Friday, October 7, 6-9pm
Dorsch Gallery
151 NW 24 St
Miami, FL 33127

Please join us for the opening reception celebrating the solo exhibitions by Amanda Burnham, Richard Haden, and John Sanchez.
The exhibitions will run from October 7, 2011 – November 12, 2011.

The gallery will also be open noon-9pm on Saturday, October 8, for the Wynwood Second Saturday Art-Walk.

Amanda Burnham: Terminus
Returning to works on paper, Amanda Burnham’s Terminus explores city zones,
scavenging for poetics within the urban ecology and presents ad-hoc frames that
have been swept back together into carefully wrought ink and watercolor vignettes.

Richard Haden: (RAD) Running à Dérive
With his trompe l’oiel wooden sculptures of pieces of urban detritus,
Richard Haden has been mapping the impact of modern existence since the 1980s.
He juxtaposes these pieces with new video and photographs that reflect on
he physical and emotional limits of our city.

John Sanchez: As They Are
John Sanchez uses light to re-align peripheral details as the focus of his vision. If there is observation of American infrastructure, that which we so take for granted, Sanchez’s paintings can also offer a chance to linger in a moment of respite. Light and shadow, painted in just the right way, can give us that.

About King Bee:
In Miami, King Bee is a band lavishing in an uncool world.
The dives are too small, and the velvet rope just doesn’t get it.
In response, they’ve created a traveling anti-venue, where all you need to be a member is a love for live music and a good time. Whether in an art gallery, under the laser light of a planetarium or in a warehouse with a couple of kegs, King Bee resonates to a capacity crowd.
Like scuffing a fresh pair of Chucks, little did we know, we just linked Miami to the rest of America.

DARK AGE AHEAD

October 5 – November 5, 2011

About Dark Age Ahead:
Dark Age Ahead is an exhibition based loosely on Jane Jacobs’ 2004 book “Dark Age Ahead”. In this book, the author characterizes a dark age as a “mass amnesia where even the memory of what was lost is lost.”
Taking Jacobs’ text as a starting point, sculptures and works on paper have been fabricated to further explore the themes of decay and abandonment in contemporary media and culture.

About Viking Funeral:
Viking Funeral engages with social conventions and meets pop culture with a counter gesture, when rejection and refusal merge with forms of chaos and defacement. Their media and products evolve from pop societies and their determining social systems of order. These social systems do not only serve as conceptual starting points, but also as artistic tools. Materials and objects from the everyday cultural production like newspapers, magazines, TV, video, Internet, spray paint, tape and markers play a central role in their language.

David Castillo Gallery presents Fabian Peña’s Subliminal Reception 10/6/11

October 6 – November 5, 2011

David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Subliminal, Fabian Peña’s first solo show with the gallery. Centered in his locus of collage, sculpture and painting, and navigating his rhetorical milieu of organic and found materials, Peña argues for an entomology that is also anthropology; a mysticism that is also realism; a microcosm that is also infinity.

On observing nature, Hegel writes: “But the boundary line of what, like elephant, oak, gold, is markedly distinctive, the line of demarcation of what is genus and species, passes through many stages into the endless particularization of the chaos of plants and animals, kinds of rocks, or of metals, forms of earth, etc. etc., that only force and craft can bring to light.” (1)

Add to this exulted litany Peña’s splintered eggshells, fragments of cockroach wings, and crushed houseflies shattered like glass. Manipulate them with the force and craft of an artist who is also a trained observer. Combine the meticulousness of scientific classification and the raw impact of materiality. This aptly describes Peña’s four large-scale paintings in Subliminal. Peña’s paintings are consumptive in their visual effect and their ontology in sources the artist personally ingests, including newspapers, fashion magazines and pornography. Like the wings of a moth, Peña’s painterly pastiche yields cumulative subjects, such as a track-and-field athlete in the climax of a high jump. The trajectory of the jump will differ relative to the spacetime of the viewer and their association with Peña’s referential materials.

Peña meets the viewer in mid-air, where one is vulnerable to transience and desire. In mid-air, it is possible, like Schrödinger’s cat, to be both dead and alive. It is possible, like Turing’s infamous test, to be both human and machine. Peña’s work is premised on grasping binary dualism. This struggle is evident in Peña’s series of light boxes. It is also clear in Modern Society, a sculpture that borrows the interface of a compact disc so that, peering through the CD’s circular center through hundreds of pages of historical texts, the viewer encounters a video of ants devouring a scarab beetle alive.

Peña’s materials and process give form to a fecundity of all that is, seen and unseen. Peña displays awe that is a fascination with nature itself, regardless whether the genesis lies in mythology, scientific inquiry or the Freudian notion of the artist as godhead. When Peña micro-mosaics a human skull with cockroach fragments, he references mysticism and natural order. By synthesizing seemingly divergent materials, Peña transforms, for example, the American Dollar and the Chinese Yuan into symbols of immeasurable value.

Peña’s artistic practice is layered with cockroach wings and egg membrane, paint and shreds of celebrity rags. Peña’s depiction of flesh becomes an intermediary between human and animal, natural and manufactured, self and other, the artist’s material and the material world. Subliminal is the quiet disrobing of the viewer, an emperor in new clothes, a sovereign of all that is, seen and unseen.

Fabian Peña was born in Havana, Cuba and lives and works in Miami, Florida. He studied at Superior Institute of Arts in Havana. Peña’s work has been shown extensively throughout the US, Europe and Latin America. His work has been featured in notable publications, including The New York Times, and The Miami Herald. Recent exhibitions include Dead or Alive at the Museum of Art and Design in New York and New Work Miami at Miami Art Museum.

The Hebrew word Tamim translates as “pure”, “unblemished”, and “complete”. Photographer Zack Balber offers his unique, incongruous twist on Tamim’s denotation in his first solo exhibition at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery. Using portrait photography as his vehicle, Balber intimately uncovers the camouflaged identity of some of Judaism’s most unfamiliar Jews.

Born and raised in gritty inner-city neighborhoods throughout the country, both the photographer and many of his subjects were void of Jewish role models. Instead of praising their ancestry, they concealed their culture behind tattoos and vanity in a pursuit to assimilate. These men portray themselves as Bear Jews, the fighters, and the Sunday-School delinquents: they are the truly unconventional Jews.

Relocated to the close-knit Jewish community in Miami, Balber began to reconnect with his roots. During his cultural rediscovery, he encountered men who were similarly unorthodox yet retained that indefinable Jewish spark. Interestingly, when approached with the opportunity to be photographed as Jews, these ordinarily recalcitrant men let go of their powerful exteriors and embraced the vulnerability of portrait photography. When the participants donned the yarmulke that Zack Balber wore for his Bar Mitzvah, each of them expressed a spiritual reconnection to their culture, captured within these photographs.

Balber’s portraits of men who are ostensibly Tamim–proud, unashamed, and whole—exquisitely reveal their insecurity, vulnerability, and fear of exposure. Although their appearances may initially distract us from their inner reality, the tattoos and bling cannot obscure their heritage of Hebrew day school, spiritual mentors, or even the Holocaust. Through the courage and trust of both Zack Balber and his sitters, the photographer developed a rapport that catalyzed his sense of community and brotherhood. In an introspective discussion on his body of work, Balber noted, “that religion is far more than skin deep and that a connection with G-d can always be reignited.” Despite his initial rejection of Judaism, Balber’s portraits led him to rediscover the culture that is now his lifeline.

America like it or not at The Lunch Box Gallery 10/8/11

America, like it or not with Kirk Crippens, José Joaquín Figueroa and Rodolfo Vanmarcke
October 8th, 7:00pm
The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW. 24th St.
Miami, FL 33127.

October 8, 2011 – November 26, 2011
The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show America, like it or not by acclaimed photographers Kirk Crippens, José J. Figueroa and Rodolfo Vanmarcke.

America, like it or not aims to gather three different visions of America today, from the transgression of the American culture into other societies to the visual consequences of the Great Depression. Kirk Crippens is a highly renowned artist currently based in San Francisco, California, attending the distinguished Stanford Continuing Studies concentration in Art and who has had an outstanding career within the artistic photography realm. Awarded as the Top 50 Photographer in Photolucida’s Critical Mass, and nominated for the 2011-2013 Eureka Fellowship Program (a project of the Fleishhacker Foundation), Crippens has a strong background in photojournalism and has developed fascinating observational series which has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and art magazines; among them, his widely reviewed “Foreclosure, USA” series, from which 6 photographs are being exhibited at The Lunch Box Gallery.

Crippens’ work “Foreclosure, USA” is inspired by the Dust Bowl photographs of the Great Depression. According to him, “in recent years, the financial distress induced by widespread foreclosures in the United States has become an urgent national concern. There is still much public discourse on how to solve the problem that has decimated communities, threatens the country’s entire financial system, and seems to discredit the American Dream. Lots of foreclosures, yet not much closure”.

His project focuses on the foreclosure crisis in Stockton, California. Only a few years ago, Stockton seemed to manifest the vision of America in its unreserved sense of possibility and its openness to business. Sadly, it is now better known as one of the epicenters of the foreclosure crisis. In the first quarter of 2009, one in every 27 housing units in the region received a foreclosure notice, against a national rate of about one in 159. According to Crippens, this series promotes dialogue about sustainable economic growth in local communities everywhere and educates about the real cost of the unquestioned American Dream.

The second artist who shapes America, like it or not is José Joaquín Figueroa. Currently living in New York City, he attends the The Cooper Union School of Art after being granted with a full-tuition scholarship and has exhibited worldwide, including in the prestigious FIA XX Iberoamerican Art Fair. Figueroa is showing two series, one work composed of 9 images that belong to the series “El pitiyanki: American Quilt”, and 6 polaroids of his series “Martyrs”. According to the artist, “advertising, consumer goods, television, colonization, mass media, globalization… American culture plays a fundamental role in both my Venezuelan society and my generation. In Venezuela, I struggled between what aspects of American culture belonged to me or did not; as the line

between national/American and colonizer/colonized is blurry most of the time”.

With this thought, his work arises from the necessity of ingesting and trying to digest some of the possibilities that the American consumer landscape continuously places into our daily lives while dealing with the complexity of gender stereotypes and race in Latin America. As the artist, he uses his body and others’ as entities that experience, in a repetitive form, the massive consumption of elements that represent massive consumption. His fascination for popular American elements like logo identities and celebrity influence relies on their high level of transgression towards outside identity and cultures.

Figueroa uses humor and irony as vehicles to announce and denounce, to praise and criticize this reality of manufactured consumption and identity. It represents immediacy, desire and success, all of which, after ingested, often result in dissatisfaction and guilt. Like a martyr, he puts the performer in repeated situations of discomfort hoping that he or she might find transcendence. These gestures start merging into a more complex understanding of diverse and untamable possibilities of how to recognize and utilize American culture – not just digest it.

Venezuelan photographer Rodolfo Vanmarcke is also participating in America, like it or not. Vanmarcke has widely exhibited profound photograph series that fully grasp the attention of viewers, not only in meaning and style, but in his inquisitive technique. Among others, he has participated in the XIV Shanghai Art Fair, in the project “One Hour Photo” at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, in “The Deceptive Eye 2010” at Curator’s Voice Art Project curated by Professor Milagros Bello (Ph.D) and won the title “Best in Show” in the 12th exhibition of Latin-American and Caribbean Art.

Always with an acute critical approach to reality, his vision of current America for this show is based on what he likes to call the “New Normals”. Vanmarcke’s series is a visual practice that intends to represent some of the new and problematic scenarios of the contemporary world, which without realizing it, have become part of our everyday life. The portrayed situations reference a variety of the “accidents” that are caused by the humans or the same society that embrace them. Vanmarcke is showing two pieces: one based on the BP oil spill, and the other one related to the abuse of analgesics and the excessive prescription of drugs in America.

Vanmarcke’s series is built upon the closer look, which is at the same time terrifying, and that denounces what has become a habit; habit that is reached through a complex process of recognition, saturation and almost total slovenliness towards the existent conflict. As a result, indifference, apathy, abandonment and oblivion prevail, and thus a “new normal” is born.

Bhakti Baxter Rompelotas Opening Reception 10/7/11

Bhakti Baxter: Rompelotas Opening Reception
October 7th, 7-9pm
Gallery Diet
174 NW 23rd Street
Miami, Florida 33127
www.gallerydiet.com

October 7th – November 12th, 2011
ROMPELOTAS is the first Miami solo exhibition in four years for locally based artist Bhakti Baxter. The exhibition will include sculpture, painting, collage, and installation based work.

ROMPELOTAS is a collection of work assembled through a careful balance between play and placement. Found objects such as soccer balls and office desk drawers collide with concrete and enamel to behave like irrational models of natural phenomena. Though various layers of media stack up against each other unsettlingly throughout the gallery, the work consists of very basic organic and geometric patterns such as branching, spherical implosion, vertical and panoramic support structures, both rendered and actual. Viewed as a whole, the parts function as components of an expanded portrait, with sculptures and drawings embracing the micro and macro at every junction. Working closely with the laws of gravity, density, and the malleability of mass, Baxter transforms quotidian objects into forms imbued with metaphysical propositions, further defined by the self-made aesthetic of these forces.

The word ROMPELOTAS is a play on the term rompe pelotas, which means ball breaker in Spanish.

Bhakti Baxter has exhibited at Federica Schiavo Gallery in Rome, Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris, Bravin Lee Programs, and Guild and Greyskhul in New York. He has also exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, where he is in the permanent collection, The Bass Museum of Art Miami Beach, The Museum of Contemporary Art Washington DC, and The Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art. His work is also included in the permanent collection of the NOMAS Foundation in Rome. This will be Baxter’s first solo exhibition at Gallery Diet.

The exhibition is being accompanied by a 120-page hard cover retrospective publication including texts by Geir Haraldseth, Gean Moreno, and Hugh Stockton.

For additional information, interviews or images please contact Jon Handel at jon@sparkplug-pr.com or 347-742-4380.

Photographs with an Audience 10/2-3/11

Photographs with an Audience is finally here!
Sunday, October 2nd 4 PM
Monday, October 3rd 7 PM
174 NW 23 Street
Miami, Florida 33127

Gallery Diet is pleased to present the fourth incarnation of Photographs with An Audience, a performance by artist Clifford Owens. By eliminating the boundaries between artist and viewer and engaging the audience as participants, Owens will confront viewers in a new form of performance experience. Audience members are invited into the process of creating photographs, to produce compositions that reflect the experiences – past and present-of the group. The resulting photographs, which will be featured in an upcoming solo exhibition of the artist’s work opening Gallery Diet beginning on November 17, will be presented as static objects that challenge our notion of performance documentation and the creation of photographic artwork born out of action.

Photographs with an Audience is Clifford Owens’ debut performance and exhibition in Miami. The performance has been previously shown at The University of North Carolina, The Houston Museum of Contemporary Art and On Stellar Rays in New York City.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:
October 2nd 4 PM
October 3rd 7 PM
Please arrive early as space is limited

Owens brings a new perspective to the history of performance art through the act of repeating canonical works within the very different context of current era, through the incorporation of the camera, his own body, and new audiences. He also restages historical live art works by other artists, creating open-ended situations that challenge the convention of art-making. He is currently working in a studio at MOMA/PS1 on Anthology a project which encompasses the work of over 20 inter-generational African American artists. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum in Fall 2011, a catalog will be published in 2012 with a text written by the exhibition curator, Christopher Lew.

Clifford Owens holds a BFA (1998) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MFA (2000) from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. He has participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Studio Museum Residency in Harlem, and is a recipient of the Louis Tiffany Comfort Award and the Lambent Fellowship for the Arts. Owens has exhibited at P.S.1/MoMa as part of Greater New York, the Queens Museum of Art, NY, List Visual Art Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and Para-Site Art Space, Hong Kong. Publications which have included his works are Performa: New Visual Art Performance, and The Greater New York Book. His projects and exhibitions have been written about in Art in America, Art+Auction, Newsweek, New York Times, Village Voice and other publications. Clifford is represented by On Stellar Rays and will be exhibiting with Gallery Diet on November 17.

Special thanks to the de la Cruz collection where Owens will be in residence beginning in October 2011. Work created in this residency will be part of TKTK.

Some thoughts on the work from the Fall Issue of BOMB magazine…
Nick Stillman in conversation with Clifford Owens in BOMB Magazine about the Houston Contemporary Museum’s incarnation of Photographs with an Audience
Owens: … The project is about the construction of a photograph with myself and/or the audience through simple gestures…
Stillman:… I found it to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Everyone in that room was going to walk away thinking about it for a while.
Owens: … we are all responsible for each other, because we have more in common than we think… trust was established in that small room, among strangers.

Georgina Chumaceiro and Elizabeth Hazim Directors of Art Nouveau Gallery, cordially invite you to the Opening Reception of Sideral Spheres by Héctor Ramírez

Kinetic art in Venezuela leaves more than an imprint on our memories. It remains because it is a way of understanding art as a continuous innovation, since the artist explores the infinite possibilities that can be reached with the most pure and expressive elements: line, form, color, movement, and transformation. That is why the artist, who adopts this course of action, always researches because he finds in the work of art the materialization of an unexpected, changing and surprising event for him and for the spectator.

For over 20 years, Art Nouveau has captured the hearts of collectors who appreciate and enjoy art. Since its creation, this gallery has undertaken de challenge of showcasing the most interesting proposals in the international scene, and has done so with sensitivity and courage. It has become a reference for experts in Latin American art.

Three Olives Vodka Presents eMERGE Trade Show 2011 10/15/11

eMERGE2
October 15, 12p-9p
Zadok Art Gallery
2534 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33127
www.emergetradeshow.com

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

On October 15, various up-and-coming designers and retailers will showcase their collections through exhibition or runway presentation at the second annual eMERGE Trade show. A full day of events, from noon-to-nine at night, welcomes media, members of the fashion industry for buy and also local fashionistas and fashion bloggers to view fashions from designers across the United States and Canada. Held in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District at the Zadok Art Gallery, eMERGE2 brings together the future of fashion to third largest fashion capital in the United States.

Titled eMERGE2 for this year’s event, the producers of eMERGE, Sherreth Stewart and Raymond Sancristobal, collaborate yet again to encourage these young brands to “ARISE AND CONQUER.” The tradeshow “offers exhibitors cost effective pricing for their new brand and the opportunity to showcase their collections and learn to deal with retailers first hand.” Stewart continues, “[the show] is equally important in its exposure upon this particular demographic to the city of Miami and its diverse cultures.

This year’s event is star studded; from Maxim Model Red Carpet Host Aisha Thalia to South Florida’s DJ Sandman. The day of fashion, sponsored by Three Olives Vodka, Vita Coco, Pop chips, Best Buy, JQ Productions and MontagePR, will include designers of streetwear, swimwear, women’s ready-to-wear and men’s casual wear. Select exhibitors will display their brands from noon until five o’clock; while the runway event, headlined by Aluna Swimwear, lasts from six until nine.

A donation is requested at the door in lieu of general admission fees; proceeds of which each of the at minimum five dollars give by each attendant shall benefit both the American Cancer Society and Project K.I.T.E. Both causes are near and dear to the hearts of the show producers Sherreth and Ray. After seeing firsthand the pain and suffering her late mother experienced during her trials, battles and treatments of Cancer, Sherreth personally connects with victims afflicted and families affected by the diseases; it is one of her mission’s aside from producing eMERGE to aid and grow Cancer research. The second cause, Project K.I.T.E. is a philanthropic organization in which Raymond co-founded with Norlan Delgado in 2009 to insure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and achieve success. Through a series of programs and outreach activities, Raymond and Norlan provide positive experiences, healthy alternatives as well as resources necessary in the development of society’s future leaders.

For more information on eMERGE2 and a complete listing of participating exhibitors, boutiques and registered press is available on the event website at http://www.emergetradeshow.com.

Expected\Unexpected
Tigertail’s Season 2011 – 2012 Kickoff Party
Join Tigertail for another lively Season Kickoff Party. The event is free and open to the public. The 2011-2012 season’s slogan is Expected\Unexpected, and the party will live up to this motto.

Attendees will enjoy the outrageous New York City performance artist Pat Oleszko and her inflatable art, surrounded by the beautiful street-art murals of Wynwood Walls. There will be special appearances by guest artists and the Tigertail WordSpeak team hot from Brave New Voices in San Francisco. Season tickets and other prizes will be offered, and partiers will be invited to create their own murals.

Pat Oleszko makes a spectacle of herself – and doesn’t mind if you laugh. The New Yorker says “She’s a rhyming, punning, vogueing, shrieking performer – a social critic, a comic, and a vamp.” Utilizing elaborate costumes and props, she has created lithe performances, films, installations that address trees, knees, breasts, butts, elephants and fingers. She has worked from the popular art forms of the street, party, parade and burlesque house, to the Museum of Modern Art, from Sesame Street Magazine to Ms, Playboy, and Artforum. A much decorated artist, literally and figuratively, she has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, the Jim Hensen Foundation and many others. She has exhibited and performed at many venues and museums, including a memorable show at the Bass Museum in 1993, about which the Sun Sentinel wrote, “Simply, Oleszko is the grande dame of performance art.”

The Wynwood Walls were produced by Deitch Projects and Goldman Properties to coincide with the 2009 Art Basel Miami. These street art murals were created by artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S., including Brazilian twins Os Gêmeos and Americans Shepard Fairey and Ryan McGinnis.

Party attendees can enjoy dinner at Joey’s or Wynwood Kitchen & Bar afterwards at a 15% discount.

Unearthed in 1998, this archaeological site is regarded as being of local, regional, and statewide significance and perhaps even of national significance, as it is believed to be the only cut-in-rock prehistoric structural footprint ever found in eastern North America.

Hundreds of holes were exposed in a layer of Oolitic limestone bedrock, twenty-four of the largest holes comprised a perfect circle, 38 feet (12m) in diameter, and excavation found a variety of artifacts ranging from human teeth to ancient tools.

It is believed that the Tequesta Indians, a local tribe whose known tools matched some of the shark tooth-related artifacts found during excavation, inhabited this site. Theorists have suggested that the holes were structural postholes or part of the foundation for a building.

Some believe the building was used for ceremonial purposes, as animal bones and unused tools appear to be offerings.

Eleazar Delgado’s Behind the Lights: Miami collection is wholly inspired by Miami’s origins and gives a vibrant and colorful perspective on the visionaries that built our city, like Henry Flagler and Julia Tuttle, while also memorializing historical events, such as Billie Holiday’s performance at The Lyric in Overtown. His artwork’s historical and social slant have been featured on PlumTV’s Plum Daily, on CNN Español’s NotiMujer, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Diarios Las Américas, Social Miami, Miami Magazine, Ocean Drive and 944 among others.

Curator’s Voice Art Projects All About Me by Rosario Bond 9/10/11

Curator’s Voice Art Projects All About Me by Rosario Bond
Saturday September 10, 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Curator’s Voice Art Projects
2509 NW 2nd Ave
Miami, FL 33127

In her new work, Rosario Bond reveals a fresh, creative chapter of imaginary narratives devoted to the pleasurable world of delirious, feminine paraphernalia. This world depicts glamour, trends, and what is in vogue in the female universe. In Bond’s works, Twiggy, Barbie, Charlie’s Angels, Madonna, and Lady Gaga all act as axes for feminine stereotypes. They are utopian references to feminine beauty and perfection in a society of luscious bodies and pageantry. Provocative images of dripped, painted figures mingle with imperfect textures, paint, resin and plastic, and a profuse intricacy of feminine simulacra. Images of fashion models cut out from magazines, high-end costume jewelry, luxurious fabrics, fashionable robes, designer shoes, perfumes, and cosmetics conform to the tumultuous arrangement of articles in which the feminine myth materializes. It is “beauty and perfection” as the ultimate goal; or the beauty queen as the ‘feminine mystique’, present in the illusionistic theater of our contemporary values. Using irony, parody, and political stanza, Bond’s paintings, installations, and sculptures reflect on these crucial female predicaments and the insatiable quest for beauty and physical perfection.

Internationally renowned creative misfit and artistic anomaly EVL World’s, Erni Vales has announced that he will be breaking away from his 13 show series “An Unusual Journey” to present a special collection of patriotic paintings and raise funds for charity as a tribute of 9/11 during the Art District/Wynwood Art Walk, on September 10, 2011.

Prior to the 9/11 atrocities, Vales had compiled approximately 10-15 versions of the American Flag. With perceptions of the national symbol changing after the 9/11 events Vales decided to refrain from these paintings promising to revisit the theme when the time was appropriate, 10 years later that time is now.

10 years later, Vales will debut his new American Flag series and give significant amount of the profits sold to “ Stephen Siller: Tunnels to Towers” a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the legacy and work of New York City Firefighter, Stephen Siller, who passed away during 9/11. The organization has two main programs: In the line of Duty and In the name of love; assisting children through scholarships, supporting Stephen’s House for orphaned, abused and neglected children, building homes for surviving quadriplegics from combat, and finally the memorial Tunnel To Towers Run, which supports the Weill-Cornell Burn Center and Burn Centers across America.

reception for the artist, saturday, 9.10.11, 6pm
Dina Mitrani Gallery
2620 Nw 2nd Avenue
Miami Florida 33127
during wynwood gallery walk

september 10 – october 28, 2011

Dina Mitrani Gallery is proud to present Marina Font’s second solo exhibition in the gallery, Imprinted. In this new photographic series, Marina Font utilizes images and installations illustrating concepts of memory, tradition, and the experience of adopting a new homeland. The objects chosen for her work denote nostalgia and the poetry of conjoining the past and the present. Although the work is inspired by the artist’s personal experiences, the issues of identity and how the human mind stores its memories are universal.

Marina Font was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1970 and moved to Miami fifteen years ago. She studied visual arts at the Escuela de Artes Visuales Martin Malharro in Argentina and focused on photography at Speos Ecole de la Photographie in Paris. She earned her MFA in photography from Barry University in Miami two years ago and lives in Miami Beach with her husband and three sons.

Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, offers artists talks and lectures on photography as well as photo-based books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions.

David Castillo Gallery presents Crushed Candy Reception 9/8/11

Crushed Candy Reception
Thursday, September 8, 6-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, Florida 33127

September 8 – October 1, 2011

David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present Crushed Candy, a sixth anniversary exhibition with works by Jonathan Ehrenberg, Shara Hughes, Meredith James, and the TM Sisters (Tasha & Monica Lopez de Victoria). Anniversaries give pause for remembrance and revelry. Crushed Candy acknowledges the permeability of established aesthetic and art historical foundations and emblazons the significance of saturation, humor, and celebration. The result is an arcade of phenomenological experience where the human body follows an ironic second to architecture and environment. “The medium is the message,” infamously coined by Marshall McLuhan, foregrounds materiality and creates unexpected freedom to maneuver in the space remaining. The works in Crushed Candy test their mettle against the sweet ease of perception. They take as their premise a studio practice as steadfast as iron and finished forms as urgent and fantastical as the future state of candy.

Jonathan Ehrenberg streamlines his four-fold gusto for set design, still life, pantomime, and Noh Theater into videos and works on paper. A contemporary fabulist, Ehrenberg’s primary performers are animal, plant, mineral, and architecture. Human forms are latecomers to Ehrenberg’s party, arriving after the mechanical significance of his dramatic sets, transitional lighting, and raw craft of papier-mâché masks or chiffon cloud-cover. Ehrenberg’s primary occupation is creating texture for the experience of the moving image.

Shara Hughes’ mixed media on canvas works add a visual clause to the Theory of Relativity. Reveling in color, texture, and pattern, Hughes extends the dazzling invitation to believe in personal motion whether or not the source is a train on a parallel track. Viewer association may propel the interior spaces and anthropological evidence that inhabit Hughes’ canvases, or her milieu may propel viewer expectations with a jolt of the uncanny. Hughes’ works offer a visual vocabulary as tight as Etch A Sketch and Keith Haring. All Hughes’ world is an imaginative holodeck, and her subjects and viewers equal players.

Meredith James’ videos are dioramic excursions traversing interior and exterior architectures. Using tropes of cinematic transition, illusion, and simple special effects, James enacts transparent complications and solutions to her space-time relationship with elements both fabricated and real. James’ steady rove through unrelenting stage curtains, dollhouse proportions, nostalgic television sets, and the cues of bourgeois place-settings in Present Time identifies her increasingly less as a chic marauder and more as a pantomime of humorous delight springing from her environment like Chutes and Ladders. Present Time is a digital tourniquet to Truffaut’s infamous film Day for Night, wherein a fictional film’s plot, production, and the personal lives of its actors jostle for narrative dominance like waves crashing against the fourth wall.

The TM Sisters collaborate in video, performance, large-scale installation, and two-dimensional works to break the walls of time, tense, and consciousness. Their brand of exuberant, aquarium dance rites and colorful performance court viewers with the inherent movement of telepathy, hypnosis, light tricks, and the seriousness of play. The TM Sisters use media to probe human behavior as a disco ball entreats even the reluctant to the dance floor. Tasha and Monica Lopez de Victoria hijack technological nostalgia, youth couture, and the spiritual force that dares space and inhabitants both real and imagined, organic and artificial, to celebrate as one. Based in Miami, the TM Sisters channel their aesthetic to close the connotative distance between tropical and topical in all environments and experiences.

Jonathan Ehrenberg received his MFA from Yale and has exhibited widely and received a number of important residencies including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace (2010-2011). A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Shara Hughes’ upcoming exhibitions include “Paint” at the Saatchi Gallery, London. Meredith James received her MFA from Yale University and a recent screening of her work was at the ICA Boston in 2010. Tasha and Monica Lopez de Victoria (TM Sisters) received degrees from New World School of the Arts and Florida International University respectively, and have exhibited widely in museum exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Summer Photo Show 2011 and One Night Stand Exhibition Series 9/10/11

Summer Photo Show 2011
Saturday, September 10th from 6:00pm
The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW 24th. St.
Miami, FL 33127
(Wynwood Art District).

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new group exhibition “Summer Photo Show 2011”, featuring the photography work of twelve national artists. The showcased pieces are part of a call for entries oriented to artists working in all styles of photography including any mixed-media art that utilized photography as one of its forms of expression. All photographic methods, formats, types and schools were welcomed.

In this show, The Lunch Box Gallery is exhibiting works of insightful conceptual ideals materialized through exceptional craftsmanship, which are intended to represent fascinating takes and points of view in photography nowadays. The range of photography tendencies to be found in the show is vast: from experimental and documentary photography, to observational, underwater and narrative photography, they all convey on representing an individual concept and a very particular way of externalizing it.

Photographers participating in the show include:
Troy Colby (Kansas), Wes Kline (Florida), Charlotta Hauksdottir (California), Jordan Baumgarten (New Jersey), Bill Miller (New York), Claire Nelson (Florida), Anastasia Samoylova (Illinois), Marc Sirinsky (Virginia), Deb Schwedhelm (Florida), Missy Nuzzo (Pennsylvania), Alex Crowell (California) and Ernesto Barreto (Florida).

Along with the “Summer Photo Show 2011”, the gallery will be having its 3rd “One Night Stand Exhibition Series” project, where every month a promising Florida photography student is selected to exhibit in the gallery during the popular Gallery Walks, every second Saturday of the month. This time, the documentary series entitled “A Single Moment” from the Miami International University of Art and Design student Janel Kilnisan will be featured.

According to Janel, “Everyone has a moment in the day where they want to just get away from the chaos of the world, and escape in their own thoughts. Reflecting on life, figuring out where to go next, or how they ended up here in this moment. This series is a narrative portrait series that explores that of the everyday individual, the people that could be your friend, brother, sister, neighbor, or mother. I chose to photographs my subjects in their own environment, capturing them at the quietest, loneliest, even most personal moments; the moment where they are in there own thoughts.”

Janel chooses to shot this series with her medium format, twin lens camera. Using it allowed her to be at the same level with her subjects, utilizing her camera more as a window and allowing the viewer to become a spectator into her subject’s world.

Rising Artist Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month By Putting It All On The Clothesline, Exposing Memories Of Native Past

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi unveils How I Lost My Accent: The Black and White Series – a pop-up exhibition about the Colombian artist’s repressed and unearthed memories. In addition to presenting new oil and mixed media paintings, a series of clotheslines mounted with dated worn dresses, pinned with weathered black and white photos and antique dolls, will transform the space into a virtual maze of the unconscious mind. Reconstructing and romanticizing the past with found objects and two-dimensional works, Moreno-Yaghoubi creates a tangible reflection of her memory for viewers. For more information please visit www.ceciliamyart.com or call 917.295.0191.

On view until October 8, 2011, events are free and open to the public, including:

· Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. | Panel Discussion featuring Miami’s visual arts leaders, curated by Vanessa Garcia (Krane, Inc. performance arts group, The Miami Herald’s “20 Under 40”, nationally-published writer)

· Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. | A bittersweet ending, closing reception with custom “black and white” Cakeshooters courtesy of Sprinkles cakes

“As a Colombian immigrant who – even after 40 years – struggles with feelings of displacement, I have rewritten my past many times to fit into this country’s melting pot philosophy,” said Moreno-Yaghoubi. “Coming of age in America, I felt rushed to lose my accent and adopt a new identity. The Black and White Series is inspired by my childhood memories and how watching my mother sew, collect odds and ends, and hang-on to everything for fear that it could be taken away has informed my artistic voice.”

In Cali, Colombia, the artist often spent time playing with her dolls beside her mother while she labored over the sewing machine, making clothes to sell and generate income for her eight children. The exhibit How I Lost My Accent: The Black and White Series is a reflection of Moreno-Yaghoubi’s experiences and nostalgic nature, and has generously been supported by DACRA. In addition to aforementioned event dates, the pop-up exhibit will be open September 10 to October 8, 2011, Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sunny Suits Exhibition at Fredric Snitzer Gallery Opening Reception 9/9/11

Sunny Suits Regular Lovers
Opening Reception: Friday September 9, 2011 7:30-10 pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery
2247 NW 1st Place
Miami, FL 33127

September 9 – October 3, 2011

Sunny Suits’ solo exhibition is titled Regular Lovers, borrowing its name from a Philippe Garrel film. Like Garrel, Suits works from her own life and relationships, giving us starkly honest insights into her private world through the portrayal of friends and lovers.

The photographs individually offer us glimpses of respective figures in Suits’ life. As with the work of Garrel, Cassavetes, or even Fassbinder the same characters reoccur throughout her work. Whilst her photographs speak in conjunction with social realism through their honest presentations, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the collection is how Suits herself manages to authentically capture this aesthetic. These are not candid photos, yet they betray the same intimacy as if they were impromptu. Even when the subjects look into the camera itself, it seems it is Suits they see rather than a lens; it is she they continually respond to rather than the camera.

Accompanied by contextualizing still lives, the sense of Suits’ consistent presence in each situation, in each photograph, lends an intimacy beyond the relationships displayed between couples; their setting, either indoors or in darkness, further privatizes the situation. It is, in fact, Suits’ own engagement with her friends and lovers and her comprehension of the dynamics of the lovers she photographs that gives the exhibition it’s true narrative. The photographs present viewers with a narrative of unusually honest self-reflection through the engagement of others.

A soundtrack of music selected by Suits especially for Regular Lovers will play throughout the exhibition.

Local Artist Group Exhibition Opens at Alberto Linero Gallery 9/8/11

Local Artist Group Exhibition Opens for Second Saturday
Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m,
Alberto Linero Gallery
2294 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami

Alberto Linero Gallery Turns New Leaf With Fall Season,
Focused Direction, Curator Adriana Carvalho & Pink Bastard Art Collective

Alberto Linero Gallery presents September, a group exhibition organized by art collective Pink Bastard, featuring the works of seven established Miami artists. Principal Alberto Linero, who renovated the space earlier this year and took reins of the gallery’s artistic and business direction, is now tapping outside talent with guest curator, Adriana Carvalho (Pink Bastard, ArtCenter/South Florida, Art Miami “Director’s Choice”). September was conceptualized to inform the artists’ view of day-to-day life in Miami.

Slated to coincide with Wynwood’s monthly Second Saturday Art Walk, the opening reception will feature a selection of fine wine and cheeses. The event is free and open to the public, and the show will be on view through October 8, 2011. For more information please call 305.587.0172, email info@albertolinerogallery.com or visit www.albertolinerogallery.com.

“We are embracing September as a fresh start and new beginning,” said principal Linero. “Our city is so very rich with talent that we invited Adriana and her group, ‘Pink Bastard,’ to celebrate Miami and its everyday occurrences and idiosyncrasies through an alternative lens.”

Participating artists include: Eddie Arroyo, Adriana Carvalho, Charles Falarara, Kevin Foltz, Cory Foote, Kathy Kissik, Franklin Sinanan and David Zalben. A brief description of select artists’ works follows:

– Photographer Cory Foote creates images in traditional black and white film of subjects ranging from portraits to beautiful natural landscapes. A selection of Foote’s pieces will probe the viewer with undertones of melancholy and atypical use of color and hues.

– “A simple line of wire can tell a story.” David Zalben uses metal wire to animate life’s simplicities and push his own boundaries as an artist, reducing ideas to their very core by representing them as an outline. In this exhibition, the artist will be showcasing a special collection of wire-written poems.

– Adriana Carvalho describes her work as delicately transforming items, such as metal and cloth products, into pieces that stand for her dreams, fears and social commentary. September will showcase a series of Adriana’s new works, including her Insomnia installation, which highlights the poetry of everyday life using a pillow and a rug.

Gallery Diet Miami Behind The Curtain, A Lock of Hair Falling Group Show Opening 9/1/11

Behind The Curtain, A Lock of Hair Falling with works by Joshua Abelow, Sarah Conaway, Talia Chetrit, Debo Eilers, Nicolas Lobo, Martin Oppel, and George Woodman.
Opening Reception, September 1st, 2011. 7-10pm
Gallery Diet
174 NW 23rd Street
Miami, Florida 33127

September 1st – October 1st, 2011

Behind The Curtain, A Lock of Hair Falling is a line from a poem written by Matthew Abess, expert chef of ostrich eggs and Assistant Curator at The Wolfsonian Museum. The line is a compression of a scene, described some years after its occurrence, wherein the Fuehrer emerges from a private suite in the public light of the hotel balcony, presenting himself to the crowds below. The works of Joshua Abelow, Sarah Conaway, Talia Chetrit, Debo Eilers, Nicolas Lobo, Martin Oppel, and George Woodman come together to form an atmospheric fog of delusional pop, figurative indulgence and playfulness bordering on pornography.

The artists in the exhibition live in Miami, New York City, and Los Angeles, creating a triangular network; this triangle is reflected physically in various works in the show. Neon colors, hard cold lines, and filtered light are threads. Pee Wee’s playhouse is a note. The exhibition opens on September 1st, trailing the end of the radiating summer heat in Miami.

Gallery Diet is a contemporary art gallery located in the Wynwood District of Miami, Florida where it has existed since 2007. The gallery has produced nearly 30 solo and group exhibitions by emerging and under represented artists from around the world. Many of these exhibitions have been documented in hard cover print editions. Represented artists include Kristopher Benedict, Charley Friedman, Christy Gast, Richard Höglund, Fabienne Lasserre, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski.

Youth L.E.A.D. (YL), a food justice organization that empowers youth to increase access to healthy foods in underserved areas through training and apprenticeships, will partner with O-Cinema, a new independent nonprofit cinema in Wynwood, to host a food justice film series starting September 14 at 6pm. Each date of the series will include giveaways from a local, sustainable, healthy food retailer. The first film, Forks over Knives, will be screened on September 14 Sandesha and Dion Taylor of RAW ONE will be providing complimentary “live food” snacks from 6-7pm before the show. Tickets are $10.50, and proceeds benefit YL and O Cinema. Additional films and activities will occur on October 22 from noon-3pm and November 8 from 6-9pm.

Forks over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. The main storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering researchers, Dr. T., Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. The filmmakers travel with the two doctors on their separate but similar paths, from their childhood farms there they both produced “nature’s perfect food”, to China and Cleveland, where they explored ideas that challenged the established thinking and shook their own core beliefs. Cafeina Wynwood Exhibition Center

As the 10 year anniversary of the day approaches, Leonardo Hidalgo, internationally known pop artist based in Miami, will be telling the story of 9/11 from an artistic uplifting perspective through his eye popping vibrant color large scale paintings. A private unveiling will take place in honor of The City Of Miami Firefighters who will be in attendance.

This exhibition is designed to give Miami residents and art enthusiasts a place to go and experience the visual feast artist Hidalgo has created consisting of 18 pieces of large scale paintings exploring the meaning of good and evil, heroes, freedom, liberty, and the force of divine justice while honoring the memory of those lost in the attacks of 9/11 in New York, the firefighters, police rescue units and the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to defend our liberty.

Hidalgo says, “I think it will be a very special moment to be together that night with the firefighters, our true heroes, and honor them while REMEMBERING a moment in history that changed the world forever. I hope that with my art I can make people feel and believe in liberty, justice, and spread some heroic virtues in the consciousness of society.”

Hidalgo’s unique style combines pop art, the American way of life, comics of his time, and Japanese art.

Ecuadorian by birth, Hidalgo, has made the United States his home since 1990 and lives painting as a career ever since. His work has attracted international acclaim and is collected worldwide for his fine art paintings and memorable portraits of famous faces. He melds photography, computer graphics, pastels, paint and fabric to create his wide variety of individual art pieces.

The exhibition will be on view from September 9 through September 25, 2011. Call 786-217-0130 for a private tour.

Curator’s Voice Art Projects invites you to All About Me by Rosario Bond 8/13/11

Saturday August 13, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Hard Poems in Space Sneak Peak This Saturday 8/13/11

Hard Poems in Space. A new collaborative project between NDS and Gallery Diet, bringing together invited Artists and Designers to make functional objects to be displayed as an interactive social environment at NDS.

Including, Bhakti Baxter, Agathe Snow, Gean Moreno, Christy Gast, Ernesto Oroza, Jim Drain, Martin Oppel, Nektar De Stagni, Daniel Milewski, Paola Pivi, Emmett Moore, Rene Gonzalez, Fabienne Lasserre, Confetti System, Dennis Palazzolo, Aranda/Lasch.

The project, which began during the summer of 2011 through as series of workshops at NDS (Nektar De Stagni Shop) and Gallery Diet, was conceived in order to bring together invited Artists and Designers to make functional objects. Participants are working collaboratively or individually, but with the goal of creating an overall exchange between different practices, as well as create a cohesive and interactive social environment, to open on Fashion’s Night Out on September 8th, 2011, at the NDS Design District Space.

The projects collaborative spirit is manifesting in three parts; a Brainstorm, a Buildout, and the Exhibition.

The Brainstorm phase consists of a series of workshops/discussions which bring together exhibition participants and industry leaders and innovators (July/August). The most recent discussions featured Alexandra Cunningham, director of exhibitions for Design Miami and Terrence Riley, former director of MOMA NY.

The Buildout portion of the project is currently taking place (August) at both the NDS and Gallery Diet spaces and consists of an open studio practice, where participants are being encouraged to work inside of a communal space (also open to viewers) and begin building their object prototypes. On display is also text outlining the project and excerpts for various emails and web posts which have served as inspiration and fostered exchange between the participants.

The Exhibition portion of this project is the final showcase at NDS this Fall. All of the prototypes created for the project will come together and form one cohesive, interactive environment which will be activated by a series of dinners, performances, and events throughout the fall. (Programming highlights TBA)

Timothy Buwalda, The Birthplace, 2011, Oil on Canvas, 78 x 116.5 in.

Blue–statistically the most popular color–can soothe or electrify; it can convey mourning or celebration, melancholy or elation. Although
we commonly associate both the Blues and Picasso’s “Blue Period” with suffering, the color blue can also connote erotic passion, security, infinity, purity, fluent thought, and spiritual ascension.

The Fredric Snitzer Gallery’s “Summer Time Blues” exhibition features artists Alice Aycock, Zack Balber, Loriel Beltran, Timothy Buwalda, Sean Dack, Jacin Giordano, Luis Gispert, Gavin Perry, Bert Rodriguez, Diego Singh, and Michael Vasquez, each of whom distinctly and intuitively explores the color which arguably has the greatest emotional and spiritual range.

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its last month of the show “Corrosion” by acclaimed Venezuelan photographer Rodolfo Vanmarcke on August 13, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127.

Corrosion is a photographic series by artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke, that was born in 2008 to reference the strength of contrast, the passion for the opposites and the imposition of an aesthetic over another one in order to create a canvas full of almost tactile textures, which
allow to read between the lines an image that it was, but that will never be again its original beauty. According to Vanmarcke, the art pieces reject any visual fidelity in the viewer to
new shapes that go beyond traditional photography, and incorporate themselves into new mixed techniques of visual expression.

The exhibition explores the politics surrounding the treatment of animals, and his subjects are some of Miami’s most famous faces, including Brooke Hogan, Ines Rivero, Katrina Campins, Tracy Mourning, Michelle Pooch and Tara Solomon, to name a few. Each woman is captured as an artistic nude as part of PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. Eighty percent of the proceeds from all sales of these photographic works will be donated to PETA. This powerful, sensual exhibition will be on display from Aug. 12 through Sept. 10.

About Jordan Michael Zuniga:
Growing up with wooden cameras as toys, and with a mother who is an artist and a father who has been a working photographer for more than 40 years, it is no surprise that Jordan today lives in Miami and is surrounded by beauty and creativity.

At age 19 with $700 in cash and a backpack full of ambition, Jordan jumped on a UK-bound plane with the intention of living in Europe, seeing the world and finding out where photography could take him. In Amsterdam, he quickly made friends with a local photographer who showed him what fashion photography looked like. Within a few months he was hooked. 90 Miles: Living In The Vortex 8/13/11

90 Miles: Living In The Vortex
Saturday, August 13, 6pm-10pm
DotFiftyOne Gallery 51 NW 36 Ave Miami, Florida 33127
51 NW 36 Ave Miami, Florida 33127
www.dotfiftyone.com

Dot Fiftyone is pleased to present, 90 Miles: Living In The Vortex, a solo show by Havana-based artist, Sandra Ramos, one of the most renowned Cuban Contemporary artists. This will be the first solo exhibition for the artist with Dot Fiftyone and the second solo show presentation in our city, the first being in 2003.

The show takes its name from the core artwork in the exhibition 90 Miles1. It consists of a 32-foot poetic installation that works as a symbolic bridge between Havana and Miami. The allegoric walkway is composed of twelve pictures of the Straits of Florida taken by the artist from an airplane during her trip from Havana to Miami in May 2011. The pieces are displayed in light boxes, which the public can walk on, representing the possibility of overcoming more than half a century of separation, anguish and differences in the Cuban recent history.
Focused on the sea as a connecting curatorial thread, the show features two series: “Sea of Sorrows” (2004), and “Secret Fears” (2011). These beautifully crafted series deal with the unique reverie-like atmosphere that typifies Sandra Ramos’ autobiographical universe in which impossibility, solitude and chimera are essential elements.
The exhibition includes three animation videos addressing the obsession of escape at any cost.
The show is curated by Miami-based art critic and curator Janet Batet, who explains: “The passage on the bridge is a quasi-mystical experience. Under our feet, we can feel the weight of that sort of Styx, that is the Straits of Florida to the Cuban identity, while -as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz- we realize that we are finally ready to come back Home.”

About the Artist
Sandra Ramos is one of the most renowned Cuban Contemporary leading artists. Her autobiographical groundbreaking universe deals with the pressing issue of the Cuban Diaspora and split identity.

Born in Havana in October 1969, she studied Fine Arts at the Higher Institute of Arts of Cuba. Her work is in public and private collections among them: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MOMA The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana; Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Florida; MAM Miami Art Museum, Miami; Ludwig Forum fur Kunst, Aachen; Fuchu Art Museum in Tokyo and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna.

Following the opening reception, gallery hours will be Monday-Friday, 12 P.M. to 7 P.M. On Saturdays private viewings will be available by appointment

Further information regarding the exhibitions is available by calling (305) 573-9994, via e-mail dot@dotfiftyone.com or jbatet@hotmail.com and online at www.dotfiftyone.com.

Summer Time Blues at Fredric Snitzer Gallery 8/13/11

Second Saturday Opening: Saturday August 13, 2011 7:30-9:30pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery
2247 NW 1st Place
Miami, FL 33127
August 3 – September 5, 2011

In the words of Eddie Cochran and Jerry Capehart, “Ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” So, why not embrace them?

With the persistent blazing heat and the relentless threat of hurricanes looming in our blue skies, Miami summers can be all too monotonous. As summer comes to a close here, there is no escaping the dive back into reality. At times every individual experiences the blues however, when overcome one can acquire newly found freedom. Blue, the overwhelming color of choice by both males and females is considered a constant in our lives. It can be both calming and dependable while conversely referencing sadness and melancholy undertones. Both the musical Blues and Picasso’s blue period were produced through inspiration brought on by hardships. The August group show at Fredric Snitzer Gallery has them swimming through the Summer Time Blues, before the wave of action rolls through Miami this fall.

The Summer Time Blues exhibition will feature works by: Alice Aycock, Zack Balber, Loriel Beltran, Timothy Buwalda, Sean Dack, Jacin Giordano, Luis Gispert, Gavin Perry, Bert Rodriguez, Diego Singh, and Michael Vasquez; each working with the color blue in their own distinct and intuitive way. The body of work within this show connect through a variety of themes directly dealing with the color blue, best expressed through nature, beauty, and energy.

House Sundays in Miami Grand Opening 7/24/11

Sunday, July 24th.
Villa 221
221 NE 17th Street
Miami, FL 33132.

House Sundays is a new gay Sunday night in Miami with a Grand Opening on Sunday, July 24th.

The venue is a house that has been turned into a nightclub and event space. (It is actually two houses connected). They opened about eight months ago and have been asking Edison Farrow / SoBeSocialClub.com to be involved with a gay night since they opened. But, at the time he already had three weekly events and was not able to add any new nights to his schedule. Recently, Buck15 got involved with the house. They now have one house which they call “Buck House”.

House Sundays will be a fun house party! There are several different rooms. So, it can have a different feel each week depending on which rooms are open. There is a front yard with lounge chairs, and a front porch. One side has a bar and DJ. The other side has a bar in the former dining room and a DJ by the fireplace. The upstairs has been transformed into a stunning art gallery.

The house is located just off of 17th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. It is the first house behind the Burger King. It is three blocks north of the Arsht Center and two blocks west of the Venetian Causeway to Miami Beach. The address is 221 NE 17th Street Miami, FL 33132.

A Wynwood Photo Essay by Ralph Ventura

{A Guest Article by Photographer and Writer Ralph Ventura.}

Tomorrowland
by Ralph Ventura

Urban, hip, gritty, gentrified, artsy, blue-collar, new, and decaying. Wynwood is a place that defies description and one that presents us with a paradox.

Wynwood had it’s origins in the great Puerto Rican migration of the 1950’s. People came here in droves seeking a better life for themselves and their families, seeking a better tomorrow. Like immigrants before them, they founded a neighborhood that met their needs and reflected their character, all within the limited resources available to them. Through the years, Wynwood remained an island of genuineness in a city that was constantly being remade. It was an area apart.

As with many areas where rents are low and warehouse space plentiful, Wynwood eventually attracted artists. The artists in turn attracted the galleries, which in turn attracted collectors, dealers, restaurants, bars and speculators, all in search of their own tomorrow. Where once much of the neighborhood stood as an example of urban decay, it is now an example of “urban-chic”. The hipsters and the yuppies (can we still use “yuppie” in the 21st Century?) abound. If you look carefully enough, you’ll be just as likely to see young moms carefully cradling their infants as college kids carefully cradling their vintage 1980 Canon A-1s (you know, the one from the Winter Olympic Games?). Of course, this is all you’ll see as long as you stay on the main drags.

Venture just a little bit east or west of Miami Avenue or Second Avenue and you’ll encounter another Wynwood, one where the locals still live. La Boricua Restaurant, La Perla Bar, Guanabacoa Market and many single family houses, duplexes and courtyard apartments reveal a Wynwood that is very urban but not at all “chic”. Not much has changed, here. The locals live and love much as they have for fifty years, each in search of their slice of America, each hoping for their own better tomorrow for themselves and their children.

So, what to make of Wynwood? Well, that leads us to the paradox. For all its recent strides, Wynwood still is an example of urban decay. Many structures are boarded up; many that aren’t are in very poor states of repair nonetheless. Fix it, clean it up, paint it, . . . gentrify it? Still, if we turn the urban decay into urban chic what will happen to the locals? What will happen to their Tomorrowland?

Corrosion is aphotographic series by artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke, that was born in 2008 toreference the strength of contrast, the passion for the opposites and theimposition of an aesthetic over another one in order to create a canvas full ofalmost tactile textures, which allow to read between the lines an image that itwas, but that will never be again its original beauty. According to Vanmarcke, the art pieces reject any visual fidelity in theviewer to herald new shapes that go beyond traditional photography, andincorporate themselves into new mixed techniques of visual expression.

Vanmarcke’s series is the result of aparadoxical encounter between the human body (overall, the female bodyphotographed assymbol of glamour and eroticism), and textures that cohabit in our everydaylife, but that nevertheless go unnoticed.

Inhis images, a photograph of a body overcome by an act of sensuality manifeststhe thin line between pureness and impureness, between the natural and what canbecome pagan. At the same time, the sublimation of an idealized body is rescuedand humanized by means of the use of photographed textures that repeat themselveswithin the world of the things: a crack on the wall, a blotch of paint onconcrete, a rusty object, cigarette ashes or even an old and scratched fryingpan. For the artist, all of these symbolize the wear-out of life, theinevitable pass of human time, the filth of routine, and mortality.

As a result of this juxtaposition, Vanmarcke’s series initiates a battle betweenthe beautiful and the ugly, both in their own aesthetical sense, arousing anirresolute debate on the definition of a culprit: Who makes the other dirty? Moreover, who beautifies whom?

Thecombination and interplay of these constituents allow the artist to play withthe somber, the imprecise and the fleeting, where observing the art pieces doesnot only result in an aesthetical activity that pursues delight, but anactivity that is at the same time intellectual as well as sensitive. At theend, Corrosion examines how fears andillusions, delirium, utopias and fantasies become at some point ornamental, andat some other point a reflection of the unequivocal and cruel reality.

Kurt Schwitters’ profound impact on art history is rarely given just recognition. A pioneering artist in the spheres of collage, sculpture, architecture and installation, Schwitters was an innovator; he set the tone for the avant-garde. At a young age in war torn Germany, Schwitters stylistically evolved through genres such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, and European Avant-garde to ultimately generate his signature modus operandi, Merz. Designed as a distinctly Schwitters architectural assemblage, his transformative installation known as Merzbau is recognized today as one of the most riveting artworks of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the Merzbau was bombed and destroyed in 1943 during WWII. Kurt Schwitters’ vast artistic impact nevertheless continues to have an influence on artists and developing movements as his multifaceted legacy lives on.

Held over due to popular demand, Fredric Snitzer Gallery will modestly aim to pay homage to the late Kurt Schwitters in their summer group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition Fredric Snitzer Gallery will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Jessica Laino and Jose Bedia. Kurt Schwitters’ comprehensive influence on art history resonates with each of these artists uniquely. While each of the participating artists has a distinctive style of their own that has surely evolved since the early 20th century, cohesively their collages, sculptures, photographs, and installations are intertwined with the multidimensional artistic relationships that Kurt Schwitters himself explored.

Miguel Paredes Unveils Superhero During July Wynwood Art Walk 7/9/11

Saturday, July 9th from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Second Saturday Art Walk.
Miguel Paredes Fine Art Gallery
173 NW 23rd Street
Miami, FL 33127.
Those interested in attending should confirm their RSVP by emailing RSVP@miguelparedes.com.

Miami-based pop and multimedia artist, sculptor and urban realist Miguel Paredes will unveil his newest piece of artwork, Superhero, at his Wynwood gallery.

“I’ve been a comic book collector almost my entire life,” says Paredes. “As a child, I often fantasized about having special powers, and those memories were a source of inspiration when creating Superhero. True to the Los Niños collection, my children were also involved in the creative process, and this eventually led me to paint my own interpretation of a superhero.”

Superhero is a hand-painted oil on canvas piece measuring 48 inches by 60 inches. The foreground features a child who is elevating by using his superpowers and winged feet, while the background showcases the artist’s personal comic book collection organized on a wooden bookshelf. A silver clock located on the upper-right-hand side of the bookshelf reads “4:20” and is a reference to the artist’s successful printing company, PK Graphics, located at 420 Lincoln Road in South Beach. Paredes’ Birds, which are a recurring image in his works, are also featured and serve as the child’s loyal, brave guardians. Superhero will be the last addition to the artist’s well-known Los Niños collection.

At the premiere, guests will enjoy refreshing nitro ice cream treats (liquid nitrogen ice cream with premium fruity and nutty mix-ins), compliments of HaVen Gastro-Lounge. In addition, complimentary Zignum Mezcal signature cocktails will be available, along with beer from the Heineken Light art bar, a selection of Rex Goliath wines and sparkling water courtesy of Perrier. Local DJ Ari X will provide the tunes for the evening. PK Graphics is also a sponsor and supporter of the event.

Photographs of Sketchy Miami at Lester’s 6/30/11

Sketchy Miami i at Lester’s on Thursday, June 30, 2011.  What a great idea!!!  Sketchy Miami was created by the people behind Beached Miami, a blog dedicated to documenting all of Miami’s many cultural offerings no matter how obscure

The goal of Sketchy Miami is simple and impossible: to create a portrait of every person in Miami. Here’s how it works: 1) Miami residents submit photographs of themselves. 2) Local artists — i.e., all locals who consider themselves artists — create portraits (aka “Sketchys”) based on the photographs and then submit them through sketchymiami.com.  3) The finished Sketchys appear on the homepage with a link to their photographs and to the artist’s personal page.

Guti Live Summer Tour at Electric Pickle and Debut Album Patio De Juegos 7/8/11

Argentinean-born Guti embarks on an exciting tour featuring his acclaimed live performance, following the release of his inaugural album teeming with echoingly hypnotic jazz-infused house music. This unique live performer effortlessly presents a collection of beautifully constructed productions that demonstrate the convergence and symbiotic nature of his vast musical past, and present.

Classically-trained jazz virtuoso and national rock ‘n’ roll hero in his native Argentina, Guti is no stranger to music. A musical education that takes in Argentinean folk, blues, rock and jazz, Guti is currently enjoying a new chapter in his musical adventure within electronica. From the moment his track “Salsón” with Damian Schwarz on Frankfurt label Raum…Musik was licensed by Loco Dice for his compilation ‘The Lab’, it was obvious Guti’s decision to explore house music was a positive step.

With his productions now being a regular feature in the record bags of DJs as diverse as Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Marco Carola, and Carl Cox, it is apparent Guti is enjoying a watershed moment in his long adventure.

‘Patio de Juegos’, which translates as ‘playground,’ is a wonderful multi-genre journey through the mind of an artist who is both on top of his game, and on the rise towards the stars. Lashings of his ever-present South American heritage infuse with incredibly intricate and perfectly simple house structures that give the whole album it’s almost ‘child at play’ ethos that is rarely found in electronic music.

Current club hits such as “Wanna Be”, with its nod to the historical upbeat lineage of house music, and “All the Girls”, with its chugging rhythm, trickling piano loops and erotic vocals sit effortlessly alongside more experimental and jazz inspired tracks such as the explorative “Still Here”. Another fine example is “Sun”, with its deep bass line punctuated with the sun-soaked synths and summer high-hats that export listeners away to a warm utopia.

Guti produces a number of tracks with high profile artists from both within and outside the DJ fraternity – a sign of his increasing popularity within electronica, and also his innate ability to collaborate with more mainstream artists. This has resulted in Guti pushing his productions in new and exciting directions.

Israeli techno producer Guy Gerber features on “We Shall Overcome”, with it’s rising synths complemented by a chunky beat that will ensure it features in many sets over the coming months. Visionquest’s Ryan Crosson lends a hand on “No Promises” which has resulted in a truly driving dancefloor groove. And “My Whole Thing” features Anthea Marie Nzekwu whose uplifting vocals accompany a dreamy chilled out beat. Berklee College of Music graduate, and Guti’s long-time friend, Grünbox features on “Miraloo” – an example of Guti’s ability to collaborate with the worlds musical elite.

Notably, and perhaps the biggest coup, is that of Daniel Melingo who features on “Lucio El Anarquista”. The Grammy nominated tango singer and world–renowned musician is well known for his composition work on Pedro Almodóvar’s films, and he brings a rich musical education to a truly sublime track.

Overall Guti gives up a beautiful mixture of tracks that bridge the space between the club and the living room with consummate ease. A breathtaking first album which clearly demarcates the live performer’s ability and ambition for the coming years.

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Ashley Ford Metrouroboros Reception 7/9/11

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Ashley Ford: Metrouroboros
Opening Reception For The Artist
Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 6pm.
UM’s Wynwood Project Space
2200A NW 2nd Avenue

Metrouroboros by Ashley Ford will be on view from July 9 – 29, 2011
UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Ashley Ford on view beginning July 9, 2011. Metrouroboros is the examination of the contemporary non-place. The term, “non-place” as coined by French anthropologist Marc Augé, indicates a kind of place that has a sense of liminality. These are spaces that are common to our everyday lives, that we pass through with frequency yet don’t hold enough significance to be regarded as places – highways, public restrooms, airports. Metrouroboros examines the psychological and sociological impact of these places and the interactions we have within them.

Ashley Ford has been exhibiting work in print, photography, drawing and bookbinding since 2001. She received her B.F.A with Honors in Studio Art as well as a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Because of this combination of interests, her work often has heavy psychological and anthropological themes. She has proudly exhibited her prints and books across the country and has been collected by the Miami Dade Public Library System as well as The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, The University of Alabama Libraries.

A full schedule of exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art.

Primary Flight and Andrew Nigon An Official State 6/11/11

Local Emerging Artist Andrew Nigon Exhibits Powerful Sculptures
Saturday, June 11 at 7:00 p.m
Primary Projects
Atrium Building
4141 NE Second Avenue, Suite 104
Miami Design District

An Official State Opens during Second Saturday Art Walk in Design District

Primary Flight (“PF”) is honored to present An Official State, the monumental sculptures of Miami-based artist Andrew Nigon. As if caught in a moment of euphoric overdose, his work explodes with bright colors, discarded luxury items, and objects bent on fulfilling a life cycle they will never experience.

An Official State marks a modest 5th exhibition milestone since the space launched during last year’s Basel. This show will run through August 2011.

“My work reflects the bizarre nature of our existence, in which we have an insatiable drive to improve while simultaneously living within bodies that are in constant decay”, said Nigon. “The result being seductive and tortured characters that exist halfway between somewhere and nowhere.”

An Official State is curated by Books IIII Bischof, Typoe and Chris Oh. Free and open to the public, complimentary beverages at the reception will be provided by Bacardi Rum and Perrier. For more information please contact info@primaryflight.com or visit www.primaryflight.com.

Primary Flight is a collaborative curatorial organization dedicated to the production of site-specific, street level and indoor, murals and installations. Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has brought together more than 150 of the world’s most influential artists to install their bodies of work live in the streets of Wynwood, the Design District and greater Miami-Dade. Launching Primary Projects at 4141 NE Second Avenue, Suite 104 in December 2010, Primary Flight uses its 4,000-square-foot space as an art lab, giving professional established and emerging artists the opportunity to redefine the context in which their work is experienced. Dorsch Gallery presents Noise Field a multi-media group exhibition 6/10/11

Please join us for the opening reception of Noise Field
Friday June 10th, 6-9pm,
Dorsch Gallery

celebrating the group show, Noise Field.
The exhibition will run from June 10 – July 9, 2011.

There will be a live musical performance by R.A.F. (Raphael Amadeus Frankenstein) at 8 pm.

The gallery will also be open noon-9 pm on Saturday, June 11, for the Wynwood Second Saturday art-walk.

Artists:
Raphael Lyon
Ruben Millares
Martin Murphy
Kylin O’Brien
Odalis Valdivieso
Sam Winston
Antonia Wright

Curated by Annie Hollingsworth

Noise Field examines the field of consciousness where language patters begin to form of where, conversely, they dissolve into nonsense. In this in-between place, language has an unsettling vertigo effect. Dreamlike logic rules and nightmare characters are born.

Noise Field looks at written, spoken, and non-verbal languages. Throughout the exhibition, words fall apart and images get caught between old and new media. Technology is cast as a set of questionable tools and produce chaotic excess in combination with incomplete information – a psychologically murky terrain that can produce as much anxiety as the dark space under the bed.

I Was There photoshow curated by Salustiano opening 6/11/11

“I was there,” Four Seville-based Photographers to Exhibit in Miami
7:00PM Saturday, June 11th,
during Wynwood Arts Walk.
Kavachnina Contemporary
46 NW 36th Street
Miami Fl, 33127

Jesus Manuel Rojas Torres
Exhibition runs through August 10, 2011.

I Was There,” is a photographic exhibition by four Spanish artists who will bring to Kavachnina Contemporary this coming Saturday June 11th, 2011, a personal analysis and interpretation of the human perception during Wynwood Arts Walk.
The photographers, David Palacin, Pepe Moran, Rafaela Rodriguez and Estela Garcia were selected by Salustiano, the curator for this photo exhibition.

Salustiano, an established Spanish artist known widely by his portraits painted in a technically perfect red which look more like velvet than a canvas, is a master that shows his subjects in enigmatic acts of looking.

“Human beings have left a trace both, in the landscapes as being themselves, and with their fingerprints throughout time, which have been recorded in our memories or even as a witness of our living experiences and hence the title for this exhibition,” said Salustiano.

“Initially, the idea was to do a photo exhibit on portraiture but then to widen the possibilities for artists when making their proposals, I suggested instead to work on the human being itself, on its figure, its presence and its absence throughout time,” added Salustiano.

Homeless Women To Be Treated To Day of Beauty and Glamour 6/10/11

PricewaterhouseCoopers to host a day of beauty for the homeless women of the Miami Rescue Mission
Friday, June 10th beginning at 1:00 PM.
Miami Rescue Mission’s Center for Women & Children
2250 NW 1st Avenue
Miami, FL 33127

Several volunteers from the Fortune 100 Company PricewaterhouseCoopers will be volunteering at the Miami Rescue Mission’s Center for Women & Children. During their time, volunteers will be helping with makeovers as well as dropping off donations to the homeless women and children who currently reside at the Center.

PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Miami Rescue Mission are teaming up to help the self-esteem of those women who may need it the most, those in the homeless population.

In a statement, PricewaterhouseCoopers reiterated the importance of volunteer activities such as this, “We (PricewaterhouseCoopers) are hosting a Day of Beauty for women who may never get to beautify themselves in the near future simply because they do not know how, do not have the self-esteem to believe they can be beautiful or do not have the resources to do so. Our mission is to show the women that we all care about them and to help them realize that they are not defined by their circumstances.”

Community Development Associate of the Miami Rescue Mission, Melissa Singh added, “It is always wonderful to see the look on the faces of our women and children when a group like this comes in. To see the light in their eyes from feeling good about themselves is something everyone should see… We are so thankful to PricewaterhouseCoopers for their generosity!”

First One Night Stand Exhibition Series War by Children by student PJ Lazo 6/11/11

First “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”: War by Children by student PJ Lazo
The Lunch Box Gallery
June 11, 2011, from 5-10pm
310 NW 24th St, Miami, Fl 33127
www.thelunchboxgallery.com

The exhibition “War by Children” by Miami International University of Art & Design student PJ Lazo inaugurates the first show of the “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”, a new project from The Lunch Box Gallery (Miami, FL) which aims to give photography students the opportunity to participate in the popular Wynwood Gallery Walks, facilitating them the exposure of their work during this major art event.

Understanding how difficult can be sometimes for current students to showcase their photography in galleries or in any other art institutions besides their undergraduate or graduate schools, “One Night Stand” emerges from the idea of encouraging and enabling the students in Florida that “first step” into the Miami art scene.

After a call for entries and a final selection, a student is chosen every month to exhibit his/her photographs in the exterior wall of The Lunch Box Gallery for the day of the Wynwood Art Walk (second Saturday of every month). This occasion is intended to give the student access to meeting new people, gaining experience in the process of exhibiting and bringing to the eye of the public new talents worth seeing in the realm of contemporary photography. The exhibition series is also oriented to help students by the gallery not retaining any commissions in the event of a sale.

P.J. Lazo is a 25 years old photography student from the Miami International University of Art & Design, born in Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida. He was one of the first students to apply to the first “One Night Stand Exhibition Series”, submitting a fascinating work named War by Children. For Lazo, almost everything becomes a game through the eyes of a child. Children experience the world with an untethered perception. An imagination without budget or the shackles of social restrictions, therefore transforming any conventional concept into an infinite play land where anything is possible. These can be controversial subjects like “war” for example: man slaying man in a perpetual struggle; one of our species greatest downfalls and certainly not a topic for games. However, according to the student, a child interprets this concept with an empty mind, oblivious to the horror of reality. To him, it is just a concept; a setting in which to play in. War by Children is Lazo’s subjective interpretation of what that play world would look like.

To apply for upcoming “One Night Stand” exhibitions, students are required to send their photographs, CVs and artist statements to submission@thelunchboxgallery.com.

Celebration of Life & Art: A Tribute to Jim Hunter
June 11; 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
NWSA ArtSeen Gallery
2215 NW 2nd Avenue, Wynwood

Heartfelt Farewell To Jim Hunter
New World School of the Arts is in mourning after the loss of one of its founding visual arts teachers. Jim Hunter – loved by his students, respected by his peers, and recognized by the arts community for his commitment to arts education – passed away just a couple of weeks ago after a brief battle with lung cancer. Jim is survived by his wife, Lilia Garcia, also an artist, educator, arts advocate and former member of New World School of the Arts’ Executive Board.

“Working hand-in-hand with Jim Hunter for the past ten years and interacting with him, both as a colleague and as an artist, helped me to realize that he truly loved working with students” explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. “He would come to my office at the end of the day and we would talk, brainstorm, and plan ways to make the high school program even better. He often brought with him the list of all the awards and scholarships the students received…like a father with his child going off to college. Jim’s passion for the arts and commitment to his students made him an exceptional educator and unequaled mentor.”

Jeffrey Hodgson, Interim Provost at NWSA also comments “New World School of the Arts has built a legacy of excellence since its first classes started 25 years ago, and like so many other dedicated professionals, Jim Hunter was there, steering young talent towards greatness from the beginning. We are thankful that Jim’s legacy continues on in the school, in our alumni and students, but his presence will be deeply missed.”

A celebration of Jim’s life has been organized to bid one last farewell to this irreplaceable artist, friend, colleague, and mentor.

First Annual Wynwood Art Fair
Featuring Performing Artists Benefiting the Lotus House Women’s Shelter

From October 21 to 23, Miami-Wynwood, is launching the first annual Wynwood Art Fair, a groundbreaking, collaborative, performance-based, interactive, contemporary art fair involving virtually every major contemporary art institution and works of internationally acclaimed artists from Miami and across the country.

This extraordinary three-day celebration and exploration of contemporary art is more than just good fun, it’s also for a good cause. All admission proceeds benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, providing shelter, sanctuary and support to women and children in need.

More than a fair, the Wynwood Art Fair will be a dazzling three-day, contemporary art “happening” of unprecedented artistic dimension as artists from Miami and across the country explore virtually every form of artistic medium, creating spontaneous works of art “live” with fair participants. Fun, thought-provoking, educational and interactive, the Wynwood Art Fair goes beyond traditional notions of contemporary art fairs, inviting fairgoers of all ages to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, think and above all, make art!

At the Wynwood Art Fair, fair-goers will have an opportunity to not only meet the artists, but in many cases, work along side them and be a part of the creative process unfolding. Veteran and nationally renowned artists, such as Trajal Harrell, David Brooks, Sarah Sze, Ellen Fisher, Ben Fain, Frank Van Duerm, Marc Grubstein, Steve Johnson, Minsky Sisters, Jerry Misrach and Marinov Dancers will be flying in for the three days of street festivities to perform, play and collaborate in the making of art with local Miami favorites Primary Flight, Alouishous San Gomma, Sleeper, Calotta Pradera and Clifton Childree, among many others. Their mutual goal – to surprise, engage, delight and interact with fair goers – all the while raising awareness of Lotus House and its important work on behalf of women and children in need. The streets and street art of the Wynwood Art District will offer a unique and fitting backdrop to the artistic talent of this cutting edge street fair.

As the premier sponsor, Hadley Martin Fisher said: “I am honored to support Lotus House as a sponsor of the Wynwood Art fair. I am equally delighted to join forces with a number of Miami’s best art institutions and the Miami art community, and share a portion of my art collection with the general public. There is nothing more rewarding and inspiring than uniting for the good of others. I commend Lotus House for the remarkable work they are doing for women in need and for the Miami community at large.”

The Lotus House is deeply grateful to all of the artists, art institutions, sponsors and the City of Miami for being so courageous in their commitment of creative talent and resources to this extraordinary collaborative initiative to make a difference. MERZBAU-NOW Exhibition at Fredric Snitzer Gallery Opening Reception 6/10/11

M E R Z B A U – N O W Opening Reception
Friday June 10, 2011 7:30 – 10 pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery
2247 NW 1st Place

June 10 – July 11, 2011

This June at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, we modestly aim to pay homage to Kurt Schwitters in our group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition we will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Yasue Maetake and Jose Bedia.

Have-Nots Comedy and Villa 221 present a unique comedy show featuring some of South Florida’s best talent.
No cover
2-item minimum

Headliner: Forrest Shaw
Born in Miami and raised as an only child by a single hippie mother, Forrest Shaw got into stand-up comedy after a decade of life as a marine biologist. Saving manatees and counting seagrass by day, at night, Forrest dedicated himself to comedy, quickly working his way into regular club work. The influence of his former life as a biologist is evident in his material. Forrest delivers witty and clever anecdotes of his unorthodox with a wry smile. He shares his own faults and failures with the audience in hopes that they too can find the lighter side of those things in life, which sometimes seem too much to bear. He also isn’t fond of stupid people; but who is? Life is complicated and it shouldn’t be. We have created all of this stress and aggravation so the healthiest thing to do is make fun of ourselves and laugh about it.

Featuring the hilarious Wendi Starling and Richy Lala

Opening Mayami Son Machin 5/20/11

Opening Reception, Friday May 20th 7 – 10 PM
Mayami Son Machín< 174 NW 23 Street Miami, Florida 33127/p>

A project on Latin America, music, and gender
by Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City
The exhibition will remain on view thru July 23rd, 2011

Works by:
Abner Benaim, Bhakti Baxter, Juan Brenner, Buró de Intervenciones Públicas (BIP), Alfredo Ceibal, DETEXT, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Radamés “Juni” Figueroa, Hulda Guzmán, Jonathan Harker, Rita Indiana & Los Misterios + Noelia Quintero, Byron Mármol, Sofia Novella, Yoshua Okón, Fabi Pina, Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa, Carla Verea/Estudio Lake Verea in collaboration with Silverio, Carlos Woods

Mayami Son Machín is an exhibition which aims to explore common preconceptions about Latin American identity as seen through a fantasized place called Mayami, a city cloaked in a mystic haze of glory and glamour. The title of the exhibition is derived from The Miami Sound Machine, a 90’s era music group, which epitomized the notion of what it means to be latino living in Miami.

Maymi Son Machín departs from three principal notions;
1. “Mayami” as a referent and final destination of Latin American aspirations; both in terms of those who experience it via forced migration (economic, political, etc.) and those individuals for whom Miami becomes a Mecca of shopping and glamour.

2. “El Son” referencing the intrinsic rhythm of certain Latin American countries, music in general as the identifying characteristic of Latino cultures, along with the dances formed alongside these rhythms and their relationship to a sexual identity as characterized by a Latin American exoticism.

3. “Machîn” derived from “macho” which encompasses those works that construct and destroy the idea of the Latin American male, both in terms of an overly inflated notion of masculinity, alongside a stereotypical and caricature-like notion of female identity.

This exhibition was organized by Proyectos Ultravioleta, an artist run exhibition space located in downtown Guatemala City. The organizers were introduced to the gallery via New Methods, a symposium presented at The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, organized by Ruba Katrib.

neither here nor there by Audrey Hynes will be on view from June 10 – 26, 2011
UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Audrey Hynes on view beginning June 10, 2011. neither here nor there aims to evoke the familiar and the fantastical through non-site objects, on-site installation, site-specific installation, sculpture, video, sound and photography as documentation.

The basis of her work is conceptual, in an effort to rethink and recontextualize our perception of reality. The artist has said that the project specifically explores issues of material and location, by investigating an invasive species, the melaleuca tree, that has altered the physical terrain of the Everglades and South Florida. The exploration and manipulation of the materials becomes the process of each project, where the artwork is about process and time rather than static and enduring. The projects are relative to time and place within the site, they are temporary arrangements that are subject to change and become more of a sequence and narrative with each rearrangement, they are ephemeral like the material. The environmental, political and social conditions of the site are discovered through an exploration of location, material, process, and production.

Her projects are invented realities presented as fact that employ a pseudoscientific approach by using a variety of materials each with a corresponding process that becomes a major component for the overall inspiration and communication of the project. The actualization of the work occurs in two ways: either the artist begins with a solid idea and employs materials to certain ends, or my methodology begins as experimentation and leads to new discoveries and objects. This practice helps ensure an intuitive creative reaction that directly feeds her concept allowing an openness to new discoveries and provides fodder for developing dynamic, layered, stories. Her investigations frequent the topics of temporality, space, and time, and she is interested in the role that imagination plays in forming and reforming these physical properties of experience.

Her work is partially autobiographical and she attempts to detach herself from it to place it in a larger context with the intention of expressing a variety of feelings evident through human behavior. Each sculpture, photograph and installation relates to a theory where a subjective experience is in relation to a phenomena. The directedness that each project attempts to embody is an experience that is worldly, and inviting interaction and thought. By portraying her work as documentation of an actual experience, she attempts to evoke a sense of empathy with the object.

Hynes was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently lives and works in Miami. She obtained her BFA from University of New Mexico in Studio Arts and a Post Baccaulaurette Certificate in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Art Walk in Wynwood, a great experience for art lovers By Betty Alvarez

I have always enjoyed artwalk in the Design District and that is where I usually go when I am in the area. However, I realized that I have not been to a Wynwood Art Walk for as long as I can remember. Therefore, as the date of the Wynwood Art Walk was approaching and two great events were happening in that area, I just had to try it out. This was the beginning of many firsts for me.

To begin, two of the galleries were opening at 5 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m., that gave me more time to scout the area. I parked near a parking lot which was the meeting place of the all-famous food trucks: Ms. Cheezious, The Mexican Gourmet, Daddy’s Grill, Che Grill, Red Koi, Sakaya Kitchen, and many more. It was a food truck lover’s delight. I have heard of the food trucks but never experience eating from one. I tried the pork croquettes from Sakaya kitchen and the Beef soft tacos from The Mexican Gourmet. YUM! It was hot right out of the oven and fresh. You just want to eat it right away. It was a great first time experience. I never knew that the area also had mobile bars and benches which art goers can enjoy their delectable meals. Although I understand that the food trucks have to work in an area where it is feasible for them but I would have liked that the parking lot to be more pedestrian friendly as the ground was not all smooth for walking. I had to walk in the midst of rocks and debris. Apart from that, a very good experience that I want to come back.

One of the first galleries I visited was Miguel Paredes Gallery. This contemporary artist is very gifted in his work. Very modernistic and every artwork is unique in its own way. I never seen anything like it. On this occasion, beverages was sponsored by Chivas and appetizers were from D. Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean. Chivas had two unique drinks: Chivas Smash and Punch. Although both were good, I personally loved the punch topped with an edible flower. Chef Douglas Rodriguez created some scrumptious appetizers such as small Marlin tacos, Tuna Tartar, Chicken Skewers, and the ever popular beef on a stick (it looked liked warm beef popsicle). I so wanted to try the “beef popsicle” but I had to go. That will be my appetizer when I go to the restaurant in the near future.

Gallery 212 was the destination of the launch of the art bus connecting Wynwood and Design District. Mayor Tomas Regalado was the guest of honor in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Art Bus is a school bus that will take art lovers from Wynwood to Design District without the hassle of going to their cars and going to design district. This is convenient. As I waited for the Mayor and ceremony to begin, I strolled inside the gallery. There were many great works in many mediums but one type of artistic work that caught my eye was Michael Perez’s hand painted wine glasses. These one of a kind wine glasses are the type to have in a girls night. Although the artist told me that the wine glasses were not for drinking use due to the delicate artwork, he will be making wine glasses in a medium that people can drink from them while enjoying the wonderful artwork in them. I truly loved it.

Across the street, Harold Golen Gallery was holding an opening for the launch of Bunny Yeager’s book, Bouffant Beauties which featured her famous photographs of yesteryear’s beauties and centerfolds. As I skimmed through the book, she was incredibly a great photographer especially during the golden epoch era were there were many taboos especially for women.

As the night was heading to a close, I stopped by Cafeina for Miami Magazine’s/One Sotheby Tweet UP event. As this event was winding down, I went in to the gallery where it was suggested to go as there was a new installation. The works were wonderful as it reminded me of Bunny Yeager’s photographic book. As I went outside, the DJ was playing music from the 70’s but as I turned around to face the gallery, I noticed that the video was playing in sync with the music. What a flashback! As I stayed for 30 minutes, music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s played with the video. Definitely a blast from the past.

I visited other galleries in the area earlier that night and every gallery had a story of its own. I never knew how popular Wynwood has become over the years. There were so many people that I could barely walk on the sidewalk. Also, I went back to the food truck area and it was very crowded. People just love Wynwood for its modernistic, independent, futuristic artworks. Being different is to me the overall message that Wynwood wants to disseminate. Saturday, May 14 was a first experience that I want to relive over and over again. Kudos Wynwood as I will be coming back!!

Whale and Star Lecture Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism 5/18/11

Whale & Star Lecture Project. Lecture 7: Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism: A Contested History by Michael R. Taylor
Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 7:00 p.m.
Whale & Star
2215 NW 1st Place
Miami, Florida 33127
www.whaleandstar.com

Admission: $5 Lecture Fee / Limited seating
RSVP: 305.576.6160

This lecture will explore Arshile Gorky’s complex and often misunderstood relationship with the Abstract Expressionist movement. The initial reception of Gorky’s work after his death in 1948 paved the way for his gradual assimilation into the canon of Abstract Expressionism as it was formed in the 1950s by, among others, Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, Thomas Hess, Sam Hunter, and Dore Ashton. Gorky’s work was acclaimed by these critics and art historians as an important precursor to the large-scale abstract paintings of his friends and colleagues, such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Although universally accepted at the time, this reading of Gorky’s work has been contested in recent years, since it deliberately downplays the artist’s longstanding allegiance to Surrealism during his lifetime, leading to a fundamental misreading of his work and its meaning.

Michael R. Taylor is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His most recent exhibitions at the Museum include Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris (2010); Marcel Duchamp: Etant donn’s (2009); Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective (2009); Salvador Dali: The Centennial Retrospective (2005); and Giorgio de Chirico and the Myth of Ariadne (2002). Dr. Taylor studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he wrote a masters thesis on Richard Hamilton and a doctoral dissertation on Marcel Duchamp’s readymades. He has published widely on Duchamp, Dada, and Surrealism. In 2009 he co-curated with Carlos Basualdo the Bruce Nauman exhibition at the American Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Biennale (winner of the Golden Lion award for best national pavilion). Future projects include an exhibition on Surrealism in the 1940s that focuses on myth, magic, and eroticism. In 2010 Dr. Taylor’s book Marcel Duchamp: Etan t donnis won the George Wittenborn Prize for outstanding research and scholarship in the field of art history.

Arrived gathers 18 photographs intervened with digitalillustrations (mixed media) by Venezuelan artist, painter and illustrator M-Lon(Miguel Gonzalez), who combines photography with the use of a WACOM digitalpen, thus giving life to images that equally share the participation of bothreality and fantasy.

This series is born bythe need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit ofimaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenesof urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, butnevertheless where they try to find their own space.

By penetrating into anunknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocentfrolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothingmore than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them intopersonifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity;emotions we can somehow relate to.

These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious butalways naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation todiscover, imagine and reconsider the world that surrounds us.

Arrived reflects on the M-Lon’s idea that when we trulycome close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise momentwhen we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.
