Kids and families can now play and save the day with the heroic PAW Patrol™ pups, at the brand-new PAW Patrol: Adventure Play traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare, opening September 12 at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment. The exhibit runs through January 10, 2026.
Families will visit Adventure Bay with a group of eight rescue pups. Each pup is inspired by a real-world job like a police officer (Chase), a firefighter (Marshall), a construction worker (Rubble), a fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect the community on the TV show, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude. In the process, kids learn about different jobs within a community and how those real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy.
Each of the pups has special skills, gadgets and vehicles to help them on their rescue missions. In the exhibit, families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower. They can head to Jake’s Mountain and scope things out near the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller, push buttons, and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow. Those with a taste for foodie adventures can whip up tasty treats in Porter’s Café and help Adventure Bay win the Tallest Cake Competition by stacking cake layers as high as they can. Families can also cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

The hands-on, immersive PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit is a fun way for the whole family to learn bravery and heroism, with exciting stories. The whole family will learn how to combine their skills to problem-solve together and save the day.

Wanna Be Weekends in October and November: No Job Too Big!
MODS will extend the PAW Patrol: Adventure Play experience with Wanna Be Weekends, taking place every Saturday and Sunday in October and November. These themed weekends feature engaging, hands-on activities highlighting real-life community heroes and STEAM-based careers. From designing rescue vehicles and building homes to meeting local police officers, firefighters, first responders and even learning how to be a pilot, families will discover how teamwork, compassion and problem-solving shape the world around us. Thanks to support from the JetBlue Foundation, young aviators will have the chance to explore flight science and aviation careers through special programming and guest speakers.

On select days, Chewy VetCare will also host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers by practicing empathy and learning how to care for pets and other animals in need.

Each weekend brings new partners, fresh adventures and opportunities for children to imagine how they can make a difference just like the heroic pups of Adventure Bay.

PAW Patrol: Adventure Play was produced by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in partnership with Nickelodeon. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit committed to creating extraordinary family learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts will host its free annual open house showcasing fall classes on Saturday August 23, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. First time students who register in person at the open house will receive a 10% discount.

During the open house, guests can tour the education center, observe or participate in classes, meet the teaching artists, sing in Broadway Karaoke, win prizes, and enjoy an array of family activities and light refreshments.

Singing, dance, improv and acting classes for children, teens and adults at the Broward Center are designed to encourage artistic expression and teach theater skills in a fun and supportive environment. Special classes for people with physical and intellectual disabilities are also available. Additionally, students have the opportunity to audition to be in a show or represent the Broward Center at upcoming community performances.

Fall classes begin on Tuesday, September 2 and the majority continue for 10 weeks. Classes are limited in size and tailored to the appropriate age and skill levels from beginner to more advanced. All class fees include complimentary parking. Online class registration is quick and user friendly, and students who purchase a second class can enjoy a 10% discount on any additional class.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “A Stitch in Time,” a vibrant series of quilt shows in collaboration with local textile guilds. This free public exhibition series, launching with the Sunday, September 7 collaboration with the Southern Star Quilt Guild, will celebrate the artistry and tradition of quilting, bringing colorful stories to life through fabric and craftsmanship.

Quilt lovers and curious visitors alike are invited to enjoy these one-day-only pop-up displays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., coinciding with the City’s Riverwalk Jazz Brunch series. Quilts will be on display draped over the second-story balcony and showcased inside the New River Inn Museum, offering visitors a rich blend of craftsmanship and history.

Additional shows are scheduled for Sunday, October 5 and Sunday, March 8, 2026 with collaborators to be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Garcia, director of Scholarly Programs and Partnerships at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. Garcia will present from his monograph-in-progress, “Without Order: Booksellers and the Failures of the Early American Book Trades, 1679-1825.”

As we approach the 200th anniversary of Freedom’s Journal (1827), the first African American periodical, Garcia will explore Black labor in the world of books across colonial North America, the British Caribbean, and the early United States. Focusing on three key bibliographical sites—the library, the printing office, and the paper mill—the presentation reimagines expressions of community, expertise, and resistance in these spaces. Free and enslaved communities played a central role in shaping early American print culture, influencing libraries, print shops, and paper mills in often surprising and overlooked ways.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

When I became deaf at the age of 23, I decided to get a cochlear implant. As I began to regain my memories of lost sounds, I asked myself: How does someone who doesn’t hear listen?
Diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural progressive hearing loss in the first grade, Charo became fully deaf by the age of 23, and received a cochlear implant against her parents’ wishes. Structured with eight distinct stories and questions, Mato’s autobiographical documentary flits between childhood stories and digressive memories, the scientific and medical explanations of hearing loss and implants, and poetic ruminations on the nature of life and language. Mato uses the film to process her own experience, interweaving home videos of her childhood with the stories and lives of people she’s interviewing for the film, and exploring the stories and lives of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing while resisting a monolithic experience. MODS Sensory-Friendly Sundays provide a sensory sensitive environment for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. The museum is open two hours early for exploration and activities followed by an IMAX film at 12:30 p.m.

To provide a more sensory-sensitive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, the theater lights will be turned up and the sound will be lowered. All films will be presented in 2D and no trailers will be shown before the movie. Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance and shout without worrying about complaints. Families can bring snacks from home, blankets and other small items to make themselves comfortable.

Throughout the Museum, children can participate in a variety of sensory-based activities. They can engage in social interactions and improve their processing, modulation and regulation of sensory input to increase their participation in a natural environment.

Follow Carlo as she navigates the highs and lows of attending her ex’s wedding while dealing with her own heartbreak in Island City Stage’s South Florida premiere of At the Wedding by Bryna Turner, running August 21 – September 14. At the Wedding premiered off-Broadway at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater in 2022. A story of loss, love and redemption, the play focuses on the world’s loneliest (and wittiest) single woman, Carlo, as she crashes her ex-girlfriend’s wedding to a man. Through a series of flirtations, conversations, and collisions with past lovers, old enemies, new friends and perfect strangers, Carlo strives to understand whether or not heartbreak is a permanent human condition.

New York Theatre Guide called At the Wedding “Bitterly funny… wisecracking and wisdom-sharing about the unbreakable bond between love and pain… there’s a fun time to be had at this wedding.” The New York Times shared, “Fresh and trenchant… The lines are funny; Turner has a boxer’s sense of the two-punch rhythm of jokes… Authorial patience is part of what makes At the Wedding so fresh; though there are plenty of one-liners, it is not a yuk-yuk comedy foisting its laughs at you or over-signaling its intentions… Also revivifying is the way Turner reshapes the wedding genre for our time, inviting new characters to the party.”

Plays of Wilton (POW!) and Ronnie Larsen Presents are proud to announce the highly anticipated South Florida revival of Torch Song by Harvey Fierstein, running July 17 through August 31, 2025, at newly renovated Foundry Theater in Wilton Manors, Thursday through Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM.
Directed by Ronnie Larsen, this newly staged production of Fierstein’s Tony Award-winning play tells the deeply personal and powerfully resonant story of Arnold Beckoff, a Jewish drag queen and torch song singer navigating life, love, and family in 1970s and 1980s New York City. Funny, raw, and tender, Torch Song traces Arnold’s journey as he searches for intimacy, family, stability, and—perhaps most importantly—respect.
Originally written as Torch Song Trilogy, Fierstein revised the play into a two-act format in 2017 for Second Stage Theater. It later transferred to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater in 2018, reminding audiences of the enduring relevance and humanity of Arnold’s story.
At its heart, Torch Song is about belonging. Arnold wants what everyone else does: love, family, and a sense of purpose. But as a gay man in a society that barely acknowledges his existence—and a mother who refuses to accept his identity—he must fight for the life he knows he deserves. The play’s themes of queer visibility, parental acceptance, heartbreak, and resilience continue to strike a deep chord with audiences today.
A legend of the American stage, Harvey Fierstein is a four-time Tony Award winner—two for the original Torch Song Trilogy (Best Play, Best Actor), one for La Cage aux Folles, and one for Hairspray. A trailblazer in queer representation, his other writing credits include Kinky Boots, Newsies, Casa Valentina, and A Catered Affair. His acting credits span Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles) and film (Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day), and he is an outspoken activist and essayist. Torch Song solidified his legacy as a fearless voice for LGBTQ+ stories onstage.
“Bringing Torch Song to Wilton Manors—one of the most vibrant queer communities in the country—feels incredibly meaningful,” says director Ronnie Larsen. “This play has heart, bite, and truth, and I’m so proud of the incredible team bringing it to life.”
