Jungle Island debuts its thrilling “Hallow Fest,” a themed weekend-long adventure that is open to guests of all ages at the newly designed eco-adventure park. Filled with interactive games, haunted trails, pumpkin painting, face painting, costume contests, animal interactions and much more! It’s Miami’s best location to take a festive journey through a decorative jungle and celebrate the season with the children.
Every weekend, beginning on October 13th through October 28th, Jungle Island will bring a new adventure of engaging events and activities, scenic photo opportunities at a real pumpkin patch, a winding hay barrel maze, scarecrows, and a trick-or-treating candy trail all throughout the park. With every child admission, children will receive a free small pumpkin to decorate at the park’s pumpkin painting station, with medium and large pumpkins available for additional purchase.
Each costume contest will be held from October 26 – October 28, with a variety of exciting prizes including VIP Adventure Tours, Annual Passes, and General Admission Tickets.
Children aren’t the only one’s getting all the fun, as parents and friends will also be able to enjoy all the festivities with special Halloween-themed carnival food, potion drinks, smoking cocktails, pumpkin spice lattes, and a festive beer garden for grown-ups.
General admission: $52.95, $39.95 (3-10 years). Children two and under are free.
In celebration of National Adventure Day, guests can also take advantage of their entry to the park with Jungle Island’s “Buy A Day, Play For A Year” special through October 21st, turning a one-day admission into an annual pass. With this ticket to adventure, Jungle Island is providing guests with ultimate year-round access to all of its brand new amenities as they roll out.

Ha*Ash, is a Mexican-American pop and country duo comprised of sisters Hanna Nicole Pérez Mosa and Ashley Grace Pérez Mosa, formed in 2002 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, U.S.

From a young age Hanna and Ashley Pérez Mosa developed an affection towards music, playing their debut show at a talent contest organised by their school in 1998. The performance proved a catalyst for the sisters’ success, who were subsequently invited to play the local Railroad Festival and Louisiana Music Cavalcade. By 2001 the sisters had signed with Sony Music and formed the group Ha*Ash, with the aim of combining Latin pop, country and rock.

Featuring Aureo Baqueiro on the production reigns, Ha*Ash’s self-titled, debut album appeared in 2003. Selling over 140,000 copies, the album found great success aided by the singles “Odio Amarte”, “Estes en donde Estes”, and “Te Quedaste”. The record propelled the sisters to U.S. and Latin American recognition and was later featured on the animated film “Magos y Gigantes”. Once again with Baqueiro on production duties, the duo’s sophomore studio album “Mundos Opuestos” followed in April 2006, rising to No. 4 on the Mexican Albums Chart. Spawning the singles “Amor A Medias”, “Me Entrego a Ti”, and “Tu Miranda En Mí”, it was their third Mexican single, “¿Qué Hago Yo?”, which became a No. 1, beating out Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”.

Drawing influences from a spectrum of sources including Reba McEntire, Soraya, and Sin Bandera, the sisters’ third album saw the arrival of producer Michele Canova. Released in August 2008, “Habitación Doble” (Double Room), generated significant radio play in Mexico notably with the singles “No T Quiero Nada” and “Already Home”. In 2011 a fourth studio album was issued by Ha*Ash entitled “A Tiempo”, following which the pair embarked on a successful Latin American tour. Three years later, Ha*Ash returned to the studio to release “Primera Fila” in 2014 and now in 2018 they are in tour in USA with 100 Años Contigo, with concert in Miami on October 21 at the Fillmore Miami Beach

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa presents the World Premiere of El Conde Dracula. Created and choreographed by Artistic Director of BFLR, Ilisa Rosal, this work was inspired by Bram Stokers’ Dracula. This potent and vivid Flamenco Ballet connects with this timeless material to create a new incarnation of what is probably the most definitive work in this genre.
In the play, a young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the midst of Eastern Europe. Harker is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker’s betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina’s closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Abraham Van Helsing, the archenemy of Count Dracula, adds a special twist to the story, as Lucy’s friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away.

This production features 12 dancers and musicians, including six top artists directly from Spain led by Special Guest Artist Pepe Flores, one of the most important artists of his time, in the role of Count Dracula. He will be joined by dancers Agustin Barajas, Juan Mateo and Fran Bas along with singer Luis Moreno and guitarist Miguel Aguilera, who will create and perform original vocals and lyrics for the work.

The story and characters help audiences relate to what is being expressed by the music and dance, which becomes a universal language. It creates an exciting and inspiring theater experience.

Rockford Projects seeks innovative artworks for the inaugural artCURATED sector of ArtFTL 2019.
ArtFTL returns for the 3rd year as the premier art fair in Fort Lauderdale, drawing collectors during the height of the season in South Florida. Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Venice of America” due to its expansive and intricate canal system, and this 4-day curated art fair showcases the art within luxury waterfront properties. Attendees are transported via complimentary water taxi on an artistic journey along the famed Intracoastal waterways, in the heart of the arts and entertainment district.
The ArtCURATED sector will encompass an entire property of 5,000 to 10,000 square feet, and feature 40+ artists, within six distinct, thematic exhibitions, under the direction of Lisa Rockford.

Seeking art that corresponds to the following Exhibition Themes:
• ECSTASY: A Celebration of Color. Seeking Monochromatic artworks (made of a single/dominant, vivid color), or works that offer all colors in the rainbow, within one work.
• AURA: A celebration of Light. Seeking artworks that reference intense light, auras, or are made with neon, LEDs, florescent, incandescent lights, digital, or electric light components.
• NARCISSUS: Seeking art with mirrors, mirrored surfaces, and/or chrome, or polished stainless steel.
• ELEMENTAL: Earth and Water. Seeking artworks that emphasize earth or water, and/or the human connection to either. Artworks that reference ecological concerns, like sea level rise, and pollution, are of curatorial emphasis.

Art requirements:
• Artists may submit up to 5 artworks, but will be limited to 3 artworks in the exhibit. (Artworks with multiple pieces may be considered one work).
• All submissions must be original work, created by the applicant, and without violation of copyrighted imagery. One of a kind works are encouraged, or very limited editions. (ie. Mass produced prints are not acceptable).
• Submitted images should accurately represent the actual, finished artwork, (not a modified or digital sketch). Any works that do not match the appearance of the submitted images may be disqualified at the discretion of the curator.
• Artworks cannot be larger than 6 feet in any direction.
• All artworks must be available for sale.
• Artwork will be installed by a professional installer, but works that are made up of more than 10 parts, or that cannot be installed without the assistance of the artist are discouraged.

Terms:
• A jury fee of $25 is required with the application.
• Artists will be notified at the earliest possible date, or not later than December 21, 2018.
• If artwork is accepted, each artist will be required to pay $100 for participation. (We have made every effort to keep costs to artists low, as they are a fraction of the 100k production costs for the fair).
• Participating artists will be provided 4 complimentary passes to the fair, and VIP Vernissage invitation for the artist. Artists are not required to be present at the fair, but are encouraged to attend.
• Artists must deliver accepted artworks at their own cost, either by hand-delivering, or by shipping to the art handler, with a return shipping label.
• Sales: Prices should include a 40% commission for ArtFTL, and 60% of the sale price will be sent to the artist. (The price = The amount you want to receive x 1.4)

“She plays the hell out of the guitar” – Matt “Guitar” Murphy

Rachelle earned a bachelors degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Miami. With all of these influences, Rachelle developed her own unique finger-style approach to blues rhythm and lead guitar playing. After college, Rachelle became known in Miami for her unique style and was cast in an indie movie, taught guitar for National Guitar Workshop, and worked on developing guitar methodology.

Her style eventually brought her to the attention of other blues artists. She worked with and toured as a guitarist with artists like Super Chikan, Albert Castiglia, Grady Champion and Ray Drew. After honing her skills as a side-woman, Rachelle stepped out on her own to front her own band. Since then, Rachelle has played around the world and she continues to grace the stage as one of the blues’ most original performers.

In its eighth year, this 5K run-walk has become a Broward County tradition and attracts thousands of participants. The course runs along scenic A1A, and participants may run, walk or jog. The Design District juxtaposes design brands with internationally important art collections, phenomenal temporary and permanent art and design installations, and great restaurants. Spanierman Modern presents Capricious Calculations, an exhibition by Brooklyn painter and educator Lisa Corinne Davis. In this body of work, the artist transforms the familiar, and subverts meanings and connotations through experimentation with objective and subjective formal languages. The show is also the debut exhibition at Spanierman Modern’s new Midtown Miami space. Capricious Calculations will run from October 19 through November 13, 2018 at Spanierman Modern (located at 151 NE 41 Street in Midtown, suite p133). An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 19, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Through the works in Capricious Calculations, Davis continues her exploration into the use of color, geometry, and subjective and objective forms to suggest the complex relationship between race, culture, and history. Davis’ manner of painting is located between abstraction and figuration – a semiotic position devised to encourage a viewer to relocate and reconsider their own proximity to form and the personal experiences and ideas that affect their ability to read an image. At the heart of Davis’ practice is the notion that the viewer must decide whether the information in each painting should be received as presented or dynamically interpreted according to their individual lens. If the latter choice is made the viewer must also contend with the fact that all memory and relational understandings brought to the work are subjective, and thus, renders any readings hinging upon them as fluid and without static definitions with the passage of time.

Lisa Corinne Davis’ oeuvre shuttles between allowing the paint to fulfill its mark-making function on the canvas, while referencing the physical world and cheeky nods to modern ubiquity and dependence on technology. The paintings are a playful investigation that culls different formal languages into one two-dimensional plane where both the paints and the compositions themselves misbehave, stretch, and transform to create a new kind of unified field. For the artist, both visual and written languages serve as malleable mediums for experimentation. With titles like Analytical Anarchism, Quixotic Quantum, etc. the artist draws together disparate ideological references to further engage viewers whilst simultaneously allowing the paint to speak for itself.

She is the recipient of the 2018 People of Distinction Humanitarian Award by Al Cole from CBS Radio, and the Meljourne Woman Award. She has been nominated for a Department of Justice Victim Advocate Award. In addition, she is on the host committee and has raised funds for the Innocence Project of Florida.

Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College presents SUPERFLEX: We Are All in the Same Boat, the first large-scale exhibition of the critically acclaimed Danish collective SUPERFLEX in the United States. The exhibition will focus on the group’s humorous and playfully subversive installations and films that deal with the economy, financial crisis, corruption, migration, and the possible consequences of global warming.

The exhibition will include a group of video, sculpture, and installation works selected for their relevance to the history, present, and future of the City of Miami. The works will reflect upon the situation of Miami from the perspectives of art, finance, climate, and a fictional, if plausible, future. The topics of water, migration, refugees, and the economy inevitably drive the conception.

During the month of October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month), The Balcony is hosting several initiatives to support breast cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center of University of Miami Health System.

Every Sunday in October, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., The Balcony will be hosting Revitalize Sunday Rooftop Brunch Party: Save the Boobies. On behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, $1 from every drink purchased during this event will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center of University of Miami Health System. There is no fee to attend. Guests will enjoy a wide-selection of brunch menu items along with music, performers and entertainers. RSVP to reserve your table by calling The Balcony at (754) 200-6344.

The Balcony will also be hosting additional month long Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives including Bras Across The Balcony. Guests will be given the opportunity to hang a bra across the balcony for a $20 donation or, BYOB (Bring Your Own Bra) to hang for a $10 donation. Pink feather boas will also be available all month long for a $5 donation and $1 from every Clover Club cocktail purchased during October will be donated. Lastly, breast cancer fighters and survivors will receive a complimentary glass of Rosé all month long.

Macchialina, Miami Beach’s stellar Italian restaurant, will host an exclusive wine dinner with the acclaimed Italian winery Frattoria dei Barbi on Monday, October 8, 2019.

Beyond its food, artfully created and executed by chef/owner Michael Pirolo, Macchialina is known as a must-try destination for wine lovers; especially those seeking unique, obscure and amazing Italian wines.

Overseen by director of operations and co-owner Jacqueline Pirolo, Macchialina’s wine list is a treasure trove for oenphiles and those with a case of Italophilia. So it’s little surprise that Macchialina would host a dinner with this revered winery.

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and BroCoMo (Bro-ward Co-unty Mo-dern) will present a Mid-century Modern Architectural Tour highlighting the historic architecture of our city and the unique works of Dan Duckham. Duckham, now in his 80s, was one of a group of trailblazing modernist architects in Florida who rose to prominence in late 1950s and 60s. His designs were inspired by the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright with the fusion of the outdoors and indoors through geometric forms and construction. The tour begins and ends at the New River Inn. Parking is available at the County Garage with entrance on 2nd Street. Lunch is included. Tour leaders are from BroCoMo.

Benefiting the Broward Health Foundation’s Lillian S. Wells Women’s Health Center

In support of the Glam-A-THON™ – a local nonprofit that assists underfunded women undergoing breast cancer treatment – famed Iron Chef and Food Network Chopped judge, Geoffrey Zakarian, invites guests to celebrate stone crab season with the second annual “Stone Crabs for a Cause” on October 19th at Point Royal.

Zakarian, whose culinary career spans more than 30 years as an acclaimed chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and TV personality, will serve as host for the evening, curating a four-course dinner that highlights one of Florida’s most beloved seasonal seafoods – stone crabs. The menu will be paired with premium wines from Bodvár House of Rosé.

PAMM will kick off the fifth year of the Scholl Lecture Series with distinguished artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa. Jafa’s interdisciplinary practice combines film, installation, sculpture, and performance to examine assumptions about race and identity. Throughout his multifaceted career, Jafa has worked with John Akomfrah, Ava DuVernay, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, Spike Lee, and Jay-Z, among many others. His much-celebrated 2016 video Love is the Message, the Message is Death was recently acquired by the PAMM Collectors Council and is on view through April 21, 2019.

Seeking items priced at a minimum of $80 per item, and maximum of $1500 per item. Items may be one of a kind or in multiple, but should have the level of craft and innovation expected for the upscale market.
10 artisans will be selected and featured for each event.

Our newest class, THE ROUNDTABLE, welcomes campers to bring their original song to work on with our incredibly talented and skilled rock star counselors. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach’s hotspots to celebrate the match, Clay, unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws, spends the night at the Hampton House Motel celebrating with three of his friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and football icon Jim Brown. One Night in Miami… is a play that traces Cassius Clay’s journey to becoming the legendary Muhammad Ali, squarely centering Miami’s critical role as pivotal to the American Civil Rights Movement.

MIAMI, FL (October, 2018) – What happens when you mix the mystical philosophy and music of India with the forward-leaning jazz of the legendary Alice Coltrane? That intoxicating, otherworldly yet deeply earthy music was nearly lost to history until David Byrne (of Talking Heads and more fame) and his Luaka Bop record label recently brought it back to the public with the release of a new album compilation. On Friday, October 12, South Florida audiences have the chance to hear that music live, from the Sai Anatam Singers, who originally performed Coltrane’s devotional compositions, including Alice’s musician daughter Michelle Coltrane, at the North Beach Bandshell, presented by The Rhythm Foundation.

Alice Coltrane was an acclaimed jazz musician, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, John died, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate Alice turned to Indian spirituality, eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram. Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice and during this time she released recordings inspired by jazz and the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed with the Indian music of her religious practice.

This unique concert event, led by Surya Botofasina, an actor and musician who grew up in Coltrane’s ashram, continues The Rhythm Foundation’s eclectic 2018 fall season. “We are all so excited to not only pay tribute to the iconic Alice Coltrane with this event, but also to bring this powerful spiritual and musically moving concert to our North Beach Bandshell” says Par Neiburger, Artistic Director of The Rhythm Foundation.

It’s no secret that South Floridians love their Cuban coffee, but how good are they at guessing how many beans fill a jar? Colada Cuban Coffee House and Eatery in Flagler Village is celebrating National Coffee Day by giving away a year of free coffee to one lucky coffee lover who can “guesstimate” how many coffee beans are in a glass jar at Colada. Every day leading up to National Coffee Day on Saturday, September 29, Colada guests are invited to cast their predictions, and then at 9 p.m. on National Coffee Day, the person who guessed the closest will be announced and receive an official Colada card for one free coffee a week for an entire year!
In addition to Colada’s Coffee Bean Challenge, now through National Coffee Day, guests who check in at Colada on social media and/or Yelp! will receive a free fresh Cuban pastry with any purchase.

Menu
Colada’s delicious Cuban-American- inspired menu offers guests a varied selection of authentic Cuban food and beverages made fresh daily. The popular breakfast menu features an assortment of coffees, including cortaditos, Cuban coffee, iced coffees and café americanos, along with a tempting list of breakfast sandwich options made with combinations of eggs, meats and cheeses. Lunch favorites consist of some traditional and some not-so-traditional choices, such as a Cuban Philly sandwich made with fresh ropa vieja, sweet and spicy guava chicken wings, empanadas or a make-your-own Colada bowl, which involves choosing a protein, base, toppings and a signature sauce. Fritas, guava pastries, croquettes and delectable desserts, including Cuban flan and tres leches, are also available.
Colada serves red wine sangria and sake-based mojitos that are made in-house, as well as a selection of local craft beers on tap.

Since 1994, FIU’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI) has organized an annual concert series featuring music on Cuban themes by Cuban and other composers. The purpose of this public event is to celebrate, preserve, and promote the rich and diverse musical heritage of Cuba and its diaspora.

CRI will hold the 14th installment of its Classically Cuban concert series on December 2, 2018, at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center of the FIU School of Music on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Virtuoso pianists and Cuban brothers Orlay Alonso and Orlando Alonso present an immersive experience that places the audience at the center of the “Golden Era” of Cuban music and entertainment of the 1940s and 1950s.

From the sensuality and seductive melodies of the bolero, to the exotic and complex rhythms of the mambo and cha cha, Cuba’s musical heritage spans centuries and has influenced most popular music of our time. Presented by the Alonso Brothers, this interactive show features a variety of Cuban styles such as mambo, cha cha, salsa, bolero, son, danzón, and conga, and includes works by Celia Cruz, Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, Miguel Faílde, and Dámaso Pérez Prado, among others.

Equally talented, these brothers dazzle with their artistic exuberance and passionate expression. Having played the piano since they each were six years old, Orlando Alonso and Orlay Alonso both attended the National School of the Arts in Havana and earned degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Yale University, among several other prestigious institutions. As a duo, each brother brings his own signature style to the stage. Inspired by their communicative gifts, elegance, and polish, the Alonso brothers shine with a charismatic stage presence that is a pleasure to behold.

They will be collecting relief supplies to assist individuals and families impacted by the storm from Tuesday, September 18 through September 20, 2018, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Arnold Hall, located at the fairgrounds, 10901 SW 24 St. (Coral Way).

Celebrate the colorful traditions and heritage of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos during “Ofrendas,” a cultural immersion exhibit, opening Sunday, October 7 at Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. The History Museum housed in the New River Inn on the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society campus will be awash in bold hues and imaginative decor as it showcases both fine art and creative community memorial altars or “ofrendas,” covered in photographs, flowers and favorite items of the dearly departed. Associated activities will include family fun on opening day from noon – 4 p.m., a Community Conversation about Day of the Dead with an artifact repatriation ceremony on October 29 at 6 p.m. and a closing evening of parades, costumes and revelry on Friday, November 2 from noon – 8 p.m.

This “Ofrendas” exhibit is part of Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s “Fall in Love” Florida resident discount program. “Fall in Love” will offer residents a chance to experience history in the heart of Downtown Fort Lauderdale, participate in activities and view new exhibits at 50% off general admission each visit through November 30 (some exclusions apply) and receive 25% off of a $100 yearly membership which includes admission to hundreds of museums around the US through the Southeast Museums Reciprocal Program.*

SPF’18 will take over FATVillage Saturday, November 10, 2018, for an epic, print-happy day of exhibitors, with a market of print, book and zine exhibitors from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton, Orlando, Gainesville and beyond, a giant steamroller pressing the largest prints of the fair, live demonstrations of print-making techniques, creation stations and art making activities, a stage of author and poets talks, a cabana with ice cold, locally crafted beer, food trucks and so much more!

SPF’18 will showcase a diverse range of local and regional artists, printers, publishers, authors, poets, bookmakers, designers, zinesters and cultural workers, sharing and exhibiting new work related to printmaking, book making and zine creation.

What is a zine? A zine (/ˈziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is most commonly a small-circulation, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier or similarly inexpensive means. Zines are usually the product of a single person, or of a very small group. The primary intent is to advance the views of the creator rather than profit, since the time and materials necessary to create a zine are seldom matched by revenue from its sale. Zines tend to deal with subjects that are too controversial or niche for mainstream media.

SPF’18 exhibitors will take over The Projects in FATVillage, Fort Lauderdale, a 8,000+ sq ft warehouse space, celebrating the growing interest and support for independent and small press artists and publishers that have fueled the sub-culture in South Florida for years.

Funding for SPF’18 is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council as well as the following Funds from the Community Foundation of Broward: Fonda and H. Wayne Huizenga, Jr Family Trust Fund, Gary J. Scotto Fund and Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund. Additional funding is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The Taste of Lauderdale Lakes: Food, Music, Arts & Culture Festival will be held Saturday, November 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Lauderdale Lakes Waterfront 3900 North SR 7, Lauderdale Lakes, FL 33309. The event celebrates much of what makes the City of Lauderdale Lakes special. The event will include live entertainment, arts & culture village, cook-offs, restaurant showcases, cooking demonstrations, and more!

The City of Lauderdale Lakes serves as executive producers of this, fun public event. Attendees will enjoy a full line up of things to do, including:

• Restaurant Showcase – Local chefs channel their inner Food Network Star as they demonstrate how to prepare a signature dish. Guests will taste the food and interact with the chefs during these interactive sessions.
• Best Home Chef Cook-Off – We have a lot of talented residents in the City of Lauderdale Lakes. Those who are great chefs at home will showcase their cooking skills and battle it out for the “Best Home Chef” title. Participants will create and prepare an original recipe using a basket of ingredients from the Lauderdale Lakes Community Garden and local grocers. Grand prize is $500 and bragging rights!
• Arts & Culture Village – Lauderdale Lakes is a diverse and vibrant community. This is evident in the arts and culture which will be on display during Taste of Lauderdale Lakes. Including a live painting demonstration; a live community participation art project; art exhibits; pop-up cultural performances; and multi-cultural merchandise. Local artists who are participating in the City’s “Arts In the Round” initiative will compete for a $250 grand prize and the “Taste of Lauderdale Lakes 2018 Artist of the Year” title.
• Kids Zone with face painters, balloons, a rock-climbing wall and more
• Music and live performance… an emcee will host a showcase that includes an exciting line-up of multi-genre performances.
