Join us for this free, scenic 12-mile roundtrip urban ride that will begin and end at Brickell Metrorail station. The route will pass pass through the Wynwood Art and Design districts and by Margaret Pace and Bayfront Parks. Ride will begin at noon and end at 2 PM.

Then, join us for the FREE ArtPlace UnderArt Opening Party from 2-5 PM where we will celebrate four public art installations along the future Underline by Miami-based artists Bhakti Baxter, Naomi Fisher, Nicolas Lobo, and Agustina Woodgate. UnderArt will feature:

• TalkArt: Interviews with each of the artists
• PlayArt: Paint plein-air postcards or street art
• KidArt: Creative play for kids of all ages

CULTRA brings a little more culture to downtown in the first-ever roving, outdoor open mic in Miami starting on Thursday, January 19, 2017.

A collaborative event series produced by Buskerfest Miami and Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces Downtown Miami has to offer. On the third-Thursday of each month, January to May 2017, CULTRA will be held in one of the Downtown Miami parks in an effort to put the “public” back in public spaces and foster connections between attendees and our precious bayfront.

The event begins with ninety minutes of open stage time followed by a feature performance by a well-known local group. Each edition of CULTRA will be a collaboration with one of Miami’s other prominent, long-running open mics and include a guest host. Artistic Vibes, who produces one of Miami’s longest-running weekly open mics, will host the inaugural CULTRA event on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park. Future dates of CULTRA are February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18.

CULTRA is made possible by a Public Space Challenge grant awarded by the Miami Foundation.

Tour begins with a brief introductory presentation at MCAD, itself located in the 1912 Old Post Office Building at the center of the City of Miami’s Historic District and covers a three-block area in the core of the Central Business District. Whether you are an architect or just love architecture, this tour is for you!

Tour departs from MCAD rain or shine. All tickets are $20 or $15 for seniors and students. Each adult ticket admits one child under the age of 8 for free. Advance reservations online are required. Tour begins promptly at 10:00 AM, however please arrive at 9:50 AM for check-in. All sales end at 6:00 PM the day prior to the tour. Brillhart Architecture is borne out of a love for and facility with “making” things. In the natural course of development, tectonics, materiality and the logic of construction have become a primary focus of interest. Relying on a back-to-basics approach, we often study old models for future buildings, marrying archetypes and prototypes with new materials, fabrication and construction assemblies – all the while placing heavy emphasis on process as a means of furthering creativity and invention. The goal is to create a contemporary and dynamic building vocabulary that resuscitates the Ancient, celebrates the Modern, and foresees an architecture without big style.

Though the firm works on a diverse range of projects – including commercial and residential architecture as well as exhibitions, interiors, furniture, and other speculative research projects – a pragmatic building vocabulary, emphasis on tectonic potential, and ideas of craftsmanship are the common threads that link each project together.

The office also embraces a very hands-on, “knowledge-how” ethos that extends beyond design. Engaged in low-budget competitions, installations, and personal endeavors (such as our house) early on, we grew our firm by conceiving, designing, fabricating, assembling and constructing many things ourselves. In simply having to figure things out, we have become highly resourceful: regularly collaborating with outside disciplines; learning to maximize structural and material efficiencies; and seeking creative solutions to details that may be outside the industry defaults.

As a result, the firm has won numerous awards for design innovation, including AIA awards in 2008 and 2010, and competition winnings. Work has been featured in the New York Times, Wallpaper, Metropolis, Design Bureau, and the Miami Herald. Custom furniture pieces have also been included in the annual design show, Inventory, held during Design Miami and Art Basel.

The firm was founded by Jacob Brillhart in 2005, after he completed his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University. Jacob complements his practice by teaching design, freehand drawing, and architectural theory as an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. A Gabriel Prize finalist in 2006 and 2007 and a finalist for the 2010 Rome Prize in Architecture, Brillhart has also served as the Favrot Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University.

The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), will launch a series of four Saturday night Encore WALLCAST™ concerts, presented by Citi on January 7 at the New World Center and SoundScape Park. Encore WALLCAST™ concerts will show previous WALLCAST™ concerts on the wall of the New World Center on evenings in which the New World Symphony does not have a live concert, for the first time allowing audiences to experience programs that they missed, relive favorite programs anew, and experience WALLCAST™ concerts alongside NWS Fellows in the park. Additionally, because the New World Center will not have audiences inside the hall during Encore WALLCAST™ concerts, the atrium of the New World Center will be open for Encore WALLCAST concert audiences to come inside, view the indoor architecture of Frank Gehry.

Dr. Agronin, an internationally recognized geriatric psychiatrist and author of numerous books, including “How We Age,” is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal’s “The Experts” column. In his books, Dr. Agronin addresses the scientific, medical and human side of aging through the stories and lives of his patients. He is widely recognized for his work in diagnosis, treatment and research on memory diseases for nearly 20 years at Miami Jewish Health. According to Dr. Agronin, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurocognitive disease, and such cases are expected to double worldwide within the next 50 years.

Lop-Off Sessions are a series of one-day, site-specific performances organized by Maitejosune Urrechaga & Tony Kapel of Pocket of Lollipops. The rock duo will present an all female line-up for the event, their first Lop-Off Session in Broward County.

The all female line up of local bands and musicians will record one song each on location at the Pink Noise: Flexing the Frequency exhibition in the galleries of Girls’ Club. These songs will then be made available as a compilation. Each band will have up to 30 minutes to knock out the song. The public is invited to watch on as an audience, respectful of the sound recordings taking place.

The objective of these Lop-Off Sessions is to show working musicians and the measures it takes capture a song.

Amid the backdrop of the exhibition Pink Noise: Flexing the Frequency, the audience is given a behind the scenes glimpse of the recording process – the set up, the tuning, the rehearsing, the capturing of a single musical work – a performance usually restricted to a trusted few.

“The audience will be watching what it takes for musicians to set-up, and capture a song. And also witness the stress, the anxiety or complete calm. Basically witnessing each musician’s approach to the task. So the acts are not really performing a show – just coming in and doing the track – some need the complete 30 minutes – some do 1st takes.”

These sessions are then made available to audiences for sale on location and at partnering locations in a limited edition vinyl album set, as a CD set and digitally through Houndstooth Cottage., a recording/publishing house, and host of semi-private music and art events.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Art Deco Weekend, Miami Beach’s annual community cultural festival, is the Miami Design Preservation League’s largest educational program of the year. The Miami Design Preservation League’s Art Deco Weekend returns to Ocean Drive for its 40th year welcoming over 150,000 locals and tourists to Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District to enjoy more than 85 events over three days.

Whether you channel the Great Gatsby era, are a history buff or a classic car enthusiast, or are just looking for fun things to do with your kids, the 40th annual Art Deco Weekend community cultural festival brings more art, more music and more family fun to Ocean Drive this year.

“The early architects in the Art Deco Historic District were some of the best architects in the world, and they all happened to come and create right here at one time,” explained Lori Bakkum, Chair of the Art Deco Weekend Committee and a Miami Design Preservation League Board of Directors Member. “They worked with the light and the breeze from the ocean and the native vegetation to create Tropical Deco. They used the elements natural to here. The reason it’s fun to sit at a café in Miami Beach is because of all these things. Art Deco Weekend celebrates the preservation of this unique architectural heritage by the Miami Design Preservation League.”

Preserving Our History
The impetus to preserve South Beach’s Art Deco architecture began in 1976 when Barbara Baer Capitman, John Capitman and Leonard Horowitz founded the Miami Design Preservation League. At the time, many of the buildings in the district were in disrepair and in danger of destruction. The preservation of Art Deco architecture in South Beach was key to the city’s resurgence in the 1980s and ’90s as a desirable resort destination once again.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering a monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

Little Havana Social Club Returns with Miami Debut of Septeto Santiaguero

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, re-ignites it’s starlit social dance series, the Little Havana Social Club, with the Miami debut of Septeto Santiaguero–direct from Cuba–at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14.

“What better way to bring back the series than with this historic band, indulging us with their rich musical tradition that has influenced so many in this community,” says Jessica Gloria, Manager of the Koubek Center. “Our goal is to make this series at the Koubek Center into a place of gathering for Latin music and dance enthusiasts. There is already a tremendous buzz in the neighborhood.”

The Latin Grammy- and Cubadisco- winning group Septeto Santiaguero developed their signature sound at the famous Casa de la Trova nightclub in Santiago de Cuba–the cradle of son and bolero. Their balance of tradition with experimentation has sparked collaborations with salsa stars like José Alberto “El Canario” and Rubén Blades. This show marks their Miami debut and their premiere U.S. tour.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts and dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables, each evening featuring vibrant live bands, pre-concert dance lessons, and community vendors. Situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion, the performances are preceded by a complimentary dance lesson, and followed by an afterparty with a DJ. Specialty food and cocktails are available for purchase.

Coming events in the series include an Argentine Valentine’s Milonga with Argot Tango Quintet on February 18; Puerto Rican bomba and plena by Plena Es on March 25; and Afro-Colombian Rhythms from Herencia de Timbiqui on April 22.

About Septeto Santiaguero
Septeto Santiaguero was founded in 1995, as a number of young musicians from other septets, such as Sones de Oriente or Septeto Luz, joined the famous Melodías de Ayer and Fernando Dewar, a tres player, took over the leadership. Seeking to return to their roots, they decided to give up the mambos and stick to the discipline of the traditional septet – guitar, tres, bongo, clave, maracas, acoustic bass and trumpet–with the addition of the drum, which they retained in honor of Arsenio Rodríguez. In the Santiago de Cuba style, the two singers maintain the first and second harmony with equal emphasis.

Despite the fact that the group is eight in number, they retained the name Septeto Santiaguero because of the way they perform the son, the bolero, the guaracha, the guajira, and the guaguancó, which are completely rooted in the septeto sound. Together they have a created a group which preserves and pays homage to one of Cuba’s most important musical forms, with a vitality demonstrating that the septeto tradition is still fresh and alive in Santiago de Cuba today.

Vocalist, guitarist, composer, arranger and band leader Luis Mario Ochoa was born in Havana, Cuba. Embracing Toronto as his new home in 1990, Luis Mario soon formed his band Cimarrón, recording three critically acclaimed CDs. His third CD, Cimarrón, includes an all-star cast of jazz and Latin musicians from Toronto as well as special guests Paquito D’Rivera and Guido Basso.

Luis Mario has been featured at most of Canada’s major jazz and world festivals, including Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax and Ottawa’s Chamberfest. International highlights include the Barbados Jazz Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in New York as a special guest of multi Grammy award winner Paquito D’ Rivera.

The annual New Year’s event at the Ritz Carlton South Beach returns with some “Cuban flair”.

The Ritz Carlton South Beach has long been recognized as on one of South Beach’s most stunning properties. This this holiday season, the glitz and glamour of old Havana will come alive for the hotel’s annual New Year’s Eve gala “Azucar!” Guests are invited to ring in 2017 in true Latin style, including an indulgent four-course dinner and poolside extravaganza in the heart of Miami’s famed Art Deco district.

Guests will be transported to an era of cabaret and haute-living known as the “Havana High Life.” The evening will kick off with a Latin-infused and sommelier wine-paired menu at Bistro One LR with dinner seating at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Starting at 9:00 p.m., the open bar will feature handcrafted libations, flutes of sparkling wine and signature rum Mojitos, shaken and stirred to order, with fresh tropical fruit, at the poolside Starr Barr lounge.

In the spirit of old Havana, Premium cigar maker Gurkha cigars, will provide premium, hand-cut and rolled cigars for guests to enjoy in the ultimate private lounge setting throughout the evening. A 10-piece Latin Orchestra band Mixtura will entertain guests, playing sultry rhythms under the stars, led by the famed Tony Succar. Following their performances, the New Year’s Eve countdown and champagne toast will be led by Miami nightlife entertainer DJ Malone at midnight.

South Florida JAZZ presents the renowned New York Standards Quartet on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 7:45 PM at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Four jazz master musicians formed the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) in 2006. The concept was a straightforward one: play jazz standards in a unique way. After performing a lot of original music they thought it would be liberating to play music based on conventional, standard jazz tunes that they had grown up playing. The band has been touring and developing together for more than ten years, and it definitely shows in the empathetic cohesion of the players. Audiences respond well to familiar music that is fresh sounding, accessible, and hard-swinging.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami welcomes back the Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Miami Big Sound Orchestra features vocal artist Lourdes Valentin, bassist/composer Rafael Valencia, pianist Jim Gasior, tenor saxophonist Tom McCormick and an incredible 18-piece band. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul.

The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with some top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Neives, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among many others. The public is invited to come wrap up 2016 and enjoy the music, funk and soul of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra.

Two Miami icons team up to take you on a culinary world-tour on New Year’s Eve.

Pitbull embodies the Miami vibe: hip, cool and the ultimate entertainer. There is no one better to host a New Year’s Eve party than Mr. Worldwide himself. And when he thought to turn this party into a culinary affair, he only needed to look at the top of Miami’s Who’s Who. At the top of that list is none other than James Beard Award-winning chef, Michelle Bernstein.

The party will take place smack in the middle of all the celebration at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. But this isn’t a party for the masses. This private event is a limited ticket event. There will be 15 to 20 food stations. Each station will have a signature dish created by Chef Bernstein. The spirit of this event is truly a “worldwide” experience. Each dish will focus on a different region of the world. In addition to the culinary delights, there are several signature cocktails to enjoy plus perfectly paired wine and craft beer. These signature cocktails are masterfully created by award-winning mixologist Julio Cabrera. It’s almost time to ring in the New Year and Our Passion at the Trio is ready to celebrate! Chef Lobeck has created a four-course meal for all his guests to enjoy at $50 per person, which also includes a glass of wine or a glass of champagne. To start, guests have a choice of a grouper ceviche or a beef Carpaccio followed by a mixed green salad with shredded carrots, candied walnuts with balsamic vinaigrette. The National Hotel, Collins Avenue’s elegant and cinematic Art Deco hotel, is hosting a Joy/Toy Drive, on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 benefiting The Children’s Home Society of Florida. Guests will have the option of donating an unwrapped toy or purchasing the gift of Joy on location. Gift of Joy donations are used to purchase tickets for South Florida families to experience local, family-friendly attractions such as the Miami Children’s Museum, Zoo Miami and Parrot Jungle among others.
Each donation will provide guests with a complimentary drink at the hotel’s Blues Bar and live entertainment by the talented team at LIVE! at the National.
Participation is encouraged but necessary. Guests can drop off their donated toy(s) at valet or enter to submit their donation toward the purchase of a Joy.
The Toy/Joy drive provides for families and underprivileged children in South Florida during the holidays. This year, applications for assistance have far exceeded the amount of resources available. The National Hotel hopes to change that by way of this Joy / Toy drive.

On Monday, December 12th, LILT Lounge, the Downtown Miami cocktail oasis, will bring a taste of Grand Cayman to the Magic City. The sultry cocktail lounge will host the exciting Taste of Cayman International Mixology Competition featuring six of South Florida’s top mixologists, all mixing for a chance to compete in the prestigious 2017 Taste of Cayman Food & Drink Festival in January.

From 6PM to 8PM, participating mixologists will shake up their best creations featuring Grand Cayman’s Seven Fathoms Premium Rum. Participating mixologists will include LILT ‘s own Lead Bartender Spencer Taliaferro, Area 31’s Benny Hernandez, Beaker & Gray’s Gabriel Benavides and Nicholas Mantzaridis, Brandon’s Palm Beach’s Lead Bartender Paul Ivan Ramirez, and Menin Hospitality Group’s Lead Bartender Joshua Gonzalez. Star judges will include hospitality industry VIPS ChatChow TV’s Gio Gutierrez, star mixologist David Ortiz, City of Miami’s Luxury Hotels Division Manager Aldo Jaquez and Cayman Spirits Distiller Moises Sevilla. The evening will also feature specially-priced Seven Fathoms cocktails, with sales proceeds to benefit PARK Project. MDPL’ s volunteer Fashion Show Director and vintage enthusiast, Angela La Muse, has curated a show inspired by the 1920’s to 30’s with a touch of mid century , sure to excite! Retro-inspired fashions from local designers will be presented on the runway. One talented designer will be awarded $500 and a booth at ADW 2018. A special exhibit at the Art Deco Welcome Centre, following the festival, will display these fantastic fashions.

The models, who are delegates of the Miss Art Deco pageant, will strut their stuff on runway. Their hair and make-up will be provided by the students from the Beauty School of America in vintage inspired looks. Think pin curls and red lipstick! Be sure to come early and save your spot. This has become one of the most popular events at Art Deco Weekend!

Feeding South Florida®, the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in the South Florida region, will host its 7th Annual Outrun Hunger 5K presented by JM Family Enterprises, Inc. The event, which will raise funds to help end hunger in South Florida and raise awareness for the issue of food insecurity, will begin at Huizenga Plaza.
