As gallerists, artists, curators and collectors descend on Miami Art Week to experience the latest in the world of art and luxury, Bon Appétit Magazine, in conjunction with Volvo, bring Miami the first-ever “Taste What’s Next.”

Michelin-starred Chef Fredrik Berselius and multimedia artist Chris Doyle will come together, at the center of where art, food and technology blend, to celebrate Volvo’s Scandinavian luxury, functionality and design, while showcasing their own never-before-experienced work.

A fun late afternoon will transition into a high-energy night as hundreds of Miami’s art lovers and socialites enjoy cocktails, and bites prepared by Chef Fredrik, in his first-ever Miami Art Week appearance, and become some of the first to experience a preview of the Scandinavian-inspired menu for his much-anticipated new restaurant, set to open in Brooklyn in the first half of next year.

Simultaneously, artist Chris Doyle will reveal a new projection-driven masterpiece rooted in connecting the natural world with the growing digital culture. Guests will also have an opportunity to interact with Volvo’s new XC90 model through special demonstrations, as well as enjoy sounds by South Beach-based DJ talent Danny Stern.

Massive Urban Art Block Party To Debut In Wynwood. Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood has become synonymous with graffiti, urban art, murals and street art, and it offers a unique way for the public to experience this art form. This year, Mana Wynwood, Mana Contemporary and the Bushwick Collective have teamed up to launch the Mana Urban Arts Project at the iconic RC Cola Plant in Miami. To celebrate this historic occasion, they joined forces with Basel House to host a free, four-day block party during Art Basel Week. The Basel House & Bushwick Collective Block Party will be the epicenter of the graffiti world this December. RSVP for the Launch Party to get a Free Drink.

The Block Party will showcase some of the world’s top street artists including Ghost (NY), GIZ (NY), Case Maclaim (Germany), Shok1 (England), Atomik (Florida), Lola Blu (Florida), Crash One TATS CRU (NY), Don Rimx (Florida), Sipros (Brazil), James Cochran (Australia), Aiko (US/Japan), SPOK (Spain), Hoxxoh (Florida) and Trek6 (Florida), to name a few. These artists will transform the RC Cola Plant with an entire body of new murals and paintings. Artists will be painting live throughout the four-day event. In addition, The Heineken® Mobile Art Experience will make a stop with their branded truck, which will feature a rotating canvas on the outside and a fully stocked art store and gallery on the inside. In addition, a free concert series featuring Fat Joe and other hip hop legends will add to the colorful backdrop. DJ’s, arts & craft vendors will also be present. It wouldn’t be Wynwood without the Food Trucks, so Basel House has secured a swarm of South Florida favorites; from lobster to hot dogs, you name it, they’ll be serving it up!

Curating the collaboration is Joe Ficalora of the Bushwick Collective from Brooklyn. The Bushwick Collective was born on the streets of Brooklyn as a way for Joe to cope with personal tragedy. The Collective transformed a large section of the Bushwick neighborhood into a colorful and vibrant work of urban art. Many of those artists will be making the trip to Miami to help launch the Wynwood location of the Mana Urban Arts Project. “We are proud to showcase some of the best artists from around the world, and we hope to inspire the masses,” explains Joe.

The team at SWARM is known for hosting incredible events throughout South Florida, and Basel House will be no different. “We are honored to be working with the Bushwick Collective and Mana,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO and Basel House Director. “The only way to launch this unique project is with a complete and utter blowout, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

From painting to poetry, KIND Snacks (KIND) invites South Florida to join them in recognizing our community’s most talented young artists. Building upon the success of last year’s landmark campaign, KIND will again shine a light on the importance of youth arts education during Art Basel – this time in the form of a pop-up called The KIND Café: an #ichooseart experience.

Featuring a gallery of student artwork, live musical and spoken word performances by youth artists, and a hands-on community mural, The KIND Café will be an oasis for those who love and appreciate all things creative. Welcoming impromptu performances with an open mic, KIND invites any young artist to freely express themselves before a supportive audience.

The pop-up will also offer a complimentary “Bar Bar” where guests can pair their favorite KIND snack with craft beer, cheese and other selections, as well as the opportunity to take home exclusive art pieces featuring the work of local young artists.

With this event, KIND asks attendees to support the idea of art being accessible to all, something that can be a source of guidance and inspiration… all starting with the powerful choice to live a kinder, healthier, more positive life.

Curated by Tumelo Mosaka, “Through the Eyes of Others” aims to provide a critical platform for re-imaging the past, present and future possibilities of blackness as something more complex than race. What words, actions and images can interrogate the culture of violence, distrust and hatred applied to black people? While stereotypical images of black people continue to reinforce negative attitudes, work in the exhibit resists and defies easy consumption of these subjects. Participating artists include Ebony G. Patterson, Dread Scott, Hank Willis Thomas, and Bernard Williams.

As Miami grows into a major global city and establishes its cultural identity, Young Artists Initiative (YAI), an avant-garde collective of young artists has made it their mission to contribute a unique substance to the landscape of culture and art.

Just like the Impressionists challenged the Académie des Beaux-Arts with their independent exhibitions in 19th Century Paris, or street artists such as Banksy stirred emotion in the streets of London in the 90s, YAI brings together young, forward-thinking artists to shape the face of their growing world-class city.

Calling the burgeoning artistic hubs of Miami their home, their vision is of a Miami recognized for class and connoisseurship in modern art forms, including all various genres that inhabit Miami’s underground, waiting to burst to the surface. Welcome to their vision.

You are cordially invited to the Young Artist Initiative’s first showcase at Cafeina Wynwood on Friday, October 23rd. Event starts at 7:00PM with no cover at the door.

You will witness numerous art installations, live painting performances, a fashion show curated by the creators of the Miami-based blog, Iron N Salt and live music and much more. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to become an active member of the Miami art life!

The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) is proud to announce LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING, a collaborative project between MCAD and EXILE Books, a Miami-based, pop-up artist’s book store. LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING is a groundbreaking program that seeks to bridge the understanding between downtown Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, specifically addressing visual impairments. Opening September 3, 2015, the exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.

LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING will transform ten Downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau via four main components:

The MCAD gallery will feature tactile relief works of selected downtown buildings with accompanying wall texts provided in braille.

The public, front steps of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) will house the project’s central component: an outdoor audio piece that will share engaging stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD’s home) as well as surrounding downtown buildings. The audio installation will be accompanied by a large, vinyl, floor applique inviting passersby to “LISTEN” to the building.

To further enhance the exhibit, students from FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Miami Beach Urban Studios will create models of selected downtown buildings using a 3-D printing process. These renderings will be displayed in covered boxes obscuring their visual properties so that audiences must feel the building to experience the architecture.

To commemorate the exhibition, EXILE Books will also produce an artist’s book in which the architectural narratives from the outdoor audio piece will be transcribed in braille. There will be no photographs or printed text in the publication, only tactile reliefs of each building, effectively compelling the viewer to experience Miami through new and distinct paradigms.

The exhibition is believed to be the first architectural exhibit designed to address accessibility for persons with visual impairments. MCAD and EXILE Books will co-host a slate of weekly events during the six-week exhibition to engage the public on issues of art, architecture, and accessibility. The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2015 to October 17, 2015.

The exhibition, mobility tours, and braille artist book are made possible with the support of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Support for EXILE Books is made possible through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Printing and consulting for the project generously provided by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Tactile illustrations offered by John De Salvo and Judith McBrien as featured in the Norton’s Pocket Guide to Miami Architecture. Programming partners include Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ability Explosion, Florida International University’s College for Architecture + the Arts, and IlluminArts. Additional sponsorship provided by Thomas Printworks and SFCA isaw + Subtropics.

PARTNER INFORMATION

Life Is Art
Life Is Art is presenting a number of excellent local artists showcasing a wide variety of visual art styles.

Yo Miami & Kondoit
A hub for local artists, Yo Miami has grown since 2011 into an ecosystem where creatives can get access to resources & contacts to help them reach the next level of success in their careers. By working with businesses, nonprofi t & community organizations we are able to foster a network which enables us to create opportunities throughout the year for artists to demonstrate their talents in ways that add value to our neighborhoods. With several monthly events at various venues around Wynwood, we continually o ffer a platform where emerging artists can reach a wider audience. At the same time, we show business owners the benefits associated with incorporating arts programming into their operations, & help foster the growth of our local communities through this synergy. For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Buskerfest
We strive for a connected, thriving urban core where the streets of Miami are active and enlivened with local performers, enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life. We envision a joyous place that is reflective of the tropical urban landscape and attractive to locals and visitors alike.

Celebrate Diversity Miami
Celebrate Diversity Miami’s 2015 Photo‐voice Exhibit focuses on celebrating the diversity of our greater Miami community with a unique array of large-scale photographs. It features 60 beautiful, vibrant images submitted by residents, schools, and organizations from across Miami-Dade County. Join us in celebrating our incredible culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Give a #DiversityMiami shout-out with a picture or postcard, and share what makes the place you call home awesome!

FoodSpark
By way of delicious food and great conversation, FoodSpark Miami will provide a fun, interactive gathering space for diverse groups of greater Miami residents to connect with one another, discuss key social issues with fellow citizens, and figure out how we can collaborate to improve the quality of life in our local neighborhoods. FoodSpark Miami is made possible in part by the 8-80 Cities Emerging City Champions 2015 Fellowship, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

Chalk-tacular: 3-Acre Art Project to Reclaim Dan Paul Park 8/8/15

Chalk-tacular: 3-Acre Art Project to Reclaim Dan Paul Park
August 8, 1-4PM
Parcel B (the waterfront property due east of AA Arena)
Downtown Miami, FL
Facebook

If you draw it, it will come. On August 8th, hundreds of students, families and local artists are teaming up with Engage Miami and a growing coalition of Miami-based community groups to send a very big message to Miami Dade County commissioners and the Heat. This coalition of community groups, students, and artists will work together to create a massive 3-acre chalk drawing that will cover the entire sheet of asphalt currently sitting on top of the infamous Parcel B site (the waterfront property due east of the American Airlines Arena). They want the County and the Heat to deliver the “world-class waterfront park” that was a centerpiece of the advertising campaign the Heat used to persuade Miami-Dade county voters to pass the referendum in favor of building the AA Arena back in 1996.

Co-hosts for this event include Engage Miami and Chalk Project, Catalyst Miami, Center for Social Change, Celebrate Diversity Miami, Colony1, Dark Matter Collective, Dream Defenders, Emerge Miami, Guitars Over Guns, Guns Down Bikes Up, Instagramers Miami, Miami City Chess Club, Miami Parks Foundation, New Leaders Council Miami, The New Florida Majority, The New Tropic, Roots Collective, SMIA Group / Sustainable Miami, Urban Environment League, Urban Paradise Guild UPG and the list is growing.

“We hope this day of fun-filled community engagement will send a strong message to Miami-Dade County commissioners and to the Heat that Miami residents won’t back down until we get what we’ve been promised,”says Maydee Martinez (19), an Engage Miami board member and current MDC student.
Miami residents’ promised park (including a mini-soccer field) remains just that, a promise. Residents have been waiting 20 years.

“When you don’t get what you want, you gotta do it yourself. And when you do it yourself you might as well go big– real big,” says Nando Jaramillo of Colony 1 urban farm in Wynwood.
To drive their message home: They’re striving to win a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of independent chalk drawings done in a single setting. The current record is 308 drawings is held by a group in Toyama, Japan.

In addition to reaching out to other community groups, coalition members will send invitations to all county and city commissioners. But, Justin Wales, an event organizer and leader of Engage Miami, says that just showing up is not enough:
“Let’s be clear. Residents, especially young people, are tired of waiting for our elected officials to act. We are claiming this park for the public, as it was promised to us, and we ask that young people across Miami join us.”

Art + Performance + Outreach

JULY 18, 2015 | 7-11pm

The organizers, Niki Lopez and Alana DaCosta, of The Elephant Exhibition invites you attend the opening reception at 1310 Gallery which is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.), Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 on July 18, 2013.

The Elephant Exhibition is a group arts exhibition featuring work that challenges both artist and viewer to consider their choices about what in our lives, should be revealed and what should be hidden. We want the elephant out in the open so we can find release…

“The Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss, It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

Visual Artists include: Niki Lopez; Alana DaCosta; Allison Kotzig; Rolando Chang Barrero, Judy Leeson Polstra, Sonia Baez-Hernandez, Dianne Rosenberg; Ian Barnes, Susan Buzzi, Rene Gordon and others come together in a visual dialogue to revel their The Elephant.

Opening night will be hosted by Spoken word artist Chunky with performances by Chaos Theory, Dawn Robinson , 2015 Dada National Slam Team, Tico Armand, Yoli Mayor & others.

Photographs of Perez Art Museum Miami Poplife Social June Event by Mr Q 305

This past Thursday, the Pérez Art Museum (PAMM) Poplife Social featured John Hancock III whose sounds ranged from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso.

The third Thursdays Poplife Social have received a very positive response from the community and to meet the growing demand for the series, they have added pre-ticketing and more food and bar stations.

The menu items included Miso Glazed Chicken Skewers, Pork Belly Bao Buns, Grilled Mushroom Bao Buns, Shrimp Chips and Kimchee pickles.

This was the perfect way to enjoy a Thursday evening: Art galleries, live music and great food!

About John Hancock III
John Hancock III makes tropical pop music for every season, ranging from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso. Best known as the lead singer of Miami bedroom pop pioneers ANR (Awesome New Republic), Hancock, or ‘MJ’ as he’s called by most, has produced music with multi-media artist Jillian Mayer, as well as scoring many wild works of the Borscht Film Festival. This year promises several new releases full of saccharine 60’s pop fed through an old computer, via the 10K Islands music collective.

About Pérez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) promotes artistic expression and the exchange of ideas, advancing public knowledge and appreciation of art, architecture and design, and reflecting the diverse community of its pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas. A 29-year-old South Florida institution formerly known as Miami Art Museum (MAM), Pérez Art Museum Miami opened a new building, designed by world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park on December 4, 2013. Astolfo Funes’s theme is “women,” but in reality, the “feminine” as an expression of a universe that belongs to humans, which he loves. Funes’ Women are concept and form, are underground issues that arise in extraordinary colors, glow encased in large black lines. The face in the foreground of one of his current series, accuses changes since the beginning of the first decade. Face emerges from the back of the fabric to penetrate the viewer’s personal life, saying you are like me, while the individualist sentiment appears exaggerated in his own connections to feelings and emotions.

Join us for his exhibition in the Artisan Lounge in Gallery 1 and 3. Free admission.

We’re celebrating 4 years of being active in the Miami arts and culture scene with an event that brings together all the elements we love in our city: Art, Music, Beer and Food.

While there are many private collections focusing on Latin American, Caribbean, and other cultural art movements in the region, none specifically focus on artists who have made Miami their home. As Yo Miami’s four year anniversary approaches, it will unveil its biggest project to date: the Yo Miami Permanent Collection, aimed at rectifying this lapse.

“What Remains” the first exhibition for the collection is indicative of its mission to document the evolution of the Miami art scene in an effort to expose the immense talent that has grown out of South Florida. The exhibition will be the first of many initiatives focused on preserving our city’s artistic legacy and sharing it with residents and visitors alike.

-“What Remains” exhibition artists: Trek 6, Ruben Ubiera, Jay Bellicchi (Remote), Claudio Picasso (CP1), Yuhmi Collective, Douglas Hoekzema, Lorie Ofir, Rei Ramirez, Nicole Salgar, Luis Berros, Nate Dee, Delvs, Ivan Roque, Raul Santos (OEMS), WHUT

About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned. Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores. These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists.

The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community. Follow @leahartsdistrict on Instagram for updates.

The Beauty and The Streets pop-up exhibit at the Shelborne Wyndham Grand Hotel (1801 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL) will showcase a rare and interactive view of NY Street Artist Nobody’s conversation about female sensuality, sexuality and beauty in the streets seen through the eyes of Nobody. The exclusive cocktail reception will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Signature drinks will be served by Toast Vodka. Street art has become a global culture and street artist Nobody continues to create poignant socio-political observations and commentaries on the people and events of contemporary society. Each of his creations is a spontaneous, yet cerebral mix of symbols, words, and figures used as devices to leave subtle clues for the viewer to interpret or reinterpret.

“I am the defiant thread in this great tapestry of life, who has decided to weave instead of being woven, and boldly proclaim myself an artist. My rebellious markers and aerosol cans do not need, nor seek your permission as I converse with generations yet unborn,” says Nobody. “To you I may be a nobody. Then undeterred and unaffected I say to you, ‘Nobody did it!’ as I leave my mark on the world.”

The artist also has a great love for children, and uses not only his art but also his heart, volunteering his time to Miami non-profits in hopes that children will see the beauty within themselves. On any given day, you will see him whizzing down the streets on his skateboard, on his way to conduct an art workshop for a community youth program.

TMNK says there is beauty in the streets, and he’s on a mission to make sure everyone sees and values this obscure beauty.

Life Is Art presents Art ArtWork Connections Seminar #26 Social Media Analytics at Kroma on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month was Social Media Analytics for Artists & Creatives by Adriana Oliva, Social Media & Communications Strategist, theAOinsight.

Many artists spend a lot of time on social media posting their work. But, do they know whether it is really working? There are tools, many of them free or low cost, that help a user understand the impact of their social media promotion. Come and learn how to identify your best channels and what sort of posts create the most impact.

How do you know if the platforms you use are where your potential new buyers are? How do you know if the kind of posts you make are appealing to potentially new buyers and fans? This seminar will help you save time and sell more art. As you focus your social media promotional efforts to those that really bring in new buyers and fans, you will see a greater return on your investment. Yes, we will be talking real numbers, how you can find those numbers, and how to understand them.

The project, Site/Cite, is the first phase of Hood’s vision for Opa-locka, and is a major part of the dramatic changes in one of Miami’s most iconic and storied neighborhoods.
Art enthusiasts, volunteers, and those with an interest in sustainable development are invited to participate in the reimagining of Ali Baba Avenue during the Community Paint Day. Materials including paint, brushes, a T-shirt and meals will be provided to hundreds of people participating in painting the avenue, surrounding sidewalks and street furniture, during one of the largest and most iconic participatory public art displays in South Florida.

Pinecrest Gardens is the home of a wonderful display of flowers, trees, rock formations and gardens.  In the Garden, there is a large Banyan Tree that is the heart of the Park.  Having grown up in South Miami, Parrot Jungle was one of my favorite parks and remember being able to play among the roots of then a young Banyan.  It is an honor to be able to reflect the beauty of this park through my paintings.

Banyans are considered sacred and it is amazing how these ancient trees are figured so prominently in many cultures. They have used these massive trees as homes and small communities. Even the leaves are considered the resting place of Krishna.

Banyans have a wonderful way of catching the light and there is so much movement of the roots.  They are all so connected it is reminiscent the way life is so connected and intertwined.

All the paintings in this exhibit are specific to Pinecrest Gardens highlighting the Banyan Tree.  Also included are some solution holes, (one 30,000 years old) exotic and tropical plants, flowers and some animals.

Please come to see the park through my eyes in these paintings.

With a magnificent and colorful spectacle the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida closes its seventeenth season. Its traditional Spring Gala will include the return of Vladimir Issaev’s exciting neo-classical ballet Shostakovich Suites and Vicente Nebrada’s sensous work, Pentimento. The Spring Gala is part of the Broward County Centennial Celebration.

Shostakovich Suites is an exhilarating choreographic piece by Vladimir Issaev, inspired by the music of this Russian composer who was a revolutionary in contemporary composition while suffering the brutal despotism toward talented artists during Stalin’s era. The piece brings all the excitement of the neo-classical dance combined with the extraordinary skills of the Issaev’s dancers at Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Pentimento, created by renowned choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. Pentimento, a pivotal piece of his repertoire, is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting of the same name. The artist changes his mind about the composition of his painting during the process, and then changes it. This approach is also applied to ballet: the dance and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, floating fabrics and dense lighting, the piece is developed with the presentation of different characters who dance and show the genius of Nebrada. Adding to mystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni.

These pieces will be performed by the professional dancers of the company where principals Hirofumi Ikeuchi, Lillian Hill, Ramil Bagmanov, Takayuki Asai and Aya Baba have the responsibilities of the main roles. The program showcases the extraordinary skills of Vladimir Issaev’s dancers.

Visitors will have the opportunity to have an intimate look inside the artist’s studio and learn more about her new works.

In her studio, Fache will have some of her recent works in exhibition. Among them, “Untitled” an acrylic big scale painting and a new installation.

Carla Fache is a chilean born Miami-based visual artist who explores the frontiers of color, space, balance and matter, through her paintings and installations.

Her work unfolds the juncture of parallel scenarios that occur simultaneously to quotidian realities, providing dimensions of escape against the society status quo, leverage a reconnection through her canvas portals.

Color is essential in Fache’s work; she explores its infinite combinations, re- contextualizing the concept of coexistence, color, time and universality; a return to the essential.

Her work employs a variety of materials including traditional canvas, but also introducing unusual artifacts, expanding outside of the two-dimensional plane of the canvas and into the surrounding environment.

“Opening the doors of my studio is like opening the door of color to my canvas’s mental space”, explains Fache.

This is a unique opportunity to see inside the studios of some of Miami’s most talented artists. Nearly 40 artists will have their studios open. You can meet with the artists and talk about their work or simply browse through the studios. Please feel free to invite friends. With artists working in every medium, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Blueshift Wynwood is pleased to announce Andrew Levitas: Metalwork Playground, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Levitas, known for his meticulously handcrafted photo-sculptures developed through his patented/trademarked process Metalwork Photography®, has produced a new body of work consisting of recreational playground equipment.
Driven by the desire to express his inner vision in a highly personalized medium, Levitas encourages dialogue on the most pressing concerns of our times: dramatic shifts in America’s political and economic strength, technology and our quest for simplicity, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. Levitas creates an inviting experience through the lens of easily recognized forms (seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds) and the most cherished and happiest of experiences – childhood playtime that can also translate to adult environments. To further complicate this discussion, the sculptures are crafted following the strictest of design principles in gleaming polished chrome. Their sleekness hints at our need for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions.
Levitas, who is also a filmmaker and writer, began his fine art practice as a painter and photographer. Finding the medium of photography personally limiting, he developed Metalwork Photography®, a process involving the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are in turn melted onto hand etched metal sheets creating a highly reflective surface. Levitas’s installations take this technique one-step further and are comprised of multi- paneled interlocking metal sheets. Built to scale, the playground equipment sculptures, just like his photographs, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and are completely functional art objects.
Born in New York City, Levitas received his BA from NYU where he currently teaches courses on the creative process. In 2008, the artist was accepted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which concluded with an exhibition at the Louvre. In addition to a growing list of American and international exhibitions, his work has garnered attention through top auction houses, museums, and art fairs. Recent highlights include the first ever solo exhibition at Phillips Berkeley Square, London. Levitas also recently wrote and directed the feature film Lullaby staring Garrett Hedlund, Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Anne Archer, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Levitas maintains studios in London, New York and Los Angeles and continues to expand on ideas of engagement and creative expression.

Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

What is a blood moon? A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon. In a blood moon, the moon is full, and as the sun’s light passes through the earth’s atmosphere, it casts a reddened shadow on the moon. Full lunar eclipses are rare, and blood moons even more so, but neither is unheard of. The next total Lunar Eclipse will occur on April 4th, 2015…

Photographs of Historic Little Farm House on 3/8/15

Historic Little Farm House on Sunday, March 8, 2105.

“Heralded by Miami historians and design enthusiasts alike, (formerly known as The Magic City Farm) is, by any measure, a unique place. Built in the 1920’s, located on a bend of the Little River section of the Miami River on the edge of Little Haiti, is an eclectic one-acre oasis consisting of a 1,200 square foot farm house, two story boathouse and six colorful cottages featuring rustic furnishings – all made out of Dade County pine and rescued from a trailer park down the road.”

“A throw back in time, wildlife freely roam on or about the property, from the manatees that drift by slowly on the river close to the three hundred foot sea wall, to the ducks, chickens and iguanas that can be seen as they wander about on the lush grounds, a large area planted with native and exotic trees. Each of the eight structures on the property is charming in its own way, some painted in cheerful Caribbean colors, others in varying tones of white.  The cabins, some of which have kitchens and bathrooms, and the boathouse, which has both, have been leased for short stays.”

The property (281 N.E. 84 Street, Miami, Florida 33138) has been featured in photo and film shoots and is available for events. For bookings, please contact the new owner, Gabriella von Rosen at info@miamifarmhouse.com.

Miguel Rodez’s gives us a glimpse into his fantasy world in his new exhibit “Spring Forward” through a collection of paintings and monotypes that will be on view just in time for the Spring Equinox. Emphasizing the sensuality of flowers is nothing new. Georgia O’Keefe and others have done it in the past. However, Rodez makes an impressive entrance into this genre with flowers that are no ordinary blooms. Using what some have described as magical realism, he creates sexy flowers, endowed with much more than just beauty. These lusty creations manage to be bold without being vulgar. Experience the fantasy on Saturday, March 21,

ABOUT THE FILM FESTIVAL

This one-day film festival will explore cinema’s stylish film noir and neo-noir genres in the developing world. Film noir from the 1930s-1950s is characterized by stark, angular shadows; conflicted anti-heroes; chiaroscuro lighting; determined, beautiful, scheming women; obscured scenes; and isolation in modern cities. Neo-noir addresses philosophical questions about the essence of human nature, guilt, redemption, and problems of knowledge, memory and identity, while blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and evil. Two films per genre will be screened to introduce and expose the art of stylized filmmaking and foreign films in Opa-locka.

FREE public event. Viewer discretion is advised as some films may not be suitable for children.

ABOUT THE FILMS & SCREENING TIMES

12:00 PM – The Goddess (“Shennü” – 1934, China) – 85 minutes, drama, PG
Street walker by night, devoted mother by day, a woman fights to get her son an education amid criminal and social injustice in China. Dismissed as immoral by scholars during the Cultural Revolution, it is now one of the best known films of China’s cinematic golden age. Directed by Wu Yonggang.

2:00 PM – Three Monkeys (“Üç maymun” – 2008, Turkey) – 109 minutes, drama, unrated
This strange detective story set in Istanbul traces the journey of a family struggling to stay together and ignore responsibilities by not seeing, hearing, or talking about the truth. Won Best Special Effects at the Golden Orange Film Festival, Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Golden Anchor Competition Award at the Haifa International Film Festival. Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

4:00 PM – Bob the Gambler (“Bob Le Flambeur” – 1956, France) – 98 minutes, drama/thriller, PG
A tribute to classic American gangster films and inspiration for French New Wave filmmakers, Bob Le Flambeur is about an aging gangster and gambler in Paris who navigates the treacherous world of pimps, moneymen and naïve associates while plotting one last score: the heist of the Deauville casino. Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.

6:00 PM – How to Steal 2 Million (2011, South Africa) – 84 minutes, drama/action, ages 16+
A dark crime drama set in gritty, unforgiving city streets, the film follows a robber who gets out of jail and finds that his partner, who never got caught, has married his former fiancée. Desperate for cash, he agrees to help his partner out with a deviant plan in this South African homage to film noir. Won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Achievement in Editing at the 2012 African Movie Academy Awards. Directed by Charlie Vundla.

Kick off O, Miami Poetry Festival and National Poetry Month with the smoothest event April: a lyrical boat cruise up the Miami River.

Co-created and -produced with O, Miami , Miami River Poetry Cruise is a journey into the Heart of Dade-ness, guided by locals, protected by pythons, and serenaded by some of Miami’s best poets in a round-robin, “tour-guide” format invented just for this occasion. Hear the first-ever Prayer to Bayside, the second Ode to Fort Dallas, and settle, once and for all, via poetry, the debate of which is the better fish spot: Garcia’s or Casablanca?

Tickets will include free beer provided by Biscayne Bay Brewing. (After that, it’s a cash bar. Yes, there’s a bar on the boat. Why would you ever get on a boat that DIDN’T have a bar?) Light snacks will be provided.

The cruise boards promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Bayside Marina, travels up the Miami River, and re-docks in Bayside at 8:30 p.m.

Your ticket also gets you a free drink at the Official Afterparty at The Intercontinental Hotel.

Photographs of The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on 3/10/15

The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

Future Painting, is the culmination of 4 years of research into video mapped paintings and will feature various approaches to integrating video and technology into mixed-media collage paintings. Through the use of video projections on top of physical paintings and translucent collages created directly on the face of video screens, Justin Wood transforms and twists the physical composition into a mesmerizing psychedelic experience. These works challenge the viewers perception of where the physical world ends and where the digital world begins and asks the question, Can painting and video exist at the same time? The show will also feature a site specific interactive wall painting that will respond to the depth and motion of the viewer through the use of a Kinect sensor, and allow the viewer to transform the video with their movement.

About 2015 Public Space Challenge:  “The annual contest will again seek ideas to connect Miami-Dade residents by creating, improving and activating public gathering places like parks, libraries, plazas, community gardens and playgrounds.  Anyone – individuals, groups, agencies, nonprofits or companies – can submit ideas at ourmiami.org/challenge through the April 1stsubmission deadline.  We encourage the community to weigh in on the ideas by liking, sharing and commenting on them.  The Challenge offers a way for everyone to help advance the cause by putting solutions in the hands of residents who have a passion for this place; your voice and input is critical for this platform to work.”

“In an effort to invest in bigger ideas, mobilize more people and see greater results, The Miami Foundation and our partners have upped the total prize amount to a fitting $305,000.  Our Challenge sponsors Health Foundation of South Florida, who is entering their third year of supporting the contest, and Baptist Health South Florida, who is partnering with us for the first time, have each committed funds to the total.
