The time has come again to celebrate one of Miami’s most beloved literary events: The Big Read. Powered by the National Endowment for the Arts, this community shared reading program will feature events inspired by the novel When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka. The Center for Writing and Literature @ Miami Dade College (The Center @ MDC) is kicking off The Big Read.

In When the Emperor Was Divine, Otsuka addresses themes of race, identity, loyalty and patriotism. In her sparse, beautiful prose she quietly reveals the ugly underbelly of being “other” in a country which both embraces and rejects its immigrant self.

All participants will receive a copy of When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka.

We welcome Boys Noize back to Grand Central.

Alex Ridha – better known to the world as Boys Noize – has been making electronic music and working as a DJ for over half of his life.
He established himself as one of the world’s preeminent wizards behind the decks, having played the world’s biggest stages alongside the biggest names in dance music.
His sets are equally uplifting, not only technically but also as a showman, leaving unforgettable experiences for the witnesses. One of the reasons why the Rolling Stone voted Boys Noize amongst the Top10 `DJs who rule the earth` in 2012.

As a recording artist and producer, Ridha has created his own sound, and pioneered his own brand, amassing a formidable body of work in the process.
He has released three albums (2007’s Oi Oi Oi , 2009’s Power and 2012´s Out Of The Black) and countless singles as Boys Noize, as well as doing profoundly influential work as a remixer and producer for everyone from Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Feist, David Lynch to Jarvis Cocker, Santigold, Scissor Sisters and Chilly Gonzales.

He has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, genius film maker Mr. Oizo (on a project called Handbraekes), Erol Alkan, and most recently Skrillex (under the moniker of Dog Blood) and won Beatport’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ 3 years in a row.

Ridha is also the heart of Boysnoize Records, the label that he started back in 2005. Founded originally as a means to get his own music out into the world, Boysnoize Rec.—and it’s sub-label, BNR Trax—is now home to more than a dozen artists (including up-and-comers like 18-year old SCNTST, Le1f, Spank Rock, Strip Steve, Peaches and Siriusmo) and responsible for over 100 releases while remaining fully independent.
“I don´t compromise when it comes to music,” says Ridha. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label”

Despite his ever-expanding label roster and the increased demand for his time as a producer and remixer, Ridha’s primary loves continue to be the twin pursuits of making and performing music.
Following the release of his third long-player Out Of The Black in late 2012, he presented the first Boys Noize ‘Live’ show to the masses.
“I really wanted to give people a concert where I perform my music only. It´s not that I don´t like DJing anymore, I´m a DJ to the bone and will always be. But playing my tracks live and putting on a completely new show was something I wanted to do for a long time. It´s different and fresh and that is what I love.”

Photographs of Art Basel Week Monday 12/1/14

Art Basel Week on Monday, December 1, 2014. Spent most of the day setting up our Life Is Art booth at Spectrum Miami. Started at Ping Pong kickoff at the Alfrd I. Dupont Building with very interesting cutting edge work. Popped right across the street to the White Building for Michele Fontaniere Pop Up Gallery honoring the Foundation Of The Americas 21st Anniversary Celebration. Next stop was the Design District for Miami Magazine Celebrate Art Week Miami with LEBO. Stopped in for the Spinello opening of The Magic of Kris Knight. Next on the list was something completely different with the Pop-Up Street Art Exhibition to Celebrate Miami Marine Stadium, an international gathering of some of the most amazing street artists. Lastly, we finally made it to the private exhibition opening of ARTECHO. TECHO is a fabulous, youth-led non-profit that fights homelessness and poverty in Latin America.

Art , Food , Music!

Art exists in various forms. Some use a single haired brush to shade the eyelashes on a portrait. Some arbitrarily splatter paint across a canvas. Some put a giant fucking sea creature in a tank and freeze it in time. And then some choose to mix frequencies created by synthesizers with rhythms made by drum machines, all with the intention to dance for hours and hours, and be transported to another mindset.

So, for Art Basel 2014, we celebrate this form of art with an all day long musical exposition at STEAM in Miami’s heart of Downtown. There will be live art painting. There will be sensory overloading food. And, of course, there will be techno. So leave your turtle-necked, horn-rimmed glasses wearing, contemporary art blog reading friends at the expo center (or bring them) and come celebrate one of the most important forms of art with us.

The third edition of the Miami River Art Fair, an international, contemporary art fair, will take place at the Downtown Miami Convention Center inside the James L. Knight International Center.

This art fair was conceived as a showcase of world-class artists and galleries in an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall. This grand show space overlooks the one-of-a-kind outdoor Riverwalk Sculpture Mall that will feature monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River.

MRAF is providing a unique fair-going experience during the art fair season as the only waterfront art fair. Miami River Art Fair is featuring both an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall of the Miami Convention Center and the one-of-a-kind Riverwalk Sculpture Mall, which is featuring monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River with a presence of monumental sculptures from Italy, France, Cuba, Colombia, Korea, Spain and a special presentation from Mexico.

The Miami River Art Fair will feature galleries and projects with artists from all around the globe.

The Miami River Art Fair paves the way for the arts in our financial district as the pioneer art fair of the Downtown Miami – Brickell areas during the winter art fair season. The City of Miami welcomes the Miami River Art Fair as a herald for the revitalization of the Lower Miami River district, the city’s waterfront destination of the twenty-first century.

Please join us as we celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Miami River Art Fair and the Opening Night Preview on December 4. Guests will enjoy Italian Limited Edition Organic Wine and exclusive performance uniquely created for the evening.

Funds raised at the event support the Little Dreams Foundation who was established by Orianne and Phil Collins in February 2000. Its mission is to fulfill the dreams of young aspiring talent without the means to achieve their goals.

Special Collectors’ Preview: December 4th, 4:00 – 6:00pm, $200 per guest. The exclusive first opportunity to preview and purchase works of art at the fair. Guests are also invited to stay for the Opening Night Preview from 6:00 – 11:00 pm.

Life and Death in ART BASEL by PL0T & Poplife
Officially Hosted by “Aquabooty”

From December 4th through December 7th Miami will host the 13th annual edition of Art Basel; one of the biggest and most important art gatherings worldwide. Over the past 3 years a unique response has grown for Art Basel within a very select group of artists and labels from the music industry who know about quality; making this the showcasing home and most influential period for Electronic Music in Miami in our opinion. Made for those who know.

Life and Death and PL0T have been pioneering this movement and its 3rd showcase is coming up. On Thursday December 4th, after their very successful second encounter during Art Basel 2014, PL0T will team up with its acclaimed partner label LIFE AND DEATH; and for the first time ever they will join forces with long time Miami Indie trailblazers from POPLIFE. Together they will bring to life the third edition of their Art Basel series of events. Starring Dixon, Mind Against, Thugfucker, Vaal (US Debut), DJ Tennis, Bob Moses and Recondite LIVE. The event will be hosted by “Aquabooty”, Dixon’ s long time promoter in the Miami scene.

After a very booming year and improbable events in the universe Life and Death returns to its beloved Miami, colluding with PL0T and Poplife to challenge themselves upon the creation of a materialized encounter, and sliding us through their diverse worlds blazing between life and death. Based on the vision of bringing the puzzling and undisguised sounds of the label to full sensory dimension, this 10 hour affair shall not resemble a conventional club night nor yet another label showcase. This year with a distinct and noteworthy twist to it… they will be welcoming INNERVISIONS own DIXON as their first special guest, and debuting the label’s star VAAL, alongside the already unshakable label legends. Expect mind-boggling music, Life and Death’s distinct art direction and a physical transformation of Grand Central and The Garret’s performance areas, all of which will be equipped with cutting edge sound, including the club’s own custom Adamson Sound System, to ensure that patrons and art aficionados alike will enjoy the full spectrum of this exquisite multi-sensory experience.

City Theatre will serve up a sizzling series of Florida-inspired short plays entitled Swamp Shorts on Monday, November 17 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Miami Book Fair International’s newest attraction The Swamp.

The Swamp is a pop-up lounge (think Jimbo’s meets the Delano) that showcases Florida stories, music, dance, film, history, and art. All week long, Swamp events exploring the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness, and downright “weirdness” of life in Florida will be offered free of charge.

As a partner of Miami Book Fair International and the Center for Theatre and Literature at Miami Dade College, City Theatre was asked to solicit and curate a selection of shorts plays that align with The Swamp’s mission to reflect the personalities that animate Florida’s, and specifically Miami’s, cultural scene. A call for scripts was sent to homegrown playwrights, resulting in City Theatre’s Swamp Shorts, a vibrant one-night-only collection of readings of new short plays written by South Florida playwrights near and far, that celebrate the stories, characters, patois and sabor of the local community and Sunshine State.

Directed by City Theatre Guest Artist Gail Garrison, Swamp Shorts will be performed by The Swamp Troupe Acting Ensemble: Joshua Jean Baptiste, Ashley Chang, Chasity Hart, Andres Maldonado, David Kwiat, Jessica Brooke Sandford, Karen Stephens and Michael Uribe.

The Swamp Shorts play line-up includes:

Risen from the Dough by France-Luce Benson
Two Haitian sisters own a local bakery and learn that running a business in Miami is more than they expected.

Hey Girl by Jessica Farr
An encounter between a woman and a man waiting for a bus goes bad. Very bad.

Sand and Sam by Lauren Feldman
A woman mourning the death of a grandparent gets an assist from an understanding rabbi and a helpful gravedigger.

The Crocodile’s Bite by Vanessa Garcia
Four characters, all immigrants to the city, connect and collide one night in Miami.

A Pair of Miami Monologues by Gail Garrisan
A South Florida perspective on how to get from here to there, and how to look the part.

Roof by Ricky J. Martinez
A scene from a new full-length play set on a rooftop overlooking Biscayne Blvd.

Swamp Girl by Marj O’Neill-Butler
A South Florida single who’s more comfortable clubbing, considers an invitation for a blind date to the Everglades.

Two of the region’s literary disrupters combine to present this free event from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17 at The Swamp, located in the big tent at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus on the southeast corner of NE Third Street and Second Avenue. Craft beers, food trucks and fun take place on The Swamp Porch prior to and following Swamp Shorts. Free parking is available in the adjacent garage.

There is no doubt that the screenplay is an essential piece in the creation of a film. It is an important Foundation constructed from words, surrounding the organization of distinct cinematographic elements to cultivate the future spectator of the movie. For this reason, two prominent screen writers and directors, León Ichaso (Bitter Sugar, Piñero El Cantante) and Joe Cardona (Café con Leche, Jose Marti: Legacy of Freedom, Celia: The Queen), converse about the occupation of screenwriting. This panel will be moderated by Orlando Rojas, screenwriter, film director and programmer for the Tower Cinema of Miami Dade College.

CreativeMornings/Miami: CHANCE!
chanceNovember 14, 8:30am – 10:00am
Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD)
100 NE 1st Ave
Miami, Florida 33132

Take a CHANCE ! Taking a chance is at the heart of every CreativeMornings chapter. It’s a chance the organizers take to start their own chapter, the chance a speaker takes to share their story and, of course, the chance the attendees take to get up early in the morning and listen.

This November, we’re celebrating those uncertainties and risks with the theme of Chance and our speaker Robin Hill, photographer for architecture and design.

2014 begins my 28th year as a professional photographer. Back in 2006 I had the good fortune of spending a few hours with my hero, Julius Shulman at the opening of the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. He was 96 years old and still working and was in his 7th decade as a photographer which always helps to give me some perspective. (which as an Architectural Photographer is a very handy thing!) I’m deeply passionate about my chosen field and strongly believe in the power of design to affect our lives in a profound way. I see myself as being an integral part of the design community and my tool is photography. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some of the top names in the field, and much of the force of their creative work is displayed throughout the website.

Limited to approximately 30 carefully selected dealers, the fair has been designed as a sophisticated, elegant waterfront oasis for collectors during the frenetic Art Basel Week. The fair is located within the downtown Arts & Entertainment District, adjacent to the Perez Art Museum Miami and the Frost Museum, two of Miami’s most prestigious visual arts institutions, and in proximity to all major downtown hotels and Brickell World Plaza, one of the largest banking centers in North America. Concept will be open until 10pm each night, giving visitors additional time to view the artwork after other December fairs close, and operating on a schedule more conducive to Miami’s relaxed atmosphere, later dining hours and vibrant nightlife.

Opening Tuesday, December 2
On view: December 2, 2014 – April 19, 2015
Open to the public – general museum admission

R.R. and the Expansion of the Tropics is a project developed by Mexico City-based artist Mario Garcia Torres (b.1975, Monclova, Mexico) specifically for the Pérez Art Museum Miami in which a number of seemingly unrelated subjects such as Robert Rauschenberg, climate change and Florida are threaded together to form a series of conceptual and political questions. Garcia Torres has long been interested in exploring little-known issues within recent art history and in addressing parallel subjects that find new meanings and contexts through his careful juxtapositions. This project will create a number of gestures, including photographic documentation, film, music and other types of information displays.
Project Gallery: Mario Garcia Torres is organized by Pérez Art Museum Miami Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander.

Christie’s and JW Marriott Present Warhol Pops Up In Miami 12/3/14-12/4/14

Christie’s and JW Marriott Present Warhol Pops Up In Miami
Wednesday, December 3rd and Thursday, December 4th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
warholJW Marriott Marquis
255 Biscayne Boulevard Way
Miami, Florida 33131
Exhibit Is Open To The Public And Free Of Charge

Christie’s, JW Marriott® Hotels & Resorts, and JW Marriott Marquis Miami are pleased to announce a pop-up art sale at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, which will be the first time original art will be available for purchase at a JW Marriott property.
The unique selling event, which will be held December 3-4 on the hotel’s fifth floor, will coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach 2014. The public is welcome to view the exhibit free-of-charge.

The exhibit is part of Andy Warhol at Christie’s, a multi-year, multi-platform partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. A curated group of more than 20 paintings, photographs, prints, and works on paper, many of which have never been seen before and with price points ranging from $3,000 to $50,000, will be available for sale to the public and hotel guests.

“This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire original works by Andy Warhol that come directly from Warhol’s collection – he’s the only person who has owned it. Collectors have the added bonus that proceeds of the sales benefit The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts’ grant-making initiatives,” comments Amelia Manderscheid, Associate Vice President, Specialist, Warhol Private Sales.

As with all sales in Andy Warhol at Christie’s—including live auctions, online-only auctions, and private sales — all works are drawn from the collection of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, with proceeds benefitting the Foundation’s grant-making programs.

db Bistro Moderne Miami, Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant located within the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, will also pay homage to Warhol during the week with dishes and cocktails inspired by the artist’s works. Chef Boulud – who cooked for Warhol himself in the 1980s in NYC – Executive Chef Jason Pringle, and Pastry Chef Jerome Maure channel their creativity on the chefs’ canvas, the plate. Guests who visit the gallery may bring their ticket to db Bistro to redeem a complimentary Warhol-inspired cocktail from December 2-7. Cocktails include:

POP ART: red wine, coke, lime juice, served in a Campbell’s soup can; VELVET UNDERGROUND: gin, St. Germaine, banana, sparking wine, hibiscus; CANDY DARLING: white wine, ginger liqueur, soda, mint ice ball.

As the official hotel partner of Art Basel, Design Miami, Art Miami, and the Perez Art Museum, the JW Marriott Marquis Miami is immersed in the growing art scene already present in the city. Besides its more than $250,000 in sponsorships, and its support of other arts organizations such as the Miami International Symphony Orchestra, Florida Grand Opera, and others, the hotel and JW Marriott brand boast a strategic partnership with Christie’s, the world’s leading art auction house. The partnership began during Art Basel 2010 when the hotel featured a popular exhibition of Post-War and Contemporary highlights which included pieces from artists such as Andy Warhol, Antony Gormley, and Damien Hirst. The hotel also houses a museum-caliber art collection worth more than $1 million, called the Art of Reinvention.

“We are excited to partner with Christie’s Auction House for the fifth consecutive year during Art Basel. This unique art event celebrating the remarkable works of one of America’s most important art showmen while supporting the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will be a must see for Art Basel visitors and local art enthusiasts,” said Florencia Tabeni, General Manager, JW Marriott Marquis Miami.

The exhibit will be launched at an invitation-only lunch and panel discussion titled ‘Disruptors: Thinking Outside the Box’ on Tuesday, December 2nd. Confirmed panelists include Daniel Boulud, chef-owner of DB Bistro, Eric Chang, co-founder and designer for Hellman-Chang furniture, Matthew Von Ertfelda, vice president Insight, Strategy + Innovation at Marriott International, Amelia Manderscheid, Christie’s Andy Warhol expert, and Eric Shiner, Director, Andy Warhol Museum. MIAMI magazine is the official media partner and moderator for the panel.

The nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), a program of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture, will celebrate its 31st edition this year.

New to the Fair this year will be Playtime, an international children’s theatre festival presented by Teatro Prometeo, and The Swamp, a pop-up lounge featuring live music and writers whose works explore the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness and weirdness of life in the Sunshine State. Both are made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.

The Book Fair this year will feature 6WordsMiami, a community project where all are invited to submit their six-word stories. Whether it’s a memoir, fiction, fantasy or other – all submissions are welcome, though the Fair hopes some are inspired by Miami life. A 6WordsMiami reading will take place at the Book Fair. Some stories will be paired up with original photography and published in a limited-edition postcard set. Submissions will be accepted in English, Spanish or Creole. There is no limit to how many stories one can submit. Submission dates are June 15 through October 1 at 6wordsmiami@gmail.com and through social media using the hashtag #6WordsMiami.

The Miami Book Fair, one of Miami’s flagship cultural events, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, literacy and learning activities for children and teens during Generation Genius Days, and The Kitchen, demos and panels for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute. Fairgoers will also enjoy more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere and hundreds of authors reading and discussing new books during the weekend Street Fair.

Miami Book Fair International 2014 promises to be another exceptional literary event!

The International Network of Social Journalism (INSJ) in partnership with Nina Torres Fine Art presents: ART & ENVIRONMENT: A CONVERSATION. The event will be an intimate look at how art can create awareness of the environment and how we live.

Participating in the panel will be world-renowned artist Ruben Santurian, environmental champions Luiz Rodrigues, executive director of ECOMB (Enviromental Coalition of Miami and Beaches) and Cinema Green and Brett Bibeau, Managing Director of the Miami River Commission. Nina Torres will be moderating.

INSJ is an organization that operates in the field of social communication and human development. Society, Culture and Heritage, New Technologies, Environment, Children’s Rights, Domestic Violence and HIV and AIDS are some of the topics that have been developed from the perspective of communication as a central focus. Their goal is to improve media coverage, bring awareness to social issues, and to create forums that encourage discussion, reflection and participation. ISNJ also develops and promotes curricula at all levels of training, ensuring greater social awareness and participation by raising the sense of responsibility all stakeholders.

“We wanted to create a space in which we can explore the relationship between art and the environment. To have an artists, a gallery owners and the directors of two of Miami’s most active environmental organization, is the perfect combination for a productive and thought-provoking exchange of ideas.” Explained Horacion Knaeber, Director of INSJ.
Art as a vehicle to create consciousness of the environment as a living space is not a strange concept for our panelists. Ruben Santurian is a world-renowned artist who is now launching his latest series: Trashformers – which are sculptures made of trash and recyclable materials in the shape of who will be speaking about the relationship between men and nature through art. His new series Trashformers will be showcased at Nina Torres Fine Art.
The program will start with a introduction by gallery owner Nina Torres, who will touch on Art as a tool of raising awareness; Brett Bibeau, from the Miami River Commission will talk about the Miami River, its ecological challenges, and its relationship with the Miami River Fair. Luiz Rodrigues from ECOMB will discuss the mission of the organization, its challenges and Cinema Green.

The Cleveland Orchestra opens its 2014-15 Miami season with Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez, Rodrigo’s concerto is elegant, distinctively Spanish. It is arguably the best known composition for guitar, thanks in no small part to the extraordinary beauty of its central Adagio.
Award-winning classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins the Orchestra for these concerts. “Karadaglić is a guitarist of superior musical and technical gifts who allows his personality to sing through the music with taste and intelligence.” (The Guardian)

This year’s event will be held at Downtown Miami’s spectacular Historic Alfred I. Dupont Building, truly one of South Florida’s premiere event spaces.

Sponsor Bacardi will supply their repertoire of brands including Grey Goose and Bombay Sapphire at double the bars of last year’s event (to help keep lines short — we heard your requests!). Prices at cash bars will range from $4 for nonalcoholic beverages, to $6 for well drinks or Hatuey Beer, and $8 for drinks mixed with top-shelf spirits.

On top of it all, this year’s VIP section will be set up inside the building’s spooky vacant bank vault complete with OPEN BAR, and for everyone else there will be undead “bank tellers” serving up your favorite drinks! AND, TRACY YOUNG is back by popular demand this year spinning your favorite dance and electronic tunes with the assist from retro-flavored DJ Bill James along with three DJs new to the Halloween Ball: Alex Ramos, Carlos Rojas, and Maximus 3000!

For your convenience, we are happy to offer valet parking at the event for $15. If the valet isn’t for you, there are parking lots for $5-$7 surrounding the venue. And of course, if you want to skip driving altogether, the event is located very close to Metrorail and Metromover connections (but remember, the Metro stops running at midnight and doesn’t reopen til 5AM — so if you come this way, plan to get a ride home!).

In 2014 we’ve given it all for equality, and that goes for the Halloween Ball, too. We’ve revamped and reloaded — and the only thing we’re missing to make the night truly terrifying is YOU!

Emerge Miami’s 100th Bike Ride: Celebrate Diversity Miami, will be rolling through local communities on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, giving people a unique opportunity to learn more about several of our culturally diverse neighborhoods, and to connect with fellow greater Miami residents in a fun and interactive way.

More than 100 cyclists are expected to attend this family-friendly event that will be kicking off Celebrate Diversity Miami, a new large-scale community engagement initiative that aims to promote a deepened sense of connectivity between the culturally and ethnically diverse communities of greater Miami. The group, departing from Government Center in downtown Miami, will visit Overtown, Liberty City, and Little Haiti before concluding with a celebratory picnic at the beautiful, waterfront Museum Park, which recently opened up to the public this summer.

Along the way, riders will first stop by Overtown’s Dorsey Park, where URGENT, Inc. has been working on several mural projects documenting the rich history of that community. The second stop is at the MCI KaBoom Playground in Liberty City, where the Miami Children’s Initiative has been taking a block-by-block approach to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the potential of every child. Then riders will make a third stop in Little Haiti to experience the Little Haiti Cultural Center’s recently opened Caribbean Marketplace, an entertainment venue for showcasing arts & crafts, culture, and food. Finally, everyone will make their way over to Museum Park, and come together to celebrate Emerge Miami’s 100th ride milestone.

Emerge Miami and Celebrate Diversity Miami are proud to have the enthusiastic support of the Urban Renewal Greater Enhancement National Team (URGENT), Inc., Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI), and Little Haiti Cultural Center.

More information on the participating organizations is available at www.emergemiami.com and www.facebook.com/CelebrateDiversityMiami. Friends of St. Jude (FOSJ) Miami, the young professionals group dedicated to raising awareness and funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, and chaired by Jeb Bush Jr., invites the South Florida community to the seventh annual International Dermatology “It’s All About the Kids” event, presented by the Andrés Asion Foundation.

“We are excited to host another successful event, to ensure children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases can receive the treatment and care they need,” said Jeb Bush Jr., chair of FOSJ. “Thanks to our partners and South Florida’s ongoing support, Friends of St. Jude has raised more than $600,000 to help ensure no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude for their treatment, travel, housing or food.”

The event will feature a tasting menu and cocktails, as well as music performances by The Culture Band and DJ Troubles. This year’s hosts include award-winning journalist and anchor of Univision Network’s news-magazine show Primer Impacto Pamela Silva Conde and recording artist Jencarlos Canela.

“I’ve had the pleasure to witness first-hand, the great work that St. Jude does for their patients and their families,” said Silvia Trinidad, from International Dermatology Research. “I am wholeheartedly committed to St. Jude and their tireless work in the advancements of cancer research and treatment for the children.”

“In many cases, St. Jude is the last hope for children suffering from cancer, who have previously not responded well to standard treatments, because St. Jude is where doctors send their toughest cases as the hospital has the world’s best survival rates for the most aggressive childhood cancers”, said Andres Asion. “They are at the forefront of developing new treatment options that are then shared freely with hospitals around the world.”

International Dermatology will serve as the event’s title sponsor for the sixth consecutive year. Other sponsors include: Andres Asion Foundation, Stephan Gutierrez, Walmart, The Honorable & Mrs. Carlos Gutierrez and Family, Rana Furniture, LAAD, Richmond Global, Erik Fresen, Academica, Comcast, Cesar & Pamela Conde, La Carreta, Garrido Foundation, The Averhoff Family, Henry Parra, Braman Honda, Wolfington Companies, NCR – Local Florida, Marsh & McLennan Agency, Sazon, Promotional Party Sticks, Champion Companies, iBody, Google, Nuage Designs, Liquid Sky Laser, Lourdes Milian Productions, Bambini Soiree, Casa Diris, Randy Borges, Julien Diaz, Selecta Magazine, SocialMiami.com, Radio Mambi, Mix 98.3, Amor 107.5 and Univision America.

Pomona College celebrated Partnership with Posse Foundation By Betty Alvarez

Pomona College, a nationally renowned liberal arts college celebrated its expanded partnership with The Posse Foundation to provide 10 full-tuition scholarships to Miami-area high school seniors who are interested in STEM studies and careers. A cocktail reception was held at Tuyo restaurant located on the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus which was attended by educational leaders in Miami Dade County.

“We are happy to be partnering with The Posse Foundation in Miami for the first time. We know this is going to be a successful program for the students selected. Pomona College began its partnership with the Posse Foundation in 2004 and has graduated five groups of Posse students with a nearly 100 percent four-year graduation rate. Deborah Bial, president of Posse Foundation stated, “The Posse Foundation appreciates Pomona College and their commitment to diversity in education they are true institutional heroes. Collectively, they send a clear message giving these young men and women the opportunity to become well educated leaders of tomorrow.

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is coming up again! Are you ready? While the penalty for being uninsured the first year is relatively small, it grows quickly each year. Even more important than the fine, though, is that being uninsured can be devastating for an artist or arts organization if anything happens. It is important to be aware of your rights and the benefits available, as well as the penalties.

Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This panel covers all the aspects of the Affordable Care Act and helps you understand what your options are. This is crucial information for artists and art organizations. Participants also receive resources to help them navigate the world of health insurance. Following the seminar, there is social time with sponsored refreshments and an opportunity for personal questions to the presenters, as well as assistance signing up on the spot.

The evening’s program provides important information and support at one time and in one place; everything you need to know about the new law but were afraid to ask, as well as assitance signing up. Although this is the second year of the Affordable Care Act, many artists and non-profits remain woefully unaware of the details. Though the program is still confusing, there are many benefits and subsidies that could be available to artists and organizations. Come and learn how to navigate the system for your best results in a friendly and helpful atmosphere.

We do hope you’ll join us for this exciting discussion, and thank you for your continued support.

Buskerfest Miami hosts a community forum to discuss a proposed model ordinance that distinguishes street performance from panhandling as a legal, protected act. Join us and other Downtown Miami stakeholders at the Miami Center for Architecture and Design for light snacks, drinks, live performance and a conversation about fostering a culture of street performance in Miami’s developing urban core. The event is free and open to the public. Limited space available – RSVP today!

The current no-panhandling ordinance in downtown has been misinterpreted to include street performance, and we would like to legally distinguish between busking and panhandling. A thriving street performance culture has had a documented positive impact on local economies, street safety and neighborhood vitality in cities such as New York, New Orleans, Seattle and San Francisco. We would like to add Miami to the list of cities embracing public performance in public spaces.

This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.

Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

About Pèrez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami was originally founded as the Center for Fine Arts, and was strictly an exhibiting organization with no collection of its own. In 1996 the museum was renamed Miami Art Museum and dedicated itself to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a special emphasis on art of the Americas. Since then, the collection has grown steadily across a range of media. The new Pérez Art Museum Miami in downtown Miami’s Museum Park strengthens the Museum’s role as a vital cultural and educational center. Opened as Pérez Art Museum Miami in recognition of a landmark gift of cash and art from Jorge M. Pérez —now valued at $40 million—the museum serves as a resource commensurate with Miami’s thriving community of artists, designers, collectors and arts-engaged public.

About Miami Broward Carnival
Held every year as a way to celebrate and share the Caribbean culture, the Miami Broward Carnival is heralded as one of South Florida’s top festivals, fostering community pride and civic involvement, and providing critical opportunities to the Caribbean people in South Florida to promote cultural exchange and build economic cooperation in the multi-cultural environment that is Miami. The Miami Broward Carnival will be held on October 12, 2014, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, Inc. featuring the rich, bold and colorful costumes of the over 20 masquerade bands, the iconic parade, and a concert.
