Little Havana Social Club Returns with Miami Debut of Septeto Santiaguero

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, re-ignites it’s starlit social dance series, the Little Havana Social Club, with the Miami debut of Septeto Santiaguero–direct from Cuba–at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14.

“What better way to bring back the series than with this historic band, indulging us with their rich musical tradition that has influenced so many in this community,” says Jessica Gloria, Manager of the Koubek Center. “Our goal is to make this series at the Koubek Center into a place of gathering for Latin music and dance enthusiasts. There is already a tremendous buzz in the neighborhood.”

The Latin Grammy- and Cubadisco- winning group Septeto Santiaguero developed their signature sound at the famous Casa de la Trova nightclub in Santiago de Cuba–the cradle of son and bolero. Their balance of tradition with experimentation has sparked collaborations with salsa stars like José Alberto “El Canario” and Rubén Blades. This show marks their Miami debut and their premiere U.S. tour.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts and dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables, each evening featuring vibrant live bands, pre-concert dance lessons, and community vendors. Situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion, the performances are preceded by a complimentary dance lesson, and followed by an afterparty with a DJ. Specialty food and cocktails are available for purchase.

Coming events in the series include an Argentine Valentine’s Milonga with Argot Tango Quintet on February 18; Puerto Rican bomba and plena by Plena Es on March 25; and Afro-Colombian Rhythms from Herencia de Timbiqui on April 22.

About Septeto Santiaguero
Septeto Santiaguero was founded in 1995, as a number of young musicians from other septets, such as Sones de Oriente or Septeto Luz, joined the famous Melodías de Ayer and Fernando Dewar, a tres player, took over the leadership. Seeking to return to their roots, they decided to give up the mambos and stick to the discipline of the traditional septet – guitar, tres, bongo, clave, maracas, acoustic bass and trumpet–with the addition of the drum, which they retained in honor of Arsenio Rodríguez. In the Santiago de Cuba style, the two singers maintain the first and second harmony with equal emphasis.

Despite the fact that the group is eight in number, they retained the name Septeto Santiaguero because of the way they perform the son, the bolero, the guaracha, the guajira, and the guaguancó, which are completely rooted in the septeto sound. Together they have a created a group which preserves and pays homage to one of Cuba’s most important musical forms, with a vitality demonstrating that the septeto tradition is still fresh and alive in Santiago de Cuba today.

About The Koubek Center
The Koubek Center–su casa de cultura– is an intellectual, cultural, and community hub in the heart of Little Havana. A historic landmark in South Florida, the revitalized mansion remains true to its pioneering heritage–celebrating its multicultural community with workshops, art exhibitions, theater performances, literary readings, concerts and more. In addition to the mansion, the iconic space includes glorious gardens, the Koubek theater, the ArtSpace gallery, classrooms, and mini performance spaces.

The programs of Koubek Center are made possible with the generous support of: Miami Dade College; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council; the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissionaires; the State of Florida, Department of State , Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts; and the John S. and James L. South Florida JAZZ presents the renowned New York Standards Quartet on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 7:45 PM at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Four jazz master musicians formed the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) in 2006. The concept was a straightforward one: play jazz standards in a unique way. After performing a lot of original music they thought it would be liberating to play music based on conventional, standard jazz tunes that they had grown up playing. The band has been touring and developing together for more than ten years, and it definitely shows in the empathetic cohesion of the players. Audiences respond well to familiar music that is fresh sounding, accessible, and hard-swinging.

ARTISTIC PERSONNEL
Tim Armacost – tenor & soprano saxophones, flute
David Berkman – piano
Ugonna Okegwo – acoustic bass
Gene Jackson – drums

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

Masters of Sound Artists

6:00 Pm / Byrdipop, Miami, FL
I’m in a love/hate relationship with music. I’m pro hi-hat control and anti “loudness”.

7:30 Pm / True Vine, Miami, FL
True Vine is a Miami-based Christian DJ project inspired by the New Testament. He shares a divine vision of music that pulls from ancient Hebrew influences with an apocalyptic, biblical, and prophetic sound.

9:00 Pm / Helado Negro, Brooklyn, NY
Brooklyn-based producer-singer Roberto Lange has earned a wealth of recent acclaim for Private Energy, his fifth album as Helado Negro, including glowing reviews from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and more. He began producing in the 2000s under the alias Epstein, collaborating with fellow electronic visionaries Prefuse 73, Julianna Barwick and Sinkane. Existentially occupying the ether between Ecuadorian and American identity, Lange solidifies his ethnic pride and his experimental legacy on Private Energy, tinkering with South American folk and electro-pop palettes. He’s also gotten ample attention (and sometimes befuddlement) from summer festival-goers thanks to his shaggy, glittering “Tinsel Mammals” dance crew. Designed with the help of his wife, artist Kristi Sword, his on-stage assistants look like Cousin Itt hitting the glitter. – Rolling Stone

10:30 Pm / Jacques Renault, Brooklyn, NY
Jacques is a DJ and producer from the Washington, D.C. area who lives and works in Brooklyn. He runs Let’s Play House, a raving house, disco, and techno party as well as an imprint of the same persuasion, with friend and partner, Nik Mercer. He owns three plants, a rotary mixer, thousands of records, and a similar number of T-shirts. Despite working within the confines of a different genre, Dischord Records is still probably his favorite label.

Saludarte Foundation And Mana Contemporary Present Viola Meets Mozart

Saludarte Foundation And Mana Contemporary Present Viola Meets Mozart
November 29th
MANA Wynwood
318 NW 23rd St
Miami, FL 33127

World-renowned artists Bill Viola and famous violinist Julian Rachlin come together in one of the year’s most significant performances of Miami Art Week. Viola Meets Mozart is the result of the collaboration of the SaludArte Foundation and MANA Contemporary.

Arguably the most important contemporary video artists of our time, Bill Viola’s work focuses on fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and the different aspects of consciousness. Viola Meets Mozart will feature Inverted Birth, a piece where Viola depicts five stages of awakening through a series of violent transformation and is accompanied by critically acclaimed violinist Julian Rachlin, who together with the PhilarMIA Orchestra will play movements I, II and III of Mozart’s 5th Violin Concerto. Spanish dancer Jesus Pastor will be performing an original choreography in this piece. All this will be performed under the artistic direction of Pablo Mielgo.

Viola Meets Mozart brings together a group of leading artists of different disciplines. Bill Viola is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading artists and is credited as instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art, helping in the expansion of its scope in terms of technology, content and historical reach. Over the last 27 years, Julian Rachlin has been captivating audiences around the world and it is now considered one of the most exciting and respected musicians around the world. He has collaborated on many animations and with artists such as John Malkovich. Jesus Pastor, the founder of the “Human Dance Project,” is a classically trained dancer with a long-standing career that has taken him around the world. The artistic direction of the piece fell under Pablo Mielgo, who is not only the artistic and music director of the SaludArte Foundation but also the music director and co-artistic director of the Baleares Symphony Orchestra and the Medellin Philharmonic Academy.
“I am honored to be part of this amazing project and also thankful for the opportunity of working alongside Bill Viola, Jesus Pastor, the PhilarMia Orchestra and, of course, Pablo Mielgo. This is an exciting event taking place at an exciting time: the most important art fair in the hemisphere,” explained Julian Rachlin.

Viola Meets Mozart will be part of the MANA Wynwood’s space offerings during Miami Art Week. Additionally, in the space will be The Global South Visions and Revisions, Selections of the Brillembourg Capriles Collection, an exhibit curated by Adriana Herrar and Adolfo Wilson that proposes different revisions of the continent’s geometric abstraction. This exhibit is also a collaboration between the SaludArte Foundation and MANA Contemporary. PINTA Miami also returns to MANA Wynwood and celebrates its 10th year anniversary by expanding the project to include galleries from around the globe while maintaining a conceptual dialogue across all cultures, connecting Latin America to the rest of the world.

MANA Contemporary is one of the United States’ largest and most innovative contemporary art organizations. Mana offers exceptional services, spaces, and programming through its integrated architectural design for the greater creative community. Originally built in 1890, its rapidly expanding flagship location in Jersey City will eventually contain a footprint of more than two million square feet.

“To be part of one of the world’s most important art scenarios, as is Miami Art Week, is for us a milestone that allows us to grow and continue spreading the word about our mission of facilitating inclusive artistic processes that promote positive social change and integration. Much like Inverted Birth depicts the life cycle from birth to death, we want to be part of an individual’s transformation when exposed to art,” said Tania Capriles Brillembourg, Founder and Director of SaludArte Foundation.
On November 29th, MANA Wynwood will kick off Miami Art Week with Viola Meets Mozart, followed by the opening of PINTA Miami, in tandem with the opening of The Global South, Visions and Revisions: Selections from The Brillembourg Capriles Collection. For more information on the SaludArte Foundation activities during Miami Art Week, please visit www.saludarte.org.

South Florida JAZZ presents the Benny Green Trio Saturday December 3 at 8 PM at the Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd in Davie.

Benny Green possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Combine mastery of keyboard technique with decades of real world experience playing with no one less than the most celebrated artists of the last half century, and it’s no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Since emerging under the tutelage of Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard and Ray Brown in the early 1980s, Benny Green has become a highly regarded pianist and bandleader. His efforts to expand upon the language of the classical jazz canon have placed him not only among the best interpreters but also among the vanguard of musicians keeping jazz’s evolution going.

Tickets are $40 ($10 for students with ID 90 min before the show) at southfloridajazz.org or call 954-462-0222. Parking is free above the 1st floor.

A FEW TIPS…
— BUY YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE ONLINE – Space is very limited to only 500 people… Door tickets (if this event is not sold out in advance) will be higher.
— SPEND TIME TO FIGURE OUT AND DESIGN YOUR COSTUMES – One of the most important elements of the success of this party is Audience Participation (That means YOU!!!). What could you create to stand apart from everybody else… Hmmmm??? Get creative!!!
— ARRIVE EARLY – The last thing you want to experience on Halloween Night is standing in a long line while wearing a Costume. Although we will be moving the line quickly, we cannot make magic happen when hundreds of people all show up at the same time… Also, you will have less of a walk to make from your Parking spot to the venue… Again, Get there early!!!

There will be live music, food and entertainment, as well as plenty of Cuba’s first and most-iconic beer, Cerveza La Tropical, La Original, which has been available exclusively in the Social Hall since its much ballyhooed relaunch in May.

October 1 at 8 PM: The Arts Garage presents the legendary tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis. Ellis is a well-known American musician who was an essential part of James Brown’s band in 1960s and its musical director. A student of Sonny Rollins, he is a saxophonist, arranger and composer. Music, particularly jazz, is his passion. In 1965, he started working with James Brown and became a part of some hit projects like “Cold Sweat”, “Mother Popcorn”, “Lickin’ Stick,” and “The Chicken” in a short period of 4 years. Subsequently he worked with artists like George Benson, Hank Crawford, Esther Phillips, and David Liebman. He later worked with Van Morrison’s band as arranger and music director and fully deserves the credit for major hits of that time. His song with James Brown, “Say It Loud: I’m Black and I’m Proud”, is a source of inspiration for all black people, and truly expresses their mind and heart. The song reflects his self-respect and truly reflects the political and social awakening that started during that time that led them to fight for their basic rights. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to announce Conjunto Progreso as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. This long-established Cuban Son ensemble has charmed audiences everywhere with their ability to transport audiences to a nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Co-founded by Johnny Aguiló and Jose Elias in 1999, the group has since grown from a quartet to a group of nine members.

Through the many years of performing, Conjunto Progreso displays an array of legendary artists including Johnny’s father Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Congrego Luis Miranda, and bassist extraordinaire Eddie “GUA GUA” Rivera of the renowned group Batacumbele. Their familiarity on stage spans back to many major orchestras and musical associations in Cuba.

Their anticipated debut album titled “Masters of Cuban Son” was released in 2004. The record showcased an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers and astonishing arrangements from several members of the group. Their music is so widely acclaimed by the American public that they were honored with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album.

The galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is delighted to announce this month’s musical performance by the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Jazz Band’s name “Dixieland” is a name bestowed to the style of jazz performed by early New Orleans jazz musicians. This is one of the earliest styles of jazz music and the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band is the leading band devoted to this genre of music. The style combines earlier brass band marches, French Quadrilles, beguine, ragtime, and similar styles to achieve this unique style of music.

While instrumentation and the size of the bands may vary, the “standard” band comprises a “front line” of trumpet, trombone, and clarinet; and the “rhythm section” of either guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, or piano and drums. This intricate jazz sound of music is kept alive by a handful of dedicated bands.

The MOCA galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.
