Influential alternative rock icons Primus bring their first ever 3D enhanced live concert to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre on Saturday, November 10, 2012 / 8PM, Tickets go on sale Friday, August 3rd / 10AM. This is part of the Cruzan Concert Series.

Primus is excited to announce a unique 3D tour this fall, featuring two sets per evening. Being that this is the first-ever traveling 3D-enhanced live musical performance, this groundbreaking tour is sure to provide a one-of-a-kind psychedelic experience, further enhanced by the fact that every show will also feature Quad Surround Sound. Primus’ latest album, Green Naugahyde, was produced and engineered by Les Claypool in his personal studio. Green Naugahyde expands on Primus’ incomparable sound and also sees them bringing it into the next millennium. It is a cerebral and complex album that, like all of the band’s output, is teeming with the band’s signature blend of whimsy and underlying darkness. For the past 27 years, Primus have followed in the footsteps of boundary-pushing artists like Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd to create some of the most original and inventive music in existence.

– June 15 – Jason Hainsworth Quartet
Saxophonist Jason Hainsworth will perform with piano, upright bass and drums. Concert will feature both original compositions and jazz standards in a swinging, modernjazz style.

– June 29 – Brian Murphy Trio
The Brian Murphy trio, consisting of Murphy on piano, John Yarling on drums and Chuck Bergeron on bass. The will be performing both original materials and selections from the American Songbook.

– July 13 Fernando Ulibarri Quartet
Guitarist/composer Fernando Ulibarri will perform with a quartet consisting of piano, bass, drums and guitar. Original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards will be showcased that evening.

– July 27 – Gary Campbell/Mike Gerber Duo
Two of the most respected musicians in South Florida, saxophonist Campbell and pianist Gerber will be performing both original compositions and jazz standards.

The ever-popular happy hour and jazz night kicks off on June 15 with a performance by Jason Hainsworth Quartet, featuring both original compositions and jazz standards in a swinging, modern jazz style. This quartet emphasizes contemporary jazz while recognizing the rich history of jazz ensembles. Saxophonist Jason Hainsworth will perform with the piano, upright bass and drums. Since his childhood in Houston, Texas, Hainsworth has forged his talents performing professionally in New Orleans, Atlanta and New York, where he performed with and learned from many of today’s Jazz luminaries, including Ellis Marsallis, Victor Goines, Todd Coolman, Gary Smulyan, Marcus Printup, Wycliff Gordon, Kevin Bales, Rodney Jordan, Bill Peterson, Russell Gunn, and Leon Anderson, to name a few. In addition to his outstanding and memorable performances, Hainsworth is a talented composer and an inspiring educator. While performing with his own quartet, he continues to cultivate a vibrant jazz program as the Director of Jazz Ensembles and saxophone instruction at Broward Community College in Davie, Florida.

On June 29, the series continues with the Brian Murphy Trio. With Brian Murphy on piano, John Yarling on drums and Chuck Bergeron on bass, the group will perform both original materials and selections from the American Songbook. Murphy is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and arranger who has recorded and performed extensively in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and the United States with many of the world’s renowned Jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Buddy DeFranco, Diana Krall, PaquitoD’Rivera, Woody Shaw, Dave Liebman, Bob Berg, Wycliffe Gordon and Duffy Jackson, along with Blues greats Jimmy Witherspoon, Albert Collins and Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson.

The Fernando Ulibarri Quartet will follow on July 13 with guitarist and composer Fernando Ulibarri, who will be accompanied by the piano, bass and drums in a performance featuring original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards. An active performer, composer and educator in the South Florida music scene, Ulibarri moved from his native Costa Rica to Boston where he graduated from Berklee College of Music. After working professionally in the New England area, he moved to Miami to attend FIU where he earned a Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance.

The series will conclude on July 27 with a performance by the Gary Campbell/Mike Gerber Duo. Two of the most respected musicians in South Florida, saxophonist Campbell and pianist Gerber perform both original compositions and jazz standards. Gary Campbell is a saxophonist and composer who began his musical career in his hometown of Indianapolis where he was introduced to the “Naptown” jazz community. After brief stints in Miami and Indiana, Campbell migrated to New York City where he was active in the innovative, energetic and notorious loft scene in the 60’s and 70’s. Gary is now a well-recognized and sought-after jazz education in both the United States and Europe. Campbell has presented original works with artists John Abercrombie, Jan Hammer, Michael Moore, Bobby Moses and many others. Campbell’s counterpart, Mike Gerber, began playing the piano at just two and a half years-old and has continued to wow audiences as a legally blind performer for 50 years. After devoting his youth to performing classical music around his native St. Louis, Missouri, Gerber discovered jazz in his late teens and developed a love for improvisation that flourishes today. A mainstay in the South Florida jazz community off since 1969, Gerber is admired for his dazzling, speedy bursts.

Tonight, we are presenting Symbiotic Simians, a Miami-based experimental band working with electronics and Carlos Dominguez, a young computer music composer from FIU. In the fall 2012, Carlos will attend Dartmouth College to pursue an M.F.A. in Digital Musics. Most recently, Carlos performed at Miami’s PAX with the seasoned vocalist Jill Burton. Tonight’s performance, On That Note derives from percussion, found sounds and chaotic systems.

Orchestra Miami concludes its series of Free Outdoor Concerts, with “Beethoven on the Beach”, a celebration of the lives of heroic men. This concert is presented as a gift to the community, and is completely free of charge. The concert is co-sponsored by the Miami Salon Group, the City of Miami Beach and BB&T Bank.

This final outdoor performance will be presented on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 PM, at the newly renovated North Shore Park Bandshell (also known as the “73rd Street Bandshell”), located at 7250 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The venue is situated in the south part of the beautiful North Shore Park. There are bleacher-style seats available, and there is plenty of green space for guests to bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Picnicking is encouraged and beverages will be available for purchase.

The program includes Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute”, Lee Hoiby’s “I Have a Dream” featuring Graham Fandrei as the baritone soloist, and Beethoven’s iconic Symphony #5 in c minor, Op. 67. All three performances will be conducted by Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director, Elaine Rinaldi.

This year’s theme, “Beethoven on the Beach”, makes the connection between Beethoven and Civil Rights through the Age of Enlightenment. “For me, these concerts are about community”, says Artistic Director Rinaldi. “It makes me very happy to be able to bring people together to enjoy our gorgeous weather and share in the experience of listening to high quality classical music. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce your children to the excitement of live classical music.”
