IDEAS art exhibition 7/8/11

IDEAS art exhibition
July 8th, 7:00
Miami Dade College West Campus
3800 Northwest 115th Avenue
Doral, FL 33178
www.dianaalbadan.com

Diana Albadan proposes IDEAS, her first individual exhibition in Miami, composed of 13 works that evoke free figuration. The name for this work has a very interesting origin. It came from the classical theory of the philosophical teachings of Plato which has been addressed by thinkers and artists of different disciplines such as the Portuguese author José Saramago. Although the artist does not intend to defend the stream that accepts the existence of a parallel world in which thoughts are the protagonists and relate under certain underlying rules to their environment; she definitely wants make an invitation to observe the role of these ideas and thoughts on decisions made by individuals. In other words, is an invitation to remember that not in vain famous thinkers have given importance to the ideas and the way these affect us, change us, corrupt us or reinvent us.

First One Night Stand Exhibition Series War by Children by student PJ Lazo 6/11/11

First “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”: War by Children by student PJ Lazo
The Lunch Box Gallery
June 11, 2011, from 5-10pm
310 NW 24th St, Miami, Fl 33127
www.thelunchboxgallery.com

The exhibition “War by Children” by Miami International University of Art & Design student PJ Lazo inaugurates the first show of the “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”, a new project from The Lunch Box Gallery (Miami, FL) which aims to give photography students the opportunity to participate in the popular Wynwood Gallery Walks, facilitating them the exposure of their work during this major art event.

Understanding how difficult can be sometimes for current students to showcase their photography in galleries or in any other art institutions besides their undergraduate or graduate schools, “One Night Stand” emerges from the idea of encouraging and enabling the students in Florida that “first step” into the Miami art scene.

After a call for entries and a final selection, a student is chosen every month to exhibit his/her photographs in the exterior wall of The Lunch Box Gallery for the day of the Wynwood Art Walk (second Saturday of every month). This occasion is intended to give the student access to meeting new people, gaining experience in the process of exhibiting and bringing to the eye of the public new talents worth seeing in the realm of contemporary photography. The exhibition series is also oriented to help students by the gallery not retaining any commissions in the event of a sale.

P.J. Lazo is a 25 years old photography student from the Miami International University of Art & Design, born in Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida. He was one of the first students to apply to the first “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”, submitting a fascinating work named War by Children. For Lazo, almost everything becomes a game through the eyes of a child. Children experience the world with an untethered perception. An imagination without budget or the shackles of social restrictions, therefore transforming any conventional concept into an infinite play land where anything is possible. These can be controversial subjects like “war” for example: man slaying man in a perpetual struggle; one of our species greatest downfalls and certainly not a topic for games. However, according to the student, a child interprets this concept with an empty mind, oblivious to the horror of reality. To him, it is just a concept; a setting in which to play in. War by Children is Lazo’s subjective interpretation of what that play world would look like.

To apply for upcoming “One Night Stand” exhibitions, students are required to send their photographs, CVs and artist statements to submission@thelunchboxgallery.com.

Coconut Grove Gallery Night by Betty Alvarez

I have always loved Coconut Grove Gallery night and it has been a while since I have been to a gallery night in this section of the city. Therefore, I ventured out to what it was going to be a worthwhile experience. My first stop was at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Galleries 1 & 2. Gallery one featured the exhibition “Master Thesis exhibition–Visual Art Graduates of 2011” in partnership with Ai Miami International University. Gallery 2 featured “Art-I-tecture” Artist Hans Petersen, presented vibrant, large scale images of aspects of architecture and environments translated into abstract paintings.

Next, I went to the Mayfair Promenade which many artists and vendors were selling various artworks from jewelry, art pieces etc. One distinct event that I have not seen in past Coconut Grove Gallery night before was when thirteen visual artists and a violinist came together to have an improvisational orchestra. This was presented by Brigitte Kishlar of the MCA Academy & Trina Collins of Out of Africa. Guests saw music played in response to the painters–paintings were created to the whimsical rhythms of the moment. Near the improvisational orchestra, I wandered into Artway 66 where its “Art is Everywhere III” exhibition took place. Afterwards, I visited AC Restrospective Gallery where large scale screenprints were on displayed. One artwork that I really liked was Erica King’s autographed photography of Basketball players of all time.

In Cocowalk, Rodezart.com Gallery displayed David Acevedo’s exhibition entitled “What Matters Most” David constantly experiments with multiple subjects and media. It really shows in his great masterpieces. We wanted to take advantage of “Gallery Walk” cocktails in three great restaurant. The Peacock Garden Cafe was the first stop and what a surprise that I had. I was served a good portion glass of Sangria saying the secret password “Gallery Night” to the bartender. Delicious! The restaurant itself reminded me of the old Coconut Grove. How it really was. This quaint restaurant had some nice pieces of furniture. It was a very delightful atmosphere.

Max in the Grove, a multi artist gallery featured artists such as Steve Kauffman, Peter Max and Salvadore Dali. Bringing fine art to the world. I ventured to Commodore Plaza where Frameworks featured local artist Marcelo Holzinger. Dharma Studio had the Russian artist Wicca Morenets who paints with a focus on the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of nature and of life’s mysteries. Cristina Chacon Studio Gallery featured the works of Claudia Calle, an eclectic artist who designs and photographs by instinct capturing moments.

For my last Gallery Night cocktails, I strolled into Lulu where they served me a glass of champagne and in Calamari, a glass of Prosecco was served for this distinct walk. All in all, it was a night of many discoveries and art galore that made me smile from ear to ear. Coconut Grove you have done it again. Can’t wait to come back for the next one!

Twelve Days of Painting
Miami, FL – Flagler Arts Space will open its ‘Twelve Days of Painting’ exhibit from 6 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at 172 W. Flagler St., across from the Miami Art Museum.

This show will feature paintings created by Geddes Levenson and Annie Blazejack during a twelve-hours-per-day, twelve-day performance. By the project’s end, each artist painted 364 paintings. The works sprawl across the gallery walls, askew and overlapping. Painted on paper, sized from 9” x 12” to 4’ x 6’, they explore abundant themes, imagery, and methods of paint application. The show will remain open by appointment through June 30th.

The two artists regularly invent painting projects, sometimes creating situations that generate abundant and energetic works, sometimes collaborating on simultaneous performances to connect them across their two cities, Miami and Brooklyn. They have been painting together since childhood.

The Flagler Arts Space gallery and studios were opened by a cooperative of eight local artists working to build welcoming and interactive exhibits in downtown Miami. Space has been donated by The Thomas Center, a real estate company committed to enlivening downtown Miami.

Target Wednesday After Hours 6/8/11

Mark your calendars for the next Target Wednesday After Hours
June 8, 2011 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum
10975 SW 17th Street
Miami FL, 33132

The opening of these two exhibitions…
Rise of an Empire: Scenes of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95
The exhibit will feature 20 woodblock print triptychs depicting first the major conflict of Imperial Japan after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and the rapid westernization of Japan. The war was mainly fought for the control of Korea, at the time a subsidiary Kingdom of China. Japan’s victory was overwhelming and swift, resulting in territorial gains, as well as Korean Independence and substantial monetarily reward. These woodblock prints were made by important artists and used in Japan as both propaganda and for the depiction of places the Japanese were only able to read about in newspapers.

Tribute to Japanese Splendor: The Art of the Temari
Temari is the centuries old tradition of handcrafting embroidered balls. Artist Sharon Thieman creates these beautiful objects with a modern sensibility.

The evening will also include a special Taiko drums performance by Fusho Daiko. Japanese Taiko drumming dates back to over 2,600 years ago. This new style that will be performed is not only an innovative form of Taiko drumming, but also Fusho Daiko’s own style.

Celebration of Life and Art A Tribute to Jim Hunter 6/11/11

Celebration of Life & Art: A Tribute to Jim Hunter
June 11; 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
NWSA ArtSeen Gallery
2215 NW 2nd Avenue, Wynwood

Heartfelt Farewell To Jim Hunter
New World School of the Arts is in mourning after the loss of one of its founding visual arts teachers. Jim Hunter – loved by his students, respected by his peers, and recognized by the arts community for his commitment to arts education – passed away just a couple of weeks ago after a brief battle with lung cancer. Jim is survived by his wife, Lilia Garcia, also an artist, educator, arts advocate and former member of New World School of the Arts’ Executive Board.

“Working hand-in-hand with Jim Hunter for the past ten years and interacting with him, both as a colleague and as an artist, helped me to realize that he truly loved working with students” explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. “He would come to my office at the end of the day and we would talk, brainstorm, and plan ways to make the high school program even better. He often brought with him the list of all the awards and scholarships the students received…like a father with his child going off to college. Jim’s passion for the arts and commitment to his students made him an exceptional educator and unequaled mentor.”

Jeffrey Hodgson, Interim Provost at NWSA also comments “New World School of the Arts has built a legacy of excellence since its first classes started 25 years ago, and like so many other dedicated professionals, Jim Hunter was there, steering young talent towards greatness from the beginning. We are thankful that Jim’s legacy continues on in the school, in our alumni and students, but his presence will be deeply missed.”

A celebration of Jim’s life has been organized to bid one last farewell to this irreplaceable artist, friend, colleague, and mentor.

Winter, by playwright Robert Caisley, will have a FREE play reading, under the direction of THE NEW’s Literary Manager Steven Chambers. This reading will be a ‘sneak peek’ at the play in advance of our full production of Winter during the 2011-2012 season.

In the script, what begins as a scheduling ‘headache’ – arranging for the funeral of fraternal twins Peter and Christina Winter’s recently deceased mother – evolves into an all-out blood feud between the siblings and their mother’s mysterious young live-in assistant.

Mr. Caisley, whose work Kissing was a part of our 2008-2009 season, is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Head of the Dramatic Writing program at the University of Idaho. His work has been produced around the U.S. and internationally. He was recently named the 2011 Blaine Quarnstrom Playwright in Residence at Mississippi Southern University. Introducing the Miami Debut of Art Avenue 6/11/11

Introducing the Miami Debut Art Avenue “A Different Way of Seeing Art”
Saturday, June 11, 2-10pm
Bodegon de Brickell
801 Brickell Bay Drive #2
Four Ambassadors [Restaurant & Bar]
Miami, FL 33131

Introducing to the public for the first time, a series of multi-media events from a pair of unique creators with a truly entrepreneurial vision. “Art Avenue” debuts this Saturday, June 11th, 2011 from 2pm-10pm at the Four Ambassadors Bodegon de Brickell (restaurant and bar) located at 801 Brickell Bay Drive #2 Miami.

“Art Avenue” Is: An event series and Art initiative where visual and fine arts meet production. The concept was created by CEO Laura Morello and Operations Manager Carina Belmonte who together started “Art Avenue” in Venezuela. Morello, with a background in social media and well on her way to achieving her Masters in film production here in Miami, and Belmonte, with a journalism degree who has worked closely with prominent media companies in Venezuela, are a tireless team with a grand vision of helping emerging and professional Artists of all genres achieve a voice and a platform in Miami for their work to be seen and sold.

Highlights: The debut “Art Avenue” event will include pre-recorded interviews playing on big screens featuring each individual artist’s talent and products for buyers and enthusiasts to preview. Clothing and accessory designers, some from Miami International University of Design including Morello’s own line of “So Kyut” accessories, will be featured on the “Art Avenue” runway next to booths where Artists; painters, designers, sculptors and otherwise creative minds will display their works both live and virtually by utilizing TV screens and the Internet. There will surely be surprises for guests to enjoy along with complimentary entrance, entertainment by a live local DJ and gourmet catering and cocktail specials.

Location: Brickell is the financial center of the major Arts and Entertainment – driven City of Miami, where multi-media and Art industry professionals collide. Today represents a new era of recession and do-it-yourself, where Art has been assigned a new identity by an information technology – obsessed and entrepreneurial generation. “We are holdong our first event in Brickell, where there are so many people who want to support the Arts” says Belmonte. “Art Avenue” is another creative solution born of the idea of the importance of bringing Art to the people.

In the Future: “Art Avenue” will be held every two to three months based on public demand and its creators’ instincts on where they feel the public will most likely enjoy it. With such an amazing start and the vision and drive of the professionals behind the concept, “Art Avenue” will surely be a name we all continue to hear about in Miami.

The Lynching Eye: A Juneteenth Celebration, Art & Education Choreopoem 6/18/11

Alexis Caputo │PROJECT WITNESS present The Lynching Eye: A Juneteenth Celebration, Art & Education Choreopoem inspired by the life of Rubin Stacy.
Saturday, June 18, 2011, 6-9pm
Broward Historical Commission
301 Harmon Avenue (S.W. 13th Avenue)
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33312

Performance & Fundraiser: Admission: Free & Open to the Public (Suggested Donation $20)

Arts & Cultural Enthusiasts: Witness the power of transformation, as Alexis Caputo presents The Lynching Eye, a choreopoem, spawned and translated from one author’s perspective Rubin Stacy/Seven Moves by Summer Hill 7 of the Poemedy Project to another. Caputo explores concepts with a hungry eye for new language and unforced organic theatre, while creating a synthesis of the voice, body and word, evidence that art is malleable.

Rubin Stacy was a homeless South Florida tenant farmer who was lynched in 1935 by an angry mob en route from Fort Lauderdale to a Miami-Dade prison. The Lynching Eye relies on the mind, body and spirit to examine lynching from an artistic perspective, while speaking to assaults on one’s identity with female voices using the expressive modalities of story, poetry, song, dance, music and visual art as educational components for a touring workshop.

Featuring: Alexis Caputo, Moussa & Trina Soumah of Ballet Brika/West African Dance Theater, DJ One Star, Marcia Anderson, Sister Idya, SOULFLOWER “Empress of Hip-Hop”, Michelle Grant-Murray/Front Street Dancers. Visual Artists: Addonis Parker, Niki Lopez, Rodney Royal, Sister Idya & Wanda Paulette.

Donations are for the purpose of raising funds and awareness about arts in education via Project Witness. In-kind contributions and donations are tax-deductible. Project Witness is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization.

The Lynching Eye is a post festival gathering, as part of the Juneteenth Festival spearheaded by Old Dillard Museum & Old Dillard Foundation, Juneteenth Festival community partners.

Experimental Film and Video artist Maria Lino’s solo exhibition at the 6th street container in LiHa.

To Maria Lino, water is a treasure that we seek for both internal and external survival. It safely cradles us in the womb and supports us as we float on its surface. It can also overpower us regardless of our physical strength. Water can be a barrier between two destinations, and as an artist navigating two cultures separated by a body of water, it has defined her sense of isolation and connection, of safety and freedom.

Ms Lino has always lived in port cities. She now lives in South Florida where humidity is a constant palpable sensation. She produces multi-channel video installations recreating this feeling, and in the process, rediscover the landscape of home, its light, physicality, atmospheric changes, and the enticement of being voluntarily in water, whether for pleasure, adventure or escape. Maria Lino’s process is dynamic and interrelated to my daily activities. She observes and records the landscape and the cityscape, and their reflections in any appearance of water: morning dew, rain, puddles, or the ocean.

First Annual Wynwood Art Fair
Featuring Performing Artists Benefiting the Lotus House Women’s Shelter

From October 21 to 23, Miami-Wynwood, is launching the first annual Wynwood Art Fair, a groundbreaking, collaborative, performance-based, interactive, contemporary art fair involving virtually every major contemporary art institution and works of internationally acclaimed artists from Miami and across the country.

This extraordinary three-day celebration and exploration of contemporary art is more than just good fun, it’s also for a good cause. All admission proceeds benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, providing shelter, sanctuary and support to women and children in need.

More than a fair, the Wynwood Art Fair will be a dazzling three-day, contemporary art “happening” of unprecedented artistic dimension as artists from Miami and across the country explore virtually every form of artistic medium, creating spontaneous works of art “live” with fair participants. Fun, thought-provoking, educational and interactive, the Wynwood Art Fair goes beyond traditional notions of contemporary art fairs, inviting fairgoers of all ages to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, think and above all, make art!

At the Wynwood Art Fair, fair-goers will have an opportunity to not only meet the artists, but in many cases, work along side them and be a part of the creative process unfolding. Veteran and nationally renowned artists, such as Trajal Harrell, David Brooks, Sarah Sze, Ellen Fisher, Ben Fain, Frank Van Duerm, Marc Grubstein, Steve Johnson, Minsky Sisters, Jerry Misrach and Marinov Dancers will be flying in for the three days of street festivities to perform, play and collaborate in the making of art with local Miami favorites Primary Flight, Alouishous San Gomma, Sleeper, Calotta Pradera and Clifton Childree, among many others. Their mutual goal – to surprise, engage, delight and interact with fair goers – all the while raising awareness of Lotus House and its important work on behalf of women and children in need. The streets and street art of the Wynwood Art District will offer a unique and fitting backdrop to the artistic talent of this cutting edge street fair.

As the premier sponsor, Hadley Martin Fisher said: “I am honored to support Lotus House as a sponsor of the Wynwood Art fair. I am equally delighted to join forces with a number of Miami’s best art institutions and the Miami art community, and share a portion of my art collection with the general public. There is nothing more rewarding and inspiring than uniting for the good of others. I commend Lotus House for the remarkable work they are doing for women in need and for the Miami community at large.”

The Lotus House is deeply grateful to all of the artists, art institutions, sponsors and the City of Miami for being so courageous in their commitment of creative talent and resources to this extraordinary collaborative initiative to make a difference. Rodez Art Gallery Presents: “What Matters Most” a David Acevedo solo exhibition
CocoWalk, 3015 Grand Ave., Suite 237
Coconut Grove, FL

daas Gallery Presents: “Personalities” a George Rodez solo exhibition
The vernissage will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011
during Art Walk in Fort Myers from 6 to 10 pm.

As an artist George Rodez feels an obligation to explore the experiences with which he is presented in life. Rodez says, “I am compelled to use my artistic creativity influenced by these experiences. To live life is to feel emotions. I live through my paintings in this very same fashion.” Rodez is a Cuban painter born in Manhattan. He is a self-taught artist who later in life dabbled in art courses to further develop his talents. He believes in growing his own process and developing his own language in the arts, and lives by that everyday he creates. “I’d like to think that I am an artist with no boundaries or limitations,” he explains. Thus, I create multiple bodies of work each vastly different from the other. My mother suffered from mental illness, including multiple personalities. I made an active decision to take the lessons learned and incorporate them into my art. Each body of work provides me with a different experience and allows for all of my Personalities to show through . . . a sort of smorgasbord.

Rodez Art Gallery Presents: “What Matters Most” a David Acevedo solo exhibition
The vernissage will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011
during Coconut Grove Gallery Walk from 7 to 10 pm.

As an artist, David Acevedo has constantly experimented with multiple subjects and media. Just recently he has created a series of works in which he has simplified and aligned the subject matter in a very straight forward, yet honest way. Matters is a collection of paintings that explore a recent self-imposed remedy to ever-changing expressions for Acevedo. It consists in a body of work in which the relationship between color and shape are the primary subjects allowing the viewer to see what matters most, obvious at times but holding secrets yet to be discovered. The simplicity and back-to-basics nature of these works offer an appealing and rewarding experience to the artist. Acevedo states, “There are all sorts of ‘matters’ going on in my head and my heart during the creative process.” Moreover, to look into the world of David Acevedo is perhaps to mirror our own desire as individuals to return to a world of innocence, naiveté, and serenity as we all seek to find What Matters Most in our lives.

For additional information about the event or the festival, call 305.910.7898. Mary D. Events hosts a Women’s Reception prior to the screening of the film, CRACKS, an official selection of the Toronto and London BFI Film Festivals. Crushes, “cracks” in British slang, and jealousies are the ruling passions of this beautifully realized debut film from Jordan Scott, daughter of the legendary director Ridley Scott.

Set in a 1930s-era isolated English all-girls boarding school on the eve of WWII, CRACKS starts “Bond-girl” Eva Green in a blistering performance as “Miss G,” a glamorous teacher who is idolized as the coach of the cliquish student diving team. When she suddenly turns her attention to a beautiful, new teen from Spain, all bets are off. The film evokes a by-gone era as well as the very real erotic and emotional tensions between young women of any decade.

There will be additional screenings of CRACKS through June 16th. Full schedule and theatre info at www.gablescinema.com.

Kurt Schwitters’ profound impact on art history is rarely given just recognition. A pioneering artist in the spheres of collage, sculpture, architecture and installation, Schwitters was an innovator; he set the tone for the avant-garde. At a young age in war torn Germany, Schwitters stylistically evolved through genres such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, and European Avant-garde to ultimately generate his signature modus operandi, Merz. Designed as a distinctly Schwitters architectural assemblage, his transformative installation known as Merzbau is recognized today as one of the most riveting artworks of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the Merzbau was bombed and destroyed in 1943 during WWII. Kurt Schwitters’ vast artistic impact nevertheless continues to have an influence on artists and developing movements as his multifaceted legacy lives on.

This June at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, we modestly aim to pay homage to Kurt Schwitters in our group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition we will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Yasue Maetake and Jose Bedia. Kurt Schwitters’ comprehensive influence on art history resonates with each of these artists uniquely. While each of the participating artists has a distinctive style of their own that has surely evolved since the early 20th century, cohesively their collages, sculptures, photographs, and installations are intertwined with the multidimensional artistic relationships that Kurt Schwitters himself explored.

Jazz Gals – Celebrating The Songs of Billie Holiday & Peggy Lee
It was nearly a century ago that an incredible new style of music called Jazz evolved from Gospel and Ragtime roots, given birth out of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, Chicago, and New Orleans; by composers and musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer… the list of great songwriters goes on for a long time. Yet there are a few names that stand out, not because of the number of tunes they wrote, or the success or failure of their songs. They stand out because they were females in this male-dominated world of the 1940’s. Two of these women happen to be more recognizable as singers than songwriters – Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee.
In honor of these two magnificent ladies, KCC Productions presents our own fabulous South Florida jazz vocalists, blues dynamo Wendy Pedersen and swinging sister Debbie Orta, will perform in tribute, featuring some of the great songs, such as Peggy Lee’s “Alright, OK, You Win”, “You’re Mine You”, and “I’m a Woman”; and Billie Holiday’s “What a Little Moonlight Can Do”, “God Bless the Child That’s Got His Own”, and “Strange Fruit”, among others.
The more you learn about Billie and Peggy, the more you appreciate their art, in contrast to the vocal Olympics that pass for singing today. With their minimalist vocal style they communicated a unique perception of life, and a personal take on jazz. Each was unforgettable; first with Billie’s innovative vulnerability, emotional honesty and clarity, and later on with Peggy’s sensuality, creativity and wit.
Both women competed in a man’s world without reservation. Both have stories of their troubled youth, and career ups and downs. Both performed music in the cauldron of 20th Century history. Singers Debbie and Wendy share a fascination with these historic figures in jazz, and together with their stellar group of the finest South Florida musicians, will deliver a show that is not to be missed.

Debbie Orta recently presented her 2010 seminar, entitled, “Jazz Gals” at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida; a retrospective of the great female jazz vocalists of the 20th Century and today. The multi-media seminar included a slideshow, video clips, discussion and a live performance by Debbie accompanied by the outstanding pianist Pete Wallace. Debbie performs a terrific jazz repertoire from the Great American Songbook, as well as Brazilian and Latin jazz arrangements, and jazz/funk feels flexing her voice over several octaves. Debbie’s swinging jazz and smoky ballads are always intriguing, whether classic or contemporary, sad or joyful. Her band has performed throughout south Florida, including SunFest 2009.

Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high-energy vocal delivery, with deep, convincing emotion has been impacting audiences for many years. A graduate of the University of Miami’s Studio Music and Jazz Vocal program, Wendy began her singing career in high school, but her earliest memory is poring through her mom’s record collection, practically wearing out the vinyl on Elton John and Beatles records. Eventually, her heart found its way to jazz and it has felt like home ever since. Wendy has won many awards including the Southern Bell/Pace “Jazz Artist of the Year” and a Miami New Times “best vocalist”, saying, “Wendy can shake the rafters or break your heart…” Wendy Pedersen’s discography includes her debut CD, “Me + Three”; a Holiday CD, “Ho Ho Ho”; and her brand new release, “Under The Influence”, a tribute to the many women who inspired and influenced her. Wendy also sings with an exciting jazz vocal quartet, Mad Romance, featuring Rick Harris, Lisanne Lyons and Greg Diaz.

Urban Gospel Fest
Urban Gospel Fest Slated to Showcase an Un-Celebrated Genre

It’s Essence Music Festival meets Miami Carnival meets big tent revival! The Urban Gospel Fest, slated for June 18, 2011 at Oasis Church Miami on 12905 NE 8th Ave. in North Miami, is a free event that aims to celebrate a genre of music that remains unrecognized by the world and shunned by the church that gave it birth.

Presented by Soul Movement Crew in association Oasis Church Miami, NEWD Magazine, F-N-F Live and Vision Music, the first ever Urban Gospel Fest is an outdoor community festival and high-energy block party that promises to showcase and celebrate the pioneering artists of the Urban Gospel genre.

Redeemed from the streets of The Bronx, Miami, San Juan, Kingston and Havana, to name a few, Urban Gospel music is an umbrella genre comprised of diverse styles, linking urban communities around the world. It is the popular music of the youth who have been redeemed, yet still feel the rhythms of their ‘hoods, barrios and garrisons.

Hear the sounds of Hip-hop, Reggaeton, Dancehall, Soca, Merengue, and R&B being used as tools for Christian ministry as we showcase both popular and up-and-coming artists within the genre.

Feel the rhythms of the street as we also present various dance styles, graffiti, and live deejaying.

View videos and publications of the respective nations representing Urban Gospel music and culture from around the world.

Artists such as former Soca King, Nigel Lewis of Trinidad, Dre Marshall of New York, Mark Lee of Fort Lauderdale, Kristine Alicia of Jamaica, Rey King of The Dominican Republic, CUDS Music of Miami, LaVie of Haiti, Eddie Corona of Port St. Lucie, Sekajipo of Liberia, West Africa, Troy Genius of Jamaica, Paul Morris of Jamaica, Mr. E of Colombia and others will heat up the stage with live performances and testimonies about how their music is revolutionizing their communities for Christ.

Laurence Gartel known as the “FATHER” of Digital Art is pleased to announce the unveiling of his all new Mercedes Art Car Project. Gartel has “taken a turn” with his work, and hand painted in Graffiti style a classic 1971 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL. This is a major departure from his celebrated SUPER CAR computer generated adorned vehicles. He calls this latest creation: “Tactile Experiential.” Now after 35-years Mr. Gartel picks up a brush and spray cans to work in traditional media: Paint. This is surely a paradigm shift in society where by people use computers before they open a can of paint. “Its a completely different experience” says Gartel. One can stare at a computer for many reasons all day long.” “We all do that.” “The action of physical movement is a different story,” Gartel implies.

“I am not giving up the computer at all,” Gartel states. “The traditional painted car is just the beginning.” “From here the image is transformed.” As far as the Mercedes, it now is added to the line up of Art Cars with the Telsa Art Roadster and the Ferrari Scuderia 430 being adorned in computer generated imagery. Prints are available both of documentary photographs and digitally processed works.

The opening night reception for “HIDDEN VISIONS” is Thursday, June 9, 2011, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view from June 2 through July 31, 2011; Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; and Fridays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

“The current Art Exhibit by artist Emilio Héctor Rodríguez at Wirtz Gallery, invites the spectator to go beyond the images that our natural eyes offer us. Grouped with the title Hidden Visions, these works by the painter bring to our attention the need to refocus our point of view towards the beauty that underlies behind any surface. The photographs of different types of tissues -taken through a microscope- are, at the same time, the initial motive and inspiration for the pieces and a metaphor for all the spectrums of possible worlds, of different unexplored realities and dimensions of human existence.”

Leading South Florida Technology Executives To Discuss Practical Applications
Of Cloud Computing For Legal, Financial And Other Professional-Services Firms

Miami Finance Forum’s CEO Power Breakfast and Discussion Moderated by Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Features Speakers from Terremark, CareCloud, Compuquip Technologies and ICG

The Miami Finance Forum (MFF) will serve as host to a “CEO Power Breakfast” and panel discussion titled, “Breakfast in the Cloud: What You Need to Know about Cloud Computing.” The panel, moderated by Jorge Rey of Kaufman, Rossin & Co., will seek to demystify cloud computing and answer the main question on the minds of legal, finance and other professionals: “What exactly do ‘I’ need to know about cloud computing, and how can it support my business goals?” Unlike other panels that have covered cloud in broad, technical terms, this high-level discussion will provide practical strategies and tactics to leverage cloud services to benefit businesses. The event takes place at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at The Bankers Club, 2 South Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33131.

At the event, industry leaders will take a narrow approach to discuss and reveal practices that specifically relate to South Florida businesses in the professional-services industries. In addition, panelists will explore ways that cloud services can reduce a company’s IT expenses, enhance computing power, leverage software as a service (SaaS) applications and protect critical data.

Panel speakers include Marvin Wheeler, chief strategy officer with Terremark Worldwide, the operator of the Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas, the only facility of its kind specifically designed to link Latin America with the rest of the world. The NAP of the Americas was sold to Verizon last month for approximately $1.5 billion to accelerate Verizon’s cloud computing strategy. Other speakers include:
· Albert Dosal, President & CEO, Compuquip Technologies
· Ed Gross, President, ICG
· Albert Santalo, Founder, President & CEO, CareCloud

The Miami Finance Forum (MFF) is a not-for-profit organization supporting the growth of South Florida’s network of finance and investment professionals. It is dedicated to expand the knowledge base and professional practices of its members while ensuring the region continues to attract and retain top talent. Its membership roster is comprised of professionals experienced in private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, commercial banking, investment banking, wealth management, legal, accounting and other related professional-services industries. Since its founding in 2006, the MFF has been known for its event series, including its panel discussions, private roundtables, and happy hour mixers. ArtCenter Presents Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove Opening Reception 6/4/11

Join us for the opening reception of Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove
Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 7-10PM!
924 Lincoln Road, Suite 205
Miami Beach, FL 33139

ArtCenter/ South Florida is proud to present Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove – organized by resident artist, Natasha Duwin.
Many times a gentle demeanor conceals a resolute personality, and a softness in speech and manner betrays a certain severity. This exhibition explores the tensions between these two attitudes, particularly in women.

One of the featured works will be Shedding the Shadows, a dress and tapestry woven out of discarded items of clothing. Seemingly useless objects are repurposed into a series of ropes, with their connotation of strength and usefulness, and they in turn are compiled into a dress that is at once revealing and protective.

Featured Artists: Adriana Carvalho, Natasha Duwin, David Leroi, Venessa Monokian,
Hugo Moro, Damian Sarno, Nina Surel & Agustina Woodgate

On View June 3 – July 10, 2011

The evening will also feature our monthly Art Walk, from 7-10pm!
Join us for an art-filled evening of gallery exhibitions and the opportunity to visit the studios of our 36 artists-in-residence, featuring some of South Florida’s most talented artists. Artists will open their doors to share photography, painting, installation, video, and mixed media works in our buildings located at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road.

Base Paint The Auction– A contemporary Art Auction and Curated Exhibition By Betty Alvarez

BASE PAINT | THE AUCTION is a contemporary art auction event and curated exhibitoin to help raise funds to support the secondary school at L’Athletique D’ Haiti where Base Paint tent will be installed.

On May 25, Ideobox Artspace, SaludArte Foundation, Fundación Manos del Sur, Step by Step Foundation, and Curators Antuan & Tanya Brillembourg joined forces as they prepared for Base Paint | The Auction event to benefit the Base Paint Project. The tents have arrived in Haiti and will be installed this summer as part of a secondary school on the property of L’Athletique d’Haiti. The funds raised helped to finance the new school’s operational costs and ensure the continuation of the work that was begun with the Base Paint Tents.

Base Paint | The Auction featured over 45 artists that have generously donated works of art to help raise these funds. For a list of artists and auction pieces, visit www.basepaint.org. On hand to set the vibe was famed band Miami City Mix and later in the evening DJ Umber Bandi-Ville was mixing beats. Artist Leni Ibarguengoytia unveiled her event installation on crate boxes which will act as lounge areas. Bacardi cocktails were served to quench the thirst of those who savored Diego’s Andalucia Tapas & Deli’s paella and Zucchero Ristorante Bistro’s hors d’oeuvres. Robert Duval, founder of L’Athletique d’Haiti, was at the auction to announce a special thank you to everyone who participated in the project including the artists, sponsors and volunteers. For more information on the foundation, visit www.lathletiquedhaiti.org.

The artwork will be on view at Ideobox Artspace until June 30, 2011 on Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturdays by appointment. For appointments, please contact Alexandra Gauthier at 305.576.9878 or alexandragauthier@ideobox.com.

Drag Diva to Assist Palace Chef During Pride Month’s Culinary Demonstration

In conjunction with what has come to be known as “Pride Month,” Bloomingdale’s in the Aventura Mall presents “Cooking with Pride,” a culinary demonstration, on Saturday, June 11 at 1 pm.

Victor Cardenas Pasos of the Palace, Ocean Drive’s first and only gay restaurant/bar, will utilize Bloomingdale’s state-of-the-art cookware and equipment as he demonstrates preparation of two of the Palace’s favorite dishes. One of the Palace’s legendary drag divas will assist Victor, making for a unique and entertaining presentation. The event is free and open to the public, and all who attend will be able to sample the fare and receive a copy of the recipes.

The month of June commemorate Gay Pride throughout the U.S. and beyond, as it was in June of 1969 that police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village — an event that is credited with sparking the movement for LGBT rights in the United States. In an unprecedented show of solidarity, the Stonewall patrons and supporters rose up in protest, resulting in several days of riots in the streets to protest discrimination against the LGBT community.

As chef of the Palace on South Beach for more than two years, Victor prepares or oversees preparation of approximately 700 meals per week. A native of Mexico, he studied Culinary Arts in Yucatan, with a specialty in Italian fare and seafood. Prior to joining the Palace, Victor had worked at the Hyatt Resort in Cancun and Quattro on Miami Beach.

Now in its 23rd year, the Palace is the first and only gay restaurant on Ocean Drive. Located at 1200 Ocean Drive in the heart of the Art Deco District, Palace’s legacy of infamous weekend drag shows, Sunday “Brunchic” and luscious libations prevails today. Crowds gather to watch the drag shows taking place right on the sidewalk, and tour buses often stop so that passengers may enjoy the show! Dip Into Summer: Four Seasons Miami Pool Party Returns

Pool parties are a summer staple, but few come with Four Seasons service and style. Starting June 4, 2011, the Hotel will host the city’s most sophisticated Saturday poolside extravaganzas featuring eclectic, high energy music and signature amenities such as Evian spritzes, cool towels and butler-passed frozen treats.

This season, the Hotel will debut a caipirinha cart, a very grown up version of the ice-cream cart, dispensing $7 Leblon caipirinhas made to order chaise-side. In addition, The Boutique at Sports Club/LA will host poolside modeling of swimwear by bikini flavors. Entrance is available with a Saturday $25 pool pass. Cabana packages are available at $150 and include use of a cabana by 4 people, mineral water, fruit platter and one cocktail per person. Reservations are recommended as space is limited. For reservations, call 305-381-3037on weekdays or 305-381-3190 on weekends.

A destination in its own right, the 2-acre pool terrace at Four Seasons Miami has been described by The New York Times as “a grown-up alternative to the more raucous South Beach scene across the bay.” In addition to a main pool and whirlpool surrounded by cabanas, the terrace features the Palm Grove wading pool

Already a staple of the Brickell summer and popular with the young crowd of members at The Sports Club/La, the pool parties are a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon in style. In addition, to Brazilian libations, guests will enjoy a menu of signature small bites and cocktails served throughout the day.

Photographs of the Opening Launch of Design House at Novecento on 5/26/11

Opening Launch of Design House at Novecento on Thursday, May 26, 2011.  They were taking donations and raffle to benefit The Coral Gables Museum.

As described by the founders, Designhouse is a boutique web, print, and brand design agency. When asked about their new venture, they both smiled and responded:  If you can dream it, we can create it.  Websites, logos, e-marketing, and branding are attacked with a holistic approach to give their clients a leg above the competition. This one-two punch power house design team takes pride in offering clients the personal touch which is what they feel has been missing in the creative world for a long while. The like-minded professionals met, and felt there was a void in the business community. They noticed growing changes and needs in the marketplace as well as a rising trend, a preference for working with boutique firms and local based ones more often times than not. The reason given by proprietors was simple, to get the service that was once paramount in a relationship with an agency but somehow lost during the last few years. Gretel Vi as and Liz Rodriguez felt they had the perfect recipe as they both poses mind blowing talent combined with easy going personalities that fit the boutique style of business.

Mythic Traditions In World Art From The UM Lowe Art Museum Exhibition Preview 6/17/11

Friday, June 17, 2011, 7-10 Pm

University of Miami
1301 Stanford Drive
Coral Gables
www.lowemuseum.org.

Curator Lecture: 7 pm
Presented by Denise Gerson, LAM Associate Director
Reception: 8-10 pm
Cocktails by Bacardi
Mix and mingle with cocktails and light fare.
$10 Admission; Free for Lowe Members

Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales addresses multi-cultural mythic traditions in art, drawn exclusively from the permanent collection of the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum, which distinguishes itself among South Florida art museums by the depth and breadth of its holdings, which span 5,000 years and represent the art of Europe, the Americas, pan-Asia, and Africa. Concepts of creation, love, morality, mortality, seasonal regeneration, the cosmos, beauty, divinity, heroes, and war are explored in over 100 examples of pottery and ceramics, paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and textiles.

The exhibition will be on view at the UM Lowe Art Museum from June 18 – October 23, 2011. A preview with curator lecture and reception will be held on June 17 from 7-10 pm.

Mythic traditions are rooted in fictitious, symbolic narratives developed by cultures through time, which address the relationship between the inexplicable and the explicable, between the powers and forces that control the world and the human beings who occupy that world. Frequently reflecting regional differences, these sacred stories helped, and in some present-day cultures continue to help elucidate a people’s religion, history, value systems, rituals, and concepts of self. As myths exist apart from, and are not dependent upon, verifiable facts or scientific objectivity for their impact on society, they typically involve deities, heroes, wondrous creatures, and fantastic events. Some renderings faithfully adhere to time-honored visual conventions. Others reflect more personal interpretations of traditional subject matter.
Among the featured objects are a 6th century BCE Greek, black-figure hydria, which describes a myth about the goddess Athena in the presence of Ajax and Achilles; Jacob Jordaen’s The Judgment of Paris, painted around 1620; storyteller figure by Native American artist Mary Trujillo; an African Kuba mask known as Moshambwooy that represents the myth of the ancestral figure Woot; a 19th century Japanese wood-block print that relates a ghost story; Richard Stankiewicz’s scrap metal sculpture, The River Styx, from 1953; St. George by Moises Finale; Theodoros Stamos’ Persephone from 1945; a contemporary metal cutout of a siren by Haitian artist Serge Jolimeau; and a 10th century sandstone sculpture of Ganesha Breaking His Tusk to Throw at the Moon.

Mythological narratives were originally transmitted and preserved orally, during eras when people could neither read nor write, and paper was not available. Written traditions did not develop until a later moment on mankind’s cultural time line, as scribes and poets sought to formally preserve stories in writing, lest they disappear. Artistic expression dramatically bridges both word-based systems, transforming into vivid pictorial or sculptural forms, concepts that spoken and textual forms of communication can only convey through mental images. Regardless of cultural derivation or individual inspiration, all the works on the exhibition represent an artistic urge to visually address those universal questions to which mythologies respond, and which unite humankind through time.

The Power of Two: Influential Education Reform Leaders Make a Difference by Putting Education First

Former Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush and Michelle Rhee, Founder and CEO of StudentsFirst, a movement dedicated to transforming public education throughout the United States.

Two education reformers, Jeb Bush and Michelle Rhee will have a bipartisan discussion to elevate the need to work collaboratively on improving the nation’s public education system. Guests will enjoy a beautiful luncheon while listening to key speakers discuss important issues in today’s education. All proceeds will go to benefit education reform.

Michelle Rhee is the Founder and CEO of StudentsFirst. She has been working for the last 18 years to give children the skills and knowledge they will need to compete in a changing world. From adding instructional time after school and visiting students’ homes as a third grade teacher in Baltimore, to hosting hundreds of community meetings and creating a Youth Cabinet to bring students’ voices into reforming the DC Public Schools, she has always been guided by one core principle: put students first.

In 1997 Rhee founded The New Teacher Project (TNTP) to attract qualified and motivated teachers to more classrooms across the country. Under her leadership, TNTP became a leader in understanding and developing innovative solutions to the challenges of new teacher hiring. As its Chief Executive Officer and President, Rhee partnered with school districts, state education agencies, non-profit organizations and unions to transform the way schools and other organizations recruit, select and train highly qualified teachers in difficult-to-staff schools. Under her leadership, TNTP implemented widespread reform in teacher hiring practices, improving outcomes in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Miami, New York, Oakland and Philadelphia.

In 2007, Rhee was appointed to lead the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), a school district serving more than 47,000 students in 123 schools. These were among the worst performing schools in the country. Rhee’s efforts resulted in the D.C. school system becoming the only major city system in America to see double-digit growth in both reading and math scores.

Michelle Rhee currently serves on advisory boards for the National Council on Teacher Quality, the National Center for Alternative Certification, and Project REACH of the University of Phoenix’s School of Education.

Jeb Bush is Founder, Chairman of the Board and President of the Foundation for Excellence in Education. He served as the 43rd Governor of Florida, from 1999 through 2007.

During his two terms, Bush championed major reform of education. Florida raised academic standards, required accountability in public schools and created the most ambitious school choice program in the nation. The transformation is underway and the progress is measurable. More students are reading, writing and doing math and science on or above grade level. More high school seniors are earning a diploma and fewer students are dropping out. Florida’s third through 10th grade students are outscoring 60-70 percent of their peers in all other states in both reading and math.

Under his leadership in the late 1990s, the Foundation for Florida’s Future joined forces with the Greater Miami Urban League to establish the state’s first charter school, Liberty City Charter School, in one of the most underserved parts of Miami-Dade County. He also co-authored Profiles in Character, a book profiling 14 of Florida’s civic heroes—people making a difference without claiming a single news headline.

Bush took time out from his successful business career to serve as Florida’s secretary of commerce under Bob Martinez, Florida’s 40th governor, where he promoted the state worldwide. Bush earned a bachelor’s degree in Latin American Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin. Bush and his wife Columba live in Miami and have three grown children. Bush is the son of President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush.

Girls on Film Brings a Rock-and-Roll Attitude Back To Dance Music: upcoming show gives kids a reason to report to the dance floor.

Tallahassee’s Girls on Film, the female electro-pop sensation, will be bringing their high-energy, neo-new-wave sounds to the dance floor for an upcoming show at Bardot.

Girls on Film has been delighting hipsters, new wavers, and fashionistas with their charismatic live shows, striking appearance, and signature “glam wave” sound since the beginning of the millennium. Their music resonates with such influences as Human League, Yaz, and Missing Persons, as they create retro synth-driven textures, woven with a modern sensibility.

This will not be Girls on Film’s first visit to South Florida, but it will be their first appearance at Bardot. The band’s songs are infectious, and the Girls know how to rock a crowd and keep them wanting more. This show promises to have people jumping up and getting down.

National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill 23rd Annual Exhibition Opening 5/27/11

National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill Holds 23rd Annual Exhibition Opening reception:
Friday, May 27, 2011. 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Borders Art Gallery
1601 SW 1st Street
Miami, FL 33135

Dates: From May 27 through June 24, 2011

The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) marks its 23 years of service to outsider art with its 23rd Annual Exhibition on May 27, 2011 at Borders Art Gallery.
NAEMI’s mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental disabilities by discovering, studying, promoting, exhibiting and preserving the art of artists with mental disabilities. NAEMI strives to increase public awareness, knowledge, and understanding of art that is conceived and created by artists with mental disabilities, and to provide opportunities for their employment through the exhibition and sale of art works. Art created by artists with mental disabilities, also referred to as Outsider Art, pertains to art produced by self taught individuals, usually without any formal artistic training, whose work arise from an intensity of innate-personal vision. Although there is an explosion of interest in this art, it remains difficult for the work of artists with mental disabilities to be discovered or seen.

For over 24 years NAEMI’s deep concern with the lack of opportunity for artists with mental disabilities to have equal access to art exhibitions and employment in the arts has created notable exhibitions and catalog books. This project seeks to further the understanding of Outsider Art, the creative process, and the art exhibition experience with a uniquely enthralling art interpretation performance as well as through the work of artists with mental disabilities. The absence of this artistic expression in the cultural mainstream limits the scope of study of the human creative process, marginalizes the presence of a member in the community, and may perpetuate the stigma of mental illness. Experts uniformly contend that the whole community should be educated on the impact of mental illness and advocate for its complete parity with physical illness.
NAEMI collaborates with international arts organizations, local civic leaders, and artists to provide penetrating presentations and creative workshops on issues relating to mental illness, creativity, and advocacy.

Featuring the works of artists from the U.S., England, Spain, Chile, Mexico, and Paraguay. The exhibition is open to the public and sponsored by Miami Dade County Cultural Affairs Council and the Miami Dade county commissioners, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceutica.

All 40 works featured in the exhibition will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goal of helping artists with mental illness from around the world.

The exhibition begins with an opening reception May 27 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. – offering attendees a chance to meet the featured artists – and will continue through June 24.

NAEMI an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness launches a new exhibition with an opening reception Borders Art Gallery.

ReJoyce Miami Celebrates the 107th Anniversary of Bloomsday 6/16/11

ReJoyce. Miami Celebrates the 107th Anniversary of Bloomsday.
Wednesday, June 16, 6 p.m.
The Coral Gables Museum
285 Aragon Avenue
Coral Gables

For millions of people June 16 is an extraordinary day. On that day, 107 years ago in 1904, two residents of Dublin, Ireland, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, embarked on their epic converging journeys through the city. Their travels and adventures, both real and imagined, were memorialized in James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses, the world’s most highly acclaimed modern novel. “Bloomsday,” named after Leopold Bloom himself, has become a tradition for Joyce enthusiasts all over the world from Tokyo to Sidney, San Francisco to Buffalo, Trieste to Paris, Sarasota to Miami. Dozens of cities around the globe hold their own Bloomsday festivities

Miami-Dade County will join these cities in observing the Bloomsday 107th Anniversary Celebration with a great event in Coral Gables on Wednesday, June 16. The Celebration will begin at 6 p.m. in The Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables where we will be treated to dramatic readings of excerpts from Ulysses by actors from the Actors’ Playhouse. The famous soliloquy of Molly Bloom will be included. The soliloquy is the part of the book that resulted in Ulysses being banned in Boston.

The audience is encouraged to come in costume, reminiscent of the 1900 to 1920 era. Bowler hats, waistcoats, stiff collared shirts, dressy hats, flapper dresses and frocks are all welcome. If you do not want to dress up, come anyway. After the readings, there will be a short odyssey with flags, led by a kilted bagpiper around the block to John Martin’s Restaurant where we shall celebrate in earnest. A special Bloomsday menu and special prices will be offered.

The St. Patrick’s Day Committee, the Coral Gables Museum, the City of Coral Gables, Actors’ Playhouse and John Martin’s Restaurant and Irish Pub are sponsors. The project is presented with the support of the City of Coral Gables, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

The Bloomsday 107th Anniversary Celebration is open to the public and all events are free. Ample parking is available on Miracle Mile and in the city garage across the street from the Coral Gables Museum. For more information call Oliver or Mary Ann Kerr at 305-251-6208.

SEE and its founders, Richard and Shelley Golden, will host a grand opening at the new boutique on Tuesday, June 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Guests will enjoy specialty cocktails by ZIGNUM Mezcal and Japanese-fusion tapas by RA Sushi in South Miami. SEE will donate 10 percent of the evening’s sales (as well as all sales through Saturday, June 11) to Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute.

Offering fashionable, original eyewear is not SEE’s only focus. Richard Golden has also created a “gouge-free environment” for people who appreciate trendy, luxury eyewear without an absurd price. Sourcing directly from the world’s most forward-thinking designers enables SEE to bring true value to the consumer.

“We’re obsessed with uncovering hidden gems and little-known sources when creating designs,” Richard said. “We have cultivated relationships with top creative talent internationally. These relationships allow us to develop an exclusive line for SEE while passing the savings along to the customer. Thus, SEE’s slogan: ‘Hip without the rip.’”

Richard Golden, a pioneer in the optical field, created SEE as a prototype boutique whose mission was to make purchasing “cool” eyewear a fashionable and affordable experience. SEE’s collection of one-of-a-kind designs is sourced from the top frame makers in the world, resulting in an eclectic and unique assortment of the best of the best, made exclusively for SEE. The Roxy Theatre Group Presents You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown 5/25/11

Local After School Care Program Presents The Musical
You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown
Wednesday, May 25, 2011, 7:00pm
The Roxy Performing Arts Center
1645 SW 107 Ave.
Miami, FL 33165

The Roxy Theatre Group’s (RTG) after school care program, will present the musical production You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 7:00pm featuring a cast of students, ages 5-14. Admission is $10.00 & tickets may be purchased at the door. The musical is based on the classic comic strip Peanuts created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner and book by John Gordon. You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown is a delightful musical comedy about hope, confidence and personal growth. The Roxy Theatre Group, (RTG) is a non-profit arts organization for children and youth.

Fifty students ages 5 to 14, representing 27 elementary and middle schools portray beloved and well known characters such as Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts team. In rehearsal since February, the children personify the timeless characters with enthusiasm and confidence. The students will perform an array of whimsical melodies, such as Happiness and The Baseball Game to energetic and vibrant choreography.

Playing Charlie Brown has taught me to try my hardest no matter what,” said Jordan Arteaga, 9, playing the lead role, Charlie Brown. Arteaga is in the third grade at Zora Neal Hurston Elementary and has participated in RTG’s after school care program for four years.

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present the Phoenix Rivera Ensemble with Tito Puente, Jr. 5/26/11

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present the Phoenix Rivera Ensemble, with special guest Tito Puente, Jr.
Thursday May 26, at 9 PM.
The Van Dyke
846 Lincoln Road
South Beach

For more information, call 305-534-3600 or visit thevandykecafe.com

Phoenix Rivera is coming in from New York for Kimberly Chmura’s birthday bash at the Van Dyke Thursday. He’s the son of Mario Rivera.

Phoenix Rivera, the son of international legend Mario Rivera, was born in
New York City in 1965. Guided by his father’s musical insight, Mr. Rivera taught himself the technical aspects of the drums. He has played with musicians such as Hilton Ruiz, Dave Valentin, Bobby Bell, Eurythmics, Robert Palmer, Chico O’Farrill and Tito Puente. His most recent recording credits include albums such as At the Point, Vol.1 and Vol. 2 with Papo Vazquez, El Commandante recorded with his father, and Por Fin with Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. In March 2002, Mr. Rivera participated in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz in the Schools Tour with Arturo O’Farrill, which reached over 5,000 New York City students, teachers, and parents.

“Phoenix Rivera is one of a handful of drummers in the world who can play true jazz and true Latin with authority and swing. He has what we call in the business “spangalang” and “timba.’’ You might recognize it as that ineffable quality when you taste smokin’ barbecue. It’s intangible and goes beyond the individual ingredients, but you know it’s there ‘cause you gotta have more. It’s called fatback, manteca, moxie and a million other things. Phoenix has it in spades.” (Zoho records)

The great news of the comeback of GenArt’s relaunch couldn’t make people happier. High Heels and Handshakes-a wonderful event for women By Betty Alvarez

High Heels and Handshakes, a monthly networking event created by Christina Ward from Morton’s the Steakhouse and Bonnie Kilpatrick from Fleming’s steakhouse held their second networker for business women on May 20 at Morton’s the Steakhouse in Coral Gables. This event benefitted Women for Women.org, a non-profit organization helping women survivors of war rebuild their lives.

Women in the many business fields joined together to eat delicious appetizers by Morton’s, drink Martini cocktails and best of all meet other aspiring women in South Florida. A video explaining Women for Women.org was played for the guests and they were inspired to help. Christina Ward read an inspirational letter sent to her by her “sponsor sister” who have been in communication back and forth. At the end of the night, raffle prizes were awarded to the attendees and made the guests aware of their dedication to help women grow personally and professionally in their lives.

Even though the group is in its early stages, High Heels and Handshakes are hoping to grow, improve and create a network of like minded inspired individuals. They have partnered with Suited for Success and welcomed anybody with women’s business attire that they no longer use to drop them off and they will deliver it to Suited for Success. This just in: Women for Women International is going to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Monday, May 23. Be sure to tune in!
