This September, Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In is setting up its big screen at a new venue, and one with plenty of outdoor intrigue. Situated in the Coconut Grove area, the drive-in’s “Blue Starlite By The Bay†welcomes movie fans to enjoy films on Bayshore Drive in between Miami’s striking Kennedy and Peacock Parks, and for the very first time on the weekends. Blue’s new home is the perfect place for patrons to relax and get their outdoor film fix on while breathing in fresh, waterfront air and reveling in the natural beauty of the surrounding parks.
“Blue Starlite By The Bay†is a collaboration made possible by The City of Miami Parks and Recreation with the help of the Commissioner of Miami, Marc Sarnoff. Blue’s new entertainment escape sits just a few blocks down from Scotty’s Landing and Monty’s Raw Bar and Restaurant—two of Miami’s most well known places for drinks and eats on the water. The car park at this location can host up to 30 vehicles a night, featuring a grassy area near the front of the screen for bikers and walk-in guests. Patrons who wish to secure their space early can do so and enjoy an outing in the park, time on the playground or a walk along the bay before settling into their cars for an evening of film screening fun.
Throughout the first month of fall, Blue Starlite will screen a mix of romance and adventure-packed family films—such as Princess Bride, The Goonies, Grease (the sing along), Alice In Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and Jaws. In the spirit of Blue Starlite’s cinematic experimentation, the Blue will offer alternative rock’n roll listening options for The Wizard of Oz and Alice In Wonderland with its popular late night Psychedelic Cinema Series. Film lovers can opt to enjoy Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon album with The Wizard of Oz or choose to listen to the The Wall soundtrack as they view Alice In Wonderland.

The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) is proud to announce LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING, a collaborative project between MCAD and EXILE Books, a Miami-based, pop-up artist’s book store. LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING is a groundbreaking program that seeks to bridge the understanding between downtown Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, specifically addressing visual impairments. Opening September 3, 2015, the exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.
LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING will transform ten Downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau via four main components:
The MCAD gallery will feature tactile relief works of selected downtown buildings with accompanying wall texts provided in braille.
The public, front steps of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) will house the project’s central component: an outdoor audio piece that will share engaging stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD’s home) as well as surrounding downtown buildings. The audio installation will be accompanied by a large, vinyl, floor applique inviting passersby to “LISTEN†to the building.
To further enhance the exhibit, students from FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Miami Beach Urban Studios will create models of selected downtown buildings using a 3-D printing process. These renderings will be displayed in covered boxes obscuring their visual properties so that audiences must feel the building to experience the architecture.
To commemorate the exhibition, EXILE Books will also produce an artist’s book in which the architectural narratives from the outdoor audio piece will be transcribed in braille. There will be no photographs or printed text in the publication, only tactile reliefs of each building, effectively compelling the viewer to experience Miami through new and distinct paradigms.
The exhibition is believed to be the first architectural exhibit designed to address accessibility for persons with visual impairments. MCAD and EXILE Books will co-host a slate of weekly events during the six-week exhibition to engage the public on issues of art, architecture, and accessibility. The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2015 to October 17, 2015.
The exhibition, mobility tours, and braille artist book are made possible with the support of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Support for EXILE Books is made possible through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Printing and consulting for the project generously provided by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Tactile illustrations offered by John De Salvo and Judith McBrien as featured in the Norton’s Pocket Guide to Miami Architecture. Programming partners include Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ability Explosion, Florida International University’s College for Architecture + the Arts, and IlluminArts. The Children’s Trust 2015 Family Expo, will host its ninth annual, FREE, all-day festival to provide parents with direct access to educational, health and social services in a fun and festive experience. As the largest free event of its kind in our community, the Expo boasts record crowds exceeding 20,000 and more than 200 participants. An assortment of exhibitors are located in two indoor exhibit halls showcasing information about education, after-school enrichment activities, low-cost health insurance, nutrition, safety, services for children with special needs, Pre-K registration and much more. As part of the fun, each hall will host two stages packed with entertainment and theatrical presentations of beloved children’s stories. Children can also enjoy rock climbing, elaborate bounce houses, face painting, balloon sculptures, stilt walkers, magicians and favorite storybook and television characters such as Nickelodeon’s Pablo and Uniqua, and Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat, among many others. Free backpacks and composition notebooks will be distributed to the first 1,000 school-age children.

◠Back-to-School Boulevard – Presented by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, more than 20 exhibit spaces pack the Boulevard featuring The Parent Academy, School Choice, Parent Portal and a host of other divisions.
◠Sugar Shocker & Jump to Health – Presented by Baptist Health, this new area teaches kids how to make better food choices and stay active. Includes jump roping demonstrations and participation, as well as free jump ropes.
◠Read to Learn Book Fair – Hosted by the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership and The Center for Writing and Literature at Miami-Dade College, this area features discounted children’s books and enrollment in The Read to Learn Book Club, as well as author appearances and book signings by Frank Camuso and George O’ Connor.
◠Science Treehouse – Presented by the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, this area features displays and fun, hands-on, educational STEM activities for all ages.
◠Arts & Crafts Area – Hosted by Abrakadoodle, painting, paper and clay modeling activities offer children a creative way to connect with classic fairytales and nursery rhymes.
◠Family Pet Area – Presented by The Humane Society of Greater Miami, counselors answer questions and assist with onsite pet adoptions plus activities and workshops for aspiring and current pet owners.
◠Chess Corner – All-day chess tournaments with prizes run by Stormont Kings.
◠Indoor Sports Fun Zone – A variety of athletic fun with an assortment of martial arts, tennis and fencing demonstrations.

About Romina:
Romina Musach is a performer, Instructor, choreographer and actress. Born in Argentina. She has been studying dance since she was a child. She worked part-time as a dance teacher while she studied her bachelors of choreographic composition at UNA University (Universidad Nacional del Arte). She also studied Theater Dance at “Fundacion Julio Boccaâ€.
Romina became a full-time dancer and teacher before she was 20 years old. She is the owner of her dance studio “Estudio de Danzas Romina Musach†in Argentina.
Romina studied oriental dance with different teachers. She did many shows in Argentina with different dance companies. Her most important teachers of Bellydance are: Amir Thaleb​, La Beduina Sarat and Virginia​. She also studies Flamenco Fusion with ZiZi Zabaneh​ and is one of Fusion Gitana’s principal dancers.

New Community Theater Opens in South Miami
Improv South Miami (ISM), a new theater located in South Miami that welcomes directors, actors, improvisers and local artists, will be hosting its grand opening on Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 8-10 p.m.
“We are so excited to be opening Improv South Miami, a non-profit organization focused on the local improv, arts and theater community. We want this theater space to be accessible for both established and up-and-coming theater and arts groups in South Florida,†said ISM founder Katrina Morris.
At ISM’s grand opening, house team Cage Free Humans, of which Morris is a member, will be headlining the entirely improvised comedy performance. Local improv teams Comedy School Dropouts and Miamah Comedy’s Battlecat will be opening for the show.
ISM was formed by Morris to provide low-cost rehearsal space and a free performance venue, with a percentage of funds raised going back to the performing artists. “The South Florida improv community is growing rapidly, with workshops and shows happening year-round. As the community grows, affordable rehearsal and performance space for independent teams are difficult to find,†she said.

Concert will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month and LatinSymphony Concert Series
at Miramar Cultural Center
The Miramar Cultural Center will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a tribute to Latin and Classical music presented by MAR Communications & Services, Inc. Famed pianist, Thomas Tirino will interpret the music of Ernesto Lecuona in “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy.†The event, part of the LatinSymphony concert series, will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015, 7 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center.
“We created the LatinSymphony series to offer a new appreciation of the richest and most influential Latin music,†says Maria Arreaza, President of MAR Communications & Services Inc. “By showcasing the fusion of Latin and Classical music, the next generation will be able to gain a greater understanding of our culture and heritage, and their contribution to the world of music.â€
Thomas Tirino is recognized worldwide for his skillful interpretation of the music of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. Tirino is the driving force behind the revival of many of Lecuona’s masterfully crafted compositions such as “Damisela Encantadora,†“MarÃa La O,†“Malagueña,†“Rapsodia Negra,†“Estás En Mi Corazón†and many more. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Tirino has performed concerts and given master-classes and lectures on Lecuona’s music all over the world, and has recorded several albums with the music of Lecuona.
Born in Guanabacoa, Cuba, Lecuona composed over six hundred pieces, mostly in the Cuban vein. His talent for composition influenced the Latin American world by raising Cuban music to classical status. At “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy,†audiences will be transported on a memorable musical journey filled with nostalgia for Cuba’s glory days.
There is no one more appropriate to serve as master of ceremony than Nestor Rodriguez. Born in a Cuba to a musical family, Rodriguez was president of Classical South Florida. He has spent his career dedicated to furthering the arts by devoting his time and resources to non-profit organizations such as the Miami City Ballet, Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chopin Foundation. As master of ceremony he will provide the audience with a special treat before the show conducting a special interactive Q&A with Tirino.

Dolphin Encounter is the program that allows guests to wade out into the pool and have a shallow water experience meeting the dolphins. Each day, 164 people lose their lives – many unnecessarily – due to improper care of pressure wounds also known as bedsores, a little-known area of medicine that is growing at an alarming rate with the rapid aging of our society.
Registered and licensed vocational nurses and those in related fields may earn continuing education credit and certification in the area of wound care by enrolling in weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care:

“The growing problem of pressure wounds is especially challenging for nursing homes that have had to send their residents to specialty clinics and hospitals for treatment,†said Anvar, who also founded the College of Long Term Care. “This is especially costly when you factor in ambulance transportation, lifting and moving patients in delicate health, admittance to the hospital and surgical care. Also, the simple act of transporting patients can lead to the onset of additional pressure wounds. By teaching staff how to prevent such wounds and identify them at the earliest stages, we can reverse these troubling statistics.â€
Weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care will reveal these basic facts about caring for wounds:
• Avoid excess baths (should only bathe for 3-5 minutes 2-3 times per week)
• Keep water temperature lukewarm – not hot
• Add bath oil
• Do not use most soap products as they contain detergent (Dove is the exception)
• Do not use washcloths
• Pat dry
• Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing and reapply 4 times each day
• Stay well hydrated
• Avoid caffeine, spices and alcohol

If you’ve ever wondered what Biscayne Boulevard looked like when it was brand new – or what the Miami Beach Kennel Club looked like before it was South Pointe Park, or what Lincoln Road looked like when cars drove on it, Sylvia Gurinsky has a show for you.
Gurinsky, a history consultant, tour guide and freelance writer, has dug through the files at the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College to find film and video clips that recapture vanished South Florida places and spaces.
The result: “Once There Was A Place…,†an informal tour through South Florida’s past presented by Gurinsky. The screening is open to the public and free of charge. Light refreshments will follow.
Among the sights recovered by Gurinsky’s research are the Brickell Mansion, home of William and Mary Brickell, captured in never-before-seen footage photographed shortly before the building was demolished.
Three Miami hotels that defined the Magic City’s boomtown skyline, the Columbus, Everglades and McAllister Hotels, are featured, as are the Diplomat Hotel, a MiMo classic designed by Norman Giller, and Morris Lapidus’ Fontainebleau, shown under construction on the beachfront site of Harvey Firestone’s mansion.
Sport facilities such as Miami’s beloved Orange Bowl and the Miami Beach Kennel Club, neighborhoods from Overtown to Sunny Isles and other sites are also covered in “Once There Was A Place…â€

Los Angeles with its tales of lost angels flocking from all over the world is heaven for some, purgatory or even hell for others. But what about Miami? What of its book? Time and time again the city has been glamorized by South Beach and its pretty colors. A city supposedly filled with flamingos and peacocks ignores the pigeons and mocking birds that truly call it home. Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees will give a voice to a group of native sons telling Miami’s story through their own work. The Motivational Edge is proud to present its annual Music & Art Student Showcase. The evening will include drinks courtesy of Premier Beverage, bites available for purchase through Empowered Youth’s Vibe 305 Food Truck, raffles and most importantly, a celebration of local talented youth. Enjoy several types of performances including dance, spoken word, singing and group instrumentals. Also on display and available for purchase will be an entire gallery of one of a kind art masterpieces created by our very talented students. These students will surely amaze you as they showcase how hard they’ve been working to perfect their skills.
Many of the presenting students come from the Irie Foundation Allapattah Music and Literacy Center through our Lyrical Expression and Audio Recording classes, which is available to them because of a generous grant from the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation.
