Marina Font:  Dark Continents
February 6 – March 29, 2014

Dina Mitrani Gallery is proud to present Marina Font’s third solo exhibition in the gallery. Her newest series consists of photo-based, mixed media works that exemplify the artist’s continued exploration of the issues of gender, identity, and the woman’s body with all its shapes, forms, cycles and capacity.  Having grown up in Argentina, a patriarchal society that placed much importance on psychoanalysis, Font learned that “Dark Continents” was how Sigmund Freud described female sexuality.  This exhibition, which includes small and large format pieces as well as installations, illustrates the many facets, scientific and emotional, of women.

Font’s photographs of the woman’s physique are printed on poly-cotton and then embroidered with thread and yarn in symbolic patterns and mounted on wooden surfaces.  At times, Font uses found objects such as doilies and buttons to represent the traditional roles of women in the home. The laborious manual application of fabrics and embroidery represent the artist’s expression of her emotional experiences.  There are various works that are a series of photographs, or installations that refer to a woman’s cycles of fertility and how the biological phases are in constant shifting evolution. In her statement, Font writes, “Through this body of work, I am interested in unveiling metaphorically the truth beneath our surface, deeper than the external body, exploring and re-tracing what was once felt by it, as well as the complex relationship between reality and the memory that lives within.”

Marina Font was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1970. She studied at the Escuela de Artes Visuales Martin A. Malharro, Argentina. She spent the summer of 1998 studying photography at Speos Ecole de la Photographie in Paris, and earned her MFA in Photography from Barry University, Miami in 2009.  She recently had solo exhibitions at The Consulate of Argentina in New York, The Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami and at Gato Gallery, Barry University. She has participated in group shows at The BOCA Museum of Art, The MoCA, North Miami, The Appleton Museum, Ocala, the Museum of Florida Arts, Deland and the Miami Center for the Photographic Arts. She was recently invited to participate in a Night at the Museum at The Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Spring Fling at Locust Projects and Abracadabra at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, FL. Her work is included in the Bunnen Collection, Atlanta, The Girl’s Club Collection, Ft. Lauderdale, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami and various important private collections.

Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, offers artists talks and lectures as well as photo-based objects and books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions.

Artists include Nestor Arenas, Randy Burman, Jacqueline Gopie, Donna Haynes, Philip Ross Munro, Lori Nozick, and Sara Stites.

The Homecoming Project enables successful members of the LGBT community to return to middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country to share their own coming out stories, and personal life lessons. Dialogues are sparked, and speakers offer inspiration to the next generation following in their footsteps.

The Gay-Straight Alliance club will welcome Davie native Tracy Wise, an accomplished advertising executive now living and working in New York City to speak at the charter school. Visual and/or literary work by the students will also be exhibited in Which Way Out.

Tuesday, February 11th through Saturday, March 29th, 2014.

Brisky Gallery Miami is proud to present Rendering Thoughts: Sublime interpretations of the mind; an exhibition curated by Luis Valle, Brisky Gallery’s Director.

The exhibit will feature works by over 19 artists both local and international. As Brisky gallery Miami is now in its second year, the portfolio has expanded to include some new faces met during the galleries tenure and Art Basel. Rendering Thoughts is a group exhibit that will showcase some of the galleries’ regular lineup along with some new artist picked up along the way. With an ever growing portfolio Brisky gallery strives to present fresh new work to the Wynwood art scene.

The artists’ mind is a curious enigma, which onlookers ponder. Who, What, Why, Where and How did the artist get to this creation are questions asked by the viewer. Each artist in the show takes a unique approach to manifesting his or her creation. The artist vision first starts as a feeling or a thought, which must then be molded and formed with physical materials in order to be born.

The show will feature a large range of photography as well as many works in painting, sculpture and new media.

The University of Miami is pleased to present Bodypaintography: An exploration of Sentiment, Composition and Body Language by Cynthia M. Fleischmann. Her exhibition will feature naked individuals formally painted and photographed into various environments to create and capture a dialogue between body and place. Her photography encourages the natural human form to be seen as a work of art, highlighting colors, patterns and messages that are found in the world around us that she paints onto the form, finalized with red hands.

Cynthia Fleischmann grew up in Küsnacht, Switzerland until she was 10, spending most of her time outdoors observing, playing sports, running around naked and drawing. Her appreciation for photography developed from her father’s love for American pioneer photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Paul Strand, whose works lined the walls of his gallery Galerie Zur Stockeregg. Moving to Dover, Massachusetts, with her mother and three older sisters imposed a new culture in which English became her prominent language. She was passionately involved in creating sets for school musicals and was nominated as most artistic in her high school. Cynthia has a drive for experimenting, and in 2009 she manifested her painting and photography passions into one art form she calls Bodypaintography. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Miami in 2010 and is completing her MFA in photography. This is her MFA Graduate exhibition.

Leonard Turkel (1930-2011) was named the ‘Father of Florida condominiums” by The Miami Herald and was also the founder of the national restaurant company, The Orange Bowl Corporation. But behind the exterior of the successful entrepreneur, Leonard Turkel had a powerful social conscience. In addition to creating the South’s first anti-segregation sit-ins, he built a legacy including proper inner-city housing and health care, mobile ophthalmology labs and the Miami Midnight Basketball League for at-risk teenagers, Leonard Turkel was an artist who created hundreds of collages and assemblages that mirror his morals of social justice. Following Your Own Sense of Justice is a retrospective of his rarely seen artwork and is a true testament to the legacy of a man that proved to be one of Miami’s greatest mavericks of civic equality and community building. Auction proceeds will be used to provide scholarships for at-risk youth.

An Evening of Art, Wine & Conversation

They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words, in which case ‘i-Miami 2013,’ Marc Schmidt’s debut photography exhibition, speaks volumes. Reminiscent of Walker, Vishniac, Atget, Lange and Arbus, Marc Schmidt’s photography is strong and thought-provoking, reflecting the zeitgeist of the postmodern World. Using the simplest of tools, his iPhone camera and his bicycle for transportation, Schmidt has created a poignant visual essay of the inner city and its denizens. Schmidt’s affinity and respect for his subject matter are evident in the narrative structure of his compositions and the intuitive poetic resonance of his imagery.

Marc Schmidt was born in Chicago and raised in Hamburg. A physician by profession, Schmidt has had a love affair with the art of photography since his teen years when he started documenting street scenes in Hamburg. Schmidt has traveled around the world capturing life in all its aspects for over a decade and has previously published his work only once; a photography essay on a refugee camp in Rwanda. Photos of the Bird Road Art Walk by Mr Q 305

There’s nothing like a cool Miami night to enjoy a stroll around the Bird Road Art District. No matter what style of art you enjoy the Bird Road Art District has it all. Add to that wine, hors d’oeuvres, Capoeira demonstrations, Cuban Rap music (raw, uncensored protest songs at their best; sung with the pain that only living under oppression can project)…and did I mention the coolest rolling art gallery you ever saw…

Miami Dade College – Museum of Art + Design
600 Biscayne Blvd.
Miami, Florida 33132

Leonard Turkel (1930 – 2011) was coined the “Father of Florida Condominiums” by The Miami Herald and is noted as the pioneer of the Florida condominium development boom. A native of Bronx, New York, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran, developer, restaurateur, businessman, and civil rights activist who played violin and guitar, pitched baseball, had a great left-handed hook shot, and created numerous collages bringing historical photographs to three dimensional form.

Following Your Own Sense of Justice is a retrospective of his rarely seen artwork and is a true testament to the legacy of a man that proved to be one of Miami’s greatest mavericks of civic equality and community building. The exhibition is more than just an presentation of one man’s avocation. It’s the portrayal of a socially conscious movement, created by a singular vision, devoted to living equally for all.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm

Virginia Poundstone: BOG—MIA
Locust Projects is pleased to present BOG-MIA, a new installation by New York-based sculptor Virginia Poundstone, known for her exquisitely crafted sculptures that examine the art historical, scientific and economic significance of flowers. The works in this exhibition take their material and formal cues from the logistical machinations of the cut flower industry in Colombia. Miami is the main point of entry for the products of this industry: retail bouquets containing carnations, roses and baby’s breath, which enter Poundstone’s practice as artifacts of a vast industrial system producing the aesthetics of popular emotion.

At Locust Projects, Poundstone describes this vast nature-transforming system through her first video installation, which she likens to a landscape painting. The impressionistic sequences, shot in fields, greenhouses and shipping facilities, set the ambiance for a series of new sculptural works consisting of printed screens, aluminum panels and eternalized flowers. The sculptures are supported by platforms made of brightly printed cardboard shipping boxes scavenged from the importer’s warehouse near Miami International Airport.

Project Room: Alan Gutierrez, Nobody knows me better than you
Locust Projects is pleased to present Nobody knows me better than you, an exhibition by Miami-based artist Alan Gutierrez. Centered around a series of paintings, the exhibition utilizes a suite of theatrical production equipment as an arbitrary means to reframe the exhibition space as a site of production. Throughout the course of the exhibition, the artist will change the installation into different iterations, embracing process and the malleable nature of rehearsal.

Average Joe Art Sale  at Yo Space on Sunday, January 5 ,2014.  I love it, they had visiting artists along with their resident artists selling limited edition prints, origianl art and wonderful merchandise ranging from $5.00 to $500.00, so you can find something no matter your budget.  While you are there, you can visit with the resident artists and see what they are currently working on in their studio. To make it even better they donated 10% of all sales to a non-profit organization , this month it was Life Is Art, Inc.

Exhibition January 4th – February 6th

Born in Panama of Chinese parents, Mai Yap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas.

Within the walls of her parents’ home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Outside those walls, her senses were overcome by the varied colors, sounds and energy of the tropics. Panama’s natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration.

Ms. Yap’s artistry led her to pursue the focus of her current work, to change the way people look at flowers –from flowers as common products of nature, to flowers as unique miracles of the earth. Through her technique of “extreme close ups,” she tries to compel the viewer to observe flowers in great detail.

Ms. Yap holds a B.A. in Journalism and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. She is currently teaching at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens.

“The color in my flowers surpasses shape and form. I hope that they will delight the viewer’s senses and enlighten the mind, bringing great enjoyment.”

Pauline A. Goldsmith has worked in the global bio-pharmaceutical industry for over 37 years, in Europe and the U.S. She now runs her own consulting company, Goldsmith Consulting, in Coconut Grove providing business development and project management skills to small and medium-sized companies. Born in the U.K., she has lived in Philadelphia, Boston and Miami.

Ms. Goldsmith is active in many volunteer positions in the local art world, both in the theater and the visual arts. She strives to help others understand the joy the arts can impart. Her love of watercolors and botanical art are a consuming part of her life.

“My love of South Florida’s lush tropical vegetation has encouraged me to use watercolors to translate their beauty to paper, so that it can be shared with everyone. In my attempts to render these plant likenesses into visual art, I have become attached to their subtle transformations in different lights.”

Fernando Vignoli was born in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 14, 1960. He studied at Colégio Militar (a high school held by the Brazilian Army) and concluded his high school education at Colégio Pitágoras where he majored in architectural design. He graduated in Visual Communication at ESAP Escola Superior de Artes Visuais (University School of Visual Arts). Vignoli’s oil paintings rife with passageways, labyrinths, doors and windows are swathed in light to symbolize the possibility of escape from an unwanted reality. His strict, structured childhood under the watchful eye of his father, an army captain, inspires many of his works.

Looking at his paintings, writes John Ensley Hooker, who contributed to a recent monograph about the artist, “is like walking through a labyrinth of walls painted by him. Either you end up in a dark corner without knowing where to go, or you discover a vibrant view of the artist’s soul.”

Schmidt has traveled around the world capturing life in all its aspects for over a decade and has previously published his work only once; a photography essay on a refugee camp in Ruanda. He has been running a successful photo rental studio in Hamburg since 2001. In 2013 he opened CU-1 Gallery in downtown Miami and has been documenting Miami street life since April of the same year.

Art of Life Film To Be Screened at Big Night in Little Haiti Friday, December 20, 2013

Friday December 20th 2013, 10:00PM – 12:00AM, Moving the Lives of Kids Art Center (MLK Mural) is pleased to present the “Art of Life” as part of Rhythm Foundation and Little Haiti Cultural Center Big Night in Little Haiti. The film will be shown at the Little Haiti Cultural Center Theater located at 212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, FL 33137.

The feature length film is the directorial debut of famed mural artist, and Executive Director of MLK Mural, Kyle Holbrook. The film screening will be followed by a special performance by Woffgang playing his original track from the score of the movie.

Many young men and women living in hoods across America suffer the absence of a path or a toolkit for survival. Sometimes that toolkit is there, but they just need a guide or an angel to show them to it. In the “Art of Life” the two lead characters Chay and Cheyanne, are looking for a way out of the suffocating pain and misery of their surroundings, but they need a plan. As both develop their artistic skills, their future prospects grow brighter, even if their present environment maintains darkness. Well they be able to escape to the light? In this story, which blends the magic of cinema, animation, sketches, paintings and music, we learn that art is all around us, and realizing this could help make survival more vividly apparent to those trapped in the dark.

Artist Kyle Holbrook directed and costarred in the film playing a magical and mythical character named “Art.” His character blurs the line of reality and is the manifestation of their inspiration, and a guide to their redemption for both lead characters.

“Art of Life” features original music by Pittsburgh native Mac Miller. The Pittsburgh musician only held one job in his life prior to becoming the famed musician and reality show star that he is today, working with MLK Mural. He helped write original music for the film, and worked behind the camera filming sections of the film.

Also costarring in the film is artist and poet Vanessa German, who plays a several roles in the film serving as a muse and inspiration for the characters.

This unique organic and artistic film features scenes shot inside a County Jail, in the middle of the marches during the G20 Summit, and on site during the production of
several MLK Mural Projects around the world. “Art of Life” also features several original pieces by MLK Mural artists woven into scenes as animation.

Audiences will be blown away by the unique and organic process of writing and directing, and will be wowed by this artfully crafted film. There will be a special musical performance following the film by Woffgang presenting an original track from the soundtrack of the film. Art world, immerse yourself within it. www.artoflifethemovie.com

Pérez Art Museum Miami Kicks Off Third Thursdays Music Series with Los Angeles-Based duo Nguzunguzu

Every third Thursday of the month, PAMM brings together an eclectic range of internationally-acclaimed DJs and musicians for an outdoor music series on the terrace by the bay. The evening series, 6-9pm, kicks off with a focus on experimental sounds and diverse cross-genre dance music. Nguzunguzu offers a unique blend of R&B, rap, club, house, kuduro, and grime. Free with museum admission. Drink specials and light bites by Verde restaurant and bar.

Nguzunguzu’s (pronounced en-goo-zoo-en-goo-zoo) otherworldly productions weave energetic polyrhythms, eerie melodies, and dramatic soundscapes to create a new emotive electronic club realm that is sad, sexy, and scary. Raised on 90s R&B/Hip-Hop radio and underground club music, the Los Angeles based duo (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) dig deep to complement the explicitly experimental modern sounds of international club music with some of the freshest urban pop happening now.

Nguzunguzu, which takes its name from a traditional Solomon Island figurehead used to protect against supernatural forces during canoe trips, offers a unique blend of R&B, rap, club, house, kuduro, and grime.

You And I Art Love Mission: “You And I Are Love is an emerging organization that caters to the local Miami art community and working towards spreading our work globally. Our mission is to give back through the power of art. Seeking emerging, talented artists in our community and giving them a platform to exhibit, sell, express their artistic, civic and educational abilities. Our commitment is to create a monthly art show for the local artist to exhibit their art work without charging them a fee and not taking commission from the art sold at our shows, aid in their involvement and bring an enjoyable art experience to our community. We are also working towards creating a positive outlet for children and adults through art therapy and art workshops—to hospitals, schools, cultural art centers and events. We believe love and art set the spirit free and bring us together as one human family because, you and I are love. Join us, together we can spread love through art.”

Photographs of Absolut Night Court on 12/7/13

Absolut Night Court, a showcase of Miami’s best Bloody Marys featuring unique recipes by a team of celebrated local mixologists. Oceanfront between 21st and 22nd street.

This December, Los Angeles-based artist Ry Rocklen unveils his installation Night Court, produced in collaboration with Absolut as the setting for a pop-up art bar during Art Basel in Miami Beach. Night Court is at once a bar, a performance venue, a sports arena and a showroom for Rocklen’s new line of furniture, ‘Trophy Modern’.

Night Court is the latest and most ambitious incarnation of a project that began in 2011 when Rocklen came across a haul of second-hand sports trophies for sale in a thrift store. Rocklen spends a lot of time in junk shops and flea markets, trawling for those objects that were once cherished but which are now almost at the end of their lives. In the purgatory of the second-hand store, these ex-possessions have one last chance to be valued again.

Photographs of Amber Arbucci The Girl at Jellyfish Lake on 12/8/13

Supermodel Amber Arbucci “The Girl at Jellyfish Lake” collection at the exclusive Ocean House Residences on Miami Beach. The collection displays a surrealistic underwater encounter of a Victoria Secret Model and 5 million jellyfish.  These are are self shot and absolutely beautiful and amazing.

Amber Abucci is a fashion model, wildlife photographer/artist who brings beauty, boldness and discipline to everything she does. “I am not interested in just taking a ‘good picture.’ I want my photographs to draw people into the worlds I’ve visited, to join me on my journeys.” And what journeys they are. Deep oceans, thick jungles, wide savannahs, daunting mountains – and the wildlife that populates them – all speak to the soul of this dynamic young adventure photographer as she travels the world.

Owner iStar Residential has captured intimate, resort-like living in the South of Fifth neighborhood with Ocean House’s 28 beachfront homes, including beach front residences exceeding 6,000 square feet. The property’s limited availability, backyard oasis of sand and ocean, and easy access to South Beach’s renowned culture and nightlife make Ocean House one of the world’s most desirable addresses. A multi-million dollar redesign by designer Alison Antrobus preserves Ocean House’s historic integrity – original structure built in 1946 – while transforming its common areas into those of a private residence. The property features world-class amenities as well as exclusive services and perks that offer residents a unique, customized experience in a gracious, residential setting.

Dutch artists and the biggest names in street art: The London Police, Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman and Hass & Hahn – Favela/Philly painting transformed an empty 12,000 square foot lot at 250 NW 24th street into a garden of murals. Additional international artists: X-O, Max Zorn, Amanda Marie, Anthony Lister, Ben Eine and Buff Monster.

A collaborative project featuring world class street and graffiti artists from the Netherlands: The London Police, Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman and Hass & Hahn – Favela/Philly painting and their international peers will work together to create a garden of murals in the lot on 250 NW 24th Street in Wynwood. The mural installation begins November 28 and ends with a celebration on December 6, 2013.

As an inaugural project, event and a Dutch initiative, Caleidoscoop is working directly with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York is contributing with the specific purpose to produce a “satellite fair” that the Consulate can be exceedingly proud of and to demonstrate the ways in which cultural collaborations and contributions of the Dutch can be made during the highly-profiled December Art Fair week.

The lot of 250 NW 24th street is empty now, but will soon be the home of a new 11-unit live/work space and the first development to break ground in the popular community since 2006. The motivation behind 250 Wynwood is “to create a neighborhood so people can keep creating and growing” a fitting mantra for this inaugural event that showcases international cultural involvement and collaboration.

Providing artistic and curatorial support, Caleidoscoop is partnering with Kallenbach Gallery, Andenken and Unruly, three of the most respected galleries in the Netherlands. The promotion and organization of Caleidoscoop is made possible with the efforts of a number of entities. Largely the brainchild of Made Creative, a Dutch nonprofit and Catapult 13, a Miami based design firm, Caleidoscoop has the long term goal of being an annual event in Miami to showcase the extensive art and design talent of the Netherlands.

Guiri Reyes is a self-taught Brazilian artist that started his photography journey at twelve years old with his first digital camera. Working hard at his craft, his particular view of the light through the camera lens set his course to the fusion of steady and moving images into art expression. Through photography and video Guiri shows techniques that reflect his life experiences and upbringing in a small and rural beach village in Brazil. In Praia do Rosa, Santa Catarina nature’s true colors connect with the rich spiritual oriental philosophy practiced by his family, that contrasts with the urban and material world he has been exposed to while traveling and working with many world known photographers throughout his career.

DEAN PROJECT is pleased to present Supernatural: Religious, Theological & Spiritual Leaders, an exhibition of new paintings by Bryan Drury. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery and features eight oil-on-wood paintings, consisting of seven portraits and one painting of the natural world Arising from a broad interest in the ubiquity of religion and the belief in the innate divinity of humans, to create this series Drury met with diverse religious, spiritual, and theological leaders from around the world. The resulting work brings together an eclectic range of venerated leaders who are believed, within their distinctive faith traditions and philosophies, to possess a unique capacity to understand or connect with the divine realm.
Bryan Drury, Rabbi Saul Kassin

Employing the same highly detailed realism found in his other works, Drury exploits the oil-paint medium to meticulously render the topography and organic quality of the sitters’ flesh, contrasting their physicality with the divine nature that they embody within their respective traditions. In his painting of Rabbi Saul Kassin, every wrinkle and hair follicle is exposed in the face of the rabbi, who gazes nobly and pensively at the viewer. The soft creases in the skin of Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa, a Buddhist leader who studied under the Dalai Lama, highlight the tactility of the sitter’s skin, calling attention to the mortal aspect of his being.

In these seven portraits, Drury further explores his interest in the human desire to transcend our animal nature, an idea he also investigated in his previous work. He exposes the disconnect between the corporeality of the body and the abstraction of identity, which exists across cultures, religions, and societies.

Red-Tail, which depicts a hawk devouring its prey, captures the mortality of life in the animal world, creating a striking contrast with the high finish and immortal nature of the portraits.
Portraits in Drury’s ongoing series of Religious, Theological and Spiritual Leaders currently include:
-Archbishop Thomas Wenski, Catholic Church (Miami, FL)
-Imam Shamsi Ali, Islamic Cultural Center and Muslim Scholar (New York, NY)
-Karen Berg, Kabbalah Center (Los Angeles, CA)
-Baraka, Maasai Tribal Chief (Tanzania Africa)
-Rabbi Saul Kassin, Chief Rabbi and Spiritual Leader, Syrian Sephardic Jewish Congregation (Brooklyn, NY)
-Wally Youvella, Hopi Kiva Indian Chief and Clan Leader (Hopi Reservation, Arizona)
-Swami Bhodayan Maharaja, Hindu Senior Devotee and First Guru (Badger, CA)
-Spiritual Leader Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa, Buddhist and the most senior scholar below His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama (Redding, CT)
Bryan Drury, Imam Shamsi Ali

Bryan Drury was born in 1980 in Salt Lake City, Utah and relocated to New York in 2001. He received his MFA Cum Laude from the New York Academy of Art in 2007 and his BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art in 2005. He has exhibited and received awards throughout the US and Europe. Among his recent highlights, Drury had a solo museum exhibition at The Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College in 2010, and The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, selected Drury for their highly prestigious annual Invitational Exhibition 2011. The artist was profiled in the April 2011 issue of The Art Economist magazine’s "Artist To Watch" section. Drury’s painting Ali was included in the exhibition "Now WHAT?" at the Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach FL, the curators from the Norton Museum selected Ali as one of the twenty most engaging works exhibited during 2010 Art Basel Miami Beach. The artist was reviewed by Ken Johnson for The New York Times Art in Review on February 3, 2012.

2100 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139

A special evening program with live performances, as part of the Public sector. Curated by Nicholas Baume, Director & Chief Curator, Public Art Fund, New York.

Kate Gilmore has created ‘Only One Like You’, a new performance that builds on themes introduced in her 2011 Public Art Fund project.

Taking the basic elements of human presence and bodily movement as his raw materials, Ryan McNamara’s new performance ‘Uncanny Liquidity’ intends to tweak perceptions and provoke curiosity.

For ‘Smoke Grid’ Olaf Breuning will simultaneously set off smoke canisters to create a sea of colored smoke.

A new sound installation by Mungo Thomson will be created that evening. Four musicians playing different instruments – clarinet, flute, violin and percussion – will imitate the song of crickets.

For the fourth performance of the evening, entitled ‘Santa Confessional’, David Colman installs a classic Catholic confessional within Collins Park for people to confess their sins and ask for absolution.

James Capper “Ripper Tooth”
Exhibition runs 1 -  21st December.

‘Art Britannia’ explores contemporary practice from UK with an emphasis on painting and craft. The exhibition features a ‘mini show within a show’, taken directly from The Lion and Lamb Gallery’s ‘Summer Saloon’ exhibition. The Lion and Lamb is an artists run space, located in the back of an East End pub.

Art Britannia artists include: Charlie Billingham, James Capper, Gordon Cheung, Freya Douglas-Morris, Brad Grievson, Sam Jury, Hannah Knox, Mary Ramsden, John Robertson, Guy Rusha, Dolly Thompsett, Rebecca Ackroyd, Eleanor Moreton, Henny Acloque and Grant Foster.

Curated by Ben Austin (London) and produced by Karelle Levy (Miami).
This show is made possible with the support of Miami Design District, Dacra, Hendrick’s Gin, The British Shop, The British American Business Council, Artlyst, Llanllyr Source, HSBC, Fluff PR, and KRELwear.

British art has always had a distinctive quality perhaps stemming from the mix of post-Empire eclecticism with a touch of eccentricity.

The British are well known for having an idiosyncratic penchant for experimentation and exploration. In art throughout the 20th Century the British have constantly pushed boundaries be it with the advent of Modernism through to the beginnings of Pop, with artists like Richard Hamilton, David Hockney and Sir Peter Blake before the genre took off to New York with Warhol and Co.  This set up a cultural dialogue between the old and new worlds, which still exists today.

By the 70’s and 80’s British artists continued be progressive and taboo breaking with the likes of Gilbert and George becoming ‘living sculptures’ and are now considered ‘national treasures’.  By the 90’s a new wave of artists appear on the scene, graduates from Goldsmiths with plenty of attitude and with the backing of the Charles Saatchi become universally known as the yBas (Young British Artists). Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas grabbed headlines with art that shocked and amazed in equal measure. Pickled sharks and unmade beds surrounded by detritus created a new visual language laced with Post-Modern motifs. This art was bursting with bravado and possessed a visceral quality that demanded attention.

Twenty-five years on, ‘Art Britannia’ takes a rather different view. This is an exhibition that proudly celebrates craft, technical skill, mark making and gestures.  An art with an alternative aesthetic, where the process is critical to the practice, be it through the act of painting or through considered constructions.

‘Art Britannia’ has no over arching theme, no curatorial dictate, merely a commitment to work that reflects a subtle yet seismic shift in British contemporary practice.  Here we have bold and elemental abstractions, richly saturated landscapes, nude figure painting, romantic visions, unsettling video work and a mechanical construct.

The group is a healthy mix of slightly older, more established artists together with the next generation of recent graduates who are already appearing in important collections and shows.

Tenth Annual Breakfast in the Park at the Frost Art Museum 12/8/13

Tenth Annual Breakfast in the Park at the Frost Art Museum
Sunday, December 8, 2013, from 9:30 am to noon.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum
10975 SW 17th St.
Miami FL 33199

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, this year in partnership with West Kendall Baptist Hospital, celebrates Art Basel Miami Beach with its tenth annual Breakfast in the Park, on Sunday, December 8, 2013, from 9:30 am to noon. Guests will enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, relax and sip Korbel Champagne Mimosas on the terrace, hear a stimulating talk by the featured sculptor and take guided tours of the Sculpture Park, as well as the exhibitions in the Museum.

This year’s featured sculptor is John Henry. This renowned American artist has long been recognized for his ability to transform the simplest of forms into complex visual statements. Whether they are situated in the land or as part of a cityscape, John Henry’s monumental abstract sculptures challenge notions of balance and equilibrium. A formalist at heart, his concern for line, shape and form is essential to the structure that is the basis of his work and the varied angles that define their recognizable configuration. Although the shapes in John Henry’s works may appear as simple elements arranged like pick-up-sticks, there is no doubt that the concepts that drive his constructions are complex, and the visual experience enhanced by their energy.

Born in 1943, Henry received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and an Honorary Doctor of the Arts from the University of Kentucky. He has received numerous awards, including the Governor’s National Award in the Arts from the State of Kentucky.

John Henry has been an active participant in promoting the arts, serving on the Board of Trustees of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, and the Board of the International Sculpture Center, where he held various leadership roles, including Chairman. Henry was a founding member of ConStruct, the artist-owned gallery that promotes and organizes large-scale sculpture exhibitions in the U.S.

His works grace many public and private collections around the U.S., Europe and Asia, and are included in the collections of the British Museum, London; the Dallas Museum; MOCA, Chicago; and the Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. The Frost Art Museum and The Sculpture Park at FIU have several of his works in their collections and on display.

The Frost Art Museum is delighted to partner with West Kendall Baptist Hospital to bring Breakfast in the Park to our community. This innovative partnership assists both our organizations with the important task of inspiring and educating our community toward an appreciation for the arts, and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Our new coalition, “Healthy West Kendall,” aims to use our collective resources to influence and improve health outcomes in the area we serve. This overarching goal will be accomplished by engaging our community in initiatives that advocate for active living, healthy lifestyle and community well-being.

Breakfast in the Park guests are also invited to view the six current exhibitions on view at the Frost Art Museum:
• Things that Cannot be Seen Any Other Way: The Art of Manuel Mendive
• Humberto Castro: Tracing Antilles
• Crisis and Commerce: World’s Fairs of the 1930s
• Eternal Cuba: The Darlene M. and Jorge M. Pérez Collection at FIU
• Deep Blue by Javier Velasco
• Alberto Baraya’s Naturalism/Artificiality: Expeditions, and Research of the Herbarium of Artificial Plants
Breakfast in the Park is held the final day of Art Basel Miami Beach. County buses will offer free transportation for Art Basel patrons and the general public, leaving from the Miami Beach Convention Center at 9:30 am, and leaving the Frost Art Museum for the return trip to Miami Beach at 11:30 am. For further information or to make a reservation to attend, please call 305.348.2890.

Common Ground 2nd Annual LAB Miami Group Art Show

Artist-members from The LAB Miami will collaborate to present Common Ground, the 2nd Annual LAB Miami Group Art Show. The show will ask viewers to explore the commonalities between diverse mediums of art through the lens of sustainability.

By day, these artists are coworkers, grinding away on their individual artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors. But by night, they all heed to the same call of the artist inside them. Their collaboration represents both a meeting of the minds and an exposé of the souls.

With the newly renovated IdeaGarden as backdrop, these artists have chosen to use their artistic expression as a means to create awareness around sustainability and environmental revitalization. The exploration unfolds through the colorful shades of Weinbach’s paintings; [selfies]’ mesmerizing audio-visuals; the timelessness of Ayubi’s images; the fleeting and yet vividly reminiscent nature of Fail’s work; to the vibrant threads on Vividly’s “canvas”; the ingenuity of Vanilla Shake’s message; the inspiration from Fernandez’ words; and the comforting setting created from Lewis’ vision.

For These artists, art is more than just creative expression. It’s a living and a way of life.

For These Artists, art is more than something to be admired. It’s a tool for creating change.

For These Artists, art is more than a manipulation of elements. It’s a emblem of their blood, sweat, and tears.

And These artists are:

Matthew Lewis

Vividly (Sabrina Scandar presenting Rosie Brown, Pamela Gallegos, and Corey Hunter)

Photographs of Miami Reggae Festival at Peacock Park on 11/23/13

Miami Reggae Festival at Peacock Park on  Saturday, November 23, 2013.  What a wonderful event; the music was amazing along with the great crowd, food and vendors what a great event.

The Reason:  “As Rockers Movement move forward, we begin a new element to feeding the world vision as needs of the poor increase at home and abroad. Countries and cultures amass daily more stress, starvation, inhumane conditions, whilst at home wasted resources and manpower needed to address worldwide starvation depend on votes and self-gratification. It’s not merely hunger, it’s starvation and the world feels it. Because of you, our audience, Rockers Movement give hope to those in desperate need. You do something bold each time, you join us in support to end extreme hunger and poverty. As Nelson Mandela said it’s not natural it is man made and we can end it. We can overcome it by acts of human kindness. Your ongoing support extends a hand of fellowship and encouragement to those whose lives are touched by your donations and consideration. As our effort to represent you, the Rockers Movement audience continue worldwide, we do our part in Miami with our call to action on November 23rd with the Miami Reggae Festival. Our sincere thanks to those who have so thoughtfully provided your ongoing gift of support and understanding your aid in leaving a legacy of love to last for generations. On behalf of all who have helped, thank you. We look forward to a continued partnership as we seek to bring benefactors and recipients to a closer union. From the bottom of Rockers Movement hearts…THANK YOU so much. One Love, One Heart, One Aim, One Destiny. Keep on Rocking!”

Opening Reception: Tuesday, December 3rd 7-11pm
Art Basel Wynwood Reception: Saturday, December 7th 7-11pm
Brisky BBQ: Sunday, December 8th 4-9pm

This exhibition will showcase a myriad of unique art that will reflect a diverse approach at creating work influenced by urban settings. Come have a fun night of artistic discussions, meet interesting people, listen to great music and have some drinks. Brisky Gallery is the place to be at during Miami Art Week.

The exhibit will feature works by over 20 artists local, national and international. It will include a large yet cohesive range of work from paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture and new media. “Affiliated”, is a result of the current movement in art, which reflects on the urban experience. Artists are affiliated but not limited only by crews, peers, countries, medium, sponsors, galleries and friends. Without this an artist job is much more difficult. This reflects on the old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Every connection leads to a new adventure and is part of the process of the artist’s creation. This exhibit brings to Miami a solid lineup of artists who have a diverse background of both urban and fine artwork. Each artist is well known in their respective circles yet somehow were all affiliated by a different source.

Portable Editions Vol. 1 is a curated, movable installation and exhibition space that showcases limited editions and one-of-a-kind artworks by ArtCenter/South Florida resident artists and alumni. This project creates an exhibition space outside the traditional gallery model and actively engages questions about art and commerce from a conceptual, informal, paired down, and portable space. Architect and artist Louisa Van Leer has designed the mobile installation, an initiative of Remarkable Projects, an artistic collaboration between Juana Meneses and Leila A. Leder Kremer.

Between Walls by Juan López VIP Breakfast Reception (by invitation)
Saturday, December 7, 9 am – 12 pm
In partnership with Acción Cultural Española and Bass Museum of Art
On view through January 12, 2014
ArtCenter’s Richard Shack Gallery, 800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Juan López’s work explores the aesthetic possibilities of the urban environment, playing with spaces, mixing video projections and installations, designing complex iconic buildings and changing the perception of the architecture. In Between Walls, he introduces the pedestrian mall into the gallery in one piece while exposing the exhibition and its visitors through another. By extending drawing onto the gallery’s architecture, López manipulates the interior of the space. These interventions that modify the established could be considered a form of poetic resistance.

Distant Bats for Skip Snow Opening Reception 11/26/13

Distant Bats (for Skip Snow) Opening Reception + more
distantpartsTuesday, November 26 at 7pm
ArtCenter’s Listening Gallery
810 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, FL 33139

ArtCenter, AIRIE, and Irreversible Magazine join Subtropics.org in celebration of the sound installation, Distant Bats (for Skip Snow). The opening reception will take place tomorrow starting at 7pm in the lobby of ArtCenter’s 810 building.

Distant Bats (for Skip Snow) is a minimal sound installation project featuring bat calls recorded by Gustavo Matamoros in the Everglades National Park. In the installation, these calls are intended to function as impulse responses for the acoustic activation of natural resonance in the reverberant environment that contains it. For this Listening Gallery version, its natural resonances are also artificially enhanced.

Copies of Irreversible Magazine will be available during the reception, some containing a simpler version of the installation in CD format accompanying an article by David Dunn.

2nd Annual Pop-Up Piano Miami Preview Mixer at Miami Iron Side on Monday, November 25, 2013.

Pop-Up Piano Mission:  “Injecting infectious sounds into South Florida’s live music scene.”

Please feel free to download and share.}

PRESS RELEASE
Pop-Up Piano Miami hosted its second annual Piano Preview Mixer on Monday, November 25 at Miami Iron Side in anticipation for its main events presented by The Related Group during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach. Anyone in Miami looking for the perfect nexus of art and music needed not look further than last night’s Pop-Up Piano Miami Preview Mixer.

The chic venue at Miami Iron Side was adorned with the nearly completed, painted pianos from this year’s participating PUPM artists. Artists Chor Boogie, Evoca 1, Nate Dee, Tomas Loewy, and Rone mingled with guests as they showcased their creations. KIND Healthy Snacks, Onli Beverages, Popsicleta, and Burgers & Beer joint food truck provided tasty treats, while Bombay Sapphire Martini hosted an interactive create-your-own cocktail experience. Danceable beats filled the room by DJ Thizz and DJ Knockers, building the anticipation for performances by Suenalo and students of PUPM beneficiary Guitars Over Guns.

In addition to music and art, jewelry designer Tiffany Ortiz from TAudrey showcased her original PUPM necklace, which was created to help raise awareness about the project. As the night progressed, more and more guests were decked out in their new TAudrey accessory.

The crowd came to a silence as the students of Guitars Over Guns took the stage. Santamaria Arocho played an acoustic cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, Biana Manzanares recreated “When I’m Gone” by Anna Kendrick as seen in the movie Pitch Perfect, and Rody Lafrance performed his own solo arrangement of Beatles songs.

Following the students, Raquel Sofia continued to drive the musical momentum with her energetic performance. Finally, Suenalo took the stage. The band ignited the room into a dancing frenzy, as sharp Latin horn stabs punctuated the cool air flowing through the Little River warehouse venue. The evening was a true celebration of art, charity, and music, especially since Suenalo members are also mentors for the Guitars Over Guns students.

The Piano Preview Mixer has set the tone for the upcoming PUPM’s Hyde & Seek Pop-Up Concert Series presented by The Related Group. Stay tuned for announcements regarding concert performers and dates. To learn more about PUPM, please visit www.popuppianomia.com. To learn more about Guitars Over Guns, please visit www.guitarsoverguns.org.

5:30 to 7 p.m. for VIP Maserati Toast
Maserati North America will host the VIP Toast at PAMM just before the Museum welcomes members and Art Basel VIPS for the special opening celebration and Maserati VIP Lounge experience. The event will also present The Ghibli, Maserati’s latest car to revolutionize the luxury automobile industry by defining “accessible luxury.” Serving as the museum’s opening party, PAMM Presents LOS JAICHACKERS, the evening will debut a new project, Night Shade/Solanaceae, featuring sculpture, video, and music.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) celebrates its first Miami Art Week in its new, state-of-the-art facility with a special opening celebration featuring a major performance by multimedia art collaborative LOS JAICHACKERS. For this one-night-only performance titled Night Shade/Solanaceae, LOS JAICHACKERS will transform the museum into a site of cultural collisions through musical performances, video and sculpture.

Created in response to Miami’s unique cultural and visual landscape, LOS JAICHACKERS’ Night Shade/Solanaceae will include two new videos and enlist the musical talents of TOTAL FREEDOM (Los Angeles), DJ LENGUA (Los Angeles) and Los Master Plus (Guadalajara, Mexico). TOTAL FREEDOM combines solid club beats with his own global and freeform sensibilities, and Los Master Plus is a duo that covers contemporary songs by über pop bands such as Daft Punk, Radiohead, No Doubt and Dr. Dre in Spanish, reworking them through the unique musical styles of techno-cumbia. LOS JAICHACKERS will debut a new video, which was shot in Miami, with live musical accompaniment on a stage set that combines ideas of contraband and piracy within contemporary culture, music and art. This set is comprised of massive ice sculptures that derive their form from the sound systems of Jamaica, South America and Mexico. These sculptures will slowly melt away over the course of the evening, revealing mysterious packages and strange, exotic night fruits. In addition, a series of sculptures, which refer to the anti-pirating messages for Louis Vuitton goods found at local swap meets, will be displayed inside the museum.

LOS JAICHACKERS is a collaboration between Eamon Ore-Giron and Julio Cesar Morales, artists based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. As part of their multifaceted practice, they collaborate with other artists and musicians to produce programs that ‘trace the global DNA of emerging musical subcultures in Latin America, the border, the United States and abroad.’ Their piece, Night Shade/Solanaceae, has been specially commissioned by PAMM for its inaugural opening and is the first program of the Museum’s new time-based arts initiative.

On View: December 2, 2013 – January 24, 2014

Primary Projects (“PRIMARY”), an ambitious platform for contemporary artists and curators, presents Contender, new works from Kenton Parker during Art Basel Miami. In a solo show dedicated to self-portraiture through sculpture, painting, installation and photography, the artist challenges the viewer with a swell of raw emotions. On location at Milk Studios (Los Angeles), Parker calls on long-time friend and photographer, Patrick Hoelck, to capture the madness that makes-up the artist’s multiple personalities. Parker tacked on the roles of producer, director, editor and subject for this exhibition, exposing his various states of being behind and in front of the lens. Contender is the most extensive, self-referential and personal body of work of Parker’s career, revealing a narrative that ultimately speaks to the human condition.

“Kenton Parker is a contender in every sense of the word,” said Books Bischof, PRIMARY founder and curator. “The purity of Parker is what makes him such a precious commodity. This exhibition contains an opportune moment to encounter the extensive character make-up of this uniquely creative eccentric.”

Parker’s self-portraits challenge the boundaries between artist and subject in a process where he meticulously sketches and storyboards each photo shoot of himself. Scenarios, among others, include fighting, purging, nudity and apathy – plots so universal and powerfully executed that in pieces such as “From Bad to Worse” or “We Both Knew This Was Coming,” the line between how the artist is feeling and what he is staging is easily blurred.

In “Always Sorry,” a lush installation that takes on the form and function of a flower boutique, Parker creates a unique opportunity to engage audiences with a poetic, intimate, living object. The life cycle of the flower traces the growth, beauty, decomposition and death as a ritual of existence. On a journey that asks viewers to become acutely aware of their own humanity, Parker invites them to relive their memories in his safe space at PRIMARY.

PRIMARY Opens New Gallery Space in Downtown Miami
Curated by Cristina Gonzalez, Typoe and Books Bischof, Contender will inaugurate PRIMARY’s new Downtown Miami 5,000-sq. ft. space. Officially opening its doors to the public on Monday, December 2, the reception is slated for Friday, December 6 to coincide with the area’s monthly ArtWalk. PRIMARY’s relocation to Downtown is one of several organizations finding inspiration in the city center, including the Perez Art Museum of Miami, a satellite space by the Wolfsonian Museum, DWNTWN Arthouse, Dimensions Variable and more. A trolley operated by the Downtown Development Authority will shuttle visitors to and from Miami Beach during December art fair week. For more information about navigating Downtown Miami, please visit www.miamidda.com.

Miami, FL 33132
Please RSVP for this event no later than Monday, November 25 th to Yanet at (305) 373-KIDS (5437) ext 112 or yanet@miamichildrensmuseum.org.

Miami Children’s Museum, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, and International Artist Victor Matthews will collaborate in creating a permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at the Museum’s Watson Island location during this year’s Art Basel.

International artist Victor Matthews serves on the board of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in New York and has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in the US and abroad, including the 48th Venice Biennale, Museum Sala Uno (Rome), Stephen Wirtz Gallery (San Francisco), Perry Rubenstein Gallery (New York), Space SBH Gallery (St Barths) and The Sculpture Center (New York). Most recently, his work was chosen as part of a two-person exhibition for the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013. The work and the show then travelled to the BOCA Museum of Art from July-Sept 2013. At this years Art Basel Miami Victor will unveil a sculpture of his own and work alongside Rush Philanthropic and MCM education teams and youth in both NYC and Miami to create a permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at MCM.

Founded by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons, Rush Philanthropic is dedicated to providing inner-city youth with significant exposure and access to the arts, and to providing exhibition opportunities to emerging and underrepresented artists. Rush’s education programs (Rush Toddlers, Kids, and Teens, and Rush Gallery in the Schools) directly serve over 2,900 students each year. Victor and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation are excited to partner with Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) in order to further our collective mission of engaging and educating youth through art.

“It’s great for Rush to have likeminded partners like Miami Children’s Museum. This collaboration not only allows Rush’s NYC students and their Miami peers to create a sculpture celebrating their mutual communities,” says Russell Simmons, Rush Philanthropic Co-Founder, “but it also promotes the importance of arts education during Art Basel, the biggest annual arts celebration in the country”.

In the weeks leading up to Art Basel Miami 2013, Victor Matthews will work with three groups of students to collaborate on an 8-foot sculpture inspired by his own work. Rush’s NYC students will use found items and imagery from their own NYC neighborhoods. Victor Matthews will then work with students from Miami Children’s Museum after school program to create their portion of the sculpture representative of themselves, their city, and culture; Miami sessions will be held at Miami Children’s Museum and at a local Rush partner school, the New World School. Miami sessions will be held during the week of November 18th. The sculpture will be part of MCM’s permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at the Museum’s Watson Island location.

Victor Matthews and the Rush Philanthropic Education team will also support Miami Children’s Museum’s ArtKids at Art Basel Miami Beach Convention Center location. From mixed media to building blocks and beyond, a variety of art exploration stations will be available for budding young artists to create their own original works of art. Participating children there will have the opportunity to create sculpture and other artworks inspired by the work of NYC and Miami students.

“Our partnership with Rush Philanthropic is a perfect example of how we can bring creativity and appreciation of the art world to all the children and families we come into contact with,” states Deborah Spiegelman, Executive Director and CEO of Miami Children’s Museum. “We look forward to more projects like this one in the future.”

Angel Otero: Art on the Move
Bus routes throughout Miami Beach: BM-120, S-119
Metro Rail: Government Center Stop

Now celebrating its 15th year presenting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to announce artist Angel Otero has been commissioned to create a work for Art on the Move, part of Locust Projects’ ongoing public commissions initiative. The New York based Puerto Rican artist embeds personal history in his densely stratified abstract paintings. Otero’s investigational process begins with thickly layered compositions painted on large planes of glass. These “oil skins” are then scraped off in sheets and draped onto canvas, revealing layers of under painting and distorting the original image. Otero’s artwork will appear on the backs of Miami Beach buses and at Miami Metro Rail stops in December 2013.
Art on the Move features specially commissioned artists’ projects in public spaces around Miami. Through this effort, new work by artists such as Nicole Eisenman, Agustina Woodgate and Liam Gillick has appeared on billboards, bus shelters and bus backs throughout the county.

The 2013 Moksha Art Fair coincides with Art Basel Miami Beach, a city-wide, world-class art expo. This premier showcase features an eclectic array of visual art, live music and distinctive presentations.

The 5th Annual Moksha Art Fair “Return to the Dreamtime” refers to Aboriginal mythology that aligns consciousness and communal connections through plants, animals, locations and certain tribal rituals. This year we are honored to welcome back Alex Grey, Allyson Grey, Mark Henson and other national and international artists for exclusive exhibits, panel discussions and live painting. In addition, we will feature a tribute to Terrence McKenna and the 20th Anniversary of his ground-breaking presentation of Alien Dreamtime.

The Moksha Art Fair is a nexus for local and international visionary artists, collectors and admirers to explore the inner dimensions of creativity through art and music. The term “Moksha” translates to “liberation” and “enlightenment”. The Moksha Family Arts Collective is comprised of established and emerging artists, musicians, performers and technicians. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to share in the experience and be part of the magic!

We invite you to attend the entire event: artist lectures, panel discussions, gallery exhibitions and multi-media performances throughout the week.

The Russian Pavilion is a juried exhibition showcasing emerging, mid- career and established artists from Russia, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Baltic regions during leading international fairs of contemporary and modern art. The Russian Pavilion is envisioned as a forum for critics, collectors and connoisseurs to view the works and to have a unique possibility to meet some of the artists in person.

Several cultural institutions in the United State supported the idea of Russian Pavilion and became its cultural partners, including the Museum of Russian Art (New Jersey), the Kolodzei Art Foundation, Kavachnina Contemporary, Northern Cross and the Russian American Cultural Center.

Such presentations of Russian culture abroad are certainly not new. Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) was one of the first advocates for Russian art and culture abroad. The 1907 Russian Seasons Abroad tour was a sensation for European audiences and a triumph for Russian art. The Russian Pavilion continues the tradition of Russian Seasons into the 21st century by presenting contemporary living artists from different locations.

The inaugural Russian Pavilion NY also coincided with the centennial of the famous 1913 New York Armory Show which introduced the American public to European avant-garde painting and sculpture, including works by such European modernists as Paul Cezanne, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin and others. Initiator of the Russian Pavilion Artem Mirolevich and Valery Yershov – two artists of contrasting styles and personalities – contribute to the spirit of the Armory Show centennial in New York by continuing the introduction of international artists to the American public.

The artists range widely in age and country of origin. They cover several generations, from Ernst Neizvestny (1925) to Sasha Meret (1955), Igor Vishnyakov (1968), Igor Molochevsky (1976), Blue Noses Group (founded in 1999 by Viacheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov) and others.

Coming from different backgrounds and now residing in the United States, Europe and Russia emerging and well-known artists experiment with traditional and new media in search for self-expression and a unique creative vision. Russian Pavilion features paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, photography, video installations and performances and strives for highest quality and originality.

Russian Pavilion embraces Russian culture in the United States plus cultural and historical memory and intercultural interpretations. Some of the artworks presented in the show strike and amaze the viewer’s imagination, emphasizing their unique-subjective human essence, with meaning shifting just beneath the surface. The juxtaposition and collision of different artistic individualities, styles and media make the Russian Pavilion of great interest to today’s public.

Juan López
Presented in partnership with Acción Cultural Española(AC/E) and the Bass Museum of Art
On View November 16, 2013 – January 12, 2014

Juan López’ work explores the aesthetic possibilities of the urban environment, playing with spaces, mixing video projections and installations, designing complex iconic buildings and changing the perception of the architecture. In Between Walls, he introduces the pedestrian mall into the gallery in one piece while exposing the exhibition and its visitors through another. By extending drawing onto the gallery’s architecture, López manipulates the interior of the space. These interventions that modify the established could be considered a form of poetic resistance.

Photographs from the 2nd Annual Art of Transformation in Opa Locka on 11/15/13

2nd Annual Art of Transformation: Celebrating The New Opa-Locka at Opa-locka Executive Airport Private Hangar 51 on Friday, November 15, 2013.  The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (OLCDC) hosted a wonderful evening dedicated to the historic past, present and bright future of the Opa-locka community. The 2nd annual fundraising event celebrated the revitalization plan to create visual, physical, and economically-sustainable design that involves and empowers residents, while converting the city into a true “Community of Choice.”

We got to see a special preview exhibit by renowned New York-based photographer Hunter Barnes (presenting portraits from his recent residency in Opa-locka), and an architectural installation by Germane Barnes. American hip-hop duo Black Violin performed an eclectic mix of Jazz, hip-hop, funk, and blue grass with Kev Marcus on his violin and Wil B on his viola, they were absolutely amazing.
