2011 Sleepless Night Miami Beach Line-up Announced with More to Come
– Arts and culture event heats up the city from sundown to sunrise, November 5 – 6, 2011 –
Tens of thousands of cultural enthusiasts will descend upon the vibrant streets and sands of Miami Beach for a unique all-night experience during Sleepless Night, taking place November 5 – 6, 2011. This year, the festival has set its sights higher than ever, pairing remarkable quality and incredible variety by presenting an eclectic mix of more than 150 local and international artists ranging from trapeze artists, symphonies, theater and dance groups, music concerts, architectural tours, museum exhibitions, and much more at various sites across Miami Beach.
Modeled after Nuit Blanche in Paris and Montréal’s All-Nighter, the first edition of Sleepless Night in 2007 was an astounding success with rave reviews from locals and art aficionados, alike, and the second edition in 2009 drew more than 130,000 people. The City of Miami Beach provides convenient, complimentary shuttle buses between the venues for the entire duration of Sleepless Night.
The events, all of which are free, make a full range of cultural performances and venues accessible to every age and interest. The 13-hour marathon culminates with a grand finale breakfast concert on the beach.
“Sleepless Night aims to showcase the expansive range of talented artists, musicians and performers from within our own community as well as internationally to a whole new audience who may not experience them otherwise,†states Artistic Director Gary Farmer. “Each year, we have continued to expand the offerings and 2011 will present Miami residents and visitors the opportunity to experience the city’s rich arts and culture scene in a whole new way – and best of all, every event is free.â€
Highlighted artists, performances and venues include:
· New World Symphony – three free concerts, which will also be simulcast on a 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall for attendees to enjoy at its new Frank Gehry-designed home
· Project Bandaloop – the East Coast premiere of its latest multimedia aerial dance creation “IdEgo,†with live music by Dana Leong
· Sarruga – Barcelona’s favorite troupe presents the U.S. premiere of its street spectacle FISHES
· MarchFourth Marching Band – great music and wild antics from this Portland Oregon sensation
· Nicole Henry, Will Calhoun, Victor Bailey, David Gilmore and other jazz greats
· The Dream Engine – UK trapeze artist presents an outdoor “Heliosphere†performance beneath a giant helium ball
· Livio Tragtenberg – the Brazilian composer presents the U.S. premiere of his interactive “The Cabinet of Dr. Strangeâ€
· Tim Miller – the Florida premiere of his acclaimed performance piece “Lay of the Landâ€

· Bass Museum of Art Reflecting Pool, 2121 Park Avenue – Juraj Kojs: “Sleepless Muscles†6:00 p.m. – Midnight; and “Slovakia†6:30 p.m. – “Sleepless Muscles†is a new muscle-powered multimedia installation that uses the kinetic energy of a performer riding a bicycle to power various audio-visual electronics. “Slovakia†is a 35-minute program that combines Slovakian folk instruments and experimental electronica. Dramatic rituals and powerful music will transport you to the mysterious world filled with ancient calls and voices. Juraj Kojs is a Slovakian composer, performer, multimedia artist, producer, and educator residing in the US. · Bass Museum of Art, 2100 Collins Avenue: Marco Brambilla video “Civilization†6:00 p.m. – Midnight; Artist Talk 7:00 p.m. – “CIVILIZATION (Megaplex)†is an epic video mural containing 300 individual channels of looped video blended into a multi-layered seamless tableau of interconnecting images that illustrate a contemporary and often satirical take on the concepts heaven and hell. The work depicts a metaphysical journey from hell to heaven as represented by computer-altered found footage sampled from films both mainstream and obscure.
Marco Brambilla studied film at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, and then worked in commercials and feature films, directing the successful 1993 science fiction film Demolition Man. In 1998, he shifted his focus to video and photography projects as an artist and filmmaker. His work has been exhibited internationally at such institutions as the Kunsthalle Bern, screened at the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, and can be found in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the ARCO Foundation in Madrid, amongst others. Brambilla has been awarded both the Tiffany Comfort Foundation and Colbert Foundation awards for his video installations. He was born in Milan, Italy, and currently lives and works in New York and Los Angeles.

Laurent Grasso: He often explores shifting and multiple temporalities in his conceptual art practice. For his project at the Bass Museum of Art, Grasso selects and juxtaposes historical works from our permanent with his own series of paintings, sculptures, videos and neons to form unexpected connections that become reflections on the past from a contemporary viewpoint.
Egyptian Gallery: On exhibit from the museum’s permanent collection are the inner and outer sarcophagi and mummy. Additionally, there are thirteen objects of Egyptian antiquity including a gift to the museum and long-term loans from the Brooklyn Museum, Lowe Art Museum and Private Collections.
Apulian Vessels Gallery: The Bass Museum is proud to announce its acquisition of two Apulian red-figured vessels from the Estate of Daniel P. S. Paul, now permanently housed in the Peter E. and Annemarie H. Houghton Gallery. The harpsichord cadenza in the first movement of concerto #5 sounds like some crazy improvisation from a rock band. · South Florida premiere of Tim Miller’s “Lay of the Land,†10:00 p.m. – Internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller explores the artistic, spiritual and political topography of his identity as a gay man. Hailed by the New York Times for his “lean, personal and deceptively canny shows,†he has performed throughout North America, Australia and Europe in such prestigious venues as Yale Repertory Theater, London’s Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
He is the author of the books SHIRTS & SKINS, BODY BLOWS and the Lambda Award-winning 1001 BEDS, and his solo theater works have been published in the collections O Solo Homo and Sharing the Delirium. · German Consulate in Miami presents Vocaldente and the German Academic All Stars jazz quartet,
7:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Founded in 2004 by members of the Hannover Boys Choir and the Hannover University of Music and Drama, Vocaldente has evolved in just five years from passionate suburb singers to virtuosic vocal globetrotters. At more than 100 shows, performances and concerts in the past year, the five committed singers have explored their home country Germany as well as wider Europe; extensive tours and fleeting trips have led them numerous times to the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. The German Academic All Stars are an impromptu ensemble consisting of present grantees and alumni of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Fulbright Scholarship Program (CIES) who were selected from among the best students of Germany’s renowned music colleges in a national competition. Covering a broad range of styles – from
traditional jazz to bebop and new music – the All Stars exclusively play their own original compositions and those of former All Stars. · Batuke Samba Funk Band and the Paolo Gualano Dancers and Drummers, 11:30 p.m. – Batuke Samba Funk, the creation of Miami’s Diogo Oliveira, offers a fusion of Brazilian rhythms including samba and samba rock with classic American funk. · Lincoln Road at Washington Avenue: Tigertail presents the U.S. premiere of Livio Tragtenberg’s interactive installation/performance “The Cabinet of Dr. Strange,†6:00 p.m. – Midnight. – The Cabinet of Dr. Strange is a video sound performance created for urban environments by award-winning composer and artist Livio Tragtenberg. The purpose of the piece is to create an ironic situation regarding the presence of art and the artist in the contemporary world. It will be making its North American premiere at Sleepless Night 2011. On the side of the cage it says, “Please feed the composer with images and sounds. The composer is an extinct animal. Come and share your sound problems with Dr. Strange. Dr. Strange will solve your sound problems.” Inside a cage, the performer establishes a special relationship with the audience by using an open microphone. The audience is free to sing, scream, etc… into the microphone. Dr. Strange then processes these sounds within seconds. The piece establishes a dialogue of humor, irony and surprise. The Cabinet of Dr. Strange premiered at 29th International Bienal of São Paulo in 2010.

Project Bandaloop presents “Bound(less)†with live score by Dana Leong courtesy of Miami Light Project, 11:00 p.m. – Since 1991, Project Bandaloop has been creating vertical, horizontal and aerial dance that shakes up how people perceive the environment and the art form. Project Bandaloop performs in natural and urban settings to large and diverse audiences both nationally and internationally, in theaters, on buildings, towers, bridges and skyscrapers, and in the mountains. The company, under the artistic direction of Amelia Rudolph, creates a blend of dance, sport, ritual and environmental awareness. The work explores the relationship between movement and gravity and stimulates the audience’s awareness of the natural and built environments. Bound(less) is a large-scale vertical dance that explores how we imagine and construct the meaning of our identity as it is forged through human interactions and interactions with our environment. Bound(less) looks at our internal and collaborative sense of self through moments that reveal our vulnerability and longing and group choreography that brings to life the tensions and power of communal action. Physical metaphors including a single dress worn by three women and a tethered group dance are woven with intimate moments of movement and text into a dynamic aerial work.

“Please Don’t Hate Me†is a series of transdisciplinary performances and events conceived by dance theater artist Octavio Campos and Camposition. Inspired by the hate that rips at the fabric of homes, communities and the world, each performance points to exquisitely artistic, yet provocative, solutions – expressed by a mash up of Miami-centric dance theater productions and site-specific performance installations. The intent of PDHM is for its resulting artworks to promote unity in South Florida by transforming INTOLERANCE into ACCEPTANCE and to challenge EVERYBODY to find the ACTIONIST within themselves to create a catalyst for social change. “Deconstructing Cinema,†1:00 a.m.
Inspired by the work of great filmmakers and their masterpieces, visual artist Erwin Georgi (aka Buzzeye) and composer/sound artist Gabriel Pulido (aka Gabo) combine their original material with fragmented movie pieces, reassembling them in a unique live media collage. The Miami Herald called Buzzeye’s work “an acid-trip light show that’s simultaneously riveting and hard to watch, sort of like a good first date.†Buzzeye and Gabo have collaborated on audiovisual work for New York’s Big Screen Project, and have performed live at the Standard, Alliance Francaise, and at New World Symphony Friends events. “WOODEN SYNAGOGUES OF POLAND & THE FLORIDA CONNECTION†Since the 8th century, Jews lived in Poland. During World War I and World War II, 3.5 million Jews lived in the Polish Republic in shtetls (small Jewish towns or villages in Eastern Europe) and built wooden syngogues that represent Jewish folk art. During World War II, the Nazis wiped out the Jewish population and destroyed these early wooden synagogues that were monuments of Jewish culture.
Some synagogues built in the 19th and 20th century have been found in Poland and what is now Lithuania and are in deteriorated conditions. Englishman Peter Maurice studied 17th-18th century Polish wooden synagogues, and made models of 10 of these synagogues as he was coping with an incurable illness.
Before his death, he searched worldwide for the best “home†for his passionate handwork. After visiting the Jewish Museum of Florida, he donated his models to us. This is perhaps the only such collection in the U.S., and represents the homeland for 80% of American Jews, many in Florida. To tell the expanded story, the Museum makes a Florida connection using photographs and artifacts from Floridian Jews whose origins are from Polish shtetls.
“RABBI IRVING LEHRMAN: HIS LIFE & ART†Rabbi Irving Lehrman served as the spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El on Miami Beach for more than 50 years. He had a huge impact on the Greater Miami and Florida Jewish community. A founding member of the cutting-edge flamenco group Ketama, Antonio Carmona has long been one of the genre’s leading artists for new and inventive ideas. Known for its willingness to incorporate nontraditional influences like salsa, hip-hop and jazz, Ketama was among the first to bring the music of its native Spain to world music listeners. Ketama was also known for its virtuostic guitar mastery and extremely tight vocal harmonies. Coming from a family of musicians four generations deep, and having begun his performance career at a very young age, Carmona has the pedigree and experience of a flamenco master. In addition to being a guitarist and vocalist, he is credited with being one of his country’s finest percussionists, and he introduced the use of the Peruvian cajon (a wooden box instrument) into Flamenco music. Carmona released his debut solo recording, Vengo Venenoso, in 2006, featuring the participation of Juanes, Alejandro Sanz and la Mala Rodriguez. Sarruga’s “Fishes†8:00 p.m. – The Barcelona-based street theater troupe SARRUGA was founded in 1994 when schoolteacher Pakito Gutierrez noticed the peculiar, machine-like movements of insects and thought it would be cool to recreate them on a giant scale. The resulting INSECTOS wowed audiences. The people-powered machines, accompanied by electronic music and lighting and pyrotechnical effects, transformed the familiar world of the streets into the spectacular realm of fantasy. The giant bugs were followed by fishes and dragons, and Sarruga has played to enormous crowds in the streets of Europe, Israel and South America ever since. Pakito and company made their United States debut in July 2010, presenting INSECTS in Chicago’s Millennium Park and, for the very first time, in an indoor show here in the Miami Beach Convention Center. The Dream Engine’s “Heliosphere,†three performances 8:45 p.m., 11:45 p.m., and 1:45 a.m. – The Dream Engine was created back in 1995 to dream up the extraordinary and bring it to life. The “Heliosphere†performance is extraordinary indeed: using, music, lighting and location, the Heliosphere creates the illusion of flying. The impossible becomes the possible. Spiraling and spinning and seemingly weightless, an acrobat suspended beneath a helium balloon explores the uncharted space between the beach and the sky. Two ground crew, harnessed to lines but largely unseen, control the balloon’s speed, direction and altitude. · The Palace, 1200 Ocean Drive, “Drag’s Gone Wild,†6:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. – Two different shows: the first is kicked off with the fabulous Tiffany Fantasia, who has been performing at the Palace for seven years, and will feature Noel Leon with her multiple characters and other fierceness Ladies; then at 10:30 the second shows starts with Missy Mieyaki and Latrice Royal and others. Bellino, whose book “You Have Three Minutes†chronicles his successful business deal with Donald Trump. The Deal Maker turned Art Maker uses recycled coffee capsules to create “Pixtures†– 6.5-foot-square celebrity portraits that reinterpret our world of digitized images.
