Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York. Neshat’s early photographic works include the Women of Allah series (1993–1997), which explored the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works departed from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and narratives. In 2009, Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion Award for Best Director in the 66th Venice International Film Festival. Neshat’s recent photographic series include The Book of Kings (2012) and Our House Is on Fire (2013). Neshat has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums internationally. A major exhibition of her work recently opened at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Shirin was included in the 48th Venice Biennale of Art (1999), Whitney Biennial (2000), Documenta XI (2002) and Prospect.1 New Orleans (2009). She was awarded the Grand Prix of the Gwangju Biennial (2000), the Golden Lion Award, the First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennial (1999), the Hiroshima Freedom Prize (2005), and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2006). Neshat is currently working on her second feature-length film, based on the life and art of the legendary Egyptian singer Oum Kolthum.

Mickalene Thomas is a distinguished visual artist and filmmaker who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally since 2003. She is best known for combining art-historical, political, and pop-cultural references to create striking figurative and nonfigurative paintings. Her work stems from a long study of art history and classical genres of portraiture, introducing complex notions of femininity and challenging common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representation. Thomas’s first solo museum exhibition was in 2012 at the Brooklyn Museum and Santa Monica Museum of Art. Thomas’s work is in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Seattle Art Museum; and Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. She was born in 1971 in New Jersey and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Heidi Zuckerman is the Aspen Art Museum’s CEO and Director, overseeing all aspects of the AAM’s guiding vision and mission, administrative policies, curatorial and educational practices, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts. During her ten-year tenure with the AAM, she has secured a budget surplus every year—reinvesting instead of drawing from the endowment; fostered a 270+% increase in operational budget ($1.9M to $7M); and overseen the successful strategic planning and capital and endowment fundraising of $75M for the construction of the AAM’s Shigeru Ban–designed facility, which opened to the public in 2014. From 2004 to 2005, Zuckerman served as the Chair of the Art Curatorial Department at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and from 1999 to 2005, as the institution’s Phyllis Wattis MATRIX Curator. Prior to this, Zuckerman served as the Assistant Curator of 20th-Century Art at the Jewish Museum in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in European History from the University of Pennsylvania; a Diploma from the Royal Society of Art, Christie’s, London; as well as a Master of Arts degree in Art History from CUNY Hunter College. She also serves as the Art Network Chair for the Young Presidents’ Organization globally.

Beginning in Miami and Miami Beach during the post World War II era as a local variation of modernist architectural movements in other parts of the world, MiMo buildings add glamour, fun, and material excess to otherwise stark, minimalist, and efficient styles.

The Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and Deauville hotels and garden style apartments are stunning examples of MiMo – featuring acute angles, delta wings, sweeping curved walls, and soaring pylons. Like Art Deco, there is a strong preservationist movement to preserve MiMo from the wrecking ball. The present development boom is relentless in its quest to replace this architecture with highrises.

David Dermer, former Miami Beach’s mayor will give a lecture on the politics of development in Miami Beach 1995-2005, focusing on the Save Miami Beach movement and his efforts battling big money to try to limit development on Miami Beach.

David Dermer Bio:
On September 9, 2005, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer was returned to office for a third and final term. Dermer was the second youngest mayor in city history when first elected to the post in 2001 at age 38. Only his father, former Miami Beach Mayor Jay Dermer was younger, when he was elected mayor in 1967.
Prior to becoming Mayor, David Dermer also served a successful 4-year term as a Miami Beach City Commissioner. A dedicated community activist and attorney, Dermer first emerged onto the Miami Beach political scene as the leader of the successful “Save Miami Beach” (SMB) ballot initiative, a movement aimed at curbing overdevelopment along the City’s waterfront. Dermer’s grassroots organization gathered more than 6000 voter signatures, placing the charter amendment on the ballot. The SMB campaign won over voters and the initiative passed overwhelmingly, despite the fact that SMB’s opposition spent $2 million to Dermer’s $25,000. David Dermer graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1980. He received his Bachelors Degree in Justice from American University in Washington D.C. and subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law. He served as a State Prosecutor for the 17th Judicial Circuit after graduation and in 1990 he opened his own firm, David Dermer Law Offices. He currently teaches History and Government at Miami Beach Senior High School.

The decade from the mid-1970’s to the mid-1980’s was a turbulent time for Miami Beach. Its best years as a glamorous vacation destination and Hollywood hot spot were behind it. The sun-and-fun formula that had delivered so much since the end of World War II had grown stale as new competitors like Disney World and the Caribbean drew tourists that had once flocked to the Beach. The city also faced overlapping demographic crises with a rapidly aging population in South Beach battered by inflation and an unexpected influx of poor immigrants during the Mariel boatlift.

In the midst of this turmoil, an alternative approach to development emerged in the most unlikely of places: South Beach, the center of the crisis. Historic preservation of Art Deco architecture offered an unexpected new vision to compete with the fading formulas of the past. It was during this tumultuous period that a battle for the city’s identity commenced, pitting big developers against scrappy preservationists, generating controversial images in television and film, and setting the stage for the remaking of Miami Beach.

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.
What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.
Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

Getting Here:
You can find street parking around the building or park at the 700 Biscayne lot right $5 for across from the American Airline Arena.
Traveling by MetroRail/MetroMover? Disembark at Park West Station right behind our building.
To access the building walk in thru the residential entrance of the MarinaBlue Building (888 Biscayne Blvd). Check in with concierge and make sure they direct you to the commercial/office door where KeyWorking is located on the 5th floor.

The democratization of technology of recent years has dropped the barrier of entry, providing indie filmmakers with the resources to be successful outside of the Hollywood system. There is nothing stopping you from making a nano budget film, right here in Miami (without needing to resort to criminal activities).

This Workshop Covers:

How to properly plan a low-budget feature

Your film’s saving grace: how to land an angel investor

Shooting a nano-budget feature in Miami

How to work with SAG Actors and non-actors

Time to get noticed: how to successfully market your film

Signing with an agent

Now you have offer: Now What? How to pick the right distribution company

Dr. John Demartini, the noted educator, business consultant, author and founder of the Demartini Institute based in Houston, is no stranger to overcoming adversity. Like many members of today’s youth, he found himself in trouble academically and legally, with seeming no chance of bettering himself. Now a globally renowned inspirational speaker, Demartini, who was featured in the acclaimed book and video motivational series The Secret, is presenting his acclaimed program, “Activate Your Unique Genius”, on Wednesday, May 6 at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables in Miami. This talk is open to the public.

“Activate Your Unique Genius” is one of the several targeted presentations that Demartini has incorporated into the trademarked Demartini Method, a curriculum that focuses on empowering individuals and organizations as well as contributing to transforming both micro- and macro-social dynamics around the world. Demartini, considered one of the world’s leading authorities on human behavior and personal development, has conducted thousands of public talks based on these modules all over the globe.

“When I was 17 years old, I was introduced to a man who inspired me and told me that I could be a genius. I was a high school dropout and I didn’t even know at that time how to read, but his certainty in my ability made me believe that I could be intelligent,” Demartini said. “There are certain principles that can be applied to activate genius and there is no reason why you can’t activate that for yourself. In this talk, I will be showing you how to unlock amazing innovation and genius inside of you and how to handle great challenges.”

Demartini is the author of 40 books published in over 29 different languages. He has produced over 60 CDs and DVDs covering subjects such as development in relationships, wealth, education and business.

THE FACTS:

The new TriRail Connection at All Aboard Florida’s MiamiCentral would open just in time for drivers to avoid the looming five-year nightmare on I-95 south of Golden Glades.

Just when you thought getting into Downtown Miami couldn’t get any worse, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announces the most significant I-95 project in Miami-Dade since the installation of toll express lanes. FDOT plans to replace pavement and make other upgrades between NW 8th and NW 79th streets starting in 2017. The project will take five years, snarling traffic into and out of Downtown Miami until the year 2022.

South Floridians deserve better – and one solution stands right in front of us: Bring Tri-Rail into Downtown Miami at All Aboard Florida’s new MiamiCentral Station in 2016.

The opportunity for Tri-Rail to provide 26 direct trains per weekday from all points north on the existing Tri-Rail system into Downtown Miami could alleviate this nightmare, and it’s critical to the future development of public transit in Miami-Dade County as well. This is a smart investment in Miami’s transportation and economic future. It would not only realize Tri-Rail service to Downtown Miami, but also integrate All Aboard Florida, Metrorail, MetroMover, the Miami-Dade County bus system and Tri-Rail into an intermodal transit center with connections to all parts of Miami-Dade County, South Florida and even the Orlando/Central Florida area.

This transit hub would further enhance development in Downtown Miami and further assure the viability of other projects like Museum Park, American Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center, World Center Miami and the World Center Convention Center by bringing millions of new visitors from the Tri-County area to patronize these projects.

This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to propel our public transit system into the 21stCentury.

Let’s make this connection!

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action 3/8/15

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action
Sunday, March 8th
Liberty City,
Miami, FL

President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton will be hosting the eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting, which will bring together more than 1,000 college students from around the world on March 6-8 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

In partnership with Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI) in Liberty City and the University of Miami, on Sunday, March 8th, President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the Clinton Global Initiative University Day of Action, a day of volunteering to give back to the community.

More than 700 CGIU students will work on neighborhood and school improvement projects ranging from urban agriculture to revitalizing basketball courts and painting murals. More than 30 projects are expected to be completed. MCI has designated 29 blocks in Liberty City as their “Impact Zone”. CGIU Day of Action will officially expand MCI’s Block-by-Block strategy, within the Impact Zone, from four blocks to eight. These blocks are home to Charles R. Drew K-8 Center, early learning centers, single family homes, public and low income apartments. MCI’s “cradle-to-college-to-career” strategy is focused on intentionally investing in children and their families. We are determined that the future of Liberty City’s children will not be defined by their zip code.

Clinton Global Initiative University:
The Eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) brings students, innovators, thought-leaders, and civically-engaged celebrities to make a difference in CGIU’s five focus areas: education; environment and climate change; peace and human rights; poverty alleviation; and public health.

University Of Miami:
Since the first CGI U meeting, attendees have made 4,800 Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable plans to address challenges on campus, in local communities, or around the world. This growing community of young leaders represents over 875 schools, 145 countries, and all 50 states.

This year, through the CGI University Network, the Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge, and other opportunities, more than $900,000 in funding opportunities will be available to select CGI U 2015 students to help them turn their ideas into action.

The University of Miami first hosted CGI U in 2010 and is the first school to host the event twice. Throughout the meeting, students will engage in various topic-and skill-based sessions, which will empower them to take action in their communities and around the world.

Plenary session topics at CGI U 2015 will include:
Fast Forward: Accelerating Opportunity for All, which will explore how students and universities, in partnerships with the public, private, and civil society sectors, can expand access to opportunity worldwide;
The Power of Big Data, which will examine how CGI U students can harness big data as a tool for addressing global challenges and scaling their existing commitments, as well as expanding access to big data for all; and
The Future of Energy, which will explore how young entrepreneurs can most effectively meet the rising demand for affordable renewable solutions, design the next generation of low-carbon energy technologies, and bring energy efficiency best practices to existing buildings, vehicles, and industrial processes.

CGI U Schedule:
On March 5 and 6, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Clinton Foundation Codeathon in the lead up to the CGI University meeting. The Codeathon will challenge developers and designers to build unique digital prototypes inspired by CGI U Commitments to Action in the areas of Education, Global Health, and Environment & Climate Change. The Codeathon, supported in part by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will culminate with team presentations to a panel of expert judges working in the fields of technology and social innovation.

The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum Set To Host Community Discussion On Stand Your Ground and the Use of Mug Shots In Target Practice and Police Relations In The Community

Community Leaders and Activists To Discuss How Community Can Help Improve Relations With The Police

MIAMI, FL, February 17, 2015 – The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum (BPPCM) will host a panel discussion on Tuesday, February 24th, from 7-9:30pm. The topics will include the Stand Your Ground law, recent use of mug shots in target practice and overall police relations in the community. The BPPCM is located at 480 NW 11th Street,Miami, Fl. The moderator for the evening is Dr. Jimmy Brown (Chief Jimmy Brown), retired Miami-Dade Division Chief and the host of Hot Talk on Hot 105 for the past 25 years. The distinguished panel includes State Senator Dwight Bullard (District 39), Florida State Representative Shevrin Jones (District 101), Retired Lt. Archie McKay (BPPCM), Bishop James Adams (St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church), Troy E. Wright(Executive Director, Trayvon Martin Foundation) and Rene T. Gordon, Esq. The #Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum is a major place to visit for local, national and international tourists to learn about the accomplishments and struggles of pre-Civil Rights black officers.

In 1944, the Miami Police Department began a new era in law enforcement hiring the first five African-American police officers—Ralph White, Moody Hall, Clyde Lee, Edward Kimball, and John Milledge—who served and protected the Central Negro District now known as Overtown, Liberty City and Coconut Grove. Because of segregation, the officers could not operate out of the main Miami Police Station. So, they policed by walking and riding bicycles. There are even stories of arrested prisoners being taken to jail on bicycle handlebars, or by walking and even hailing rides from citizens driving by. They had no cars, no radio contact and, most of all, no headquarters, until 1950 when renowned Miami architect, Walter G. DeGarmo, designed the first and only Black Precinct and Courthouse in the nation. Today, it’s the only museum of its kind in the country.

The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Retired officers like Lt. Archie McKay, who served in the facility when it was a precinct, regale guests with stories and challenges of law enforcement during segregation. On the weekend, the museum becomes the backdrop for Vegas-style, Ball & Chain Weddings where couples “tie the knot” during ceremonies that are unique, fun and inexpensive.

The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum is a 501©3.

Visit http://historicalblackprecinct.org for directions and more interesting facts about the venue and weddings.

Moderator: Joshua Kingston, Independent Grant Writer, Curator, Miami Mixer

Following the outstanding response to our first grants seminar back in July of 2014, we are following up with an exciting opportunity to meet representatives from three of the main funders in Miami, the Miami Foundation, the Knight Foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs. This is a rare chance to hear directly from the grantmakers and ask them all your questions.

Did you know that individual artists can receive grants without being a charity organization? That is right, there are grants out there available to artists directly. Come and learn what the grantmakers are looking for and how best to approach them with proposals. Approaching foundations often seems overwhelming and intimidating, but grants are actually managed by people who want to help you do great things for the community. We are going to introduce you to the real people who really work at these institutions so that next time you go to apply, you will have a friend on the inside.

Street art is a hot commodity in Miami, featured in our neighborhoods and in art auctions, fairs and events. It is also featured in advertisements, promotions and in other ways not always endorsed by the artists. Can street art be copyrighted? Artist’s rights have been in the news due to two well known law cases pitting street artists against corporate entities. The slippery nature of copyright law has left many wondering where to draw the line. There are no easy answers. Join us for a moot court style forum to explore this important topic.

During your FREE drop-in consultation, find out more about scalp micro-pigmentation and see if it’s right for you! Come in to speak with a practitioner about the treatment, get price quotes and set up a treatment plan.

About Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP):
SMP was developed as both a cosmetic procedure for men suffering with all types of hair loss, and as a medical procedure to help conceal scars, burns and birthmarks, as well as the full spectrum of alopecia strains. During a SMP procedure, a blend of specialized pigments is deposited into the dermal layer of the skin on the scalp. Using a highly sophisticated combination of angles, penetration depths, deposit sizes and pigment shades, these deposits create an extremely realistic illusion of real shaven hair on the scalp.

About HIS Hair:
HIS Hair Clinic is an internationally recognized, specialist hair loss treatment clinic, with prominent locations in major urban centers around the world. Each clinic complies with (and exceeds) all core professional standards of effective treatments, cleanliness and health and safety. We are always opening new clinics further afield, to enable even greater access to our unique SMP® treatment for hair loss.

It Is now possible to tell stories using non-linear storytelling.

The wall between a fiction and the real world doesn’t exist anymore. The world becomes a total platform. Are we characters? Are we discovering an old situation with new eyes? What are the consequences of this new situation? Who are the puppet masters of our lives ? Should we feel responsible as authors and as citizens? Is it just an evolution?

Or just a new world?

Happiness is a buzzword that’s everywhere these days. But what does it really mean? Is it just about smiley faces and “positive thinking”? Can you really, truly get happier and stay happier? Hannah Sentenac will answer your burning questions in her heart-to-heart talk about the science of happiness, beating depression and living a joyful life at the Bookstore in the Grove, Nov 25th.

Despite our society’s increasing material wealth, more people than ever are bogged down by depression, anxiety and a feeling of alienation. As a Happiness Advocate, Hannah speaks about happiness, embarks on happiness-focused projects and writes about happiness for publications including the Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Live Happy magazine and her blog, HannahGetsHappy.com.

Expect a wildly entertaining talk with plenty of audience participation; interactive, science-based exercises to get you started on your happiness journey; a happiness reading list and loads of amusing anecdotes. Hannah will also introduce her exciting new interactive art installation, The Happy Wall, going up in Cocowalk on November 29th!

CreativeMornings Miami Chance 11/14/14

CreativeMornings/Miami: CHANCE!
chanceNovember 14, 8:30am – 10:00am
Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD)
100 NE 1st Ave
Miami, Florida 33132

Take a CHANCE ! Taking a chance is at the heart of every CreativeMornings chapter. It’s a chance the organizers take to start their own chapter, the chance a speaker takes to share their story and, of course, the chance the attendees take to get up early in the morning and listen.

This November, we’re celebrating those uncertainties and risks with the theme of Chance and our speaker Robin Hill, photographer for architecture and design.

2014 begins my 28th year as a professional photographer. Back in 2006 I had the good fortune of spending a few hours with my hero, Julius Shulman at the opening of the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. He was 96 years old and still working and was in his 7th decade as a photographer which always helps to give me some perspective. (which as an Architectural Photographer is a very handy thing!) I’m deeply passionate about my chosen field and strongly believe in the power of design to affect our lives in a profound way. I see myself as being an integral part of the design community and my tool is photography. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some of the top names in the field, and much of the force of their creative work is displayed throughout the website.

To have an artists, a gallery owners and the directors of two of Miami’s most active environmental organization, is the perfect combination for a productive and thought-provoking exchange of ideas.” Explained Horacion Knaeber, Director of INSJ.
Art as a vehicle to create consciousness of the environment as a living space is not a strange concept for our panelists. Ruben Santurian is a world-renowned artist who is now launching his latest series: Trashformers – which are sculptures made of trash and recyclable materials in the shape of who will be speaking about the relationship between men and nature through art. Art + tech + waffles is a winning combination any day of the week, but we hope you will come enjoy it next Wednesday, Nov. 5 at a very special edition of #WaffleWednesday, hosted by LiveNinja.

The weekly tech meet-up in Wynwood is welcoming the South Florida Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award nominees. Over breakfast, the six small arts groups vying for $20,000 will be there to talk about their projects, answer questions – and hopefully secure a few votes.

Below is a bit more about our nominees, and videos of each are up at knightarts.org/peopleschoice. RSVP for Waffle Wednesdays on Eventbrite. Big thanks to LiveNinja and the Arts and Business Council for co-hosting.

FATVillage Arts District: A contemporary art exhibition space in Fort Lauderdale, FATVillage showcases large-scale, interactive works. Right now, the space is only open for its monthly art walks. The prize would help FATVillage open more often, with more programming. (Text VOTE1 to 22333)

HICCUP: The acronym stands for Hialeah Contemporary Culture Project, and the collective works to take art out of galleries and into the streets of Northwest Dade. With funding, HICCUP wants to open-up a basis of operations in Hialeah to launch its works and make the city “a place for creative action.” (Text VOTE2 to 22333)

Ife-Ile: The Afro-Cuban dance troupe wants to expand its annual dance festival, and also to create a musical that is based on the lives and influence of Cubans who came to Miami during the Mariel Boatlift. Through its work, IFE-ILE not only provides a place for Cuban-American artists to practice their craft, but also a place to tell their own stories. (Text VOTE3 to 22333)

Key West Art and Historical Society: The group wants to take the art and history of Key West into schools. One idea, for example, is to take the works of local artist Mario Sanchez, who created scenes of the city, into classrooms as a way to understand the island’s and Monroe County’s history and culture. (Text VOTE4 to 22333)

Swampspace: This Design District gallery run by artist Oliver Sanchez wants to continue to provide an exhibition space that focuses on artistic values rather than profit. The prize would help Swampspace fund more large-scale exhibitions and allow artists to bring their big ideas to fruition (Text VOTE5 to 22333)

Mexican American Council: This long-time community group works to reduce the drop out rate and increase cultural opportunities for Mexican-Americans in South Dade. With funding, the council hopes to open a mariachi academy for students where they can both learn to play instruments and understand Mexican culture. (Text VOTE6 to 22333)
