About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned.
Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores.

These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists. The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community.

Knight Foundation, is the recipient of the 2017 Community Champion Award, and Rebecca Fishman Lipsey is the winner of the Ruth Shack Leadership Award.

Ibargüen and Lipsey will be honored at the 20th Donor Next Door Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, in Miami. The luncheon also celebrates the philanthropy of more than 30 individuals, families, foundations and corporations that donate time and money to support the work of nonprofits in South Florida.

As president and CEO of Knight Foundation, Ibargüen oversees a national foundation with $2.3 billion in assets and $140 million in annual grants. Knight invests in programs in journalism, technology, and the arts and in the success of 26 U.S. cities. Ibargüen’s leadership and vision have spurred entrepreneurship and social change in Miami-Dade County, shaking up the status quo to make way for startups, groundbreaking technology programs and community organizations energized with new ideas and solutions.

“As the president of Knight Foundation, Alberto adopted a different approach to philanthropy, investing in nonprofit programs and even businesses that sparked economic growth the region sorely needed,” said Hank Raattama, co-chair of PhilanthropyMiami and a partner at Akerman LLP. “Knight Foundation’s investment strategy turned Miami and even South Florida into one of the hottest places for startups in the country. Alberto’s vision has changed our community and the local economy for decades to come.”

The Community Champion Award was established in 2013 by PhilanthropyMiami, formerly LEAVE A LEGACY© of Miami-Dade, and celebrates an individual or organization that contributes to the well-being of the community through work and philanthropy. It is held in Miami’s Art and Cultural District and is a true celebration of all things we love about South Florida – Food, Art, Music and Fashion! WynwoodMap.com and The RAW Project will curate the Live Art Stage featuring a wide variety of street artists from around the World. The festival encourages students and emerging artists to take part in the “Emerging Artist Competition”. Wynwood Life is proud to have the Miami Art & Design Education Institute (M.A.D.E.) as the presenting sponsor, because M.A.D.E is known for elevating people’s art and design career to the next level by way of their industry-driven approach to education, through coaching, mentoring, and networking in the heart of Miami’s Art District. The Style Lounge will offer free services including nail polish changes, a braid station and Henna. The Spot Barbershop will have a pop up for the men, and stylists will showcase multiple fashion shows by local boutiques, fashion bloggers including iShine365, Dyme Lyfe, graciouslylovedllc, Koko and Palenki, to name a few.

The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The Bitter Truth will have a pop up where they’ll carve the ice for each cocktail with a chainsaw, and they will also compete against Employees Only to come up with the “Best Cocktail” at Wynwood Life.

MCCJ is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Charles Blow, New York Times Op-Ed columnist since 2008.

The Hank Meyers Award goes to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community. Past honorees of this award include Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., ABC’s John Quiñones and Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd.

Charles Blow joined The New York Times in 1994 as a graphics editor and quickly became the paper’s graphics director, a position he held for nine years. In that role, he led the publication to a best of show award from the Society of News Design for the information graphics coverage of 9/11, the first time the award had been given for graphics coverage. He also led the paper to its first two best in show awards from the Malofiej International Infographics Summit for work that included coverage of the Iraq war. Blow is the author of “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” released in September 2014. He graduated magna cum laude from Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he received a B.A. in mass communications.

MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians & Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. Join us for the closing of Pink Noise: Flexing the Frequency, the last exhibition on view at the iconic 117 Girls’ Club building in downtown Fort Lauderdale, and performance by Jen Clay.

The 117 Girls’ Club building opened in the fall of 2007, renovated for use as an unpredictable art space by local architect and designer Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio. Founded by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, and led by director Michelle Weinberg, Girls’ Club opened as the only private collection open to the public with a focus on contemporary art by women, in the world.

Throughout its 10-year history, the building has stood as a convergence point and catalyst for the growing contemporary art developments in the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County area. Its galleries have witnessed 10 major exhibitions of contemporary art, curated by emerging and mid career artists and curators. The building has hosted film screenings, artist talks, stitch and bitches, professional development workshops, experimental theatre, lectures, musical performances, parties, dinners, outreach workshops and countless student and community tours. Its walls have supported students artists, emerging artists, critically acclaimed artists, international rock star artists, both female and male. It’s doors have welcomed women, men, dogs, cats, lizards, students, children, carebears, and everything in between in an effort to fulfill its mission to educate the public, act as a resource and the nurture of the careers of contemporary female artists.

It’s almost time to ring in the New Year and Our Passion at the Trio is ready to celebrate! Chef Lobeck has created a four-course meal for all his guests to enjoy at $50 per person, which also includes a glass of wine or a glass of champagne. On December 31st, Vagabond Kitchen and Bar is offering guests two dinner seatings to ring in the New Year. The first seating, 5:30-7:00pm, is a set 3-course meal for $75 per person. The meal starts off with an Alaskan King Crab with apple cider foam, cucumber, apple, and golden osetra caviar followed by a Diver scallop served with polenta cake. The third course is delicious Surf & Turf made of prime beef tenderloin, Maine lobster, sautéed maitake mushrooms, mashed potatoes with lobster béarnaise. Guests can choose to add fresh black mashed potatoes for $15. Building CommUnity Party will Celebrate Growth of Supportive Space for Local Nonprofits!

Community residents along with local leaders across greater Miami are invited to come together for a celebratory evening at the Center for Social Change. The party is taking place on the brand new 5th floor, which is part of our Center’s expansion that has more than doubled the original co-working and event space capacity for South Florida nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. While Building CommUnity is technically free to attend, we are also fundraising for the development of a 1,500 sq. ft. outdoor patio with gorgeous, expansive views of surrounding neighborhoods. This 5th floor patio will provide a new venue for various community events, and if funds are raised in time, the goal is to open it Spring 2017. There’s a suggested “CommUnity Builder” donation of $25.00, and we’ll be engraving donor names on the patio’s railing when it’s completed.

About the Center for Social Change – Founded in Summer 2014, we house one of South Florida’s first coworking spaces and community environment for mission-driven leaders and organizations including nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. Spooky costumes, waterfront roller-skating, four incredible DJ’s, local food and drinks are all expected for this new and exciting edition of Bay Skate presented by Zignum Mezcal.

The second Halloween Edition of Bay Skate Miami is just around the corner coming up on Saturday, October 29th at Bayfront Park. On February 26th, 2015, the Macias brothers, founders of Macias Advertising, an integrated creative content & brand development advertising agency based out of Miami, launched Bay Skate Miami as a way to give locals a cool way to enjoy a Miami public park by kicking off a throwback skating and music experience at Bayfront Park’s historic Pepper Fountain captivating the city with its first edition.

At Fairchild’s Howl-o-ween guests can take advantage of a great opportunity to enjoy the Garden with their dogs as they parade through Fairchild’s lush surroundings all the while showing off their Halloween costumes. Guests and their dog can hop on any of the trams, make it a doggie tram ride! Now that’s something to wag your tail about!

Howl-o-ween Rules:
To protect our plant collections, please keep your dogs on the path or on grassy areas. Dogs are not permitted to walk onto planting beds.
Dogs must be current on all vaccinations and have a current rabies tag attached to their collar.
Dogs must be leashed at all times and under the control of their handlers. Do not unleash your dog at any time.
Dog handlers are required to clean-up after their dogs. Dog handlers must use “doggie bags” and dispose of them in the designated receptacles.

Could This be Miami’s Greatest Oktoberfest Party Yet?

With rumors vehemently circulating the industry, it would be well advised for Ladies to grab their dirndl dresses and for men to pull on their Lederhosen as the Miami Rooftop is hosting their very first Oktoberfest.

Bulks of steins have been seen being carried through Pawn Broker’s back door in anticipation of the rooftop’s latest festivities, and it has been revealed that after many late lunches and evening drinks with Miami’s finest bacon connoisseurs, the Miami Smokers & PB Station’s Chef Guillermo Concha, Chef Jose Mendin is very much prepared to host the greatest party the Miami Rooftop has seen to date. And that’s saying a lot, as previous parties have gone down in the books.

With a reputable liquor and cocktail menu, Pawn Broker are said to give a gracious nod to the alcoholic wonders Bavarian history has produced, with a refined list of Deutschland beers and other nation’s glorious ales and lagers. It’s also alleged that the Miami Rooftop will be embracing their celebrated Pawn Broker cocktails with a slight twist to the regular menu, beer being the supplementary ingredient to a collection of novel Oktoberfest cocktails.

Thursdays are known for the rooftop’s resident DJ Vinyl Night and so there is a high possibility of one or two beer spillages from all the excitement. And as Bavarian folk festivals go, they are known to be anything but tame, of which with Pawn Brokers reputation, the bar is sure to live up to it.

House of Horror, South Florida’s largest haunt experience, offers two unique haunts, a rockin’ travelling freak show, back-to-back horror movies, a freak gallery, carnival rides and the appearance of The Chainsmokers, Daya and Zara Larsson.

Adrenaline junkies will be taken through the 1455 Asylum, where people will come across what’s left of the overpopulated medical facility that has been overrun by the ghosts of mental patients. The Gates of Phobia will give people a 3D phobia encounter that will play with their senses, and back by popular demand, thrill seekers can take part in The Dark Hour, where they will walk the halls of the 1455 Asylum during a power outage between 10-11PM on Monday through Wednesday. The City of Hialeah and Sedando’s Supermarkets invite you to celebrate our rich culture during the annual Hispanic Heritage Series.
Kick-off the celebration with the grand opening of La Mano Hispana Art Exhibit on September 30th at 7pm at the Milander Center for Arts and Entertainment. The event will feature the works of 62 artists who have enriched our Hispanic culture and strengthened our communities. The exhibit will also be open from October 3rd to November 11th—Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5pm.

Dolphin Mall will be hosting its Hispanic Heritage Celebration from September 15 through October 15, offering free entertainment and discounted dining to families and friends. Craft beer lovers know that Grovetoberfest is a fun way to do some serious beer tasting of over 300 craft beers from around the world. This year, Grovetoberfest will move slightly South to Miami Marine Stadium; a move geared towards allowing more people to experience Florida’s largest beer festival. In addition, it has upped the ante by bringing a beer connoisseur on board who has been hand-selecting some of the rarest beers available for this year’s festival.

“We’re overflowing with good news. In our new home, Grovetoberfest will continue to offer local favorites and mainstream craft beers, but with a renewed focus on elite craft beers. We are working directly with the brewers to secure and reserve batches of incredibly esoteric and unique brews,” says Tony Albelo, organizer and chief sample taster for Grovetoberfest. This year, Blackberry Farms Brewery will be pouring in the VIP area. Civil Society Brewing will also be pouring at the event, making this the first time they’ve ever poured at a Miami-Dade beer fest. In addition, for the first time ever, Grovetoberfest will be pouring Prairie, Crooked Stave, To Øl, Mikkeller, and Slim Pickins. Aficionados will delight in sampling beers in the Sunshine State-of-Mind, a collection of over 40 Florida breweries including Wynwood Brewing Company, J. Wakefield Brewing, MIA Brewing, Funky Buddha, Saltwater, Banging Banjos, Due South and Biscayne Brewing, to name a few.

The new location allows for more room and easier parking. Other aspects of the festival include the VIP Lounge, which will be hosted by Chef M from Latin House Grill. In addition, it will offer certain perks not available to the general ticket holder such as specialty brews, covered seating area and air-conditioned bathrooms. The Homebrew Pavilion will showcase special brews made by passionate beer drinkers; the Food Row will offer food for purchase and the Kitchen Lab will feature beer/food pairing demonstrations by local chefs such as Ryan Martin from 180° at the DRB, and Zeke Man from 305 Brews. As usual, a Live Music Stage will feature dance-inducing music throughout the entire day.
