PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS Acknowledge National Childhood Obesity Month With Fitness Event

Miami, Fl-September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to the health of America’s children and decreasing its prevalence in the United States. PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS are encouraging young people to make a commitment to their health and wipe out America’s obesity epidemic. They will host a family inspired fitness event on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9am-10:30am. JEMKIDS will conduct their weekly fitness class for kids ages 6-13 from 9am-10am. The classes develop overall strength, improve posture, movement & coordination while enhancing balance as well as other motor skills. Different games and challenges are employed to teach children these skills in a way that is fun & engaging. Parents will have the opportunity to get a fitness assessment by PowerFit Studio’s trainer John and Vivian Rice and hear a talk by PowerFit Studios’ celebrated fitness guru, Shirlee Fernandez. Difference Makers will provide complimentary glucose and blood pressure checks. Refreshments will be sponsored by Rozalyn H. Paschal Pediatrics. PowerFit Studios is located inside the Opera Tower at 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Fl 33132. The cost of the event is $10.00. Parking is $2.50 with validation. Powerfit Studios will also provided registered attendees with a gift card offering 2 Zumba classes, 2 Latin Ballroom dance classes, 20% off spa and slimming treatments and two Power Plate sessions. Batch Gastropub: New Fall Menu Excites by Betty Alvarez

The first time I’ve been to Batch Gastropub was to celebrate my friend’s birthday party. When I first went in, I was amazed about how casual but comfortable the restaurant is. It’s a gastropub where the menu was approachable and there was an expansive drink list. We celebrated during their happy hour and the placed got packed as soon as I got there. My girlfriends and I indulged in their wonderful happy hour menu and their regular menu. A memorable time for all!

This time around, I got the opportunity to preview their Autumn menu which I was excited to taste. I could not wait for the delectable surprises that this place that had brought my tastebuds into action.

First of all, I was greeted with a cornucopia of cocktail samplings. The one that stood out is the Green Pepper Mojito as I thought it was going to be super sweet but to my surprise it wasn’t. I could taste the green pepper flavor in my mouth but it was not overwhelming to sour my taste of the food that I was about to sample.

Batch gave us two types of menus to choose from for our tasting one that had the house made meatballs or the General Tso’s Cauliflower dish as the starter.

We began with a snack: Salmon Crudo comprised with the House Cured Faroe Island Salmon on top of Florida peaches with Truffled vinaigrette and maldon salt. This small snack was a different experience as I never tasted a salmon on top of a slice of peach before. The salmon taste came to my tastebuds first and then complimented it with the sweet peach infusing both into a nice sweet and delectable light bite.

Then came the starters, the house made meatballs of duck, short rib and pork belly on a sweet potato puree and Serrano ham gave me great delight. The meatballs were warm, soft to chew and the sweet potato puree gave it a good additive to my palate.

The next starter was the Tuna Poke-Peanut Butter “Crumble”, wonton, scallion, and crispy ginger. Although I did not taste the peanut butter but the scallion and the crispy ginger is what stood out of my mind. It was delicious.

For the veggies part, a Batch Kale Salad was served. Now I never had Kale in my life so I was delighted and nervous at the same time in trying this salad comprised of raw kale, hearts of palm, peanuts, strawberry vinaigrette, and parmesan. To my surprise, I loved it. The kale was not overpowering and the vinaigrette made everything come together. Definitely will have to try that salad again next time I go to Batch Gastropub.

Now the main course: The Drunken Short Rib which is a whiskey braised short rib with Vanilla and Sour Mash, Creamy polenta and Cinammon roasted carrots on the side. The meat was so tender that it was falling out of the bone. I could taste the whisky a bit but my memory was the warm, soft, juicy meat that these ribs had. Other than the cinnamon that covered the carrots it was also mixed with a coffee flavored sauce which had a distinctive taste.

The sweets that culminated our experience is the Carnival Donuts-fried dough, powdered sugar, with a warm chocolate ganache and Kahlua syrup. Now these round donuts were the best and my favorite was dumping it in the Kahlua syrup rather than the chocolate ganache. It was so taste was so much richer to my palate.
A very sweet experience to end this preview tasting.

All in all, I can’t wait for this autumn menu to be announced to the general public as Batch Gastropub wants to exemplify the farm to table concept as it is healthier option for everyone but with full of taste. Kudos to Batch Gastropub!

The Miami Marlins have announced that Marlins Park will host the Octoberfest Miami Festival, presented by Beck’s, at the West Plaza from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 4. The event will take place rain or shine as the roof will be opened to provide shelter or shade in the West Plaza. For the past two years, Octoberfest Miami by Vitamin C Communications, formerly known as Brickellfest, has executed the city’s most exciting examples of an Octoberfest celebration.

This year the Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee Inc.(MBOCHC) will present their Panorama Steel Band competition on Friday, October 10, 2014 at Central Broward Regional Park from 6pm to 11pm. Silver Stars USA Steel Orchestra is the reigning 2013 Band of the Year. This year, the list of bands competing for the title of Miami Broward Carnival Steel Band Of The Year includes: Silvers Stars USA Steel Orchestra, Pantastics Steel Band, Lauderhill Steel, Resurrection Sound, Karibbean Knights Steel Orchestra and Steel Away Steel Drum Ensemble. Panorama is a favorite of many pan-lovers who will enjoy the melodic, rhythmic and soothing sounds of a music art form that is the heartbeat of the Carnival culture. Tickets for loitering will not be issued here while this talented and playful street art team transforms the west-facing wall of 1909 Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood in just a few weeks. The community welcomes Chaz and Bob Gibson, aka “The London Police”, to the neighborhood as the creators of the 12th DHMP wall mural. The community is looking forward to seeing the artful enhancement this British duo has in store. All are invited to join a “Live Painting Performance” with TLP at the mural site on Saturday night, September 27th from 7-10pm.

The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is successfully rounding its second year with an impressive roster of artists including Daniel Fila a.k.a. “Krave”, David “Lebo” LeBatard, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Edward Mendieta, Ruben Ubiera, 2alas, Evoca1, Michelle Weinberg and Tati Suarez, all who have contributed amazing work to the community. Selected by a review committee, the project invites artists whose mural proposals promote health, happiness, and well-being.

When asked about the mural he and his partner are gearing up to begin next month, artist Chaz Gibson tells us, “We always try to project a positive theme in our pieces. Our signature characters have happy faces and are depicted doing everyday things in the world they live in. In this particular piece one of our characters is making adjustments to the aquarium he is looking after. As we are near the sea we threaded an aquatic theme with science and nature with an overall moral of looking after each other.”
The duo has clearly come up with a mural concept that speaks to Hollywood and incorporates attributes that this community can connect with. “We love the idea of the aquatic theme and the fact that the mural will promote togetherness. That is what Hollywood is all about and The London Police really get that about us”, remarks Lisa Liotta, Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Operations Manager.
Since inception, The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project has garnered the attention of locals, visitors and art enthusiasts alike. Giselle Perez, a realtor in Miami comments on her experience, “The live mural painting events are really quite awesome to attend! No two events have been similar and each artist brings their own vibe. My friends and I come up from Miami for a bite to eat at one of the eclectic eateries on Hollywood Blvd. or Harrison Street. We pop into a few of the crafty boutiques and art galleries and really enjoy walking the streets to see the mural walls throughout the downtown. Often times, the artists have added or change something, which is always a nice surprise! The live mural performances are really fun to attend. Meeting new people who have an appreciation for art and community is always a good time!”

Hollywood Eyes, the final word in Hollywood glamour with a South Florida twist, is hosting an exclusive Fendi trunk show and cocktail soiree benefitting Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education that began as a groundbreaking feature film and has grown into a thriving movement.

Since the launch of the movement, the Girl Rising Campaign has raised over $5 million for girls programs, and the “Girl Rising” film has been seen by over 1.5 million viewers with more than 200 corporations such as Intel, Bobbi Brown, Charles Schwab, and Facebook supporting the cause by hosting corporate screenings.

This prestigious competition began in Miami Beach in 1970.

The 2014 event is sure to be South Florida’s, Miami’s & Key Biscayne’s most gala Ballroom Dance extravaganza ever, kicking off on Thursday, October 30th, with top Pro-Am dancers from across the country, with a glittering parade of 200 or more Pro- AM dancers and Professional Competitions.

In addition to its 44-year tradition of bringing together Amateur and Pro-Am competitors from across the United States to vie for the title of Grand National Champion, this year’s competition will feature The Grand National Professional Championships. The top ranked professional couples In the United States & World Championship events will compete for this Grand National Title.

“We’re very excited to launch the new championship title for professional dancers of American Ballroom, said Cassandra Schneider, co-organizer of the NDCA Sanctioned 44th Grand National Dancesport Championships.”Ours is the only Sanctioned Championship Ballroom Dance competition held in South Florida.”

The popularity of television shows like “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” proves that ballroom dance has captured the passionate attention and the hearts of millions. The Grand National Championships, which hosts many of the top dancers in the U.S., is world famous for its exciting dance shows and hospitality.

Running the Miami event for the twelfth year, Cassandra and Peter Schneider–themselves world-class dancers, judges and promoters–expect more than 200 competitors this year. The Grand National’s judges include World Championship class adjudicators from Great Britain, Australia, Germany, Russia and the USA.

Ballroom dancing is considered both a fine art and a sport. Contestants come from all walks of life, and range from 6 to over 90 years of age. Many older dancers enjoy this discipline for health reasons as well as for the pure joy of dancing. This year’s dancers will compete in one or more events featuring various dances.

About -UOM-
UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. The communion of words, lines, or shapes meld on canvas into one-becoming the allusion of my personal reality.
My art consist of abstract drawings in pencil, color, acrylic and ink. My anxious imagination has been inspired by nostalgic memories of my poignant life events, native metropolis of San Juan Puerto Rico and South Florida.

About Marcelo Salup
1. Began professionally as a concert photographer for Vibraciones magazine in Madrid, Spain.

I was born in Boston, then raised mostly in Miami.I am currently in school to become an anthropologist with my main focus on shamanic studies. I chose this path because I love to learn and teach and therefore enjoy studying the original teachers; the shamans from around the world. I have been drawing,sketching, and painting my whole life. My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. My pieces are reflections of symbols and archetypes that connect us all. Creations that speak to the subconscious mind as well as the vibratory senses

DOC IT’s primary mission is to help find a screening test and/or cure for ovarian cancer. Our proceeds go to medical facilities dedicated to hoping that one day soon we can create proper screening for ovarian cancer, because unfortunately pap smears and regular GYN check-ups usually do not detect it until is too late. As a matter of fact, ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.

Our youth entrepreneurs program is a 12 week program that teaches business, business etiquette, and entrepreneurial education to students grades 7 – 12. Providing mentors and experiences that help them prosper and contributing members of society.

Our forward thinking entrepreneurial workshops partners with influential entrepreneurs from our community. this creative teaching method uses to plan, create and transform art. Nowhere are the results of this unique approach than in the final products more evident than in our final showcase our Youth Entrepreneurs Equipped for Success Program sell. An entrepreneurial spirit makes way for creating that reflects the mood of today and the inspirations of tomorrow.

This program introduces our children to the business world by teaching them the process of making money and interacting with Entrepreneurs in our community who will mentor them. Our local successful entrepreneurs will help to create a vibrant teen’preneur and add a new dimension to our youth. Speaking Hands Youth Entrepreneurs Equipped for Success Program is a program dedicated to helping deaf & hearing youth make a way for their entrepreneurial spirit to rise and assist our youth start their own businesses and meet other entrepreneurially minded students. So, whether they need help coming up with a business idea or are just here to ask a question, we are here to guide.

We are also seeking sponsors and donors. As a sponsor, your name will be posted on our website, on the back of our T –Shirts, and on any printed information about the Young Entrepreneurs Equipped for Success Program, and in any article about the event to be published in our local newspapers. Fridge Art Fair Returns to Little Havana for Art Basel Miami Week
Fridge Art Fair is pleased to announce that its second Miami edition will take place at the 3rd Street Garage Artspace, 300 SW 12th Avenue, Miami with additional presentations at a legendary Little Havana location, Ball & Chain (http://www.ballandchainmiami.com/) December 4 – 9, 2014, thanks to major sponsorship by the Barlington Group and returning media sponsor Arte Fuse. Thank you for saving us last week from an unexpected fashion emergency. “Fashiongate 2014” began was we were getting ready for the VIP preview of Telemundo’s much-anticipated Premios Tu Mundo at the America Airlines Arena. We channeled our Miami chic selves to put together an outfit perfect for an evening of pampering by TNT Agency, mingling with the award nominees, and warming up the blue carpet. We opted for bright colors, high heels, and lots of white. Unfortunately, as the universe would have it, our white items were marred by mysterious stains thirty minutes before our scheduled arrival.

That’s when you, our local purveyor of “fast fashion” rose to the occasion with a flurry of viable options to complete our blue carpet-ready attire, while keeping our husbands from having a spending-induced conniption. Even better, the resulting OOTD was a resounding success – it was the perfect compliment to the fabulous hair and make-up look the girls from TNT Agency gave us and to the eye-catching Charlie Lapson Collection jewels we tried on that night. You may not be Miami-bred, but you sure have Miami’s back. And for that, we thank you.

The Miami Marlins begin a six-game homestand on Monday, September 1, with a three-game series against the New York Mets. Following an off-day on Thursday, the Marlins will host the Atlanta Braves for a three-game weekend series.

There will be two in-game check presentations taking place during this homestand; the first taking place on Friday, when the Miracle League will receive a check for $200,000 from the Marlins and the State of Florida. The Marlins and State of Florida joined efforts to raise funds to build a new field for the Miracle League. Then on Saturday, RHP Jose Fernandez will present a check to Raymond Rodriguez-Torres and the “Live Like Bella” Foundation as part of Star Wars Night and “Stand Up To Cancer.”

The Marlins will celebrate Star Wars Night, presented by LucasFilm and benefitting “Stand Up To Cancer,” on Saturday. Characters from LucasFilm’s Star Wars series will be available for pregame photos in the Star Wars sections (Section 225 – 228) and will be doing in-game stunts with Billy The Marlin. Fans who purchase the special ticket package will receive a limited edition Jedi Billy Bobblehead, available while supplies last. The upcoming homestand also features ALS Day. On Sunday, the Marlins Foundation and the ALS Recovery Fund will partner to host ALS Day at Marlins Park. The Marlins will present a check of their annual contribution to the ALS Recovery Fund during pregame ceremonies, also playing Lou Gehrig’s “Luckiest Man” Speech prior to the game.

Also on Sunday, the first 5,000 kids, ages 12 and under, will receive a Marlins Julio the Octopus Kids Plush Doll courtesy of Barry University.

Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center and Sole Hotels are teaming up this Labor Day weekend to raise awareness and funds for ALS Foundation and Jeff Fogel, the beloved coach at JCC suffering from the disease.

The two-day event will host a slew of activities at both JCC in North Miami Beach and Sole Hotels in Sunny Isles. On Sunday, August 31, JCC will host the 1st Annual Charity Basketball Game featuring former NBA players, JCC teams and supporters. Also, there will be a raffle of Miami Heat’s own Udonis Halsem’s autographed sneakers.

On September 1, the event moves to Sole on the Ocean for a day packed with musical performance that will include Junior Jazz & Bradley Brown, Bushwood, Resolvers and Rhythmatix. There will be a beach BBQ as well as a raffle that will auction off stays at Sole Hotel’s properties in Sunny Isles as well as in Montauk, New York.

The event promises to stage area’s largest ALS Group Challenge that will include the pool, lots of ice and willing participants.

All proceeds will go to the ALS Foundation and Jeff Fogel.

Tastemakers at Mizner Park presents “Rock, Roll and Stroll,” a fabulous progressive food and cocktail tasting featuring many of center’s restaurants and live rock music, on Wednesday, September 17 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Mizner Park in Boca Raton. “We are very excited about this year’s new ‘rock & roll’ theme with two live bands playing throughout the evening and are pleased to partner with the City of Boca Raton,” said Barbara Finn, marketing manager for Mizner Park.  “This event has been so successful in years past we extended it into the Mizner Park Amphitheater to include a separate craft beer tasting and additional entertainment.” The Mizner Park Amphitheater will be host to craft beer tastings from the Florida Beer Company, Gold Coast Distributors, Harpoon Brewery, and the New Belgium Brewery, and music by rock band, Amp’d.

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub

The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown

The Miami Spice Mash-Up series, presented by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), pays tribute to the fabulous food scene in Miami and the Beaches with curated collaborations between some of the area’s most popular chefs. The last installment of the popular Mash-up series will take place on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Lure Fishbar in the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

Chefs John Iatrellis of Lure Fishbar, Wolfgang Birk of Area 31, and David Bracha of Oak Tavern team up to deliver an evening of indulgent seafood fare to preview each of their enticing September Miami Spice menus. Guests can enjoy two savory dishes per chef and a dessert crafted by the trio for $75 per person including a cocktail reception featuring one complimentary Botran Rum Deluxe Mojito, Stella Artois and a glass of wine from Wines of Chile (excluding tax, gratuity and additional alcohol purchases).

In its inaugural year, the Miami Spice Mash-Up dinner series has been highly successful, bringing food enthusiasts an exclusive preview of each of the featured chef’s Miami Spice menus as well as an opportunity to interact with them. The series kicked off in June at J&G Grill with chefs Brad Kilgore and José Mendín of Pubbelly Group and continued in July at Swine Southern Table & Bar with chefs Clay Miller of 50 Eggs and Todd Erickson of HaVen South Beach. The one-of-a-kind dining series has brought some of Miami and the Beaches’ most talented chefs together to celebrate the Miami Spice Restaurant Program. Savvy diners have the month of September to enjoy three-course meals accessibly priced at $23 per person for lunch and $39 per person for dinner.

UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. The communion of words, lines, or shapes meld on canvas into one-becoming the allusion of my personal reality.
My art consist of abstract drawings in pencil, color, acrylic and ink. My anxious imagination has been inspired by nostalgic memories of my poignant life events, native metropolis of San Juan Puerto Rico and South Florida.

My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. DOC IT’s primary mission is to help find a screening test and/or cure for ovarian cancer. Our proceeds go to medical facilities dedicated to hoping that one day soon we can create proper screening for ovarian cancer, because unfortunately pap smears and regular GYN check-ups usually do not detect it until is too late. As a matter of fact, ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.

The OVERHEARD series is a collection of one-person performances from nationally recognized entertainers as well as local innovators. Roberto “Simply Rob” Vassilarakis is of Greek and El Salvadoran descent. Disowned at the age of 17, Simply Rob has worked with “at risk” inner city youth in NYC, focusing on issues of sex/sexual identity and HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Simply Rob is a founding member of the Latino poetry collective El Grito De Poetas, and a two-time NYC Marathoner for the Harlem United AIDS Services Center. Miami is known for its beautiful scenery and beaches. Virginia Key Beach is an oasis of lush tropical landscape, wildlife and home to various marine science explorations. With the support of volunteers, like prominent environmental activist David Doebler, and program partners like ECOMB, the community is rallying and responding to the real need for preservation of our most delicate natural resources.

In an effort to educate, empower and inspire, power publicist Frances Alban and prominent blogger Jesus Rojas Torres are organizing this volunteer beach-clean-up. All Miami residents are encouraged to participate and show their support for keeping Key Biscayne beautiful, healthy and safe for swimming and recreation.

Organizers will provide garbage bags and other materials needed to collect litter. Volunteers will receive a complimentary continental breakfast and beverages courtesy of Winn-Dixie Key Biscayne. It is recommended that volunteers wear a hat, sneakers or “aqua-shoes”, and bring sunscreen and their own refillable water bottle. This is a great opportunity to earn community service hours.

Jorge Santiago (“Jsalsa”) is a native Puerto Rican salsa musician. In 1996, Orq. Expression was born in the Bronx, performing in many local events in New York City. This group of youths played salsa dura in New York’s streets where the NY Salsa style started. Jsalsa relocated to Miami when he was 28 years old, and has promoted his New York Latin flair ever since. His salsero attitude and rhythm are evident in all of the salsa shows he performs. The Cultural Souls Art Fair will begin August 22 through August 31, daily from 6:00pm – 10:00pm. The Cultural Souls Art Fair will consist of gallery owners, artists, and art enthusiasts looking to mix, mingle and shop for international masterpieces. Check out artwork displayed at this event from three phenomenal Dominican visual artists Alberto Ulloa, Guillo Pérez and Candido Bido. This art fair will also showcase the Enrique Guzmán Gallery, which features work by Dominican artists Mariano Sánchez, Amin Abel Pérez, Alonso Cuevas, Melchor Terrero, Orlando Menicucci, and Elvis Avilés.

On Friday, August 22, the VIP opening reception will kick off at 6:00pm where attendees can look at the art being presented while sipping on cocktails. The end of summer is looming. As of tomorrow, we have officially one month to make a lasting impression this summer season. Lucky for us, we paid attention to the runways and picked up 7 tips for stepping up your summer style. Lucky for you, we believe that “sharing is caring”.

1. Embrace mesh. This year, mesh has nestled its way into the summer runways and into our hearts. We’ve spotted it playing a supporting role, like in the cap sleeves of the Mirame Swim Ellen Bikini below, and center stage as both tops and dresses. September is Hunger Action Month. In response, Miami will host a summit to end hunger in South Florida, where 900,000 people go hungry. The event, “What Will it Take to End Hunger” will bring together business leaders, students, government officials, nonprofit organizations, and other concerned citizens to engage in an interactive think-tank discussion on how to end hunger.

The hunger epidemic affects one in four people and is growing rapidly. Florida ranks 12th in the US for food insecurity. Jody Johnson, co-founder of ActionCOACH Team Sage, has teamed up with Feeding South Florida, Joshua’s Heart, the Miami Foundation, Sisters of Charity, city commissioners, and economists to create an event to help end this continuous socio-economic problem.

The event is free of charge and is open to anyone who wants to contribute to ending hunger in South Florida.

Established in 2009, the Children’s Hero Awards honor community members who have shown incredible foresight and leadership in providing services and support to those youth who have suffered child abuse and neglect in Miami-Dade. This year, Family Resource Center will present three awards to prestigious leaders who have made a difference in the lives of foster children.

Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho, Miami-Dade County’s Superintendent of Schools, will be this year’s recipient of the Children’s Hero Award in recognition of his provision of critical educational resources and services to children in the foster care system, including the establishment of a data sharing project between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the local Foster Care Agencies.

In acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution as a Family Resource Center board member, as well as his ongoing commitment to the agency, Mr. Mario Trueba, CEO and President of Sabadell United Bank, N.A., will receive this year’s Children’s Sustainer Award.

And for the first time, Family Resource Center is pleased to present the Child Welfare Legacy Award. It will be bestowed upon Mr. Lawrence S. Hurwit, accomplished real estate developer and composer, for his lifetime body of work supporting children who have suffered child abuse and neglect. Notably, Mr. Hurwit created the Hurwit Children’s Emergency Shelter for those most vulnerable and in need of a safe haven.

Talk About it Tuesday: Protest Leads to Eight Arrests

Activists Protest Recent Police Violence Against Minority Youth Across US

This past Thursday eight protestors were arrested in Miami during a demonstration against the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and against the death of local teenager Israel Hernandez in 2013. Both killed were only 18 years of age and both were unarmed. Phil Agnew, who organized the protest stated that the death of both of these young men shows, “proof that racist police departments around the country will continue to use black and brown bodies for target practice.”

The protestors organized by Phil Agnew call themselves the Dream Defenders. Last Thursday they protested in the lobby of Miami’s federal justice building. They raised their arms in silence hoping to get a meeting with U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer, who works with the Southern District of Florida.

Eight protesters refused to leave the building when Police asked them to exit, as the building was about to close for the day. Those eight were arrested and put in plastic handcuffs. Marcia Olivo, one of those arrested, stated, “We’re the voice of the mothers in our community who live in constant fear of not seeing their children come back.” Another protestor arrested, Curtis Hierro stated, “We need more and more folks to take this type of action and make it very clear that we need action on the part of our elected leadership and the folks in the Department of Justice.”

She is a self-taught artist, who learned by diligently analyzing the techniques of the Italian Renaissance Masters. Although her studies were in Mechanical Design at the SATC Technical School, she continued her art career as ceramic tile designer.
” I love to create with the respect of human form, but no accepting the way things are I must formulate my own vision. Creating visions on canvas is a sense of relief for me. It allows me to interpret my feelings and share them with the world. My body of work communicates energy and mystery”.

1310 Gallery is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312. Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.

A TRIBUTE TO THE WORK AND VOICE OF WOMEN

For the first time in Cirque du Soleil’s history, Amaluna features a cast that comprises 70% women, with a 100% all-female band. “Amaluna is a tribute to the work and voice of women”, explains Director of Creation Fernand Rainville. “The show is a reflection on balance from a women’s perspective”, he adds. Writer and Director Diane Paulus, winner of a 2013 Tony Award (Pippin) and recently named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2014, says; “I didn’t want to build a ‘women’s agenda’ show. I wanted to create a show with women at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines.” Paulus drew from a series of classical influences when creating the concept of the show, including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Lee Ann Lester, Director of Next Level Fairs and Sean McCormick, McCormick Place Miami announce the formation of the Miami Downtown Arts District (MDAD.) McCormick will serve as Chairman of the Board & Lester as Vice President.

MDAD is a non-profit organization that serves cultural institutions and museums; galleries, local artists and studios; as well as businesses, event venues, and restaurants that showcase both local and international artists. MDAD aims to unify the Downtown & Brickell Arts District by providing a variety of programs that allow the community to explore the arts district, such as First Friday Downtown Art Night, or provide exposure to smaller independent events through a variety of membership support services.

“MDAD will work in unison with community leaders and the DDA’s [Miami Downtown Development Authority] initiatives to develop Downtown Miami as the cultural and business epicenter of the Americas,” commented Lester. “Already over a billion dollars have been invested in arts and cultural institutions in the District drawing new culturally-minded, international visitors. Our goal is to provide artists, gallerists and the public with dynamic art venues, regular art programs and education to the greater Miami metro area.”

A growing number of organizations have already extended their support including Katy Stallfus from Artisan Lounge and James Echols of Life is Art, both MDAD Boardmembers, as well as MDC Museum of Art + Design at the Freedom Tower, Artisan Lounge, Dimensions Variable, Stephen Gamson Studios, SeaFair, McCormick Place Miami, CU-1 Gallery, AIA Miami, Florida Grand Opera, Life is Art and The Art Experiences.

The Association will hold a VIP Kick-Off event and Press Conference at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2014 at McCormick Place Downtown Miami, 111 SW 3rd St., Miami, FL 33130. The MDAD Association will announce its Board Members and guests will have an opportunity to know more about District events as part of DWNTWN Art Days, September 19-21, 2014 as well as future First Friday Downtown Art Night. The evening will include live performances, art installations, and more. A complimentary transportation service will be provided by FreeBee to participating arts venues.

A conceptual artist exploring social interactions and reinterpreting familiar objects and spaces, Olivier will address relationship tensions from Opa-locka’s landscape intersecting between industrial and residential. A Trinidad and Tobago native, Olivier has exhibited in the World Festival of Black Arts and Culture in Senegal, Busan Biennial in Korea, The Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMA P.S. 1 and others.

Cox questions our views on race, politics, religion and gender using the female body to challenge these pre-existing ideas. She will display a new body of work challenging representation of the black figure. A Jamaican-American artist whose work has been widely exhibited, Cox was awarded the Chrysalis Award by the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts.

– YASHUA KLOS (Installation)
Klos creates large, fragile collages of fragmented portraits that mirror the constant fracturing and reconfiguration of identity. His works explores issues of identity, memory and history through the lens of mythologizing blackness. Klos’ work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and France, been published in Daniel Parker’s African Art: the Diaspora and Beyond, and reviewed in the New York Times.

More than a dozen musicians come together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most recognized and beloved artists of Venezuela: Simón Díaz.

Many around the world have heard some version of “Caballo Viejo” including Gipsy King’s “Bamboleo,” unaware of who the composer is, but for Venezuelans he is perhaps the greatest representative of their folklore and one of their country’s icon: Simon Diaz.

For 6 decades, Simón Díaz, was part of the popular culture of Venezuela and became, without doubt, one of the most beloved characters of the country as a singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, television talk show host and cultural promoter.

On August 22, a constellation of stars will be offering a tribute to Simon at the Olympia Theatre at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. A show that will take the audience on a journey through the musical life of the singer, with anecdotes, memories and lots of music. Under the musical direction of Carlos Puchi, guest artists will perform his most famous compositions, such as “Caballo Viejo,” “Sabana,” “Mi Querencia,” “Tonada de Luna Llena,” “Mercedes,” “El Loco Juan Carbina” and many more.

Guest artists include: Huascar Barradas, Luz Marina, María Teresa Chacín, Frank Quintero, Ilan Chester, María Rivas, Karina, Fernando and Juan Carlos, Julio Briceño (Amigos Invisible) Alberto Slezynger (Daiquirí), Saúl Vera, Rummy Olivo, Roberto Torres, José Luis Rodríguez (El Puma) and Simón Díaz’s granddaughter, Daniela Diaz Morales. Elí Bravo and Bettsimar Díaz will serve as emcees.

The fame of Simón Díaz went beyond Venezuela’s borders and his songs were performed around the world by artists such as: Mercedes Sosa, Joan Manuel Serrat, Julio Iglesias, Richard Clayderman, Ray Conniff, Gipsy Kings, Roberto Torres, Caetano Veloso, Danny Rivera, Cheo Feliciano Gilberto Santa Rosa, among others. They were also translated into several languages. In September 2008, he was awarded a Latin Grammy for their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Join us on Saturday, August 16th for the Bird Road Art Walk and meet a vibrant community of Miami-based artists, as diverse as the City of Miami itself.

Go behind-the-scenes and explore the creative process in the many artists’ studios and alternative spaces, normally not open to the public, experience new exhibits, engaging conversations with the artists, fall in love with an original work of art, enjoy live demonstrations, live music, nibbles & tastings as you go from one venue to the next.

Now in its third year, the Bird Road Art Walk, continues to bring artists and collectors together. On the third Saturday of each month, artists’ open their studios, along with the alternative spaces and galleries that dot the industrial area along SW 74 Ave & SW 75 Ave. The event features a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums ranging from stained glass, mixed media, photography, digital art, painting, sculpture, drawing, watercolor, metalwork, ceramics etc…

The Bird Road Art Walk is FREE & OPEN to the public.

The Koi Moon is said to appear when the water is still and words are mere reflections. A blessing to some mystical and disconcerting to others the moon waxes and wanes as does fortune and the fickleness of man.

MANO Fine Art is proud to present a closing reception for Allegories of the Koi Moon, a collective exhibition featuring the work of Long Looi Lee, MANO and Marcy Grosso.

Long Looi Lee was well on his way to becoming an opera singer when he received a scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York. More than forty years later, Lee continues to incorporate elements of his Asian heritage in his work. Painting koi is both nostalgic and relaxing for Marcy Grosso who recalls feeding the fish in her family’s koi pond flakes of oatmeal when fish food was no longer available in Cuba. MANO is passionate about incorporating unlikely materials in his art; ordinary jute and tree trunks are transformed into extraordinary works for Allegories of the Koi Moon.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Belly Motions was designed to educate its students and the community on the art of Indian and Middle Eastern Dance. Belly Motions strives to teach its students about the origins and culture of Middle Eastern and Indian dance. They also focus on promoting health and fitness, while teaching their students positive ways to express their creativity through dance.

Guitars Over Guns, a Miami-based nonprofit that provides mentoring to at-risk youth through music education and performance, announced today that it will hold its first annual Choose Your Sound benefit concert on Saturday, August 23rd from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Gleason Room backstage at the Fillmore in Miami Beach (1700 Washington Ave). Tickets are available for $100 at http://bit.ly/GOGOGala.

Guitars Over Guns (GOGO) president and co-founder Chad Bernstein launched the organization in 2008 to formalize the ad-hoc mentoring that he and other members of the Miami band Suénalo were providing to local middle-schoolers. In partnership with Communities in Schools, the country’s largest dropout prevention organization, GOGO delivers a results-based, scalable model for bringing the joy and discipline of music-making to young people facing adversity in high-risk environments. Through its weekly programs, professional musicians forge positive relationships with students through one-on-one mentoring and instruction in music theory and performance.

“In addition to developing musicianship skills and strong relationships with local mentors, students who participate in Guitars Over Guns programs do better in school: 96 percent of GOGO students have improved their grades in math and reading,” said Bernstein. “The Choose Your Sound benefit concert will raise money to support our programs so that we can bring the transformative power of music to more students and schools in South Florida and beyond. We are thrilled to have a great lineup of bands and some of our community’s most prominent artists lending their support to our mission and joining us for what promises to be a fantastic evening of entertainment.”

Sponsored by Matusalem, Tito’s Vodka and Bombay Sapphire, the Choose Your Sound benefit concert will feature performances from local bands Suénalo, the Spam Allstars and Tomas Diaz as well as student musicians from the GOGO program. Roxanne Vargas of NBC’s 6 in the Mix will host the event, and singer and actor Jencarlos Canela will make a special appearance. There will also be a fine art exhibition featuring work from internationally renowned artist LEBO (who will create a one-of-a-kind painting to be auctioned that evening), Krave, Bhakti Baxter, Alvin Hernandez and Eva Ruiz, and a silent auction of unique gift packages and donated prizes.

“If I weren’t in GOGO I’d probably be susceptible to gang violence, street fights and drug abuse,” said Amelio Joseph, former student of the Guitars Over Guns Program. It’s just a way for me to express myself, to just get my feelings out there. Life without music is not life at all.”
