If you’ve ever wondered what Biscayne Boulevard looked like when it was brand new – or what the Miami Beach Kennel Club looked like before it was South Pointe Park, or what Lincoln Road looked like when cars drove on it, Sylvia Gurinsky has a show for you.

Gurinsky, a history consultant, tour guide and freelance writer, has dug through the files at the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College to find film and video clips that recapture vanished South Florida places and spaces.

The result: “Once There Was A Place…,” an informal tour through South Florida’s past presented by Gurinsky. The screening is open to the public and free of charge. Light refreshments will follow.

Among the sights recovered by Gurinsky’s research are the Brickell Mansion, home of William and Mary Brickell, captured in never-before-seen footage photographed shortly before the building was demolished.

Three Miami hotels that defined the Magic City’s boomtown skyline, the Columbus, Everglades and McAllister Hotels, are featured, as are the Diplomat Hotel, a MiMo classic designed by Norman Giller, and Morris Lapidus’ Fontainebleau, shown under construction on the beachfront site of Harvey Firestone’s mansion.

Sport facilities such as Miami’s beloved Orange Bowl and the Miami Beach Kennel Club, neighborhoods from Overtown to Sunny Isles and other sites are also covered in “Once There Was A Place…”

This two-hour walking tour highlights several of downtown Miami’s best historic buildings, most of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours begin with a brief introductory presentation at MCAD, itself located in the 1912 Old Post Office Building at the center of the City of Miami’s Historic District and covers a three-block area in the core of the Central Business District. Whether you are an architect or just love architecture, this tour is for you!

Tours depart from MCAD rain or shine. All are $20 or $15 for seniors and students. Each adult ticket admits one child under the age of 8 for free. Advance reservations online are required (up to 60 minutes before tour time). Tours are held on alternate Saturdays and begin promptly at 10:00 AM. All sales end at 9:30 AM. For pre-paid guests, please be at MCAD by 9:50 AM.

An Urban Sketch Tour

Come explore Miami’s historic downtown like an architect! See our city’s landmark buildings through an architect’s eyes, using a sketchbook and pen. Joaquim Perez (University of Miami) and David Rifkind (FIU), local architects and educators, will introduce you to basic drawing techniques and lead you on the urban adventure brief sketching tour of downtown Miami. A good pair of walking shoes, maybe a hat and certainly a sketchbook and drawing implements will come in handy!

Tours depart from MCAD rain or shine. Tours are limited to 12 participants and sell out quickly. Tickets are $20 for AIA & AIAS members, $25 for seniors and students, $30 for all others. The Motivational Edge is proud to present its annual Music & Art Student Showcase. The evening will include drinks courtesy of Premier Beverage, bites available for purchase through Empowered Youth’s Vibe 305 Food Truck, raffles and most importantly, a celebration of local talented youth. Enjoy several types of performances including dance, spoken word, singing and group instrumentals. Also on display and available for purchase will be an entire gallery of one of a kind art masterpieces created by our very talented students. These students will surely amaze you as they showcase how hard they’ve been working to perfect their skills.

Many of the presenting students come from the Irie Foundation Allapattah Music and Literacy Center through our Lyrical Expression and Audio Recording classes, which is available to them because of a generous grant from the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation.

The eighth-annual Miami New Times Iron Fork, presented by the Downtown Miami Development Authority, will once again partner with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau to host the official Miami Spice Kickoff Event on Thursday, July 30, 2015.

The kickoff event returns to the Hyatt Regency Miami where dining enthusiasts will enjoy some of the finest restaurants featured during the Miami Spice program, as well as dozens of other top local eateries. The footprint also extends into the James L Knight Center’s world-class theater and entertainment venue.

The event brings guests culinary creations from more than 60 of South Florida’s luxury and fine-dining restaurants, including Morton’s the Steakhouse, 26 Sushi & Tapas, Miami Smokers, City Hall The Restaurant, Sugar Yummy Mama, Rusty Pelican, Novecento, and Donut Divas, just to name a few. In addition, Miami New Times has once again partnered with the charitable organization Share Our Strength to support their No Kid Hungry campaign to bring awareness of childhood hunger in America. This past Thursday, the Pérez Art Museum (PAMM) Poplife Social featured John Hancock III whose sounds ranged from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso.

The third Thursdays Poplife Social have received a very positive response from the community and to meet the growing demand for the series, they have added pre-ticketing and more food and bar stations.

The menu items included Miso Glazed Chicken Skewers, Pork Belly Bao Buns, Grilled Mushroom Bao Buns, Shrimp Chips and Kimchee pickles.

This was the perfect way to enjoy a Thursday evening: Art galleries, live music and great food!

The Blazing World, by Siri Hustvedt. Breaking down the book through fiction reading, Olympia actors will bring to life the characters of Hustvedt’s latest novel, the provocative story of artist Harriet “Harry” Burden who, after years of watching her work ignored or dismissed by critics, conducts an experiment she calls Maskings. She presents her own art behind three male masks, concealing her female identity.

Wednesday, June 17th will be our first evening focused solely on fiction, breaking down a single book, and The Blazing World, with its fractured structure and diverging perspectives, really lends itself to this approach. Raquel Roque from Books & Books in Coral Gables will be on hand with copies of the novel for sale.

Doors open at 6:00 pm and the reading starts at 6:30 pm. Cocktails available at the bar. Guided tour of the historic Olympia Theater during intermission.

This is a FREE event, open to the public.

In The Lobby Lounge . . .”WORDS! is our second foray into the wonderful world of Wednesdays in Downtown Miami,” says Olympia Theater Executive Director Robert Geitner, “bringing theatre and prose back to the Olympia on a monthly basis.” Future words-oriented evenings will include directed play readings, improv, skits & spontaneous theater, short stories, readings of excerpts from longer works of fiction, and personal monologues “in their own words.” By October 2015, the event will be scheduled the first Wednesday of every month.

In 1891, Jamaica’s economy was in the doldrums. In response, a group of Jamaican businessmen, calling themselves the “Awakening Jamaica” committee, hired the studio of Valentine & Sons of Dundee, Scotland to create a photographic portrait of the island as a commercial and tourist paradise. Valentine & Sons, in business since 1851, was a prominent maker of landscape photographs and travel views.
This exhibition features more than 50 of these prints. Visitors will learn about the creation and impact of the images, featuring urban and rural views of the island in the late 19th century. Also on display will be archival items related to the studio of Valentine & Sons and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

The Gallery @ McCormick Place with cohost Life Is Art will Celebrate its 3rd Anniversary Celebration on First Friday Downtown Arts Night. This event will feature artist Griselda Lechini.

The performances will start at 7:30pm sharp with HistoryMiami’s Artist in Residence Flamenco dancer and choreographer Clarita Filgueiras. At 8:30pm, The Opera Atelier will delight with an unexpected and riveting performance. Also, throughout the night we will have local Miami artist and DJ, Jonathan Chan playing some of Miami’s greatest hits.

On the upper floors of McCormick Place, 2nd, 3rd,and 7th floor, houses the fine art studios of Sidney Cooper, Gustavo Gonzalez, Daniela Canabal, Bonnie Rodriguez, Arrington Magny, Sophie Perreault, Maria Dussan, Future Vision Records, Jaro Joseph, King J, Mariana Vidal Goss, Karen Kim, and Sharon Rauvola. Also debuting for Art Walk is MyoCortex Human Performance Facility, they value continuing education and takes pride in remaining on the forefront of exercise biomechanics. And they are located on the 5th floor. Lastly is the Opera Atelier’s new corporate headquarters on the 6th Floor. The Opera Atelier is a world leader in the rediscovery and revitalization of period opera and ballet, particularly works from the Baroque era through their historically informed productions.

As McCormick Place Miami Gallery enters its third year; art curator Sean McCormick has a very special announcement regarding the future of the McCormick Place Gallery as well as a new and innovative approach to future gallery events.

Drinks will be served by Fernet Branca; one of Italy’s most famous liquor. Food and wine will be provided as well.

From 1960-1962, over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland in what became the largest recorded child refugee exodus in the Western Hemisphere—an event that remained essentially unknown for over 30 years. Fearing their children’s indoctrination by Fidel Castro’s newly installed socialist and revolutionary government, parents entrusted their children’s fate with government and religious organizations in the U.S. Some children would reunite with their parents quickly, others after years of separation, and still others never saw their parents again. Diego Meraviglia, Vice President and Director of Education of the North American Sommelier Association (NASA) and Gold-Pin Sommelier presents a new, 6 hour course that covers the vast majority of wines produced in the Piemonte region; their typicality, classification, history, characteristics and folklore, as well as notions of traditional food pairings and overview of the entire region itself. Tasting of the most representative wine appellations in Piemonte, alongside some hidden gems, is also included. The course is designed to please both the wine enthusiast and professional.

Although often compared to France’s Burgundy, Piemonte has seemed out of reach for many to grasp and remains shrouded in mystery. Meraviglia aims to “lift some of the fog” (so typical of this land) and provide a comprehensive understanding of the culture, food and, most importantly, the wine.

In addition to the lightings, there will also be a community event held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Miami. Comics and graphic novels have become a medium that allows for all manner of storytelling options and varieties.
In this workshop, we will explore the art of graphic storytelling, and the various techniques employed in telling a visual story. We’ll examine various tools of the trade, and combine all these lessons into creating a short comics story of your own devising, in the subject and format of your choice.
Artists of all levels are welcome — cartooning is not about being able to make a beautiful illustration — cartooning is the art of communicating ideas through your drawings. Think of your drawing style as your handwriting—maybe it’s simple block letters, perhaps it’s a flowery cursive, as long as it can clearly convey your ideas.

George O’Connor is the author and illustrator of The New York Times bestselling graphic novel series, Olympians – a projected twelve volume series retelling classical Greek mythology in comics form, one god at a time. The most recent volume, Ares: Bringer of War, is an all-ages comics distillation of The Iliad in 66 pages. In addition to Olympians, George adapted the 1634 journal of Dutch explorer Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert into the graphic novel Journey into Mohawk Country, and was the illustrator of acclaimed playwright Adam Rapp’s first graphic novel Ball Peen Hammer. Lony Haley-Nelson notes: “Wonder is valuable… because it leads us to learn and remember.” Using the language and vocabulary of myth, folklore, science, and natural history as inspiration, this generative workshop will help you jump-start the blank page in front of you. We’ll participate in several immersion ideas for poems and journaling (some outdoors, weather permitting) to help you find new ways to revitalize your writing. Our time will be divided into composing drafts; chatting about various myths, articles, essays, and poems; and sharing your own poems in a workshop format. This class is ideal for both the beginner and someone wanting to refresh their poetry-writing strategies.
Aimee Nezhukumatathil is the author of three books of poetry: Lucky Fish, winner of the Hoffer Grand Prize for Prose and Independent Books; At the Drive-In Volcano; and Miracle Fruit. Her poems and essays have appeared in American Poetry Review, Quarterly West, New England Review, Ploughshares, FIELD, Antioch Review, Prairie Schooner, Slate, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Southern Review, and Tin House. The New Tropic is proud to partner on a community bike ride to discuss a variety of local issues from transit to gentrification while visiting the diverse and fascinating neighborhoods of Coconut Grove and Little Havana. You’ll get to meet with community leaders from incredible organizations like Emerge Miami, Diversity Miami, Coconut Grove’s Collaborative Development Corp. and Little Havana Tours.

The tour’s pace will be leisurely enough so our group stays together during the entire excursion, which is approximately 15 miles long with multiple stops scheduled for every few miles. Required gear is close-toed shoes (e.g. sneakers), while sun protection is recommended (e.g. hat, sunscreen, etc.). The tour will culminate back at museum park for the annual Philanthrofest Festival.

ROUTE:

First stop: The fountain at Bayfront Park
Coconut Grove stops: Historical emphasis will take place along Charles Ave. next to the Mariah Brown House and Odd Fellows Hall. Current/Future Development emphasis will take place just outside the Collaborative Development Corp.’s office along Grand Ave.
Little Havana stops: Historical emphasis will take place at the Los Pinarenos Fruiteria along 8th Street across the way from Cuban Memorial Park. Current/Future Development emphasis will take place near intersection of SW 12th Ave. and 6th Street by Con Sabor a Mexico.

About Ed Stevens
Ed Stevens, M.Ed., M.A., began his career in visual and performing arts at Boston University, where he studied art history and visual arts and received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Ed spent the last 20 years as a playwright, director and set designer, receiving the Kennedy Center’s 2005 David Mark Cohen Award. His work was produced in New York City, Provincetown, St. Petersburg and San Diego. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 2012 and has returned to his roots in the visual arts. Currently he creates striking multi-media assemblies that incorporate social commentary and a sense of dramatic storytelling. His ASK,TELL! series celebrates the end of the disastrous “don’t ask, don’t tell” anti-gay policy of the US military.

About Gianna DiBartolomeo
Gianna DiBartolomeo is a Miami native, born and raised in Miami, Florida. She earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Florida International University. Her work has been exhibited during Art Basel Miami, in New York, New Hampshire, Miami’s Wynwood Art District, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, South Miami, on the cover of Creative Quarterly, MOCA’s website, and in Visual Overture and the Miami New Times.

About Paul A. Vitello
I was born in Miami Florida in 1950, my parents are Italian and Cuban first generation American. I feel that I got the best of both worlds, with their Spanish and Italian art heritages as part of my life. received my Bachelor of Fine Art, Florida International University, in 1976 and my Bachelor of Education, University of Miami, in 1974, I also have my State of Florida Teaching Certification in : Art Education K – 12 as well as in Graphic Technology, and Technology Education. I am also a professional member of numerous art societies and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art [ New York City ] member, 2009 and THE Norton Museum of Art [Palm Beach] member, 2009. I have been involved in many one person and group exhibitions in my art career from my first one man show at Florida International University, Miami Fl [Vitello glass inspired oil & watercolor works] in 1979 to “VITELLO 2002” A Retrospection, Walter C. Young Center, Pembroke Pines, Fl. Also fist prize in watercolors in the 9th annual Compettion in Pembroke Pines. Just finished 30years teaching, and now re entering the art world.

“Ready for its close up” on the day its doors opened in 1954, the Fontainebleau Hotel was designed for grand entrances and glamorous scenes.

Film critic and history buff Kevin Wynn uses unique film clips from the Wolfson Archives and excerpts from feature films to trace the Fontainebleau’s film “career,” an arc that also reveals the hotel’s rise and fall as a symbol of glamour and excitement.

Wynn will also present unique film and video from the Wolfson Archives that documents the Fontainebleau’s construction and opening, its popularity with celebrities and tourists and the context of its creation.

Presented during Dade Heritage Days, the informal talk is a presentation of the Wolfson Archives and Dade Heritage Trust.

On Thursday, March 26th at 3pm, the City of Miami City Commission is scheduled to vote on a proposal to negotiate a “financial assistance package” to connect and build a Tri-Rail terminus at All Aboard Florida’s new MiamiCentral Station scheduled to open in 2016.

According to the Miami Herald, Mayor Tomás Regalado says he will “veto any attempt to pay for the project with city money”. Regardless of how you feel on specific funding proposals, it’s important to let the Mayor and Commissioners know how vital this Tri-Rail Connection is. Send the message that:

The new TriRail Connection at All Aboard Florida’s MiamiCentral would open just in time for drivers to avoid the looming five-year nightmare on I-95 south of Golden Glades.

Just when you thought getting into Downtown Miami couldn’t get any worse, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announces the most significant I-95 project in Miami-Dade since the installation of toll express lanes. FDOT plans to replace pavement and make other upgrades between NW 8th and NW 79th streets starting in 2017. Kick off O, Miami Poetry Festival and National Poetry Month with the smoothest event April: a lyrical boat cruise up the Miami River.

Co-created and -produced with O, Miami , Miami River Poetry Cruise is a journey into the Heart of Dade-ness, guided by locals, protected by pythons, and serenaded by some of Miami’s best poets in a round-robin, “tour-guide” format invented just for this occasion. Hear the first-ever Prayer to Bayside, the second Ode to Fort Dallas, and settle, once and for all, via poetry, the debate of which is the better fish spot: Garcia’s or Casablanca?

Tickets will include free beer provided by Biscayne Bay Brewing. (After that, it’s a cash bar. Yes, there’s a bar on the boat. Why would you ever get on a boat that DIDN’T have a bar?) Light snacks will be provided.

The cruise boards promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Bayside Marina, travels up the Miami River, and re-docks in Bayside at 8:30 p.m.

“Maxine’s Closet is a fundraiser in memory of Maxine Thurston-Fischer, PhD, who was a trailblazer and activist in the social work field. Maxine was also a serious fashionista. In keeping with Maxine’s efforts on behalf of marginalized children and youth, Maxine’s Closet will generate awareness of and support for Florida Foster Care Review (FFCR) through fashion and design. The event will feature the sale or silent auction of more than 100 items donated by Maxine, including designer clothing, jewelry and glasses, either new or gently used. The evening will include cocktails, lite bites, music and, of course, fashion.”

“All proceeds from the sale of items at Maxine’s Closet will be donated to FFCR and will be used to further the organization’s work. In keeping with FFCR’s mission and with Maxine’s tradition of giving back, guests were encouraged to bring new or gently used handbags or shoes, for Dress for Success.”

Having announced its colossal Phase One lineup back in January 2015, the World’s Premier Electronic Music Festival now unveils the second wave of talent set to perform at the seventeenth annual edition of Ultra Music Festival over Miami Music Week this March.

Receiving the biggest boost for Phase Two is Ultra Music Festival’s now-legendary Live Stage, which will be playing host to some of the most exciting live performers in the world from March 27-29, 2015. Gracing the Live Stage, and joining an already eye-watering batch of Phase One acts set to rock the iconic Klipsch Amphitheatre in just a few weeks time, will be phase 2 headliners including instrumental super group Big Gigantic, Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo, masked man of mystery Claptone and Norwegian nu-disco extraordinaire Todd Terje, who will be making his long awaited Ultra debut!

Recently formed project Get Real (aka Chicago House legend Green Velvet and Dirtybird head honcho Claude Von Stroke) will be headlining Ultra’s newly conceived Resistance Stage on Saturday March 28, as two of the biggest names in house music make their collaborative worldwide festival debut and prepare to send the vast wave of Ultranauts joining this year’s Resistance into a tech infused frenzy.

Additionally, and in a big move for the South Florida festival giant, techno kingpin and phase 2 headliner Seth Troxler is now confirmed to perform in the mighty Carl Cox & Friends Megastructure on Saturday 28, while the mammoth Ultra Worldwide stage prepares to welcome the return of another phase 2 headliner and Ultra firm favorite, Boys Noize and Miami local Cedric Gervais.

Ultra Music Festival will also be welcoming an official OWSLA stage for the very first time this year, led by some of the biggest names in bass, including Wiwek, Salva, Jack Beats, AC Slater and many more. Space Ibiza (named DJ Mag’s #1 club in the world for 2014) will be making its return for the fourth consecutive year to Ultra on Sunday 29, alongside Armin Van Buuren’s globally famed ASOT arena, which will be seeing off proceedings in the Megastructure for a finale to remember, while Stage 7 sees a total trance makeover on Saturday, with the likes of Orjan Nilsen, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Solarstone, Jochen Miller, Sied Van Riel and many more all now confirmed.

As if this weren’t enough, adding to the already huge first wave of talent set to grace this year’s newly designed Main Stage will be Las Vegas based progressive house pioneer 3LAU, Swedish super duo Cazzette, trance icon Dash Berlin and the man behind one of the biggest records of this year, which was used in as the official soundtrack to the Ultra Miami Phase One Trailer (Treasured Soul), Michael Calfan.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will host its 9th anniversary gala on April 24, 2015. The Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House will be transformed into an intimate dining and performance space for this special evening.

The 9th anniversary gala will once again be chaired by two of South Florida’s most esteemed members of the philanthropic community, Swanee and Paul DiMare. Adrienne Arsht, the Center’s name benefactor, will serve as honorary chair. Margaret and Mike Eidson will serve as Gala co-chairs. Gala proceeds will support the Center’s mission-driven arts education and community outreach programs.

“Every Gala is an opportunity for us to see how the support and funding provided by the philanthropic community has helped the Arsht Center in achieving its mission of making the performing arts accessible to all, as all the money raised through this event goes directly back to education programming,” said Swanee DiMare, chair of the Gala for the third year in a row.

Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning international superstar Barry Manilow will wow guests with a concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-with a special tribute to Frank Sinatra in honor of Frank’s 100th birthday. For the Arsht Center’s annual celebration, the Center will transform the Ziff Ballet Opera House into an intimate “supper club” with cocktails, dinner, and dancing directly on the Lynn Wolfson Stage. Downtown Boutique Hotel Invites Miamians to Pitch Their Ideas to Restore Old Post Office Building to Historic Grandeur

After beautifully restoring the historic Miami National Bank building and transforming it into The Langford Hotel, Miami-based Stambul Development today unveils details about the Old Post Office Development Contest, which invites local artists, urban planners, architects, students, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs and any other concerned Miamian to offer their personal vision of what should now become of the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse Building. Stambul Development encourages contestants to present ideas that are innovative, authentic, and original.

Stambul, a development and construction company specializing in the development of new structures including custom homes, commercial buildings and hospitality projects, recently embarked on a journey to revive downtown Miami. This journey began when Stambul teamed up with Coral Gables-based Trust Hospitality to convert the historic Beaux Arts edifice at 121 SE First Street into T

he Langford Hotel. Now that The Langford Hotel has become a reality, Stambul has strategically chosen The Old Post Office building as the next target of its revitalization efforts.

Located at the heart of downtown Miami at 100-118 Northeast Avenue, the Old Post Office is a significant landmark to the history of architecture, government, economics and community development in Miami. The four-story, Neo-Classical building was the first major federal facility in Miami, and was constructed over a three year period, from 1912-1914. It was designed by Kiehnel, Elliott and Oscar Wenderoth, and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1989. The Miami-Dade County Tax Records say this building was built in 1917.

Contest Goals

The aim of the Old Post Office Development Contest is to restore the Old Post Office to its original, historic grandeur while also providing the best use for the building and serving the surrounding downtown market. Stambul Development seeks to seamlessly integrate the Old Post Office building with the downtown community, and develop a project that is feasible, profitable, and that will attract people to the downtown area.

Contest Schedule

The Old Post Office Development Contest will adhere to the following schedule: The contest begins on January 01, 2015 and ends on June 19, 2015 (the “Contest Period”). Registration (to be made on the Registration Page) opens at 9:00 a.m. EST on January 01, 2015, and closes at 5:00 p.m. EST on April 20, 2015. Registered Participants will be offered a guided visit to the Old Post Office Building at 9:00 a.m. EST on April 27, 2015. Participant submissions (“Proposals”) will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. EST on April 21, 2015 until 5:00 p.m. EST on June 5, 2015 (the “Proposal Period”). Winners will be announced on June 19, 2015.

Contest Prizes

The three most deserving projects will be chosen by a jury made up of members of the board of the company and local professionals based on the following criteria: creativity, feasibility, compliance with the contest’s goals, and innovation. The winners will have the opportunity to see their vision realized, showcase their Proposals at The Langford Hotel, and receive both a two-night stay at The Langford and one following money Prizes: First Prize: $5,000; Second Prize: $2,000; Third Prize: $1,000. City Theatre continues its 20th anniversary celebration with In the Lobby Lounge . . . City Theatre!, a special program presented by City Theatre and the Olympia Theater that features six directed readings of short plays that are in consideration for future production and/or are part of the City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting Contest. The Social Justice Table would like to invite you to our next Social Justice Community Gathering, where we will be sharing information about the different ways social justice organizations are effecting change and creating opportunities for low-income, minority communities in the Miami-Dade area.

The Social Justice Table is a network of organizations committed to building collective power to effect positive change in our communities. We realize that while many organizations in Miami-Dade County are committed to addressing injustice and inequality and creating prosperity and opportunity for everyone in our county, much of the work is being done in silos. We recognize that by working together we can be stronger and more effective.

If you are or want to become active in social justice work, as part of an organization or as a concerned individual, you should come to our gathering. We are going to be talking about the Miami Worldcenter, one of the largest urban developments in the United States, which will be built only steps away from our gathering, in the historic African American neighborhood of Overtown. Local elected officials and developers have been harshly criticized for signing a deal that does not create real prosperity for the people of Overtown. Come hear about the efforts underway to ensure the long term interests of local residents are met.

Our partners are working on a number of other issues and campaigns, including efforts to raise the minimum wage, end violence against women and girls, passing responsible wage ordinances, protecting immigrant families from separation and harassment, addressing state violence against minority communities, and many more.

Be a part of the discussion. Create and participate in collective efforts to ensure that justice, equality, prosperity, and opportunity reach everyone in our community, and not just a handful of people. We hope to create collective power to ensure collective gains. Please join us.

In keeping with Maxine’s efforts on behalf of marginalized children and youth, Maxine’s Closet will generate awareness of and support for Florida Foster Care Review (FFCR) through fashion and design. The event will feature the sale or silent auction of more than 100 items donated by Maxine, including designer clothing, jewelry and glasses, either new or gently used. The evening will include cocktails, lite bites, music and, of course, fashion.

All proceeds from the sale of items at Maxine’s Closet will be donated to FFCR and will be used to further the organization’s work. In keeping with FFCR’s mission and with Maxine’s tradition of giving back, guests are encouraged to bring new or gently used handbags or shoes, for Dress for Success.

Art/Work Connections Seminar 25: Grants for Artists 2.0 – Meet the Grantmakers at Miami Center for Architecture and Design on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.  Thank you to everyone who attended the Art/Work Connections #25: Grants for Artists 2.0, Featuring the Miami Foundation, Knight Foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs. We had a good crowd and the response was overwhelmingly positive. If you enjoyed it and learned something, please consider leaving a testimonial for us. These really help us in future fundraising to bring you more and bigger programming!
