Hope for Depression Research Foundation Kicks-off Awareness Raising Campaign in Palm Beach

Royal Park Bridge Lights Up Yellow for the Race of Hope
Shining Light on The Importance of Mental Health in 2020

February 4 – 15, 2020

(Palm Beach, FL – January 22, 2020) – Palm Beach’s iconic Royal Park Bridge will light up in sunshine yellow on Tuesday, February 4 to kick off the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) Annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression and declare a town-wide campaign to raise awareness about mental health.

The bridge lights, underwritten by Addison Hines Charitable Trust, will stay lit in HDRF’s signature yellow for the entire month of February.

HDRF’s Race of Hope, the centerpiece of the campaign, is a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 15 at 8 am at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. HDRF Founding Chair Audrey Gruss and Board member Scott Snyder, both Palm Beach residents, are Grand Marshals for the annual event which is now in its second year. With hundreds registered from Palm Beach and beyond, the Race unites the community in an active day of health to speak out about depression and raise funds for critical research.

“Depression is the Number One cause of suicide and disability worldwide,” said Audrey Gruss, “and our vow in the next decade is to find new treatments that will finally bring this complex illness under control.”

Gruss added: “The support we receive in Palm Beach for the work we do affirms our commitment to defeating this debilitating illness that affects each and every one of us, either directly or indirectly.”

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

· HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
· Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
· The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
· In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.
· HDRF has invested over 30 million dollars in advanced depression research to date.

Thursday October 11 at 8 PM: Rachelle Coba releases her CD, “Blink”, at the Funky Biscuit in Boca.

“She plays the hell out of the guitar” – Matt “Guitar” Murphy

Rachelle earned a bachelors degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Miami. With all of these influences, Rachelle developed her own unique finger-style approach to blues rhythm and lead guitar playing. After college, Rachelle became known in Miami for her unique style and was cast in an indie movie, taught guitar for National Guitar Workshop, and worked on developing guitar methodology.

Her style eventually brought her to the attention of other blues artists. She worked with and toured as a guitarist with artists like Super Chikan, Albert Castiglia, Grady Champion and Ray Drew. After honing her skills as a side-woman, Rachelle stepped out on her own to front her own band. Since then, Rachelle has played around the world and she continues to grace the stage as one of the blues’ most original performers.

Rachelle’s band features AJ Kelly (bass), Raul Valdes (drums), Allen Paul (piano), and special guests. The Funky Biscuit is at 303 SE Mizner Blvd #59, Boca Raton, FL. Reserved seat tickets are $10-$20; General admission $15 the day of the show. Visit funkybiscuit.com or call 561-212-7115.

In industries from agriculture to environmental science, biotechnology plays an important role in improving industry standards, services, and developing new products. Biotechnology involves the spectrum of life science-based research companies working on transformative technologies for a wide range of industries.
The global biotechnology market is expected to reach USD 727.1 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The emergence of certain key themes in the biotechnology market is expected to drive growth in this industry to a lucrative extent.
The biotechnology sector in Spain continues growing year after year. To a large extent, this is due to its transversal character, because more and more companies from different sectors incorporate biotechnology activities to their products and services
There has been a growing increase of the turnover of biotechnology companies in the Spanish GDP. And that evolution has been constant, even in the years of the crisis. As evidence we have the values of 2014, year when that economic figure stood at 10.35%, and 2008, when biotechnology just supposed 2.98% of GDP. The value of 10.35% has even equalled digits of tourism in the country, one of the pillars of the Spanish economy.
This type of biotechnology comprises approximately 50% of all biotech companies in Spain. These companies are mainly engaged in products for human health, not only with regard to drugs, but also products and services related to molecular diagnostics, both to treat and to prevent disease.
Currently, Spain ranks as the second country with the highest number of biotechnology-related companies in the world, only behind the United States. Back by popular demand, Canada’s multiple award winning string slingers SULTANS OF STRING bring their genre hopping musical passport to Delray audiences.

For the past 10 years, 3x JUNO Award nominees and triple Canadian Folk Music Award winners Sultans of String have thrilled audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Gypsy-jazz, Spanish Flamenco, Celtic, Arabic folk, and Cuban rhythms, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity.

They’ve been celebrating this milestone decade of music-making with a digital and vinyl release, aptly titled ’10’ (featuring re-mastered cuts from their 6-CD catalogue).

Folk Radio UK recently described their music as “an enthralling, adventurous celebration of the power music has to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, and Sultans of String wield that power with grace, eloquence and spirit.” Indeed ’10’, is more than a global sonic tapestry. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time. While the album treks across all kinds of musical terrain, the fertile soil beneath each track is fed by hope unhindered and freedom found.

At the core of the band’s sound is Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool’s fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm. Together their musical synergy create Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation for the show is in-the-pocket bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk).

Chardavoine is a concrete manifestation of Haitian jazz, a new genre emerging in jazz today. Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, the talented guitarist has covered the gambit of musical styles through the waves of his guitar. He is an incredible musician, a creative artist and a refined professional. He represents the best of modern music and the future of jazz, along with his Creole Jazz Ensemble.

Chardavoine is well-known around New York for his association with the late great Dave Valentin, who’s a guest on two of his albums. Last year he had the privilege of playing at Aretha Franklin’s birthday bash with the Tito Puente Jr. orchestra.

His latest release,“The Tribute”, which commemorates the Haitian earthquake victims, showcases his talents – not only as an excellent musician but also as a great creative and seasoned arranger. His previous CD, “Fifth Season”, has been described as funky jazz, played with soul. It’s guitar oriented in the style of George Benson, and lyrical in the style of Stevie Wonder.”

The ensemble features Hilario Bell on drums, Tom McCormick on sax, Rafael Valencia on bass, and Felix Gomez on piano and keys.

BRING YOUR OWN … WHATEVER! The theater boasts cabaret-style table seating, where patrons can bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

Ife-Ile Afro-Cuban Dance Festival, Origami Everglades, Reading Queer Literary Festival, PageSlayers Summer Camp, N8tive Reel Cinema Festival are all winners of a 2016 Knight Arts Challenge, a grant awarded to any one with an idea that brings South Florida together through the arts.

A project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Knight Arts Challenge is accepting ideas through April 28. “The Knight Arts Challenge is an opportunity for everyone to pursue his or her artistic dreams,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “We want hear your big ideas that can help inspire, reflect, and engage your community.”

There are only three rules for submissions:
1) The idea must be about the arts.

Many previous Knight Arts Challenge winners have been small, grassroots efforts that reflect South Florida and its many cultures. Combining Josh’s rock talents and inspirational writings inspired by his late mentor, Debbie Friedman, and Neshama’s strong allegiance to her late father and icon, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, this is a concert that absolutely cannot be missed.”

A classically trained musician who is equally versed in rock, jazz and world music, Josh Nelson combines his broad range of influences into a breathtaking musical style that is accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether appearing solo or with an elite ensemble of world-class musicians, Josh’s presence and performance style is high-energy and captivating. His music builds community, lifting up congregations and concert audiences alike through experiences that are at once energizing and deeply moving. By understanding and taking healthy measures to eradicate Cultural Stress, each person can dramatically increase his or her odds of unlocking their personal potential to look younger, feel younger and live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.”

Marlins Think Tank Week 5/1/14-5/6/14

Posted on    by

Marlins Think Tank Week
May 1-2 and May 5-6
Elementary and Middle Schools across Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties

The Marlins Think Tank is an online curriculum-enhancement program that utilizes the Miami Marlins as the basis for learning. Marlins Think Tank aims to enrich the learning experiences of children in grades 4-6 by linking baseball to the curriculum areas of writing, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health & fitness. The program provides lesson plans which meet Common Core State Standards as adopted by the Florida Department of Education, with the Miami Marlins as the lesson theme.

All 4th-6th grade classrooms in South Florida are eligible to receive a visit from Miami Marlins players, coaches and broadcasters during Marlins Think Tank Week. To participate in the contest, classrooms complete a lesson plan and submit it to the Miami Marlins. This year, 16 classrooms were selected at random as winners of the contest. During Think Tank Week, the entire 25-man roster canvases elementary and middle schools across South Florida.

Marlins Ayudan (Spanish for “help”) is the signature outreach initiative of the Miami Marlins. The purpose of Marlins Ayudan is to provide a sustainable corps of volunteers willing and ready to effectuate positive change in the South Florida community. It is the fabric of the Club’s corporate culture and engages every front office employee with schools and charities throughout South Florida. The goal of Marlins Ayudan is to leave a lasting legacy through impactful service activities that tackle the community’s most pressing needs. The three-tier Ayudan methodology consists of organizational service days, team events and individual volunteer opportunities. Since its inception in 2010, Marlins Ayudan has contributed over 22,000 hours of service and established partnerships and traditions of giving that inspire employees to pursue their passions and contribute their time and talents year-round.

Several local businesses have partnered to establish the South Florida chapter of The Dear Santa Society, a Philadelphia-based charity that over the past 25 years has provided toys, clothing and food to thousands of children during the holiday season.

A non-profit organization founded in 1989, The Dear Santa Society strives to bring together a community of caring people who want to help others in their communities. Since its inception, the charity has provided toys, clothing and food to over 4,800 children in approximately 1,500 families. All members of The Dear Santa Society are volunteers, including its board members and officers. No volunteers, officers or board members receive any compensation and 100% of contributions made to The Dear Santa Society are used to fund the holiday drive.

The 501(c)3 organization solicits contributions from individuals, small businesses and large corporations and conducts fund-raising events during the course of the year. The South Florida chapter’s fundraising efforts this year are lead by its founding members, who include The Max Group, The Buzz Agency of Florida, The Sonoma House, Farmer Jay Organics and Blindfold Magazine. Contributions can be made in person to any of the founding member companies or on the Dear Santa Society website (www.dearsantasociety.org). Cash, checks and credit cards are all accepted.

South Florida Chairperson Fred Stampone of The Max Group points out, ”Most of us are lucky to have many happy holiday memories, but there are many children right here in our own backyard who are deprived of such memories. The hardships that many families face throughout the year become particularly acute during the holiday season.”

Volunteers interested in joining this year’s effort should contact The Sonoma House at 561-756-9474. The program schedule calls for wrapping toys and clothing on December 18th at 7:00 PM and delivery to families on December 21st at 8:00 AM, with such activities being conducted at The Sonoma House, 200 NE 11th Street, Boca Raton, FL 33432.
