Popular author and food writer Jesse Blanco, the founder of Eat It and Like It and Eat It Florida, will speak at the Books & Books flagship location in Coral Gables, Fla., on Monday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. as part of “An Evening With Jesse Blanco.” This event is free and open to the public. A full-time food writer with an insatiable desire to travel, eat and explore, Blanco is the acclaimed author of Savannah Food Crawls and Charleston Food Crawls. His 24-year career in TV news – coupled with his large Cuban family’s influence in Miami – has given him the ability to connect with viewers and readers through food.

Blanco grew up in Coconut Grove, graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in 1987 and earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Central Florida in 1994 before launching a successful 24-year career as a television news anchor, reporter and sportscaster. Over the years, he has covered a wide range of news stories in Nashville, Tenn.; El Paso, Tex.; and Savannah, Ga., where he currently resides with his wife, Sheila.

In 2010, Blanco launched a popular blog – and later an award-winning television show – called Eat It and Like It, which was originally dedicated to exploring the underappreciated side of Savannah’s food scene. He has since expanded Eat and It and Like It to include cities and towns across the Southeast and is currently launching Eat It Florida, which is focused on celebrating exceptional food and drink across the Sunshine State.

Blanco published Savannah Food Crawls: Touring the Neighborhoods One Bite and Libation at a Time in 2023 and Charleston Food Crawls: Touring the Neighborhoods One Bite and Libation at a Time in 2024. Both books offer exciting culinary tours of the South’s most acclaimed cities, each of which has a vibrant, buzzworthy food scene. In each book, this larger-than-life food writer eagerly invites readers to dig into Savannah and Charleston, one dish at a time.

Chef Samuel Gorenstein of Abbalé Telavivian Kitchen, Miami’s quintessential modern Mediterranean dining destination, is teaming up for a special, one-night collaboration with Chef Álvaro Clavijo and the culinary team of El Chato, the acclaimed contemporary Colombian bistro from Bogotá, ranked No. 25 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants of 2024. On Thursday, September 19th, Gorenstein and Clavijo will present “Mediterranean Meets the Tropics,” a specially curated six-course dinner featuring dishes that showcase the Mediterranean and Latin influences of their celebrated backgrounds and establishments. Both chefs, rooted in Colombian tradition and united by a passion for Mediterranean food, will create a unique dining experience priced at $110 per person, held at Abbalé Telavivian Kitchen in Aventura, with reservations available from 7 – 9 PM on OpenTable.

Upon arrival, guests will be greeted with welcome cocktails courtesy of Brugal 1888 Rum and No. 3 London Dry Gin, setting the stage for an evening that highlights the rich flavors of Colombia fused with the vibrant, fresh ingredients of Mediterranean cuisine. Renowned for producing Asian-inspired culinary gatherings in Miami over the last 12 years, Eleanor Hoh has ideated her passion for cultivating the essence of Asian dining experiences by bringing people together for celebratory tastings at Miami’s most noteworthy Asian dining destinations. FLITE Center’s “Sip, Savor and Screening” benefit presented by Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will take place on Tuesday, August 20, from 6 – 9 p.m., at Movies of Delray (7421 W Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach). This special evening, part of Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD), will include a complimentary libation, gourmet light bites, a raffle and a ticket to view the 2024 drama, Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, an uplifting true story about how a small community banded together to transform the lives of its most vulnerable youth. All proceeds will go toward FLITE Center programs and services, which provide young adults with resources and support to help them transition to independent living. FLITE Center is a one-stop resource center offering all supportive services to youth aging out of foster care, chronically homeless youth, human trafficking survivors, and LGBTQ+ youth.

Featured on Oprah, the powerful Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot follows a rural Texas church community’s life-changing decision for 22 families to adopt 77 vulnerable children from the foster care system, helping among other things to shield them from the horrors of human trafficking. Led by Reverend Martin and his wife Donna, this act of boundless compassion ignited a movement, proving with passion and commitment, that the battle for America’s most vulnerable can be won.

With comprehensive, seamless support, FLITE Center guides nearly 2,000 youth annually through life’s maze. FLITE connects them to employment, education, health services, counseling, and safe, affordable housing. Established in Broward County, FLITE Center has been serving the West Palm Beach community since 2021. In 2022, it expanded its services by adding a 1,500-square-foot drop-in center located in the historic northwest sector of downtown – in an area youth can easily reach. More recently, new property space began providing a safe, secure and reliable immediate housing emergency landing space lovingly called Falcon Ridge for human trafficking survivor youth and their families.

FLITE Center’s West Palm Beach’s Anti-Human Trafficking programming is supported through a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant through the Office of the Attorney General of Florida and through a U.S. Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime Housing Assistance Grant, helping at-risk and sex-trafficked children and young adults between the ages of 10 – 24 with trauma informed care, guidance and support.

Celebrating 47 years, Boca Chamber Festival Days is the chamber’s outreach to the non-profit community. Non-profit chamber members join forces with for-profit chamber members to hold events during the month of August with a primary objective of enhancing awareness and gathering funds for philanthropic endeavors. Entrepreneur Giulia Carniato first opened P.Pole in Coral Gables in 2018. The 25-year-old has put a vibrant, Gen-Z spin on the classic pizzeria: at her street-art-filled P.Pole locations in Miami, including a flagship in South Beach, where she ditches the traditional pizza oven for a fun take on the world’s favorite dish. Here, each skateboard-shaped pizza is completely bespoke. Customers choose their own dough—which can be made with chia seeds—and unique toppings such as gorgonzola, ricotta, jalapeños, and artichokes. And pizzas are each baked within a few minutes.

After an inaugural colorful 2023 event attended by hundreds in Ft, Lauderdale, this marks the second local edition of the Festival of Colors USA. Gulfstream Park’s Curlin Florida Derby returns on Saturday, March 30th, one of Florida’s most legendary races leading up to the Kentucky Derby. As Miami’s first (and only) French-Kosher restaurant, Ostrow Brasserie is winning raves for its innovative cuisine, which blends classical French dishes with Kosher cooking techniques. Located in the trendy Buena Vista neighborhood, two minutes north of the Design District, the vibe is sophisticated and cozy. The brasserie-style space features an open kitchen, tropical oasis back patio, and private dining room.

The design of the 3,000-square-foot Ostrow Brasserie was inspired by Chef Olivia’s childhood in France, complemented by Miami’s tropical influences. A whimsical art wall highlights over 40 pieces from Chef Olivia’s personal collection, while the signature Art Nouveau mural, a replica of one of artist Alphonse Mucha’s famous beer posters, at the restaurant’s entrance pays tribute to France’s storied past.

A Trompe-l’œil signature décor element features a door cut out of the original Mucha mural leading to the private dining room, with a second, identical mural on the back wall. The optical illusion adds a playful touch to the restaurant’s décor.

Stunning coral countertops speckled with opalescent “rocks” set the tone for the beautifully designed 150-seat restaurant. Adorning the two bars at the entrance, the coral and rock theme is also incorporated in the expansive counter fronting the exhibition kitchen, where guests can watch the art of cooking as it occurs. Dark green leather-backed stools allow for a birds-eye view of the culinary theatrics.

Hanging copper bubble lights are suggestive of France’s favorite drink, Champagne. The white leather rounded chairs had a former life at the iconic Delano hotel and have been recovered and restored for this venture.
Toward the back of the restaurant, past two glass doors, is a secret garden. This lush and verdant space is open for regular dining as well as for private parties and events. It’s also dog-friendly for guests accompanied by their pets.

Children ages 5 – 10 will spread their wings during this month’s spring break Camp Aviation Academy from March 25 – March 29! Campers will join MODS’ very own Aviation Academy interns as they demonstrate some of the most amazing aviation activities! Learn from up-and-coming aviators about the world of aviation, tinker with machinery and take flight in MODS’ Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Hangar.

South Florida’s award-winning attraction features 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida. The showpiece of the museum since 1993, this unique timepiece is one of only three in the world.

Children can also visit and investigate underwater marvels in MODS’ Voyage to the Deep – Underwater Adventures, a new traveling exhibit. “Seas” the day and embark on the legendary Nautilus submarine with Captain Nemo for an interactive journey of underwater exploration!
