#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Perfume Perfection at Babalú

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Babalu-Perfume-Genie-Miami-Beach-Lincoln-Road-Title

We apologize for the fashion silence these past few weeks. We have been extremely busy writing about the food, travel, and culture that comes in droves in late spring. But, rest assured, we have been diligently keeping up with our local fashion happenings, amping up for Miami fashion season, and naturally thinking of you the whole time.

Latest on our radar is news from Babalú Boutique in Miami Beach – you know, the unexpected surprise beneath the stairs in the 1111 Lincoln Road building (the Herzog and De Meuron garage) that stands out with its neon lights and eclectic yet luxurious inventory. In a testament to its founders’ limitless creativity, the chic boutique recently added a cozy room to its small footprint that houses a beautiful perfume bar and an interactive tool called the Perfume Genie that helps you find your favorite fragrance. As perfume amateurs, we were intrigued by the new expansion and the unveiling of its resident magical technology so we bribed our closest friends with bubbles to come check it out with us last week. Photographs of Perez Art Museum Miami Poplife Social June Event by Mr Q 305

This past Thursday, the Pérez Art Museum (PAMM) Poplife Social featured John Hancock III whose sounds ranged from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso.

The third Thursdays Poplife Social have received a very positive response from the community and to meet the growing demand for the series, they have added pre-ticketing and more food and bar stations.

The menu items included Miso Glazed Chicken Skewers, Pork Belly Bao Buns, Grilled Mushroom Bao Buns, Shrimp Chips and Kimchee pickles.

This was the perfect way to enjoy a Thursday evening: Art galleries, live music and great food!

WK&F Group and VP Productions Travel Presents the 8th Annual Miami Takeover Experience

Like-Minded Urban Professionals Party with a Purpose
Miami, FL-The 8th Annual Miami Takeover Experience will take place in sunny South Beach from July 9-13, 2015. Attendees will enjoy seven signature events at Miami’s premiere entertainment spots. The host hotels for this year’s Takeover include the SLS South Beach, the Aloft South Beach and the Cantina Hotel & Beach Club.

Over 3,000 visitors from Pennsylvania, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia are expected to participate in Miami Takeover along with the 92,000 visitors expected in Miami that weekend. In the past, Miami Takeover has hosted notable personalities such as Trey Songz (R&B singer), Sanaa Lathan (Actress), Dave Chappelle (Comedian), Doug E. Fresh (Rapper/Celebrity Host) and MC Lyte (Celebrity DJ/Rapper), just to name a few.
“Miami Takeover is geared to provide like-minded urban professionals with a stress free getaway in the ideal vacation spot in Miami,” says Wylie Kynard, general partner of WK&F Group.

Hosted by radio personality Lorenzo “Ice T” Thomas, Miami Takeover events will take place in Miami’s most upscale spots including Mansion Nightclub, Nikki Beach, Ocean 10 and the South Beach Convention Center. Attendees will also get the opportunity to give back to the community by participating in two community outreach projects: a beach clean-up and a dental screening for kids at the Overtown Youth Foundation.

“Most people go to Miami just for the parties and nightlife but don’t necessarily learn more about the community they are visiting,” says Kynard. “Miami Takeover allows visitors and Miami natives the opportunity to enjoy Miami’s nightlife and also give back to the community all in one weekend.”

Miami Takeover is partnering with Colgate Palm Olive screening to provide 140 kids free dental screenings at the Overtown Youth Center. The screening will take place July 9. There will fun bounce houses at the dental screening along with a house emporium geared toward the kids attending.

“We want to give back to the community for allowing us to hold such great events in Miami,” says event logistic director, Dianne Walker of DeeWorks Enterprises.

The beach clean-up is presented in partnership with the Miami Beach Convention Center and the Environmental Coalition of Miami. The beach-clean up will take place Sunday, July 12th from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Both locals and visitors are welcome to volunteer to help clean up a portion of South Beach (17th-20th Avenue).
Sponsorship opportunities are also available for companies to brand themselves during Miami Takeover.

In the Lobby Lounge . . . Words 6/17/15

In the Lobby Lounge . . . WORDS!
wordsWednesday, June 17th – 6:30pm
Olympia Theater at Gusman Center
174 E. Flagler Street
Miami FL 33131

This month’s theme is ArT, which means we will be reading WORDS! about aRT . . .

. . . and we’ve got some very special words indeed!

The Blazing World, by Siri Hustvedt. Breaking down the book through fiction reading, Olympia actors will bring to life the characters of Hustvedt’s latest novel, the provocative story of artist Harriet “Harry” Burden who, after years of watching her work ignored or dismissed by critics, conducts an experiment she calls Maskings. She presents her own art behind three male masks, concealing her female identity.

Wednesday, June 17th will be our first evening focused solely on fiction, breaking down a single book, and The Blazing World, with its fractured structure and diverging perspectives, really lends itself to this approach. Raquel Roque from Books & Books in Coral Gables will be on hand with copies of the novel for sale.

Doors open at 6:00 pm and the reading starts at 6:30 pm. Cocktails available at the bar. Guided tour of the historic Olympia Theater during intermission.

This is a FREE event, open to the public.

In The Lobby Lounge . . .”WORDS! is our second foray into the wonderful world of Wednesdays in Downtown Miami,” says Olympia Theater Executive Director Robert Geitner, “bringing theatre and prose back to the Olympia on a monthly basis.” Future words-oriented evenings will include directed play readings, improv, skits & spontaneous theater, short stories, readings of excerpts from longer works of fiction, and personal monologues “in their own words.” By October 2015, the event will be scheduled the first Wednesday of every month.

Presented by the Olympia Theater
Sponsored by the Miami Downtown Development Authority
Grant funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

Photographs of the Grand Opening of OBBA Sushi in Coral Gables by Mr Q 305

It was a standing room only for the more than one hundred and fifty people who attended the opening of OBBA Sushi in Coral Gables this past Friday.

The Honorable Jim Cason, Mayor of Coral Gables presided over the cutting of the ribbon together with OBBA Sushi owners Walter Zapata and Tufic Akil. The Mayor also awarded Zapata and Akil with a Seal to City of Coral Gables based on their entrepreneurial achievements.

Once the ribbon was cut the sound of Taiko welcomed guests into the serene and well appointed dining rooms. The sushi creations coming out of the sushi bar were being consumed as soon as they were being put into the trays and the Sapporo kept flowing to the satisfaction of everyone. Definitely a great opening night!

OBBA Sushi is open and ready to make gastronomic history.

Photographs of Coral Gables Restaurant Week 2nd Annual Blogger’s Crawl by Mr Q 305

This year, the bloggers started the crawl by getting together at BULLA GASTROBAR , winner of the 2015 Taste of the Gables Award.

Bulla Gastrobar welcomed us with a choice of white or red Sangrias both of which were full of fruit flavor, talk about the perfect refreshment on a hot Florida June afternoon.

Then the tasting began…

Our sampling menu consisted of:

Salpicón de Mariscos: Grilled octopus, jumbo lump crab meat, shrimp, bell peppers, fresh lemon, oregano and olive oil. This combination of seafood flavors was simply amazing!

Huevos Bulla: Homemade potato chips, Serrano ham and potato foam drizzled with truffle oil. These eggs were just the perfect appetizer.

Bulla Sliders: Homemade garlic herb bread, beef, pork, veal, oyster mushroom patties, piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, crimini port reduction, tetilla cheese, and Portobello fries. This is actually a James Beard Foundation Burger and winner of The Taste of the Gables Award…need we say more?

By this time we were all excited and ready to continue.

Next stop on the list: BRICKTOPS right across the street.

Field Greens Salad: Mixed baby greens, tomatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and focaccia croutons with a homemade house vinaigrette.

Hearts of Romaine Caesar: Hearts of Romaine lettuce with grated parmesan and focaccia croutons with homemade Caesar dressing.

The Wedge Salad: Bib lettuce, thick cut bacon, red onion and blue cheese.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken: Pan sautéed chicken, chopped tomato, capers and lemon beurre blanc

Scottish Salmon: Salmon lightly seasoned and simply grilled. So simple and yet so good!

Prime Sirloin Meat Loaf : Meat loaf made from prime sirloin and topped with a chili sauce glaze. Quite possibly the best meat loaf we’ve ever tasted.

Baby Back Ribs: Danish Baby Back Ribs topped with chipotle barbecue sauce. The ten hour slow cooked process is evident in the meat fall off the bone/melt in your mouth texture.

OBBA SUSHI was our next destination.

They served a wonderful sushi sampler consisting of:

Crispy Canapés: Crispy rice with steamed shrimp, cilantro, scallions, sun-dried tomatoes, spicy mayo and Yuzu Oil dressing.

Yellowtail Guacamole Tartar: Yellowtail, masago, avocado, shizo, sesame, sriracha, micro greens, cucumber and ginger Yuzu.

Obba Sandwich: Shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado and chives with spicy katzu mayo.

Banana Tempura: Batter fried banana.
Then it was on to BOOKS & BOOKS CAFE where they treated us to a delicious

Shrimp Avocado Tartine: Fresh shrimp, avocado, tomato, basil pesto, garlic aioli on grilled Ciabatta. We washed down with a great-bodied Uintaite BaBa Black Lager.

Our last stop was LA TABERNA GIRALDA, a quaint Spanish style tavern. The offerings:

Croquetas Cabrales: Cabrales cheese croquettes.

Chips de Berenjenas y Miel: Eggplant Chips sprinkled with honey.

Perfecto de Solomillo de Cerdo: Roasted pork tenderloin with caramelized onion and aroma of rosemary.

It was a perfect ending to a perfect evening.

Don’t forget that Coral Gables Restaurant Week ends June 28th so you better hurry and try to capitalize on all the wonderful tastes that the City Beautiful has to offer.

The Perfect Summer Concert Outfit

Summer will be here in just a few short weeks. What do you have planned? Besides summer vacations, quality time with friends and family and reading a good book by the pool, there are also some incredible concerts to watch! Your calendar is no doubt booked solid with all of your favorite artists and now all that’s missing is the perfect concert outfit.

With so many options it’s hard to know exactly what to wear. You could go with a maxi dress, women’s sandals from Reef, a pair of jeans and cowgirl boots, or just a skirt and tee-shirt. Depending on the theme of the concert it’ll be fun to come up with an ensemble that’s comfy and stylish. Here’s an outfit that’ll work perfectly for any concert during the summer:

Button Down Blouse

A cotton blouse is perfect for warmer weather and will complement sparkly accessories and a pair of jeans. Buy one in your favorite color which can be in a baby blue, pink, or polka dot purple pattern. Pair a blouse with a tank top underneath, so if you get hot during the concert you can unbutton your blouse and just wear your tank top.

Leather Flip Flops

You can’t go wrong with women’s leather flip flops that will feel comfy when you’re walking around a lot throughout the concert evening. These durable flip flops are ideal for a variety of events and are perfect when you’re on your feet a lot as your feet won’t get sore. Leather flip flops will also go with any outfit and will look perfect with your button down blouse.

A Simple Necklace and a Lightweight Purse

Since you’re going for the simple yet chic look with your blouse and sandals, a simple necklace with a heart pendant or your name will blend well with your blouse. A lightweight purse such as a crossbody bag or wallet with a strap will work perfectly for a concert. Keep in mind you’ll want to bring a purse that won’t weigh you down but at the same time won’t get lost. If you carry a wallet with a strap you could accidentally set it down somewhere and forget about it. Don’t let that happen! Since your outfit is coming together well, all you need now is the perfect pair of jeans!

Skinny Jeans

Depending on the weather, finish off your outfit with a pair of skinny jeans or jean shorts. Look for shorts that have pockets with jewels or sequins to bring on the glam factor. It’ll all go together quite nicely. Now it’s time for the concert to begin!

About John Hancock III
John Hancock III makes tropical pop music for every season, ranging from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso. Best known as the lead singer of Miami bedroom pop pioneers ANR (Awesome New Republic), Hancock, or ‘MJ’ as he’s called by most, has produced music with multi-media artist Jillian Mayer, as well as scoring many wild works of the Borscht Film Festival. This year promises several new releases full of saccharine 60’s pop fed through an old computer, via the 10K Islands music collective.

About Pérez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) promotes artistic expression and the exchange of ideas, advancing public knowledge and appreciation of art, architecture and design, and reflecting the diverse community of its pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas. A 29-year-old South Florida institution formerly known as Miami Art Museum (MAM), Pérez Art Museum Miami opened a new building, designed by world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park on December 4, 2013. In 1891, Jamaica’s economy was in the doldrums. In response, a group of Jamaican businessmen, calling themselves the “Awakening Jamaica” committee, hired the studio of Valentine & Sons of Dundee, Scotland to create a photographic portrait of the island as a commercial and tourist paradise. Valentine & Sons, in business since 1851, was a prominent maker of landscape photographs and travel views.
This exhibition features more than 50 of these prints. Visitors will learn about the creation and impact of the images, featuring urban and rural views of the island in the late 19th century. Also on display will be archival items related to the studio of Valentine & Sons and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Photographs of Taste of the Gables by Mr Q 305

It was an eventful evening full of distinguished people/food lovers at the Westin Colonnade Coral Gables. The standing room only crowd could not wait to sample the best that the restaurants in the Gables have to offer. From Ceviche to Oxtail, there was a dish for every palate; each dish meticulously and impeccably prepared but there could only be one winner…

…and this year ‘s winner is Bulla!

Congratulations!!!

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Palms in Panama

Thanks to our Instagram, it is no secret that we love palm trees and we love Panama. Palm trees make an incredible print and they are an integral part of Miami’s iconic image. Panama is a gorgeous country and a no brainer destination for Miami locals. In the spirit of our summer, we wanted to combine both of our tropical obsessions by sharing some photos we shot during our last trip to surf Panama’s Pacific Coast.

Huge props to Hotel Playa Cambutal for being our home away from home in Panama when Miami’s as flat as an ironing board. For a surf family like ours, there is really no better place to escape to than a beautiful hotel on an empty beach with nearly year-round surf.

Astolfo Funes’s theme is “women,” but in reality, the “feminine” as an expression of a universe that belongs to humans, which he loves. Funes’ Women are concept and form, are underground issues that arise in extraordinary colors, glow encased in large black lines. The face in the foreground of one of his current series, accuses changes since the beginning of the first decade. Face emerges from the back of the fabric to penetrate the viewer’s personal life, saying you are like me, while the individualist sentiment appears exaggerated in his own connections to feelings and emotions.

Join us for his exhibition in the Artisan Lounge in Gallery 1 and 3. Free admission.

KCC Productions presents Tito Puente, Jr. at Arts Garage

Got Mambo? You will be captivated by the rhythm and beat…almost stepping back into a time capsule yet with refreshing energy that will keep you asking for more! Come to Arts Garage June 5 and 6 and enjoy the hot Latin rhythms of Tito Puente,
Jr. and His Latin Jazz Ensemble. Showtime is 8 PM.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made.

It made people happy all over the world.” He has found enthusiastic audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son — and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

His 2004 album, “In My Father’s Shoes” featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET Jazz television special of the same name. His later CD, “Got Mambo?” takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own.

Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente, Jr. and the album has received heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.

Expect an exciting evening of great music, and don’t forget your dancing shoes! Arts Garage is located at 180 NE First St in Delray Beach, phone (561) 450-6357. General admission is $25 at artsgarage.org.

Internationally Renowned Neonatologist Among Other Champions to Be Honored at The Children’s Trust Annual Award Ceremony on June 12th

Dr. Eduardo Bancalari, chief of Newborn Service at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the director of Neonatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, will receive The Children’s Trust David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award for his contributions over a 50-year medical career on Friday, June 12, 2015 at the Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom.

Together with other organizations and individuals whose extraordinary efforts have benefitted children and families in Miami-Dade County, Dr. Bancalari will be honored at the 10th annual Champions for Children Luncheon Awards Ceremony, hosted by The Children’s Trust.

Dr. Bancalari contributed to the development of one of the largest and most prestigious neonatal programs in the United States; has helped save the lives of thousands of premature newborns; and trained generations of neonatologists working worldwide.

The Children’s Trust awards ceremony honors individuals and programs for their superlative efforts on behalf of children and families. With an attendance of more than 700, this annual signature event is among the most coveted within the community of child advocates and in all of Miami-Dade County. The ceremony serves to inspire others to follow in the path of the award recipients, who include the following:

• Cecilia Seda for Excellence in Direct Service to Children and Families. A program coordinator for seven years with the Community Coalition’s Wise Kidz program, Ms. Seda has helped hundreds of children on the margins – for reasons of disability, shyness or language limitations – to feel safe and secure, able to thrive in the program, at school and in their lives.

• Liberty Academy Daycare and Preschool, 2015 Program of the Year. Converted from what was once an unsafe structure used for illicit purposes, Liberty Academy is now one of the county’s premier early childhood education facilities. Its transformation epitomizes the power of change that this state-of-the-art childcare center represents for one of Miami’s most historically under-served communities.

• Amigos For Kids Strengthens Families and Communities Program, 2015 Program of the Year. This community-based, culturally and linguistically sensitive program helps parents and caregivers break the devastating cycle of child abuse and neglect, while providing complementary support service for their children. The parenting component provides relevant, effective education and support to encourage an optimal environment to strengthen families and promote healthy well-being for all.

• Touching Miami with Love Today’s Leaders Youth Development Program, 2015 Program of the Year. This youth enrichment program supports young people in Overtown and West Homestead to develop essential life skills that buffer them from the negative influences of their communities. This innovative empowerment program supports youth as the key agents to transform communities, helping them to meet their personal goals and thereby strengthening the social fabric of the greater community.

Complete bios of each award recipient are available upon request. The Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom is located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami, FL. Reservations are $45.00 per person and a table of ten is $400. For more information or to make your reservation online, visit www.thechildrenstrust.org. The event runs from noon – 1:30 p.m.

The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.

Rent Through the Roof

Good news: Business is booming in South Florida. Bad news: housing prices are soaring. Comparitive to San Fransisco, Miami rental prices are very similar. But why? In an article published by NBC6, Jennifer Peltz summarizes a recent study conducted on rental prices across the US.

Is Rent Out of Reach? Study Shows How 11 US Cities, Including Miami, Stack Up

From Boston to Miami, New York to Los Angeles, more than half of tenants are paying what experts consider unaffordable rents, says a report by New York University’s Furman Center, which studies real estate and urban policy, and bank Capital One, which is a leading affordable-housing lender and financed the research.

While various housing experts have noted such trends, the study zooms in on 11 of the nation’s most populous cities. Overall, it’s a portrait of increasing competition and often slipping affordability, but the picture isn’t universally bleak and looks noticeably different from city to city.

“The study brings into light the limited options there are for renters,” Capital One community finance chief Laura Bailey says.

THE CITIES

The study analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data from 2006 to 2013 on the central cities of the 11 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

RENTERS ON THE RISE

As of 2013, most residents were renters in nine of the 11 cities, all except for Atlanta and Philadelphia, compared with five in 2006. At least 60 percent of residents are now tenants, rather than owners, in Boston, L.A., New York and Miami. Nationwide, about 35 percent of people rented in 2013, up from 31 percent in 2006, the Census Bureau says.

Experts trace much of the rise in renting to the 2008 mortgage and financial crisis, which left some people unable and others reluctant to own homes. And when rent becomes a stretch, leaving less income to save toward homeownership, “it’s a reinforcing cycle,” Furman Center faculty director Ingrid Gould Ellen says.

But other factors may include home-downsizing within the giant and aging baby boom generation and hefty college debt that slows some young people’s saving for a home purchase.

MORE RENTALS BUT LESS AVAILABILITY

In each city, the amount of rental housing grew faster than any rise in owner-occupied homes. In fact, the data suggest some homes were converted to rentals.

Nonetheless, the vacancy rate declined everywhere except Miami and Washington, where increases were slight. San Francisco surpassed New York for the title of tightest rental market: New York’s 3.8 percent vacancy rate was the lowest in 2006, but by 2013 San Francisco had the floor with a mere 2.5 percent. New York, L.A. and Boston were hovering around 3.5 percent. Atlanta, meanwhile, had the highest vacancy rate of the cities in the survey, at nearly 10 percent.

CLIMBING RENTS, UNEVEN BURDENS

Amid growing demand and tight supply, median rents rose faster than inflation in all the cities but Dallas and Houston, where they were nearly flat. Washington’s median rent shot up by 21 percent over the seven years, to $1,307 a month. New York’s rose by 12 percent, to $1,228. The calculation is in inflation-adjusted for 2013 dollars, includes utilities and encompasses market-rate, rent-regulated and subsidized housing.

New York has about 1 million rent-regulated apartments, perhaps helping explain why it has a lower median rent than Washington, San Francisco ($1,491) and Boston ($1,263). Meanwhile, median rents were under $1,000 everywhere else except Los Angeles ($1,182).

But rents don’t tell the whole story of affordability: Renters’ median household incomes varied widely over the years. Housing experts like to gauge affordability by the percentage of income that goes to housing costs, with anything over 29 percent being rent-burdened. Over 49 percent is considered severely burdened.

On that scale, the landscape is uneven. The percentage of rent-burdened tenants grew in six cities while dropping in the rest, and the findings were full of seeming contradictions. San Francisco had the highest median rent but the lowest percentage of rent-burdened tenants, 45 percent; Miami had a far lower median rent, but 68 percent of tenants were burdened.

One reason: San Francisco renters’ median household income was $61,200 a year, nearly 1.5 times what their Miami counterparts made.

TO SAVE ON RENT, STAY PUT

In each city, apartments that had come open within the last five years were less likely to be affordable to low- and middle-income tenants than apartments that hadn’t.
