“Julio Montalvo is one of the leading trombonists from the island of Cuba. Songwriter, producer, arranger and session musician, he also appears as a solo artist, directing his own project since 1998, in which he blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with elements of modern Jazz to achieve an ingenious style” – New Latin Jazz.

Julio has participated in numerous jazz festivals, with his own projects and as a sideman, in the San Javier Jazz Festival, Jazz Plaza La Habana, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac (France), Granada Jazz Festival, Valencia Jazz Festival, Lugo Jazz Festival and Universijazz, Ciudad Real, amongst others. He has collaborated with the leading stars of Pop and Rock in Spain. He won a Grammy Award for co-producing the Acoustic David Bisbal “A Night at the Theatre Royal” where he participated as co-arranger and multi-instrumentalist. He has shared the stage with musicians from the international jazz circuit such as: Pat Metheny/Perico Sambeat Sedajazz Big Band, Team Cuba, Ximo Tébar, Darryl Hall, Claudio Roditi, Donald Edwards, Miguel “Angá” Diaz, Mark Nightingale, Mike Mossman, Gladstone Galliza, Ramon Cardo Big Band, Edmundo Carneiro, and more. In 2008, he founded his own record label, Montalvo Records, with more than 10 recordings already produced. In July 2013 he created the Julio Montalvo Big Band, a 20- musician orchestra that gives us an intimate yet entertaining show, backed by musicians of the highest standard.

THEATRE SUMMER INTENSIVE SESSIONS

As Miami continues to shine in the international spotlight with popular films such as Oscar-winning Best Picture “Moonlight” and the new season of “Bloodline” which was partially shot here, there has never been a better time explore the world of acting in Miami.

Teatro Prometeo at the Koubek Center at Miami Dade College has a dynamic Spanish-language program of weekly vocational intensive sessions lined up this summer to hone creativity and sharpen artistic skills for those seeking professional training and experience in the acting industry. Each class is spaced out on a different day and time of the week to ease scheduling conflicts for those wishing to attend more than one class. Boasting industry professionals who bring to the classroom their vast knowledge and connections, Prometeo actors are shining on stage and in front of the camera, and this year have been cast in over 11 commercials, three television series, two featured films and in the Rep production of Doña Rosita, la soltera this July.

Singing
This intensive opportunity specializes in vocal technique methods, giving emphasis to breathing techniques, vocal projection and effective interpretation. Taught by Emmy Award-winning actress, singer, author and theater and TV director Cristina Rebull, this course is ideal for those seeking to learn basic singing technique and develop a singing voice.

Mondays 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Classes begin June 5th and end on August 7th, 2017
Cost is $360.

Preparing The Actor
This introductory intensive opportunity offers actors training in character development, delivering monologues and reveals the purpose of achieving a transformation through artistic expression. Instructor Cristina Rebull will introduce students to acting techniques through improvisation and scenes prepared in a theater room setting.

Mondays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Classes begin June 5th until August 7th, 2017
Cost is $360.

Voice and Diction
Clear diction is essential in all acting or voiceover work. This class focuses on improving the quality of being in front of an audience and speaking with security and good diction. Students will learn training techniques to improve diction through breathing exercises, articulation exercises and focusing on the neutral accent and proper projection to achieve a clear and precise communication. The class will be taught by actress and and voiceover coach Vivian Ruiz, who has lent her voice to everything from “South Park” and “Nurse Jackie” to brands such as Olive Garden for voiceover work.

Tuesdays from 7p.m. to 10p.m.
Classes begin on June 6th and finish on August 15, 2017.

Directing
The goal of this intensive opportunity is to offer tools to address the process of theater direction where not only the actor’s job is involved as a fundamental element of the scenic performance, but also the discipline, duties and responsibilities of the director as well techniques that make the staging of a show possible. Dictated by Gonzalo Rodriguez, who has more than 40 years of experience as a theater director, this class offers students the tools to create an amazing production.

Classes begin on May 11th and finish on July 27th, 2017

Acting For The Camera
Life in 2017 is essentially lived through a camera lens. Using diverse television platforms such as commercials, soap operas, TV anchor segments and improvised sketch, this introductory class offers techniques and practices that prepare the actor to work in front of a camera. Acting for the Camera is taught by actress and TV and film coach Vivian Ruiz, who appears in the TV show “Bloodline,” Telemundo’s “La Casa de al Lado,” and films “Pain & Gain” and “Dolphin Tale.”

The Prometeítos (Ages 6-10).

Children ages 6 to 10 are invited to enjoy the world of dancing, acting and singing by getting closer to a dynamic and disciplined activity and developing their expression capabilities with the purpose of helping them to improve in coordination, musicality and creativity. Instructed by theater professional and actress Simoné Balmaseda, and four time Latin Grammy nominee and music professor, Rita Rosa Ruesga, the Prometeitos have participated in the International Festival of Hispanic Theater (Festival Internacional de Teatro Hispano), as well as events at the Miami Book Fair.

What is it? A morning dance party to benefit The Gratitude Project in South Africa and YogaKidz Foundation. It’s called “Dance Now, Think Later”. We’re holding this enticing event to bring together friends and families to bring nourishment for the body mind and soul.

Why hold a morning dance party? We believe that if you move your morning you can move your day. The founder of DNTL, Liza Pitsirilos, faced some personal health challenges that made mornings difficult for her. She soon realized that by rolling out of bed and getting moving before you think too much about it can literally change your entire day. She’s held several virtual dance challenges where participants worldwide have tuned in with their morning ritual of using music to move their morning and move their bodies. Fascinating stories of improved outlook, bursts of energy and better health have resulted. Her and the DNTL team moved it from a “virtual” challenge to a LIVE event where lots of people join in community, connection and shared intention to use dance as a great way to start the day.

Join us this Sunday, June 4 for the next Fresh Meat Class: Roller Derby 101.

This 6 week course is intended to teach the skills required to be a successful derby skater.

Dates: Orientation will be on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 6-9 p.m.

Enrollment Cost and Practice Dates/Times: Enrollment in the Fresh Meat Class: RD101 costs $75 for the 6-week course. Each registered skater will be able to attend practices twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday from 6:30-9 pm) during RD101.

You will receive a packet containing:

1. Explanation of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) basic skills
2. Off-skates workout plan
3. Information on buying derby gear and skates
4. WFTDA rule book
5. What is expected as a member of MVCR
6. MVCR merchandise item

Requirements:

1. 18 or older
2. Gear: quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard & helmet (MVCR has some skates, pads and helmets available to borrow on a first come, first serve basis).
3. Willingness to learn
4. Personal medical insurance strongly recommended

Friends of The Underline and Baptist Health South Florida are warming up for summer with a new location and time for free Saturday Yoga sessions. The yoga classes will now take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Brickell City Centre, 701 S. Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33131, Level One North Block (enter near the Coach store). After the class, students are welcome to stick around for an AcroYoga demonstration that includes a body-bending and mind-blowing combination of acrobatics and yoga led by class instructor, Anny Noratto.
The next class is scheduled for Saturday, June 3rd, followed by Saturday, June 10th and then every other Saturday until the end of the year. Participants can sign up now on Eventbrite.

Missing Children is an epidemic that plagues our global community every single day. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that roughly 800,000 children are reported as missing in the United States each year. Of those children that are reported missing, about 20 percent are not found alive. We cannot sit idly by and let our children continue to be taken from their families and stripped of their freedom.
Florida National University, its Powerhouse Steering Committee and the Dr. Jose Regueiro Foundation have collaborated to present the Third Annual Missing Children’s Awareness and Prevention Rally. Jean Almatas (“Pokito”) is a talented singer/ songwriter, bringing to us deeply rooted music, who expands what we know as world music. Thought leaders from around the globe will converge on Miami for the 4th Global LGBTQI Human Rights Conference from May 26 – 28 at the Loews Miami Beach, as part of World OutGames Miami 2017, the world’s largest 10-day Sports, Culture and Human Rights event. This well-orchestrated conference will offer a world view of human rights with representation from Brazil, Cuba, Canada, Miccosukee Reservation, St. Lucia, Thailand, Tonga, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, Venezuela and others.

The conference will be a powerful gathering of internationally respected human rights activists, researchers, legal scholars and trade organizations. Fabrice Houdart, human rights officer at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York City, will be the keynote speaker for the Opening Reception. Houdart works on the UN Free & Equal campaign, an unprecedented United Nations global public education campaign for LGBTQI equality. He also leads a project on the United Nations corporate standards of conduct for tackling discrimination against LGBTQI people to be launched this fall.

In celebration of Haitian Heritage Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents The Haiti Jazz Roots Project as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. The Haiti Jazz Roots Project is an electric blend of outstanding musicians performing jazz-infused folkloric Haitian music. Led by guitarist Jean Chardavoine, the group comprises of Jennifer Louis (vocals), Mike Levine (piano/keys), Kenneth Jiménez (bass), Matisou Légba (Haitian drams) and Shay Eisten (drums).

Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, Jean Chardavoine is a concrete manifestation of the new emerging genre “Haitian Jazz.” Jennifer Louis is a Miami based vocalist whose performance experience can best be described as nothing short of electric. Mike Levine is a man of many talents whose career is a blend of different aspects of music and Kenneth Jimenez is a young talent emerging in the South Florida Jazz scene. Matisou Légba, a well-known Haitian drummer, has been studying and playing the traditional Vodou rites and tempos for over 25 years. This talented mix of musicians creates a unique music experience unlike any other.

Kick off the holiday weekend by enjoying the jazz-infused Haitian music of The Haiti Jazz Roots Project. The museum galleries will be open by donation from 7–10 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 23rd, at 6PM the Miami Design District invites the community to join in on the conversation during this month’s session of Creative Minds Talks featuring Daniel Libeskind, Founder and Principal Architect at Studio Libeskind, and Jon Stuart, Dean for Cultural and Community Engagement, FIU College of Architecture + The Arts. Creative Minds Talks is a series of talks, hosted by Miami Design District featuring high profile guests from the industries of fashion, design, architecture and art. The talks aim to pair two notable names from similar fields for a dialogue that serves to educate, inspire, entertain and promote creative fields of the cultural world.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Daniel Libeskind is the founder and principal architect at Studio Libeskind. As Principal Design Architect for Studio Libeskind, Mr. Libeskind speaks widely on the art of architecture in universities and professional summits. Libeskind was also selected as master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. His architecture and ideas have been the subject of many articles and exhibitions, influencing the field of architecture and the development of cities and culture. In 2003, Studio Libeskind won an historic competition—to create a master plan for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. In addition to a towering spire of 1,776 feet, the Libeskind design study proposed a complex program encompassing a memorial, underground museum, the integration of the slurry wall, special transit hub and four office towers. This plan is being realized today.

John Stuart is the Dean for Cultural and Community Engagement, Executive Director of Miami Beach Urban Studios, and Professor at Florida International University. He is also an architectural historian and a visual artist developing collaborative research projects on complexity, community, identity, technology, the environment and public space with funding from Van Alen Institute, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

On Wednesday evening, the 24th of May, a public talk will be held at Florida International University’s Graham Center. The theme of the night will be Yoga, Health and Well-Being – A Dialog for Uniting Body, Mind and Spirit. This special program is in honor of the 125th Birthday of Paramahamsa Yogananda. The public event is being organized by the Kriya Yoga Institute and FIU’s Program in the Study of Spirituality & Department of Religious Studies.

Registration (for those who have not pre-registered) will begin at 6:00 pm, at this time also light refreshments will be served. The presentations will begin promptly at 6:30 pm and the program will conclude at 9:30 pm after a Question and Answer session. This night will feature several speakers including:

Sri N.V. Raghuram – Chairman and Spiritual Founder of Yoga Bharati and Professor of yoga philosophy in Swami Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation (SVYASA).

Roy Eugene Davis – a direct disciple of Paramahamsa Yogananda, Founder and Director of Center for Spiritual Awareness in Georgia, author of many books and publisher of the Truth Journal magazine.

Dr. Akhilesh Sharma – Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine, who operates a clinic in New Delhi and is widely recognized for his outstanding contributions in the field of Ayurvedic medicine.

In addition, there will also be a musical tribute to Paramahamsa Yogananda by Songstress, Marisa of Germany who recorded an album of songs by Yoganandaji, entitled O Life is Sweet.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, concludes its star-studded 25th Anniversary celebration season by presenting world-renowned bassist Christian McBride with his cryptically named trio Tip City. The performance will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Bassist Christian McBride is one of those bigger-than-life artists who just burst onto the music scene seemingly in full bloom. His father and great uncle, both well-known Philadelphia bassists, mentored him early. Half of a lifetime ago, by his 21st birthday, he was a remarkably mature player and rapidly becoming everyone’s favorite young acoustic bassist of the 1990s. Christian’s huge sound and prodigious technique, both with plucked and bowed solos, recall the legendary Ray Brown and particularly Paul Chambers. He actually started on electric bass when he was eight and took R&B gigs in high school, but by then he was getting more interested in jazz and playing the acoustic bass. Five Grammys later, he now plays both in a variety of settings.

About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned.
Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores.

These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists. The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community.

Girls’ Club presents Offsite Performance: Nearing, an elaborate, multi-media performance from the Fort Lauderdale-based artist Jen Clay on Saturday, June 3, 2017, 6-9pm, at ArtServe, 1350 E Sunrise Blvd, in Fort Lauderdale.

First seating begins promptly at 6:30, the second at 7:30pm, with an interactive prologue and intermission.

Nearing is an immersive experience bringing together large scale puppets, performative sculpture, ambiguous creature-like costumes, stop motion animation and an extra-terrestrial soundscape created by Clay’s collaborator Elise Anderson.

Audiences of all ages are invited to witness the origins of seemingly friendly non-human beings with unknown intentions and a very visceral obsession with the audience, in this interactive performance.

Like much of Clay’s work, Nearing is inspired by the culture of mysterious creature sightings reported in rural communities, like that of West Virginia’s Moth Man and North Carolina’s Brown Mountain Lights. These mysterious phenomena have fed a subculture of paranormal believers, conspiracy theorists and generations of suspicious, imaginative people who doubt we are alone in our universe.

Although the event is appropriate for all ages and takes significant influence from children’s edu-tainment tropes like Sesame Street and Teletubbies, adult themes persist. Nearing references supernatural and fantastical occurrences, re-creating very human experiences of social anxiety, fear and existential doubt.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP/registration required.

VIP tickets are available and include a copy of Jen Clay’s recently created artist book, published by Is Projects, which acts as a prologue to this performance and includes interactive elements, pop-open doors and pull-out tabs.

Chardavoine is a concrete manifestation of Haitian jazz, a new genre emerging in jazz today. Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, the talented guitarist has covered the gambit of musical styles through the waves of his guitar. He is an incredible musician, a creative artist and a refined professional. He represents the best of modern music and the future of jazz, along with his Creole Jazz Ensemble.

Chardavoine is well-known around New York for his association with the late great Dave Valentin, who’s a guest on two of his albums. Last year he had the privilege of playing at Aretha Franklin’s birthday bash with the Tito Puente Jr. orchestra.

His latest release,“The Tribute”, which commemorates the Haitian earthquake victims, showcases his talents – not only as an excellent musician but also as a great creative and seasoned arranger. His previous CD, “Fifth Season”, has been described as funky jazz, played with soul. It’s guitar oriented in the style of George Benson, and lyrical in the style of Stevie Wonder.”

The ensemble features Hilario Bell on drums, Tom McCormick on sax, Rafael Valencia on bass, and Felix Gomez on piano and keys.

Moved by a heartwarming story about a young cancer patient and her family’s gratitude and devotion to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Douglas Elliman agent Robin Kluge has organized a unique fundraising event as a way to give back.

The “Have a Heart Auction,” benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be held May 18th, from 6:30-9 p.m. at Casa Mia, a private home located on Sunset Island 4 at 1525 West 21st Street in Miami Beach. Taking her music across the nation in 2015 on The Maestro East Coast Tour, LaVie toured 10 major cities including New York City, Boston, D.C., Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. Opening for KyMani Marley, LaVie performed for thousands of enthusiastic fans.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is hosting its 2017 Creative Arts Summer Camp comprising of five 2-week sessions for kids ages 6 through 12. They are taught by art professionals and all projects will be inspired by great works of art, dating from antiquity to the present day.

From June 12 – June 23, the theme will be Fairies and Trolls. Students will learn painting and print-making techniques as they study the work of nineteenth and twentieth century fairy tale illustrators. Fairy tales from Europe, Africa, Russia and Spain will be explored.

Dive into the Summer season with a curated film cycle featuring new cinematic classics at Faena Hotel Miami Beach’s Screening Room. Under the direction of Jaie Laplante, Director of Programming at Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival, this four-film cycle—aptly named “Vacations”—presents a series of storylines centered on the concept of summer vacations, escapes, road trips and the like in which characters seek to break away from their everyday existence only to find they’ve brought their inescapable selves along for the ride.

Week #1 – Pauline at the Beach (France, 1983, Éric Rohmer), 94 minutes.
The third – and sexy best – of Rohmer’s comédies et proverbs series features two cousins, the older Marion and the younger Pauline, taking a summer vacation on the northwest coast of France. Marion has firm ideas about love, whereas the impressionable Pauline is still defining her approach to men. Rohmer wisely and wittingly skewers our human capacity for self-delusion when it comes to sorting out matters of the heart.

Week #2 – Stranger Than Paradise (USA, 1984, Jim Jarmusch), 99 minutes.
The first film from the legendary of icon of American independent cinema still surprises today with its unconventional editing rhythms and often-imitated but never surpassed deadpan comedy. Willie, a New York slacker gets an unexpected visit from his Hungarian cousin Eva, on her way to Cleveland to visit Aunt Lotte. Later, Willie and his friend Eddie take a road trip to pick up Eva and take her on vacation to Florida. Jarmusch’s professional debut won the prestigious Camera d’Or at Cannes for best first film.

Week #3 – Y tu mamá también (Mexico, 2001, Alfonso Cuarón), 106 minutes.
The film that won Cuarón his first Oscar nomination also catapulted Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna into international stardom. Two teenage friends from different sides of the class divide, Tenoch and Julio, brag about the most beautiful secluded beach in Mexico’s to Tenoch’s cousin-in-law Luisa, who has just moved to Mexico from Spain, and offer to take her there on a road trip. But this is no ordinary vacation – for the boys, it is a journey into adulthood, and complexity. Also starring Maribel Verdú.

Week #4 – Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Spain/USA, 2008, Woody Allen), 96 minutes.
Woody Allen’s art soared in new directions once he ventured out of his New York City-only settings, like this droll visit to Spain. American tourists Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) take a vacation to Barcelona, where they meet the famous seducer and artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), and his tempestuous former wife Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz, in the famous performance that won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress).

The Miami FC returns home on Saturday, May 13 when the Club hosts Indy Eleven on Brazilian Heritage Night.

Miami and Indy were evenly matched last season, with each club picking up a win, a loss and a draw. Two of the matchups were played at Riccardo Silva Stadium, with the Orange and Blue getting points in both matches. May 13 will be a battle, but with the Miami Faithful cheering on the squad, a win is almost guaranteed the club can expect a tremendous home field advantage!

Celebrate Brazilian Heritage Night and #JogaBonito with your Miami FC! Enjoy a pre-match performance on the North Concourse from Gil Santos Brazilian Carnival Inc, along with Brazilian food, mini flags and more!

LaunchCode is a local tech nonprofit that provides accessible coding education and training. We place aspiring computer developers into paid tech apprenticeships and jobs. Check out our latest FREE class, Immersive CodeCamp, a full-time 20-week South Florida class that takes a deep dive into the world of coding over three months.

You will learn universal programming concepts and best practices with Python; foundational elements and tools for full-stack web development; deep dive into Java development and build your portfolio project. You will also receive feedback and support after class to prep for our apprenticeship program.

About Sogno:
Rampin is a street sweeper at the “Circus of Dreams,” the legendary circus for clowns. His dream is to become a world-renowned clown, but his shyness and clumsiness keeps him from reaching his ultimate goal over and over again. Throughout his journey, Rampin has never been in front of a show audience. Sad and distraught he decides to retire —- shortly after working different odds jobs he falls into a deep sleep state that takes him onto a fabulous adventure (SOGNO) where he meets other aspiring circus dreamers. Rampin and his new friends take the audience on an immersive journey to turn their clown dreams into a reality and overcome a variety of obstacles during the magical voyage.

“Sogno” is a story that uplifts and inspires you, if you do not try, you will never know if you can. The motto of Sogno is “never give up,” even though it seems the universe is against you. Life lessons by “Rampin” to follow your instincts and use your talents to make your dreams a reality.
Dreams of Circus invites young children and adult spectators to jump into the magical world of circus during an immersive journey with “Sogno” exploring an alternative world of comedic/acrobatic situations and discovering how self-confidence can help you reach your goals.

SOGNO pushes the imagination of childhood fantasy dreams of the circus. International acrobats are part of the world of SOGNO, who are determined to wake up the imagination of the youngest child to the adult who never gives up on dreaming.

This circus performance is suited for the whole family to enjoy (2 years old and older). It will be premiere in Miami from May 12th to May 21st at the Paseo de las Artes in Doral – 3635 NW 78th Ave Doral, Fl 33122.

“Sogno… Dreams of Circus” was created by Francisco Santos, a Spaniard veteran creator of successful shows for children and adults. He is a also a former performer at Cirque du Soleil and many other world-renowned circuses throughout his storied career.

The Peace Ambassador Leadership Summit is a week-long summer program where a diverse group of high school students are invited to exercise their leadership abilities, while forming meaningful friendships. PALS is a safe and judgement-free environment where students share their personal experiences and find commonalities with their peers.

Since it’s inception in 2014, PALS has created a network of hundreds of students from across the country that have become peer mentors, college roommates, confidants, and have made a lifelong pledge to be upstanders rather than bystanders. Workshops at PALS include, but are not limited to, topics on suicide prevention, cyber, girl-to-girl, and racial & ethnic bullying.

Experiencing life on a college campus, gives students insight into college life, while the PALS curriculum simultaneously prepares them in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal skills, how to search for grants and scholarships, and the importance of building a community.
