Artfromz Invites You to Wynwood’s 2nd Saturday Night 10/11/08 7-10 PM
“Every Picture Tells a Story”……..&………”Mr. & Mrs. Candidate”
Fabian De La Flor——————–Donna Haynes——————-Rosario Rivera-Bond

and continuing Fabian’s Artformz Outzide project until Nov. 3
David Rohn & Danilo de la Torre of Homo Sapiens Live Art
Special Guest Artists Performing Outside
7:30pm – 8:30pm & 9:00pm – 10:00pm
and in the project room David Rohn, performance based photographs
In collaboration with Carol Jazzar – Contemporary Art

The work of these three artists featured for the Artformz October show relate stories, or commentaries, on the human condition. The works each base content on the human figure yet use very different approaches to technique, substance and tone. Fabian De La Flor addresses the personal, urban experience with his signature quirky figures in cityscapes. Donna Haynes brings works from her continuing series of drawn and constructed installations that document the personal and emotional journeys of friends and family. Rosario Rivera-Bond exhibiting work from a new series, features a large format painting dealing with the comic and satirical of female issues of beauty, consumerism and aging.

Artormz is also very pleased to present a special project by Homo Sapiens Live Art. This Miami performance group, recently formed by David Rohn and Danilo de la Torre, will perform their piece titled “Mr and Mrs Candidate”; a continuous performance based on the way presidential (and other) candidates running for public office in the US express themselves. The artists felt that the body language, gestures and expressions of political candidates were an interesting starting point to examining the spectacle of election performance during this and past election season. The performance will take place on the sidewalk in front of Artformz Gallery

In addition, David Rohn will exhibit a series of photographs related to the performance in the Gallery Project Room.

Fredric Snitzer Gallery : Lia Halloran Project Room : Opening Reception 10/11/08

Fredric Snitzer Gallery : Lia Halloran Project Room : Opening Reception : Saturday Oct.11 7:30 – 10:00pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery is proud to present “Dark Skate” a site specific project consisting of nine photographic images by, Los Angeles based artist, Lia Halloran

These photographic images are an exploration in drawing, performance and photography in itself. “The idea of drawing with light is not new as a concept, but Halloran not only immerses herself in the urban tropics, but makes herself the instrument to draw” Richard Arregui, Co-Director Fredric Snitzer Gallery.

The works are rich in color density and contrast, with the movement of light streaking across and around the visual frame. The photographs taken in low light situations allow them to become self-portraits of Halloran’s movement. “Because of the darkness and film exposure length, there is no trace of my body, only the line created by my actions” Lia Halloran.

These works created over a period of seven nights in Miami with the collaboration of photographer, William Mackenzie-Smith.

Lia Halloran was born in Chicago, IL and attended UCLA for her BFA and received her MFA at Yale University, New Haven, CT. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

David Castillo Gallery opens The Continuing Adventures of our Heroine 10/11/08

The Continuing Adventures of our Heroine
Opening Reception Saturday, October 11, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Continuing Adventures of our Heroine. The heroine of this all-woman group exhibition includes Susan Lee Chun, Francie Bishop Good, Natalya Laskis, Lee Materrazzi, Cindy Sherman, Jaimie Warren, and Michelle Weinberg.

Natalya Laskis, Lee Materrazzi, and Francie Bishop Good manipulate ordinary objects and spaces. These artists examine how contemporary women assign significance and emotion in an age beyond that of Valerie Solanas, when establishing recognition and power as a feminist, female, or effeminate artist entailed simply and singularly shooting Andy Warhol. Laskis, Materrazzi, and Good remind the viewer that to be a woman– and more importantly, to be human– means an acquisition of varying degrees of passivity and chaos, comeliness and wretchedness, creativity and dysfunction, youth and maturity, femininity and masculinity.

Michelle Weinberg creates an evolving landscape of contemporary folklore punctuated by vehicles of communication: text messages, billboards, and commercial signage. Through abstract image and words, sublimity and narration, the natural world and constructed reality, Weinberg tailors chance into an aestheticism harkening to her personal experience growing up female in the 60s and 70s.

Susan Lee Chun’s inherited Korean and American identities tint the lens through which she perceives her experience as a woman, finding as little authenticity in race and ethnicity as Weinberg does in women’s traditional roles. In You are cordially invited to tea time, an installation/performance, viewers may drink tea together. The act references the domestic sphere, traditional Asian tea ceremonies, and Judy Chicago’s feminist landmark, The Dinner Party. Sharing tea in a gallery– like eating Rirkrit Tiravanija’s infamous Thai cuisine– destines participants to bifurcate but never leave the table.

Like Nikki Lee, Jaimie Warren stages her physical form within scenes of conspicuous or cult identities presumably far removed from her own anima. In Warren’s photographs, as around Chun’s tea table, a woman’s essence is misplaced in the metaphysics of personal and collective identity. As Leigh Bowery’s avant-garde fashion and performance sensibilities suggested, appearance can sometimes be everything– certainly more than isolated sex, gender, or experience.

Cindy Sherman has long been hailed the queen of masquerade. Masquerade is not new to women, familiar with altering, unleashing, and subjugating identities in order to participate in “men’s work.” Seen in conjunction with the rest of The Continuing Adventures of our Heroine, the gruesome corpse or doll-like artifice with which Sherman presents herself should awaken not remorse, but certainty of Sherman’s exponential multiplication as a woman, an artist, and citizen of a lived-in world.

Rostarr – “Wreckless Abandon” 10/11/08

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2008
ROSTARR – WRECKLESS ABANDON
Curated by Al Moran
O.H.W.O.W. / 3100 NW 7 AVENUE / MIAMI / FLORIDA / WWW.OH-WOW.COM
As you walk the exhibition space the evidence is clear that Romon Kimin Yang, the artist; the painter, has arrived. Also known as Rostarr, Yang is a member of the genial urban improvisers the Barnstormers’ collective. Yang now sheds all labels and groups as he matures profoundly with this first solo exhibition in Miami, Florida, titled: Wreckless Abandon, reckless by design and adventurous by choice.

Early on in the 1990’s, Rostarr broke through the New York City art scene with his signature trademark, a guerrilla type of graphic design, using the newest digital media tools at the time. He mastered these tools and evolved from his iconography and graffiti subject matter. Now a soloist, Yang is evermore a Renaissance-man who has often executed a series of works in several media.

Yet, his moving image output doesn’t stop there, with a recent screening of the video, Kill the Ego – an audio-visual collaboration with photographer and artist Stephan Crasneanscki at the Centre Pompidou in France, he begins to explore and experiment with new paths in the realm of video art. Even more so, Rostarr continues to surprise us as he removes his newly acquired and validated filmmaker’s cap and easily trades it once again for a French artist’s beret during a very recent visit to the Nam June Paik Art Center for a massive painting installation. This is reckless abandonment in action.

Indeed, the show, Wreckless Abandon, demonstrates the imaginative ways in which Rostarr has reached across his design output and known creative persona to re-invent his art and himself today. His work here breaks with not just dualities and dichotomies as usual, but transcends as the works embody the creative free spirit needed to surpass resistance of any kind. Rostarr manages to cross the bridge because his visual harmonies are geometrical lines undefined by formulaic patterns.

Certainly, this exhibition is not post-graffiti, it’s just Rostarr, it’s anti-anxiety, call it organic harmonies of the self in re-discovery. My strongest suggestion is this; choose your own title for the show. Walk away with a unique interpretation, juxtapose two dynamic words together or think of one word that has all the meaning you can put into it and that’s the show – for you or maybe not.

Excerpt from the essay Organic Harmonies by Rey Parlà

IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008
For the fourth year, the auction attracts some of the most prestigious artists in the world

The International Kids Fund (IKF) Latin American Art Auction 2008 will be held on Tuesday evening October 14 at CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation at 1018 North Miami Avenue in Miami. This auction is well respected in the art world because of the caliber of contemporary international art it offers. Known in the art community as “The Collector’s Auction” last year, it attracted more than 500 serious collectors from all over the world. This year 100 prominent artists have donated their works and the selection of art this year is more exciting than ever.

What makes the IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION important is that the event benefits the International Kids Fund, a program of Jackson Memorial Foundation that pays for critical surgeries, treatments and necessary care for children with life threatening conditions. IKF has helped hundreds of children since its inception in 2002—and not a day goes by when IKF learns of some child who needs to be treated at Holtz Children’s Hospital. And—Who Can Say No? IKF cannot.

According to Hernan Carrara, former Managing Editor of Arte al Dia International magazine and responsible for the art selection since 2005: “While the great Latin American masters are fetching increasingly high prices at international auctions, many contemporary artists from Latin America are creating works that are promptly snapped up by U.S. and European museums and collectors. In Miami, local and international collectors will have the opportunity to buy art works from artists that may be seen at major art fairs, but with one important distinction: exceptional prices.”

Rosy Cancela, chairman and founder of the auction says, “By purchasing art at our Auction, collectors will walk away with amazing art, and also affect the lives of very sick children.”

Pooch
Muerto Mechanico (top photo)

Raised on a diet of Walt Disney World , Ray Harryhausen films, H. P. Lovecraft novels, Comics, and Florida tourist traps, Pooch paints images that seem to exist in a bizarre afterlife. Early on, Pooch was exposed to artists and illustrators, such as Frank Frazetta, MC Escher, Dali, Bosch and HR Giger.
A self- taught artist, Pooch owes much of his painting skills to over ten years of daily tattooing and drawing. His art is a visual cocktail mix of Far East mysteries, the magic of European painting with a shot of tattoo culture, shaken and stirred, and served up in a souvenir tiki skull.

Working in different series allows Pooch the freedom to explore various cultural symbols, but also keeps him inspired to dig deeper into those respective subjects. His earlier works are done in oil, containing architectural elements and sinuously carved statue like figures in static display. Newer works are in acrylic and reflect his exposure to Disney World and Florida theme parks, with surreal carnival ride facades (a reflection of the false fronts of modern society) decorated with symbolic figures of death from Tibetan rituals to the Mexican Day of the Dead Festival.

Pooch’s paintings are intended to hold the viewer’s attention, which is quite a challenge in today’s TV, film and computer age. Holding the old masters in high regard, he has a strong respect for painters of the Flemish age such as Bosch and Van Eyk, and modern artists such as Todd Schorr, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden and Robe.

Paul Torres
Notrica 32nd Street Market (bottom photo)

Paul Torres’ art embodies a rich imagination and is laced with social commentary and a soulful interpretation of everyday life. Born in Chile, his interest in art began at age 3 after being introduced to comic books. He started drawing soon after and his father hired a private art tutor for him. By the age 7 he was already enrolled in an art correspondence school. Paul also became influenced early on by Hollywood films and mostly enjoys horror films and Westerns.

At the age of 9, Paul came to the United States for a one-year stay and fell in love with the art culture here. After immigrating to the United States permanently at age 19, he served in the U.S. Army, attended Otis Parsons Art Institute for two years, and then in 1998 he received his Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He has had the privilege to study with very prominent and leading artists such as Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Norwegian artist Jan Saether at Bruchion School in Los Angeles, and Joseph Mendez at the Businessman’s Art Institute in Los Angeles. He worked for several years in the animation and movie industry while continuing to paint for gallery shows and private collections.

He works with a variety of mediums ranging from oil to acrylic, ink and dry mediums, preferring oil. Although he feels very comfortable working from life and models, he also uses his imagination combined with working from life to bring the work into a more personal level and aiming for magic realism rooted in the tradition of the old masters with undertones of modern influences. Paul has been called a visionary artist and a soul artist.

Spazio Nero | Brickell| Proudly Presents “Chuck Love” 10/4/08

<<< SPAZIO NERO | BRICKELL| PROUDLY PRESENTS “CHUCK LOVE” SATURDAY OCTOBER 4TH >>>
Miami is Ready – Are You?
How do you pack all that soul, funk, fire, and love into one skinny white dude? Chuck Love has found his calling. Behind the decks, and the microphone where the groove is musical and solid. Good vibes flow out of the sound system as infectious hooks float, smoky chords punch, and solos fly, in this sensitive yet effective beat-down for your head, your soul, and your rump. Chuck Love’s name has been associated with the likes of Prince, New Order, The Cure, Ministry, Art Of Noise, Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby, Yello, and countless other acts that have driven EDM over the last 20 years. Signed to Om Records in the front half of 2006, this music magnet from Minneapolis is a certified whiz with almost any instrument, layering those sounds under pop-friendly vocals.

Now you’ll be sure to find Chuck behind the decks juggling vocals, guitar, flute, sawed-off black trumpet, percussion, and that weird little keyboard thingy with the huka hose on it LIVE, while bumping through a largely original set that runs from lush chords and organic textures to straight up speaker freakin’ electro-thump. You have never seen anything like this DJ/Live alchemy, and your fist will pump as you realize that there’s a truck load of soul, funk, fire, and Love packed into one DJ.

Gustavo Santaolalla
Juan Campodonico
DJ Supervielle and the full live band!
The Argentine-Uruguayan collective, made up of some of the most accomplished young artists from both sides of the Rio Plata, have just released a new masterpiece, Mar Dulce.

This is the nexus of a creative powerhouse – the tentacles of Bajofondo’s individual components reach into all the coolest and most innovative aspects of Latin music and culture. Santaolalla is one of the top music producers in Latin America, and composer of soundtracks for films like Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback Mountain and Babel. He is a singer, composer, producer, guitarist, and director of Surco Records and publishing company. The list of artists he has produced is pages long, but includes Juanes, Julieta Venegas, De La guarda, Juana Molina, Kronos Quartet, Antonio Carmona. With his project Café de los Maestros he has produced some of the most significant living legends of tango. Producers/Djs and keyboardists Campo and Supervielle have also enormous reach into the creative world of Latin music. They have recently worked with artists like Jorge Drexler, Ximena Sarinana.

But when the collective comes together to record and tour as Bajofondo, the sum is even greater than the whole of the talented parts. It is the sound of the hottest club in Buenos Aires late at right, and right now. A joyous, but complex mix of tango, dub, drum&bass, dance beats and jazz. Live, the show features the live projections of VJ Veronica Loza.

This concert has received support from Club Med, Business Centers International, Atlantic Broadband, the City of Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council, and Miami Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.

“Life’s been a real bitch to Beatrice Hunsdorfer. And vice versa.”
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Paul Zindel, this is another critically acclaimed joint effort of husband and wife team Newman and Woodward. Produced and directed by Newman, Woodward portrays the eccentric young widow who is raising her two disparate daughters in an atmosphere of bitterness, hatred and over-protection that threatens their very growth and development. The title of the movie reflects the mothers’ anger at her daughter’s science teacher, when her daughter’s experiment shows how radiation kills marigolds, but sometimes causes them to grow more beautiful. This experiment becomes a metaphor for her own life, as she struggles to bloom in a household deadened by her mother’s alcoholism and her sister’s lethargy.

“one of the most interesting compositional voices working today.” John Zorn

As part of the 12 Nights Series of Computer Music & Art at the Harold Golen Gallery, an energetic, polyrhythmic concert featuring post-minimalist artist Lukas Ligeti. Performing live solo electronic music mainly on the innovative Marimba Lumina, Lukas brings elements of African music, electronica, jazz, and indie pop. Program includes new works off of Lukas’ latest album Afrikan Machinery (Tzadik).

Described as “one of the most interesting compositional voices working today,” Lukas Ligeti is known for combining his talents as a composer with his improvisational fantasy, and highly diverse African-tinged soundscapes. Steeped in the musical traditions of his father Gyorgy Ligeti, Lukas embodies reinvention by making his contemporary music crackle with energy. As a composer, he has been commissioned by Bang on a Can, the Vienna Festwochen, Ensemble Modern, Kronos Quartet, Radio France, and many others. As a drummer, he has played and/or recorded with artists such as John Zorn, Gary Lucas, Eugene Chadbourne, Henry Kaiser, Raoul Bjorkenheim, Michael Manring, Daniel Carter, Eyal Maoz, John Tchicai, Benoot Delbecq, Pyrolator, Jim O’Rourke, Borah Bergman, Robert Dick, and Rupert Huber. As band leader, he co-leads Burkina Electric, the first electronica band of the West African country of Burkina Faso.

Miami’s vice? City at bottom in volunteering
By MATT SEDENSKY and DAVID CRARY

MIAMI (AP) – Blame it on the traffic. Or the number of new immigrants. Or the allure of the beach. Whatever the reason, Miami has secured the bottom spot – No. 50 among major U.S. cities – in new rankings of the percentage of adults who volunteer.

Nationally, the volunteer rate fell in 2007 for the second year in a row, to 26.2 percent, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is releasing its report Sunday. It showed Miami with a volunteerism rate of 14.5 percent, replacing Las Vegas in last place among major metropolitan areas. To be fair, the study found 620,000 volunteers were recruited in Miami last year, more than 60,000 over the previous year. And many local nonprofits say they have more volunteers than ever. But there’s no denying how far Miami lags behind other cities, particularly No. 1 Minneapolis-St. Paul, with a 39.3 percent rate.
The study notes that Miami’s poverty rate and average commute times are slightly higher than the national average, while other factors influencing volunteerism – home ownership and education level – are slightly lower. Robert Grimm, director of research for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), said another factor was at play, what he calls “the leaky bucket” of volunteerism. Nationally, about one in three people who volunteer in a given year do not do so the following year. In Miami, the rate is six in 10.

“There’s interest in volunteering in a lot of people but they’re just not staying with it,” Grimm said. Rapid turnover is a problem across the country, and one of the reasons the national rate dropped again in 2007 after reaching 28.8 percent in 2005. In all, 60.8 million Americans 16 and older performed roughly 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service in 2007. On the bright side, the report concluded that “volunteer intensity” is increasing, with 34 percent of volunteers contributing more than 100 hours of service in a year – the highest rate for that category since 2002. On the worrisome side were mounting concerns that economic woes – including high gasoline prices and job insecurity – would be deterrents for some would-be volunteers.

“With more people in need – losing houses, losing jobs – there are more people to serve,” said CNCS board chairman Stephen Goldsmith. “You have fewer people helping and more people needing help.” By region, the Midwest had the highest volunteer rate at 31.1 percent, followed by the West at 26.1, the South with 24.7 and the Northeast at 23.4. By state, Utah had the highest rate, 43.9 percent, followed by Nebraska, Minnesota, Alaska and Montana. Nevada had the lowest state rate, 17.7 percent; Florida and New York were the next lowest. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City and Portland, Ore., were the highest-ranked big cities, while New York City and Las Vegas were the lowest-ranked after Miami. Among 25 mid-size cities, Provo, Utah, came first with a 63 percent rate – the highest of any jurisdiction in the report. The high volunteer rates in Utah and several of its cities are attributed in part to civic-mindedness among the state’s many Mormons, but Bill Hulterstrom, president of the Provo-based United Way of Utah County, said other factors also were at work. “I believe that people here really feel like they can make a difference,” he said. “We do not wait for others to ‘fix’ our problems or neighborhoods.”

The CNCS, an independent federal agency, used Census Bureau data to determine its state and city rankings, which are based on three-year averages for 2005 through 2007. In Florida, Harve Mogul, president and CEO of the United Way of Miami-Dade, said Miami’s low ranking wasn’t surprising because of the number of new immigrants. “We have such a high number of recent immigrants who come from countries without the same organized philanthropy found in the United States,” he said. “We’ve found that as people spend more time in the United States and see the value of philanthropy and community service, they are more likely to donate their time and money.” Still, Hands on Miami, which coordinates volunteer efforts for the local United Way, reported a marked increase in the number of volunteer hours: from 58,232 in its 2006-07 tally to 70,000 in 2007-08.
Lynn Heyman, who heads the volunteer program at Miami Children’s Hospital, said she has 600 active volunteers at any given time, more than ever. But the hospital must hold orientations twice monthly to keep volunteers streaming in to replace departing ones. “I don’t think the days of people volunteering with an organization for years and years are still with us,” Heyman said.

Volunteer coordinators at other agencies point to other possible reasons. Ani Olmeda Gonzalez at Mercy Hospital said the tough economy was forcing some would-be volunteers to choose paid work instead. Charlotte Donn at YMCA of Greater Miami noted the city is home to many transients. And Cathy Agosti of VITAS Innovative Hospice Care noted what many others repeated. “Busy lives,” she said. “Busy lives.”

Matt Sedensky reported from Miami and David Crary from New York.

Mark Indig was born in New York City and lives in Los Angeles. He has spent 35 years in the motion picture industry, most recently as a Studio Executive, Producer and Production.
For this talented photographer Civilization is all about creating order out of chaos. We build structures and environments that make us feel like things are organized and safe. Those are the places he likes to shoot, by being close enough to remove the clutter and distractions around them. What’s left are the essential shapes and colors that are a universal reflection of man’s hopes, fears, successes and failures.

PanAmerican ArtProjects – Jorge Camejo & Pablo Soria, Ryder Cooley 9/13/08

Opening Reception: Saturday, Sep 13, 7 – 10
PanAmerican ArtProjects
2450 NW 2nd Ave.
Miami, 33127

Jorge Camejo & Pablo Soria
Project Room: Ryder Cooley
We are opening our new season with the works of Pablo Soria and Luis Camejo in the main gallery and Ryder Cooley in the project room.

Pablo Soria’s bucolic views of his country originate from selected fragments of his memories. His photographs of desolated landscapes and ruins of buildings show fragments of his past. Pablo is selecting and shooting these images like his memoirs.

Luis Camejo’s paintings are cityscapes, revealing his urban background. His interest in documenting the city is related to a sense of loss, a recording process aiming at preserving the past. His use of color reflects his view of deteriorated surroundings, a city in ruins.

In the project room we will be featuring the work of Ryder Cooley. Her delicate drawings seem to be inspired by her dreams and in her childhood. She has developed a very personal iconography; creating her own fantasy world.

Miami Light Project’s Filmmakers Workshop Series Presents a free screening of Southern Comfort
Saturday, September 20, 2008, 12:00pm
The Light Box, 3000 Biscayne Blvd #100, Miami, FL 33137

This moving documentary chronicles the last year in the life of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transsexual dying of ovarian cancer. We’re introduced to several people who figure prominently in Robert’s life — most importantly, Lola Cola, a transsexual who’s become Robert’s life partner and cares for him full-time. The two prepare to lead a panel at the annual Southern Comfort conference, a yearly event created for transgender individuals.

A panel discussion with Southern Comfort director Kate Davis, Lola Cola and Tobias Packer of Equality Now will follow the screening. The discussion will be moderated by Rhonda Mitrani.

This program was funded, in part, by a grant from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council.

Meeting hundreds of young, fun professionals for business contacts and friendships like you can do nowhere else
Pangaea, takes guests on a “virtual expedition.” (Nightclub.com). Meaning “all lands” in Greek, Pangaea combines elements of Asian, African, and European culture to create a “sexy and sense-heightening” (Nightclub.com) experience.

Largely inspired by African game lodges, Pangaea pays tribute to the Dark Continent with West African adobe structures, horned-animal skulls, spears and cartographic art. The shadows cast by dim candlelight across these artifacts “conveys the sense of being swept away on a nighttime safari.” (CoolJunkie.com). An elaborate outdoor fire-pit completes the allusion.

Photographs – What A Week!

What a crazy week this was.

Monday – Went to see Death Race. Recommended if you like fast cars, big explosions and hot bods.

Tuesday – was kind of a bust. Tried to go to Blue Martini in Brickell, but that place is off the list for sure now. Ended up at Red Bar for a quick drink. It’s a cute place, but was empty.

Wednesday – Thanks to our good friends over at Nefarious Girl, we got the heads up to the Ocean Drive Espanol End of Summer Party at the Intercontinental Hotel. Very much fun. Way too much Bacardi (if there is such a thing).

Thursday – Started at ArtVision Gallery for a quick view of their new opening. Then up to a birthday party for a good friend Marcelo.

Then over to Museum of Contempory Art North Miami for their Battle of the Bands. Goofy fun and yummy hot dogs from Dogma.

Friday – Got a little messy. Started with a nice little birthday dinner for our good friend Adriana at Lucky Strike. Always highly recommended. Then we slid on over Lost Weekend for a quick drink. Which turned into a lot more drinks at Blue. So much fun, but OW!

Saturday – we skipped that one.

Sunday – Another birthday party! (Count back 9 months and I think you’ll get a clue as to why there are so many birthday parties around this time.) Nicole had a fun surprise party at someone’s house in Kendall. Crazy blow up water slide and everything.

Monday – Now it is Labor Day and I am catching up on all the stuff I did not have time to do last week.

Opening Reception for State of the Union 9/20/08

State of the Union explores interdisciplinary art, addresses social and political concerns, and delves into traditional and experimental concepts in art. Margarita Benitez’s Jacquard weavings tie traditional and contemporary movements together by blending high and low technologies. Utilizing the old skill of weaving in combination with the binary frameset of the Jacquard looms and collecting subject matter from frozen video images at 1/30th of a second addresses several aspects of interdisciplinary technologies by reviewing media’s daily bombardment. Benitez introduces a social and political aspect as well intersected by her selection of media stills. The truth of the imagery allows the audience to contemplate the message the media is feeding the populous.
Opening Reception Saturday, September 20th
ArtCenter/ South Florida Gallery
800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida
On view through October 19th
