In observance of National Mentoring Month in January, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami is teaming up with the Miami HEAT to help elevate awareness and give Miamians opportunities to become mentors for local youths at risk. BBBS is a nonprofit organization supporting at-risk children through adult mentor relationships.

National Mentoring Month was created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, to focus national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits can work together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for youths.

During the 7:30 pm games at the AmericanAirlines Arena on January 20, 23, and 27, tables will be set up at the following locations to inform potential volunteers of the various programming alternatives available:
• January 20 (Oklahoma City Thunder): Section 115 (Inner Wall)
• January 23 (Indiana Pacers): Section 102 (Inner Wall)
• January 27 (Milwaukee Bucks): Section 102 (Inner Wall)
The arena is located at 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33132.

These activities are part of the organization’s “Man Drive” to recruit more male volunteers. While all volunteers are welcomed, BBBS is particularly interested in male volunteers at this time in order to help reduce the waiting list of boys in need of mentors.

For the twelfth consecutive year, Miami Children’s Museum is proud to present ArtKids at Art Basel Miami Beach. From mixed media to building blocks and beyond, a variety of art exploration stations will be available for budding young artists to create their own original works of art.

This year again features an additional program for ArtKids at Art Basel. For the second year MCM in partnership with Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation will offer the opportunity for participating children there to work with a renowned artist. This year will feature Patrick Rowe teaching the art of mobile print making. Patrick started Mobile Print Power in March 2013. With a background in printmaking and public art, Patrick wanted to bring silkscreen printmaking into public space. He is also interested in art education and works with the group as they develop strategies to exchange knowledge with others in public space. Children are also invited to join Patrick Rush on Sunday, November, 30 from 4 to 5:30 PM at the Miami Children’s Museum 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island for a session to create their own print mobiles.

ArtKids welcomes children ages 4 – 12 to stay in the room for up to 3 hours at a time; children younger than 4 may also visit with a caretaker. ArtKids is supervised and staffed by Miami Children’s Museum Educators, volunteers, Donald Lambert and students and teachers from the New World School of the Arts and selected artists.

Custom bike manufacturer Republic Bike is calling all kids for a mini kiddie concert ft. local musician Raffa Jo Harris! Republic Bike will take over the Wynwood Walls to celebrate the launch of their limited edition Republic Kids Cargo Bike. Come on out this Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm to groove to the tunes of Raffa Jo Harris while testing out the new kids bikes and enjoying the refreshing taste of Perrier.

The Kids Bikes: Inspired by classic, three-wheeled cargo bikes, the highlight of this adorable, design-conscious ride is the front wooden crate, perfect for hauling beginner typography books, Pantone/Crayola conversion charts, or even little puppy Gehry (little sister definitely not recommended). Traditionally used for transporting more prosaic loads, the adult version of this inverted tricycle of sorts is commonly seen throughout the streets of cycle happy Europe toting everything from baguettes to kinderen. Republic Bike shrink-rayed this design to offer precocious American children a chic, yet practical starter bicycle alternative.

Talk About it Tuesday: Heroes Unite

o38_73_37-m

Heroes Unite is a program created to provide opportunities that can nurture and empower communities through mentoring, volunteering and family engagement. Heroes Unite strengthens communities by teaching them about art, culture and education. They strive to serve people in need and give them a safer and healthier life.

Heroes Unite was created in 1994. They began by supporting families from the Ronald McDonald house. Heroes Unite provided support to families that were going through a tough time caring for their terminally ill children. Heroes Unite provided therapy to siblings and parents of patients as well as engaged them in theatre productions. They also provided these services for people going through AIDS treatment. They offered a fun and creative outlet for people going through a hard time.  In 1999, Heroes Unite restructured their program and offered an after school session that would help transform the lives of children by teaching them about Chinese martial arts.

Heroes Unite now has over 500 students in their program. From modest beginnings Heroes Unite has come a long way in changing the lives of youth and families in Miami. Through art, culture, and education, Heroes Unite has had an enormous positive impact on its participants and in the community.

Like what you’ve heard about Heroes Unite? Support them on Facebook or follow this link for more information on volunteering or interning!

GO GO MOAD! Pop Up Kids Programs at MDC Museum of Art + Design, Creative Kids Project: Andy Warhol

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to tour The Influencers II exhibition and learn about the elements of art by painting, drawing and sculpting in the style of renowned artists in the exhibition. Parents and visitors are encouraged to stay and create a special project with their children based on the legendary artist Andy Warhol.

Renowned artist Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in the working-class neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At an early age, he was afflicted with a rare neurological disorder which pushed him to take comfort in a world of his own within celebrity magazines and DC comic books. As a young adult, he experimented with several invented adaptations of his own identity. In this exploration, he decided to drop the “a” from his last name upon moving to New York.

Warhol graduated with a degree in Pictorial Design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. New York proved to be a successful move for Warhol as he found abundant work as a commercial artist. He worked with posh companies such as Columbia Records, Glamour Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, NBC, Tiffany & Co., and Vogue. Warhol established his career as a praised graphic artist then shifted his focus to painting and drawing. Warhol’s paintings and prints grew to incorporate the techniques he developed as a commercial illustrator. In 1956, The Museum of Modern Art included him in his first group show.

It was the work he produced in the 1960’s and early 1970’s that solidified Warhol as a national icon. Becoming the symbol for the movement Pop Art, Warhol is best known for his iconic paintings of Campbell’s soup cans, Coca Cola bottles, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe.

Inter Academy Florida is the first youth soccer academy in the USA affiliated with F.C. Internazionale (widely known as Inter Milan) and is led by Riccardo Ferri, a former Inter and Italian National Team player himself. This project aims at developing kids’ soccer talents and forming them into great players by employing the training philosophy and methodology used by both F.C. Inter adult and youth teams. Inter Academy Florida is geared towards boys and girls 4-17 and offers three different program options: Camp, Academy, and Recreational. The summer camp program officially begins on June 9th and will run through August 1st in 1-week sessions; it is currently open for enrollment online and will also be accepting registrations during open house event. For optimal convenience, camp program will be offering day and evening sessions at four different locations, two in Miami-Dade County and two in Broward County. Young soccer lovers will not want to pass the opportunity to join this world-class academy.

The uniqueness of Inter Academy Florida lies in the direct access members will have to training resources of the professional soccer team abroad, and having a former pro soccer player fronting the entire program. These dynamics will allow participants to get first-hand game strategy, coaching and structured talent development, in order to improve their game in a fun and safe environment. Inter Academy Florida has three programs for kids 4-17: Camp (summer season June 9 – August 1, 2014; camps also available during winter and spring in 1-week sessions), Elite Academy (tryouts for 2014-2015 competitive season are May 27 – June 1, 2014 and training will start in August), and Recreational (available during fall and spring in 9-week sessions). Also available, private lessons with Riccardo Ferri, scouting days with college and professional coaches, and Inter Academy Florida Cares (free games for kids with disabilities).

Young Performers Light Up the Night for Young Talent Big Dreams Finals
By Michael R. Malone, The Children’s Trust

Before beginning his original spoken word piece for the Young Talent Big Dreams finals, David Woodward paused in front of the microphone and closed his eyes, seeming to disappear.

Then he opened his eyes and launched his emotional performance, a fusion of words and gestures that spoke of the frustration and sometimes fury of the many boys and young men in Woodward’s Little Havana neighborhood who seek to rise above their poverty and shatter the stereotypes that weigh against them.

For his originality and creativity, Woodward, a 16-year-old junior and one of the top writers in his AP English course at SLAM Miami Charter Middle/High School, was named the overall Grand Prize Winner of Young Talent Big Dreams. This year marked the fourth and most ambitious rendition of the countywide talent contest, coordinated by the Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre and sponsored by The Children’s Trust.
The cadre of judges, all professional artists or art critics, chose Woodward over a host of amazingly talented young musicians, dancers, composers and wordsmiths performing in a range of categories, both individual and group. For the top prize, Woodward received $500 in cash and a free trip for two – air fare, hotel and passes – to attend the live American Idol finale in Los Angeles, CA, courtesy of WSVN CH7.
Woodward, who’s been rhyming, rapping and creating original poetry since elementary school, credited his English teacher, Crystal Espinosa, at SLAM for helping him craft his award-winning performance piece. With her guidance, he revised the piece more than twenty times, working steadily on it for more than a month.

“Though I like to write, I wasn’t much of a reader before. The experience of competing in YTBD really taught me about perfecting my writing craft,” said Woodward, nicknamed the “silent assassin” by his classmates for the riveting power and precision infused in his work.

Winners were chosen for each of the categories, and 27 acts competed in all in the finals held Saturday, May 3 at the Actor’s Playhouse. These contestants were selected from the hundreds that participated over the past four months in the total seven auditions held at venues around the county.

“Every year the talent gets better and better, and the dreams get bigger and bigger for this competition,” said Charles M. Auslander, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust, adding that “The Trust is dedicated to helping to encourage the dreams of the children of Miami-Dade County.

Throughout the finals night as he has at all the auditions, emcee Earl Maulding kept the audience caffeinated with his infectious good humor as he sang the high praises of the performers who were competing and those who auditioned over the past few months.
¨These kids are just beyond believing. For many of them this contest is the first time that they walk onto a stage for an audition, but to hear and see them – you’d never know it. Their talents – and courage – are just off the charts,” commented Maulding, who directs the Young Audiences Theatre at Actors’ Playhouse.

Individual first-place winners in each category received $200. Ysabella Reyes, a 10-year-old who studies dance at Dance Hall and who dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer and choreographer wooed judges with her Individual Dance performance. Abdias L. Armenteros, a 9th grade student at Miami Union Academy took top prize in Individual Musical Instrument with his spirited saxophone performance. In the relatively new category for Individual Original Composition, Javmar Perez-Contreras, a 14-year-old pianist who attends Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High School, won first prize in stiff competition.

Carolina Rivero, an 8th-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle, delivered a spirited rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to win Individual Vocal Pop/Rock/Rap. Judges awarded top prize for Individual Vocal Theatre/Jazz/Classical to Amanda Gonzalez-Piloto, a freshman vocalist at the New World School of the Arts, who delighted the audience with her version of “Taylor the Latte Boy.”

In Bands competition, One Love, comprised of five young musicians – Carina Ubinas, 15, Joshua Paulus-Rosenow, 15, Carlos Ubinas, 14, Michael Ubinas, 11, and Gabriela Ubinas, 9 – who’ve been performing together just a few months, took top prize. Each musician received $50. In Group Dance, Monica Delgado, an 8th grader at Coral Way K-8, and Anne Wright, an 8th grader at Westminister Christian School, won top honors and $100 each. Both are dancers with the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. Imani Coker, 16, and Naya Schere, 17, won top honors for Group Musical Instrument for their viola duet. Both are musicians in Coral Reef Senior High’s Orchestra Magnet. The two also received $100 each.

All category winners received master classes taught by local professionals and opportunities to attend a range of professional performances over the coming year; a pair of subscriptions to the Actors’ Playhouse 2014-15 Mainstage Season; local restaurant certificates; and professional headshots for their portfolios from Alberto Romeu Photography. The Individual Dance Winner also received a full scholarship to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.

Judges for the finals performance included: David Arisco, artistic director at Actors’ Playhouse; Lynn Martinez, WSVN CH7 News Anchor; Mary Carmen Catoya, Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet; Howard Cohen, Features Writer, The Miami Herald; Natalie Lewis-Schere, Co-Founder and Executive Director of PATH; and Joel Someillan, Award-winning musical producer of Nickelodeon’s Dora The Explorer and Go Diego Go! TV shows.

Early in the evening, Actors’ Playhouse executive producing director Barbara Stein welcomed local dignitaries and graciously thanked the many event sponsors. At the end of the night, the stage was filled with beaming contestants, purple Finalist medallions swinging at their necks. Stein’s welcome words still echoed in the confettied air.

“This has been the most amazing competition, one that inspires the dreams of so many and that we’re so glad to be a part of. Nobody’s leaving here tonight who’s not a first-class winner.

Nobody’s leaving here tonight who’s not a first-class winner.”

The painting will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9am-4pm. The students have been working in the Education Effect Mural program at Miami Northwestern. City Theatre has packed up its shorts and hit the road for the 2014 Shorts 4 Kids Tour. This unique educational outreach program introduces children to the art of theatre through age appropriate, socially relevant, entertaining and exciting short plays that appeal to young audiences in bite-size portions.

City Theatre’s Shorts 4 Kids features a selection of three 10-minute short plays that focus on important issues such as bullying, self-esteem and acceptance. The City Theatre Acting Company, comprised of talented young artists from across South Florida, will engage the audience in a lively question and answer period after each performance. The plays and talk back periods act as a spring board for further discussion of relevant issues that challenge today’s youth. Online study guides are available on City Theatre’s website to help introduce students to the short play format and subject matter of the performances: www.citytheatre.com.

This year’s Shorts 4 Kids is directed by City Theatre’s Assistant Artistic Director Mcley LaFrance, and includes three new short plays by Jason Edelstein and Mary Sansone:

Sword Fate Online
by Jason Edelstein
Riza is enthusiastic about joining an online game called Sword Fate Online, when she runs into the most popular team called Heroes of the Hand. She is eager to impress them but is surprised that they are less than friendly. Will she falter in the face of adversity or will this be a story for the ages?

Mr. Nomis
by Mary Sansone
The last place Beau wants to be after school is playing with his buddy Robert’s little sister in the front yard. But Robert insists that having a ceremony for his little sister’s pet is more important than playing Madden. Will Beau help Robert or will he be the reason for a disastrous occasion?

Art Basil Basel
by Mary Sansone
Erik’s been waiting all year to go to Art Basel but what happens when he discovers that rumors are being spread about him that may jeopardize the trip.

The Shorts 4 Kids acting company and creative team features Andre Russell (Musical Director/Sound Designer/Sound Engineer), Jason Edelstein (Actor/Playwright), Mary Sanson (Actor/Playwright/Set Designer), Stephanie White (Actor/Dance Choreographer), Jovon Jacobs (Actor), Kaitlin Sarnacki (Costume and Prop Design), Georgina Delgado (Production Stage Manager) and David Diaz (Sound Technician).

The Shorts 4 Kids tour is made possible with the support of our Season Sponsors: Carnival Corporation & PLC and Key Biscayne Community Foundation,The Miami-Dade School Board Members Dr. Lawrence Feldman, Dr. Marta Perez, Dr. Martin Karp, Ms. Raquel Regalado and Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway, along with The Mayor and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Coral Gables, Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A., Wille Family Foundation, Citizens Interested in Arts.

This January, Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) is proud to offer new Kindermusik classes, which will give local parents the opportunity to develop their child’s fundamental skills through music and movement under the guidance of a licensed educator. MCM’s Kindermusik classes offer age-appropriate activities for newborns, infants and crawlers that strengthen early parent-child bonds, foster child development understanding, and improve communication skills. MCM’s Kindermusik classes will be offered January 6th – May 23rd, 2014 and include Cuddle & Bounce, for 0 and 1 year olds, Sing & Play, for 1 and 2 year olds, and Wiggle & Grow, for 2 and 3 year olds.

Cuddle & Bounce
0 – 1 year olds
With age-appropriate activities for newborns, infants and crawlers, this parent-child music and movement class will help you strengthen those early parent-child bonds, understand your baby’s development, and heavily focus on child development and communication with your baby. You and your baby will enjoy instrument play, dance, exploration time, and together time—and you’ll get expert advice and parenting resources based on the most recent research in baby development.

Sing & Play
1 – 2 year olds
This new Kindermusik curriculum focuses on your child’s beginning movement, helping to build the muscles your young toddler needs to walk, run, and climb; and on vocal development, helping to nurture your child’s speaking and singing voice. With a mix of both parent-child joint activities and child-focused activities, you’ll be able to join right in on all the singing and dancing while also getting the chance to observe how your young toddler learns on his or her own.

Wiggle & Grow
2 – 3 year olds
This music-filled class celebrates the unique joys of your growing child. Each week your child will love singing, dancing, and playing instruments with you and her new friends and you’ll love helping her practice a wide variety of abilities such as gross and fine motor skills, turn-taking, social skills, and active listening. In class, we’ll also share tips and ideas for using music throughout the week.
