Canada’s Corno Presents Her Debut South Florida Gallery Exhibition During Art Basel Miami 12/4/15

Canada’s Corno Presents Her Debut South Florida Gallery Exhibition During Art Basel Miami
CORNO with ArtworkFriday, December 4th, 7:30pm
Markowicz Fine Art Gallery
110 NE 40th Street
Miami, FL 33137

The highly acclaimed queen of Canada’s art world and one of North America’s female royalty in artistic expression, Corno, will be presenting her first exhibition in Miami as one of the city’s headlining female artists during this year’s Art Basel. Joanne will make her very first career appearance during the international art world’s most prestigious week, celebrated throughout the City of Miami and Miami Beach, December 3—6.

The opening preview night of the Corno Exhibition, presented by Corno Studio and hosted by Miami’s preeminent fund manager, Simon Librati of 212 Investment Fund LP, will take place on Friday, December 4th, starting at 7:30pm, at the renowned Markowicz Fine Art Gallery in Miami’s Design District, with an illustrious VIP attendance anticipated in honor of the Quebec-born artist who currently resides in New York. The self-titled gallery exhibit will feature a broad selection of Corno’s work that exemplifies her neo-expressionist approach – harmonizing abstract with figurative, using bold textures, movement and colors that encompasses her signature style. Corno’s inaugural Miami exhibition will be at the Markowicz Gallery for the entire month of December.

“I am delighted to be presenting my very first exhibition in Miami during this year’s Art Basel,” says Corno. “I’m aware that some of the world’s greatest talent from all four corners of the globe converge in South Florida during this time of the year, and I am excited to be part of such a prestigious week. I have dedicated the summer to creating some of my most interesting work that I am bringing down to Miami for the exhibit, and I look forward to sharing my latest collections with everyone. I am privileged to be presenting my work at the Markowicz Gallery – which is such an esteemed name to be associated with.”

A diverse selection from Corno’s own hand-picked compilation will be on display at the Markowicz Gallery, ranging from acrylic on canvas pieces in her recent collection of Faces to mixed media on canvas artwork for her extensive collection of popular Portraits depicting Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol. Her alternative anthology of Nudes and Drawings, developed with acrylic on paper, demonstrates the long history of talent and diversity that Corno has sustained throughout her career as a leading pop artist over the last thirty years.

Corno has successfully mastered her technique to the point where her style is immediately recognizable. Getting to the essence of Corno`s artistic inquiry are her acrylics on paper. These drawings clearly demonstrate the artist`s abstract and figurative strengths while exuding a raw pure energy that perpetually moves throughout each work. Every line, shape and color can be perceived in all its precision and spontaneity, leaving little room for error. These drawings reflect a refined talent, blending Corno`s creative flow and technical strengths. With each confident brushstroke, she leaves a permanent imprint on the paper.

Corno paints faces to catch the emotions they hide. Playing on bold facial expressions, dramatic colors choices and highly gestural abstract elements, she infuses her work with dynamic energy. A painting by Corno is like a zoom in on powerful feelings. With trademark large formats, she paints huge artworks that can be both overpowering and utterly seductive: faces larger than life. From her smallest details to her large sweeping brush strokes, her art works catch viewers off guard and invite them on a breathtaking inner journey.

Made in New York, Corno’s giclées are printed in limited number on 100% cotton, museum-quality paper. The velvet-like characteristics of this surface ensures the highest quality rendering and lifelong duration of each print. They are individually examined, numbered and signed by Corno. She is very selective in choosing the paintings to be reproduced into giclées as only a small handful are selected. She also chooses the formats and edition sizes. Certificates of Authenticity are included with each Corno giclée.

All proceeds will support more than 3,500 young entrepreneurs throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Eats & Beats 2015

Eats N Beats 2015 30

After an unplanned tour of Little Haiti in Miami last night, my wife and I gave in to technology and plugged in the address of The Moore Building in Miami’s Design District into the phone. After all, we didn’t want to be late to the second annual Eats & Beats culinary and musical event taking place from 7:30 until midnight!

Whew! Just made it on time, and someone was nice enough to leave a parking space right in front of the building for us. We met the organizers on the way in and then got started tasting some great dishes, sampling some terrific spirits and cocktails, and being entertained with some great music and ambiance.

The pink lights flashing on the very unique architecture of The Moore Building made me feel like I was back at a club in Paris I visited a few times in the 90’s. Eats & Beats took place on all 4 floors, which each have a 360 degree balcony overlooking the center of the building. Pretty cool!

Eats N Beats 2015 8

We met some very nice people, both vendors and other guests alike. If I were forced to pick some favorites, I’d have to choose Chef Adrianne Calvo (who also made a spectacular dessert at the Five Cubed event a few days ago), the food from Segundo Muelle Peruvian Restaurant, Red The Steakhouse, Brother Jimmy’s, and Havana 1957. Oh, and the cupcakes from Ana Paz Cakes and Slice of Art!

And on the spirits side of things, I loved the Zafra rum, both on the rocks and as a cocktail. Not to be outdone were the terrific mojitos that the folks from Nikki Beach were making. Not only did both of those vendors make a great tasting drink, but they went all out with their presentation and overall experience.

Eats N Beats 2015 35

IT Espresso Lounge also made a very nice prosecco based drink, quite refreshing. And as the “beer guy,” I have to give a shout out to the only beer vendor there–Modelo! I personally would have like to have seen a few more strong brands, especially considering the emergence of craft beer on the Miami scene. But hey, that’s probably just me.

All the vendors were friendly, knowledgeable, and wanted to share their products with you. And to the army of people that made the event happen, congratulations! Can’t wait for Eats & Beats 2016!

Eats N Beats, the hugely successful food and spirits event is back again during Miami Food & Wine Week! The first annual Eats N Beats welcomed over 3,500 foodies who were looking to experience an event that was equal parts food, spirits, and music with just the right amount of Miami flare!

Eats N Beats was created as a way to bring Miami Food & Wine week back to the South Floridian. Dubbed the “by locals for locals” event by numerous publications, Eats N Beats welcomed scores of event guests who sampled over 40 of Miami’s best eateries and dozens of wine and spirits. Food coupled with amazing music by some of Miami’s best bands and DJ talents along with nightlife inspired production made this event, uniquely Miami.

Last year Eats N Beats proudly showcased a stellar line up that included: Red Steakhouse, Meat Market, Petit Pois, Steve Haas’s City Hall Restaurant, Nikki Beach, Bongos Cuban Café, Larios on the Beach, Pride & Joy BBQ, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Alma Mexicana, The Passion Group-(Dolores, but you can call me Lolita, Crazy About You, and Love is Blind), Celebrity Chef Ralph Pagano’s Unnamed Mexican Restaurant, Sake Room Express, The Rusty Pelican, RA Sushi, Certified Steaks & Seafood, Lemoni Pizzeria, Imperia Restaurant & Lounge, Juana M Brickell, and Epicure Gourmet Market & Café. Not to worry, keeping true to our City known for beauty and some flash, the event will touch on all of the senses. Complete with dynamic production, local VIPS and Celebs Eats N Beats will also be outfitted with the comforts one has come to expect from an event in Miami. The showcase will attract those looking for an alternative type of food event, one that brings the best of three worlds: food, music and wines/spirits together seamlessly.

The Revivalists

The septet has been playing nonstop since 2007, crafting a genre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes the divergent backgrounds of its individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of the band’s New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with an exotic accent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down.

The California Honeydrops

The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their live shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world: on their nine European tours, to featured slots at such premiere festivals as Monterey Jazz, High Sierra, and Outside Lands, and performances in 2013 supporting B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing.

JUke

Hailing from Miami, JUke is a new breed of Post-blues and the brainchild of singer/songwriter/harmonica whiz, Eric Garcia, who was dissatisfied with most dated, non-threatening traditional blues. Eric felt the need to bring the angst and power back into the type of music that seemed to lose some of it’s relevance and impact.

Teaming up with guitar phenom and singer, Evan Lamb, was the catapult that made JUke go and realize Eric’s vision.

The addition of powerhouse drummer, Brian Lange, and the endless grooves from bassist, Taylor Byrd, have completed the unique hybrid that has become JUke.

Nipsey Hussle

You already know what it is. From the way he greets you, to the words that he speaks. The uniform he wears is bold, aggressive and absolutely intimidating. He’s authentic – the offspring of the West Coast’s most celebrated talent – yet and still a novelty all his own. In an industry that’s fallen victim to bubble gum lyrics and erroneous dance fads to match, he’s the spokesperson the block wants for. He’s the sociopolitical outrage of Ice Cube and N.W.A. He’s Snoop Dogg before you knew his name and Ice T after an unexpected knock at 6 o’clock in the morning. He’s the very definition of Slauson & Crenshaw – a self-inspired movement and a name you can trust. He is Nipsey Hussle.

Cost: RSVP to facundorum@hs-pr.com to attend the “24 Hours in Mexico” Photo Exhibition. Limited availability, guests must RSVP to attend the public exhibition on Saturday, November 22nd.

Following a whirlwind 24-hour trip to Mexico, photographer Seth Browarnik has curated an original series of images of the FACUNDO Rum Collection, the first luxury collection of sipping rums from BACARDÍ, to form a stunning 30+ photography exhibit bringing the “art of rum” to life. These photographs tell the story of not only the meticulous production process of hand bottling the FACUNDO Rum Collection, a product sourced from the Bacardi family’s Private Reserves, but of the community, the heritage, and artistry one finds along the way.

Accompanied by BACARDÍ Brand Master David Cid, Browarnik traveled to Tultitlán, the BACARDÍ aging & blending facility where FACUNDO is bottled. They also stayed in La Galarza, a historic BACARDÍ distillery that showcases the rum company’s commitment to heritage and the legacy of founder Don Facundo Bacardi Massó. During the trip, Browarnik discovered what’s really behind the rum barrel: the people, the history, and the passion that is involved in the art of rum-making.

Open to the public for one day only in the Miami Design District, guests can experience the intimate journey Browarnik captured firsthand. Guests will also be able to experience the four variants from the FACUNDO Rum Collection neat or on the rocks as they view the photographs and relive the story as told though the exhibit.

Photographs of Swamptoberfest and People’s Choice Award on 10/22/14

Swamptoberfest and People’s Choice Award at Swampspace Gallery on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

The director of Swampspace, Oliver Sanchez announced the nomination of the gallery by the Knight Foundation to their People’s Choice Award, South Florida. The announcement is a welcomed recognition for the maverick artist run project space located in the Miami Design District for nearly a decade.

Swampspace was founded on the premise that promoting artistic values increases civility among diverse groups that make up our greater community. It presents monthly exhibitions ranging from visual arts and sculpture to theatrical performance and musical interludes. With nearly fifty exhibitions and critical acclaim, Swampspace is now recognized to be a place both sophisticated enough for arbiters of taste and unvarnished enough for the iconoclast.

The People’s Choice Award highlights small arts groups making a difference in South Florida. It’s part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest funding the best ideas for the arts. Winners of both the challenge and People’s Choice will be announced in December.

As a way to shine the spotlight on smaller groups, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is asking the public to vote by text for their favorite of the six nominees to determine the People’s Choice winner. To vote, the public can text the nominees individual code to 22333 in the U.S. or 747-444-3548 toll-free, through 11:59 p.m. Monday Nov. 17. The effort is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, which funds projects that bring South Florida together through the arts.

The Knight Arts Challenge is a South Florida-based initiative to draw the best and most innovative ideas out of local organizations and individuals seeking to transform the community through the arts. If you have a great idea in the arts, let us know. Take part in a community rising to new levels of artistic achievement and global recognition. In the last six years, 193 ideas were funded. Is this your year?

Matt will provide tips on how to craft your applications, the challenge timeline and review process, and answer just about any question you have. Representatives from Gehl Architecture will also attend to discuss ways to build more successful cities. Gehl Architecture is a global leader in rethinking spaces between city buildings; the firm has led acclaimed projects including the creation of bike paths and urban parks throughout New York City, and the redesign of New York’s Times Square.

Ed Motta long-ago established himself as a force in the world of Brazilian pop, soul and funk. His latest set AOR, released in 2013 by Lab 344, proves he is still vital within the realm of Musica Popular Brasileira and The Stage Miami is set to host him along with Batuke Samba Funk and DJ Fabio Soul on Thursday, August 7, 2014. General admission tickets are $25 in advance (available online at bit.ly/EdMotta080714), $35 on the day of show.

“We have been trying to bring Ed Motta to The Stage for quite some time now and we are excited about the opportunity to showcase him and his amazing live band” says Johann Torres, The Stage’s talent buyer and CEO of DNA Entertainment, one of the night’s presenting sponsors. “We feel that pairing him with one of our favorite local acts in Batuke Samba Funk is ideal and look forward to a special evening of Afro-Samba, Brazilian pop and soul.” The evening will also feature sets by DJ Fabio Soul, the evening’s other presenting sponsor.

Singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and producer Motta scored early with the Brazilian soul/funk hits “Manuel”, “Vamos dançar”, “Baixo Rio” and “Um love” from his 1989 WEA Latina self-titled group debut Conexão Japeri. Subsequently, he embarked on a solo career, releasing 10 studio recordings to date, highlighted by 1993’s Entre e Ouça , Manual Pratico Para Festas Bailes e Afins, Vol.1 (1997), 2003’s Poptical and 2009’s Piquenique, plus a live album Ao Vivo (1993). AOR represents Motta’s most intricate work yet, featuring contributions from guitarists Chico Pinheiro and David T. Walker plus lyrics from Chico Amaral, Adriana Calcanhotto, Rita Lee, Dante Spinetta and wife Edna Lopes.

Batuke Samba Funk are a bilingual (Portuguese / English), high-energy Brazilian band that mixes rhythms such as funk from the 70’s with Afro-Samba, Brazilian big band, Batucada, soul and R&B. Formed in Miami in 2008 by bassist, composer, producer and Rio de Janeiro native Diogo Brown, the sextet also features guitarist Cezar Santana and is often augmented by a three-piece horn section. The goal of Batuke is to “Brazilianize” American sounds and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfect balanced fusion. The band is currently promoting its latest single “Mas Que Moça Bonita,” a smooth Brazilian pop number that sounds like a modern-day take on Sergio Mendes Brasil 66.

On view May 3-June 14, 2014
Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm

Exhaustion is the debut exhibition by 2J, a new collaborative venture between sculptor Justin Beal and painter Jesse Willenbring. Building on Beal’s background as an architect and Willenbring’s background as a graphic designer, 2J is a hybridized approach to object-making based on refined geometries and extreme surface treatments. Images culled from both artists’ archives of source material are printed and painted directly on glass with varying degrees of transparency and arranged in space like so many layers of a photoshop files rendered at an architecturalscale. Treating images with a sculptural sensibility, 2J produces furniture, objects and installations that collapse the boundary between surface and support and undermine the conventional binaries of repression and expression that so often divide the realms of design and art.

Exhaustion is a site-specific installation designed to address both Locust Project’s interior architecture and its location at the center of Miami’s Design District. The exhibition includes tables and walls made from steel and glass and layered with imagery from a variety of sources, including Marco Zanini’s designs for Memphis Milano, pre-digital print advertisements for Hilti Tools, Geoffrey Beene and Herman Miller and scans from Egon von Furstenberg’s seminal book Decorating for Men: The Power Look at Home. The tables and walls throughout the gallery support a series of vertical and horizontal glass planes that divide the space into layers of superimposed and overlapping imagery. Each glass panel is printed with a directto-substrate digital printing method more commonly associated with commercial signage and advertising. The images in the exhibition, many of which have previously appeared both in print and in Willenbring and Beal’s work, have been recycled, repeated and manipulated to the point of exhaustion and then redeployed as part of 2J’s visual language. As a final gesture, a selection of works by Beal and Willenbring will hang on and amidst the walls.

Justin Beal received a BA in Architecture from Yale and an MFA from the University of Southern California. He also attended the Whitney Independent Studio Program. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Bortolami and ACME Los Angeles and LA>

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro Presents Rosa Rosae Event 5/17/14

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro Presents Rosa Rosae Event
Invitation for May 16- for ScreenOpening May 17, 2014
Invitation Only May 16, 2014
Galleria Ca’ d’Oro
4141 NE Second Ave, Suite 105F
Miami Design District.

Rosa Rosae an exhibition showcasing the exceptional works by talented artists Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco begins Saturday, May 17th.

An invitation only reception for an advance viewing of the exhibition will be held on Friday evening, May 16th. It is being held during Fashion Week in Miami, a moment where both art and fashion cross over in one of Miami’s most creative and exciting times of the year.

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro is honored to announce an exhibition showcasing the exceptional works by talented artists Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco. Curated by Gloria Porcella, director and owner of the famous Roman and Miami Galleries and entitled Rosa Rosae, it is designed to bring to Miami the artistic flavor of these unique European artists.

The exhibition, beginning Saturday, May 17 and running for three weeks, will be held at the newly opened space of Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, Suite 105F, 4141 NE Second Avenue in Miami’s Design District. The Galleria’s goal is to grow together with the most talented emerging European artists by bringing quality, design and innovation to South Florida. Very different from each other in terms of style, medium, personalities and artistic orientations, Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco are united in this show through the theme of roses; a subject matter portrayed by both artists in one of their main works, which gave name to the exhibition, Rosa Rosae.

Ludmilla Radchenko, a young female Siberian Pop artist has the ability to blend unique and sometimes startling photographs with aspects of digital collage and lively acrylic painting to create an entirely unique art form. In the classic Pop Art style, Radchenko presents her subjects over and over, loading it with social content in order to expand and at times exploit its meaning. The bright colors and broad lines that appear as she applies paint to the digital prints serve to create new levels of meaning and also add emotive elements to the overall effect. The results are paintings that reverberate with numerous meanings meant to connect with the viewer.

Vittorio Sacco always had a great passion for photography. The artist’s work truly embodies an Italian essence that expresses a passion for food, a keen eye for simple beauty, style and design. While in New York he joined Bianchi Films where he was able to combine the graphic beauty of his still photography with the elegance of motion pictures. Throughout his career the artist has worked for many important advertising campaigns such as Lindt, Barilla and Kraft among others. Vittorio Sacco is one of those artists who make food and simple objects into poetry. They evoke in the spectator a sense of tangibility and desire to reach what is portrayed. The artist has the ability to transform simple and common everyday objects into appealing, luxurious and sensual elements, which stimulate our senses. On the other hand, his black and white photos of places are somewhat supernatural, where he immortalizes empty spaces where presence is perceived among the ruins. Primitive and yet modern they seem to evoke a post-apocalyptic scene.

Since 1970, Galleria Ca’ d’Oro (House of Gold), located near Piazza di Spagna, one of Rome’s most iconic and prestigious destinations has been renown as one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Italy representing famous figures in the art world such as Dali, de Chirico, and Filippo de Pisis. In 2010 the Gallery opened its doors in Miami. During Art Week and Art Basel Miami Galleria Ca’ d’Oro made its mark in Miami with the most talked about public art installations, the Regeneration Art Project, the exhibition of the famous Pink snails and during Art Basel Miami 2012, with the FOReverglades project. In 2013 the Galleria participated in distinguished Art Fairs such as Context-Art Miami, Scope New York and Art Wynwood Miami. The same year the gallery successfully reintroduced 8 Giant Red Snails in Central Park and Columbus Circle in New York City. The installation’s popularity demonstrated once again the international prestige and acclaim of the gallery in the US.

Today with its new location in the Miami Design District Galleria Ca’ d’Oro lead by Owner and Director Gloria Porcella continues to bring its experience and expertise to the US promoting Italian and European contemporary art with passion and enthusiasm. Galleria Ca’ d’Oro offers not only some of the most important works by artists of the 20th, and 21st centuries, but also offers personalized art advisory, the implementation of public art installations and museum quality exhibitions. Among the artists represented are Giorgio de Chirico’s Sculptures, Salvador Dali’s sculptures, Alfredo Rapetti Mogol and the famous Cracking Art Group animals by William Sweetlove, Renzo Nucara, Federico Comelli Ferrari and Ivan Lardshneider.

“Through the Lens” – 60th Anniversary Alumni Artist Series: Exhibit 3

Carl Juste, ACND alumnus ’81, will present a retrospective of his work documenting the course of his 25 year career as photojournalist for the Miami Herald and past exhibits at ACND including: “Cachao” 2007; “Havana & Haiti” 2008; and “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered.”

Under threat of persecution, Haitian-born Carl Phillipe Juste (ACND alumnus 1981), fled with his family from Haiti in 1965. Settling in Miami’s Haitian community, Juste flourished academically and won a scholarship to the University of Miami. Although he intended to be an engineer, he could not ignore the photographic inner voice that had spoken to him since childhood. Responding to a clear relationship he shared with the visual world, Juste vigorously pursued photojournalism and since 1991, has served his community through his work at the Miami Herald. He has received numerous awards for his work from Picture of the Year, Pulitzer Prize, Society for News Design, Best of Photojournalism, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. Juste is founder of both the IPC Visual Lab and Iris Photo Collective.

Juste has exhibited his own work and of his students from IPC Visual Lab many times at the ACND Gallery, and has exhibited at both solo and group shows at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Little Haiti Cultural Center, and other galleries throughout South Florida.

The hour-long PBS documentary, “Miami Boheme: An American Musical Journey” will be shown at a special event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19 at The Stage, 170 NE 38th St, in Miami’s Design District. Following the screening will be a live performance by PALO!, featuring special musical guests from the film. Andrew Yeomanson (DJ LeSpam) will be spinning rare vinyl throughout the night. Complimentary appetizers by THIS IS IT Food Truck.

“Miami Boheme,” directed by Joe Cardona and Ralf Gonzalez, is a documentary about Miami’s original Latin-fusion bands and the cutting-edge scene surrounding them. The film takes you to the clubs, where the beats of bands such as Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Suénalo, PALO!, Elastic Bond and Afrobeta get you dancing.

The film is a bilingual mashup of rhythms and cultures. It is a one-hour jam session like no other: a fusion of sights, sounds and ideas that meld together to form the fabric of America’s most dynamic city, Miami.

Photographs of Eats and Beats

Eats & Beats was the answer to the out of control prices and ostentatiousness that the Sobe Wine and Food Festival has become. The event was created to give locals a place to eat great food and hear awesome music for an affordable and reasonable price. Congratulations on a kickass party Eats and Beats, see you next year.

Locust Projects is pleased to present Inholdings, an exhibition of new work by Miamibased artist Christy Gast. The two works in this exhibition, a full-scale textile replica of a Nike Hercules missile and a single-channel video entitled War Drums (Nuclear Clock), refer to the Hole-in-the-Donut region of the Everglades. The works in Inholdingsshift the focus between natural, cultural and desired histories by appropriating craft traditions to document a place.

CG2_War Drums Production Still 2014The missile sculpture, Gast’s largest textile work to date, is suspended in the main gallery as if stored in a hangar awaiting activation. It is constructed from botanical textile designed and printed by the artist, which overlays images of tomato bushes, Brazilian pepper trees and lovegrass. Remnants of agriculture, invasive species and native flora compete for surface space and reference particular moments of conflict in the landscape.

The single channel video installation War Drumswas shot in one of the few existing stands of pine forest in Dade County. The camera pans the horizon in a continuous circle once per minute, moving like the second hand of a clock. At 12 o’clock the camera passes a woman playing traditional Afro Cuban rhythms on a conga. At 6 o’clock, the camera pans another drummer playing snare cadences, military drumcorps style. Embodying the cultural conflicts of the Cold War, the drummers pass beats between themselves as the listen deeply to, and interpret, the sounds of the forest.

Hole-in-the-Donut, the site Gast examines for Inholdings, is marked by invasions and colonizations, both ecological and geopolitical. It is a deforested pine rockland in the Everglades that was plowed for tomato fields in the early 1900’s. A HM69 Nike Missile base located there housed three nuclear warheads and was on high alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The base closed in 1979; the farms foreclosed decades earlier. Brazilian pepper invaded the fallow fields, and eradication required scraping the fields to the fossilized limestone bedrock. Lovegrass is the first native plant to recolonize this moonlike terrain.

Gast’s work stems from extensive research and site visits to places she thinks of as “contested landscapes,” which exhibit evidence of conflict in human desires. She traces, translates or mirrors those conflicts through her art practice.

Virginia Poundstone: BOG—MIA
Locust Projects is pleased to present BOG-MIA, a new installation by New York-based sculptor Virginia Poundstone, known for her exquisitely crafted sculptures that examine the art historical, scientific and economic significance of flowers. The works in this exhibition take their material and formal cues from the logistical machinations of the cut flower industry in Colombia. Miami is the main point of entry for the products of this industry: retail bouquets containing carnations, roses and baby’s breath, which enter Poundstone’s practice as artifacts of a vast industrial system producing the aesthetics of popular emotion.

At Locust Projects, Poundstone describes this vast nature-transforming system through her first video installation, which she likens to a landscape painting. The impressionistic sequences, shot in fields, greenhouses and shipping facilities, set the ambiance for a series of new sculptural works consisting of printed screens, aluminum panels and eternalized flowers. The sculptures are supported by platforms made of brightly printed cardboard shipping boxes scavenged from the importer’s warehouse near Miami International Airport.

Project Room: Alan Gutierrez, Nobody knows me better than you
Locust Projects is pleased to present Nobody knows me better than you, an exhibition by Miami-based artist Alan Gutierrez. Centered around a series of paintings, the exhibition utilizes a suite of theatrical production equipment as an arbitrary means to reframe the exhibition space as a site of production. Throughout the course of the exhibition, the artist will change the installation into different iterations, embracing process and the malleable nature of rehearsal.

They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words, in which case ‘i-Miami 2013,’ Marc Schmidt’s debut photography exhibition, speaks volumes. Reminiscent of Walker, Vishniac, Atget, Lange and Arbus, Marc Schmidt’s photography is strong and thought-provoking, reflecting the zeitgeist of the postmodern World. Using the simplest of tools, his iPhone camera and his bicycle for transportation, Schmidt has created a poignant visual essay of the inner city and its denizens. Schmidt’s affinity and respect for his subject matter are evident in the narrative structure of his compositions and the intuitive poetic resonance of his imagery.

Marc Schmidt was born in Chicago and raised in Hamburg. A physician by profession, Schmidt has had a love affair with the art of photography since his teen years when he started documenting street scenes in Hamburg. Schmidt has traveled around the world capturing life in all its aspects for over a decade and has previously published his work only once; a photography essay on a refugee camp in Ruanda. He has been running a successful photo rental studio in Hamburg since 2001. In 2013 he opened CU-1 Gallery in downtown Miami and has been documenting Miami street life since April of the same year.

Exhibition runs 1 -  21st December.

‘Art Britannia’ explores contemporary practice from UK with an emphasis on painting and craft. The exhibition features a ‘mini show within a show’, taken directly from The Lion and Lamb Gallery’s ‘Summer Saloon’ exhibition. The Lion and Lamb is an artists run space, located in the back of an East End pub.

Art Britannia artists include: Charlie Billingham, James Capper, Gordon Cheung, Freya Douglas-Morris, Brad Grievson, Sam Jury, Hannah Knox, Mary Ramsden, John Robertson, Guy Rusha, Dolly Thompsett, Rebecca Ackroyd, Eleanor Moreton, Henny Acloque and Grant Foster.

Curated by Ben Austin (London) and produced by Karelle Levy (Miami).
This show is made possible with the support of Miami Design District, Dacra, Hendrick’s Gin, The British Shop, The British American Business Council, Artlyst, Llanllyr Source, HSBC, Fluff PR, and KRELwear.

British art has always had a distinctive quality perhaps stemming from the mix of post-Empire eclecticism with a touch of eccentricity.

The British are well known for having an idiosyncratic penchant for experimentation and exploration. In art throughout the 20th Century the British have constantly pushed boundaries be it with the advent of Modernism through to the beginnings of Pop, with artists like Richard Hamilton, David Hockney and Sir Peter Blake before the genre took off to New York with Warhol and Co.  This set up a cultural dialogue between the old and new worlds, which still exists today.

By the 70’s and 80’s British artists continued be progressive and taboo breaking with the likes of Gilbert and George becoming ‘living sculptures’ and are now considered ‘national treasures’.  By the 90’s a new wave of artists appear on the scene, graduates from Goldsmiths with plenty of attitude and with the backing of the Charles Saatchi become universally known as the yBas (Young British Artists). Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas grabbed headlines with art that shocked and amazed in equal measure. Pickled sharks and unmade beds surrounded by detritus created a new visual language laced with Post-Modern motifs. This art was bursting with bravado and possessed a visceral quality that demanded attention.

Twenty-five years on, ‘Art Britannia’ takes a rather different view. This is an exhibition that proudly celebrates craft, technical skill, mark making and gestures.  An art with an alternative aesthetic, where the process is critical to the practice, be it through the act of painting or through considered constructions.

‘Art Britannia’ has no over arching theme, no curatorial dictate, merely a commitment to work that reflects a subtle yet seismic shift in British contemporary practice.  Here we have bold and elemental abstractions, richly saturated landscapes, nude figure painting, romantic visions, unsettling video work and a mechanical construct.

The group is a healthy mix of slightly older, more established artists together with the next generation of recent graduates who are already appearing in important collections and shows.

Zones Art Fair is wired to the cultural rhythm of Miami through its ten years of work with the artistic community as an activator in the cultural scene of this city presenting the best-unrepresented artists through their unique and exciting programs. We seek to make non-represented artists visible to collectors and curators. This year’s Zones will merge the fair concept with performance festival to create a niche performance based fair that includes live performances, exhibitions, video screening, talks and music.

Zones’ focus is on making the work of up-and-coming artists more accessible to the public. This year’s edition crosses multiple creative disciplines to offer a daily exciting program of live action performances by international artists under the title PERFORMIA1. PERFORMIA1 is the first edition of a performance festival, which seeks to introduce performance art to the art fair platform. PERFORMIA 1’s aim is to inform viewers of the potential capacities of performance art today. The fair offers visitors a detour from the labyrinthine art-fair set-up. One can encounter anything from sculpture, video screenings and paintings to performance pieces, all in a casual atmosphere. Zones’ new location at the Design District, across from Locust Projects and close to the De La Cruz Collection allows for viewers to explore an exciting and creative area of Miami.

SexEd 12/4/13-12/8/13

SexEd
Wednesday, December 4 – Sunday, December 8th
dash_snow_lehmann_06Always Flowers
60 NE 39th Street
Miami, FL
Up In Arms

Curated by Adarsha Benjamin, SexEd is an alternative, satellite air fair housed in the abandoned walls of Always Flowers, which could be described as an unconventional and up-cycled gallery space with myriad opportunities. Through live performance, sculpture, sound, installation and visual art, a collective of boundary pushing artists will create a plural-sensory experience that challenges the history, definition, and relevance of Sexual Education.

Artists Petra Collins, Adarsha Benjamin, Ryan Heffington, James Georgopoulos, Amanda Charchian, Dugan O’Neal, Lola Rose Thompson, Alia Penner, Gregory Siff, Guy Blakeslee, Cole Sternberg, Future Eyes, and others TBA will use various mediums to explore the theme of ‘sexual education’ – ideas about censorship, the internet, sexual identity, and the future of sex in America provide fodder for this group of young, emerging and established artists. Through performances, lectures, site specific installation and various participatory events, Sex Ed will be a forum for novel discussions about the past, present, and future of sex, in all its multifarious possibilities and expressions in the 21st century.

SexEd attempts to address the nuances of a sexual education – from the classroom, to the bedroom, in different cultures and eras, the lesson of sex is unavoidable. It takes sexual education out of the academic context and into an aesthetic and spiritual context where the erotic heart beats like a mythical tom tom during a humid miami night.

Curated by Juli Capella, this exhibition sets out to show how design and food have always been interrelated and how the discipline of design has sought solutions to the problems posed by the world of cuisine.

TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food takes a look at how Spanish culture has come up with ingenious inventions and solutions in this respect throughout its history, playing a prominent role at all times. This association, in addition to bearing fruit from a functional viewpoint, has been equally productive in the world of art, which has drawn inspiration from food to create interesting pieces that range from artistic installations to anthropological discourse.

What is the role design has played in relation to food and cuisine in Spain? The exhibition Tapas. Spanish Design for Food, organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), shows through two hundred or so design objects divided into four sections—Kitchen, Table, Food, and Wine—how design, tradition, cuisine, science, the latest trends, art, and innovation have contributed to establishing food habits.

Spain brings together design, creativity and cuisine as characteristic values. In both raw materials and their preparation, in the theoretical field and in inspired designs, Spain’s food culture crosses boundaries and competes at the highest level worldwide.

Spanish designers, chefs, companies and institutions contribute daily to shaping this culture, which unarguably constitutes a highly valuable intangible asset.

Alessandra Gold Concept Store
3326 North Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33127

Miami’s own Alessandra Gold Concept Store (AGCS), and its resident sneaker label KruZin, will celebrate Art Basel Miami 2013 by hosting the launch of a sneaker collection honoring the coming Chinese Year of the Horse, and featuring international artist collaborations forged especially for this Basel Miami event. KruZin’s CEO, Ming Wei-Shih, will travel from the company’s Taipei headquarters to officiate the launch.

On Wednesday December 4th, 2013 AGCS will host an invite-only press and VIP viewing and artist meet-and-greet event, opening at 5:00PM for press, and at 6:30PM for other invited guests. Co-hosting the event with Alessandra Gold (KruZin Creative Director) is CEO, Author and TV personality, Tomi Rose (as seen on “Hot Listings Miami”).

Event attendees will witness the transformation of the AGCS space (inside and out) into art in its own right with a full-scale installation created by Gilberto Mendes, CEO and Art Director for famed Brazilian event-as-art company, “Perverts” (http://www.perverts.com.br).

Featured Artists:
· Yuri Tuma: born in Sao Paulo (Brazil), and living and working in Miami. Tuma’s art centers around photography, but he is a frequent collaborator in other media including video, sculpture, fashion and installation art. His art involves transformation of photograph images into formulaic patterns creating optical art pieces unusual to the field of photography (http://www.yurituma.com/).
· Malcolm Stuart: working and living in LA, Malcolm is at the forefront of contemporary airbrush art and is well known for his custom hand air brushed art and painting onto apparel, adopted by artist mavens such as Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and the emerging fashion house JoyRich (http://malcolmstuart.com/).
· Kamikvze – by James Velez: born and raised in Miami, James is an emergent multi-dimensional artist exhibiting superb skills in drawing and painting. Collaborations minted in this young artist’s career include Martellus Bennett, IMKING.CO and Coin$lot (http://instagram.com/kamikvze#).
· Guava de Artist was born and raised in Antigua and Barbuda. He works out of Takamatsu (Japan) and Miami. He is a self-taught graphic cartoonist that uses various materials (wood, vinyl, metal, acrylic paint, etc) to create art pieces on apparel, footwear walls, and canvases (https://www.facebook.com/guavadeartist).

“Miami is becoming a culture melting pot where some of the world’s most cutting edge international cultural events happen, Art Basel, Winter Music Conference, ULTRA, Miami International Fashion Week and Swim Week, bring people worldwide to Miami for a world-class experience. It is important for me as a Miami transplant, to rise with Miami’s star. In just two short years of creating AGCS in Miami, it has managed to become an international bridge between art and fashion. That is why this year, we felt it made sense to create clothes and shoes that celebrate what Basel means to art worldwide,” said creative director and principal, Alessandra Gold, when asked about the genesis of the Basel events and collection.

AGCS will also host three open-to-the public events on Friday December 6th, Saturday December 7th and the wrap party on Sunday December 8th. The art of Brazilian painter Fernando De Oliveira will also be displayed in the Gold Photography Studio as an appendix – additional exclusive Basel exhibit.

Now celebrating its 15th year presenting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to announce artist Angel Otero has been commissioned to create a work for Art on the Move, part of Locust Projects’ ongoing public commissions initiative. The New York based Puerto Rican artist embeds personal history in his densely stratified abstract paintings. Otero’s investigational process begins with thickly layered compositions painted on large planes of glass. These “oil skins” are then scraped off in sheets and draped onto canvas, revealing layers of under painting and distorting the original image. Otero’s artwork will appear on the backs of Miami Beach buses and at Miami Metro Rail stops in December 2013.
Art on the Move features specially commissioned artists’ projects in public spaces around Miami. Through this effort, new work by artists such as Nicole Eisenman, Agustina Woodgate and Liam Gillick has appeared on billboards, bus shelters and bus backs throughout the county.

The dust and debris, delays, and detours that are everyday annoyances for people en route to work on South Florida’s highways are seen quite differently by Silvia Lizama, Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Professor of Photography at Barry University. Equipped with a white hard hat, camera in hand, and an artistic vision, Lizama has created a series of photographs that challenges our perception and turns what we associate as stressful into something serene. She invites the viewer to: “take a moment to really look around — to see what’s in front of us; to see what’s in the shadows; to see the special places.”

This show is the second photography exhibit presented by the school, as part of its 60th Anniversary Alumni Artist Series titled, Through the Lens. Lizama graduated from Notre Dame Academy (the girls’ high school before it merged to become Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) in 1975.

The photos will remain on view through January 24, 2014 with additional gallery hours offered during Art Basel Miami Beach and Miami Art Week 2013. Regular gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Other hours are available by appointment by calling 305.751.8367 or emailing news@acnd.net. The exhibit is free.

“The environment Silvia creates is one of contradictions: destruction and recreation; past and future; monumental stateliness and ugly ruin; life and death,” comments Tracie Heller, exhibit curator and Assistant Professor of Photography at Barry University. “The absence of people and plant life, and the monumentality of the man-made structures, add an air of abandonment, like that of an ancient ruin.”

Earlier construction site images were shot in black and white, using a medium format film camera, and then the surfaces of the printed images were hand colored with photographic oils. Images in the latter part of the series are digital and colored using digital manipulation software.

“Tropical sunrises and sunsets add a dimension of reverence and splendor to the work,” adds Heller. “Now working digitally, she has applied her hand coloring sensibilities to the images using digital manipulation software to create the surreal hues of the sky and land.”

Design District 4141
Suite 105F – Ground Floor

Ca’ d’Oro, the gallery that made their grand appearance in 2010 with the iconic larger than life pink snails during Art Basel Miami Beach has recently relocated from Coral Gables to the epicenter of luxury, the 4141 Building in the Design District. In conjunction to Giuseppe Verdi’s Bicentennial and as a celebration, Ca’ d’Oro Gallery will open it’s golden doors on Friday, October 11th, 2013, with a group exhibition Homage to Verdi and offer to Miami a unique one-in-a-lifetime experience with a vibrant live classical music concert by the prestigious Cameristí della Scala of Milan.

“We are very excited to move to the 4141 Building and form part of the renaissance of the Design District. This is Miami’s future as the arts, fashion, and design destination” says Gloria Porcella, co-owner and curator of Ca’ d’Oro Gallery.

Homage to Verdi is a moving and engaging memorialization to one of the most important opera composers in Italian history, Guiseppe Verdi (October 10, 1813–1901). Curated by Gloria Porcella and Lamberto Petrecca, the exhibition highlights the works of 34 contemporary artists- spanning from Romero Britto, the pop artist Leonardo Hidalgo, award winning composer-artist Alfredo Rapetti Mogol, Monica Casali, eco-friendly artist Erika Calesini, Daniela Pasti Augias, Sasha Torrisi, Gloria Sesana, among other members of the artistic Ca’ d’Oro extended family.

The year 2013 is an auspicious time for Italy, for it is also marks “The Year Of Italian Culture in the United States” and in this stellar alignment the Italian Consulate-General in Miami and with the support of Classical South Florida, the grand opening will be accompanied by a live musical performance by the Cameristi della Scala of Milan, who will be seducing the guests with an exclusive program, absolutely unique in the international music world. It contains “Fantasie” from Verdi’s operas, composed in the 19th century by Italian important composers, sometimes Verdi’s friends and coworkers. These pieces, gifts, and celebrations to the greatness of the composer were lying forgotten and without an editor in world libraries. Thanks to the Camersiti della Scala, they are now discovered and played for the first time in our modern times. Viva Verdi!

The live classical performance will take place on the night of the grand opening. The exhibition will be on display until November 20th, 2013.

A collection of photographic images depicting endless tracts of dirt stretching toward horizons set amidst the exquisite drama of tropical skies. Lizama has turned her camera lens to a scene so common the brain has learned to erase it — the omnipresent barren acres of earth awaiting construction of highways, shopping malls, office parks, and subdivisions. Earlier construction site images were shot in black and white, using a medium format film camera, and then the surfaces of the printed images are hand colored with photographic oils. Images in the latter part of the series are digital and Lizama’s hand coloring sensibilities are achieved using digital manipulation software. Curated by Tracie Heller.

Locust Talks: Fairfax Dorn
Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ballroom Marfa, Marfa, TX
Doors open at 6:45pm. Lecture begins promptly at 7pm.

2013 marks Locust Projects’ 15th anniversary as an experimental exhibition space with a mission to serve artists and the community. To mark this milestone we have inaugurated Locust Talks, a new lecture series that brings visiting curators and directors from innovative institutions across the country and internationally. Each art professional will give a public lecture at our gallery space in Miami’s Design District, followed by individual studio visits with local artists. Curators and directors from diverse institutions across the country will talk about topics impacting artists and their communities, fostering a rigorous critical dialogue and deepening Miami’s connection to the contemporary art world.

The program launched in January of 2013 with Anne Pasternak, President and Artistic Director, Creative Time, New York. The second lecture in April featured Lauri Firstenberg, Director and Chief Curator of LAXART, Los Angeles. Locust Talks will continue through 2015 with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Fairfax Dorn is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ballroom Marfa, a non-profit cultural art space dedicated to exploring varied perspectives and issues through the visual arts, film music and performance. Since 2003, Fairfax has been responsible for the artistic and programmatic vision of Ballroom Marfa and developing the future Drive-In. She is also the Co-Founder of the Marfa Dialogues, an inclusive public forum which utilizes art to address the pressing issues of our time. In addition to her directorship of Ballroom Marfa, Fairfax served as Guest Curator and Interim Program Director for the Linda Pace Foundation. Fairfax is currently a board member for Judd Foundation, New York, NY and Marfa, TX; Triple Canopy, Brooklyn, NY; Bunker259, Brooklyn, NY and the Centre Pompidou Foundation, Los Angeles, CA. Prior to Ballroom Marfa, she worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art and Exit Art in New York.  Fairfax along with Virginia Lebermann received ArtTable’s 25th Future Women Leadership Award in April of 2005. She received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Art of Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

Founded in 2003 by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn, Ballroom Marfa is a center for the public exploration of contemporary art and culture. The gallery is housed in a converted dancehall that dates to 1927. Ballroom Marfa is a dynamic, contemporary cultural arts space that provides a lively intellectual environment where varied perspectives and issues are explored through visual arts, film, music, and performance. As an advocate for the freedom of artistic expression, Ballroom Marfa’s mission is to serve international, national, regional, and local arts communities and support the work of both emerging and recognized artists working in all media. Ballroom Marfa is particularly interested in helping artists and curators achieve projects that have significant cultural impact but would be impossible to realize in a traditional gallery or museum setting.

The exhibit runs through October 1, 2013. Guests are encouraged to RSVP for the Opening Reception to galleryofart@acnd.net. The Media and Community are welcome at this FREE event.

“Art transforms our lives by helping us explore the many facets of our abilities, without a worry or fear of making mistakes, or doing something incorrectly,” comments participating artist, Lorie Setton.  “Art helps us realize that there are many avenues to achievement. Each program and event is also designed to promote thought and discussion about the value of the arts in core education.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce the Members-only ticket pre-sale for our annual Smash & Grab Fundraiser. This year’s event will celebrate the organizations’ 15th Anniversary. There are only as many Smash Raffle tickets as artworks, and they always sell-out!

How it works: There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. The event revolves around a raffle, for which over one hundred local, national and international artists have donated artwork — enough so that each raffle ticket is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is a fun way to place artwork into collections, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

Official Press Release

The Related Group Announces Baltus House

Luxury condo project to rise steps from the Design District
More than 50 percent reserved in 30 days

MIAMI (Monday, July 8) – The Related Group, in partnership with Strategic Properties, introduce Baltus House as their latest condo development in Miami, and already are reporting more than 50 percent reserved in 30 days with remarkable pricing from $199,900.

Located at 4250 Biscayne Boulevard on the cusp of the Design District, the 15-story Baltus House will face Biscayne Bay and boast unobstructed water views to the east, overlooking the prestigious Bay Point neighborhood. Looking inside, Baltus House will have a decidedly contemporary Spanish flare.

The project takes its name from Baltus Collection, the high-end, contemporary Spanish furniture company that will design interiors and furnishings for the project. Founded by designer Javier Martin, the brand is known for its clean lines, generous proportions and dynamic materials.

“An exclusive interior design from Baltus Collection will be the perfect complement to the artistic experience the building has to offer,” said Martin. “Baltus House was meticulously designed to bring residents an exquisite living experience in this one-of-a-kind project.”

Jorge Perez, Chairman and CEO of The Related Group, selected the sophisticated and contemporary design house to provide a perfect accompaniment to the elegant curved lines of the building after working with Martin on his own penthouse interiors.

Baltus House features 167 luxury condo units each to be sold with European-design kitchens, stainless steel appliances, carpet and tile flooring.

Residents of the one-, two and three-bedroom units will live steps from the Design District – Miami’s hip neighborhood dedicated to art and design, currently being transformed to be home to the biggest names in fashion design. Shops such as Cartier, Hermes, Prada, and Louis Vuitton have already opened their doors, and many more high-end brands are to come, together with an array of fine dining choices. The bustling neighborhood hosts an array of cultural events including the Art + Design Night on the second Saturday of each month where the focus is on culture, creativity, and fine cuisine. Baltus House residents will enjoy the luxury of also being close to the bustling Midtown area as well as Wynwood art district . And to enjoy the talent of some of the best young artists in the country, residents won’t have to go far as the Frank Gehry designed YoungArts campus is a short walk away. Also located close by are Downtown, Brickell, and Miami Beach.

In continuing with The Related Group’s commitment to integrating art into its buildings, common areas of Baltus House will feature art pieces from Perez’ private collection. Also on display will be artwork by Lluís Barba, a Barcelona artist, who is among Perez’ favorites, and a garage mural by Venezuelan artist Jaime Gili.

Baltus House will boast the finest of modern amenities including a 50-foot pool next to a 400 square foot reflective pool on the seventh floor overlooking Biscayne Bay and Miami Beach, an oversized whirlpool, plush chaises, pool cabanas, and outdoor club seating featuring sofas, chairs, and ottomans. In addition to a rooftop sun deck with two spas will be an outdoor lounge area with a summer kitchen and barbecue grill, all with breathtaking bay views. Baltus House will have a state-of-the-art fitness center with professional-grade cardio machines, weight-training area and a yoga and Pilates area as well as a clubroom.

Groundbreaking is expected September 1, 2013.

Two of South Florida’s premiere musical acts will converge at the Design District venue known for showcasing the area’s best and brightest artists. Humbert and Ketchy Shuby will co-headline the evening after Independence Day, in what promises to be a high-energy night of rock and soul.

Scene veterans Humbert will bring flavorful melodies, Beach Boy-tinged harmonies and relentless rock power to The Stage in what will be only their second performance there after May’s Sound Theory Live relaunch on Wynwood Radio party. The four-piece is poised to release their first set of new music since 2006, which should be available online and on CD in August of this year.

“Very few bands are greater in weight than Humbert – Ketchy Shuby is one of them and we are very happy to be sharing the stage with them,” offers Humbert’s colorful frontman Ferny Coipel. “Pound for pound, they are heavier than us.”

Ketchy Shuby’s explosive funk jams coupled with the group’s soulful tunesmith and the manic-energy of lead singer /guitarist Jason Joshua Hernandez-Rodriguez have kept them extremely busy this year. Coming off spring a Midwestern tour that took them through the Austin, TX mega-music festival SXSW, the band caught the attention of Spin Magazine. Their momentum has carried them through early summer with near-weekly gigs throughout South Florida in support of their latest single “I’ll Take Care of You”.

When asked his thoughts on the pairing of the two bands, Hernandez-Rodriguez simply says: “Humbert is my favorite band of all time. That’s all.”

For the third year in a row, The Stage Miami will be celebrating soul music over a two-night span in early summer. The 2013 installment of Soulfest Weekend will showcase a modern twist on soul, music, art, cocktails and food, offering the some of the area’s best musical talent and much more.

“We’re very excited about the multi-cultural flavor that this year’s lineup has to offer,” says co-owner and General Manager Johann Torres. “People should come ready to dance and enjoy a decidedly hip hop-influenced weekend.” Torres also books entertainment for The Stage and runs DNA Entertainment, the night’s presenting sponsor.

Friday’s performers The Resolvers from Deerfield Beach are a self-styled “Big-Band Reggae” outfit; the Affiliated Soul Team out of Miami delivers a smooth blend of jazz, soul, funk, hip/hop and R&B. The pedal steel-led Roosevelt Collier Trio, also out of Miami, cuts a mix of gospel, blues, soul and funk while Brooklyn, NY imports The Pimps of Joytime cap it off on Saturday, and the main act promises to deliver a nationally-touring, polished dance-party-funk vibe heavily steeped in Brooklyn DJ culture that is not to be missed.

The festivities will also include music spun by DJ Maneuvers, DJ Sire and DJ Heron, the latter of which has recently opened several high-profile hip-hop shows including the likes of Queen Latifah, Public Enemy and KRS-One. A live graffiti art exhibition plus the delectable presence of the Rum Cake Factory Food Truck (offering jambalaya, smoked ribs and chicken and rum cake) happens both nights.

Admission to the event at The Stage is $10 Friday, $15 Saturday and two-day passes are available for $20. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.thestagemiami.com. The show is open to those 21 & over.

Yes, No or I Don’t Know Why, are common responses to questions. When the answer is ” On the Tip of the Tongue”, some call it “Presque Vu” or almost seen. To experience the work of Maitejosune Urrechaga is similar in character to these psycholinguistic phenomenon. For her solo show, Maitejosune explores through portraiture the universal experience of unconscious thoughts and impulses as yet unexplained by science or spirituality.

Sound Theory Live to Relaunch on Wynwood Radio May 10
Award-winning music program celebrates return at The Stage Miami

After four years of broadcasting on local jazz station WDNA, the musical performance and interview program Sound Theory Live has found a new home: Wynwood Radio.

“We’re excited about resuming Sound Theory Live with our new media partners Wynwood Radio and look forward to bringing the global listening public even more compelling programming and music,” says founder and host Carlos F. Garcia, who also owns the show’s brick and mortar venue, The Stage Miami. “We invite everyone to celebrate with us at The Stage on Friday, May 10th, 2013 beginning at 7 p.m. for an extended two-hour show or listen in on the web. Following the show, Wynwood Radio will continue to stream live from The Stage with acts and DJs throughout the night.”

Adds Wynwood Radio’s Vice President and Director Vicente Solis: “We are delighted to be Sound Theory Live’s new home and media partners. Carlos and his team have many positive liaisons with the different Miami musical scenes. We believe that his show, in an online radio environment, can thrive, become more agile, fun and can also enhance the opportunity for community expansion that Wynwood Radio nurtures as part of its DNA.”

The move to web won’t change the show format, which according to the program website is “geared towards promoting the great local musicians by showcasing their talents live on the radio.” It will allow for greater content freedom and a looser format not beholden to news updates and public service announcements. Garcia adds: “The show expects to have increased flexibility both in programming and in location. We hope to bring the show to venues and events all over South Florida to help continue moving the Miami music scene forward!”

Once again the show will feature Garcia, voted Miami New Times’ “Best FM Radio Personality” in 2010, as the host, with the assistance of co-hosts Sasha Torres, co-owner of The Stage, venue booking agent Eric Garcia and show veteran, Andrea Alarcon.

Slated to play live and be interviewed on the maiden Wynwood Radio webcast are: Afrobeta, Electric Piquete, Brendan O’Hara, Radioboxer, Humbert, The Problem Kids, Bachaco as well as veteran Miami DJs DJ Sire Esq., DJ Manuvers and many more. There are some surprise guests in store as well. The festivities and webcast commence May 10 at 7 p.m., during the show’s usual slot and time, and will continue through 9 p.m. Subsequently, Sound Theory Live will assume it’s regularly scheduled time on Wynwood Radio and be webcast from locations across South Florida and re-aired on Sunday afternoons, and potentially during other days and times.

Admission to the event at The Stage is free until 11 p.m. and $5 thereafter; enjoy 2-for-1 happy hour drink specials from 6 to 9 p.m. and other specials throughout the night. You can listen live on the web by navigating to www.wynwoodradio.com.

Kiki Valdes The Valdeziacs Closing Reception 5/9/13

101 Exhibit LLC
101 NE 40th St
Miami, Florida 33137-3511

Please join us for the closing reception of the ‘Valdeziacs”

The Michael Margulies Artist Agency is proud to present “The Valdeziacs” a solo exhibition featuring new works from painter Kiki Valdes. “The Valdeziacs” is the culmination of Valdes’ most recent works. Many of the current paintings move into a new direction for the artist. Cartoon characters provide the first entry point to Valdes’ complex explorations of layered cut canvas collages, abstractions and figurative cartoon imagery. He paints the excited, cryptic images of bubbly faces and toon masks to convey a feeling of childhood nostalgia as a visual tactic to address space and form.

Valdes sees the cartoon imagery as a way to communicate and connect with a wider audience by conjuring memories. Cartoons have seeped into our consciousness since childhood and the artist uses those recognizable images and memories as prop for questions about painting and our obsession with the familiar. The new works in “The Valdeziacs,” the title in itself is a nod to childhood nostalgia, plays with form. Valdes turns various characteristics of known cartoon figures into a complete abstraction. Certain qualities like curves, exaggerated eyes and big mouth emphasize the duality of his compositions and create a battle between the familiar graphic figuration and what is familiar in painting. Valdes creates a place where darkness and light meet. He merges both and they open a dialogue and leave space for interpretation.

Currently, the Friends Forever Shelter was deemed not livable due to the amount of mold found in the building. Ms. Dee Smith, the founder is looking at options from several resources in finding temporary housing for her dogs. Curated by Joanna Kleinberg Romanow, Assistant Curator, Drawing Center, NY

Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present Precipice/PostModem by Miami-based artist Jillian Mayer. Mayer is known for eclectic video installations that compress virtual, cinematic, and physical space. This will be Mayer’s largest exhibition to date, passing fluidly from cinema to installation in both the physical and digital realm while incorporating interactive and technological elements to create a nonlinear meta-narrative.
The exhibition will feature sculptural and installation work satirically exploring the concept of a technological singularity, the theoretical moment in time when the boundary between human and machine no longer exists. Mayer uses comedy as a means to inspire introspection about technology’s place as a surrogate for spirituality in our lives, and implies that it is quickly becoming much more, regardless of whether or not the predictions of futurists like Ray Kurzweil come to fruition. The various pieces of her show explore the ramifications of this impending change, from angles that range from sociological to parodic to sublime.
Works include A Place for Online Dreaming, an installation with performance, linked to an interactive website at Aplaceforonlinedreaming.com as well as Swing Space, another video installation featuring several performers on swings above the gallery floor, transfixed by a projected digital reality; and For U, a sculpture that exists in augmented reality and can only be fully seen through a custom smartphone app. Other works will include self-aware paintings, faux infomercials, and poorly articulated androids constructed of digital tablets and Roomba vacuum cleaners.
Precipice/PostModem builds on a body of work that began with the experimental short film #PostModem which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013 and was later featured in an independent film retrospective at MoMA in New York as part of the Carte Blanche series.
