The original and groundbreaking Flamenco work, Verano y Humo, by Ballet Flamenco La Rosa’s Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, is an international collaboration with stellar guest artists from Spain. Inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, this is a not to be missed experience, as a great American play is interpreted in the language of Flamenco. With two vivid main characters that are polar opposites, the stage is set for drama. The principal themes of intense love and desire along with resulting loneliness and despair, make this work a challenge yet a perfect fit for Flamenco’s compelling arsenal of physical and emotional expression. There is ample opportunity for Flamenco’s passion and force as well as the nuance and delicacy that it embodies at the same time. The event, coordinated by Blanca Commercial Real Estate Vice Chairman Danet Linares and Habitat Miami’s Women’s Leadership Council, raises money for the organization’s efforts to build affordable housing for low-income Miami-Dade families and recruit a new demographic and generation of volunteers. Last year, more than $100,000 was raised. All proceeds will help underwrite the cost to build a home for a single mother through a new initiative named “Women Building Up Women.”

Saturday May 19 at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre: Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When the world-class Mexican Ballet Compañia de Danza Clásica Quintana Roo travels to Florida to share the stage with the region’s leading contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, both meanings of the word will be invoked. On Saturday, May 19, at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre, the Mexican dancers will present the world premiere of their Puentes NO Muros, paired on the same program with an updating of the Miami company’s Bridges NOT Walls. The Bridges/Puentes project is a two-year collaboration between the companies, an effort to address directly issues of immigration, fear and overcoming isolation. After performing the works in their initial stages in 2017 in Mexico in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, and at the Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, the two companies now bring the finished pieces to the United States for this special joint performance.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Sunday May 6 from 4-7 PM: Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month, Global Arts Project, Inc. and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present Leon Foster Thomas, who has elevated the steel pan to a formidable jazz instrument. His quintet will be joined by international legend Mino Cinélu in a FREE concert in beautiful Collins Park, 2100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach (behind the Bass Museum.)

Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. The New York Amsterdam News has described his playing as “riveting, his artistry as unrivaled and his stage personality as dominant.” His virtuosic playing of the Steel Pan has enabled him to connect emotionally with the listener on every level. Foster was World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet Champion of 2002 and 2004.

Special Guest Mino Cinélu is a legend. Sit with master-of-all-trades Mino Cinélu in any café and more likely than not, a record will come on that he’s played on, including Sting, Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and countless others. Whether playing percussion, drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, or singing, Mino brings his signature infectious personality full of warmth and joie de vivre, coupled with decades of intense study in a wide variety of styles from around the world.

As part of Global Arts’ Educational Outreach program, the concert will open with a set by Dr Ed Calle’s student jazz ensemble. This will be followed by a 90-minute set by our featured performers.

As a special treat, dancers of the TLL Dance Ensemble, under the direction of Weiselande ‘Yanui’ César, will perform. TLL has opened concerts for many artists, including Wyclef Jean, Tabou Combo, and RAM.

May 4 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Leon Foster Thomas Quintet, with special guest Mino Cinelu, in celebration of Caribbean Heritage Month. Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. The New York Amsterdam News has described his playing as “riveting, his artistry as unrivaled and his stage personality as dominant.” His virtuosic playing of the Steel Pan has enabled him to connect emotionally with the listener on every level. Foster was World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet Champion of 2002 and 2004.

Special Guest Mino Cinélu is a legend. Sit with master-of-all-trades Mino Cinélu in any café and more likely than not, a record will come on that he’s played on, including Sting, Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and countless others. Starting by the mouth of the Miami River, where this area began thousands of years ago, our group will explore the roots of Cuban migration at Jose Marti Park, once known as “Tent City.” Stops along the way include a cluster of designated historical sites such as the Miami River Inn and the Miami Hispanic Cultural Center, also known as the J.W. Warner House, a landmark built in 1906. Discover these sites and learn more about the Miami River Greenway, a waterfront linear park, becoming the next multicultural public space connecting Miamians!

Friends of The Underline Ride to Little Havana

Another neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by The Underline’s Cycling Club, powered by Baptist Health South Florida. The Underline is transforming land below Miami’s Metrorail system into a 10-mile, world-class, linear park and living art destination directly connected to transit. Their tour will explore connections to future and existing destinations in our beautiful city, while showing how biking is a fun, safe, and healthy way to get around! Starting at the Douglas Road Metro, this family-friendly bicycle ride travels to Little Havana for some snacks & refreshments. Stops along the way include opportunities to learn about transit-oriented development, and how local residents are living healthier & more mobile lifestyles. This ride is open to all bicyclists 12+ years, plus requires a helmet and waiver to participate.

DowntownMiami’s History of Development

Our neighborhood exploration of Downtown Miami will be led by Shaan Patel, a trained Architect who’s working as a developer, and is passionate about city planning. He’s also the creator and writer of Miami Grid, a local blog about Miami Urbanism. This walking tour will consider what the boundaries or arteries of Downtown Miami are, while delving into the area’s history of development. When looking at the western part of Downtown today, most do not know the history or changes that this segmented community has undergone. While learning about the Miami River, Flagler’s Railroad, and the introduction of I-95, this walking group will weave through a changing place to better understand why it is the way it is, and where it’s going. Stops along the way include: Historic Lyric Theater, Miami Central, and and Lummus Park. The tour will also end with free entry to HistoryMiami Museum’s “Street Traditions” exhibit!

Join us in welcoming Bernardinho, Brazil’s setter for the Brazilian National Volleyball team in the 80’s.
Bernardinho’s career spanned from 1979 to 1986, with significant wins such as the bronze medal in the World Cup in 1981, and the silver in the World Games in Argentina in 1982 and the silver at the Olympic Games in 1984.
Bernardinho coached the women’s Brazilian National team, who were vice-champions in 1994, that same year they also won the Grand Prix, bronze medal at the Olympics in 1996, and the bronze medal in the Sidney.
For the men’s team, besides the nine titles of the World League, he was the coach for the Champions of the World Cup in 2003, of the Olympic games in 2004 and the World Championships in 2006.
On 21 August of 2016 he was the Coach for Brasil’s male volleyball team which won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in a 3 to 0 victory over Italy at the Maracanãzinho stadium.
Bernardinho has one of the most complete resumes of any Brazilian athlete, and now is a motivational speaker. Bernardinho is married to the former volleyball player, Fernanda Venturini, they have two daughters and one son.

Our neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by Corinna Moebius, a local resident and co-author of the book, “A History of Little Havana.” She’s been leading tours of Little Havana since 2006, when she served as director of the monthly Viernes Culturales festival, and is currently a PhD Candidate in cultural anthropology at FIU, where her research focuses on racial politics of the community’s memorial landscape. This walking tour is not an ordinary experience of Little Havana. There will be highlights of the popular “arts district” or “heritage district” on Calle Ocho, but you’ll learn how to “see” the district as a stage. How does it function as a stage? What stories are told here, and why? Where and what are the silences? Attendees are encouraged to think critically about the role of “heritage districts” and “heritage tourism” in reproducing myths about race/ethnicity and racial/ethnic difference. Stops along the way include: Cuban Memorial Park, murals, Domino and Azucar Plazas, and some sites outside the tourist district as well. Accessibility: #MiamiWalks seeks to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs. This walking tour in particular, will be kid-friendly and dog-friendly.

Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, closes its 2017-18 season with a gala event: Layali al-Andalus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Olympia Theater, featuring the National Arab Orchestra and special guests.

The Ojalá/ Inshallah season was named for the Spanish word for “I wish” and the Arabic phrase for “God willing” as a reminder of the Moorish impact on the Spanish language and Hispanic identity shared by so many greater Miami residents. This final performance, Layali al-Andalus, or “Andalusian Nights,” embodies the Arab-Hispanic connection, conjuring the oft romanticized historical place and time of cultural co-existence and exchange in an enchanting evening of Arab Classical music, flamenco and more.
Dedicated to performing and preserving the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music, the 24-member National Arab Orchestra features violins and cellos alongside traditional instruments such as oud, qanun (zither), nay (reed flute) and a percussion section including riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble will be joined by esteemed Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez, and Flamenco singer Alejandro El Gambimbas (direct from Spain!); Arabic singers Marian Layousse, Abdallah Moussa, and Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

A pre-concert reception will celebrate the season, offering complimentary Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for all concert goers.

Of Puerto Rican and Jamaican descent, Stephaine Michaels weaves her multicultural background into her talents as an entertainer. Her scope covers vintage rhythm and blues, classic rock, contemporary pop, rap and hip-hop. After joining The Fusion Band she began to perform at various places throughout South Florida. Gulfstream Park invites ice cream lovers to celebrate Free Cone Day on Tuesday, May 8 at Häagen-Dazs. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the ice cream shop will offer all guests a free cone with the ice cream flavor of their choice. In addition, Gulfstream Park will be hosting an afternoon of free entertainment at Champions Plaza featuring an interactive DJ, face painting, sing-alongs, and appearances by characters from Frozen. There will be Olaf Meet and Greets starting at 4:30 p.m., which will be followed by a character show at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Last year, Häagen-Dazs at Gulfstream Park served over 5,700 scoops and was the number one store in the country to participate in Free Cone Day. This year, the Gulfstream Park shop hopes to surpass that number by inviting customers to welcome summer with a sweet and refreshing treat.

Guests will enjoy a four-course dinner prepared by Council Oak’s culinary team paired with a Pappy Van Winkle flight featuring one-ounce pours of 12-year, 15-year, 20-year, and 23-year reserves. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) continues its hands-on interactive art classes “Creative Arts 4 Kids,” on the first Saturday of every month. These classes are open to children ages 6 through 12. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join the class and participate with the students.

“Creative Arts 4 Kids” runs simultaneously with the school year from October through May. Each month, classes have a different theme focusing on the work of a contemporary artist and will introduce students to art processes through drawing, painting, and sculpture.

The May class, “Pale Pastel Pots,” will feature the work of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. Participants will create still life paintings of pottery arrangements in a pastel color palette.

Cost per child:
• $18 per class, $60 for a four-class series for the general public.
• $12 per class, $40 for a four-class series for MOCA members, NOMI residents and City employees.
• There is a $2 discount for each additional child in the household.
• Class fee includes all materials.

The concert features singer/songwriter Leesa Richards, a storyteller, a soulful voice offering a soundtrack to the narratives of life. Her sound taps into the deep roots of R&B, the poetry of jazz and folk and the energy of rock. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. The brainchild of art entrepreneur Michael Rosen, Buzz Art Auction is a traveling, live, NO RESERVE auction featuring original works from the nation’s top street artists alongside hors d’oeuvres, expert mixology and entertainment. Guests will also have the chance to enjoy cocktails and specialty tastings by Nobu Hotel.

From aspiring collectors to connoisseurs, Buzz Art Auction offers guests of all levels an opportunity to bid on art in a fun and exciting atmosphere that other auctions do not possess. Previous events have featured the works of acclaimed artists including Kenny Scarf, Crash, Gregory Siff and Banksy. The event features unbelievable partners such as Jetsmarter, FlexWheels and Tequila Avion.

A percentage of proceeds from the Miami event will go to New World Symphony, consistent with Buzz Art’s mission to give back with each event. New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles.
