The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will present the group exhibition “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly” from May 24 – Aug. 5, 2018. Curated by Risa Puleo, the exhibition features the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas separated into conceptual categories including indigenous, immigrant and assimilated.   
 
The exhibition focuses on the monarch, the only butterfly that migrates in two directions, as a geographic range and a metaphor. Monarchs (specifically those of eastern North American) fly from southern Canada through the Midwest on their way to Michoacán, Mexico and back. 
 
This survey of artists from or living in the path of the monarch, brings to life the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call to build a wall in Mexico as unrelenting issues that create challenges for people native to the Americas — being separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated. 
 
Like the butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely navigate its way through middle America with inherited knowledge, these artists also use inherited cultural memory to showcase and explore historical narratives of their respective heritage through abstract techniques. 
 
Artists incorporate processes such as basket weaving, beadwork, copper hammering, and quilting, and materials such as stucco, plaster, ceramics, and feathers, that hold a high degree of resonance within native, immigrant, and brown aesthetics and vernacular cultures. The exhibition also charts the movement of styles and approaches through large spans of time across the Americas, speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form. 
 
William Cordova, a nationally respected Miami-based artist, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is hosting a group exhibition of artists from ProjectArt, a nonprofit organization that provides free after-school art classes to underserved youth in public libraries through an artist residency program.

Taking inspiration from the libraries and communities they served for 9 months, these Miami-based, multi-disciplinary artists will come together to showcase the artwork they created during their tenure as ProjectArt Resident Artists. The artists teach, mentor youth, and create new works in eight public libraries across Miami-Dade County.

MOCA and ProjectArt will kick off the 4-day viewing with an opening event on Thursday, May 31 at 6:00 p.m. that includes a 7:15 p.m. walk-through led by the artists who will offer exclusive insight into their works.

The exhibition will feature works by Alex Nuñez (Hispanic Branch Library), Anthony Anaya (North Central Branch Library), Blair Butterfield (Homestead Branch Library), Maria Theresa Barbist (Culmer/Overtown Branch Library), Morel Doucet (Arcola Lakes Branch Library), Rosa Naday Garmendia (Little River Branch Library), Rosemarie Romero (Model City Branch Library) and Stuart Sheldon (Edison Branch Library).

The exhibition is on view from May 31 – June 3, 2018

Eight Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, students of H.H. Dalai Lama, will visit the Coral Springs Museum of Art to share their teachings and artistic expression with the community.
The monks will devote each day to constructing the renowned sand mandala. Millions of colored grains of sand will be carefully laid out in detailed patterns and diagrams, which represent sacred textual Buddhist imagery.
Highlights of the week will include a Tibetan lunch prepared by the monks, authentic Tibetan artistic workshops, a Celebration of Community with interfaith dialogue, a catered farewell dinner with the monks, and a Cultural Pageant Spectacular with costume, ritual dance, song and chants.

On August 15th, make your way to the opulent Faena Theater to witness prodigious jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker in concert as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series.

At just 17 years old, this gifted musician has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder. In addition to his on-stage acts, Whitaker has charmed millions through televised performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and FOX’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” on which he won first place.

A New Jersey native, Matthew Whitaker was born three months premature and later diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, which caused his blindness. With perfect pitch, he learned to play piano through listening and later became versed in Braille music during his musical education at The Harlem School of the Arts and Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz program. Saturday May 19 at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre: Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When the world-class Mexican Ballet Compañia de Danza Clásica Quintana Roo travels to Florida to share the stage with the region’s leading contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, both meanings of the word will be invoked. On Saturday, May 19, at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre, the Mexican dancers will present the world premiere of their Puentes NO Muros, paired on the same program with an updating of the Miami company’s Bridges NOT Walls. The Bridges/Puentes project is a two-year collaboration between the companies, an effort to address directly issues of immigration, fear and overcoming isolation. After performing the works in their initial stages in 2017 in Mexico in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, and at the Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, the two companies now bring the finished pieces to the United States for this special joint performance.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

On Saturday, May 12, Galleria Lofts will be hosting a fundraiser for Feeling Fine Canine and Equine Rescue. Over the past six years, Glam-A-THON has donated more than $500,000 to help fund free mammograms, diagnostic testing, and other needs associated with breast cancer treatment. Focused on helping breast cancer patients in South Florida, the nonprofit organization has now partnered with Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach to raise funds in “Glam” fashion.

Sunday May 6 from 4-7 PM: Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month, Global Arts Project, Inc. and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present Leon Foster Thomas, who has elevated the steel pan to a formidable jazz instrument. His quintet will be joined by international legend Mino Cinélu in a FREE concert in beautiful Collins Park, 2100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach (behind the Bass Museum.)

Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. The New York Amsterdam News has described his playing as “riveting, his artistry as unrivaled and his stage personality as dominant.” His virtuosic playing of the Steel Pan has enabled him to connect emotionally with the listener on every level. Foster was World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet Champion of 2002 and 2004.

Special Guest Mino Cinélu is a legend. Sit with master-of-all-trades Mino Cinélu in any café and more likely than not, a record will come on that he’s played on, including Sting, Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and countless others. Whether playing percussion, drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, or singing, Mino brings his signature infectious personality full of warmth and joie de vivre, coupled with decades of intense study in a wide variety of styles from around the world.

As part of Global Arts’ Educational Outreach program, the concert will open with a set by Dr Ed Calle’s student jazz ensemble. This will be followed by a 90-minute set by our featured performers.

This walking tour will consider what the boundaries or arteries of Downtown Miami are, while delving into the area’s history of development. When looking at the western part of Downtown today, most do not know the history or changes that this segmented community has undergone. While learning about the Miami River, Flagler’s Railroad, and the introduction of I-95, this walking group will weave through a changing place to better understand why it is the way it is, and where it’s going. Stops along the way include: Historic Lyric Theater, Miami Central, and and Lummus Park. The tour will also end with free entry to HistoryMiami Museum’s “Street Traditions” exhibit!

Friends of The Underline Ride to Little Havana

Another neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by The Underline’s Cycling Club, powered by Baptist Health South Florida. The Underline is transforming land below Miami’s Metrorail system into a 10-mile, world-class, linear park and living art destination directly connected to transit. Their tour will explore connections to future and existing destinations in our beautiful city, while showing how biking is a fun, safe, and healthy way to get around! Starting at the Douglas Road Metro, this family-friendly bicycle ride travels to Little Havana for some snacks & refreshments. Stops along the way include opportunities to learn about transit-oriented development, and how local residents are living healthier & more mobile lifestyles. This ride is open to all bicyclists 12+ years, plus requires a helmet and waiver to participate.

Join us in welcoming Bernardinho, Brazil’s setter for the Brazilian National Volleyball team in the 80’s.
Bernardinho’s career spanned from 1979 to 1986, with significant wins such as the bronze medal in the World Cup in 1981, and the silver in the World Games in Argentina in 1982 and the silver at the Olympic Games in 1984.
Bernardinho coached the women’s Brazilian National team, who were vice-champions in 1994, that same year they also won the Grand Prix, bronze medal at the Olympics in 1996, and the bronze medal in the Sidney.
For the men’s team, besides the nine titles of the World League, he was the coach for the Champions of the World Cup in 2003, of the Olympic games in 2004 and the World Championships in 2006.
On 21 August of 2016 he was the Coach for Brasil’s male volleyball team which won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in a 3 to 0 victory over Italy at the Maracanãzinho stadium.
Bernardinho has one of the most complete resumes of any Brazilian athlete, and now is a motivational speaker. Bernardinho is married to the former volleyball player, Fernanda Venturini, they have two daughters and one son.

Our neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by Corinna Moebius, a local resident and co-author of the book, “A History of Little Havana.” She’s been leading tours of Little Havana since 2006, when she served as director of the monthly Viernes Culturales festival, and is currently a PhD Candidate in cultural anthropology at FIU, where her research focuses on racial politics of the community’s memorial landscape. This walking tour is not an ordinary experience of Little Havana. There will be highlights of the popular “arts district” or “heritage district” on Calle Ocho, but you’ll learn how to “see” the district as a stage. How does it function as a stage? What stories are told here, and why? Where and what are the silences? Attendees are encouraged to think critically about the role of “heritage districts” and “heritage tourism” in reproducing myths about race/ethnicity and racial/ethnic difference. Stops along the way include: Cuban Memorial Park, murals, Domino and Azucar Plazas, and some sites outside the tourist district as well. Accessibility: #MiamiWalks seeks to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs. This walking tour in particular, will be kid-friendly and dog-friendly.

Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, closes its 2017-18 season with a gala event: Layali al-Andalus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Olympia Theater, featuring the National Arab Orchestra and special guests.

The Ojalá/ Inshallah season was named for the Spanish word for “I wish” and the Arabic phrase for “God willing” as a reminder of the Moorish impact on the Spanish language and Hispanic identity shared by so many greater Miami residents. This final performance, Layali al-Andalus, or “Andalusian Nights,” embodies the Arab-Hispanic connection, conjuring the oft romanticized historical place and time of cultural co-existence and exchange in an enchanting evening of Arab Classical music, flamenco and more.
Dedicated to performing and preserving the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music, the 24-member National Arab Orchestra features violins and cellos alongside traditional instruments such as oud, qanun (zither), nay (reed flute) and a percussion section including riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble will be joined by esteemed Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez, and Flamenco singer Alejandro El Gambimbas (direct from Spain!); Arabic singers Marian Layousse, Abdallah Moussa, and Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

A pre-concert reception will celebrate the season, offering complimentary Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for all concert goers.

The performance will be at the Euclid Circle stage, Lincoln Rd and Euclid Ave, Miami Beach. Of Puerto Rican and Jamaican descent, Stephaine Michaels weaves her multicultural background into her talents as an entertainer. Her scope covers vintage rhythm and blues, classic rock, contemporary pop, rap and hip-hop. After joining The Fusion Band she began to perform at various places throughout South Florida. Performances at The Fling Lounge at the Isles Casino, Mardi Gras Casino, The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Seminole Classic Casino and Gulfstream Casino increased the entertainer’s loyal fan base. After working with the band for three and a half years, Michaels was offered an opportunity to work with legendary musicians as the lead vocalist in B.B. King’s Allstar Band. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) continues its hands-on interactive art classes “Creative Arts 4 Kids,” on the first Saturday of every month. These classes are open to children ages 6 through 12. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join the class and participate with the students.

“Creative Arts 4 Kids” runs simultaneously with the school year from October through May. Each month, classes have a different theme focusing on the work of a contemporary artist and will introduce students to art processes through drawing, painting, and sculpture.
 
The May class, “Pale Pastel Pots,” will feature the work of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. Participants will create still life paintings of pottery arrangements in a pastel color palette. 

Cost per child:
• $18 per class, $60 for a four-class series for the general public.
• $12 per class, $40 for a four-class series for MOCA members, NOMI residents and City employees.
• There is a $2 discount for each additional child in the household.
• Class fee includes all materials.

The concert features singer/songwriter Leesa Richards, a storyteller, a soulful voice offering a soundtrack to the narratives of life. Her sound taps into the deep roots of R&B, the poetry of jazz and folk and the energy of rock. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. In celebration of Mother’s Day, Micro Mini Musers(ages 3-5) and their families will create a project inspired by a stained glass artwork by Constance Stella, the mother of legendary artist Frank Stella. Constance Stella’s piece, Stained Glass Study, Ipswich, 2006, is currently included in the Museum’s exhibition, Frank Stella: Experiment and Change.

Friday, April 27 at 8: Arts Garage presents The Mojo Ike and Val Experience. Grammy-nominated artists Ike and Val Woods have performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. The Miami-based blues duo completed their most recent CD, “Movin’ Up,” after returning from an eighteen-city European Tour where they electrified their audience with their high energy yet soulful Blues performances. The Ike and Val Woods Blues Band competed and won first place at the Monterey Blues Festivals’ “Battle of the Bands”. They have shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Gill Scott, Ramsey Lewis, KEM, Jerry Butler, Jeffrey Osborne, Bobby Blue Bland, the Whispers, Tommy Castro, Eddie Cotton Jr., Jonathan Butler, David Sanborne, Earl Klugh, Betty Wright, Nestor Torres, the Ruppingtons, Pancho Sanchez and the O’Jays. They will make their debut at Arts Garage on April 27th playing a danceable mix of Blues, R&B, Soul and Jazz.

Miami, FL — The 2nd Annual Miami Jets is scheduled for August 22nd-23rd, 2018, at the AMPs Aero Club in the South Florida Area.
The remote control jet show features many pilots, an aerobatic jet show. Planes at this event include F-15, F-16, F-18 Super Hornet, BAE Hawk, and many planes to see, as well come see the 14-foot-long F-104 Star Fighter.
Sport Jet aerobatic show including high speed passes and 9G with the jets flying from 100-200mph, scales vary from 1/8 to 1/3 Scale, amazing replicas of the real Jet Fighters and all day fun of flying jets.
Food and drinks will be offered at the event a $5 Donation will be per car to help the club for future maintenance , Miami Jets flying starts from 9am till 7pm Saturday August 22 and Sunday August 23rd.
