POSTPONED Wine By the Bay Grand Opening Party 10/6/11

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE.

Wine Boutique In A Fine Art Setting, Downtown Miami Grand Opening Party
Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Wine by the Bay
888 Biscayne Blvd., Suite 112
Miami, FL, 33132

Opens for business on September 28, 2011

Etra Fine Art gallery co-owner, Stefano Campanini will open a new business on September 28, Wine by the Bay. Wine by the Bay will be a fine wine and art boutique hosting an ever-changing art exhibition. The store boasts a sleek and sophisticated contemporary interior and magical terrace view of Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

The Wine by the Bay Grand Opening event will be on Thursday, October 6. Attendees will enjoy an evening designed to satisfy the palate and enlighten both the connoisseur and the curious. The opening night event will feature art by Mimmo Paladino, Emanuele Viscuso, Mario Velez, and Wilfredo Lam alongside a showcase of exceptional wine including Gaja, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Insigna. To learn more about Wine by the Bay or attend the grand opening event, email Stefano Campanini at info@winebtb.com or call (305) 491-8400.

After seven years running a successful contemporary art gallery with his wife Alicia Restrepo, Campanini has decided to merge his passion for art and wine and create a unique space that caters to the most seasoned wine collector, but also where the passerby will feel comfortable and at home.

“Besides everyday superior customer-oriented service and a unique selection of wines that suit every budget, I plan to hold regular art and wine tasting events that will both entertain and educate the community,” states Campanini. “Whereas in the Design District we deal with a select clientele, I am looking forward to offering something that everyone enjoys and in an environment where the art can be appreciated by many and in an unintimidating way. At art openings, wine is like a sideshow, but now, it will take center stage.”

Choosing the best wine to sell is a very selective process much like identifying great art. Campanini has personally tasted all of the wines that will make up the store’s inventory.

“I tried to have a selection of wines that represent the energetic location where I am,” says Campanini. “A selection that includes most of the Premiere Grand Cru from France and the finest Italian wines, but I also was in search of wines that are hidden treasures.” California wines are also well represented with a good selection of wines scoring more that 93 points by the two most reliable wine experts.

For the grand opening week, customers will be offered special discounts and incentives on all wines.

Located on 888 Biscayne Bay at the Marina Blue, Wine by the Bay overlooks the bay directly across from the American Airlines Arena. The 1200 square foot boutique will serve Miami’s downtown area and become a functional part of city’s new cultural identity and expansion efforts such as the Genting project, the Mikado Hotel, and the new Miami Art Museum.

Fashion Designer, Alex Hansam visited The Loft

I reunited with my long time friend Fashion Designer Alex Hansam this past friday. Alex, an arts lover and traveler, moved to miami from Dominican Republic and after designing for private clients in
Miami and NY launched her first line under her name in 2008. Alex Hansam is a fashion expert for “Despierta America” a daily morning show in Univision.

The vibrant energy of Miami keeps the designer in constant vanguardism, and is her use of fine fabrics and materials that keeps her clientele interested and growing.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotels Of Miami And Fort Lauderdale Harness The Power Of The Moon Launch Full Moon Series For 2011/2012 Season

As the social season (and cooler weather) approaches, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, South Beach and Fort Lauderdale will launch a new season of Full Moon gatherings, whose humble beginnings emanated from a history book describing Tequesta Indians naming Key Biscayne “Bischiyano,” which meant “favorite path of the rising moon” in their language.

Our romantic imaginations took off, and the Full Moon parties began. You have three soirees to choose from – all beautiful, with different, creative variations; some with mystical themes, one with a charitable component, and one with its own Constellation Concierge to point out the celestial sights in the heavens.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotels Of Miami And Fort Lauderdale Harness The Power Of The Moon Launch Full Moon Series For 2011/2012 Season

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami Moonrise Dinner Dates:
2011: November 10; December 10
2012: January 9, February 7, March 8, April 6, May 6, June 4
When the Tequesta Indians first landed on Key Biscayne’s idyllic shore, they named it “Bischiyano” (“Favorite Path of the Rising Moon,”) for its breathtaking natural phenomenon. The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami was so inspired by the monthly occurrence, it created “Moonrise dinners” at signature restaurant Cioppino to transport guests to the mystical past. With an ever-changing four-course menu from Italy’s gastronomic regions created by master Italian Chef Ezio Gamba, tabletop telescopes, and a Constellation Concierge, which is a private guide to the night sky that helps guests pinpoint celestial objects, including stars, planets, comets, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies, this is one of Miami’s best kept secret dinners. Well-priced at $60 per person / $90 per person with wine pairings (or the option to order from the Cioppino menu). (305-365-4286)

While The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami island location lends itself to romantic dinners under the stars, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach and The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale create party atmospheres. Both soirees are open to the public, have reduce-priced valet parking, cocktail & appetizer specials and the city’s top DJs spinning.

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, Oceanfront Dilido Beach Club
Legends of the Full Moon series, oceanfront, with oversized telescopes to watch the moon rising out of the Atlantic, and $10 light bites, specialty cocktails, décor, music and surprises to reflect the mystical qualities of each legend. One surprise: The DiLido happily takes table reservations, which are just that: a reservation to be seated without the obligation of pricey bottle service most clubs charge. (786-276-4008)
7-11 p.m.
October 15 Launch Party: Chang’e, Chinese Goddess of the Moon / $10 light bites, a live chef action station, specialty Lychee Lotus and Thai One On cocktails by Master Mixologist Ramsey Pimentel, Chinese ribbon dancer and more.

7-10 p.m.
September 13: From Russia with Love, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

About the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We do this by training activists, equipping state and local organizations with the skills needed to organize broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement’s premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Kim’s Good Karma Group, founded by Miami philanthropist Kimberly Shenker-Bacardi, is a charitable organization consisting of herself and like-minded friends dedicated to helping those less fortunate around the world. Ms. Bacardi became aware of the essential work that Food For The Poor (FFP) has undertaken in Haiti after witnessing her neighbor, Dr. Jules Cadet, tirelessly raise funds over the past few years for his countrymen. As Ms. Bacardi is well aware of how important fundraising is for any organization, she decided to go where her heart guided her. Kim’s Good Karma Group was born.

After visiting Haiti on a mission trip with Food For The Poor and The Florida Marlins, Ms. Bacardi recognized the need to help. She visited many of the FFP villages, orphanages, and facilities they constructed and witnessed the conditions most Haitians were living in. She was moved by her experiences so much that she decided that the first fundraising effort that Kim’s Good Karma Group (KGKG) would take on would be for for the construction of the Kim’s Good Karma Group Community Center within the Marlins’ Homes For Haiti Village, built by Food For The Poor.

The KGKG community center will be a multi-use facility, providing vocational training classes and community meetings, as well as offering a safe and sturdy shelter during hurricane season. “I am so excited for this opportunity because it does not stop here; the more money we raise, the more lives we can positively affect. The plans are to have a minimum of 25 homes, sanitation, a water source and community center. Our goal for the community center is $40,000, and the more we give, the more we can add to help more families with additional houses, solar lighting, and agriculture.” Kim remarked after her trip.

For information on how you can help KGKG or for interviews please contact goodkarmamiami@aol.com.

Food For The Poor is the third-largest international relief and development charity in the United States, feeding 2 million poor every day. Their Christian relief programs and projects are helping children and the poorest of the poor by providing food, housing, health care, education, water projects, emergency relief and micro-enterprise assistance in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Established in 1982 as a 501(c)(3) corporation, FFP’s goals are to improve the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children they serve. Food For The Poor raises funds and provides direct relief assistance to the poor, usually by purchasing specifically requested materials and distributing them through the churches and charity organizations already operating in areas of need.

SOBE Work Spaces opened its doors with a kick off party By Betty Alvarez

On August 5, SOBE Work Spaces held their open house/kick off party to the public as part of their Grand Opening celebration. Located in the heart of South Beach at 1680 Michigan Avenue, just off the famous Lincoln Road Mall, SOBE Work Spaces is South Beach’s first co working location. The lively space, inspired by the offices of tech giants Google and Facebook, is made up of 17,000 sqft of a modern, innovative work environment. Miami’s leading internet marketing company, SpiderBoost has already secured 5,000 sqft of office space. With floor to ceiling windows and a 360 degree view of South Beach this location has it all including the best technology available in the beach, free coffee, a lounge with an xbox, 3 conference rooms, a large kitchen and a fast paced high energy setting.

SOBE Work Spaces is Miami Beach’s first coworking location and it offers an alternative to the isolated environment of home offices and executive suites. Coworkers at SOBE Work Spaces benefit from interaction with fellow small business owners and a sense of community in which to share knowledge that often leads to new opportunities and discoveries otherwise unavailable in other work settings.

SOBE Work Spaces understands the challenges of today’s economy and provides state of the art shared workspace that helps their members meet those challenges. “Due to the changing economy and resultant job losses and career changes, the number of resourceful entrepreneurs, freelancers, self-employed individuals and contract workers has increased dramatically. We understand the needs of [these workers] and not only want to provide a fully functioning workspace, but also a professional environment in which they can thrive,” said Armando Martinez, President of SOBE Work Spaces.

The design of the overall space and the culture encourages the development of a sense of community. Members leasing space are still working independently, but they share values and are interested in the synergy that occurs from working among like-minded people in the same space. An instant network with fellow members is created giving them the opportunity to utilize or promote each others’ services.

SOBE Work Spaces offers an ideal coworking space with a mixture of open, shared working areas with dedicated desks for those looking to trade their home office or spot at the coffee shop for a professional work environment. There are also a number of dedicated desks that provide a greater level of privacy, yet still allow for interaction with coworkers. Well-appointed dedicated offices are another option for businesses requiring more privacy and storage. SOBE Work Spaces is also an excellent solution for virtual offices.

At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminary candles around the track in a moving ceremony honor cancer survivors as well as remembering those lost to the disease. It is an opportunity to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

The American Cancer Society encourages anyone wishing to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to attend the Relay For Life kick-off to find out more about the Relay for Life event in their community.

The Grand Opening of Dream South Beach was a Grandiose Affair By Betty Alvarez

With owners Sant Singh Chatwal and Vikram Chatwal, the grand opening of Dream South Beach Hotel was a spectacular event with many surprises. First, we were surprised as we made way at the red carpet with a fire eater as he did many tricks to the guests of the party and hotel guests. A glass of champagne awaited each guest as they were transported to the rooftop were the party was in full swing.

Guests were treated to cocktails and for this hot weather: cocktail popsicles which really gave a kick to the party. Appetizers from mini burgers to tuna tartar were served. By the lovely pool area, models gave a fire show in the water. It really wowed the guests. DJ mixes by Andrew and Andrew gave the crowd great vibes of today and yesteryear music.

It was an unforgettable summer social event.

In Sense Miami culminates their 2nd anniversary celebration with a whopper of a burger By Betty Alvarez

In Sense Miami Social Media Management celebrated their 2nd year anniversary and also their incorporation at 80z Burger Bar. Other than networking, guests had the opportunity to have a welcome drink with other drink and Happy hour menu specials.

However, the big thrill of the night was the gigantic burger that served as the “anniversary cake” Nobody ever seen such a huge burger and it was the talk of the event. 8oz burger bar introduced the burger challenge to guests and even passed out pamphlets indicating the rules of this challenge. This challenge should be on Man vs Food, it is the perfect item. The burgas was cut with a saw. That is how enormous it was.

All in all, guests enjoyed themselves with great networking and great burgers.

Joseph C. Grant Jr. presents his artwork with live jazz performance at Artway 66 by Betty Alvarez

On June 7, Joseph C. Grant Jr. presented a collection of his artwork at Artway 66 in Coconut Grove. Grant’s artwork embodies nostalgia with a figurative style of elongated human forms and vibrant colors. One of my favorite pieces was entitled Tango in Miami where the artwork showed that this city is one fun city to live in. His renderings depict life through the eyes of the black male in America by way of the Caribbean.

To accompany this spectacular artwork celebration, New York based Jazz quartet, Innovative Sounds, who played at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington DC provided the musical atmosphere for the evening.

The cocktail hour was sponsored in part by TOMA Vodka and featured Joseph’s signature drink: The “Chocolate Eyez Martini”

Artway 66 is located at 2911 Grand Avenue, Ste. 400D in Coconut Grove. Please visit www.artway66.com

Hello Friends! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! We want to make sure Mashable.com lists MIAMI as on of the Top 10 Social Media Day MeetUp’s!!

(via Mashable.com) Join us Thursday June 30th as we acknowledge and celebrate the revolution of media becoming social. A day that honors the technological and societal advancements that have allowed us to have a dialogue, to connect and to engage not only the creators of media, but perhaps more importantly, one another.

It’s a day to celebrate the changes in media that have empowered us to stay connected to information in real time, the tools that have enabled us to communicate from miles apart, and the platforms that have given a voice to the voiceless and victims of protest injustice. It’s a revolution worth celebrating. Today, we celebrate Social Media Day and we hope you’ll join us.

So how do you participate? Being social, of course. You can do this online by tracking the social updates in various ways as listed below, or you can make some connections offline by attending an event near you. There are more than 600+ meetups in 93 countries today with thousands of attendees. As far as we know, there is no official holiday dedicated to social media. We think it deserves a day of it’s own, and what better way to celebrate than to connect with your local social media community?

How To Participate in Social Media Day
*Meetup Everywhere Mashable: Sign up to attend an event on the Meetup Everywhere Mashable.
*Watch the live streams worldwide: We’ll be updating throughout the day.
*Tweet: Use the #smday hashtag on Twitter. With so many participating, we should be a trending topic on Twitter on June 30. Also, we’ll soon be announcing a prize for those that tweet or post to Facebook.
*Add the Social Media Day Twitter theme from TweetyGotBack to your account in support of the day.
*Follow @mashSMday: Follow @mashSMday on Twitter for updates and developments on the celebration.
*Comment via Facebook: Go to Smday.com and leave a comment either promoting your meetup or tell us what you’re doing for your event.

United Way Miami Wine and Food Festival launches Bacardi’s 60 Second Cocktails, a monthly series By Betty Alvarez

In April, the United Way Miami Wine & Food Festival experienced record-breaking ticket sales and sold out events. To meet popular demand, the festival launched a series of year-round wine and food events – all for a good cause. 60 Second Cocktails with Bacardi is the kick-off event marking the expansion, and all proceeds benefited United Way of Miami-Dade’s work in education, financial stability and health.

On June 16, guests brushed up on their bartending skills and learned how to make delicious cocktails, with help from Bacardi mixologist and Miami-native, Gabe Urrutia who is an expert in the cocktail trend of molecular mixology. He taught guests how to make a balanced cocktail from a blend of unique ingredients in just 60 seconds.

A Bacardi Bar cocktail reception followed where guests enjoyed cocktails, appetizers, music, a special gift and exclusive entry to the private Emilio Bacardi Company Museum, not open to the general public. The museum showcases historical photos and memorabilia dating back to the 1860s, a recount of the company’s evolution, how Bacardi adopted its world famous “Bat” trademark, and much more.

Tapas & Tintos, the acclaimed restaurant located in the heart of South Beach on the famed Espanola Way, celebrates the opening of their second location in Midtown Miami.

On Thursday, June 23rd, one of Miami’s long-standing traditions, Tapas & Tintos, will welcome South Florida’s VIPs to an exclusive Spanish Carnival-themed event to celebrate the restaurant’s newest venture, Tapas & Tintos Midtown.

Live entertainment will include Flamenco dancers and fire jugglers that will be performing jaw-dropping, fiery tricks throughout the night.

All guests onsite will be able to watch the spell-binding ritual and be able to try some of the exotic blend.

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at fundarte.us or tix.com or by calling (800) 595-4849.

For additional information about the event or the festival, call 305.910.7898. Mary D. Events hosts a Women’s Reception prior to the screening of the film, CRACKS, an official selection of the Toronto and London BFI Film Festivals. Crushes, “cracks” in British slang, and jealousies are the ruling passions of this beautifully realized debut film from Jordan Scott, daughter of the legendary director Ridley Scott.

Set in a 1930s-era isolated English all-girls boarding school on the eve of WWII, CRACKS starts “Bond-girl” Eva Green in a blistering performance as “Miss G,” a glamorous teacher who is idolized as the coach of the cliquish student diving team. When she suddenly turns her attention to a beautiful, new teen from Spain, all bets are off. The film evokes a by-gone era as well as the very real erotic and emotional tensions between young women of any decade.

There will be additional screenings of CRACKS through June 16th. Full schedule and theatre info at www.gablescinema.com.

Base Paint The Auction– A contemporary Art Auction and Curated Exhibition By Betty Alvarez

BASE PAINT | THE AUCTION is a contemporary art auction event and curated exhibitoin to help raise funds to support the secondary school at L’Athletique D’ Haiti where Base Paint tent will be installed.

On May 25, Ideobox Artspace, SaludArte Foundation, Fundación Manos del Sur, Step by Step Foundation, and Curators Antuan & Tanya Brillembourg joined forces as they prepared for Base Paint | The Auction event to benefit the Base Paint Project. The tents have arrived in Haiti and will be installed this summer as part of a secondary school on the property of L’Athletique d’Haiti. The funds raised helped to finance the new school’s operational costs and ensure the continuation of the work that was begun with the Base Paint Tents.

Base Paint | The Auction featured over 45 artists that have generously donated works of art to help raise these funds. For a list of artists and auction pieces, visit www.basepaint.org. On hand to set the vibe was famed band Miami City Mix and later in the evening DJ Umber Bandi-Ville was mixing beats. Artist Leni Ibarguengoytia unveiled her event installation on crate boxes which will act as lounge areas. Bacardi cocktails were served to quench the thirst of those who savored Diego’s Andalucia Tapas & Deli’s paella and Zucchero Ristorante Bistro’s hors d’oeuvres. Robert Duval, founder of L’Athletique d’Haiti, was at the auction to announce a special thank you to everyone who participated in the project including the artists, sponsors and volunteers. For more information on the foundation, visit www.lathletiquedhaiti.org.

The artwork will be on view at Ideobox Artspace until June 30, 2011 on Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturdays by appointment. For appointments, please contact Alexandra Gauthier at 305.576.9878 or alexandragauthier@ideobox.com.

Marriott Biscayne Bay was christened amongst the VIP crowd By Betty Alvarez

Marriott Biscayne Bay, one of Miami’s long standing landmarks was the place for guests to witness the realization of a $31 million dollar renovation on May 17. Noted as “the bridge to everything Miami,” this hotel is right in the middle of every popular area in Miami: Downtown, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Design District, etc.

As one entered the hotel, lovely hostesses greet you and indicated to proceed to the outside area were the celebration was. Upon entering the area overlooking the beautiful blue Miami waters, guests were treated to cocktails and food ranging from Paella, pulled pork sandwiches and pull pork on top of tostones. In the middle, where was a raw bar shaped boat with oyters and shrimp to the delight of the guests. In the dessert area, a sumptuous array of mini delicacies awaited you such as mini cheesecake, chocolate on a stick, coffee flavored indulgence etc. Libations and delicacies were provided by Catch Grill and Bar.

One big moment in the event was the actual christening of the Marriott Biscayne Bay which the general manager broke the champagne bottle on top of the rail marking the beginning of more years to come for this landmark hotel.

Congratulations to a great hotel!

Gen Art’s celebrated their relaunch and Perriet Jouet’s 200th Anniversary By Betty Alvarez

The great news of the comeback of GenArt’s relaunch couldn’t make people happier. Even though there will be a limited programming in Miami as the company focuses to relaunch in New York and Los Angeles, Miami will take anything that Gen Art proposes in events. It is expected that Gen Art will have more of events as the year progresses with definitely something during the ever popular international event, Art Basel.

In conjunction with Gen Art’s relaunch, it was Perrier Jouet’s 200th anniversary. What better way to celebrate it at Soho House in Miami Beach. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy cocktails made by Perriet Jouet and toasting the celebration of the bicentennial and for creating a living legacy.

Coral Gables

Benefit (via voluntary donations and raffle) The Coral Gables Museum. For more information: Designhouse: www.designhousegroup.com |Novecento: www.novecento.com |Coral Gables Museum: www.CoralGablesMuseum.org.

Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez possess two different backgrounds and two sets of career paths. Yet, this duo has combined their talents and individual skill sets to create a dynamic and unique brand: Designhouse. Coral Gables will officially welcome Designhouse, a boutique web, print, and brand design agency to the City Beautiful and the business community overall on Thursday, May 26, 2011. The by invitation event will take place at Novecento located at 121 Alhambra Plaza #100 Coral Gables from 6:30pm-9:30pm with a presentation by Coral Gables Chamber president Mark A. Trowbridge, John ORourke III, chairman and Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason.

Novecento Coral Gables will be the location for this fabulous event taking place next week. Guests can expect to enjoy delicious Novecento hors de oeuvres, Chambord Vodka and Barcelo cocktails, lounge music by DJ Mayner who will create a relaxed vibe while guests network, engage and interact. For those interested in an outdoor smoke, Extravaganza Cigars will be rolling fresh cigars on the terrace. This popular eatery is a perfect location for this to-do as Designhouse is also located in the lovely Alhambra Plaza.

As described by the founders, Designhouse is a boutique web, print, and brand design agency. When asked about their new venture, they both smiled and responded: If you can dream it we can create it. Websites, logos, e-marketing, and branding are attacked with a holistic approach to give their clients a leg above the competition. This one-two punch power house design team takes pride in offering clients the personal touch which is what they feel has been missing in the creative world for a long while. The like-minded professionals met, and felt there was a void in the business community. They noticed growing changes and needs in the marketplace as well as a rising trend, a preference for working with boutique firms and local based ones more often times than not. The reason given by proprietors was simple, to get the service that was once paramount in a relationship with an agency but somehow lost during the last few years. Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez felt they had the perfect recipe as they both poses mind blowing talent combined with easy going personalities that fit the boutique style of business.

Designhouse was a concept born from change in the business world. Specifically, Rodriguez and Vias saw that they could provide top agency work and A1 service without charging clients large agency retainers. They have created a structure where the client will be able to gain strategic solutions, visuals and the marketing tools needed to set their company and brand apart from the rest while keeping a solid understanding of that clients budget and long term goals.

With a great network of partners that are scattered across the map, these ladies have created a unique business model to service clients outside of South Florida. Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez welcome you to their home, Designhouse.

Fadó Irish Pub And Restaurant 80’s theme Pub Quiz 5/17/11

Fadó Irish Pub And Restaurant Plays Up Pub Quiz With New Themes
Tuesday, May 17th, 9 p.m. to midnight
Every Tuesday
Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant
900 South Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33130

Boddingtons, Boxtys and Brains – some just have it all!

Bringing a 40-year-old European gaming tradition to Mary Brickell Village, Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant has injected yet another dose of pub culture in Miami. Every Tuesday night, Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant hosts a weekly pub quiz tournament to test guests’ trivia knowledge and compete against other teams for a variety of prizes offered throughout the night — and to take home the title of pub quiz champion!

On Tuesday, May 17th, Fado introduces a new theme to game night… the 80’s. Guests will need to brush up on their knowledge of Cyndi Lauper, 16 Candles and scrunchies as questions will test their knowledge of pop culture from the 1980’s.

Upon arrival, guests receive a pamphlet of answer sheets to set up teams for eight rounds of trivia. After each round of 10 questions, sheets are brought back up to a designated scorer who tallies up correct answers per each team and inputs them into a spreadsheet that is displayed on one of the pubs flat-screens so teams know their standing after each set. For round winners, a bonus question is offered by the “quiz master” to the top three teams for the opportunity to win additional points or prizes. At the end of the last round, a final tally totaling all of the scores from each round is conducted to determine the quiz victors and to reveal their ultimate prize. To make the game even more challenging, all electronic devices are prohibited from the pub quiz area to keep from having easy access to answers.

In between each round, guests enjoy music courtesy of the pub’s onsite DJ from 8 p.m. to midnight, and take advantage of Fadó’s extensive European draught beer selection including Boddingtons Pub Ale, Harp, Smithwick’s, Hoegaarden, as well as a variety of imported bottled beers, whiskey and scotch offerings, domestic wines and signature cocktails. Guests are also invited to pair their “liquid courage” with some delicious bites from Fadó’s dinner menu as the full menu will be available until midnight and offers tempting options such as the Guinness BBQ Wings, Smithwick’s Mini Burgers, Fish and Chips, Pulled Lamb Sandwich, Smoked Salmon Bites, Cheese Dip and Wedges and more.

Welcome and Opening: Cristina Barrios, Consul General of Spain
Presentation: Joaquín Roy, Director EU Center, University of Miami

CCEMiami, The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, a partnership with Florida International University, and the Jean Monnet Chair of the University of Miami, cordially invite you to the book presentation: Spain in the European Union: The First 25 Years (1986-2011)

“Spain is the problem. Europe is the solution”. In this fashion Ortega y Gasset once dramatized the need to “Europeanize” Spain. The results over the first twenty five years of EU membership have been truly impressive. When Spain became a member of the EC, some of the best and brightest of Spain’s governmental cadres and universities joined the expanded European institutions, taking on positions of responsibility. Spain, in sum, “was not different”, contrary to what old-fashion tourist publicity for the country used to say. It was a European country that was returning to its natural home after a long exile. Spain received considerable benefits from EU membership. From an index of 60 percent of the European average in 1986, today Spain’s income per head is in the range of 105 percent, with some regions surpassing 125 percent. From being a country that was a net receiver from the EU budget, Spain today is a net contributor. Reflecting this development, the present volume examines different dimensions of the deepening relationship between Spain and the rest of Europe through membership of the EU (its history, and its impact on policy development on economic growth and on relations with third countries). + info www.ccemiami.org
