Sesame Street veteran Noel MacNeal and award-winning composer Jim Camacho, return with Mouse King, a family-friendly South Florida holiday tradition written by MacNeal and Camacho.

Española Way is reviving up for its monthly event, Noche de Coche (Night of Cars). In Spanish, “coche” translates to cars, but it also means stroller. For Española Way’s Noche de Coche, this pedestrian-only street is inviting families to visit with their children and for one night each month parade down the street with wagons, tricycles, scooters and strollers. Restaurants lining the street will be offering specials, there will be balloon artists, lawn games, astronaut ice cream, bitbits chocolate, activities and prizes! This month, Santa Claus will also be making a guest appearance – he will be available for photos throughout the night.
Española Way is a historic street between 14th and 16th street on Miami Beach, stretching from Washington Avenue to the western corners of Drexel Avenue. Miami Book Fair kicks off this year on Sunday, November 12th, with a photo exhibition for HURRICANE, a new book by Miami photographer, Barry Fellman, with spectacular photos that transform devastation into art. The book includes essays by hurricane hero Bryan Norcross, and Vicki Goldberg, art critic of the NY Times.

HURRICANE will be featured when MDC president Eduardo Padrón opens the Miami Book Fair November 12, and is the only book with an exhibition at the Fair. Large scale photos will displayed at the main event venue The Porch throughout the week, and there will be a conversation with author and Bryan Norcross on October 18 at 10:30 am.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering its monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

For November, the theme is Twirling Creations inspired by Alexander Calder. The activity for the children is mixed media mobiles. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay and create with their children.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering its monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

Saturday, September 23rd join Kim Cameron and her puppet friend Emma at Books and Books for a reading from her ocean themed children’s book series Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure! Appropriate for ages 5-9, the Seaper Powers series communicates positive messages about self-confidence, friendship, and the environment. The children will journey with Kim and Emma through the ocean, tumbling across waves to discover treasure with the help of new sea critter friends made along the way. Guests will enjoy a puppet reading, short movie based on the book, and a meet and greet with Q&A afterwards.

In search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure: A magical tale about a little girl (Emma) who discovers special seagrass off the island of St. Thomas. It transforms her body so that she can talk to fish! Not only does she make new friends, she sets off on a new adventure to find buried treasure!

Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns, performing with puppets. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim recently signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the impetus. They called the book Seaper Powers, in Search for Bleu Jay’s Treasure.

Journey to the Mediterranean at the final First Fridays beach picnic of the season. Luckily, locals only have to drive a short distance to the beautiful Town of Surfside in order to experience live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, interactive drum circle, Dead Sea exfoliating mud scrubs and Mediterranean bites. True to Mediterranean cultures, this event is a family-affair where guests are encouraged to bring their children and enjoy Surfside’s pristine beach, in addition to loads of kid-friendly activities. At First Fridays, art aficionados also can get their dose of culture by participating in a walking tour of the InsideOut pop-up art exhibit presented by Perez Art Museum and stroll along Surfside’s beach to discover reproductions of masterpieces from PAMM’s permanent art collection by 15 renowned artists. Fans of all ages will enjoy witnessing each competitor drive three customized high-powered vehicles: Monster Jam Speedsters, Monster Jam ATVs and the famous Monster Jam trucks to face off in battles of strength, ability and perseverance for the ultimate championship and a highly coveted bid at Monster Jam World Finals.

These premier athletes vying to be the Miami champion are: Grave Digger driven by Tyler Menninga, Max-D driven by Colton Eichelberger, Zombie driven by Bari Musawwir, Scooby-Doo driven by Myranda Cozad, El Toro Loco driven by Kayla Blood, EarthShaker driven by Tristan England, Blue Thunder driven by Matt Cody, and Monster Mutt Rottweiler driven by JR Seasock.

Monster Jam competitors are trained at Monster Jam University in mastering the skills needed to compete in the series. Approximately 12 feet high and about 12 feet wide, Monster Jam trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster Jam trucks can fly up to 125 to 130 feet in distance and up to 35 feet in the air.

The Pit Party on August 5 and 6 from 10:30 a.m. to noon gives fans the opportunity to meet the Monster Jam athletes and get up close to the Monster Jam trucks. Pit Passes can be purchased for $10 at the box office or online at Ticketmaster.

Be part of the Festive Fridays’ experience!

“Festive Fridays” lineup of entertainers for the month of May at Southland Mall is full of exciting performances that will inspire, motivate and entertain families and their little ones in the areas of the arts, dance and martial arts.

Just like every Friday, families are invited to experience a memorable time at the mall’s Center Court from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. where performers and artists come together on a weekly basis to offer exciting and engaging performances. From adults to children, everyone will enjoy “Festive Fridays”. Start off your weekend with a little culture!

Below is a list of the events for the month:

• May 12th – Kick off the first Festive Friday of the month with the Miami Arts Charter School. Students will showcase their different talents as they delight audiences through drama, dance, chorus, visual arts and orchestra performances, which mall-goers of all ages are sure to enjoy.

• May 19th – Join the students from Hipnotic Dance Studio for another fun and exciting dance performance that will entertain all who attend. It will make you want to boogie and groove to the music and their moves.

• May 26th – Make sure to bring the little ones because The National Karate Academy’s Little Dragons Team will show off their martial art skills. Performing amazing skills, it’s an event for the entire family that you don’t want to miss.

“Festive Fridays” is a free event series open to the public. Southland Mall is conveniently located on U.S. 1 and SW 205thStreet, off the Florida Turnpike, Exits 11 or 12. Thrive Arts+Tech Summer Camps for Grades 4-12. Enrollment Deadline May 15, 2017

The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation introduces the Thrive Innovation District with a vision that focuses on opportunities for community growth manifested through the arts + tech + health and wellness + innovation + creativity in downtown Opa-locka.

The first initiative of the Thrive Innovation District is the Arts+Tech Summer Camps 2017 funded by The Children’s Trust. The camps are Free and will offer students in Grades 4-12 an opportunity to explore interests and talents in the areas of Creative Writing, Music and Dance, Gaming, Web Design, Mobile Apps and 3-D Printing. These 6-week camps will take place from June 19, 2017 to July 28, 2017 at the Thrive Innovation District in Opa-locka. All programs are free, offer free breakfast and lunch to participants, and will run between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (exact times vary per camp).

The Town of Surfside invites Miamians to pack their picnic baskets for a family-friendly Moroccan Beach Picnic to kick-off the town’s much-anticipated monthly First Fridays event on Friday, May 5. Unlike any other community event, this casual soiree takes place on Surfside’s pristine beach and is a great way to experience the ever-evolving area like a local. Enjoy live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, drum circle and tipi village for kids, cold-pressed juices, coconut water courtesy of Harmless Harvest, and healthy snacks. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor (1948-2015) developed Synergism as a new art method through a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.

Artist-led hands on workshop. Participants should bring two to three everyday objects (wood, leather, rubber, ceramics, metal, no fabrics) with a personal connection to their lives and hometown. Objects will be combined to create a community collage/art piece reflective of Ekaterina and Victor Khromin’s aesthetics. Participants will share personal histories and discuss contemporary art aesthetics.

The Spot Barbershop will have a pop up for the men, and stylists will showcase multiple fashion shows by local boutiques, fashion bloggers including iShine365, Dyme Lyfe, graciouslylovedllc, Koko and Palenki, to name a few.

The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The Bitter Truth will have a pop up where they’ll carve the ice for each cocktail with a chainsaw, and they will also compete against Employees Only to come up with the “Best Cocktail” at Wynwood Life.

Registration is now taking place for the 2017 Summer Program at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, which will be held at four different locations: the Hank Kline Club, Northwest Club, South Beach Club and Kendall Club Monday through Friday. The Summer Program allows children to learn values such as friendship, honesty and teamwork by providing a safe and secure environment in which they can express and develop such relationships.

To register, parents must come in person to the specific Club where their child(ren) will be attending the Summer Program. Mailed or faxed registration cards will not be accepted. Children will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is filled. Downtown Dadeland, an urban culinary and lifestyle center, will be hosting its Winter Block Party on Feb. 4 from 5-10 p.m. to celebrate the recent unveiling of ‘Spectrum,’ an iconic 29-foot sculpture designed by award-winning sculpture artist Gordon Huether. Attendees will enjoy live music by the Miller Road Band and DJ Volkmusik, along with food and beverages from Downtown Dadeland’s culinary masters, including: Barley an American Brasserie, The Brick American Kitchen and Bar, Ghee Indian Kitchen, Harry’s Pizzeria, Pasion del Cielo coffee, Lime Fresh Mexican Grill and World of Beer. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) historic Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, continues its bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias, with a grand holiday celebration, Fiesta Navideña! (Christmas Celebration) on Saturday, Dec. 17, noon – 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Fiesta Navideña features Latin Grammy-nominated Cuban producer, teacher, and voice coach Rita Rosa–renowned for her bilingual music programs–leading a sing-along called “Villancicos y Chocolate.” Other activities will include storytime with Teatro Prometeo; ornament craft-making; an elf-led Santa letter writing station; and a toy drive benefitting the local charity Amigos for Kids. Food (tamales, churros con chocolate) and drinks will be available for purchase, as will valet parking.

Playtime provides parents an engaging way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlights the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children are invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. The series launched with a festive bang–a Dia de los Muertos celebration, and continued with Las Aventuras del Don Quixote, presenting a children’s version of the book as well as related games and imaginative activities.

Aggressive dogs are not permitted in the garden. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden reserves the right to refuse entry to, or remove, any dog thought to be dangerous to visitors or other dogs.
Dogs in heat are prohibited from entering the garden.
