Miami Foundation 2015 Public Space Challenge Launch Event at Ball & Chain on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

About 2015 Public Space Challenge:  “The annual contest will again seek ideas to connect Miami-Dade residents by creating, improving and activating public gathering places like parks, libraries, plazas, community gardens and playgrounds.  Anyone – individuals, groups, agencies, nonprofits or companies – can submit ideas at ourmiami.org/challenge through the April 1stsubmission deadline.  We encourage the community to weigh in on the ideas by liking, sharing and commenting on them.  The Challenge offers a way for everyone to help advance the cause by putting solutions in the hands of residents who have a passion for this place; your voice and input is critical for this platform to work.”

“In an effort to invest in bigger ideas, mobilize more people and see greater results, The Miami Foundation and our partners have upped the total prize amount to a fitting $305,000.  Our Challenge sponsors Health Foundation of South Florida, who is entering their third year of supporting the contest, and Baptist Health South Florida, who is partnering with us for the first time, have each committed funds to the total. Because of their generosity, the Challenge will support ideas encouraging healthy lifestyles and exercise activities in the community.  We are privileged to help advance their work of building a stronger, more energetic Miami.”

Miami Boheme nights, now scheduled every Friday is inspired by the documentary film written and directed by Joe Cardona. Joe, who will be hosting the event tomorrow is a documentary filmmaker and a writer for the Miami Herald. He coined the term ” miami boheme” to describe a genre of music he saw developing in Miami. Below, is a brief summary of the film:

Miami Boheme: An American Musical Journey is an hour-long PBS documentary about Miami’s original Latin-fusion bands and the cutting-edge scene surrounding them. The film takes viewers to clubs where the beats of bands such as Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Suénalo, PALO!, Elastic Bond, and Afrobeta getthe room dancing. The film is a bilingual mash up of rhythms and cultures. It is a one-hour jam session like no other: a fusion of sights, sounds, and ideas that meld together to form the fabric of America’s most dynamic city, Miami.

As part of the The Miami Boheme nights, Joe will host each night by engaging in dialogue with the performers, and by providing commentary to the audience. Joe will also be introducing new bands that have never been previously classified as “miami boheme” into the mix.

PRESS RELEASE
It’s A Wrap! Miami International Film Festival’s MIFFecito, A Program Of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture,
Ends With Sold Out Screenings, Incredible Performances and Pomp

4-Day Mini Festival Run Gave Miami A Taste Of MiamiFF 2015’s Caliber Of Incredible International Programming

Opening Night Began With Director Ernesto Daranas’ Smash Hit BEHAVIOR (CONDUCTA), Continued In Spectacular Fashion at Neo-Cuban Hotspot Ball & Chain

Master Class Discussions On The Art Of Film Curation, Plus Impact of Film On Anti-Bullying Efforts, Got Audiences Thinking

MIAMI, FL – Local film lovers packed Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater this past weekend for the joyous new MIFFecito, the mid-season cinematic appetizer to 2015’s 32nd Miami International Film Festival’s (MiamiFF’s) main course taking place March 6-15, 2015. Festival organizers proclaimed the 4-day special prelude event to be successful beyond their expectations, with nonstop sold-out film screenings, exuberant visiting artists, and snazzy après-screening soirees. All MIFFecito screenings at the Tower Theater were generously presented by Viendomovies.

A jubilant MiamiFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante said, “Judging by the smile count, this autumnal run of MIFFecito was a programming initiative that truly paid off. It affirmed that the opportunity to deeply immerse one’s self in a rich, meaningful selection of superb new international cinema that is as yet undistributed in this country is profoundly desired. We’re thrilled and filled with anticipation for March!”

MIFFecito opened on Thursday, October 16th with Ernesto Daranas, the director of the sold out Opening Night film Behavior (Conducta), actor Hector Noas and the film’s art director Erick Grass, arriving for the film’s much anticipated red carpet premiere. Audiences had the pleasure of indulging in Latin treats from Tinta y Café’s pop-up café decorated with Las Tias furnishings in place just for MIFFecito. An electric question and answer session with the artists concluded the emotional Florida premiere of Behavior, and the festivities continued across the street at just-opened Ball & Chain, Little Havana’s retro, neo-Cuban hotspot which hosted MIFFecito’s Opening Night Party. Guests celebrated the electric night of live afro-Cuban sounds, gourmet Cuban tapas, and flowing libations from sponsors Bombay Sapphire and Stella Artois.

Friday night, MIFFecito kicked into full premiere gear, showcasing international hits by directors including Paco León with the North American premiere of Carmina and Amen (Spain),Matías Rojas Valencia withRoot (Chile),and director Sydney Sibilia’s I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Italy). Each filled-to-capacity premiere screened to laughing or deeply moved audiences.

Saturday afternoon, the festival changed gears to present an outstanding educational opportunity for the special master class The Art of Curation, presented by MiamiFF’s programming guru Thom Powers. Powers walked fascinated attendees through a process of engagement with audiences that goes far beyond simply choosing which movies to show. An intense discussion of connecting documentary cinema (Powers’ specialty) and audiences was opened up with the entire audience participating, with special discussion of Laura Poitras’ upcoming Citizenfour film used as a prime case study.

Saturday night, the evening crowds continued and the glamour unleashed, with cameras flashing as Mariana Chenillo, the director of Paradise (Mexico), and Roberto Sanchez, the lead actor of Lake Los Angeles (USA), appeared for the Florida premieres of their respective films. Also premiering that evening was Vara: A Blessing, directed by Bhutanese lama Khyentse Norbu, where guests were pleasantly surprised with an enchanting Bollywood dance team performance by Belly Motions.

Sunday afternoon, Moisés Kaufman, the celebrated director of The Laramie Project, was in attendance along with special guest moderator Dennis Scholl, Vice President of Arts for The Knight Foundation, for a very special retrospective screening of Kaufman’s groundbreaking film. Afterwards, an impassioned conversation ensued regarding the positive impact the film (and the original theater production) have had over the years since its 2002 debut. Kaufman took the opportunity to announce that, 23 years after forming his internationally celebrated Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, he will be forming a new Miami-based theater company with partners Gary Ressler and Michel Hausmann, in 2015.

The festival closed Sunday night with the East Coast U.S. premiere screening of director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s massive smash Spanish Affair (Ocho apellidos vascos), the all-time highest-grossing domestic film at the Spanish box office. Spanish Affair screened three times throughout MIFFecito, and every screening was sold out.

Behavior (Conducta) (Cuba), directed by Ernesto Daranas. FLORIDA PREMIERE. *OPENING NIGHT FILM – FOLLOWED BY OPENING NIGHT PARTY AT THE SOON-TO-BE-OPENED “BALL & CHAIN” NIGHTCLUB. In director Ernesto Daranas’ second dramatic feature film, which will screen opening night at MIFFecito, a Havana boy sent to a reform school becomes the subject of a moral tug-of-war between generational ideologies in today’s Cuba. The complex, dramatic story centers on Chala, who on the critical cusp of adolescence, scrapes by with few positive role models as he illegally trains fight dogs. After Chala is sent to reform school, his addict mother’s attempts to have him released set up a chain reaction among the school leaders. Since its premiere in Cuba, the film became an unexpected social phenomenon sparking Cuba’s current social state as a hot topic for discussion.

“The Blue Car” (“El carro azul”) (Germany / Cuba), directed by Valerie Heine. FLORIDA PREMIERE. A short dramatic film about Marcos. His grandmother’s death forces Hansel, his worldly brother, to return Cuba to care for him, and an old family game helps restore the trust lost over the years.

Carmina and Amen (Carmina y amén) (Spain), directed by Paco León. NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE. Actor-cum-director Paco León is a familiar face to Miami art film lovers. He starred in the 2013 film Three Many Weddings which played at MiamiFF31. But the year prior, he created a charming showcase for the incredible force, charisma and outrageous personality of his actress-mother Carmina Barrios’ in Carmina or Blow-Up, which became an unexpected hit both in Spain and Miami. In this 2014 sequel, Carmina and Amen, Carmina triumphantly returns, upgrading the low-budget original with a deeper, more mature work that ups the ante on her larger-than-life outlook on family, sex, death and any other topic that falls into her purview.

I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto quando voglio) (Italy), directed by Sydney Sibilia. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Full of terrific, farcical comedy and wicked social commentary, I Can Quit Whenever I Want is director Sydney Sibilia’s vehicle to offer Italians the chance to chuckle at the gloomy 43% unemployment rate for Italy’s youth. Realizing their post-graduate degrees are worthless, a rag-tag crew of desperate intellectuals imagine a new psychotropic drug, and then apply their refined but completely unmarketable skills to the illicit drug trade, much to the chagrin of the local Mafia. This film was nominated for 12 Donatello Awards, the Academy Awards of Italy.

Lake Los Angeles (U.S.A.), directed by Mike Ott. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Francisco, played by Miami’s own Roberto Sanchez, is a middle-aged Cuban man who works odd construction jobs, and makes money on the side by providing his home as a holding house for illegal Mexican immigrants. Cecilia, a 10-year-old Mexican girl, crosses the border hoping to find a better life in the US, but her treacherous journey into the Promised Land will test her spiritual and physical fortitude. Lake Los Angeles (2014) completes Mike’s desert trilogy which also includes: Littlerock (2010) and Pearblossom Hwy (2012).

Life Feels Good (Chce siÄ™ zyć) (Poland), directed by Maciej Pieprzyca. FLORIDA PREMIERE. The winner of several major awards at the 2014 Polish Academy Awards, Life Feels Good is the funny, brazen, sexual, fierce and wistfully melancholic story of Mateusz, a boy born with cerebral palsy and whose inner voice dialogue drives the film’s narrative during his 26 year fight to communicate with the world. Like My Left Foot, which is also based on a true story, the Maciej Pieprzyca-directed film draws parallels to Poland’s national struggles over the time period of Mateusz’s life, both the nation and the man refusing to give up.

Paradise (Paraíso) (Mexico), directed by Mariana Chenillo. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Mariana Chenillo’s second feature film takes on society’s obsession with “the perfect body” through light-hearted humor, poignant wit and absurd definitions of relationship balance. A deeply in-love, overweight married couple’s relationship suffers when, humiliated by social weight-loss chatter, they mutually seek to shrink their plus-sized bodies. Only one spouse succeeds, burdening the “failing” spouse with today’s idea of appearance and self-worth, even in the presence of unconditional love. The premiere at the Festival will be Chenillo’s second visit. Her previous film, Nora’s Will, won the Audience Award at MiamiFF26 in 2009.

Root (Raiz) (Chile), directed by Matías Rojas Valencia. FLORIDA PREMIERE. What happens when the estranged, abused 20-something daughter of a privileged family spontaneously adopts a nine year old boy orphaned from her domineering mother’s maid’s death? A long, rewarding road-trip, fraught with self-discovery, and bond-building. Despite their considerable age difference, Amalia and Cristobal’s common experiences of difficult family life are reinforced by director Matías Rojas Valencia’s striking, imposing scenery, at once building connections between the characters, the planet, and the wonders of life itself.

Spanish Affair (Ochos apellidos vascos) (Spain), directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. EAST COAST PREMIERE. No film in 2014 has tapped the Spanish zeitgeist to the astonishing level represented by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s Spanish Affair, catapulting the 98-minute comedy to become the all-time highest-grossing Spanish film at the domestic Spanish box office. A love-smitten Seville man must pretend to be a Basque man in order to win the girl of his dreams, highlighting the cultural divide between northern and southern Spain. The tensions of Basque separatist sentiments, exasperated by Spain’s economic crisis, are a difficult daily reality, providing a taboo-busting opportunity to ease the pain with laughter through a seemingly-innocent film that proves otherwise.

Vara: A Blessing (Bhutan / Hong Kong / Sri Lanka), directed by Khyentse Norbu. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Khyentse Norbu’s lush, breathtaking visuals unfold the story of India’s brutal, indiscriminate caste system, which too-frequently constricts the possibility for the simplest, earnest relationships. The communion of love, art and spirituality collide when a lower-caste Muslim enraptures a lovely Hindu girl through the earthy, artistic grace of pottery, complicating village elder plans of marrying Lila off to a wealthy scion. Vara: A Blessing is a triumphant expression of whirling dance, music and the boundaries of devotion. The film is accompanied by music from worldwide famed composer and producer Nitin Sawhney. Director Norbu, who is a practicing lama, visited MiamiFF21 in 2004 when his previous film, Travellers & Magicians, was screened at the Olympia Theater.

In addition to MIFFecito’s slate of premieres, visionary playwright and director Moisés Kaufman will host a special event titled A Conversation with Moisés Kaufman & THE LARAMIE PROJECT Retrospective Screening. The Laramie Project, his landmark 2002 HBO documentary, chronicles the legislative aftermath of gay teen Matthew Shephard’s hate-crime murder. The film, an exposé of intolerance and discrimination which echoes current news from Russia and Africa, offers fresh lessons in the ongoing war. The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act has positively impacted the past five years in the United States. The director will lead a post-screening conversation on the issues, techniques, and engagement his landmark film helped spark. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Kaufman is currently in Miami rehearsing for the November debut of Bizet’s Carmen, which is being co-produced by his Tectonic Theater Project.

Producing sponsors of MIFFecito include Ball & Chain Bar & Lounge.

Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week!  The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

Art is an inspiring talking point, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community. Hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing. Some events include live performances and other surprises! These shows are also important fundraisers and help us continue our programs.

Ileana Collazo
I learned all I needed to about creating art as a young girl in my grandmother’s garden—where I sat doing what as an adult I call meditating—that quiet spot became my temple. Today my art includes flowers, bursts of abstracted shapes and colors, geometrical excursions, digital paintings, and GRAMFFITI (the first graffiti made by a grandma, for which I was baptized IC the G.

Aquarela Sabol
Born in 1977 in a small river town in Ohio, Aquarela Allyson Sabol, began expressing and communicating through the medium of painting and drawing at a very early age. As an only child, she regarded art as an intimate personal companion: a simultaneous source of freedom, connection and inspiration to the world around her. Aquarela’s favorite subject of artistic exploration is the human form, full of beauty and flaws. She strives to portray the intangible quality of “ashe” or life essence of each subject to form a connection between the viewer, the subject and the artist. Each piece created is like the ring of a tree, which over time and years of growth, inevitably form the fingerprint of the artist herself.

Chy Tea Shoulin
Born in 1975 in Rockville, Connecticut, Chy Walton is an emerging artist in Miami and has involved himself with many mediums of art. Acrylic is his preference, he also works with charcoal, aerosol spray paint, acrylic oil, watercolor, wheat paste and others. He has exchibited his works in many venues in Miami and is very active in the Wynwood community.

PARK Project
PARK Project is a South Florida-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization we founded whose mission is simply to inspire people to Perform Acts of Random Kindness (PARK) every day. We have developed award-winning initiatives to promote kindness throughout our community; one of them being our upcoming signature event, The 5k PARK Fest. It’s also a huge benefit to smaller, non-profit groups looking to engage their volunteers and donors as well as corporations looking to raise money for an aligned cause to increase their brand’s community involvement & corporate responsibility.

Heroines Choir
Heroes Unite has been dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through the arts since 1999. Utilizing innovative programming and volunteerism we have impacted thousands of youth, special populations and undeserved communties. Our current programs include MMT (Mobile Micro Theater- bring the latest trends in performing arts to unsuspecting neighborhoods via our fully converted bus to black box theater) SSAS (Daily cultural programing for 6 -12 year olds using the ancient arts of China improving self respect, focus, discipline and mindfulness) and The Heroines Choir (cancer victors learning how to sing for healing and empowerment)

If you think 10,000 techies is a whole lot of geek power, how about 20,000? This year, TigerDirect has signed with the iconic Marlins Park in Miami to host an even bigger evening of innovation, emerging technology and interactive entertainment for its third annual TigerDirect Tech Bash this fall. Along with the expected bonanza of technology exhibits, demonstrations and large-scale activities, TigerDirect promises several new features, including on-site purchasing and even bigger names in tech.

³We are thrilled to double the size of last year’s Tech Bash and to expose our customers to the latest technology products and innovations,² says Steven Leeds, Director of Corporate Marketing at TigerDirect. ³We are equally excited about our partnerships with local companies and organizations as this is our effort to further propel South Florida into the international tech spotlight.”

With so many groundbreaking changes occurring regularly in the tech world, it is only fitting that the internationally covered Tech Bash would need to expand its offerings to keep up with the current state of affairs. At the 2013 Tech Bash, over 10,000 attendees immersed themselves in a stadium takeover event where 115 exhibitors- including Intel, HP, Lenovo, Dell and others- wowed crowds with activations, product launches and presentations of the latest tablets, laptops, big screens, cloud storage tech and other emerging technologies.

Attendees of this year¹s TigerDirect Tech Bash can expect live media coverage, interactive brand activations and exclusive deals. Additionally, TigerDirect will be letting the kids in on the fun- entry age to open up to 13+. Most notable of the current plethora of updates is allowing consumers to make on-site purchases, allowing attendees a chance to not only test new products, but to also take home exclusive products before the rest of the world has a chance.

Kontempo Art, a contemporary art gallery located in fabulously eclectic Calle Ocho, is proud to present Ileana Collazo’s Floral Fantasies.

In her words: “My work includes not only flowers, but bursts of abstract shapes and colors; lines that form seductive structures. To encapsulate it’s essence; I create small worlds of movement, colors, and shapes that entice the observer to travel through my work surface—colliding with the images, finding their way around to yet another shape, and finding it as alluring to linger gazing at them as I find it to linger in a garden; also, my work is representative of the twists, turns, bumps, and alternatives that each of us transverses in the course of our daily lives.”

Ileana was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. She lived in Spain, Florida, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts; before returning to Miami, where she began her artistic career.

The Attack (L’attentat)
a film by Ziad Doueiri
Based on Yasmina Khadra’s controversial international bestseller L’attentat
Lebanon, France, Qatar, Belgium | drama | 104 min. | trailer
Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles

An Arab surgeon living in Tel Aviv discovers a dark secret about his wife in the aftermath of a suicide bombing.

The Attack begins with a hero unusual to cinema: a Palestinian who is a citizen of Israel and a surgeon in a Tel Aviv hospital. Dr. Amin Jaafari (Ali Suliman) is on the verge of receiving a prestigious award from his peers when he gets a frantic cell phone call from his wife Siham. It is the last time he will ever hear her voice. A bomb goes off in a nearby café, and dozens of victims are brought to the hospital for treatment. Siham is among the dead, but not among the victims; incomprehensibly, this educated, upper-middle class woman was carrying the suicide bomb.

Amin’s world is turned upside down; how could his own wife, the love of his life, commit such an atrocity? The Attack is about Amin’s overwhelming feelings of futility as he attempts to make sense of a terrorism born in his own home. Yet writer/director Ziad Doueiri’s film is not despairing. It makes horror personal; it asks us what changes can we make in our own world? The recent wounds of the Boston marathon bomb give us an even more visceral emotional participation.

In a shocking and discouraging twist, in mid-May of this year, the League of Arab States instructed its 22 member nations to boycott The Attack, as Lebanese-born Doueiri shot the film in Israel, where it is forbidden for Lebanese citizens to travel. All release plans for this important and topical, dialogue-creating film in those nations have now been cancelled. Currently exiled in Paris, Doueiri will participate in a live question and answer session with the audience after the screening. – Jaie Laplante

This screening is co-sponsored by Coral Gables Art Cinema.

How do I stand out in the sea of Hip-Hop artists trying to make it the business today? How do I build a brand and create an image? Should I put out a promotional mixtape or work on a full album first? How can I get sponsorship for shows and tours? Do I need a booking agent?

These and countless other questions have been asked by independent Hip-Hop artists across the country for years. And for the first time DEMOS: An Independent Artist’s Guide To Success answers these questions masterfully with, with the help of Hip-Hop legends, successful independent artists, and tastemakers covering the entire span of the Music Industry and Hip-Hop culture. With appearances by Talib Kweli, Naughty By Nature, Black Thought, DJ Quik, Rapper Big Pooh, Siedah Garrett, Tony Rock, Dwele, Mack 10 and a host of others, DEMOS is guaranteed to become a much needed, revitalizing game changer for the Independent Hip-Hop community.

The brainchild of new documentarian Kareem Fort, COO of HiPNOTT Records and co-owner of Cypher Lounge Radio, DEMOS is not your average film. It truly serves as an awe-inspiring guide to success for independent artists at any level of their career.

To help bring his vision to life, Fort brought on HiPNOTT Records CEO and renowned Hip-Hop blogger Kevin Nottingham, who shares the executive producer credit; along with Hip-Hop artist and Cypher Lounge Radio Co-Owner and Host Hassahn Phenomenon and manager Soul Wallace as Producers on the DEMOS project. The result is an honest and dynamic look at the real success reflected across the Independent Hip-Hop community.

DEMOS was created to educate and inspire aspiring and emerging independent Hip-Hop artists to re-evaluate their approach to the business and accelerate their path to success. The film’s primary objective is to provide insight on the myriad ways to establish and further a successful independent music career. Each of the industry veterans and established artists featured share experiences, advice and techniques in an unusually candid manor, providing an invaluable and unprecedented resource for the up-and-coming artist. From scholarly advice about branding and getting noticed, to revelations about submitting content to the media, DEMOS leaves no subject untouched, making it an instant must-see for any serious musician.

Now set for an August 2013 release, DEMOS will thoroughly examine how the music industry has changed over the course of the last 20 years and how to navigate those changes from the unique standpoint of the artists. Now more than ever, artists need to empower and equip themselves with the biggest asset to maximize their chances at success: information. DEMOS offers every secret weapon to catapult an independent artists career to the next level.

The Miami Marlins declare May ‘Marlins Education Month’. The month will feature Marlins ThinkTank, MASPP Nights, Weather Day, MASPP Teacher Appreciation Night and MASPP Career Workshops. The month long festivities will highlight the Marlins commitment to education and to the South Florida community. Marlins Education Month starts today with Weather Day where over 6,000 students are attending the Marlins game against the Mets at 12:40 P.M. Weather Day includes a pregame presentation by the CBS 4 Weather Team about various weather related topics and affects to the climate in South Florida. The presentation is geared towards 3rd – 8th grade students and follows the Sunshine State Standards.

The month of educational fun continues on May 9 when the Marlins host one of the final three Marlins Ayudan School Partnership Program (MASPP) Career Workshops. The MASPP Career Workshop Series is a unique educational opportunity designed specifically for students of Miami Senior High School and TERRA Environmental Research Institute. The goal of the program is to offer students a real-world glimpse at a variety of disciplines as they begin the path toward their future career. Each workshop features presentations, panel discussions, a tour of Marlins Park, as well as small group breakout sessions. The topics covered in the remaining workshops are as follows: May 9 – Finance, Human Resources, Legal and Risk Management, May 16 – Social Media, Community Outreach/Foundation, Public Relations and Broadcasting, and May 23 – Grounds, Facilities/Events, Baseball Operations, and Player Development. Held select Thursdays at Marlins Park, the workshops are designed and hosted by the Marlins Ayudan teams aligned with Miami Senior High and TERRA.

On May 14 the Marlins will host the first of eight MASPP Nights. Each night the Marlins will celebrate and showcase the educational partnership with a different MASPP school. Partner schools are located in the Greater Miami area and were selected through an application process. The schedule is as follows; May 14, Citrus Grove Elementary School, May 15, Miami Senior High School, May 16, Bunche Park Elementary School, May 20, Terra Environmental Research Institute, May 21, Ben Sheppard Elementary School, May 22, Citrus Grove Middle School, May 29, Miami Edison Middle School, May 30, Bent Tree Elementary School.

On May 15 the Marlins will begin visits to the 17 winning classrooms of the Marlins Think Tank sweepstakes. Marlins Think Tank is a curriculum-enhancement program that aims to enrich the learning experiences of children in grades 4 through 6 by linking baseball to the subject areas of Writing, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Health & Fitness. Throughout the lessons, students read about baseball, learn about Miami, and even hear from some current Miami Marlins players! During Think Tank Week, Marlins players, coaches, broadcasters and Manager will visit classrooms that utilized the program. The students and teacher will demonstrate to the Marlins personnel what they learned through the program, which is followed by a Q&A session and ends with an autograph session for the students. Think Tank visits will continue on May 17, 20 and 21.

On May 18 the Marlins will host the MASPP Teacher Appreciation Night. The Marlins will provide tickets to each school for their teachers to come and enjoy the game together. Each school is also receiving VIP passes for the postgame concert.

hosted by Larry Dogg

Local musicians Suenalo, Spam Allstars, and ArtOfficial organize a benefit concert for one of their own – trumpet player Ted Zimmerman. Ted walked out his front door on New Years Eve and was struck in the hand by a stray bullet. Although thankful it wasn’t more serious, it did strike him in the hand that he plays with. Needless to say he has not been able to keep up his work schedule during his recovery. Ted is also a volunteer mentor for the local organization Gogo (Guitars Over Guns) which provides musical mentorship in local schools that do not have music programs. The event on March 24th will raise funds for Ted’s hospital bills and for the Gogo Organization.

On New Year’s Eve, Ted Zimmerman was struck by a stray bullet on his front porch. The bullet (most likely from someone firing into the air) whizzed by his head and went though his first finger, shattering the bone, before lodging in his middle finger. Ted is a professional trumpet player with one of Miami’s most prominent bands, The Spam Allstars, and a highly sought after freelance musician. For the last 4 years, he has also been a mentor with the GOGO (Guitars Over Guns Organization) program, a non-profit aimed at using music to provide at-risk middle school students an alternative to the negative influences that typically dominate their environs.

While he is lucky to be alive, the bullet cost Ted more than an overnight hospital stay and endless medical bills. After an involved surgery on his hand to remove thousands of bone fragments, Ted found out that he was fortunate to not have irreversible tendon or nerve damage. The bullet however shattered the bone in his index finger (one of the three he depends on for playing the trumpet) so completely that the bone could not be fused.

He will spend the next few months hoping and waiting for enough bone callus formation to allow him to begin the long road of physical therapy – learning how to use his finger again by picking up marbles one at a time. The surgeon told Ted he can hope for 50% mobility in the knuckle of his index finger. At best, he is expected to make a full enough recovery to relearn how to play the trumpet flat-fingered.

invitesmFebruary 22nd from 7-10p
Upstairs Underground
1155 (rear-upstairs) SW 6th Street
Miami, Florida 33130

Through a meditative process of layering paint, ink, paper, found images, maps and silkscreen, Mary Larsen creates dream-like landscapes that are at once disorienting yet somehow familiar. Disparate elements work together to create an ephemeral atmosphere of violence and beauty, filled with contrasts and contradictions; balance through imbalance. By obscuring and revealing, each layer unfolds the narrative. The power of nature, history and chance coalesce to form an unsettling place that glimpses the possibility of hope. Each layer adds richness and depth, creating intimacy. Man is overwhelmed by the sublime power of nature and the pessimistic state of the world. The individual is depicted as a solitary figure in nature, all of his/her energy spent, on the edge of danger. The process is a transformative experience that informs the work. Images of violence and war and the power of nature are transformed into beauty and hope.

Exhibition runs from February 22nd – March 15th  2013

The film takes viewers on a journey through Baker’s life from his young beautiful faced years to his old and detached life with his face a ruin. A series of interviews with his children, ex-wife, friends, associates and lovers add to the rich texture of this fascinating film. Renowned photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber is scheduled to attend for intro and Q&A on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 7:00 p.m.

·         Miami Future Cinema Critics (MFCC) is a new program in celebration of MIFF’s 30th anniversary. The aim of the program is to provide Miami-based film aficionados with a fascinating opportunity to discover new cinema – outside of the roughly 600 films that are commercially released in the U.S. annually, and learn new ways to develop their voice and attract new audiences for their own critical work. Through an application process, a group of 7 Miami writers (between the ages 21 to 30 ) will blog (written, audio or video) about films from a select playlist of 8-10 titles, curated by MIFF’s 2013 programming team. In addition to blogging, the MFCC will designate one film in their playlist as an overall “best film,” based on the Critics’ own criterion of artistic merit. Miami Future Cinema Critics Best Film of 2013 Award will be announced and presented as part of MIFF’s official Awards Night program on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center of the Performing Arts.

·         Miami Encuentros will for the first time in the program’s history award a cash prize of $10,000 to one winning project as selected by a jury of industry professionals. The prize is sponsored by EGEDA, the Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association from Spain. In addition, Madrid/Barcelona-based International Sales Agency 6 Sales will offer a 2-year representation contract to a winning project, with the ultimate goal of securing worldwide distribution. The objective of the competition category is to help facilitate and support the completion of Latin American and U.S. Hispanic feature film projects in post-production, and propelling them towards their debuts on the international stage.

Havana Fusion Underground at PAX by Bob Quesada

The sound is flawless. The melody emanating from the twelve musicians known as: Charanga Tipica Tropical is as good as good will ever get. This is a cohesiveness which can only be achieved after nearly forty years of playing together. It is the fusion that we know as “salsa”, being played the way it was meant to be played; with violins, flute, piano, trombones, bass, and of course: percussion, plenty of percussion.

On the dance floor some of the best dancers anywhere are going all out. Now, this is not the watered down stuff that you see on some tv shows, nobody here is dancing for ratings, they are dancing for the sheer enjoyment of moving their bodies to the rhythm of the music, and the moves are simply amazing. The dance floor is big enough to accommodate pros and amateurs alike, everybody has a smile on their face.

“Havana Fusion Underground” is the brainchild of Rene Gueits, a salsa dancing master himself and owner of “Salsa Lovers”, Miami’s premier salsa dancing school (98,000 students so far…and counting). Gueits has brought together the band, cigar rollers, a dance art exhibit, a dance showcase by the salsa lovers student team and even a latin food truck to make this an unforgettable event in what could easily be described as the most eclectic place to party.

We are at the Performing Arts Exchange or “PAX”, a venue preferred by some of the best known international artists such as Ricardo Arjona, Chino y Nacho and Gaby Moreno just to name a few. There’s reason for these artists to want to perform here. Roxanne Scalia, one of the founders explains it this way: “PAX is about finding the authenticity in art…everything we book at PAX is very scrutinized…we are an independent performing arts center…we focus on latin and world music …we have over 740 yards of acoustic sound” she adds: “My whole intention of opening this place is I want every customer to walk out with something more… when you give good art, you walk out that much smarter”.

Ever since the famous Cuban trumpet master Inaudi Paisan first gave him a taste for the trumpet in 1982, it soon became the destiny of Renoir Rodriguez to become one of the most influential trumpet players of our time. His contemporary approach to a classical instrument is something that can only be developed and mastered though years of experience and dedication.

Latin funk. Fusion. Jam band. Multicultural cocktail. Afro-Latin-Baby-Makin’-Descarga-Funk. Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.
