Photographs of World Happiness Summit Miami 2018

By Guest Contributor Sarah Hirth

“A multi-sensory and inclusive event gathering leading experts that takes us on a journey to learn, experience and practice tools that assist people on a path to sustainable happiness and well-being. Through knowledge and new positive mindsets attendees can reshape their personal, family and professional lives.” – from the WoHaSu website.

The WOHASU 2018, that took place at the University of Miami, was a weekend filled with inspiring and educational talks about happiness. Leading experts in from various different disciplines, such as positive psychology, fashion, media, sustainability, economics, mindfulness, technology, and business, attended this year’s summit. The topics of the presentations ranged from sharing personal experiences and personal projects to talking about the science behind happiness. Of course, there were many more areas that were covered, but in some way, they all related to the main topic of happiness. This year, the WOHASU welcomed people from over 35 countries and 45 US states.

Every morning a few early birds participated in the outdoor yoga program, before attending the first talk around 9 am. Although the weekend was filled with many talks, and panels, there were also breakout sessions during which multiple experts presented in different rooms at the same time. This allowed attendees to chose presentations that they were most interested in. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet with coaches in small groups. These sessions were great for networking, but also for talking about the lessons learned and how to best implement and integrate the lessons into a daily routine.

The festivities will include craft-making, music and dance (zapateado) workshops; a story time; a theater performance by the Ida y Vuelta folkloric ensemble; and Balaju: a puppet odyssey/ play, and they day will culminate with a parade of mojigangas (giant head puppets specific to San Miguel de Allende and Oaxaca) in the gardens.

The Playtime series provides parents an engaging (and free!) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. An “anti-concert” at the height of Miami Music Week, Noche de Brujas features an impressive line-up of artists who work with sound and music alongside musicians with strong visual language to create an immersive experience like no other. These eclectic artists align themselves with the esoteric and the spiritual, engaging in practices that verge on the shamanistic and the “brujeria,” including tarot readings, psychic divination and Yoruba religion as it is practiced in Afro-Cuban tradition.

Through each of their crafts, these artists are modern-day goddesses, sirens, aliens and witches who together will explore the gray areas between music and art, sacred and profane, traditional and futuristic – ultimately embracing the “witch” architype as a feminist and anti-patriarch in a larger movement that challenges preconceived notions of systems, knowledge, power…and the unknown.

The Noche de Brujas ceremony begins with a ritual cleansing of Faena Forum by Afro-Cuban dance and music group IFE-ILE, followed by an offering to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river representing womanhood in all of her forms. Through this practice, the space is converted into a living altar featuring inspired collaborative works by visual artists Virgo and Carlos Betancourt.

The night’s celebrations continue with a series of live performances, musical acts and immersive installations by Juliana Huxtable, Poorgrrrl, Voila Snow, Georgia Wall, Sandflower, Kalup Linzy, Jen DeNike, and Suzi Analogue.

Event is complimentary and open to the public. RSVP required. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to experience the purification ritual and live tarot readings. Visit http://www.faena.com/blog/article/noche-de-brujas/ to RSVP and learn more.

About Sergio’s Cuban
After an extensive search, Sergio’s Cuban awarded the rights to Cuban Manna, LLC for Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The development group is led by operator Manny Rodriguez who was the first person to bring Domino’s Pizza and Baskin Robbins to Latin America. Mr. Rodriguez has partnered with Altis Cardinal’s principals Frank Guerra and AJ Suarez. Both AJ and Frank currently have over $1.5 billion dollars in real estate development throughout the United States and were excited to be part of launching the growth of Sergio’s Cuban.

Under CEO Carlos Gazitua’s vision, Sergio’s Cuban is breaking all the rules. The ethos behind his bold new concept? “A Fresh Take on Cuban.” Diners will queue up and customize the ingredients in their dish while overseeing the process. Ropa Vieja, Citrus Grilled Chicken, Organic Quinoa, Cauliflower Rice or Sergio’s award-winning Steak or Cuban Sandwich; there are no wrong answers as hungry patrons are emboldened to make the call. Sergio’s Cuban lives in a world of authentic yet unique (i.e. classic cafecito v. newly launched nitro café con leche on tap; or the traditional guava pastelitos and croquetas v. oven-baked empanadas of carne and maduros or vaca frita).

The new fast-casual concept has already opened in Florida International University, American Airlines Arena, Ft. Lauderdale Airport and will now be launching new locations throughout South Florida and beyond, beginning with North Miami—its first retail establishment.

Wednesdays–Fridays, 1:00 – 6:00 PM; Saturdays, 1:00–8:00 PM; Sundays, 1:00 – 6:00 PM

Tino Sehgal creates works that are constructed situations which question the traditional subject-object relationship of visual art, and in which the interaction between the visitor and the work takes a central position. Sehgal takes language, singing, dancing, and other modes of behavior as his artistic material, often generating immersive artworks that are felt more than they are seen. This Situation (2007) enables a conversation that throws into question our self-image as a society and our roles as individuals within that society.
Sehgal is a Berlin-based artist whose work has been widely shown internationally. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Among many other places, Sehgal’s work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 12th Havana Biennial, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil.

This Situation is part of the Living Together Performance Series, a year-long cross-disciplinary series featuring performance art, installations, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops, reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

Long inspired by the cultural diversity and beauty of Miami, the city where he spent most of his life, acclaimed Cuban American poet Richard Blanco will read from his works during an evening cruise onboard the Miami Lady. As the boat sails on Biscayne Bay under the stars, past illuminated landmarks old and new, audiences will hear a poetry that grapples with the state of the world and our place in it, and demonstrates why Miami remains an incubator for artistic talent in many fields.

An influential poet and story teller, Richard Blanco invites audiences to reconnect to the heart of human experience. Born in Madrid to Cuban exiled parents and raised in Miami, he has created a body of work characterized by the negotiation of cultural identity and place. He is the author of the award-winning memoirs The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood and For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey; the poetry chapbooks Matters of the Sea, One Today, and Boston Strong; the poetry collections Looking for the Gulf Motel, Directions to the Beach of the Dead, and City of a Hundred Fires; a children’s book of his inaugural poem, “One Today,” illustrated by Dav Pilkey; and Boundaries, a collaboration with photographer Jacob Hessler. With Ruth Behar, he is co-creator of the blog Bridges to/from Cuba: Lifting the Emotional Embargo, which provides a cultural and artistic platform for sharing the real lives and complex emotional histories of thousands of Cubans across the globe. He has been a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow and received honorary doctorates from Macalester College, Colby College, and the University of Rhode Island. He has continued to write occasional poems for organizations and events such as the re-opening of the U.S. embassy in Havana.

Poetry and Jazz finds San Francisco writer Jack Hirschman joined by the Terni Jazz Orchestra Ensemble for an innovative evening of music, poetry, and politics, featuring the poet’s distinctive voice as an integral part of original music compositions. The longstanding collaboration between Hirschman and the group of Italian musicians, led by composer/arranger Marco Collazzoni and saxophonist Francesco Guzzetta, began at the International Poetry Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia, thanks to the patronage of Casa della Poesia di Salerno, and culminated with the recording of a CD presented at Teatro Valle in Rome in 2014.

Hirschman is one of the most distinctive voices of the American counterculture, known for his radical engagement with both poetry and politics. His long literary career as acclaimed poet, essayist, and translator is interlaced with artists like Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Born in 1933, he grew up in the Bronx and, as a young man, had an early brush with fame when Ernest Hemingway wrote him a letter, later published as “A Letter to a Young Writer.” Hirschman has lived in California since the 1970s. In 2002, he received the Book Award Life Achievement from the Before Columbus Foundation and in 2006 he was named Poet Laureate of San Francisco. Hirschman has published more than fifty volumes of poetry and has translated radical poets from around the world from Russian, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Albanian, Yiddish, Vietnamese, and Creole.

As an immigrant coming of age in a politically unstable Brazil, Anna Maria Maiolino searched for a new language to articulate everyday human existence. One of the most important artists of her generation, Maiolino’s multidisciplinary practice has always sought to connect art and life, to give structure to primordial experiences of language, self, and the body. The performance-installation Entrevidas (Between Lives), was originally conceived in 1981, during the period between the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship and its return to democracy. Spectators were invited to cross an obstacle course of hundreds of eggs on a cobbled street of Rio de Janeiro to experience feelings of uncertainty and risk, but also to imagine the resiliency of life and of new beginnings. Revisiting the installation today, the artist points to the precariousness and potential of the present moment.

Anna Maria Maiolino was born in Italy in 1942 and migrated to Brazil in 1960. She participated in the Nova Figuração (New Figuration) movement there in the early 1960s. Shifting away from representation toward Conceptualism in the early 1970s, Maiolino began working with Super 8, photography, and installation art that prominently featured clay. Major exhibitions of her work have been held in 2001 at The Drawing Center and Art in General, New York; in 2005 at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; in 2006 at Miami Art Central; in 2010 at the Camden Arts Centre, London, and the Antoní Tàpies Foundation, Barcelona; and in 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her work is included in the permanent collections of major museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Orchestra Miami’s Nicklaus Children’s Family Fun Series concludes at 3 PM on Sunday, March 25th with “Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant” and “ A Treeful of Monkeys”, two delightful and witty pieces for children performed by the chamber ensemble of Orchestra Miami and narrator.
What do you get when you mix a tuba with a baboon? A tubaboon! Prepare to explore a wilderness where birds, beasts, vegetables and flowers have been mysteriously scrambled together to create creatures you’ve never seen before! Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant is based on the award-winning children’s book of the same name by poet Jack Prelutsky, with music composed by Lucas Richman. Known as the “Children’s Poet Laureate” Mr. Prelutsky is the pre-eminent author of silly poems for kids. This mash-up of inanimate objects with animals will have you giggling and trying to guess what comes next!
A Treeful of Monkeys is composed by Daniel Dorff, and based on a traditional African Folk Tale about a hat seller who takes a nap under a tree and wakes up to discover that all the monkeys are wearing his hats! How will he get them back? Find out in this charming and fun piece.
Both pieces are performed by the chamber ensemble of Orchestra Miami, featuring Orlando Forte on the violin, Stanley Spinola on the French Horn, Robert Deutsch on the Cello, Christine Pascual-Fernandez on the Clarinet, Mark Schubert on percussion and Elaine Rinaldi on the piano, and narrated by Carbonell Award winning actor Chaz Mena.
The performance takes place on Sunday, March 25, 3:00 PM at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, 33156. Taking the form of an unconsummated striptease with a multicultural pop soundtrack, Colombian artist María José Arjona’s performance All the Others in Me functions as a bridge between “miss-understandings.” It refuses to point at anything specific or resolve these misunderstandings, but instead offers a panoramic vista on our perception of each other across distances. These distances, intentionally created, augmented, altered, and manipulated by mass media and other systems of control, place us in positions of submission under a blanket of so-called “information.” Arjona’s work highlights the continuous transitioning of thoughts that encourage us to just see and absorb but never question. All the Others in Me participates in several conversations between the objectified female body in Western civilization and the feminine body within Islam.

María José Arjona lives and works in her native Bogota. Her artistic practice focuses on long durational performances in which the body is the primary material and medium of visual communication, generating non-linear narratives beyond the concept of identity. Arjona’s work is included in many public and private collections internationally. She has presented her work across Latin America and at the Louvre in Paris; the Thessaloniki Biennale; the Guangzhou Triennale; the Madre Museum in Naples, Italy; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; La Caixa in Madrid; the Ballroom Marfa, Texas; The Watermill Center in Water Mill, New York; and the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City. Arjona will have a major solo exhibition in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota, accompanied by the first large publication on her work, which includes an essay by André Lepecki.

On Saturday April 7th, Ferial Youakim, a former refugee, published author, global entrepreneur and image consultant will discuss her newly released book “Beyond Beauty – A Refugee’s Journey in Pursuit of Happiness” and sign complimentary copies for attendees at the Arts Garage, a non-profit visual and performing arts organization located at 94 NE 2nd Ave, Delray Beach, Fl. The memoir is Ferial’s journey of self-discovery and empowerment, from a childhood in a refugee camp to a successful business woman and global figure. Tickets are $30 and include refreshments and a copy of the Ferial newly released book. Tickets are available: http://artsgarage.org/authorevents/

“I can educate you, show you, and tell you that you are beautiful, but you have to believe it, and keep that belief alive in everything that you do. You already are a masterpiece.” –Ferial Youakim

Many born into a refugee camp would forever label themselves as a failure, and deem their lack of adequate education a tragedy that is enormous. Only the extraordinary would overcome these challenges to rise tall, unbreakable and beautiful, destined to inspire the rest of us.

Ferial Youakim is an image consultant with a successful international business. Those who seek out her services do so with the intent that she will “make them beautiful” – indeed, like she is. However, Ferial is adamant that this isn’t at all what she does. She reminds them of their beauty.

Ferial wrote Beyond Beauty to tell the often-tragic details of her own story, of the occasions when she so badly wanted to just give up because the stress felt unbearable.

The problem was that Ferial was working as an image consultant, convincing others of their beauty and unique selves, when she in fact was suffering crippling self esteem issues.

“On the outside, I was a strong woman and a symbol of hope, perseverance and determination, but on the inside, I was broken. It was only when others could see the strength that I did not know I had that I was able to change my focus and to start looking at the opportunities that had presented themselves to me. Because a lot of people looked up to me, being strong was my only choice,” –Ferial Youakim

Ferial still considered herself “lost” when she became a mother to her three children – lost in Lebanon, searching for herself in Australia and eventually finding herself in South Florida, when her husband received a stupendous job opportunity.

However, partly because of her self-diagnosed remaining “thoughts of a refugee.” Ms Youakim regrets some of her behaviour and actions as a mother, and has even written a public apology to her children. However, as one reads Beyond Beauty they too may find her recollections and explanations as overly harsh, when they discover the opportunities and unrelenting love she has actually afforded to her children.

This is the perfect example of the shards of poor self-esteem that remain, even though most of them have been torn down by Ms Youakim so that she may live her life more fully and without reservation.

Ferial recalls a story when she and her siblings were children. Their father, a manual labourer, was always looking to save money whenever possible, on one family trip; her father could not afford the beautiful tiles in a shop. So by prior agreement, Ms Youakim’s father and all of his children were on their hands and knees searching for the various broken shards. They were all her father could afford, and upon gently placing them together, they would be beautiful and perfect in their own right.

“Those tiles were our flying carpet and also the reminder of the love he has for us, All these years later, I now discover that love and beauty are inseparable.” –Ferial Youakim

The Diaries of A Submissive are exposed in burlesque dance and poetry!

Sugar Brown Burlesque: The Diaries of a Submissive.

Sugar Brown: The slinky alter ego of dancer Lanita Shera, who explores different facets of sexuality with her original burlesque productions. In this show, Sugar does this not just through slinky choreography, but with poetry, as well.
Burlesque: It’s a sensual art form that incorporates dance, risqué costumes, and frank, friendly lustiness, elegantly celebrating a side of life we don’t always talk about.

The Diaries of a Submissive: Our protagonist takes on a newly obedient role in the bedroom, and reveals a candid look at her feelings and experiences.

Join us after the show for an exlusive meet and greet. Tickets are limited so get them fast!

Andre Lepecki: In the Event of Encounter (or, The Improbable Living Together) 4/20/18

Museum of Art and Design @ MDC
600 Biscayne Boulevard,
Miami, Florida, Florida 33145

This lecture-performance addresses the notion of “encounter” as essential to a politics and an aesthetics of the commons. By drawing from several philosophical and political traditions that have analyzed the ethics and politics of the encounter, and by invoking artistic propositions that bring into the world improbable events (particularly in performance art and experimental choreography) André Lepecki will consider how the event of encounter precipitates groundings for living away from the necropolitical logic of our current imperial, colonial and murderous neoliberal monohumanism.
André Lepecki is Professor and Chairperson in Performance Studies at New York University. He is editor of several anthologies on dance and performance theory, including Of the Presence of the Body (2004) and Dance (2012). An independent performance curator, he has created projects for Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; the Hayward Gallery, London; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the 2016 Biennale of Sydney. Lepecki is the author of Exhausting Dance: Performance and the Politics of Movement (2006, translated into ten languages) and Singularities: Dance in the Age of Performance (2016).

Based on more than two years of field research—traveling to shrinking post-industrial cities, sprawling metro regions, struggling rural towns, border regions, areas impacted by natural and man-made disaster, and places of persistent poverty, this exhibition presents collaborative designs for more equitable, inclusive and sustainable communities.

Organized by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian American Design Museum, and curated by Cynthia E. Smith, the exhibition features sixty design projects from every region across the United States, the exhibition will highlight design solutions that expand access to education, food, health care and affordable housing; increase social and economic inclusion; offer improved alternative transportation options; and provide a balanced approach to land use between the built and natural environment.
By the People aims to empower visitors to see themselves as designers—not just of objects, but also of ideas, strategies, and solutions that improve their daily lives. The exhibition will showcase the innovative and impactful actions generated through design, and inspire creative problem-solving at local, regional, national, and even international levels.

Exhibition on View During Museum Hours:
Wednesdays–Fridays, 1:00 – 6:00 PM; Saturdays, 1:00–8:00 PM; Sundays, 1:00 – 6:00 PM

More than 130 feet long, William Kentridge’s 8-channel video installation, More Sweetly Play the Dance, encircles the viewer. Partly filmed live, partly rendered in Kentridge’s signature animated style, the work covers the walls of a gallery with images of a procession in a blasted landscape. An update of the danse macabre, this parade of death includes a brass band in the lead, followed by people carrying possessions or shrouded bodies, priests, patients dragging their IV drips, skeletons, and a live ballerina (South African dancer Dada Masilo), who wears a military uniform and carries a rifle. Wooden chairs for the viewers and four megaphones on tripods playing the soundtrack make this performative video an immersive experience. Combining elements of medieval allegory with evocations of recent sights such as Syrian refugees and bodies felled by Ebola, Kentridge presents a never-ending carnivalesque reminder of our own mortality that is by turns morbid, chilling, comic, and political. But in the artist’s hands, the triumph of death ultimately becomes a celebration of resilience and life.
William Kentridge is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists of our time. He has gained international recognition for his distinctive animated short films, and for the charcoal drawings he creates through a unique process of erasure and re-drawing. A native of Johannesburg, Kentridge has always addressed the more challenging and intimate aspects of contemporary life in South Africa, during both Apartheid and the post-Apartheid period, investigating the ways in which identities are shaped through shifting ideas of history and place. In the course of his examination, he explores the role of poetry in contemporary society, and offers a biting, satirical commentary of that society, proposing a way of seeing life as process rather than as fact. He is a visual artist, a filmmaker, a director, and a great raconteur. His body of work has spanned several artistic disciplines over three decades. Through the mediums of film, sculpture, installation, charcoal drawing, and his work in theater, Kentridge has explored the nature of memory and emotions, and the ambiguity and complexity of social conflicts in the age of globalization.

Cost: $15 – $64

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the authentic way with a performance of the Irish musical ONCE playing now through March 25, 2018 at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre. Set in Dublin, ONCE is the smash-hit musical that has captured hearts around the world with its touching love story, glorious music and irresistible humor. The story follows a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. There’s no mistaking the chemistry between them. As it begins to grow, his music soars to powerful, new heights. Theirs is an unlikely connection, though, that turns out to be deeper and more complex than other everyday romances. ONCE is an unforgettable story about going for one’s dreams and the power of music to connect us all.

Actors’ Playhouse has transformed its Mainstage theatre into a Dublin bar for this much-anticipated production. Featuring Miami’s only onstage bar, audience members are invited to join in a lively music session with the cast before the show while enjoying a drink onstage in our authentic Irish pub. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime.

All of the music in ONCE is played live on stage by an extraordinary cast of actor-musicians. Between them, the 12 actors play 30 instruments during each performance, including guitar, cajon, melodica, harmonica, piano, violin, castanets, bass guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, tambourine, drums, acccordion and cello. The company’s production includes members from the original Broadway cast as well as several actors who have performed the show regionally.

St. Patrick’s Day week performances Wednesday – Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Our projects show a critical view on aspects of the modern architecture, and highlight the importance of structural accuracy and distinctness, construction viability, transparency, and most importantly, a comprehension of the urban space as dialogue between architectural works. The projects of SPBR have become increasing recognition in prizes, conferences, publications and exhibits in Brazil and throughout the world.

Miami, Mar 5, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center adds a twist to its Little Havana Social Club series, presenting La Banda Morisca at the CubaOcho Arts Center in the heart of Little Havana at 6pm on Sun., Mar 18.

While Koubek Center will continue to host its popular social dance series in its gardens, on this special occasion, it is stepping out-and off site-in efforts to expand its reach and collaborate with other cultural partners. The venue could not resist the opportunity to present this renowned flamenco fusion band-direct from Jerez de la Frontera, and its timely coincidence with Miami Film Festival 2018 and MDC Live Arts’ Ojala/Inshallah series.
The changing border that separated the Arab-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada from the Crown of Aragon and Castile during the 13th and 15th century was known as “La Banda Morisca”-a place where Christians and Muslims, as well as the first gypsies coming to the Iberian Peninsula, met and coexisted.
Drawing their name and mix of influences from this strip of no-man’s-land, La Banda Morisca is a septet from Andalucia who incorporate traditions from both sides of the Mediterranean- including Andalusian moaxajas and North African chaabi- with flamenco and Andalusian rock on a range of instruments that includes oud (lute), guitarra Morisca (Moorish guitar), tarota (oboe), banjo, bass, percussion, saxophones and drums.
Acclaimed for their intoxicating blend of traditional and modern sounds, La Banda Morisca evokes the cultural heritage of ancient Al-Andalus and its lasting impact across Andalusia, the Maghreb, and the Near East.

Make it a night of Film + Music as cultural partners team up: Start your evening at The Tower Theater with Miami Film Festival’s screening of Indestructible: The Soul of Salsa, which follows Spanish flamenco singer Diego El Cigala as he embarks on a journey through Cali, Havana, Punta Cana , San Juan, Miami and New York. Then, cross Calle Ocho to the La Banda Morisca concert-the official after-party of the film festival screening. Package tickets available.

The LHSC series continues the following month with the Betsayda Machado, “the Voice of Venezuela, ” offers up the spirit-shaking vocals and percussion of Afro-Venezuelan soul on Saturday, Apr. 21.

WHEN: Sunday, Mar 18 at 6pm
WHERE: CubaOcho Arts Center | 1465 SW 8th St Miami 33135

“With Maqueque, Canadian Jane Bunnett brings together an all-female band of Cuban all-stars for a sublime synthesis of modern jazz with a Cuban soul.” – Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

Thirty years! That’s how long soprano saxophonist-flutist Jane Bunnett has been involved with, immersed in, and dedicated herself to the music of Cuba.
The latest chapter in Jane’s excursion is Maqueque, Jane’s exciting, energetic, all-female, all-Cuban sextet. “Everything I’ve done has led up to this group, which is the perfect vehicle for now,” Jane says with pride. Brought together and led by Jane, all of the five players have grown into a tight ensemble and individually blossomed into confident composers. After winning a 2014 JUNO Award (the Canadian equivalent of a GRAMMY) for their eponymously named first recording, the 2017 sophomore release for Maqueque, “Oddara,” nominated for a 2018 GRAMMY® for Best Latin Jazz Album, expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first effort, and further exhibits the superb collective talent that comprises this acclaimed, energetic group. Their invitations to two of the most prestigious jazz festivals in 2018, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival, also further validate Jane Bunnett as a prominent exponent of Afro-Cuban music optimized for global consumption.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by a grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

Lauderdale Airport and will now be launching new locations throughout South Florida and beyond, beginning with North Miami–its first retail establishment.
