Glory House of Miami, a non-profit organization, will host the “Home Sweet Home” event in an effort to create awareness and and raise the necessary funds to provide a home for 18-25 year old female survivors of sex trafficking.

Popular television and Radio Personality, Rick Sanchez, will serve as Master of Ceremonies at this purpose-driven event and among the evening’s talents are: Monique Abbadie, finalist in NBC’s “The Voice”; Jazmin, International Singer with Sono Rec Productions; Rudy Gil, formerly of Secret Society; Louis Amanti, International Jazz singer; Tony Swing, International American Singer/Actor; and more celebrity surprises soon to be announced!

VIP guests will include: City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado; Katherine Fernandez-Rundle – Miami-Dade County State Attorney (to be confirmed); Susan Dechovitz – Director of Human Trafficking Task Force, Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office (to be confirmed); Dawn Thompson – Assistant Executive Director, Kristi House; Alberto Carvalho – Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (to be confirmed); Detective Lorraine Szczepanik – Strategic Investigations Division ICAC/Human Trafficking, Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Approximately 27 million men, women, and children are enslaved and trafficked worldwide. Florida is one of the top destinations for trafficking victims in the United States, along with New York and California. Distressingly, in Miami alone, $235 million dollars are generated through the exploitation of adults, teens, and children held captive in this city. Children are targeted through deceptive tactics employed by recruiters and the average age of entry is at the tender age of twelve.

“Human Trafficking, the commercial sexual exploitation of another human being, is a despicable crime whose victims inevitably suffer physical and psychological trauma” says State Attorney, Katherine Fernandez-Rundle. And she adds “Those individuals and community groups that reach out to assist victims of Human Trafficking deserve our support and commendation — Glory House is to be applauded for its determination to see that victims have a sanctuary when they break the chains binding them to their trafficker.”

The “Home Sweet Home” event is designed to raise the needed funds to provide a home and safe environment where rescued victims may be healed and fully restored. Glory House of Miami’s “Home Sweet Home” will offer medical, spiritual, mental health, social, legal support; reintegration, education, arts, vocational training, job and life skills training to recover and give these 18-25 year old female survivors a second chance at rebuilding their lives.

“The success of this wonderful event will bring us one step closer to our goal of acquiring a permanent long-term safe home for the sex traffic survivors, where their basic needs will be provided for in addition to professional counseling to get them on the road to healing and restoration” comments Betty Lara, Executive Director of Glory House of Miami. She adds,”community support is an essential component — every ticket purchased will help to make a difference.”

The event agenda will include a 15-minute presentation on Human Trafficking, raffles, high-end auction items and raffles.

The 2013 smash debut of Mouse King featured two sold-out shows. Lovers of what is sure to become a new holiday classic, conceived by Sesame Street veteran Noel MacNeal and featuring music by South Florida composer Jim Camacho, will now have three chances to take it in. An art installation slash public display of happiness, The Happy Wall is a giant chalkboard creation where you’re invited to answer the question, “What makes YOU happy?”

The Happy Wall encourages ALL people — visitors and locals of all ages, interests and backgrounds — to pick up a piece of chalk and jump headfirst into a happiness movement! Draw, write, doodle — express your happiness however you wish.

During the wall’s appearance in Cocowalk, there’ll be a whole host of programming revolving around it including live music, art, giveaways and more!

The Happy Wall is presented by Happify, an amazing website and app that empowers people to shift their mindsets and achieve higher levels of happiness and emotional well-being through fun, science-based activities and games. As Happify says, “Science has shown that happiness is winnable.”

The Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation is set to host its 38th Annual Christmas Gala, with support from BMW, Bacardi and Coca-Cola. Proceeds from the annual fundraising event will benefit various Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation projects, including “A Toy for Every Child” and “Adopt-a-Family” holiday initiatives.

“For more than three decades, our Annual Christmas Gala has afforded the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana the opportunity to touch the lives of those less fortunate by distributing thousands of cherished gifts and warm meals during the holidays,” said Henry Jimenez, chairman of the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation. “With the help of our corporate and community partners, as well as numerous volunteers, we can continue to further our mission to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of thousands of South Florida children and their families.”

Beginning at 8 p.m., guests will dance to the rhythm of live performances by internationally renowned artists Grupo Niche, Hansel Y Raul, and Lime. Attendees will also enjoy an open bar and buffet stations featuring local cuisine. Formal attire will be strictly enforced.

Additional benefiting foundation projects include the annual Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Christmas Fair, Future Leaders through Education Scholarship Fund, and many more community goodwill youth initiatives.

City Theatre will serve up a sizzling series of Florida-inspired short plays entitled Swamp Shorts on Monday, November 17 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Miami Book Fair International’s newest attraction The Swamp.

The Swamp is a pop-up lounge (think Jimbo’s meets the Delano) that showcases Florida stories, music, dance, film, history, and art. All week long, Swamp events exploring the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness, and downright “weirdness” of life in Florida will be offered free of charge.

As a partner of Miami Book Fair International and the Center for Theatre and Literature at Miami Dade College, City Theatre was asked to solicit and curate a selection of shorts plays that align with The Swamp’s mission to reflect the personalities that animate Florida’s, and specifically Miami’s, cultural scene. A call for scripts was sent to homegrown playwrights, resulting in City Theatre’s Swamp Shorts, a vibrant one-night-only collection of readings of new short plays written by South Florida playwrights near and far, that celebrate the stories, characters, patois and sabor of the local community and Sunshine State.

Directed by City Theatre Guest Artist Gail Garrison, Swamp Shorts will be performed by The Swamp Troupe Acting Ensemble: Joshua Jean Baptiste, Ashley Chang, Chasity Hart, Andres Maldonado, David Kwiat, Jessica Brooke Sandford, Karen Stephens and Michael Uribe.

Two of the region’s literary disrupters combine to present this free event from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17 at The Swamp, located in the big tent at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus on the southeast corner of NE Third Street and Second Avenue. What is the most direct link between the art week in Basel and Miami? The answer came curiosly by an Italian painter – Guido Buganza – that this year brings in Miami a collection of paintings inspired by his last trip in the Swiss city during Art Basel. But the artistic challenge is still open, because the exhibition – project aims to bring in Basel 2015 a series of paintings that will be created by the vibrations of the trip to Miami during these December.

The project, at its first edition this year, is a bet on the future that aims to create a potentially infinite exhibition in the cities symbol of art in the world.

O. Ascanio Gallery is opening a major exhibition of work by celebrated illustrator, sculptor and public artist Jorge Blanco. Over three decades, Blanco has built a following of devotees and collectors. First with his beloved comic strip “El Naufrago,” (The Castaway), and later through his large-scale geometrical sculptures, 26 of which have been commissioned publicly in the United States, Latin America and Asia.

Jorge Blanco’s signature creations offer universal appeal; they are testaments to the glory of passion and optimism of everyday life. He translates poetic humor as an illustrator into vivacious sculptures that engage viewers with an evocative and distinct choreography. Bright primary colors and geometric shapes form athletes, fruit, animals and abstractions.

This retrospective is bringing together diverse works across mediums showcasing Blanco’s most recognizable projects. Included are a series of watercolors inspired by “The Castaway,” his graphic and illustrative work in children’s storybooks, big and small collectible sculptures, and pieces from his decorative design line, such as coffee tables, benches, design mugs and more.

Jorge Blanco lives and works in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to his public art commissions, he has created numerous works for private collectors in Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, France, Venezuela, Uruguay, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, China, Indonesia, Japan, the Dominican Republic and the USA. He’s the recipient of multiple accolades, most recent is the DCOTA Stars of Design 2013.

Pamela Z is a composer/performer and media artist who makes solo works combining a wide range of vocal techniques with electronic processing, samples, gesture activated MIDI controllers, and video. She has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. Her work has been presented at venues and exhibitions including Bang on a Can (NY), the Japan Interlink Festival, Other Minds (SF), the Venice Biennale, and the Dakar Biennale. She’s created installation works and has composed scores for dance, film, and new music chamber ensembles. Join MANO Fine Art for their new exhibit “Meninas Unwrapped”, a nod to the popularity of Diego Velazquez’s ICONIC motif la menilna interpreted by artists Daniel Garcia and MANO. Velazquez would be pleased.

The interpretation of the world’s masterpieces is hardly a new phenomenon. Artists often look to the past to learn from the old masters. In “Some Are Meninas” contemporary artists: Daniel Garcia and MANO take on Diego Velazquez, interpreting his famed 1656 painting, “Las Meninas”, considered one of the greatest masterpieces ever painted.

The exhibit is not only a matter of looking back at the past but also a nod to the popularity of the iconic motif, it seems that every generation has made Velazquez’s “meninas” a reflection of their own, hundreds of artists from Picasso to Vik Muniz have been inspired by the works’ enigmatic qualities. Visual artist, Alex Yudzon, who traveled from Moscow to Washington D.C and then Brooklyn has finally landed in Miami for his first local exhibit showcasing his impressive collection of work reflecting this journey. The exhibition, titled “The Great American Novel and Other Stories,” will premier at Art Bastion, in conjunction with Wynwood Art Walk. Also featured in this thought-provoking exhibit are works made almost entirely out of sunflower seed shells. Inspired by Yudzon’s childhood in Moscow, the pieces in this collection use iconic Russian imagery to revisit the failed ideals of the Soviet era. This is his first solo exhibition in Miami.

The Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA) is asking you to show us your favorite Miami Beach moments, places and spaces! From clear blue waters to an astounding art piece, show us an original video montage composed of Miami Beach places, scenery and everything in between. Other Miami Beach fans will vote on your entries and the top ten entries with the most likes will be chosen as semi-finalists. Once you post a video, the post is automatically shared on your Facebook profile, prompting your friends to vote too!

The MBVCA wants to share your Favorite Moments in Miami Beach with the world, so tell us what they are! The contest begins on November 4, 2014 and ends at 11:59pm on December 31, 2014. Upload the video to the MBVCA Facebook Contest page and email a hi-res version to photocontestmiamibeach@miamibeachvca.com.

Prizes:

First place is a GoPro Hero4, valued at $499.99.
Second place is an iPad Air, valued at $399.
Third place is a Visa gift card for $200.

Winners will receive prizes within six months of the close of the contest. Prizes will be physically mailed to the address provided by the winners. Any prizes returned to the MBVCA or not received by the winner because of an incorrect address provided to the MBVCA shall be the sole responsibility of the recipient.

The contest is open to anyone 18 years of age or older as of November 4, 2014. Only three (3) entries may be submitted per email address/per person.

Entries must be a compilation of video clips only and must not include any still photographs. All footage must incorporate Miami Beach city scenery, i.e. you may spotlight your favorite hotel under the circumstances that Miami Beach city, shore, water or skyline is featured.

Following a whirlwind 24-hour trip to Mexico, photographer Seth Browarnik has curated an original series of images of the FACUNDO Rum Collection, the first luxury collection of sipping rums from BACARDÍ, to form a stunning 30+ photography exhibit bringing the “art of rum” to life. These photographs tell the story of not only the meticulous production process of hand bottling the FACUNDO Rum Collection, a product sourced from the Bacardi family’s Private Reserves, but of the community, the heritage, and artistry one finds along the way.

Accompanied by BACARDÍ Brand Master David Cid, Browarnik traveled to Tultitlán, the BACARDÍ aging & blending facility where FACUNDO is bottled. They also stayed in La Galarza, a historic BACARDÍ distillery that showcases the rum company’s commitment to heritage and the legacy of founder Don Facundo Bacardi Massó. During the trip, Browarnik discovered what’s really behind the rum barrel: the people, the history, and the passion that is involved in the art of rum-making.

Open to the public for one day only in the Miami Design District, guests can experience the intimate journey Browarnik captured firsthand. Guests will also be able to experience the four variants from the FACUNDO Rum Collection neat or on the rocks as they view the photographs and relive the story as told though the exhibit.

Ruben Santurian is a world-renowned artist who is now launching his latest series: Trashformers – which are sculptures made of trash and recyclable materials in the shape of who will be speaking about the relationship between men and nature through art. His new series Trashformers will be showcased at Nina Torres Fine Art.

The program will start with a introduction by gallery owner Nina Torres, who will touch on Art as a tool of raising awareness; Brett Bibeau, from the Miami River Commission will talk about the Miami River, its ecological challenges, and its relationship with the Miami River Fair. The last couple of years Top Turkey has been held in Broward County BUT this year it makes its first Miami-Dade County appearance on Saturday Night November 15th from 5-10PM at Magic City Casino (right near the Miami International Airport).

Class 1968,Guido Buganza is one of the most respected Italian set designers . He has made opera productions such as the Puritans of Bellini and Cherubini’s Medea, as well as dozens of dramas in Italy and worldwide .

Theatrical career alongside the pictorial, he will exhibit for the first time during Art Basel Miami 2014 at the Hangar Gallery in Wynwood , Miami, with a selection of his paintings.

The artist was present at the Venice Biennale in 2008 with his play and has worked with Nobel Prize Dario Fo and Harold Pinter , as well as with Peter Greenaway.

His figurative painting evokes imagery of great lyricism, abandonment and nostalgia, a barren environment or a detail that most people do not consider.

Miami Fashion Network, LLC (MFN) will host their 1 year anniversary with a Kickoff to Art Basel event at the newly opened Vintro Hotel in South Beach.

MFN will feature member designers and artists in front of over 150 exclusive guests from Miami’s creative and entrepreneurial community. Miami artist Hector Maldonado will exhibit works in preparation for his participation in the Red Dot Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach. The two queens of Triumphant Spells share a love for magical and mystical realms. Be ready to experience drawings, sculptures, installations and what not’s. the unusual few and widely separated characters of their work will give light to the fine incantation.

Mrs. Maitejosune Urrechagas artwork has been displayed national and internationally since 2005. Her DIY attitude is very compelling and very much alive which audiences continue to respond with enthusiasm.

She has grown to fancy towards group projects, which usually include oddball outcomes such as designing mini refrigerators to pimp my kart to the mind the snails project which ran during Miami’s Art Basel on Dec of 2006-2007, which she received a nod from the Miami new Times in their Best of Issue. TO her musical performance Pocket of Lollipops that joined forces with her husband and received top 5 song in South Florida.

She has curated, exhibited and performed at various art spaces and live music venues around the US. Including Dorsch Gallery, SwampSpace, Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Verge Art Fair, ArtFormz Gallery, and the traditional rock settings.
She was one of three artist chosen to paint the 7-foot alligator sculptures for Sawgrass Mills “Paying tribute to woman”

Lady Lauren Shapiro
is a South Florida native, and her artwork contains elements of both nature and the supernatural. Living in Florida has influenced her work through an appreciation and deep fascination with the ocean and all of its life forms. Lauren holds a BFA from Florida Atlantic University, and is currently a Graduate Fellow pursing an MFA in ceramics at the University of Miami.
She has fully immersed herself in the South Florida artist community as both teacher and artist. Previous to applying for candidacy of a Masters at the University of Miami, Lauren worked as an outreach instructor and in-house workshop leader at the Boca Museum of art and ceramics instructor at the Boca Raton Art School.
Her work in this series is inspired by metamorphosis, the connection between humans and nature, and how the actions of one will affect the other. The imagery that can be found in the artwork includes textures in nature, symbols from legends and folklore, as well as natural science and the microscopic world. Also turning to her dreams and subconscious thoughts she relies on intuition to guide her through the development of the work.
Her work has been exhibited at Museums and galleries in South Florida, to name a few: the Projects Space in FAT Village, The Lowe Museum, Girls Club, Locust Projects, and she has work in the private collection of Francie Bishop Good.

Art students from 15 Miami-Dade Schools who created sculptures from junk bicycles will compete this Saturday for the prize of “Best Recycling Project” in a charity benefit contest hosted by Gran Fondo Italia.

Circo Massimo Entertainment (CME), with the help of the City of Miami Beach, collected junk bicycles from the streets and gave them to 15 schools of the Miami-Dade district, selected by ODLI, Inc. (Organization for the Development of the Italian Language) and IIPA (Italian International Parent Association) under the Italian Consulate patronage. Students have disassembled, attached, painted and glued parts of the bikes to create a unique piece of art, as a free expression of kids’ creativity.

Artworks will be available to purchase at auction with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the MCH Foundation (Miami Children’s Health Foundation).

The three winning artworks will be on display in the “History of Italian Cycling” exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum, from Oct. 28th to Nov. 7th, and all the fifteen artworks will be at the EXPO of the 2014 GRAN FONDO ITALIA in the weekend of Nov. 8th & 9th in Coconut Grove, at 2500, Pan American Drive.

Now in its 25th year, Florida Foster Care Review will host its 9th Annual Claws for Kids Luncheon. Attended by more than 300 guests, this signature event is expected to help raise more than $60,000 in crucial funds to help protect and advocate for children in Miami-Dade County foster care. Biggest Names in Architecture Reveal the Future of Design at The Residences at Park Grove

OMA architect Shohei Shigematsu and landscape architect Enzo Enea lead design talk

Miami (October 15, 2014)–A crowd of 250 top-tier brokers, buyers and tastemakers gathered to experience two of the most prominent global design talents for a look inside the visionary designs of the Residences at Park Grove, where Shohei Shigematsu from OMA and Enzo Enea blend the past and future of Coconut Grove. New renderings of the property were revealed for the first time last week, showing off the properties’ dazzling, uninterrupted views of the marina, landscape and idyllic Biscayne Bay. The towers’ distinct facades optimize these views from every angle, allowing for an abundance of natural light for its residents, coupled with maximum privacy between units. During the design talk, Shigematsu and Enea spoke about how their designs look at urbanistic and historical elements specific to the Grove’s existing climate and culture, such as the artists and musicians that occupy it, the greenery surrounding it, and the culture alive and thriving within it, enhancing the sense of place with the idiom: integrate, not decorate.

The hour-long discussion was moderated by Ted Loos, a design expert and regular contributor of Architectural Digest and hosted by co-developers of the property: David Martin, President of Terra Group and Carlos Rosso, President of Condo Development The Related Group.

As a celebration of the cultural diversity of the city and the musical richness that exists around the world, South Florida Friends of Classical Music presents the 3rd Edition of the Miami Music Festival from Around the World.

The South Florida Friends of Classical Music, announces the third edition of “Miami Music Festival from Around the World” (formerly known as Miami World Music Festival) which will take place from October, 24 to 26, in the Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts of the Florida International University (FIU).

The 2014 Festival, under its new name, will embark on an international sonic adventure. Four shows in which music lovers will come together to enjoy a wide scope of musical expressions ranging from well-known opera arias to the vibrant African rhythms and explosive piano duels.

This year the festival, under the artistic direction of Dr. Adolfo Vidal, has brought together both musicians of great experience and international recognition as new talents.

Opening the Festival, two virtuoso pianists Michael Linville and Adolfo Vidal, joined by percussionists of the New World Symphony, will perform Sonata for two Pianos and Percussion by the great Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and contagious avant-garde tangos by Argentina’s Astor Piazzolla.

On Saturday, after a sold-out at the last festival Venus Rising returns with a new show: “One Pulse, Many Beats” a mixture of dance, rhythms and sounds from Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the Middle East.

On Sunday a double round of concerts begins with a spectacular journey through the world of opera. “Women in Opera” features five sopranos and mezzo-sopranos singing ravishing duos, trios, recognized arias.

The festival closes with the “Monster Piano Explosion,” a marathon of solos, four-hand throw-downs, two pianos duels and other surprises that will blow your senses, with 20 accomplished pianists from the South of Florida.

All proceeds from the Miami World Music Festival will be benefit educational programs for young by South Florida Friends of Classical Music. The Festival is funded in part with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Miami – Dade and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor of Miami – Dade County and the County Board of Commissioners. Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Other grants by South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. The Fifth Annual Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival offers activities for the entire family, including a performance Main Stage with acts from diverse countries, an Art Boulevard, a Children’s Play Pavilion with bounce houses and facepainters, Consulates representing various countries, culinary artists and food vendors. An event highlight will include the special Bacardi Lounge, along with a wine and a cigar lounge. The Miami Marlins and the Miami Dolphins will also have a special area with activities.

The event is produced and hosted by the Coral Gables Hispanic Cultural Foundation, Inc. This year, the festival is paying a special tribute to artist Emilio Sauma Jr. His painting “La Caribeña” is showcased as this year’s Official Festival Poster. In addition to performances throughout both days, the featured performer will be Latin Billboard & Latin Grammy nominee Aymee Nuvia, “La Sonera del Mundo”.
