Heck, the two largest groups of people there are the Flemish and the Walloons. Yup, Flems and Loons.  They kind of do it to themselves.   But today I want to make a stand.  I want to scream “Belgians are people too!” as loud as I can on the keyboard.  Not that I’m actually going anywhere to yell this you understand. I want us to focus on the fact that the Flems and Loons have feelings and most importantly, they have redeeming qualities.  I don’t know any except for their prowess in brewing. (If anyone can chime in with some redeeming Belgian qualities please let me know.) Even though Belgium is considered a “low county” it is deep in our hearts with brewing.

Simply put Belgians make great beer. Not only that, but we Americans have borrowed greatly from many styles of Belgian brewing.  So let’s put aside that Belgium has no famous athletes or world leaders.  Forget that they don’t even have their own language.  It’s not important that people use Belgium and Holland interchangeably although they are two independent countries.  Belgians make a fine beer and for that alone they should be respected and counted as people too. So join me in celebrating Belgian rights and respect from here on out. Let’s raise our glasses and toast these fine Belgian beers. Cheers to you our Belgian brethren; the Flems and the Loons!

Join us in celebrating Belgian Respect day this Monday September 10 at Gordon Biersch in Brickell.  We’ll be sampling Belgian beer and Belgian style beer from 6p-8p. I’d like to say we’ll be sampling some Belgian culinary delicacies, but we haven’t found any.  See you Monday for “Belgians Are People Too.”

Hamilton de Holanda was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1976 and shortly thereafter his family moved to the capital, Brasilia.
I was five years old and my grandfather gave me my first mandolin.
My father was my first maestro. In 1982, Hamilton was six years old. He and his eleven-year-old brother, Fernando César, who played the seven-string guitar, formed the duo called Dois de Ouro.
Since there wasn’t a mandolin professor I had to take the violin course as it was the most “similar” instrument, or at least one with the same tuning.
Hamilton studied at the Brasilia School of Music from 1983 to 1992.
His education continued with a Diploma in Composition from the University of Brasilia, where he won the “Award for Best Work of Scientific Initiation in Music” – PIBIC – for his composition of a concert for mandolin and orchestra.
His composition “Destroçando a macaxeira” won second place and later entitled the first Dois de Ouro CD. Published in 1997, both the public and critics alike received this CD with great attention.
In October 1998, the Dois de Ouro duo published the album entitled “A nova cara do velho Choro” (The New Face of Old Choro). The daily Correio Braziliense elected it as the MPB disc of the year. And Dois de Ouro won the Prêmio Candango de Cultura award given by the Secretaria de Cultura do Distrito Federal (Secretary of Culture of the Federal District).
Also in Rio, in 1999, Hamilton joined guitarist Marco Pereira and Zélia Duncan on the Grandes Encontros project at the Leblon Theater and then with Marco Pereira and Dois de Ouro at the Clube do Choro in Brasilia with the “50 anos de Brasileirinho” concert.
They ranked third at the “1st MPB Visa Awards”. This result was considered unfair and was contested by the audience present at the Cultura Artística Theater in São Paulo.
In February 2000, he toured with Marco Pereira in the south of France.
He played as a soloist with the Cláudio Santoro National Theater Symphony Orchestra, the Brasilia Philharmonic Orchestra, the State of São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra and with the Brasilia School of Music Orchestra.
In 1999, 2000 and 2001, he taught bandolim (mandolin) at the Brasilia School of Music and the Raphael Rabello Brazilian School of Choro (Rabello was a great guitar player who died prematurely). This was the first school of this kind in Brazil and Hamilton went on to become its coordinator.
In September 2000, Dois de Ouro published its third album entitled simply “Dois de Ouro”. Next, in early 2001, came the album “Luz das Cordas” with guitar player Marco Pereira.
A “historic” concert was the 15th Edition of the Free Jazz Festival in Rio de Janeiro and then in São Paulo. He also performed at the Arts Alive International Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Paris Music Festival, the Vienna Jazz Festival and at the Brazilian Music Festival in Istanbul.
More recent group work has included the Brasília Brasil Trio, formed with guitarists Rogério Caetano and Daniel Santiago. The trio has already won the Rumos Musicais Itaú Cultural award for its original “sound.” It published a CD entitled “Abre Alas” in 2001 on the Caravelas label.
On December 4, 2001, he unanimously won the Icatu Hartford de Artes 2001 award for Best Instrumentalist in Brazil. This allowed him to live a year in Paris in the Cité Internationale des Arts.
In June 2002, he performed concerts in various Brazilian cities to present his first “solo” CD entitled “Hamilton de Holanda”, recorded on the Velas label. The album was dedicated to the four masters of the mandolin: Jacob, Luperce, Joel and Armandinho.
In July 2002, he was a guest at two important festivals in Corsica: Les Nuits de La guitare with Marco Pereira and the first ever International Mandolin Festival of Corsica, of which he is now the “Official Godfather.”
In September he played before an audience of 10,000 people at the São Luiz International Music Festival. He then went back to Paris, where he met resounding success at the La Cigalle Theater at a show of Márcio Faraco, a Brazilian with deep roots in France.
Shows then followed at the Paris Clube do Choro, the La Vieille Grille Theater and the Baiser Salé Jazz Club.
He was once again on tour in France, with his brother Fernando César on the seven-string guitar. He was called the “Prince de la mandoline” by the Parisian periodical Nova Magazine. He returned to France in 2003, this time with his Brasília Brasil group.
With Marco Pereira, he toured in Italy and Switzerland for the first time in November, with 12 concerts including these cities: Milan, Genoa, Verona, Siena and Bellinzona.
In April, he took off for a tour in the USA, playing at university campuses in Florida with Marco Pereira and in Los Angeles with the Brazilian Modern Choro Ensemble, receiving renewed acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Appleton Estate Bartender Challenge 2012

Last night I went to the Appleton Estate Bartender Challenge at The Blackbird Ordinary in Miami. Five bartenders had to create two drinks each and do so based on the inspiration of a particular song.

I’ve already written a detailed and more personal account of the evening on my blog, but I wanted to do a recap here to show you tons more pictures. Also, you know, because my bosses James and Annette were there and they are very demanding about my performance!

Local bartenders Cricket Nelson, Ben Clemons, Nick Nistico, Richie Petronzi and Rob Ferrara each created two unique cocktails featuring Appleton Reserve. The drinks were very complex and creative, and all of the competitors really went all out with their performances. My favorite drink on the night was Richie Petronzi’s Die Die My Darling, though I enjoyed all of them.

In the end, the judges voted to send Ben Clemons to New York for the US Finals, with that winner going to Jamaica for an international competition. I met a lot of fun people, stumbled into some old friends, and drank rum with Rum Royalty.

I hope you enjoy these photos. They are about 10% of the ones I took. The rest are blurry and/or terrible. If you are giving free photography classes, please contact  me!

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

WMC is a time of year when Miami gets to experience an influx of talent from the international dance community. Unfortunately, barring the occasional resident DJ set, it usually doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for the 305’s local heroes — until now. Carving a niche for themselves in this year’s festivities are three members of two-time Latin Grammy-nominated Locos por Juana, in their newest incarnation, Afro Kumbe.

The side project is an effort to delve into their Colombian roots, blending them with electronic sounds and making them more accessible. “We’ve been jamming with electronics for a long time, but the idea came from wanting to do a Locos DJ set,” says vocalist Itagui, who, along with LPJ bandmates Mark Kondrat and Javier “Lakambra” Delgado, makes up Afro Kumbe. “It’s something cool and different, and a chance for us to experiment with different instruments.”

The energetic singer claims his vocals will comprise primarily chants and tantra; meanwhile, he’s looking forward to playing instruments he doesn’t normally get to touch while fronting the band — such as the congas. “We want to revive those traditional Colombian sounds by giving them an electronic vibe,” he says. “L.A.’s got it with Palenke [Soultribe], and we want Miami to have that too. And this is an opportunity to share our music with people who prefer electro to live bands.”

With a solid foundation of organic songwriting, melodic vocals and good vibes, Elastic Bond delivers music even your mom would like. Led by singer Johnny Aguilo, Conjunto Progresso is considered one of the finest “keepers-of-the-flame” orchestras in the states. The conjunto sound, replete with tres finesse (Jose Elias), with powerful sones and deep-groove descarga jams, is alive and well. This is down-and-dirty stuff, close your eyes and you can almost smell the grit of a smoke-filled club reeking of rum and coke, and the sweat of people dancing, having a great time.

Every last Thursday, South Florida’s favorite Brazilian singer Rose Max and her amazing guitarist Ramatis Moraes fire up the dance floor at PAX with an authentic night of classic samba music inspired by the nightclubs of the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Accompanied by a pulsating band and an amazing percussion section, Rose and Ramatis will make you dance, sing and smile all night long.

Rose Max comes from a family of acclaimed musicians from Rio de Janeiro. Her great-grandfather was famed composer and conductor Cupertino de Menezes and her grandfather Manuel de Menezes played guitar with samba legend Noel Rosa. Along with her husband and guitar player Ramatis Moraes, Rose Max moved to Miami in 1993. Over the past 19 years she has earned several Miami New Times “Best of” awards as well as three Brazilian International Press Awards. Known for their exquisite renditions of Bossa Nova classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim, this event at PAX features only samba – the other, more energetic, have to dance genre of Brazilian music. This is the only authentic, monthly samba party in Miami where you will hear the popular hits from the Rio de Janeiro samba schools.

¡Suénalo! (sweh-nah-low) verb
1. To sound, slap, or play upon a musical instrument, object, or person.

Latin funk. Fusion. Jam band. Multicultural cocktail. Afro-Latin-Baby-Makin’-Descarga-Funk. Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.
