Dominoes are no longer found just on Calle Ocho, the Miami cultural pastime is making its mark as a mainstay throughout the Magic City. Every Tuesday from 7PM to 11PM, La Placita will host Domino Night tournaments inviting local chefs to compete for the Golden Pilon. Also open to the public, the outdoor space will transform into a Latin piano bar with a pianist taking requests, complete with a cigar roller.

Each week, the restaurant will set up La Lechonera pop up where guests will have the chance to select different foods displayed and cooked on the spot. Inspired by the Lechoneras of the mountains in Puerto Rico, the menu will be finished with local ingredients and chef Mendin’s personal touch. Specials will include all food for under $10, Cuchifritos for $5, craft cocktails for $7, specialty cocktails for $9, Medalla beer for $2, and Don Q rum cocktails for $5.

Designed as a mango lover’s festival, Bingo, Bango, That’s My Mango promises to be a juicy jubilee celebrating Miami’s favorite seasonal fruit, as well as local community farms and purveyors. The event is free and open to the public.

Held at Miami Beach’s first food hall nestled just off Lincoln Lane, Bingo, Bango, That’s My Mango is a family-friendly event featuring unique programming, entertainment, live music, food sampling, games, live demonstrations, shopping from local artisans and a mango contest where locals compete to win prizes and a Mango trophy.

Each of the Lincoln Eatery’s 13 food purveyors will create a custom, mango-inspired dish showcasing different varieties of mango from various local farms. Patrons are invited to sample as many recipes as possible through a fun Bingo style game called M-A-N-G-O where one crosses off squares as they taste for a chance to win prizes.

Locals are encouraged to submit their homegrown mangos into a mango tasting contest with a celebrity panel of judges, where winners take home prizes for biggest, smallest, ugliest and juiciest mango. Surplus mangos will be collected and donated to the Miami Rescue Mission.

Dominoes are no longer found just on Calle Ocho, the Miami cultural pastime is making its mark as a mainstay throughout the Magic City. Every Tuesday from 7PM to 11PM, La Placita will host Domino Night tournaments inviting local chefs to compete for the Golden Pilon. Also open to the public, the outdoor space will transform into a Latin piano bar with a pianist taking requests, complete with a cigar roller.

Each week, the restaurant will set up La Lechonera pop up where guests will have the chance to select different foods displayed and cooked on the spot. Inspired by the Lechoneras of the mountains in Puerto Rico, the menu will be finished with local ingredients and chef Mendin’s personal touch. Specials will include all food for under $10, Cuchifritos for $5, craft cocktails for $7, specialty cocktails for $9, Medalla beer for $2, and Don Q rum cocktails for $5.

On Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m., Caja Caliente is welcoming Brooklyn’s finest, Chef Louie Estrada for their first “Getty in the Gables” pop-up event. As seen on Chopped Chef, Louie Estrada owns and operates My Cuban Spot, a traditional cuban restaurant in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. For this event, Estrada is preparing his specialty: the Classic Cuban Sandwich. Meanwhile, Leon will prepare Arroz Con Pollo, a signature Cuban dish she will reinvent from a classic recipe passed down from generations to her own mouthwatering twist.
Caja Caliente Coral Gables aims to bring locals a tropical laid back flare, the event is open to the public, no RSVP required as this “Getty” is reminiscent to house parties one used to attend back in highschool. This “Getty AKA Get Together” is like no other, jam out with live acoustic entertainment by Miami native Marti as you sip on specialty cocktails and ice-cold beer.

No. Although the event is family friendly and all ages, everyone attending the event must have an age appropriate admission ticket. There are two ticket types: 21+ OR Under 21. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are various public parking lots located around and near The ARC where the Wepaaa! Festival is being held. You can also take the Tri-Rail to the Opa-Locka Station.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

You can bring a printed ticket or provide a copy on a mobile device. Each person entering the event MUST have a ticket.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn’t match the person who attends?

Yes. It is ok if the printed name on the ticket is different than the person attending the event. A valid ID will still be required for admission of the person attending the event at time of entry.

Do I have to register separately for the Domino Tournament?

Is this an outdoor event?

Dominoes are no longer found just on Calle Ocho, the Miami cultural pastime is making its mark as a mainstay throughout the Magic City. Every Tuesday from 7PM to 11PM, La Placita will host Domino Night tournaments inviting local chefs to compete for the Golden Pilon. Also open to the public, the outdoor space will transform into a Latin piano bar with a pianist taking requests, complete with a cigar roller.

Each week, the restaurant will set up La Lechonera pop up where guests will have the chance to select different foods displayed and cooked on the spot. Inspired by the Lechoneras of the mountains in Puerto Rico, the menu will be finished with local ingredients and chef Mendin’s personal touch. Debuting May 2019, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami will be hosting its inaugural “The Art of Arts Series,” a rotational celebration of art featuring three distinct artists from Brazil, Montreal and Key Biscayne. The series is curated by Beauty & Brawn, a Chicago-based art curation company, and sponsored by various spirit brands from Edrington, Taittinger and Russian Standard Vodka. From May 3 – 24, the resort will become a platform for an illustrator rooted in Quantum Physics, a mixed-media artist and a photographer to share their work and spread their affinity for art in their respective mediums.
Throughout the month of May, guests will have the opportunity to interact with each artist through the following workshops and events, hosted at Lightkeepers, Cantina Beach, Dune Burgers on the Beach and RUMBAR. Proceeds from this series will go to support the mission of Chapman Partnership; a Miami-Dade homeless assistance center that empowers their 800 men, women, and children to become self-sufficient and build a positive future.

We all scream for ice cream! Gulfstream Park invites ice cream lovers to celebrate Free Cone Day on Tuesday, May 14 at Häagen-Dazs. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the ice cream shop will offer all guests a free cone and guests will be able to choose from select flavors. In addition, Gulfstream Park will be hosting an afternoon of free entertainment at Champions Plaza featuring an interactive DJ, face painting, balloons, sing-alongs, and appearances by characters from Frozen. With an all-star cast of chefs who specialize in whole animal cooking paired with farmers responsibly raising delicious heritage breed pigs, Cochon555 returns to Miami on Sunday, May 19th. This year’s competing chefs include Jorgie Ramos of BARLEY; Karla Hoyos of The Bazaar by Jose Andres; Daniel Bouza of PokéBao; Fernando Desa of Goya; and Jimmy Lebron of 27 Restaurant & Bar.
One week before the event, each chef will receive a 200-pound heritage breed pig sustainably sourced from a family farm to start preparing their six pork dishes for the event. To win the friendly competition for a cause, the chef’s menu must woo 14 celebrity judges with their “Judge’s Plate” scored on utilization, technique, overall flavor, and be voted “Best Bite of the Day” by guests. The winning “Prince or Princess of Pork” in Miami will advance to the national finale, Grand Cochon, a head-to-tail, winner-take-all showdown for the ultimate crown in Chicago on September 15, 2019.

Each event also features an educational whole animal butchery program called the Pop-Up Butcher Shop and a charitable Silent Auction. This year’s headlining all-star butcher will be Andres Barrientos of Miami Smokers. Additionally, running in tandem are two satellite beverage competitions to complement the whole-animal tilt; Punch Kings presented by El Tesoro Tequila, a whole bottle, large-format spirit competition featuring five top barkeeps in a hand-crafted punch challenge and Somm Smackdown, a face-off of five top sommeliers pairing the best wine with heritage pig.

The whole event is in support of Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of disaster (flood, fire and disease). David Del Rosario has always been a comedic performer. Described as a freeform high energy character driven comic with an edge, in 2005 he had already performed improv and his first stand up comedy acts alongside Comedy Central Present’s very own Al Jackson. In 2009, David created the live sketch comedy show “Category Seven” and then joined Just The Funny Theatre in 2010. In 2011, as a member of the JTF Theater main stage cast; he was given the ability to redefine sketch and improv comedy as a member of the team “Special In A Bad Way”. The group has gone on to receive notoriety in The Miami Herald & The New Times.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor The Forman Family, Broward County pioneers and early developers, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman during its History Makers 2019 fundraiser set for Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the New River Inn. The event spotlights individuals who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

For over a century, the Forman family has been major contributors to the development of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Ever since Hamilton and Blanche Collins Forman arrived in 1910, they, and their descendants, have played leading roles in the fields of agriculture, business, water management, education, public service and philanthropy. Dr. Charles Forman and his brother Hamilton Forman were Broward’s most powerful political figures from the 1950s to the 1990s. When their pioneer dairy farms and pastures were closed to facilitate the building of Florida’s Turnpike in the mid-1950s, the family turned their attention toward education and building a world-class education complex on their land. Today, the former farmland houses campuses of Florida Atlantic University, Florida International and the University of Florida’s Broward complexes, Nova elementary, middle and high schools, Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.

Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman, has been a foremost advocate of historic preservation, arts and culture and philanthropy in Broward County for close to 25 years. For 11 years, Glassman was an administrator for the Broward County Cultural Division where he worked closely with elected officials and business leaders to further the quality of life in all of Broward’s major cities through the arts and culture. This work included serving on advisory boards in Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. He has served on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board (three years) and the Planning and Zoning Board (six years). His many years in various civic leadership positions include president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation and a seven-year tenure as the president of the Central Beach Alliance. Steve has also served as president of several beach condominium associations including his current six-year tenure at the Sapphire Condominium. He has remained focused on fixing our city’s infrastructure via smart growth and proactive future planning.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 108th birthday with cocktails, food and drink stations from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, CA Catering, LauderAle, Gran Forno and more to be announced plus themed entertainment on the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus.

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, Chef Mike Pirolo of Miami Beach’s rustic Italian gem, Macchialina, will be shmearing up hand rolled, baked fresh bagels alongside Miami’s favorite carb artisan, El Bagel’s Matteson Koche. Also debuting is Pirolo’s El Bagel Dip, a delightful iteration of an Italian-style roast beef sandwich – thinly sliced roast beef topped with caramelized onions and tangy homemade salsa verde served on Koche’s savory garlic bagel and accompanied by a rich, beef brodo for dipping.

Pro Tip: There will be limited number of bagels available so be sure to arrive as early as possible.

Another Pro Tip: Don’t even try asking for a scooped-out bagel.

The El Bagel truck will be stationed at Boxelder in Wynwood on 2817 NW 2nd Avenue.

Regarded as Miami’s Freshest Night Out, the annual celebration will be held from 7PM to 10PM at The Palms Hotel & Spa, home to trend-setting farm-to-table concept Essensia Restaurant & Lounge. This year’s unforgettable evening under the stars is possible thanks to partnerships with The Palms Hotel & Spa, Whole Foods, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, JetSet Sounds, Just Ask Boo, The Scout Guide Miami, Menu Men Inc., and Brustman Carrino Public Relations.
