Museum of Contemporary Art
770 NE 125th Street,
North Miami, Florida 33161
Website

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to welcome back Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series on Friday, Dec. 27. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul. Their repertoire includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia, legendary Miami bassist/composer; Chino Nunez, GRAMMY Award-winning producer; and Jaui Schneider, former pianist/composer of Ray Barretto; along with classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauzá.

The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among others.

The public is invited to enjoy the vibrant sounds of Miami Big Sound Orchestra, rain or shine. Guests may also walk through MOCA’s two exhibitions, Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” and Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations.” Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” traces the Chilean artist’s career-long commitment to exploring discarded and displaced materials, peoples and landscapes in a time of global climate change. The late French-Mexican surrealist painter Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations” aims to contribute to the scholarship and recognition of under-explored women artists, and to the intercultural influences on European artists in exile in the Americas, whose work was often deeply marked by indigenous and archaic cultures. Both exhibitions are on view from Nov. 26 through March 29, 2020.

This holiday season, he is returning to his hometown to personally celebrate and release his new track, “Feliz Navidad.” with The Cris Cab Christmas Experience performances on November 27th at Bodega in Miami Beach.

Cris Cab, the wildly popular singer, songwriter and instrumentalist has taken on the challenge to fuse his native Miami style with the winter-time staple song of the season, “Feliz Navidad.” Cab’s Reggae and Latin sound enhances the original 1970’s hit, originally recorded by Puerto Rican icon, Jose Feliciano. Feliciano himself instantly gave his blessing after listening to the song firsthand, the single will be released on Friday, November 29 via Spotify. At the same time, the Prince of Miami is set to embark on a series of performances and events bringing “The Cris Cab Christmas Experience” to life in Miami introducing the track directly to his fans, the only approved version of the classic in its almost 50-year history.

Cab hails from Miami, Florida and has characterized his career by embracing his family’s Latin roots and creating a unique blend of sounds that could only come from growing up in one of the most multicultural cities in the nation. As an artist, he has combined reggae, Latin, pop, and soulful instrumentals throughout his discography. In addition to his unique sound, Cab’s live performance is an experience like no other, showcasing his six-piece band encompassed by world-class musicians.

Growing up, Cris Cab, identified his passion for music at an early age. At the age of 15, Cab became the protégé of one of the most influential figures in pop culture, Pharrell Willams. Since that life-changing moment, he has had the privilege of working and collaborating with award-winning artists such as Marc Anthony, J.Balvin, Big Sean, Mike Posner, Wyclef, B.o.B, and Farruko. He’s also had the chance to share the stage nationwide with Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Lorde, and others. With his diverse recordings, Cab has become the new face of fusion, interpolating Latin, reggae and hip-hop styles to represent the true soul of Miami.

Cab has accomplished many of his childhood dreams, in an increasingly competitive and diverse field of young artists.

Jazz at MOCA to Feature Pianist Kiki Sanchez on Nov. 29
Friday, 11/29/2019 – 08:00 pm –
Museum of Contemporary Art
770 NE 125th Street,
North Miami, Florida 33161
Website
Cost: Free

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is presenting Afro-Peruvian producer, composer, arranger, educator and pianist Kiki Sanchez as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series on Friday, Nov. 29. Sanchez is among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene.

Sanchez blends smooth Latin Jazz with a perfect balance of tropical Afro-Peruvian rhythm and jazz harmonies for a high energy performance. Born in Lima, Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11 and later moved to Miami, FL, where he continued studying piano and cultivating a deep love for American Jazz music. Sanchez holds a master’s degree in Classical Composition from Florida Atlantic University.

Sanchez has had the opportunity to play with Jazz legends such as Jim Gasior, Cachao, Mike Gerber, Arturo Sandoval and more. Sanchez has collaborated on GRAMMY-nominated albums including Best Instrumental Album, “Blown Away” with Frankie Marcos and Arturo Sandoval and Best Traditional Tropical Album, “La Onda Latina” with Frankie Marcos and Clouds. He also worked closely with well-known, GRAMMY award-winning producer, Glen Kolotin on numerous projects.

Sanchez has released two Latin Jazz albums, “Dreams” in 2007 and “Two Worlds” in 2011 featuring GRAMMY award-winner Susana Baca. As an educator, he has released an instructional DVD titled the “The Real Latin Piano and Intro to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms, Vol.1.”

The public is invited to enjoy the vibrant sounds of Kiki Sanchez, rain or shine. To kick off Miami Art Week, guests may also walk through MOCA’s two exhibitions, Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” and Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations.” Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” traces the Chilean artist’s career-long commitment to exploring discarded and displaced materials, peoples and landscapes in a time of global climate change. French-Mexican surrealist painter Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations” aims to contribute to the scholarship and recognition of under-explored women artists, and to the intercultural influences on European artists in exile in the Americas, whose work was often deeply marked by indigenous and archaic cultures. Both exhibitions are on view from Nov. 26 through March 29, 2020.

The theme of this first elrow’art event is called Kaos Garden. We will witness the reinterpretation of Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” by the DJ and producer Paco Osuna and the multidisciplinary artist Okuda San Miguel. It is a collaboration between the two conceived as a trip through a night that will represent the dynamics of the historic triptych in which we see scenes of paradise and hell. In Kaos Garden, a unique hell will be the starting point. Darkness will represent the night until reaching ecstasy. The paradise will be associated with fun and hedonism with the light of the first hours of the morning in such a mystical and idyllic setting inside a beautifully built structure located at Miami’s exquisite Island Gardens. “We’re so excited and proud of elrow’Art and can’t wait to bring it to Art Basel, a perfect destination for art lovers and music fans to experience this unique multisensory collaboration,” says Michael Julian, Special Advisor to elrow.

“Introducing elrow’art in Miami during Art Basel is a very special event for me. It means bringing the art enthusiasts to a party where they can experience my universe from an unusual perspective. Moreover, the union of art and music really interests me due to the importance that the latter has in my life”. – Okuda San Miguel

Paco Osuna will be the sonic curator and spiritual guide who will select the rhythms that will draw the sound landscape to mark the route from hell to Eden. Okuda’s unique iconographic language of multicolored geometric structures and patterns that have made him one of the world’s most recognizable street artists of today will be on full display, right down to elrow’s signature confetti. He will recreate the surreal, chaotic and multisensory scene of a garden that will unleash emotions and human free will.

Bayfront Holiday Village — A Bustling Wonderland Filled with Brilliant Lights, Shopping, Food and Entertainment Awaits in Downtown Miami

Bayfront Holiday Village Brings Daily Christmas Tree Lights Shows, Waterfront Roller-Skating, Local Vendors, Nightly Music and Top Food and Drink Offerings

Downtown Miami’s iconic Bayfront Park will transform into the magical Bayfront Holiday Village offering free, family-friendly programming all season long. Guests of all ages will enjoy daily 50 ft. Christmas tree LED light shows, waterfront roller-skating by Bayskate, over 50 local vendors, festive music and al fresco food and drinks.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, locals and tourists alike will come for the weather, but stay for great shop-ping, entertainment and Miami’s version of a tropical winter wonderland.

“We know that New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have pop-up holiday villages. We wanted to create a village where people would gather their loved ones and join in on some holiday cheer. Of course, we have something that the rest of the nation envies – our weather,” said Tony Albelo, event creator and CEO at SWARM.

Organizers want people to envision a quaint, picture-perfect, holiday outdoor venue filled with twinkling lights against Miami’s downtown skyline and waterfront Biscayne Bay. The picture-perfect, outdoor, holiday venue will be filled with twinkling lights and larger-than-life displays worthy of capturing the moment and posting it on Insta-gram.

“The only thing missing out of this Hallmark-perfect scene will be the frigid snow, but that’s why we invite our neighbors from the north to come here to enjoy Bayfront Holiday Village, Miami-style,” added Albelo.

Every night, a fully decorated, 50-foot state-of-the-art, animated Christmas Tree will feature hourly LED light shows sequenced to three different festive musical shows produced by Grammy-winning producer A.T. Molina.

New York has The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but Miami’s answer to cold-weather ice skating is Bay Skate, where adults and children can boogie to the beat of freestyle, tropical, contemporary pop and more. In the Northeast, peo-ple are ice skating and sipping hot cocoa wearing parkas. In Miami, we roller skate and sip mojitos in shorts. The Shops will offer a collection of 60 artisans in a jovial setting, each offering unique gift ideas to check off the “nice” list! Foodies will delight their senses at Bayfront Bites, where they’ll find seasonal beverages, sweet treats and food ga-lore!

The adventurous will participate in the Gnauhty Gnome Scavenger Hunt as they navigate Bayfront Park using guidebooks with clues to solve this year’s puzzle. Even fur babies will have a place of their own to hang out with free treats at the Santa Paws Dog Park, and every Sunday they’ll have Puppy Brunch!

This show will celebrate the Charanga Flute master who was well known during the Palladium days! After the untimely death of his father in 2001, Jose Fajardo, Jr. has been the director of the orchestra created by his father in 1949 and has changed the traditional sound of charanga music to a larger salsa sound for all generations. In 2006 he was signed and is still endorsed by the leading manufacturer of percussion instruments, “Latin percussion,” a division of KMC Music. His single, “El Swing of New York” released in 2011, was No. 1 for “Salsa Magazine” play list for 4 consecutive weeks.

In 2014 he launched his new single, “Yo Estoy Desengañado” (Salsa Version) originally recorded as a ballad by the world-famous Cuban singer Orlando Contreras. This track was launched as one of the songs on his upcoming CD release “Mis Recuerdos”. In May of 2015 once again Fajardo released another single “No Tiene Rival” that has been a dancer’s delight. Recently he has been on a tour throughout cities in the United States to teach local students Latin American rhythms and culture.

Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale and AutoNation Team Up to Support Breast Cancer Research Funding During October with a Rosé Garden Party
Saturday, 10/19/2019 – 08:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale
2414 E Sunrise Blvd,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301
Website
Cost: $15 online from September 2 through October 19, $20 at the door. $10 for additional raffle tickets.

An estimated one in eight U.S. women is expected to develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. While these statistics are alarming, individuals and organizations across the nation continue to do their part to fund vital research seeking a cure. This October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale is teaming up with AutoNation, America’s largest automotive retailer, to raise awareness for breast cancer as part of a month-long charitable drive, marked by a new signature event, the Rosé Garden Party on Saturday, October 19, from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Galleria Fort Lauderdale location. Proceeds from the ticketed event, which will feature live entertainment, drink specials and raffles, plus sales from specific drinks all month long, will benefit the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.

Throughout the month of October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale will donate $2 for every signature pink cocktail and $2 for every glass of Maison Belle Claire Rosé that is sold to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. The Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) was founded in 2010 by the Miami Dolphins organization as the signature initiative of the Foundation’s health area. The DCC’s mission is to improve people’s lives through financial support for innovative cancer research at South Florida’s only academic-based cancer center – Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth — the University of Miami Health System. Since its inception, the DCC has raised more than $27.5 million, donating 100 percent of participant-raised funds to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. AutoNation is a proud sponsor of the event.

This month-long effort coincides with AutoNation’s partnership with The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Starting October 1, two gigantic pink reindeer will be prominently displayed throughout the entire month on the exterior of the mall to signify National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A pink themed vehicle will be displayed with the reindeer. This partnership underscores AutoNation’s commitment to driving out cancer. Through its DRV PNK Intiative, the company has raised more than $20 million for cancer research and treatment, placing its iconic pink plates on every vehicle it sells and services from coast to coast.

The month-long fundraiser will be marked by the Rosé Garden Party, a festive soiree featuring signature sips and culinary treats, plus raffles for designer giveaways and spa packages from sought-after brands and premier experiences.

Admission for this ticketed event includes entrance, a glass of Rosé or a signature Pink drink and a raffle ticket. Tickets are available to be purchased online for $15 from September 2 through October 19 at www.rosegardenpartyftl.eventbrite.com. Tickets are also available for purchase at the door for $20. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $10 each. Fifty percent of proceeds from the pre-sold online tickets and 100% of proceeds from the raffle tickets will be donated to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.

LEAP (Ladies Empowerment and Action Program), the only reentry program in Miami-Dade County dedicated exclusively to women transitioning from prison, hosts the Second Chance Soiree on Sept. 26, 2019, from 6-10 p.m. at the Coral Gables Congregational Church. The festive event, which marks the 10th anniversary for LEAP, will draw attention to the serious plight of formerly incarcerated women reintegrating into society through songs and stories of compassion. Tickets are available now, and the event is open to the public.

During the event, sponsors and guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, elegant hors d’ oeuvres, mixed media installation, and participate in a silent auction. All proceeds and donations from the Second Chance Soiree go towards LEAP’s in-prison education programming, post-release support services, and community engagement and advocacy efforts.

LEAP is distinctive, and its transformative services favorably impact communities. Women regain their footing through the organization’s entrepreneurship, employability, life skills, and trauma-informed substance abuse classes. Its secular programming allows for total diversity and inclusivity among all faiths. Since launching in 2009, LEAP has been successful in breaking the cycle of recidivism — less than five percent of LEAP graduates return to prison, in comparison with the national average in excess of 50 percent. Lowering recidivism rates translates into significant taxpayer savings, while creating safer and more stable neighborhoods.

Miami has always been known for its long history of house music. Nothing against those who are comfortable sticking to certainty and query at the unknown, but we have decided to search the underground for a new musical atmosphere. What we found were four of the greatest bass producers within their area of expertise, at the very start of their nationwide Lost Dogz Off The Chain Tour. This will be Wubaholics first show in the Miami area and we plan on continuing to provide wubaholic solutions for those in need of bass music.

::About CHEE::

Chee is supported by G Jones, Bare Noize, Bassnectar, Moody Good, Noisia, DJ Craze, Culprate, Bleep Bloop, edIT (The Glitch Mob), Mat Zo and more…

Following several years of lateral experimentation in sound design, South African producer CHEE’s unique hybrid sound erupted into the international domain in 2016.

With growing hype around his fresh approach and uncompromising bass experimentation with a heavy dancefloor edge, labels started to take a deeper interest in the potential of one of the most promising names in low-end heavy electronica.

Taking influences liberally from his surroundings, as well as in the music that he wraps himself in from the likes of Noisia, Moody Good, Amon Tobin, Skrillex, Ivy Lab and Tsuruda – Chee’s sound has the potential to develop into a genre in its own right.

With an array of high profile releases lined up, and international touring commencing – the scene is set for this young and gifted artist to flourish.

All have been well-recived by critics.

June 22 at 8: Arts Garage presents the Ed Calle Quintet. Dr Calle is a Latin Grammy winner for best Latin Jazz album, a five-time Grammy nominee, and one of the most recorded saxophonists in history. He is a saxophonist, composer, orchestrator, producer, scholar, professor, and leader. Calle is also known for his extraordinary ability to sight-read, interpret, and perform virtually any musical style.

It was obvious from the very start that Ed was a gifted musician. His energetic, passionate, and distinct sound captured the attention of audiences and musicians alike. His teachers and schoolmates often suggested that Calle’s sound is actually part of his DNA. Now, Calle can be heard on more than 1,200 albums, about 9,000 singles, and countless movie and television soundtracks both as a soloist, sideman, composer, arranger, conductor, and producer. “To classify this music as Latin Jazz is like saying the Parthenon is Greek Architecture. It’s true, but ignores the scope, dimension, and brilliance of the artifact.”
– KUCI

Arts Garage is located at 94 NE 2nd Ave in Delray Beach. Tickets are $35-$40-$45 at https://ci.ovationtix.com/34768/production/1009342?performanceId=10403357 or 561-450-6357. South Florida Jazz at Bailey Hall presents an Evening with Raul Midón and the Lionel Loueke Trio 6/15/19

South Florida Jazz at Bailey Hall presents an Evening with Raul Midón and the Lionel Loueke Trio
Saturday, 06/15/2019 – 08:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Bailey Hall
3501 Davie Road,
Davie, Florida 33314
Website
Cost: 40-50

Saturday June 15 at 8:00 PM: Genre-bending icons and Raul Midón and Lionel Loueke join forces to present a special night of incredible guitar and vocal wizardry. The acclaimed instrumentalists-singers will perform individual sets of original material in an evening that will culminate in an unforgettable jam backed by Loueke’s dynamic trio.

Raul Midón is celebrated as one of music’s most distinctive and searching voices. Heralded as a “one-man band, who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus,” (NY Times), Midón has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and even Snoop Dogg. Blind since birth, Midón produced-engineered his first Grammy-nominated album, Bad Ass and Blind, which confronts the challenges of blindness and musical composition. Midón’s 2018 follow-up release, If You Really Want, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy award in this same (Best Vocal Jazz) category.

Lionel Loueke brings his West African (Benin) roots and world music experience to jazz to color his unique phrasing as a guitarist and vocalist. A Herbie Hancock protégé for the past 10 years, Loueke has also recorded and toured with varied instrumentalists and vocalists. Praised by Hancock as “a musical painter,” Loueke combines harmonic complexity, soaring melody, a deep knowledge of African folk forms, and unconventional guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative personal sound. Paul Simon raves that Loueke is “one of a rare handful of guitarists who move effortlessly between his West African roots and modern American Jazz”, and Sting cites Loueke as “one the most original, essential and inspiring musicians on our planet today.”

Also featuring Massimo Biolcati, double bass, and Ferenc Nemeth, drums

Bailey Hall is located at 3501 DAVIE ROAD in Davie. Tickets are $40-45-50 at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pesptpm/10268678/1050329. Tickets for students under 25 are $10 with valid ID at the door. More info at the box office: 954-201-6884.
