Pop-Up Exhibit featuring works of Robert Mapplethorpe
Venture inside the mind of one of the 20th Century’s most important artists, and come face to face with his provocative masterpieces. Presented on a scale worthy of its artistic impact, this digital gallery features rare and revealing commentary from the photographer himself.

“Look at the pictures,” said Senator Jesse Helms, denouncing the controversial art of Robert Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed boundaries with frank depictions of nudity, sexuality and fetishism, igniting a culture war that rages to this day.

More than 25 years later, the HBO Documentary Films presentation MAPPLETHORPE: LOOK AT THE PICTURES does just that, taking an unflinching, unprecedented look at his most provocative work.

As The J. Paul Getty Museum and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art prepare landmark Mapplethorpe retrospectives (both opening in March), the film goes inside the preparation for the exhibitions as a jumping-off point to tell the complete story of his life and work, and explore the interplay between his personal and professional lives.

With complete and unprecedented access to The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, the documentary draws upon archival materials and features never-before-seen photographs and footage. Mapplethorpe himself is a strong presence, telling his story in his own words with complete honesty and often shocking candor through rediscovered audio interviews.

Almost all of the people from key relationships in his life are included in the film, including his first girlfriend, Patti Smith, one in a string of profoundly influential lovers.

The Young Artist Initiative presents a new partnership with Cafeina Miami. The second Young Artist Initiative at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge is Friday, March 4th with an incredible lineup of musicians, installations, live performances, exhibits, and more!

As a race, we live in a continuum of constant evolution. Countless minds have brought forth change to consciousness and culture and have moved our societies forward, restructuring the dynamics of our generations.

The ever-growing presence of technology in our daily lives has transcended the nature of a “trend” and has come to resemble a strong pillar in the structure of our approach to the life before us. It has changed the way we create, interact, and coexist, and has consequentially brought change to art.

For the next installment of the Young Artist Initiative, we have carefully selected technology and its cultural stigmas as the concept base for live art and activations.

All artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing technology’s role and impact on the arts across their selected mediums and comprehensively blending visual and metaphorical elements in order to present a personal interpretation of the matter.

We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflection of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists on Friday, March 4th at Cafeina Miami at 7 p.m.

John Dowd shares, “This show is a further exploration of my interest in the landscape of Southern Florida… the surreal juxtaposition of the geometric modernist architecture often with vivid colors set against the lush tropical vegetation… the highly artificial night lighting creating a sense of the romantic and yet unreal… dreamlike … vacillating between the worlds of attraction and detachment. This is what I see.”

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

Pérez Art Museum Miami

Miami, FL 33132
Become an Ambassador for African American Art to receive an invitation: pamm.org/artfund.

On February 16, 2016, Pérez Art Museum Miami will welcome more than 500 Ambassadors for African American Art to the museum for a celebration at the Third Annual Reception for the PAMM Fund for African American Art presented by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The evening will showcase a performance, Ground (In Progress), presented by PAMM exhibition artist Nari Ward. Ground (In Progress) is a floor-based sculpture made from 700 copper-topped bricks and adorned with painted geometric symbols drawn from the Underground Railroad directional code. Five local dancers will perform and improvise atop Ward’s sculpture and respond to its ideas of the untouchable and monumental nature of works of fine art using a range of dance styles.

In addition, guests will enjoy a musical performance by Girl Power’s Girls’ Choir of Miami, a local organization that strives to provide opportunities for girls in a year-round quality music education program, and a complimentary dinner reception with a musical performance by Ketchy Shuby on the East Portico.

Initiated with a $1 million grant, funded equally by Jorge M. Pérez and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the PAMM Fund for African American Art builds on PAMM’s longstanding commitment to exhibiting and collecting the work of African American artists. The support of PAMM’s Ambassadors for African American Art help grow the collection with works by significant artists such as Al Loving, Faith Ringgold, Rashid Johnson, Kehinde Wiley, Purvis Young and more.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents “Coppelia”.

Miami, Fl. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, one of South Florida’s most acclaimed ballet companies, will present the third program of the season with the delightful and lovely ballet comedy:”Coppelia”. It will run March 5th -6th at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, and March 12th -13th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at the Amaturo Theater.

Coppelia is considered one of the most famous ballets of the classical repertoire. Vladimir Issaev’s version, based on the original work by Arthur Saint Leon is presented as a dynamic and entertaining ballet that will awe audience of all ages and allow everyone to enjoy it in a very unique way.

Issaev will keep the elements of the piece which are traditional ballet, character dance and pantomime, but adding the very peculiar humor and freshness of his works, which is already a trend in his choreographies. The original version was released on May 25, 1870 at the Paris Opera. It tells the story of Doctor Coppélius, a mysterious and absent minded inventor who created a mechanic life-size dancing doll: Coppelia. It is so lifelike that Franz (Daniel Sarabia or Hernan Montenegro), a village youth, is mesmerized by her beauty and is determined to attract her attention setting aside his true love, Swanhilda (Mary Carmen Catoya or Lillian Hill). She shows Frank his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will have the participation of more than 20 professional dancers. The most advanced students of Vladimir Issaev School of Classical Ballet have been invited to perform along the professional dancers of the company.

Coppelia will feature the debut of talented Cuban dancer Daniel Sarabia, who is joining Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and sharing his extensive experience with the company. Having graduated from the National Ballet School of Cuba, Sarabia has been part of the Boston Ballet Company, The Béjart Ballet Lausanne (Switzerland), and was principal dancer of Miami City Ballet. He has also been in major productions dancing principal roles in Latin America, Asia and Europe.

Coppelia will be presented March 5 & 6 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and March 12 & 13 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

érémy Gobé, who lives and works in Paris, imbues objects that he finds in his path with new purpose. In his room-sized installation, Freedom Leading Wool, Gobé uses fabric and mesh to create a dramatic enveloping space. The red wool, claimed from a shuttered factory in rural France, recalls a dying industry and its displaced craftsmen. This work references the 1830 masterpiece by Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, recalling the movement, drama and patriotism of that iconic work. On view through FEB 28, 2016

In addition to this installation, a new work by Gobé, Nature’s Imagination Scares Me, will be on view in the storefront galleries at 23rd and Collins Avenue as part of tc: temporary contemporary, the Bass Museum of Art’s public art program.

Red bows suggest a promise or a kiss… Bows are ribbons that have been tied into decorative knots, ancient symbols of strength, unions, loyalty, and beauty. Red Bows are at once reminders of all that is important…tie a red string around your finger so as not to forget… In eastern cultures red ribbons connect people who are destined to meet, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

His life was as bizarre as his paintings: Melting clocks, tigers leaping out of nowhere, flaming giraffes, mills powered by butterflies, women with protruding drawers, and plenty of overt and subtle sexual references to go around. Paintings charged with religiosity that ranged from the blasphemous to the pious. A personal life that resembled a circus. A financial success wrapped inside of a financial disaster. Famous for being famous. Sexual exploits to make a herd of prudes squirm. An ego that hardly fit within the universe. Many described him as a skilled painter; others, unh-uh, not so much. What is undeniable though is that he was among the most creative artists of the XX Century.

Miguel Rodez has challenged himself and a select group of artists to create artwork in their own style, but incorporating an image of Salvador Dalí’s face within the work, along with some element of Dalí’s ideas. It is an art project that is intended an homage to both Dalí and his artwork. Several artists have taken up the challenge. Their work, which includes drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, fine art photography, and other media, will be shown at FACING DaLí in January 2016. You are invited to share in this experience.

This solo show, called “PONZOÑA,” is the second one he’s had in the U.S and prior to that his work has appeared in various galleries around the world including Barcelona, Italy, Mexico, London and New York City. Ciler’s unapologetic work is best known for the defacement and manipulation of existing images with an often-dark archaeological intent to unearth today’s dysfunctional society. Canada’s Corno Presents Her Debut South Florida Gallery Exhibition During Art Basel Miami 12/4/15

Canada’s Corno Presents Her Debut South Florida Gallery Exhibition During Art Basel Miami
CORNO with ArtworkFriday, December 4th, 7:30pm
Markowicz Fine Art Gallery
110 NE 40th Street
Miami, FL 33137

The highly acclaimed queen of Canada’s art world and one of North America’s female royalty in artistic expression, Corno, will be presenting her first exhibition in Miami as one of the city’s headlining female artists during this year’s Art Basel. Joanne will make her very first career appearance during the international art world’s most prestigious week, celebrated throughout the City of Miami and Miami Beach, December 3—6.

The opening preview night of the Corno Exhibition, presented by Corno Studio and hosted by Miami’s preeminent fund manager, Simon Librati of 212 Investment Fund LP, will take place on Friday, December 4th, starting at 7:30pm, at the renowned Markowicz Fine Art Gallery in Miami’s Design District, with an illustrious VIP attendance anticipated in honor of the Quebec-born artist who currently resides in New York. The self-titled gallery exhibit will feature a broad selection of Corno’s work that exemplifies her neo-expressionist approach – harmonizing abstract with figurative, using bold textures, movement and colors that encompasses her signature style. Corno’s inaugural Miami exhibition will be at the Markowicz Gallery for the entire month of December.

“I am delighted to be presenting my very first exhibition in Miami during this year’s Art Basel,” says Corno. “I’m aware that some of the world’s greatest talent from all four corners of the globe converge in South Florida during this time of the year, and I am excited to be part of such a prestigious week. I have dedicated the summer to creating some of my most interesting work that I am bringing down to Miami for the exhibit, and I look forward to sharing my latest collections with everyone. I am privileged to be presenting my work at the Markowicz Gallery – which is such an esteemed name to be associated with.”

A diverse selection from Corno’s own hand-picked compilation will be on display at the Markowicz Gallery, ranging from acrylic on canvas pieces in her recent collection of Faces to mixed media on canvas artwork for her extensive collection of popular Portraits depicting Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol. Her alternative anthology of Nudes and Drawings, developed with acrylic on paper, demonstrates the long history of talent and diversity that Corno has sustained throughout her career as a leading pop artist over the last thirty years.

Corno has successfully mastered her technique to the point where her style is immediately recognizable. Getting to the essence of Corno`s artistic inquiry are her acrylics on paper. These drawings clearly demonstrate the artist`s abstract and figurative strengths while exuding a raw pure energy that perpetually moves throughout each work. Every line, shape and color can be perceived in all its precision and spontaneity, leaving little room for error. These drawings reflect a refined talent, blending Corno`s creative flow and technical strengths. With each confident brushstroke, she leaves a permanent imprint on the paper.

Corno paints faces to catch the emotions they hide. Playing on bold facial expressions, dramatic colors choices and highly gestural abstract elements, she infuses her work with dynamic energy. A painting by Corno is like a zoom in on powerful feelings. With trademark large formats, she paints huge artworks that can be both overpowering and utterly seductive: faces larger than life. From her smallest details to her large sweeping brush strokes, her art works catch viewers off guard and invite them on a breathtaking inner journey.

Made in New York, Corno’s giclées are printed in limited number on 100% cotton, museum-quality paper. The velvet-like characteristics of this surface ensures the highest quality rendering and lifelong duration of each print. They are individually examined, numbered and signed by Corno. She is very selective in choosing the paintings to be reproduced into giclées as only a small handful are selected. She also chooses the formats and edition sizes. Certificates of Authenticity are included with each Corno giclée.

Gallery Diet opening of Ann Craven’s I Like Blue 11/30/15

Gallery Diet opening of Ann Craven’s I Like Blue
Monday, November 30th from 5PM to 8PM.

Miami, FL 33150

Gallery Diet is pleased to present I Like Blue, an exhibition of new paintings by Ann Craven opening Monday, November 30th and remaining on view until January 9th, 2016. Through these paintings, Craven converses with the histories of landscape painting and conceptual art, and with the passage of time itself.

These paintings come from summers spent in Cushing, Maine, where Craven has kept a home and studio for years. At night, she paints the moon en plein air, often by candlelight. Slightly larger than a square foot, they are hasty compositions, with a pared down palette and an economy of gesture. Like consecutive views of the moon, they manage to be both the same and different. Painting outdoors, under a sky quite different than that above New York, Craven engages contemporary and historic painters such as Alex Katz (who she assisted for seven years) Georgia O’Keeffe and Claude Monet. Yet the landscape is just a starting place. Craven returns to her New York studio and remakes the paintings, scaling up the intimate size of the originals to five square feet. They are not exact remakes; neither the palette nor the brushstroke are the same, merely similar. She then uses the leftover paint to create her stripe paintings, which are also on display.

By repainting the original paintings, she does not delegate a hierarchy of preparatory version and final product. Rather, she loosely stacks three mo- ments of time: the time spent on the first painting, the time elapsed between the two paintings, and the time spent painting the second version. In this, she charges the landscape genre with the understanding of temporality similar to the conceptual practices of On Kawara or Agnes Martin. The system Craven uses to employ the leftover, unused paint into bands of color can be seen as the forth phase or a closure to the three moments mentioned above. It is an added pleasure to see these works in Miami, a place known for its charged relationship to nature and history.

I Like Blue continues Craven’s exploration of painting as an index of our lived experience. Though painted with immediacy, Craven understands that these works can never fully capture the moment they seek to address. Instead, there is a lag, an inescapable temporal parallax. It is in that space that she best operates. Her work is playful, yet, since inseparable from time’s flight, bittersweet. Also on view is a painting of a bird.

Ann Craven lives and works in New York City and Maine. She recently had her first retrospective, Time, curated by Yann Chevalier at Le Confort Moderne in Poitiers, France (2014). She has exhibited widely, including Southard Reid, London (2015); Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles (2014); Maccarone, New York (2013); The Green Gallery, Milwaukee (2013); Galerie Perrotin, Paris (2013); White Columns, New York (2013); Eva Presenhu- ber, Zurich (2013); Gladstone, New York (2012); and Marianne Boesky, New York (2012). Craven’s work has been reviewed in publications including LA Times, Art in America, the New York Times, Artforum, Flash Art, The New Yorker, Frieze and Modern Painters. Her paintings are in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum, New York; the New Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contempo- rary Art in Chicago, among others. Gallery Diet owner Nina Johnson-Milewski assisted Craven in 2005.

Gallery Diet is a contemporary art space in Miami, Florida. Since 2007, the gallery has produced exhibitions by emerging and established artists from around the world. The gallery works alongside artists to produce ambitious projects both within the confines of the gallery space and beyond.

Kicking off the Miami Art Week, Ricieri Art Studio presents a red carpet night for a unique exhibition featuring the Italian-Brazilian Artist Roberto Ricieri on December 1. The Emotions of R. Ricieri will display over 100 works by the artist, including his highly regarded Infinity Series of paintings, as well as sculptures and drawings. Attendees will also enjoy a hardcover book with five of his collections, a documentary movie, his own testimony about his time in captivity and how it led to him becoming an artist.

Born in 1959 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ricieri has created more than 1,000 paintings, using acrylic on canvas, along drawing with pencil and carbon. He discovered his style and way of thinking about art in prison, which affected his work with real life inspiration and deep emotion. Admired by many, Ricieri never attended art school. As an entrepreneur, he often traveled to Europe and North America where he spent much of his time observing the masters of art in museums around the world.

The Infinity Collections by R. Ricieri are a collaboration between the Tara Art Collection Sylvia White Gallery of Los Angeles California and the Noel Santiesteban. This exhibition beautifully combines his innovative work with fascinating aspects of his life in captivity. The 130-page book titled “Ricieri: The Art Born from Captivity” will be released at the event for purchase. The publication includes 80 full-color paintings by the artist.

Massive Urban Art Block Party To Debut In Wynwood. Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood has become synonymous with graffiti, urban art, murals and street art, and it offers a unique way for the public to experience this art form. This year, Mana Wynwood, Mana Contemporary and the Bushwick Collective have teamed up to launch the Mana Urban Arts Project at the iconic RC Cola Plant in Miami. To celebrate this historic occasion, they joined forces with Basel House to host a free, four-day block party during Art Basel Week. The Basel House & Bushwick Collective Block Party will be the epicenter of the graffiti world this December. RSVP for the Launch Party to get a Free Drink.

The Block Party will showcase some of the world’s top street artists including Ghost (NY), GIZ (NY), Case Maclaim (Germany), Shok1 (England), Atomik (Florida), Lola Blu (Florida), Crash One TATS CRU (NY), Don Rimx (Florida), Sipros (Brazil), James Cochran (Australia), Aiko (US/Japan), SPOK (Spain), Hoxxoh (Florida) and Trek6 (Florida), to name a few. These artists will transform the RC Cola Plant with an entire body of new murals and paintings. Artists will be painting live throughout the four-day event. In addition, The Heineken® Mobile Art Experience will make a stop with their branded truck, which will feature a rotating canvas on the outside and a fully stocked art store and gallery on the inside. In addition, a free concert series featuring Fat Joe and other hip hop legends will add to the colorful backdrop. DJ’s, arts & craft vendors will also be present. It wouldn’t be Wynwood without the Food Trucks, so Basel House has secured a swarm of South Florida favorites; from lobster to hot dogs, you name it, they’ll be serving it up!

Curating the collaboration is Joe Ficalora of the Bushwick Collective from Brooklyn. The Bushwick Collective was born on the streets of Brooklyn as a way for Joe to cope with personal tragedy. The Collective transformed a large section of the Bushwick neighborhood into a colorful and vibrant work of urban art. Many of those artists will be making the trip to Miami to help launch the Wynwood location of the Mana Urban Arts Project. “We are proud to showcase some of the best artists from around the world, and we hope to inspire the masses,” explains Joe.

The team at SWARM is known for hosting incredible events throughout South Florida, and Basel House will be no different. “We are honored to be working with the Bushwick Collective and Mana,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO and Basel House Director. “The only way to launch this unique project is with a complete and utter blowout, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Curated by Tumelo Mosaka, “Through the Eyes of Others” aims to provide a critical platform for re-imaging the past, present and future possibilities of blackness as something more complex than race. What words, actions and images can interrogate the culture of violence, distrust and hatred applied to black people? While stereotypical images of black people continue to reinforce negative attitudes, work in the exhibit resists and defies easy consumption of these subjects. Participating artists include Ebony G. Patterson, Dread Scott, Hank Willis Thomas, and Bernard Williams.

With events such as Art of Transformation, OLCDC hopes to achieve its goal of transforming Opa-locka into one of the region’s better known centers of the arts, culture and living. This exhibition is a vital part of gaining awareness for a community of choice where people want to live, work, play and create, which is made possible through OLCDC’s investment in the community.

A true multidisciplinary artist, Fab also explored film, music and television projects, collaborating on the cult classic film Wild Style, producing rap videos for artists including Queen Latifah, KRS-One, and Shabba Ranks, and hosting Yo! MTV Raps, an assignment that established his image as one of the godfathers of the hip-hop scene.

As Miami grows into a major global city and establishes its cultural identity, Young Artists Initiative (YAI), an avant-garde collective of young artists has made it their mission to contribute a unique substance to the landscape of culture and art.

Just like the Impressionists challenged the Académie des Beaux-Arts with their independent exhibitions in 19th Century Paris, or street artists such as Banksy stirred emotion in the streets of London in the 90s, YAI brings together young, forward-thinking artists to shape the face of their growing world-class city.

Calling the burgeoning artistic hubs of Miami their home, their vision is of a Miami recognized for class and connoisseurship in modern art forms, including all various genres that inhabit Miami’s underground, waiting to burst to the surface. Welcome to their vision.

You are cordially invited to the Young Artist Initiative’s first showcase at Cafeina Wynwood on Friday, October 23rd. Event starts at 7:00PM with no cover at the door.

You will witness numerous art installations, live painting performances, a fashion show curated by the creators of the Miami-based blog, Iron N Salt and live music and much more. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to become an active member of the Miami art life!

The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) is proud to announce LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING, a collaborative project between MCAD and EXILE Books, a Miami-based, pop-up artist’s book store. LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING is a groundbreaking program that seeks to bridge the understanding between downtown Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, specifically addressing visual impairments. Opening September 3, 2015, the exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.

LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING will transform ten Downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau via four main components:

The MCAD gallery will feature tactile relief works of selected downtown buildings with accompanying wall texts provided in braille.

The public, front steps of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) will house the project’s central component: an outdoor audio piece that will share engaging stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD’s home) as well as surrounding downtown buildings. The audio installation will be accompanied by a large, vinyl, floor applique inviting passersby to “LISTEN” to the building.

To further enhance the exhibit, students from FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Miami Beach Urban Studios will create models of selected downtown buildings using a 3-D printing process. These renderings will be displayed in covered boxes obscuring their visual properties so that audiences must feel the building to experience the architecture.

To commemorate the exhibition, EXILE Books will also produce an artist’s book in which the architectural narratives from the outdoor audio piece will be transcribed in braille. There will be no photographs or printed text in the publication, only tactile reliefs of each building, effectively compelling the viewer to experience Miami through new and distinct paradigms.

The exhibition is believed to be the first architectural exhibit designed to address accessibility for persons with visual impairments. MCAD and EXILE Books will co-host a slate of weekly events during the six-week exhibition to engage the public on issues of art, architecture, and accessibility. The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2015 to October 17, 2015.

The exhibition, mobility tours, and braille artist book are made possible with the support of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Support for EXILE Books is made possible through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Printing and consulting for the project generously provided by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Tactile illustrations offered by John De Salvo and Judith McBrien as featured in the Norton’s Pocket Guide to Miami Architecture. Programming partners include Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ability Explosion, Florida International University’s College for Architecture + the Arts, and IlluminArts. Additional sponsorship provided by Thomas Printworks and SFCA isaw + Subtropics.

Yo Miami & Kondoit
A hub for local artists, Yo Miami has grown since 2011 into an ecosystem where creatives can get access to resources & contacts to help them reach the next level of success in their careers. By working with businesses, nonprofi t & community organizations we are able to foster a network which enables us to create opportunities throughout the year for artists to demonstrate their talents in ways that add value to our neighborhoods. With several monthly events at various venues around Wynwood, we continually o ffer a platform where emerging artists can reach a wider audience. At the same time, we show business owners the benefits associated with incorporating arts programming into their operations, & help foster the growth of our local communities through this synergy. For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

Chalk-tacular: 3-Acre Art Project to Reclaim Dan Paul Park
August 8, 1-4PM
Parcel B (the waterfront property due east of AA Arena)
Downtown Miami, FL
Facebook

If you draw it, it will come. On August 8th, hundreds of students, families and local artists are teaming up with Engage Miami and a growing coalition of Miami-based community groups to send a very big message to Miami Dade County commissioners and the Heat. This coalition of community groups, students, and artists will work together to create a massive 3-acre chalk drawing that will cover the entire sheet of asphalt currently sitting on top of the infamous Parcel B site (the waterfront property due east of the American Airlines Arena). They want the County and the Heat to deliver the “world-class waterfront park” that was a centerpiece of the advertising campaign the Heat used to persuade Miami-Dade county voters to pass the referendum in favor of building the AA Arena back in 1996.

Co-hosts for this event include Engage Miami and Chalk Project, Catalyst Miami, Center for Social Change, Celebrate Diversity Miami, Colony1, Dark Matter Collective, Dream Defenders, Emerge Miami, Guitars Over Guns, Guns Down Bikes Up, Instagramers Miami, Miami City Chess Club, Miami Parks Foundation, New Leaders Council Miami, The New Florida Majority, The New Tropic, Roots Collective, SMIA Group / Sustainable Miami, Urban Environment League, Urban Paradise Guild UPG and the list is growing.

“We hope this day of fun-filled community engagement will send a strong message to Miami-Dade County commissioners and to the Heat that Miami residents won’t back down until we get what we’ve been promised,”says Maydee Martinez (19), an Engage Miami board member and current MDC student.
Miami residents’ promised park (including a mini-soccer field) remains just that, a promise. Residents have been waiting 20 years.

“When you don’t get what you want, you gotta do it yourself. And when you do it yourself you might as well go big– real big,” says Nando Jaramillo of Colony 1 urban farm in Wynwood.
To drive their message home: They’re striving to win a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of independent chalk drawings done in a single setting. The current record is 308 drawings is held by a group in Toyama, Japan.

In addition to reaching out to other community groups, coalition members will send invitations to all county and city commissioners. But, Justin Wales, an event organizer and leader of Engage Miami, says that just showing up is not enough:
“Let’s be clear. Residents, especially young people, are tired of waiting for our elected officials to act. We are claiming this park for the public, as it was promised to us, and we ask that young people across Miami join us.”

Art + Performance + Outreach

JULY 18, 2015 | 7-11pm

The organizers, Niki Lopez and Alana DaCosta, of The Elephant Exhibition invites you attend the opening reception at 1310 Gallery which is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.), Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 on July 18, 2013.

The Elephant Exhibition is a group arts exhibition featuring work that challenges both artist and viewer to consider their choices about what in our lives, should be revealed and what should be hidden. We want the elephant out in the open so we can find release…

“The Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss, It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

Visual Artists include: Niki Lopez; Alana DaCosta; Allison Kotzig; Rolando Chang Barrero, Judy Leeson Polstra, Sonia Baez-Hernandez, Dianne Rosenberg; Ian Barnes, Susan Buzzi, Rene Gordon and others come together in a visual dialogue to revel their The Elephant.

Opening night will be hosted by Spoken word artist Chunky with performances by Chaos Theory, Dawn Robinson , 2015 Dada National Slam Team, Tico Armand, Yoli Mayor & others.

Astolfo Funes’s theme is “women,” but in reality, the “feminine” as an expression of a universe that belongs to humans, which he loves. Funes’ Women are concept and form, are underground issues that arise in extraordinary colors, glow encased in large black lines. The face in the foreground of one of his current series, accuses changes since the beginning of the first decade. Face emerges from the back of the fabric to penetrate the viewer’s personal life, saying you are like me, while the individualist sentiment appears exaggerated in his own connections to feelings and emotions.

Join us for his exhibition in the Artisan Lounge in Gallery 1 and 3. Free admission.
