Black Gold – Struggle for the Niger Delta to Compete in the Narratives Film Competition at the 15th Annual American Black Film Festival July 6-9, 2011 in Miami, FL
Thursday, July 7th at 3pm (with a talk-back) and Friday, July 8th at 10:30 am
Colony Theatre on Miami Beach
1040 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, Fl
Tickets can be purchased at the box office or by calling (305) 674-1040 starting July 6, 2011.
Struggle for the Niger Delta will compete for the Grand Jury Prize at the 15th Annual American Black Film Festival, July 6-9, 2011 in Miami, Florida. The movie is nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Screen Play in the Narratives Film Competition. Director, Jeta Amata brings to the screen, a powerful story of greed, murder and corruption in the volatile oil rich Niger Delta region.
The scope and significance of the story has attracted a noteworthy cast, including several from Hollywood: Billy Zane (Titanic), Mbong Amata (The Amazing Grace), Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill), Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Hotel Rwanda), Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), Eric Roberts (Dark Knight) and Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs). Based on true events, Black Gold is already following in the footsteps of Hotel Rwanda for its social and environmental statement on corruption and the violation of human rights in the Niger Delta, as current headlines on the international news carriers: CNN, BBC and Al Jezeera reveal.
“It is a region where good and evil have been blurred by shady government officials, greedy oil companies and violent rebels fighting over the control of the scarce oil resources that run the world. Now the people are seeking peaceful resolutions to their grievancesâ€, states director Amata.
Black Gold is Jeta Amata’s long awaited follow up to his award winning feature, The Amazing Grace. Black Gold was shot in his native Nigeria and the US to tell the story of an unlikely hero, a Nigerian woman who courageously stands up to unite the warring factions and rallies the world to take notice, putting her life on the line.
Producers and production companies for the movie includes: Jeta Amata and Hosa Okumbo (Wells and Jeta Entertainment; The Amazing Grace), Wilson Ebiye (Rock City Entertainment; Barack Obama: The Power of Change), Dede Mabiaku and Ori Ayonmike (Starkid Inc.).
“We believe that Black Gold will shed light on the degradation of the environment caused by oil exploration in the Niger Delta and hope that the multi-national oil corporations and the government will clean up their act.â€, states producer, Wilson Ebiye.
According to Hosa Okunbo, Executive producer, “Black Gold is a powerful and timely story which will compel the stakeholders to build infrastructures that will improve the living conditions of the indigenous people.”

Local “Green†Organizations Join Commissioner Libbin in Post-Holiday Beach Clean-up and Rally Support for the Smoke-Free Beach Zones Petition
As the sun rises on South Beach the day after the 4th of July, history shows that the area will be particularly litter-laden with cigarette butts, plastic and glass bottles and other debris.
In an effort to educate, empower and inspire the community, while emphasizing his commitment to the Miami Beach environment, Commissioner Jerry Libbin is putting together a volunteer beach-clean-up and encourages Miami Beach residents to participate, and if so inclined, show their support for his Smoke-Free Beach concept by signing Libbin’s petition. The Smoke Free Beach Zones petition is aimed at restricting smoking to designated areas outfitted with ash cans for better clean up and decreased pollution.
The Commissioner’s office will provide garbage bags and other materials needed to collect litter, and volunteers will receive a complimentary continental breakfast and beverages. It is recommended that volunteers bring their own reusable bottles of water as well as sunscreen. Finally, all participants are eligible for the “Who Picks Up the Most Litter†contest, competing for gift certificates, including Jet Ski rentals provided by the Boucher Brothers.
Jerry Libbin has spearheaded several major environmental initiatives as a Miami Beach City Commissioner. The Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB) recently honored him with the prestigious Emerald City Award. In addition, he lead a crusade to keep beaches clean with the “NO LITTER, NO BUTTS†campaign and created the Adopt-a-Beach program with 17 adoptees to date.

The exhibition extends throughout the first floor main entrance and exhibition area and will be on view Saturday, July 2, 2011 through Sunday, October 16, 2011. On June 28, 2011, 42 years after the Stonewall riots, Pioneer Winter and Jared Sharon will present “42: A Stonewall Prospective,†a live multi-disciplinary dance performance that combines film and large-scale props to recall the events leading to the uprising and violent protests which ignited the modern-day gay civil rights movement. The intimate event will include three live dance sections that will range from dark to humorous, along with the premiere of an original film to further expand the performance.
As an artist growing up in a post-Stonewall society, Pioneer Winter says he owes his freedom to his cohorts — the social advocates that paved the way for greater acceptance for an important segment of the population. “It’s not always strife,†Winter says. “It is a passion to progress.†– Neil de la Flor, Knight Arts

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of RedBull Red Bulletin Magazine Launch at the New World Center Atrium on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
Last night in Miami Beach at the stunning building design by Frank Gehry, The New World Center, 450 guests gathered to celebrate the launch of The Red Bulletin, a global magazine that brings to life the creative and adventurous world of Red Bull through spectacular photography and feature stories. Music, live art, iPad demos and dynamic life size magazine pages sparked conversation and entertained guests. DJ Africa kicked off the event and later transitioned the music to DJ Irie, while throughout the night LEBO impressed guests with a live painting of a colorful canvas in his signature style inspired by pages of the magazine.
Several Red Bull athletes flocked to Miami to celebrate the launch of The Red Bulletin including Reggie Bush, Daniel Dhers (X Games BMX gold medalist), female world champion wakeboarder Dallas Friday and world record holder wakeboader JD Webb. Also in attendance were pro football players Zack Crockett (Oakland Raiders) and Michael Greco (Green Bay Packers) who were able to kick back and enjoy the party in their home state while they wait out the NFL lockout.
“It’s great to be associated with a brand that has its finger on the pulse of so many things,” said Reggie Bush. “The Red Bulletin showcases everything from sports to nightlife.â€
The Red Bulletin is available at 20,000 retail locations nationwide and is inserted the 3rd Sunday of every month into the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Miami Herald and New York Daily News. Readers can also download the free iPad app in the iTunes Apples Store or via www.redbulletin.com

Blank City is a well researched and captivating portrait of New York’s underground DIY cinema movement from 1977–1987, and features interviews with lots of great people including Steve Buscemi, Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Amos Poe, Debbie Harry, Thurston Moore, Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch & many more.
We really want reach out locally to get the word out to the Soul of Miami arts & music community when the film screens in the area. I came across your blog online and I was hoping you might be interested in helping us get info out about the film.
Blank City
A film by Céline Danhier
Blank City tells the long-overdue tale of the motley crew of renegade filmmakers that emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous period of New York history that crossed over with the East Village Art Scene and thriving music scene. It’s a fascinating look at the way this misfit cinema used the deserted, bombed-out Lower East Side landscapes to craft daring works that would go on to profoundly influence Independent Film today. Unlike the much-celebrated punk music scene, this era’s thrilling and confrontational underground film movement has never before been chronicled.
Directed by French newcomer Celine Danhier, Blank City captures the idiosyncratic, explosive energy of the “No Wave Cinema†and “Cinema of Transgression†movements. Featured players include acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Hip Hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, artist James Nares, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

Found Objects, Found Identity: Made In Colombia Installation By
Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi For Colombian Independence Day
On view July 8, 2011 to August 8, 2011
In celebration of Colombian Independence Day, Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi unveils Made in Colombia, a thought-provoking installation that explores the immigrant experience of self-discovery through displacement. Giving new purpose to found objects, the mixed media artist has culled discarded dolls, shoes, clothing and other things that will be suspended in ArtCenter/South Florida’s 2nd Floor Vitrine Windows, creating a layered effect of floating, tactile memories.
“When I moved to the United States in my early adulthood, I felt rushed to assimilate and lose my accent,†said Moreno-Yaghoubi. When questioned about her nationality: “A lady asked me where I was from and when I said Colombia, her face turned sour, ‘you mean the cocaine country’?â€
Finding her own voice beyond the melting pot that is the United States or the blanket labels attributed to Colombia, Cecilia began using found objects in her artwork as a visual metaphor, one that reclaims identity and restores integrity. In juxtaposing one vintage item with another, some of pieces have been touched-up and been made to look new again, further sharing possibilities of transformation.
Through a combination of influences, Cecilia Moreno Yaghoubi’s concepts have traveled from the lush and beautiful landscapes of her homeland to riskier, mixed media work. Cecilia premiered her painting at “Origenes Latinos/ Latin roots†gallery in Chelsea, NY in 2005 and has since exhibited throughout New York and Connecticut, including the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, the National Academy of Art Museum and at the Colombian Consulate of New York. She has been featured at Opera Gallery, Miami, and opened a solo exhibit named “Girl from Cali†at the Colombian Consulate in Coral Gables. Cecilia was selected to participate in the Biennale in Florence, Italy; in ArtCenter/South Florida’s windows program and at the prestigious International Kids Fund’s annual Latin American Auction. For more information please visit www.ceciliamyart.com.
Established in 1984, ArtCenter/ South Florida (located at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) is a non-profist 501(C)(3) organization that provides subsidized studio and exhibition space as well as teaching opportunities for emerging and career artists in their facilities at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Donation /Dedication of Steinway Concert Grand Piano – Short Concert – Reception
Tuesday June 28, 2011 / 6-7:30PM
SoBe Institute of the Arts
2100 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach
Press and Invited Guests
Please RSVP to Carson Kievman, Executive Artistic Director events@sobearts.org.
As its fifth season offering quality arts education and innovative performances drew to a close, SoBe Institute of the Arts (SoBe Arts) received amazing and wonderful news: the donation of $75,000 from the LeRoy Schecter Foundation, to purchase a Steinway concert grand piano in honor of Ms. Ottavia McLaughlin. “Thanks to this very generous gift, SoBe Arts will continue to provide exceptional professional piano concerts to the general public, as well as motivate talented young piano students,” states Dr. Carson Kievman, SoBe Arts Founder and Executive Artistic Director.
One of these young musicians is Angel Perez. A SoBe Arts scholarship student for only three years, who last October, at the age of twelve, opened the concert season for the Brampton (Canada) Symphony with a Mozart piano concerto. Two weeks ago, on the eve of his thirteenth birthday, Angel was able to perform his first solo recital on this magnificent instrument to an enthusiastic theater-full of parents, friends and community members.
In recognition of this donation, the SoBe Arts Board of Directors, professional teaching artists and students will be presenting a check from the LeRoy Schecter Foundation to representatives of Steinway & Sons and dedicating the piano to Ms. McLaughlin. The press and special guests are invited. The evening will also include a short concert by faculty pianists Robert Chumbley and Adam Chefitz, followed by a champagne reception.

For the exhibition, MOCA’s galleries will transform into spaces that are quasi-recognizable as particular public and private settings, anchored by key seating elements.
_Any Ever_ is on view at MOCA, North Miami from June 24 through September 4, with another iteration simultaneously on view at MoMA PS1 in New York from June 19 through September 3, 2011.**
The presentation of _Any Ever_ at MOCA is organized by MOCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

Miami Beach
at the end of 5th Street in the sand, at intersection of Ocean Drive
On June 25th at 12 noon in many time zones worldwide, people will join hands on beaches and in cities for an annual “Hands Across The Sand†event. They will say NO to expanded offshore drilling and YES to clean energy solutions.
“Hands Across The Sand†began in 2009, to demonstrate the depth of public support for protecting coastal economies, oceans and marine life from the threats of offshore drilling. As Woody Allen said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.â€
“Hands Across The Sand†participants will join hands to urge decision makers to end the United States’ dependence on fossil fuels and begin investing in cleaner energy choices now.
Residents of Miami will “draw a line in the sand,†by joining hands in symbolic demonstration against offshore drilling. Last year’s “Hands Across the Sand†Miami event attracted thousands of people, making it one of the largest anti-drilling and pro-clean energy demonstrations in the world.

Born in 1948 and now in his third decade as a professional performing artist, E continues to nurture his passion for the Blues. Growing up in New York, he discovered his purpose at the age of 13, when he was drawn to the sounds of Acoustic Blues, and got his first harmonica when he discovered Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, he developed his singer/songwriting talents, as well as an aptitude for playing other instruments beautifully… His specialty was the blues harp. He established himself as a ground-breaking harmonica player, and became a percussionist with Hodges, James and Smith (back in the early 70s) as well as a studio musician with Bolic Sound Studios, playing behind Ike and Tina Turner. He also played percussions on Sussex Records with Bobbi Hall behind Bill Withers in 1971 through 1974. In the 80s, he moved to Chicago where he played with the likes of John Prine, Jo Mapes, and Joseph Jarman.
While family and other commitments would interrupt his career, E always returned to his roots in blues, and 2000 saw the release of his second album, “The First Time Out”, an extraordinary recording that was an eclectic mix of ten original compositions comprising Blues, R&B, Jazz, Delta and Gospel. In 2002, E hit his stride, adding his exceptional harmonica skills and powerful vocals to the mix. He delivers charismatic, compelling, and passionate performances that are charged with emotion and filled with his authentic signature style. Always experimenting with new sounds, he sometimes makes bold, daring renditions of obscure tunes of legendary icons such as Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, adding his unique spin to them.
2006 was a creative year for E, what with three albums released and building his own record label, Black Owl Music. While his albums showcase the sensual range of his vocals and the use of his voice as an incredibly multi-faceted instrument, it is his haunting harp signature style that captivates and inspires his audience. “Mississippi Reminiscence” is the most personal of his work, and “Five Long Years: A Tribute To Carey Bell” has been hailed as sheer unadulterated blues.

Twelve Days of Painting
Miami, FL – Flagler Arts Space will open its ‘Twelve Days of Painting’ exhibit from 6 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at 172 W. Flagler St., across from the Miami Art Museum.
This show will feature paintings created by Geddes Levenson and Annie Blazejack during a twelve-hours-per-day, twelve-day performance. By the project’s end, each artist painted 364 paintings. The works sprawl across the gallery walls, askew and overlapping. Painted on paper, sized from 9†x 12†to 4’ x 6’, they explore abundant themes, imagery, and methods of paint application. The show will remain open by appointment through June 30th.
The two artists regularly invent painting projects, sometimes creating situations that generate abundant and energetic works, sometimes collaborating on simultaneous performances to connect them across their two cities, Miami and Brooklyn. They have been painting together since childhood.
The Flagler Arts Space gallery and studios were opened by a cooperative of eight local artists working to build welcoming and interactive exhibits in downtown Miami. Space has been donated by The Thomas Center, a real estate company committed to enlivening downtown Miami.

The charity weekend will bring over 100 former collegiate talented alumni players from Florida State Seminoles and University of Miami Hurricanes back once again to settle the score on the field. Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 7-10PM!
924 Lincoln Road, Suite 205
Miami Beach, FL 33139
ArtCenter/ South Florida is proud to present Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove – organized by resident artist, Natasha Duwin.
Many times a gentle demeanor conceals a resolute personality, and a softness in speech and manner betrays a certain severity. This exhibition explores the tensions between these two attitudes, particularly in women.
One of the featured works will be Shedding the Shadows, a dress and tapestry woven out of discarded items of clothing. Seemingly useless objects are repurposed into a series of ropes, with their connotation of strength and usefulness, and they in turn are compiled into a dress that is at once revealing and protective.
Featured Artists: Adriana Carvalho, Natasha Duwin, David Leroi, Venessa Monokian,
Hugo Moro, Damian Sarno, Nina Surel & Agustina Woodgate
On View June 3 – July 10, 2011
The evening will also feature our monthly Art Walk, from 7-10pm!
Join us for an art-filled evening of gallery exhibitions and the opportunity to visit the studios of our 36 artists-in-residence, featuring some of South Florida’s most talented artists. Artists will open their doors to share photography, painting, installation, video, and mixed media works in our buildings located at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road.

Phoenix Rivera is coming in from New York for Kimberly Chmura’s birthday bash at the Van Dyke Thursday. He’s the son of Mario Rivera.
Phoenix Rivera, the son of international legend Mario Rivera, was born in
New York City in 1965. Guided by his father’s musical insight, Mr. Rivera taught himself the technical aspects of the drums. He has played with musicians such as Hilton Ruiz, Dave Valentin, Bobby Bell, Eurythmics, Robert Palmer, Chico O’Farrill and Tito Puente. His most recent recording credits include albums such as At the Point, Vol.1 and Vol. 2 with Papo Vazquez, El Commandante recorded with his father, and Por Fin with Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. In March 2002, Mr. Rivera participated in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz in the Schools Tour with Arturo O’Farrill, which reached over 5,000 New York City students, teachers, and parents.
“Phoenix Rivera is one of a handful of drummers in the world who can play true jazz and true Latin with authority and swing. He has what we call in the business “spangalang†and “timba.’’ You might recognize it as that ineffable quality when you taste smokin’ barbecue. It’s intangible and goes beyond the individual ingredients, but you know it’s there ‘cause you gotta have more. It’s called fatback, manteca, moxie and a million other things. Phoenix has it in spades.†(Zoho records)

The great news of the comeback of GenArt’s relaunch couldn’t make people happier. Even though there will be a limited programming in Miami as the company focuses to relaunch in New York and Los Angeles, Miami will take anything that Gen Art proposes in events. It is expected that Gen Art will have more of events as the year progresses with definitely something during the ever popular international event, Art Basel.
In conjunction with Gen Art’s relaunch, it was Perrier Jouet’s 200th anniversary. What better way to celebrate it at Soho House in Miami Beach. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy cocktails made by Perriet Jouet and toasting the celebration of the bicentennial and for creating a living legacy.

CROTCH (all the Joseph Beuys references in the world cannot heal the pain, confusion, regret, cruelty, betrayal or trauma…)
Keith Hennessy’s Bessie-awarding winning piece was presented to critical acclaim at New York’s Dance Theatre Workshop in 2009. CROTCH references the images and actions of legendary conceptual artist Joseph Beuys. On the surface, the work is about art—its histories and heroes. On a deeper level, a sadness grows within a queer divorce melancholy. Hennessy was a pioneer in the queer performance scene in San Francisco during the 1980s and 1990s. He has been featured in several books and documentaries, including David Gere’s “How To Make Dances in an Epidemic,†Richard Mohr’s “Gay Ideas,†and Dancers in Exile.

This is a serious issue and one we are going to tackle for this seminar. Mr. Wells is going to break it down and give you some simple examples of how you can protect yourself. Mr. Wells understands these issues very well, being both a lawyer and an artist. Please bring any other legal questions you may have and we will try to cover as many as possible.
