History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will shine a spotlight on the significant contributions of local Native American artists during Native American Heritage Month in November. “Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” featuring a retrospective of contemporary and traditional fine art from Elgin Jumper, Jessica Osceola, Gordon Oliver Wareham, Brian Zepeda, Pedro Zepeda, Erica Deitz, Samuel Tommie, Tia Blais-Billie, Jacqueline Osceola and Stephanie Hall (collaboratively curated by the artists along with Tara Chadwick, Jimmy Osceola, and Dante Blais-Billie) will run from November 15 – January 12 at the New River Inn building of History Fort Lauderdale, an Art Basel partner cultural institution.

“Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” is one of several insightful experiences at History Fort Lauderdale. Permanent exhibits include the new “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean, Latinx and women artists sharing their views of history.

Last year, History Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with The Florida Humanities Council, launched Florida Stories’ “Walk Fort Lauderdale,” the first FREE Broward County walking tour app (available through the App Store and Google Play). The tour, featuring archival photos, renderings and cultural narratives, allows visitors to learn about the colorful history of Fort Lauderdale at their own pace at 12 significant locations including the New River and Bryan Homes on the History Fort Lauderdale Campus and the Bryan/Abreu building (201 SW 2nd St.).

Entry to “Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” is free with History Fort Lauderdale general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Flight Into Egypt: Rare, Reformation-Era Stained Glass Exhibition

Two rare, pre-17th century, stained-glass panels depicting the Holy Family’s Flight Into Egypt are on permanent display at the Deering Estate beginning October 19th. The historic significance of these pieces cannot be overstated, as very few stained glass representations of religious art from this period have survived centuries marked by the ravages of war, political upheavals and natural deterioration. Of the stained-glass panels from that era that have survived, there are only 14 other pieces on public display in Florida. Admission to the 450-acre estate is $15 for adults; $7 for children (ages 4-14); Military and seniors receive a $2 discount on Tuesdays, and Deering Estate Foundation members admitted free. MOAD MDC will present Alternative Facts, an interactive public performance by Paul Ramírez Jonas that explores the concept that truth is a social contract. Over the course of two days in two different parts of the city, the artist will engage individual members of the public in a series of actions that call into question commonly understood ideas about facts, authority, exchange, value, and trust.

For Alternative Facts, Ramírez Jonas will set up notary stations in public locations. For several hours each day, he will invite passersby to participate in a simple exchange in which they sit at the table and make an untruthful statement. Through a brief but elaborate process, the artist will notarize each statement as a testament to its truthfulness. The participants are then asked to pay for the service with a gold coin, which is made by the artist electroplating their spare change in a gold solution. The exchange results in two drawings: one for the participant to keep and another to be displayed near the notary station.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, invites the community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with “Ofrendas,” its annual homage to the colorful traditions of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos. The cultural immersion exhibit, containing both fine art and creative community memorial altars or “ofrendas” covered in photographs, flowers and favorite items of the dearly departed, opens Sunday, October 6 and runs through Sunday, November 3 at the New River Inn. This year’s associated activities will include family fun on opening day, a Community Conversation about the origins of Day of the Dead and an evening of parades, costumes and revelry on Saturday, November 2.

Activities and events for this year’s “Ofrendas” are as follows:

“Ofrendas” Family Fun Day Exhibit Opening, Sunday, October 6, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Free
Celebrate another year of life and the remembrance of loved ones in preparation for Día de los Muertos. Family Fun Day is a FREE public event featuring a sharing of stories, face-painting, a puppet show and touring of the community “Ofrendas” exhibition.

Florida Day of the Dead Celebration on Saturday, November 2 – 2 p.m. – 11 p.m.; Free to view celebration
Stake your spot on the lawn of History Fort Lauderdale for this annual traditional, colorful skeleton processional sponsored by Riverwalk, City of Fort Lauderdale and the Puppet Network & Puppet Guild of South Florida. Community members in skeleton costumes and masks “meander through villages” to visit the graves of their ancestors. City Officials will kick-off the parade and then mariachi musicians lead the way as this processional of thousands of skeletons streams from Huizenga Plaza west along Riverwalk. It then heads north on SW 3rd Avenue, where the celebration continues at Revolution Live Entertainment Complex. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, invites guests to explore “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale,” a new major permanent exhibit opening October 1 (members-only preview on September 30 at 6 p.m.).

The exhibit will allow visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis. The first major history exhibition in three years, this visually compelling exhibit will occupy half of one of the main upstairs galleries and will remain part of the History Museum’s permanent exhibits. Highlights of the exhibit include New River development pioneer Tom Bryan’s original desk and chair from the 1920s, agricultural artifacts from the early 1900s, a historic hotel register and family photos.

The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale, descendants of William Bryan, a Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina, can be traced back to Florida as early as 1844 with the birth of great grandson Philemon Nathaniel Bryan in Hamilton County. Philemon served in the Confederate Army and moved south to Volusia County after the Civil War. He acquired extensive citrus groves and served as the mayor of New Smyrna. After acquiring wealth and a reputation for his agricultural skills, he and his wife, Lucy, moved further south and arrived on the New River in 1895, where Bryan served as a construction contractor for the Florida East Coast Railway and officer in the first city bank. He and his seven children, including Reed A. Bryan, Tom M. Bryan, Virginia Dallas Bryan and Constance Bryan, along with several relatives, also settled in Fort Lauderdale and helped build it to prominence. They worked as farmers, innkeepers, and businesspeople becoming civic leaders and nurturing the City on its way to prosperity.

Hydra’s Rain, a multisensory and participatory meditation guided by artist Hayden Dunham, where the audience will be bathed in sound within the museum. At 7 PM, Naomi Fisher, artist and director of BFI, and Katherine Fleming, founder of Bridge Initiative, will host a conversation on the ecologically-focused collaboration between artists Hayden Dunham and Katerina Llanes, discussing their upcoming exhibition with BFI, IN: the serpent :TO (Hydra’s Rain), opening September 28. MOAD presents a series of public programs related to its current exhibition, Where the Oceans Meet. Rather than a formal sit-down lecture, MOAD’s “Discussions In Situ” are engaging, conversational, and scholarly exhibition tours lead by a wide array of interdisciplinary experts. While pointing to specific art work and archival material on view, Tsang sparks a conversation on “The Hidden Cabrera,” highlighting Cabrera’s biography and research methods.

Where the Oceans Meet is an exhibition of modern and contemporary art that resonates with the pioneering thought of two Caribbean writers, Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant. The show is comprised of an international group of artists and collectives consider notions of shifting and porous borders—and how crossing borders has shaped our world. They articulate various aspects of the two scholars’ thoughts on race, diaspora, colonialization, creolization, language, and territory, particularly with regards to Miami’s position in a world that never stops turning. Where the Oceans Meet will be on view until January 12, 2020.

Studio art intensive workshops for building a strong portfolio of work. Each week is devoted to a particular medium, providing students the ability to select and explore material. Professional art teachers will advise and guide students to develop their skillset, hone their studio art practice, and experiment with a multitude of materials. Every month, the full moon emits a powerful energy. Since the effects are typically felt up to two weeks after the full moon phase, it’s the perfect opportunity to align the mind, body and spirit. Guests will check in at 6:30 p.m. while enjoying beats by Mahtayo and complimentary drinks. The Full Moon “Glow-Up” Event Series features a one-hour class of yoga by TruFusion Coral Gables (starting at 7:00 p.m.) followed by a 30-minute beauty and retail intermission (participating sponsors: Glow-UP Make-up & Braid Bar by Glamsquad; Rupees Sarees and Athleta). The documentary feature Nueva Venecia portrays the inhabitants of a small village in the Santa Marta marsh in Colombia, who live on the water and make a living by fishing. Their lives changed drastically on November 22, 2000, when a paramilitary group slaughtered 37 people and forced the other villagers to move out. In spite of the horror and the possibility of further acts of violence, the community eventually returned, choosing to face the hazards of new assaults rather than quit their way of life. Things did change, however, as fishing-boat memorials and ceremonies to honor the dead have become familiar, as have constant pleas to the authorities for justice. Something else keeps people together: soccer, played again on the field built on stilts, long hidden under water. Sport provides the only hope for a way out for many of the local youngsters, who dream of both social and economic improvement, and of being discovered by some scout or club agent to become Colombian soccer stars.

In the Park, is a trip to the past. The year is 1962. The subject, a Sunday day in Bay Front Park, Miami, when the world was still innocent. The hidden camera, the free cinema, allows us to observe from a distance, to be voyeurs without being discovered. We see young and old in a sweet-and-sour situation, which gives the viewer a strange nostalgic feeling.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Landscape Paintings” from Sunday, July 7 – Saturday, September 28, 2019. Forman’s colorful and impressionist works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

Blurring the fluid boundaries between present and future, documentary and fiction, Paths Through Utopias is a feature-length utopian road movie exploring a post-capitalist Europe. Shot during a seven-month journey in 2008, visiting ten utopian experiments—from the direct-action Climate Camp set up illegally beside Heathrow airport to a hamlet squatted by French art punks, from occupied self-managed Serbian factories to a free-love commune in an ex Stasi base—this magic-realist travelogue transports us to a parallel universe where money is worthless and private property has been abolished.

Celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month with “Island Imprint: A History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County,” a fine art and historical retrospective produced in conjunction with Island Syndicate, on display June 1 – 29 at History Fort Lauderdale.

The exhibit, part of a multiyear initiative celebrating Broward County’s Caribbean heritage, traces the Caribbean community’s roots through a variety of fine art mediums, historical news clippings, archival photos, memorabilia and artifacts colorfully displaying the diverse influence of island culture on the vibrant fabric of Fort Lauderdale. Works featured include Paul Campbell’s (Jamaica) Fervent Hope and pieces from Karl ‘Jerry’ Craig (Jamaica), and photographer Silvi Lizama (Cuba). The installation will also include a storytelling aspect of the shared Caribbean communities’ history via personal memories and mementos allowing for an immersive foray into local Caribbean-American culture.

“Island Imprint” is a 2019 – 2020 initiative featuring a series of events and installations paying homage to Caribbean culture, traditions and history. The project celebrates the diversity of West Indian heritage that merges in Broward County with interactive, educational entertainment including historical exhibitions, cultural displays, theatrical performances, cuisine, music, artisan crafts, and more, presented in settings that show the multicultural splendor of Broward County.

“Island Imprint: A History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County” is produced by Island Syndicate whose directors include the visionaries behind the recent “Taste the Islands” special event, television series and Island Origins Magazine. Soul City, USA (2016) is a documentary short that tells the story of a group of civil rights activists and city slickers who attempt to build a multiracial utopia in the heart of Klan Country, North Carolina, in the 1970s. As this group of dreamers try to bring together unlikely allies to support black power and economic development, they are forced to balance their soaring idealism with the hostile reality of the times.
Paolo Soleri: Citizen of the Planet (2016) explores the artist, the dreamer, the philosopher, the architect Paolo Soleri as he tried to build his new world filled with futuristic ideas and controversy.

Zins-Browne’s The Chaos Opera draws upon Glissant’s defense of chaos as a mechanism for embracing difference. The performance brings together voices from diverse musical traditions—R&B, bolero, death metal, rap, and opera—to explore how different voices might cohabitate in the same space without capitulating, assimilating, or forcing cohesion. Rather than the idealized harmonies of “fusion” music, it asks how different voices can maintain their opacity in relation to each other, and how such a cacophony might allow new forms, voices, and hybrid languages to emerge. The Chaos Opera will be performed by Dyna Edyne, Michale Grafals, Celeste Landeros, Niuvis Martin, and Nad Pitt.

This compelling transnational exhibition of modern and contemporary art considers how crossing borders continues to shape our world.
The international group of thirty-eight artists and collectives in the exhibition investigates the ways borders form identities and negotiate imaginary spaces. The artists’ inquiries range across mediums and genres, and attempt to answer urgent questions that concern us all today.

Where the Oceans Meet stems from the pioneering literary, anthropological, and philosophical work of two Caribbean writers, the Cuban painter, scholar, and ethnologist Lydia CABRERA (1899–1991) and the Martinican philosopher, poet, and literary critic Édouard GLISSANT (1928–2011). Embodied by the works of art in the exhibition, their ideas explore how art can think and break through barriers of history, geography, and culture.

Where the Oceans Meet will offer a platform for questioning colonial and modern thought, and placing it into perspective. Its themes resonate in Miami, a city where oceans meet, so often imagined as a crossroads of the Americas and a space of transition par excellence.

The exhibition is curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Asad Raza, Gabriela Rangel, and Rina Carvajal.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor The Forman Family, Broward County pioneers and early developers, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman during its History Makers 2019 fundraiser set for Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the New River Inn. The event spotlights individuals who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

For over a century, the Forman family has been major contributors to the development of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Ever since Hamilton and Blanche Collins Forman arrived in 1910, they, and their descendants, have played leading roles in the fields of agriculture, business, water management, education, public service and philanthropy. Dr. Charles Forman and his brother Hamilton Forman were Broward’s most powerful political figures from the 1950s to the 1990s. When their pioneer dairy farms and pastures were closed to facilitate the building of Florida’s Turnpike in the mid-1950s, the family turned their attention toward education and building a world-class education complex on their land. Today, the former farmland houses campuses of Florida Atlantic University, Florida International and the University of Florida’s Broward complexes, Nova elementary, middle and high schools, Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.

Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman, has been a foremost advocate of historic preservation, arts and culture and philanthropy in Broward County for close to 25 years. For 11 years, Glassman was an administrator for the Broward County Cultural Division where he worked closely with elected officials and business leaders to further the quality of life in all of Broward’s major cities through the arts and culture. This work included serving on advisory boards in Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. He has served on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board (three years) and the Planning and Zoning Board (six years). His many years in various civic leadership positions include president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation and a seven-year tenure as the president of the Central Beach Alliance. Steve has also served as president of several beach condominium associations including his current six-year tenure at the Sapphire Condominium. He has remained focused on fixing our city’s infrastructure via smart growth and proactive future planning.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 108th birthday with cocktails, food and drink stations from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, CA Catering, LauderAle, Gran Forno and more to be announced plus themed entertainment on the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus.

Photographs artistically capturing the beauty and majesty of Florida’s coastal vistas, skies and wildlife will be on display at the New River Inn.

JohnBob Carlos, a native Floridian and photographer, captures images of Florida’s wildlife, landscapes, cultures, and waterways. His art of the lens is his means for creating a voice for Florida’s nature and preserving Florida’s culture. At a young age he felt a calling to paddle, hike, fish, and explore the Everglades. He was at home among the hammocks, swamps, strands, animals, Mangrove Islands and Florida’s wild. In recent years Carlos has become deeply concerned about the state of Florida’s nature – the devastation of these areas mostly due to money, development, pollution, business and politics. He continues to realistically document the beauty and wonder of the world around us and uses his lens to focus on the region’s need for the greater conservation and preservation of resources.

Presented by History Fort Lauderdale, bringing the stories of our diverse community to life through engaging educational experiences, innovative cultural exhibits, research and preservation of artifacts. Residents and visitors to Fort Lauderdale are invited to explore the city’s rich past that is housed in historic buildings on a lushly landscaped campus – the History Museum of Fort Lauderdale situated in the 1905 New River Inn, the 1907 Pioneer House Museum, the 1899 Ivy Cromartie Schoolhouse Museum and the Hoch Research Library, South Florida’s foremost history center housing print resources and newspapers from 1910 – present plus 400,000 archival photos, 2,500 maps and 5,000 architectural blueprints. Queer Miami: A History of LGBTQ Communities, curated by Miami native and history professor Julio Capó Jr., will chronicle Miami’s queer past, reflecting its gender and sexual diversity for over one hundred years. Through artifacts, photographs, archival footage, and more, the exhibition will display the stories of Miami’s queer communities who, despite discrimination, isolation, and violence, managed to carve out spaces for themselves and made their voices heard in southern Florida. The exhibition opens Saturday, March 15 at HistoryMiami Museum.

Queer Miami will be HistoryMiami Museum’s featured exhibition for the 2019-2020 calendar. Displayed in the museum’s 5,000 square foot gallery, Queer Miami will address topics such as: policing and criminalization, community development, advocacy and activism, immigration and the AIDS crisis, and what the future holds for Miami’s queer community. Visitors will be able to see memorabilia from some of Miami’s oldest gay bars, photographs of rallies and marches, archival material from Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign, historical footage, and original video interviews from the people involved in creating Miami’s LGBTQ communities. Interactive components will encourage visitors to contribute their own story to the exhibition.

HistoryMiami Museum will open the exhibition with a preview party on Friday, March 15 at 6 pm. The opening event will feature live music, performances, complimentary beverages, and more. Tickets are $10 or free with pre-registration. Visit bit.ly/queer-miami-party to reserve your spot.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and ArtCenter/South Florida are pleased to co-present the first-ever Latinx Art Sessions, a two-day discussion program—connecting artists, industry leaders, and the greater Miami art scene—that will explore the impact that Latinx art is having on the national landscape and how continued research and academic focus can drive even greater impact.

Sessions will include: a presentation on the significance of Cuban artist Felix-González-Torres, an openly gay man who had a major influence on the politicization of art during the 1980s AIDS crisis; a discussion on the ways U.S. Latinx artists are disrupting racial binaries in America; and a panel exploring what the national Latinx art movement means to Miami where over 60% of the population is Hispanic.

The Latinx Art Sessions are an extension of PAMM’s new Latin American and Latinx Art Fund, a new affiliate group created to support exhibitions and programming at PAMM for Latin American and Latinx artists. This program is organized by María Elena Ortiz, Associate Curator, PAMM, Naiomy Guerrero, DAMLI Curatorial Fellow, PAMM, and Natalia Zuluaga, Director, [NAME] Publications.

NSU Art Museum’s symposium History of Art and Hip Hop in South Florida,
coinciding with the presentation of the rap musical Hamilton at Broward Center
for the Performing Arts, explores the rich and distinct developments of this
interdisciplinary genre in the region.

Featuring artists and performers steeped in Southern hip hop, this symposium
addresses the expansion of the genre in South Florida in the 1980s with its unique
fusion of Reggae, West Indian, Latino, and African music and dance with early rap
and Miami bass, the role pirate radio and Broward-based WEDR radio played in
broadcasting this unique blend, and how it influenced the work of South Florida
artists.

Participants include artists william cordova, Luis Gispert, and Kandy Lopez, among
others. Free dance and rap workshops and demonstrations will be held prior to
the symposium for children, teens and adults.

This event takes place during NSU Art Museum’s Free First Thursday’s Starry Nights.

History Fort Lauderdale presents a full spectrum of contemporary works by multi-generational Native American artists. Honoring the history of the land we now call Fort Lauderdale and the legacy of Seminole Tribe ancestors, “Seminole Art Scene from the Frontlines” fine art exhibit will be the centerpiece of the history museum’s Native America Heritage Month celebration featuring works from Elgin Jumper, Jimmy Osceola, Jessica Osceola, Gordon Oliver Wareham, Brian Zepeda, Erica Deitz, Samuel Tommie and Stephanie Hall. The exhibit runs through January 28, 2019.

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and BroCoMo (Bro-ward Co-unty Mo-dern) will present a Mid-century Modern Architectural Tour highlighting the historic architecture of our city and the unique works of Dan Duckham. Internationally renowned artist Christo will discuss the large-scale, ephemeral public works he created with his late wife and collaborator, Jeanne-Claude, over the course of a monumental career that spans six decades. PAMM will kick off the fifth year of the Scholl Lecture Series with distinguished artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa. Jafa’s interdisciplinary practice combines film, installation, sculpture, and performance to examine assumptions about race and identity. Throughout his multifaceted career, Jafa has worked with John Akomfrah, Ava DuVernay, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, Spike Lee, and Jay-Z, among many others. His much-celebrated 2016 video Love is the Message, the Message is Death was recently acquired by the PAMM Collectors Council and is on view through April 21, 2019.

Celebrate the colorful traditions and heritage of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos during “Ofrendas,” a cultural immersion exhibit, opening Sunday, October 7 at Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. The History Museum housed in the New River Inn on the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society campus will be awash in bold hues and imaginative decor as it showcases both fine art and creative community memorial altars or “ofrendas,” covered in photographs, flowers and favorite items of the dearly departed. Associated activities will include family fun on opening day from noon – 4 p.m., a Community Conversation about Day of the Dead with an artifact repatriation ceremony on October 29 at 6 p.m. and a closing evening of parades, costumes and revelry on Friday, November 2 from noon – 8 p.m.

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will debut “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a new exhibit beginning September 25. There will be a members-only preview on September 24 at 6 p.m. before the public opening the following day.

Juliette A. Lange (1882-1977) was a socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy. At the apex of her career (1915-1930), Lange traveled the nation and Europe with theater companies performing popular musicals. As a longtime resident of the Rio Vista community, Lange was active in many civic, religious, social, and musical organizations. A legacy of her family is Lange Park in the city of Davie: former grove land contributed by Miss Lange three years prior to her passing.

This exhibit is a snapshot of fashion from 1920 – 1960. Lange’s beautiful gowns, hats and jewelry will be displayed along with programs and clippings from her fabulous days in professional theater. Visitors will explore early 20th century musical theater, the artist scene at that time in New York City, the Rio Vista neighborhood, citrus farming and Fort Lauderdale’s mid-century social and civic happenings.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) North Miami will present the exhibition “Tracing the Red Thread,” by distinguished South Florida-based artist Mira Lehr, Sept. 6 – Nov. 4, 2018. The multimedia, museum-wide installation will reflect Lehr’s eco-feminist philosophy, the concept of mankind working with nature rather than dominating over it. Lehr uses the classical myth of Ariadne to explore the beauty, fragility and interconnectedness of the endangered aquatic ecosystem of the South Florida coast.

In Lehr’s mesmerizing installation, two and three-dimensional works evoke dense thickets of mangroves, the dangerous beauty of jellyfish and the ethereal luminosity of the coral reef. Lehr creates a mysterious world whose seductive beauty reminds us not only of the gifts that nature gives us, but of the importance of preserving them for the future generations.

Comprised of a variety of multimedia works, “Tracing the Red Thread” focuses on climate change and environmental issues as a major factor facing mankind today. The exhibition draws on the lessons Lehr learned six decades ago working with Buckminster Fuller on his “World Game Project.” As Lehr learned in her work with Fuller, the earth must be seen as a unified island within the oceans so one is made aware of the interconnectedness of all life.

Admission to MOCA is $5, but free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place on Thursday, Sept. 13, with an admission cost of $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

This year, Vizcaya Ball organizers pave the “silk road” for philanthropists and attendees to explore the Eastern influences of the historic estate during the upcoming 62nd Annual Vizcaya Ball.
To the naked eye, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens design was decidedly Italian but woven into its tapestry are influences and inspiration that came from well beyond Europe and reached further east.
Examples can be found in the water channels in the Fountain Garden, reminiscent of Moghul garden design in Rajasthan; life-size sculpted peacocks in the Marine Garden symbolizing India; the O-bridge in the same garden inspired by similar bridges in China and Japan; and the Casba, the tiled, domed folly making playful reference to the Middle East. The decor in the Breakfast room and the Cathay guest bedroom in the Main House most aptly illustrates Chinoiserie, the style based on European interpretation of Chinese and Asian art and décor.
These influences will be celebrated as funds are raised for the continued preservation of the National Historic Landmark on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. presented by Chopard and fashions by renowned designer Naeem Khan. Music is provided by the Danny Beck Band and fireworks display by Add Fire of Miami.

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a unique performance by GRAMMY Award-winning Artist Nestor Torres as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 and recognizes Hispanic and Latin American heritage and culture. As a flautist, Torres has found inspiration in classical, Cuban, rock, and jazz sounds resulting in a rhythmic and mellifluous flute sound that has become a music genre all by itself.

In collaboration with the City of North Miami’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, the public is invited to enjoy this special Jazz at MOCA event and the rhythms of Nestor Torres, rain or shine.

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to welcome Latin GRAMMY Award-winning artist Dr. Ed Calle for a special performance as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Calle originates from Venezuela and is best known for playing the saxophone, however he is also a talented composer, orchestrator, producer, scholar, and professor at Miami Dade College.

In this talk, Lorena Zárate, historian and president of Habitat International Coalition, reviews the urban movements and struggles that have shaped Mexico City’s political agendas and public policies, in particular those related to housing, public space, and mobility. In 2017, Mexico City adopted its own constitution, which is one of the first in the world to incorporate its inhabitants’ “Right to the City.” Zárate assesses the city’s achievements and challenges, as well as the lessons that other cities can learn from Mexico City’s 2016 New Urban Agenda.

Disasters, such as hurricanes, as well as the doom of climate change and sea level rise have fostered new thinking about urban planning, particularly in cities like Miami, Houston and New Orleans. There is a growing awareness that rebuilding must be sustainable in the long term in order to protect communities from dislocation and, ultimately, destruction. An industrial designer by training, Cynthia Smith serves as Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s curator of socially responsible design, integrating her design expertise with her advocacy on human rights and social justice issues. She has curated several ground-breaking exhibitions on the potential of design to impact the lives of everyday people and has been named a “20/20 New Pioneer” by Icon design magazine. She is a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network, and serves on numerous international design juries.

By the People aims to empower visitors to see themselves as designers—not just of objects, but also of ideas, strategies, and solutions that improve their daily lives. The exhibition showcases 60 of the most innovative and impactful design projects from every region of the United States. The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month with a unique performance by Julio Montalvo as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Montalvo is a leading trombonist from the island of Cuba. Inspired by his island roots, Montalvo blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with elements of modern jazz to create his original style – New Latin Jazz.

As a songwriter, producer, arranger, session musician, and a Grammy award winner, Montalvo is well-versed in the world of jazz. Montalvo has collaborated with the leading stars of pop and rock in Spain and has shared the stage with renown musicians from the international jazz circuit such as Mark Nightingale, Mike Mossman, and Gladstone Galliza. In 2008, Montalvo founded his own record label, Montalvo Records and since has produced more than 10 recordings.

The public is invited to enjoy the unique rhythms of Montalvo, rain or shine.

What can architecture and urban planning do to mitigate racial inequality? Do we still believe that residential racial integration is the solution? Miami’s lines of racial segregation have barely moved since the Civil Rights movement. On the one hand, incoming immigrants settled in neighborhoods according to preexisting demographics, while residential programs crafted in the aftermath of the 1968 Fair Housing Act to promote integration were increasingly defunded. On the other, new infrastructure projects, along with real estate interests, reconfigured the city’s geography in some areas. As a result, black neighborhoods experienced a decline. How can new “placemaking” initiatives, largely spearheaded by communities and the nonprofit sector, contribute to overcoming inequality?

Sam Van Leer, the president and founder of the nonprofit Urban Paradise Guild (UPG), asks how can we fight the causes and effects of climate change while making Miami a better place to live today? Instead of solutions that exclude the public and allow big business to shape policy, Van Leer examines how everyone can get involved in projects such as restoring natural habitats, introducing urban agriculture for low-income families, and engaging the public and local leaders to find new ways to protect the environment. Van Leer has himself led efforts likes these at various parks and urban areas around the county, including ACE Preserve, Amelia Earhart Park, and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Recently, “placemaking” has become a buzzword among policy makers, foundations, and community activists. As public institutions reduce their involvement in the arts, culture, and education, private stakeholders have stepped in to address communities’ needs for inclusive public spaces. These spaces, ranging from small children playgrounds to entire arts districts, are ideally conceived in dialogue among communities, public policy agents, interested businesses and non-profits, and others. This panel will discuss how to activate “creative placemaking” initiatives, and how to balance communities’ mobilization (or lack thereof), the top-down approaches of policy-makers, and the profit drives of urban developers.

For more than thirty years, Miami-based artist Karen Rifas has amassed a body of work that endeavors to understand and re-imagine space. Well known for her minimal cord and leaf installations, and precise, methodical line drawings, in 2016, Rifas began a focused exploration into the constructive possibilities of color. Employing densely hued shapes and irregular lines, Rifas creates spaces that oscillate between the two- and three-dimensional. Deceptive Constructions surveys this recent body of work for the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in over 10 years. Through variegated floor and sculptural installations, works on paper, and wood panel, Rifas uses a concise language of richly contrasted color to alter our perception of space.

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will present the group exhibition “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly” from May 24 – Aug. 5, 2018. Curated by Risa Puleo, the exhibition features the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas separated into conceptual categories including indigenous, immigrant and assimilated.   
 
The exhibition focuses on the monarch, the only butterfly that migrates in two directions, as a geographic range and a metaphor. Monarchs (specifically those of eastern North American) fly from southern Canada through the Midwest on their way to Michoacán, Mexico and back. 
 
This survey of artists from or living in the path of the monarch, brings to life the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call to build a wall in Mexico as unrelenting issues that create challenges for people native to the Americas — being separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated. 
 
Like the butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely navigate its way through middle America with inherited knowledge, these artists also use inherited cultural memory to showcase and explore historical narratives of their respective heritage through abstract techniques. 
 
Artists incorporate processes such as basket weaving, beadwork, copper hammering, and quilting, and materials such as stucco, plaster, ceramics, and feathers, that hold a high degree of resonance within native, immigrant, and brown aesthetics and vernacular cultures. The exhibition also charts the movement of styles and approaches through large spans of time across the Americas, speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form. 
 
William Cordova, a nationally respected Miami-based artist, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is hosting a group exhibition of artists from ProjectArt, a nonprofit organization that provides free after-school art classes to underserved youth in public libraries through an artist residency program.

Taking inspiration from the libraries and communities they served for 9 months, these Miami-based, multi-disciplinary artists will come together to showcase the artwork they created during their tenure as ProjectArt Resident Artists. The artists teach, mentor youth, and create new works in eight public libraries across Miami-Dade County.

MOCA and ProjectArt will kick off the 4-day viewing with an opening event on Thursday, May 31 at 6:00 p.m. that includes a 7:15 p.m. walk-through led by the artists who will offer exclusive insight into their works.

The exhibition will feature works by Alex Nuñez (Hispanic Branch Library), Anthony Anaya (North Central Branch Library), Blair Butterfield (Homestead Branch Library), Maria Theresa Barbist (Culmer/Overtown Branch Library), Morel Doucet (Arcola Lakes Branch Library), Rosa Naday Garmendia (Little River Branch Library), Rosemarie Romero (Model City Branch Library) and Stuart Sheldon (Edison Branch Library).

The exhibition is on view from May 31 – June 3, 2018

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is celebrating Women’s History Month with Chloe Dolandis as part of its monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Recognized as a young voice with an old soul, Dolandis moves the audience with her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence.

Appealing to a wide range of audiences and locally recognized, Dolandis’ talents are very versatile and explore multiple genres. Her debut album, “Bring Back the Fever,” is a unique, stylistic blend of jazz, pop and soul, while her EP, “There’s More,” offers a more intimate side of her voice and songwriting abilities. Dolandis’ country song, “One Man’s White Trash (Is Another Man’s Treasure),” was a finalist in the prestigious NSAI Song Contest presented by CMT and her pop/soul song, “Solid Woman,” was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition’s Performance Category.

Join us for a conversation with Miami-based artist Cara Despain on the art historical understanding of landscapes as idealized settings and our contemporary perceptions. Cara Despain was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Utah. Her most recent installation was featured at Fair, an all-women exhibition organized by Spinello Projects during Miami Art Week/Art Basel 2017.

Taking the form of an unconsummated striptease with a multicultural pop soundtrack, Colombian artist María José Arjona’s performance All the Others in Me functions as a bridge between “miss-understandings.” It refuses to point at anything specific or resolve these misunderstandings, but instead offers a panoramic vista on our perception of each other across distances. These distances, intentionally created, augmented, altered, and manipulated by mass media and other systems of control, place us in positions of submission under a blanket of so-called “information.” Arjona’s work highlights the continuous transitioning of thoughts that encourage us to just see and absorb but never question. All the Others in Me participates in several conversations between the objectified female body in Western civilization and the feminine body within Islam.

María José Arjona lives and works in her native Bogota. Her artistic practice focuses on long durational performances in which the body is the primary material and medium of visual communication, generating non-linear narratives beyond the concept of identity. Arjona’s work is included in many public and private collections internationally. She has presented her work across Latin America and at the Louvre in Paris; the Thessaloniki Biennale; the Guangzhou Triennale; the Madre Museum in Naples, Italy; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; La Caixa in Madrid; the Ballroom Marfa, Texas; The Watermill Center in Water Mill, New York; and the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City. Arjona will have a major solo exhibition in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota, accompanied by the first large publication on her work, which includes an essay by André Lepecki.

This lecture-performance addresses the notion of “encounter” as essential to a politics and an aesthetics of the commons. By drawing from several philosophical and political traditions that have analyzed the ethics and politics of the encounter, and by invoking artistic propositions that bring into the world improbable events (particularly in performance art and experimental choreography) André Lepecki will consider how the event of encounter precipitates groundings for living away from the necropolitical logic of our current imperial, colonial and murderous neoliberal monohumanism.
André Lepecki is Professor and Chairperson in Performance Studies at New York University. He is editor of several anthologies on dance and performance theory, including Of the Presence of the Body (2004) and Dance (2012). An independent performance curator, he has created projects for Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; the Hayward Gallery, London; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the 2016 Biennale of Sydney. Lepecki is the author of Exhausting Dance: Performance and the Politics of Movement (2006, translated into ten languages) and Singularities: Dance in the Age of Performance (2016).

HistoryMiami Museum is honoring Overtown’s own legendary “Soul Man,” Sam Moore, with an exhibition. The exhibition, titled “The Art of Soulebrity,” focuses on his work throughout the decades and will be open to the public until April 15, 2018. On display will be Moore’s 1968 Grammy award and 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction piece, as well as a Bruce Springsteen hat from a performance they did together in 2012. The museum will also showcase art, including digital art reproduced with archival ink on museum acrylic by artist Brigitte Andrade, and other iconic items related to the Civil Rights Movement in Miami.

In Out of the Shadows III, Jumana Emil Abboud asks “What do places speak of?” This audio-visual performance includes Palestinian folk-tales and traditional oral histories. These stories that inspire the artist have always emphasized the importance of relationships with the landscape and with sources of water. Evoking her Palestinian roots and the places to which she is deeply connected—Jerusalem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Galilee—the artist uses music, poems, and drawings to weave together past and present, contemporary reality and the unseen world with its jinns and ghoulehs. For this world premiere, Abboud collaborates with Issa Freij, and the artists reflect on their experiences during a four-year film project as they searched for the haunted sites of which the tales tell. Their interactive storytelling explores folk customs, sacred objects, and enchanted locations to underscore themes of memory, loss, and resilience.

Born in Brazil in1968, Eleonora Fabião is an artist and theorist who has performed actions in the streets since 2008. In 2011, she received the Arts in the Streets Award from the Brazilian National Foundation of the Arts and in 2014 the Rumos Itaú Cultural Grant that resulted in the publication of the book AÇÕES/ ACTIONS. Fabião is a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in the Theater Directing Undergraduate Program and the Arts of the Scene Graduate Program, where she chairs the artistic experimentation wing. Fabião is interested in the poetics and ethics of the strange, of the encounter, of precariousness. She considers the street actions as forms of knowledge and thought, and understands concepts and theories as sources of energy to keep investigating and inventing city, art, university, and writing. Her performance work has taken place in several venues including as part of Performa15 in New York in 2015, and at the Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica and the Museu Bispo do Rosário, both in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is thrilled to welcome saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Roberts travels around the globe performing and recording with some of the greatest jazz artists of all time including James Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Christian McBride, Sammy Figueroa, Dave Douglas, Orrin Evans and Kurt Elling.

A jazz giant, Roberts has received numerous awards including three consecutive DownBeat Jazz Soloist Awards. He received a Grammy nomination in 2011, and was the only Australian semi-finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Roberts is a member of both the Jeff “Tain” Watts Quartet and Jeff “Tain’ Watts” “Blue 5” as well as the newest member of Joey DeFrancesco’s quartet “The People.” He is also currently celebrating his seventh solo record “Tales & Tones.” The public is invited to enjoy the rhythms of Troy Roberts.

The opening reception of “Yarn Bombing,” a yarn-inspired exhibition created by the students enrolled in the MOCA Teen Program and Fantastic Fibers Miami’s Artist Books, will run in conjunction with January’s Jazz at MOCA. The exhibition will be located in the MOCA Pavilion, open for all to see, from January 26 – February 2, 2018.

The groundbreaking “How to Unlock a Portal” exhibition by Swedish artist Jacob Felländer will also be open by donation during Jazz at MOCA from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through February 11, 2018.

In honor of Black History Month, Art Gallery 21 and the City of Wilton Manors are proud to present “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend: The Fabric of Their Lives” from Saturday, February 3 – Saturday, March 10. This distinctive exhibit will feature seven original quilts from the collection of Janet Dolland, advocate of the celebrated Gee’s Bend Quilter’s Collective.

Formed in the isolated African American hamlet of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, in the early 20th century, this collective of women ranges in ages from 19 to 90 and has been recognized by such organizations as the U.S. Postal Service, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, N.Y., and the National Museum in Washington, D.C. These quilts symbolize the individuality of the quilters’ multigenerational approach to African American art and culture.

In addition to the exhibit, Dolland will be giving lectures on quilting Saturday, February 3 at Art Gallery 21 and Thursday, February 8 at Old Dillard High School (1001 NW 4th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311) from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Karen Finley’s rave-reviewed solo performance Unicorn Gratitude Mystery explores psychological portrayals of the power that drives American election politics. Set in the recent US political presidential landscape, it takes on citizenship, gender disparity, and abuse of power. The individual cost of public relationships at the expense of privacy becomes divisive with searing psychosexual dynamics of wit and seething revelation. The performance includes magical beings, aggressive thankfulness, and collective intimacy through Shakespearean family nation dramatic traumatics. Playing a unicorn and morphing into a Hillary-like, Trump-like being while enveloping into the blueness of the blue dress of Monica Lewinsky, Finley embodies an experimental nonlinear poetic text that creates a jolt of intuition, analysis, and unnatural disaster of the human kind. Karen Finley is a pioneering interdisciplinary artist who has performed and exhibited internationally. Her recent work includes Mandala: Reimagined Columbus Circle, an interactive walk that examines the symbols and history of Columbus Circle; Artist Anonymous, a self-help meeting for those addicted to art; Written in Sand, a performance of her writings on AIDS; Open Heart, a Holocaust memorial at Camp Gusen, Austria; and Sext Me If You Can, where Finley creates commissioned portraits inspired by “sexts” received from the public. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is thrilled to welcome back Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul. Their repertoire includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia, legendary Miami bassist/composer; Chino Nunez, Grammy-award winning producer; and Jaui Schneider, former pianist/composer of Ray Barretto; along with classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauzá. 
 
The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among others.

Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), a non-profit volunteer-based arts organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, will present its second annual “A Night at the Museum.” Attendees will have the opportunity to browse art selections from “Frank Stella: Experiment and Change,” which will be on display through July 8, 2018 at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The exhibition spans the artist’s 60-year career from the late 1950’s to the present and is composed of approximately 300 paintings, relief sculpture and drawings encompassing his work as an American painter, sculptor and print maker in the areas of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction. Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, will be available to offer expert insight on Stella’s exhibition.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering its monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. Young At Art Museum presents Design YAA, an exciting and fully immersive new world of art and design for visitors learn and play in, from Saturday, October 21 through Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Young At Art Museum, located at 751 SW 121st Ave. in Davie. The exhibition will transform Young At Art’s largest gallery, the Knight gallery, from floor to ceiling by acclaimed mural and installation artists Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre, known as MILAGROS. Their eye-popping patterns and interactive show room spaces will feature a wide range of furniture, clothing and inventions for visitors to explore. Every object, surface and room within the installation will be covered in patterns creating an overwhelming optical experience for guests and their families to take photos in and become a part of!

Visitors can try on custom painted clothing from a bedroom closet to camouflage themselves into the room, dine at a surrealistic kitchen table, or break a sweat in our wacky home gym. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents Lisanne Lyons as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Lyons’ career began immediately following high school as the featured vocalist for three Air Force bands. She currently teaches Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. To date, Lyons has been awarded several DownBeat awards for jazz vocal soloist, jazz vocal choir director and jazz arranger along with being named the Gamma Mu Chapter of Delta Omicron “Music Professor of the Year.”
 
Lyons was the featured performer with Joel Grey during the NBC Orange Bowl half-time show in 1991. She also has headlined at the Ottawa, Detroit and Clearwater Jazz Festivals and La Nuit du Jazz in France. With numerous performing, recording and back-up gigs, Lyons has performed with Woody Herman Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson and Arturo Sandoval to name a few. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will open its fall season with the presentation of Edouard Duval-Carrié: Metamorphosis. The solo exhibition by Duval-Carrié, renowned Haitian-born American artist and Miami resident, will be on display Sept. 7–Nov. 5, 2017. This exhibition not only revises the artist’s work, but also introduces approximately 37 new creations, as well as a recreation of his studio in one of the gallery rooms.

Curated by Anthony Bogues, Ph.D. and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University, Metamorphosis centers on the symbolic and cultural histories of Haiti and the Caribbean, interpreting colonial encounters and their consequences. Central to the changes in this time period were slave rebellions and the Haitian Revolution. Duval-Carrié’s artistic themes are many variations on the historic life of the region, blending his distinct aesthetic with the everyday, creating pieces that represent the Caribbean Diaspora experienced up through the present day.

Works in the exhibition reflect how the region’s flora and fauna were essential to the colonial experience, as seen in the work Red vs. Blue Skirmish. Other works include vignettes of a slave who transforms himself into various forms of animal life; boats transformed into containers of sugar; and disfigured human forms, heads and faces metamorphosing from their symmetrical shapes into things unknown. The Memory Series, mixed media pieces done in resin, reveals the artist as an extraordinary colorist, transforming some of his former artistic themes into a new artistic vision. The exhibition thus creates contemporary echoes of the historical colonial encounter and the construction of the New World, and considers its meanings for today.

“We are delighted to present the work of renowned artist Edouard Duval-Carrié at MOCA,” says Natasha Colebrook-Williams, MOCA’s interim director. “With Duval-Carrie’s extraordinary following, it is a pleasure to exhibit Metamorphosis, an exhibition with new works that have not been shown before. MOCA is proud of its international outlook and the unique exhibitions we share with our audience.”

Admission to MOCA is $5, but free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place from 7–9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 with an admission cost of $10 for the general public and free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents Anibal Berraute – Tango Fusion as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Argentinean piano player, composer, arranger and producer, Berraute fuses the Tango with elements of different musical forms to create a new vibrant harmonic approach.

The group’s repertoire includes rearranged Tangos, as well as Berraute’s original compositions. Several of these pieces are performed with improvisational sections that allow the individual musician to fuse other genres within the Tango. Through this improvisational approach, Berraute delivers an exciting experience that keeps an audience at the edge of their seats.

Guests are invited to don their best white attire for the annual Masterpiece event, a chic cocktail reception featuring mixed media artist Cory Bennett. The party, called “20” for the museum’s 20th anniversary, will feature live entertainment as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer and a signature cocktail.

“Iconic Neo-POP,” a new show created by mixed media artist Cory Bennett, will be featured in the main gallery. Bennett combines pop themes, iconic images and neo-expressionist techniques to produce work that is wary of modern society. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Bennett has his own unique style of art that combines an urban “street” style with the use of found-media, providing the artist with an endless supply of complex and relevant subject matter.

In addition to Bennett, the Florida Watercolor Society will be featured in the East and Kuhn galleries. This 46th exhibition will feature works from Iain Stewart and Bev Jozwiak and is also part of the Society’s annual convention, which will bring nearly 500 artists from around Florida to Coral Springs.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents The French Horn Collective as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. The French Horn Collective is an energetic and progressive band that performs an eclectic variety of Gypsy Jazz, Swing, and modern original French music throughout South Florida. Led by Parisian musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and songwriter Vincent Raffard, the diverse group consists of highly talented musicians from various musical backgrounds.

The French Horn Collective finds inspiration from genres such as Gypsy Jazz, Hot Swing, Ska and Polka, formulating the group’s unique, progressive sound. The French Horn kicked off its Gypsy project with a new album, “The French Horn Collective: Hot Club of Miami,” which features traditional acoustic instruments from the Gypsy Jazz genre. The band performs live across South Florida in settings such as festivals, restaurants, bars, private parties, radio shows, corporate affairs and even burlesque acts, with personnel ranging from a small trio to a large eight-piece band.

Swing into summer with the French-infused Gypsy Jazz of The French Horn Collective! The museum galleries will be open by donation from 7–10 p.m.

Join Girls’ Club and artist Harumi Abe for a hands-on painting workshop, creating small scale landscapes with watercolor. Harumi will lead a demonstration on basic watercolor elements, techniques, practices and alternative methods. Working with the ongoing theme of artist as historical explorer, the workshop invites participants to travel via Instagram to source vistas for the creation of small-scale landscape paintings.

All materials provided, including watercolor paints, paints, brushes, masking tape, pencils, etc. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite tools to use as well. This workshop is for all skill levels.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is launching its summer season with the presentation of South Florida Cultural Consortium. In cooperation with Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the group exhibition presents works by artists exclusively from South Florida and is curated by Maria Elena Ortiz from the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

The South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) is the largest government-sponsored grant program in the U.S. for artists living in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and Martin Counties. This exhibition will showcase 25 artists who won the prize in 2014 and 2016. South Florida Cultural Consortium celebrates the originality and potential of these South Florida artists, who continue to pave their way as expressive leaders of their generation. The exhibition will be on display from June 8 through August 6, 2017.

The artists’ reception will be open from 7-9 p.m. and will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet and greet featured artists and be immersed in to works that collectively embody the diverse culture of our community.

Come explore Miami’s historic downtown like an architect! See our city’s landmark buildings through an architect’s eyes, using a sketchbook and pen. Learn to draw by sketching some of downtown Miami’s historic landmarks, like the Dade County Courthouse, the Church of Gesù and the old US Post Office Building, home of MCAD! This 2-hour course is open to beginners and novices of all ages who love architecture and want to explore it through drawing.

In celebration of Haitian Heritage Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents The Haiti Jazz Roots Project as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. The Haiti Jazz Roots Project is an electric blend of outstanding musicians performing jazz-infused folkloric Haitian music. Led by guitarist Jean Chardavoine, the group comprises of Jennifer Louis (vocals), Mike Levine (piano/keys), Kenneth Jiménez (bass), Matisou Légba (Haitian drams) and Shay Eisten (drums).

Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, Jean Chardavoine is a concrete manifestation of the new emerging genre “Haitian Jazz.” Jennifer Louis is a Miami based vocalist whose performance experience can best be described as nothing short of electric. Mike Levine is a man of many talents whose career is a blend of different aspects of music and Kenneth Jimenez is a young talent emerging in the South Florida Jazz scene. Matisou Légba, a well-known Haitian drummer, has been studying and playing the traditional Vodou rites and tempos for over 25 years. This talented mix of musicians creates a unique music experience unlike any other.

Kick off the holiday weekend by enjoying the jazz-infused Haitian music of The Haiti Jazz Roots Project. The museum galleries will be open by donation from 7–10 p.m.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor (1948-2015) developed Synergism as a new art method through a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.

Artist-led hands on workshop. Participants should bring two to three everyday objects (wood, leather, rubber, ceramics, metal, no fabrics) with a personal connection to their lives and hometown. Objects will be combined to create a community collage/art piece reflective of Ekaterina and Victor Khromin’s aesthetics. Participants will share personal histories and discuss contemporary art aesthetics.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. Throughout the months of April and May, there will be different workshops to learn about the elements of art through the style of Synergism.

Based on traditional Russian fairy tales, children’s stories, and folk tales, the Soviet Union produced a stunning array of animated films which have been recognized as classic masterpieces of animation. This family-friendly afternoon will feature storytelling and animation by masters such as Yuriy Norshteyn, Ivan Ivanov-Vano, Lev Atamanov, Boris Dehzhkin, and others.

Whether you are an architect or just love architecture, this tour is for you!

Tour departs from MCAD rain or shine. All tickets are $20 or $15 for seniors and students. Each adult ticket admits one child under the age of 8 for free. Advance reservations online are required. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is launching its spring season with the presentation of “Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin.” With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor developed Synergism as a new art form through the use of a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.

Synergism centers on a search for freedom of expression, and captures the journey of this husband-and-wife team from their Soviet past to their emigration to the United States. The exhibition will feature paintings, installations and video by the Khromins, and will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017.

The artist reception will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet and greet Ekaterina and exhibition curator Maria Zavialova.

Meet and greet the three local artists who are currently exhibiting their work, through May 20, 2017, at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Talk first-hand with pop culture artist Stan Slutsky, charcoal artist Virginia Fifield and caricaturist Alisa Grodsky while enjoying complimentary refreshments.

Slutsky skillfully employs geometric shapes that are rooted in Egyptian and classical Greek antiquity, while Fifield’s seemingly familiar subjects encourage a deeper contemplation about man’s relationship with nature. Grodsky’s exhibition tells the story of her life as a professional artist and her unique ability to articulate a message.

Pneumatikos – A Spiritual Gift
Broward County resident Virginia Fifield’s seemingly familiar subjects in her charcoal drawings encourage a deeper contemplation about man’s relationship with nature. Her work is deliberately devoid of context and color to strip away all stylized associations to her subjects.

My Life as an Artist: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Recently relocating from New York City, Alisa Grodsky’s exhibition tells the story of her life as a professional artist and her unique ability to articulate a message.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is featuring Karina Iglesias as part of the monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Born and raised in Miami to Honduran parents, Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Iglesias has highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, which showcases her strong elements of innovation and brings a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

In 2013, Iglesias was selected as a top contestant on NBC’s hit show “The Voice.” Her incredible performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” turned into a YouTube sensation overnight, and every judge had glowing comments after her performances. In 2012, Iglesias sang a duet with Franco de Vita and was featured in his live DVD album, “En Primera Fila,” which won two Latin GRAMMY Awards®. She has also shared the stage with artists including Beatriz Luengo, Alejandra Guzmán and Gilberto Santa Rosa. The public is invited to come sit under the stars and enjoy the pure soul music of Iglesias.

The museum galleries will be open by donation from 7–10 p.m.
