Erick Morillo:
With his A-list celebrity chums, astronomical bank balance and palatial homes in Miami, Ibiza and soon Los Angeles, few people epitomize the ‘superstar DJ’ like Erick Morillo. The organizers of the IMS music conference in Ibiza certainly thought so, inviting Erick to give a talk entitled ‘Big Dog DJs: Fuck You I’m Famous’ earlier this year.
“People definitely know my name, but I’ve worked hard to get here,” Erick says. “It’s not like I think people should bow before me because I’m some big star.”
Although, with his Subliminal Sessions nights at Pacha having enjoyed their 13th year (making Morillo the White Isle’s longest-serving resident DJ in 2010) Ibiza is already conquered. With a resurgent Subliminal Records churning out floor fillers by the month, two new albums – one solo and one with Jose Nunez and Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero as The Dronez – in production and a live show in the works, Morillo is now redoubling his campaign to take America. The next shot in which will be DJing at the opening of the exclusive Marquee club in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, appearing alongside Jay-Z and Coldplay.

Itâ€™s no surprise we love to travel but, during our most recent trip to Colorado, we realized one new reason why: traveling reminds us that Miami life is not normal. In Miami, no one bats an eye if you walk to the pharmacy with your booty hanging out. At the same time, no one questions if you walk out in a ball gown with full hair and make up to do the same. Miami lets you do you, boo boo. Few other places on this planet are magical like thatâ€”and, as we learned last week, Vail most certainly is not one of those places.

Around 2 weeks ago we were doing the zombie-like Instagram scroll when we came across a post by Chaser Brand featuring a David Bowie muscle tank from their collection and a sequin slitÂ skirt from Planet Blue. It was one of those major outfits that once you see it you canâ€™t not own so for the sake of our sanity and well-being we immediately bought both pieces. The David Bowie tank lasted a total of 3 hours following its arrival before we wore out for a run along the Miami Beach boardwalk, but we were saving the sequin skirt for a special occasion.

On our last night in Vail we had reservations to one of the top restaurants in Vail Village called La Tour. (If youâ€™re ever in the area, make a reservation and order the lamb. You wonâ€™t regret it.) The whole affair screams special occasion, no? Well, we thought so. Alas, the skirt came out of its neat plastic bag and became the foundation to one of our more eclectic outfits, paired with the omnipresent David Bowie tank, our Forever 21 faux fur and our Aska Collection Trooper booties.

In wacky Miami, no one would have given us a second look but in conservative, Norwegian sweater-jeans-and-boots-wearing Vail we stood out like BjÃ¶rk at a priest convention. Regardless of whether the people we passed were throwing shade at the shiny sequins, its weather inappropriate thigh-high slit, or the entire look in all its non-conformist glory, the experience made us realize that the Miami aesthetic is not acceptable most places and appreciate that Miami is so open-minded. #ThankYouMiami for letting our freak flags fly or notâ€¦as long as weâ€™re happy.

Radiotopia Launches #PodQuest, the Search For Podcastingâ€™s Next Breakout Hit

With $10,000 and four months of mentorship, three finalists will vie for a spot in Radiotopiaâ€™s network of acclaimed story-driven podcasts.

Podcast show submissions can be sent via radiotopia.fm/podquest until the April 17, 2016 deadline.

Aiming to discover diverse new voices, introduce audiences to fresh talent, and explore what it takes to bring a podcast to life, the Radiotopia podcast network today launched Podquest, a competition that will give three finalists financial and professional support to develop a podcast for the story-driven network of acclaimed shows such as 99% Invisible, The Memory Palace, Criminal, Song Exploder, and The Mortified Podcast.

Podquest kicks off with a one-month open submission period, during which anyone can submit an original idea for a podcast. Ten semi-finalists will then be interviewed by the Podquest selection team, with three finalists receiving $10,000 (each) to produce pilot episodes for their proposed shows. Over the course of four months, these finalists will receive hands-on support for creating a sustainable podcast, as well as editorial and technical input from Radiotopiaâ€™s team of seasoned podcasting experts. At the end of the production phase, one winner will be selected to develop their idea into a full series for inclusion in Radiotopia in 2017. Throughout the Podquest process, 99 Radiotopia supporters will participate by weighing in on submissions and offering feedback on pilot episodes-in-progress.

To help in the development of their podcasting endeavors, all ten of the semi-finalists will also receive an array of professional support including $300, office hours with Radiotopia producers, free Hindenburg radio editing software, a free two-year PRX membership, and a year-long membership with the media talent network AIR.

“Radiotopia’s mission is to provide a powerful, supportive platform for podcasting’s boldest voices,â€ said Julie Shapiro, Executive Producer of Radiotopia. â€œPodquest will connect us with ambitious, emerging producers and bring their creative talents to audiences hungry for Radiotopia-style podcasts: shows that consistently showcase innovative, provocative and carefully crafted storytelling.â€

Launched in 2014 by PRX, the award-winning public media company, Radiotopia has quickly become the leader in today’s audio storytelling renaissance and grown its roster of hit shows from seven to thirteen. In 2015, Radiotopia podcasts were downloaded more than 10 million times per month, nearly doubling their 5.7 million monthly downloads from 2014.

Listening to a song now is likely to involve digital innovation, similarly to when one rents an apartment, uses a car, or books a taxi. The music that used to be bought and owned is increasingly an ephemeral choice, ordered for limited periods when and as wanted.

Delivery, consumption, and creation changes have been constants of the music industry for decades. The evolutions have been from live to analog formats, to digital platforms such compact discs and copies, to full downloads, and most recently internet streaming. Each shift has altered the relation-ship and income split between delivery intermediaries and the artists.

Ubiquitous internet access coupled with smart phone and tablet sophistication now offer access that previously required premium services or a PC. What will be the next iteration of content delivery and distribution? Will it involve music only or incorporate other mediums? Which new delivery platforms will be developed? What role might big data play in target marketing and sales? Will it be easier for new or independent artists to obtain a market for their creations? Will new intellectual property ten-sions arise?

Terra Group and The Related Group, the development team bringing the Park Grove community to the Coconut Grove neighborhood come 2018, gave back to its future community by sponsoring the kids at Coconut Grove Cares to an evening of fun and sportsâ€”over 100 of them.

The pre-construction development, which also happens to be the future home of a key figure from the Miami Heat, rented two buses and purchased over 100 tickets to bring the kids of Coconut Cares to watch the cityâ€™s most beloved team.

David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group and Cathy Strafaci, Director of Sales at Park Grove, gave the kids their tickets to the game at the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares, who, in turn, presented them with a big thank you card for taking them to the game.

The buses then shuttled the kids off to American Airlines Arena for the Heat game and returned them back to the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares following for their parents to then bring them home.

This is the first in a series of efforts for the future residency, Park Grove, to give back to its community.

Oltremareâ€™s Executive Chef Dario Olivera invites guests to start the meal with a palate-cleansing conch escabeche alongside expertly prepared tostones served with a special â€œisland sauce.â€
For the second course, diners can choose from sea salt roasted beets served with Greek yogurt, honey cured pistachios and a blood orange syrup or smooth and creamy burrata served atop fresh frisee, pancetta and a basil tomato emulsion.
Main course selections include a rack of lamb with polenta and mint pesto, grilled grouper topped with a delicious pinot noir reduction with capers and cured tomatoes, or cedar key clam tagliatelle in a simple butter and pinot grigio sauce featuring garlic and cherry tomatoes.
To conclude the meal, a crisp turnover filled with fig and dates topped with chocolate, caramel and smoked sea salt is the perfect combination of sweet and savory.

Seniors 65 years and older with a knack for singing are invited to audition for Tri-Railâ€™s â€œSenior Stars.â€ As part of this annual event, 12 finalists will be chosen to sing their way to the top at the final competition for the chance to win a $500 cash prize and a free pass to ride Tri-Rail for one year.

Tri-Railâ€™s â€œSenior Starsâ€ is open to solo singers who are residents of Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. A panel of judges will select the 12 contestants who will go on to compete in the final competition at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, May 22, hosted by TV/radio personality Jade Alexander.

Special guest speaker, author and ABCD Institute Co-Founder, John McKnight.

As a result of a national study of local neighborhood initiatives, John McKnight and his long-time colleague, Jody Kretzmann, created the Asset-Based Community Development strategy for community building. Together, they co-authored the basic guide to asset based community development, Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Identifying and Mobilizing a Communityâ€™s Assets. This book has become one of the nationâ€™s best-selling guides to community development, and the methods it outlines are now utilized world-wide.
McKnight has also written three additional books â€“ The Careless Society: Community and its Counterfeits and, together with co-author Peter Block, The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods. His latest publication, An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture, was co-authored by Peter Block, Walter Brueggemann and John McKnight.

The Big Serve is a philanthropic event presented by Jonathan Nussbaum, President of LaceClips, in an effort to provide 400 inner-city youth with access to the sport of tennis and engage the residents of Miami Beach with children in Greater Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, children from the four non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and partake in four stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and notable local celebrities, a tennis clinic with lessons from pro tennis players, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Fast Twitch and a concession station with drinks provided by Menin Hospitality and Icelandic Glacial and food provided by Shake Shack and Davidâ€™s CafÃ©. DJ Irie will provide beats alongside the Miami Heatâ€™s MC, Uptown Dale, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember.

The United States Tennis Association will organize and provide resources and follow-up locations where kids can play tennis after the event. Children will also receive a tote bag provided by Head with various items including tennis balls provided by Biscayne Tennis, a Head Tennis racquet, and a t-shirt provided by Jonathan Nussbaum and Becker & Poliakoff. All proceeds from the event will benefit Overtown Youth Center, Irie Foundation, Wadeâ€™s World Foundation and the Miami Beach Tennis Foundation. Delorians here! This weekend is dedicated to adventurers across the millennia. Bring your brassies Victorian “gears” and join us for “Steampunk Saturday.” On Sunday, the village opens itself up to time traveling pioneers, aliens, Browncoats, Federations and Empires.

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the Florida Renaissance Festival include Comcast, Pepsi, Warsteiner, Guinness and Miami Grill.

The Florida Renaissance Festival at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park will be open weekends beginning February 13th from 10 a.m. to sunset until March 27th. Open President’s Day, February 15th. Prices range from $21.00 for adults and $9 for children ages 6 to 11 years of age. Children 5 and younger are free. Special seasonal passes are available for $75 and group ticket rates are also offered. Discount tickets also available at Walgreens.

While costumes are not necessary for admittance, thousands of people each year enhance their experience by donning garb from the Renaissance era, or participate in one of the festival’s special themed weekends by dressing up as their favorite pirate, time traveler, fairy, or fantasy character!

More than two million people have seen the Florida Renaissance Festival in Deerfield Beach during its royal period in South Florida. This 16th Century production features more than 100 costumed performers, 12 stages with continuous entertainment and 20 stage acts from around the world.

Jazz at MOCA presents soul legend Timmy Thomas and the Overtown Soul Review, with special guest vocalist Cina Jones, in a FREE performance March 26 from 8 to 9:15 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 770 NE 125th St., North Miami.

Lightning Has Struck Twice. Soul Legend Timmy Thomas, who serenaded the world in 1973 with his million-selling smash “Why Can’t We Live Together,” has conquered the world again. Thanks to Drake’s beyond-obvious sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his monster worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Timmy Thomas’ groove. 2016 will find Timmy Thomas releasing a string of singles on Overtown Records and one on Saustex Media, prior to his comeback album. His collaborators range from the late Steve Jobs to Timmy’s old hitmaking crew at TK records. They were recorded in the manner Soul Music deserves: Living and Breathing on analog tape – so it may be released on vinyl. Timmy Thomas famously sang “People Are Changingâ€ on his first LP. The people may have changed, but their love of his soulful groove remains the same.

About the Bird Road Art Walk:

The Florida International University Department of Architectureâ€™s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This yearâ€™s runway is expected to showcase more than 50 outfits, all of which will be reusable. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for students in the FIU Department of Architecture.

The Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is hosted by Event Founder, Artistic Director, and FIU Architecture alumna Amira Ajlouni â€™14 and Event Partner, Artistic Director, and current Architecture graduate student Jennifer Luis. Kick off your weekend in our heated pool with a HYDRORIDER AquaCycle class with NYC-based fitness guru, Zack Schares; plus a yoga session beachside with local Miami reiki master and power yoga instructor, Natalie Hernandez. Participants will get the choice to do Yoga or AquaCycle first, which is on a first come, first serve basis.
Helpful Tips & Reminders:
-Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your class; participants will check-in with the hostess by the pool.
-There are no lockers or locker rooms available, but we will have a bungalow reserved for you to hold any personal belongings.
-Event will be bi-weekly; with two one hour sessions from 8-9 am and 9:15-10:15.

The New Tropic will lead a group brainstorming and design workshop after to help flesh out some ideas.

On Feb. 24, Knight Foundationâ€™s second News Challenge on Libraries will open for applications. We will be offering applicants a chance to share winnings of $3 million for projects that answer the question: How might libraries serve 21st century information needs?

For centuries, libraries have been the keepers of public knowledge, spaces for human connection and educators for the next generations of learners. For this challenge, we hope to unearth new ways to advance libraries and their collaborators to meet the needs of their communities and carry these ideals into the future. T

The challenge will be open for applications from Feb. 24 to March 21. Anyone working in the U.S. on U.S. â€“ based projects can apply, including public and private libraries, businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Projects have the chance to receive funding anywhere between $100,000 â€“ $500,000 for a grant period of one to two years.

We all have big dreams and seemingly insignificantÂ peroÂ important dreams. One ofÂ the latter for us was to one day find a dress like the pink velour one Hallie wore in “My Date with the President’s Daughter”â€”the one dramatically revealed at minute 7 of this YouTube clip from the movie. After years of passively searching, we finally found it (albeit a more hipster tunic version but perfect nonetheless)! The long-awaited dress was waiting for us inside of the Hyden Yoo Boutique on Abbot Kinney where we came across it last SaturdayÂ while shopping with our friendÂ Sarah.Â Finding this dressÂ was one small part of a five day-long marathon ofÂ amazingÂ juju that carried us through our recent Los Angeles trip (of which you will hear more aboutÂ on ThankYouMiami.comÂ next week) because it turns out it is impossible to find Hyden Yoo’s women collection anywhere on the internets.

Because this outfit was a miracle a long time in the making, we naturally bumped all other OOTDs planned for Sunday BrunchÂ to make room for this fabulous dress. So, on Sunday, armed withÂ our new dress, our favorite sunnies, and our favorite ASKA Collection booties (you may remember them from our last #ThankYouMiami for FashionÂ post because we love them so much we wear them everyday) we headed to The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach with our sister Lucy and her friends. The tunic cutÂ was perfect for brunchingâ€”ergo, extremely applicable to Miami lifeâ€”because it allowed our bellies to expand forÂ unlimited mimosas, a massive plate of chilaquiles, zucchini fries, and donut holesÂ and still looked flattering. And, afterward when we went on a post-brunch buzz drive downÂ the California coast blasting Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” with the windows down,Â it turned out to be the prettiest, most comfortable outfitÂ for that too. #winning.

The Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services Inc. is hosting its annual fundraiser on April 23rd from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm with Galactic Nights … Launching Into The Future, a gala to celebrate the organizationâ€™s bright future. Every first Sunday of the month, Bike the Underline Cycling Club will lead guided, free, family-friendly group rides for bicyclists of all levels to explore the future Underline and its surrounding neighborhoods and attractions by bike.

For our first ride, weâ€™ll meet at the UM Metrorail Station and ride north 6.5 miles to Mary Brickell Village. Weâ€™ll break for complimentary refreshments at Perricone’s Marketplace & Cafe. Cyclists may bike or take transit back from Brickell Metrorail Station. The total distance, round-trip by bike, is 13 miles.

Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.
